President’s Report

Christmas will soon be upon us and I would like to thank our Committee for their hard work during the year. This has helped to make our Club what it is today! Club members have enjoyed well over twenty organised or invitational events during 2013. We have also attended Displays, Rally’s, Historic Winton, AOA and (more recently) the Centenary of Canberra Rally. I would like to remind everyone that our AGM will be held at our December meeting and I look forward to seeing you there. I wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Events Report

Happy Sevening … Warren Gracie Three A7’s and three moderns attended Eric Steinhaus’ recent North Run. It was a long 197klm scenic run one way with a stop for morning tea at Pie in the Sky followed by an enjoyable lunch at Wisemans Ferry Bowling Club. Unfortunately one A7 didn’t finish the run but eventually made it across the ferry with assistance from Paul Pui. A good day was had by all and a big thank you to Eric for organising the day. The weather was excellent as we relaxed and enjoyed our Centennial Park Display Day. Warren Gracie was the winner of the Peoples Choice for the Best A7. I’m still trying to decide the winner of the Memory Test as there were many strange items listed as being present that I had no knowledge about! The Centenary of Canberra Rally (100 years of Canberra) was a great Run;

especially for those A7s that travelled the section from Nowra to Tarago where they covered many miles with ups and downs, over creeks and log bridges and finally arrived safely to meet other A7’s at Tarago. The Gala Dinner was first class and the surroundings were fantastic as you have probably seen from the great photos taken by Faye Yarroll. A good time was had by all. I’m looking forward to seeing many A7’s at the Farming Small Areas Expo 2013 at Hawkesbury Showground. Please don’t forget to collect your Entry Pass from Maureen at the Information Centre at Richmond/Clarendon. I am finishing this report by wishing all members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2014. Happy A7 touring …Maureen Boatwright

SYDNEY’S HARBOUR BRIDGE This Screen Australia film is about the construction of our world famous bridge at a time when our baby Austin’s were either near new or yet to be built. You can watch this 1930’s film via our website’s Events Gallery during November 2013.

29 September 2013. Centennial Park is a grand park in the European tradition. Covering 189 hectares, it features formal gardens, ponds, grand avenues, statues, heritage buildings and sporting fields. It’s used by walkers, joggers, roller-bladers and cyclists and it offers horse riding facilities. It’s diverse flora includes Norfolk Island pines, Port Jackson figs and Holm oaks. And today, it included a cute display of exotic and native Austin 7’s. The six little Austin’s drew quite a crowd. Both the young and old were attracted to our A7’s like a magnet … the younger ones never having seen such unusual little cars … and some oldies recalling fond memories from several decades ago when life was less hectic. At the Park today were Merv & Maureen Boatwright, Warren Gracie, Russell Linfoot, Amy & Paul Pui with Amy’s mum and young friends Justin and Janine, Bob Riches, Ken Rolley, Mark Wellington and Robert & Faye Yarroll. During the morning a passing motorist Page 6

spotted our A7’s and promptly stopped to have a closer look. Much to Faye’s surprise the man said, “I see you’ve added new white wall tyres recently!” How did he know that? Well ... Laurie and Jan from Willoughby were holidaying at Tanunda in the Barossa last year during our A7 Rally and checked-out little Herbie at our motel. They recognised our car today and came over to say hello. After a relaxing morning we enjoyed a picnic lunch. This was followed by some delicious cup cakes, home-made by Janine and Justin with help from Amy. After lunch we had some fun testing our memories by having a quick glance at several items; then immediately recalling as many of them as possible. Then a frisbee appeared and both young and old enjoyed some light physical activity. Finally it was time for formalities ... and Warren Gracie was awarded the 2013 Club Car of the Year for his 1935 A7 Roadster. Congratulations Warren. Another fun-filled day was enjoyed by all.

22 September 2013. Burwood Council has been celebrating the onset of spring with a festival for the past quarter of a century. The Festival has blossomed over the years to become the biggest and most vibrant festival in the Inner West, attracting residents and visitors from across Sydney to the array of food and merchandise stalls, staged and roaming entertainers, amusement rides for big kids and little kids, the classic car show and shine, model boats, and so much more! Club members Anthony & Kevin Harte and Robert & Faye Yarroll joined hundreds of other vintage and classic car owners in Burwood Park to compete in todays show and shine. All these lovely cars, the glorious weather and X Factor winner and pop superstar Samantha Jade all helped to keep thousands of children and grown-ups happy and entertained. Faye, our Club’s unofficial photographer, takes a lot of pictures for our website. But today she was outsnapped by the crowds with their many cameras, phones and various i-pads. If only she had a dollar for every photo taken today of some wonderful cars on display then she would have made a fortune. A highlight of the day for Robert and Faye was receiving the Show & Shine 2013 Best in Show trophy for a 1930’s Classic Vehicle. This certainly topped off another great day. Well done little “Herbie”. Page 7

Centenary of Canberra Rally most significant cultural assets.

19-20 October 2013. All Australians have a link with their nation’s capital, but we’re sometimes guilty of taking it for granted. This year we celebrate 100 years since Lady Denman, wife of then Governor-General Lord Denman, stood upon the newly laid Foundation Stones and announced that the name of the new Australian capital would be Canberra. Since it’s inception, Canberra has been the site of some of the best thinking in the country. It continues to be an incubator of great ideas and scientific achievements and the custodian, on behalf of all Australians, of the nation’s Page 8

The Centenary of Canberra celebrates the history and heritage of one of the most enduring planned cities in the world and at the same time highlights its lively present and bright future. Our Club joined the Vauxhall Owners Club for this weekend’s Rally. Our seven Austin 7’s and a Liege joined three beautiful Vauxhalls. It was certainly a great privilege for our Club to have six cars at Jervis Bay for the Ceremonial Start of the Centenary of Canberra Rally. Robert & Faye Yarroll and Paul & Amy Pui joined the Rally at Tarago and eagerly awaited the cars from Jervis Bay to arrive at their morning tea stop.

Faye was overheard saying, “Here comes the first cars!” And guess which ones were the very first to arrive at Tarago. An Austin 7 and a Liege! Well done Merv & Bob. Upon arrival at Tarago, Maureen Boatwright produced a lovely cake for our Members to enjoy at morning tea. Jenny Bloser (a country Member from Vincentia) had baked the cake together with some lovely savoury triangles and then delivered them to Jervis Bay. What a lovely surprise. Thank you Jenny for taking the time to spoil us during our big Celebration weekend with your home cooking. The cake and savouries were very much appreciated; and were consumed quite rapidly. After leaving Tarago it was time to take the scenic

visit our Events Gallery at www.austin7clubnsw.org.au

Jervis Bay - Tarago - Canberra route to Bungendore where the town came out to join in the festivities. After lunch at Bungendore some members continued onto Canberra’s Exhibition Park (EPIC) while others chose our motel for some relaxation before dinner. The children took the opportunity for a quick dip in the pool and had lots of fun. We enjoyed a relaxing Saturday night’s dinner at our motel and celebrated a number of October birthdays. It was a great end to a day full of touring. After a good nights sleep, we set off again on Sunday morning to EPIC for the Sunday Cruise down Canberra’s main boulevard (Northbourne Avenue) towards the lush lawns of Canberra’s Old Parliament House … and what a delightful location!

Canberra definitely turned on some great weather this weekend and the Rally participants thoroughly enjoyed the local hospitality. Cars came from all over Australia to help celebrate this very special occasion. Today was hot and sunny and the cars looked stunning lined-up in rows for the many thousands of visitors to inspect and respect. Another highlight today was the Fashions on the Lawn parade where Robert and Faye Yarroll took out the overall winners for being Best Dressed in the era of their car. Congratulations. There was lots of entertainment today with pipe bands, bush dancers, face painting for the kids, stalls and lots more … and

many old cars to enjoy. After a long day, two members set off on their homeward journey while the others stayed to attend the Gala Dinner at the National Museum of Australia. A memorable evening was enjoyed by all. A special thanks to The National Trust and everyone on the organising committee for a great 2013 Centenary of Canberra Rally. Well done! Page 9

15 September 2013. Club member Eric Steinhaus organised todays run; and it was very eventful with lots of extra scenic stops along the way. Driving their Austins 7’s were Eric Steinhaus with friend Cissy, Warren Gracie with passenger Maureen Boatwright, and Faye & Robert Yarroll. Russell Linfoot joined us at the North Strathfield departure place in his modern. We soon set off for Pie in the Sky at Cowan for a short break and light snack. Bob & Judith Riches were waiting for us at Cowan in their Smart car. Soon after we were joined by Paul & Amy Pui with Amy’s mum, and friends Mr & Mrs Ling with daughter Jean. Pie in the Sky at Cowan prides itself on good old fashioned Aussie values and customer service and says this little slice of heaven has operated for about 20 years, and although they’ve added some fancy pies and espresso coffee to their Page 10

menu, they can still get the basics right! Well, unfortunately for us, today was an exception to the rule and extremely slow service delayed our departure. Eventually it was time to set off; heading along the Old Pacific Highway to Spencer via Peats Ridge and Central Mangrove. As we approached Peats Ridge we came across some drivers from a Luxury Supercar Driving Experience Day; stopped on the side of the road swapping cars. Talk about luxury at its best. The Old Pacific Highway was not only hosting our super cool Austin 7’s but also a Lamborghini, Audi, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati and an Aston Martin all at the same time. It wasn’t long before they showed us some real horsepower by overtaking our little Austin 7’s. Little did we know that today would have many unscheduled scenic stops! Warren Gracie’s A7 Bentley decided it was time to have a break from motoring

car procession all the way to the Club. by stopping without warning for no apparent reason. Maureen asked Warren, “why did you stop the car?” and Warren replied, “I didn’t … it stopped by itself! And this is how the day progressed. It was a case of drive a little … then stop a little. Then drive a bit more … then stop again. And every time we stopped; up popped Bentley’s bonnet and all male members immediately stuck their heads inside for another look. And there wasn’t much room in that little engine bay for all those extra heads. But thanks to the excellent Support Crew in attendance Warren was able to borrow some tools and a few spare parts that allowed him to hobble to within a couple of kilometres of the actual Wiseman’s ferry where Bentley finally gave up the ghost. So out came the final straw … a tow-rope. Thanks to Paul Pui’s 4WD and Faye & Roberts tow-rope, we eventually managed to get little Bentley to the Wisemans Ferry Bowling Club for a very late 2:30pm lunch. Talk about a Presidential cavalcade … Warren had a six

A special mention must go to the kitchen staff at the Club for patiently awaiting our arrival. By this time there were fifteen very hungry people needing some good food and light refreshments. Lunch was a very welcome sight; and the meals tasted great and were served with a friendly smile. Wisemans Ferry is located 75 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD and is a tourist spot with picnic and barbecue facilities. There’s a rich convict and colonial heritage in the area and it’s near the Dharug and Yengo National Parks. Today did have a few hiccups; the Yarroll’s automatic garage door broke early that morning, then the service at Pie in the Sky was very slow, a few cars took wrong turns (but that’s normal), Warren’s car kept stopping and Amy’s dear Mum had a small fall when entering the Club. Surely this was more than enough unexpected action for one day! Thankyou Eric for arranging todays event and maybe next time things will run a little smoother for you. Page 11

“The Geisha Boy was a big hit for funny-man Jerry Lewis way back in 1958. One of the highlights of this popular film was an exciting car chase featuring a very tall Asian man driving a very small car (please see a clip from the film below showing you the car and driver). The location information says that the film was made in USA and makes no reference to locations in Japan. This would suggest that the car may not be a 1932 Datsun Type 10 disguised as an Austin 7; but may be a 1930 American Austin 7 disguised as an Austin 7. It could also be an Austin 7 disguised as a Datsun or as a fictitious mock up of an Austin 7. If a man that big was really driving the car then there would be no room for his legs and any mechanical parts, so it may be a movie mock up anyway. Question: What type of car is it?

Paul Boatwright with fellow winners

14-15 September 2013. The inaugural Wings & Wheels was held this weekend at Maryborough Aerodrome. Many different aircraft were brought together for a fly-in and the Old Aviators Museum was open all weekend. The Maryborough & District Historic Vehicle Club held a Classic Car Show with 130 beautifully restored cars including 13 Austin 7’s. There was something to see and do for every one of the thousands of visitors who flocked to the Central Goldfields Shire (Victoria) … and the weekend proved to be a

real hit. Club member Paul Boatwright took his newly acquired red and black 1929 A7 Tourer to the display and impressed the judges enough to bring home one of the four trophies presented on the day. Congratulations to Paul & Sandra Boatwright on their beautifully presented car. The serious fun began on Sunday with the Austin 7 Club Inc (Vic) conducting a fabulous ¼ Mile Sprint day. Seventy-six drivers revved up their engines and sprinted along the air-strip for a quarter mile to see who could do it

the quickest. The overall record on the day was 13.5 seconds for a 70’s Grantini Sports Racing car. Then there was the Austin 7 Class where nine A7 drivers took to the strip to push their cars to the limit. Congratulations again to Paul Boatwright who won the trophy for the Fastest Austin 7 on the day with a time of 18.2 seconds; then came Stuart Krug on 19.0 seconds and third was Merv Boatwright on 19.3 seconds. A big “well done” to all NSW Austin Seven drivers.
