President’s Report

6

August 2010 was a great month for the Club. We had record numbers at both Eastern Creek and Kings School. We saw the rebirth of Ron Selig’s tourer, the debut of Amy and Paul Pui’s car and Barbara and Kevin Fahey back on the road with their Ruby. We have also received some excellent photographs from our remote Members for inclusion in the 2011 calendar. Last month I was able to report progress with our draft constitution. By now all Members should have received a draft constitution for comment in the mail. We will allow a month for feedback before setting a date for a vote on ratifying the proposed document. Places for the Presidents Weekend on 16th – 17th October are filling fast. Once again we can offer great Austin 7 touring and something of interest for everyone. Please contact either myself or Maureen Boatwright to secure your place. Winter was cold but short this year. Now that spring is here, why not fold back the hood and take a drive in your Austin 7? Happy Motoring, Mark Wellington

Please note: Any Member using a vehicle that is on Conditional Registration (HCRS) and is attending a Secondary Club Run, or any event listed under Invitations Accepted or Other Events of Interest, MUST contact a Committee Member to advise your vehicle movements prior to attending the event. The committee of the nominated primary club on your conditional registration must be aware, and approve of, all movements of your vehicle. If you wish to attend invitational events outside Club runs, you must contact a committee Member to log the trip, otherwise your registration and insurance is not valid. At all times your Austin 7 should carry a copy of the Club’s Certificate of Insurance (Public Liability) and the most recent copy of “Baby Torque”.

Event Director’s Report Shannons Eastern Creek Display Day saw our Club proudly showing twelve Austin 7’s. It was great to see Merilyn and Jim Dunn displaying their new blue Austin 7 Special for the first time. The All British Day was fantastic. On speaking to a few of our Members since Sunday, they all said what a great day it was. So many extra food stalls and market stalls. All the children in the Club had a ball on the rides and in the playground. On display were 19 Austins and one Mini. Two of the Austin 7’s took part in a Special Anniversary Display on the top oval featuring the evolution of cars over time. I have made the accommodation booking for The Austin 7 National Rally - SA in 2012. Seventeen rooms were tentatively booked and only two are left. Those who have made their booking through me, could you please forward a $50.00 deposit for each room to secure your booking. Your cheque should be made out to the Austin 7 Club NSW Inc and posted to the Club P.O. Box. If you require more details, please do not hesitate to contact me. There will be entry Forms for the Rally and also the planned itinerary for all days of the Rally and Expressions of Interest available at the September General Meeting for those who don’t have computer access. I wish a great weekend to our Club Members attending the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of NSW Inc. special event at Wakefield Park, 17th – 19th September and our editor will be expecting great photos for the next magazine. See you at Centennial Park with your dressed up doll/teddy bear or your Austin 7. Happy Austin 7 touring, Maureen Boatwright

Happy Birthday to all the Members who celebrate birthdays in September.

Members and their cars at All British Day

One Fateful Day One fateful day July 2008 Our lives changed when Boatwright and Wellington crossed our path Before we realized, a little Austin 7 appeared from afar Dear old Mr. Southwell trotting round his farm In a little Austin 7 black and cream, he went round and round What a lovely sight, what a dream We couldn’t contain our smiles Off it went to be re-spruced, rebuilt and patiently we waited Twilight runs, breakfast runs, Tea gardens, festivals, weekends away Oh what lovely sights, how we admire all other Austins More meetings, more runs, train rides, museums, wineries, presentations We even dressed up one sunny day at Centennial……. Two years passed, no hurry we said, do whatever you could Lots of stuff needs to be learnt, every opportunity Paul would The smiles’ getting bigger, anticipations, expectations, Probably best just be patient! Then the day came, still not sure what to expect With trailer in tow, British Day in mind, oh is this it? Little Austin just came round the corner! Jubilations, shock and joy Lots of sweat, anxieties and sleepless nights We couldn’t say thank-you enough Proudly we presented it to All British Day On 2010 August 29th, Though it didn’t arrive on its wheels Drive it, don’t hug it we were told Sure, just easier said than done, said Paul Non Austin folks, relatives and friends All gathered from near and far Smiles all round and proud feelings shared Small, feeble and vulnerable it seems Little they know the tough little 7. Now the baby sits neatly where it should George Green should be proud we brought home one And big thank-you to all concerned. Background: Back in 2008, Paul & Amy knew little about cars, least of all vintage cars, met Merv Boatwright and Mark Wellington in a A7 car auction by accident They ended up buying John Southwell’s A7 from a farm. While the car was being restored, Paul and Amy discovered a new interesting and wonderful world in A7 club especially people and activities, and learnt and admired all types of A7.Much thanks to the frantic hard work of restorers; the car was ready one day before All British Day. Being both cars and mechanically illiterate, the challenges began on learning to use a trailer, to drive and reverse the A7 on and off the trailer, to use the ratchet belts to secure the car, to drive the A7 all within 24 hours for the British Day display. All their folks and friends knew little about Austin 7 came to see the restored car which is proudly parked in Paul and Amy garage, a house previously owned by the late George Green, a famous Sydney vintage cars owner and collector.

Letters I would like to express my gratitude to all who have participated in the restoration of the 1929 “Chummy”, particularly Merv and Paul Boatwright for their mechanical help and advice and Sandra for putting up with me calling so often. There were many others involved in the project, principally my son Garth and his team of friends at his workshop, Simon Agar, Bill Hall, Warren Gray, Jorge Fernandez, Peter, David Berthon and others I may have missed. At one stage there were five of them polishing it to get it ready for All British Day. Thanks to Warren’s timely inspection we were able to put it on Club plates and get it to the event. My apologies for not socialising but I caught up with friends I have not seen for the past twenty years. Regards, Ron Selig
