President’s Report

6

As a relatively new member of the Austin 7 family I have been fascinated by the discussion on power. It is something that, at first, I saw as lacking in our little cars. I learned as a young man studying physics that power is directly related to torque. My conversations with veteran Members on the subject, even those who have raced, merely raises a wry smile. Our recent club weekend away to Goulburn began as a slow convoy down the M5 and Hume Highway. The opportunity to take in the scenery was fantastic as was the change in angry honking of “B” doubles diminishing to friendly “toots” as the other vehicles peeled away to reveal our classic cars as the hold up. Traffic jams in Goulburn were no longer a problem when other motorists spied us. Little old ladies and young children alike smiled and waved as we passed, one motorist even gave up his parking spot to allow us to park as a group. The Mobil service station attendant in Goulburn offered the free use of a petrol can when the President ran out of fuel. Heritage listed tourist attractions allowed us to park wherever we wanted. Then there was the top down, wind in your face, open country road trip to Tarago pub to sip on an ice cold beer on the verandah whilst bikies admired our fleet parked in the street. A 50mph tail wind added to the joy of the trip home, which at times pushed us past the end of the speedo dial, and allowed me to pass a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost near the M5 and M7 junction. The last bastion may be the angry toll collector on the Eastern Distributor who does not understand why an Austin 7 doesn’t have an “e tag”. Perhaps a strategically placed crank handle may obscure a number plate photograph enough to empower our little babies even more? Happy Motoring, Mark Wellington

Happy Birthday to all the Members who celebrate birthdays in May.

Event Director’s Report The Club weekend away in Goulburn saw 21 adults and 5 children enjoying a visit to Riversdale Historic Trust home and enjoying morning tea in the grounds of this old home. Tea and coffee accompanied by cucumber sandwiches and tiny cup cakes were served to us in, and on, bone china. This brings back great memories from the Border Run to Wentworth/Mildura when we were served afternoon tea on bone china in the grounds of an old stately home. We visited many places of interest round Goulburn during the weekend and as usual it all came to an end far too soon. It was great to see 10 Austin 7’s travelling on country roads together. Some of us left Sydney on Friday morning and drove the “Babies” everywhere over the weekend. Our Austin 7 ticked up approximately 483 miles round trip. This made me think how good it was to see Faye and Robert Yarroll arrive at the motel in their Austin 7 “Little Herbert” very late on Friday afternoon. They have only been in Little Herbert for two Sydney runs since purchasing him and then they tackled the run to Goulburn and back on their own with no back-up. Those interested in displaying their Austin 7’s at Shannons Eastern Creek and The All British Day (Kings School, North Parramatta) are asked to please contact the Events Director so your name can be placed on the list. This will see the early birds being assured of Entry Forms for the events. The booking Form for All British Day is being returned on Friday 14th May so please hurry and book now with the Events Director. Please don’t forget to let the Events Director know, if you are going to the Christmas in July outings as bookings must be made NOW! Also don’t forget to put your name and numbers down for the soup stop on the June Run. Please join us on the runs and give your “Baby” and yourself a good experience and a lot of fun. I notice a number of Austin 7’s have not ventured out on our Club Run days yet this year. See you at the Mystery Run on National Motoring Heritage Day. Happy Austin 7 touring, Maureen Boatwright

New Website And E-Baby Torque

10

Those who regularly attend general meetings would be aware that I have been working on a new website for the Austin 7 Club NSW Inc. The site was due to go live towards the end of February but was delayed to to some technical problems. I’m happy to announce that the new www.austin7clubnsw.org.au has been completed and is now live. The new site gives the Club alot more flexibility for future expansion, new features and powerful reporting tools, such as Google Analytics. In the modern world websites are often the first point of contact for people interested in specific subjects and club sites are a great way to showoff our cars and what we do. They are also a great tool for attracting new Members and providing other interested parties with a ready means by which to contact us. As such, I welcome all suggestions or improvements that Members may have in order to help the website accurately reflect our Club. So please, go online have a look and let me know what you all think. Also, our new hosting agreement includes an email facility that has allowed us to maintian the info@austin7clubnsw.org.au email address. Any pictures, reports or info you wish to send for the magazine and website or any correspondance you wish to send to the committee should be forwarded to this address. Finally, one of the other projects I recently completed was the evolution of E-Baby Torque. The first version was simply a pdf file that Members could open and view using Adobe Acrobat Reader. It was always my intention to have E-Baby Torque presented in a more “magazine-like” format for viewing on screen. Through the use of a very clever, free online publishing site I have been able to generate E-Baby Torque in the format that I had always envisioned. The new E-Baby Torque is identical to the printed version in all ways except that it is viewed via an online publisher instead of being posted. Current E-Baby Torque subscribers would be familiar with the new format and the monthly email that supplies a link to the latest version (go to www.issuu.com/austin7clubnsw to view our online library). A printable pdf version is still supplied. With the recent update of the Club’s Member database it has been noted that alot of you have active email accounts. With that in mind, in the coming months all Members that have supplied an email address will begin to receive E-Baby Torque instead of the traditional printed version. Please, have a look and decide if you are happy receiving your magazine in this format. Doing so will help the Club save money on monthly postage and printing costs. E-Baby Torque distribution will begin in June. If you are unhappy with E-Baby Torque and would prefer the printed version be posted you must email me to opt out. Darryl Stockley Editor
