LEKWA RAINS CLAIM TWO Heavy rains stormed over Lekwa Municipality on Tuesday filling up even the less worried about rivers. Magenzone was separated by Blesbok river from Standerton as cars and trucks could not cross the river as raging waters filled its banks covering the bridge. Two people were killed when their bakkie collided with a police vehicle in these heavy rains. The accident happened on the R38 Standerton to Bethal road near an overflowing bridge. The Blesbok river bridge on R39 road between Morgenzon and Standerton and another between Bethal and Middelburg on R35 road were damaged by heavy rainfall this same Tuesday. Khanyisa arrived at the Blesbok river bridge at about 09.00 pm on Tuesday night when the water had subsided though still raging. Standing on the Standerton side of the bank, there was no communication with motorists that were on the other side of the river as water covered a distance of about 300 meters. There was no telling if the bridge was still intact. After two hours of waiting, one truck decided to take a chance as shown in picture. Traveling on first gear, the truck made it safely to the Standerton side of the bank. Even then motorists were still not sure if the water would rise up. At abou 11;45 pm, the trucks from the Morgenzon side formed a convoy followed by the small cars and all made it safely. It was the time that Motorists traveling towards Ermelo also followed suit and formed a convoy and crossed over. The reason why motorists ended up at the bridge was because there were no clear signs from both sides that indicated that the road was closed and they had traveled too far to make a U turn especially the cars from Standerton. Traffic officers only started to rush to the river at 12 midnight when they got the message that cars had started crossing the flooded river. During the day motorists traveling between Standerton and Morgenzon had been advised to use the R544 road. The MEC for community safety, security and liaison in Mpumalanga, Mr Vusi Shongwe had urged motorists not to cross submerged bridges to avoid being swept away.

EYE FOR AN EYE Makes The World A Dark Place

The MEC for Art, Culture, Sports & Recreation Ms. Sibongile Manana had to put on her walking shoes to join in a walk to commemorate the 1913 Mahatma Gandhi's protest against the then law preventing people from crossing one place to the other without Government permission.

T

he walk was held on the 30 November 2013 in the Pixley Ka Seme Municipality. Covering a distance of 6 km, the match was a cross province march starting at Charlestown township in KwaZulu Natal and ending at Volkrust Old Prison in Mpumalanga Province. This was also in protest against the regard of Muslim marriages as unlawful and the three pound tax on Indian convention labourers. The march started at the house where Mahatma Gandhi stayed when he lead the peaceful march in Charlestown on the way from Natal province crossing the Transvaal boarder against injustice laws. Khanyisa had the opportunity to talk to Ela Gandhi the granddaughter of the Late Gandhi. Gandhi's family explained that the gathering was a historic and very important occasion to them as it portrays the achievement of the Salt March demonstrations in 1913. “I Am

glad to have his blood running through my vain”, said Ela Gandhi. Mahatma and the protesters he was leading agreed not to vandalise any properly during the peaceful march. He inspired advocates of nonviolence such as Martin Luther King Jr who fought for economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protests. He went back to India where he led movements like Dandi March to fight for freedom against British-ruled India. The crowd wore different t-shirts portraying Mahatma Gandhi as the gathered and sung revolutionary songs while waiting for other member to arrive from other towns. Emergency services and traffic police where available to control the traffic as the march was held at N11 which is a major road connecting Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal. A torch was lit and three pound tax prayer read before the march started. The east bound lane of the freeway was completely closed for protesters to be able to walk. The march was led by Ms. Sibongile Manana, the MEC for Art, Culture, Sports & Recreation In Mpumalanga, Ela Gandhi and the MEC for Art, Culture, Sports & Recreation in KZN. Some participants treated the march as being more than just a commemoration march, but a health

Empty busses were following the crowd as a contingency for those who would not make it to the end of the 6 kilometres. As the protesters passed though the Volkrust town, more people joined the march and became more vibrant as the liberation songs got louder and louder.

MEC Manana and Ela Gandhi led the march together with other dignitories

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports & Recreation in Mpumalanga, The High Commissioner from India, MEC for Art, Culture, Sports & Recreation from KZN, Gandhi Development Trust and the Secretary of Culture from India officially opened an exhibition of Gandhi's historic expedition in a prison cell. Posted on this exhibition cell are his quotes like “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind”, At the prison sporting grounds was a big tent where the march ended and the leadership addressed the participants and entertained by various music and dance groups was provided.

AN EYE OPENER TRIP FOR LAKE CHRISSIE'S TOURISM PUPILS It is said to be true that small things lead to big things. Tourism pupils of Lake Chrissie Secondary participated in the Mpumalanga Tourism schools competition where they had to do a play depicting water as a scarce resource and won themselves a weekend away trip to Nelspruit.

T

he competition has opened various doors of opportunities hence learners are now exposed to different tourism sectors which serves as a guidance in pursuing their careers. For some it was an eye opener to the talent that they have and will assist them in the entertainment industry. This was a life time opportunity to also explore our beautiful Mpumalanga province,it is a pioneering spirit indeed".Adds Ms Khabo Tlou. These pupils had funfilled weekend as they got to visit the best attractions(Gods window, three rondavels, berlin waterfalls and bourkes potholes). They felt honoured to be

congratulated on their hard work by Maggie Benedict, spotted at Skukuza Golfklub, who plays the role of "Akhona" in Generations and shook Madonsela Sakhile hands with her. "It was a dream come true ,i still cant believe that our hard work has finally paid off. Just taking time out and visiting the mother nature, seeing and capturing all the scenic beauty that Mpumalanga has to offer. It made me speechless but I am glad that I did not only observe with my eyes only but also with my soul too".

We have received amazing testimonies!

Says Ndlovu Nomthandazo - cast member of the play. Ms Khabo Tlou also tried to put the school on the map by getting offers from different Departments together with auditions. The pupils cannot wait for next years SADC competition and the believe its theirs and the have seen the broadness and cruciality of the tourism industry.......

ANGRY MABUZA WARNS RESIDENTS NOT TO DO SEX AS A FORM OF PLEASURE WHEN BORED children then become easy target and end up being infected with HIV,” said Mabuza. He explained the damning statistics of high HIV prevalence in the GertSibande District had been drawn from pregnant women who were mainly young. He urged the traditional leaders to endorse the government's efforts of medical male circumcision in order to contribute towards the reduction of infections.

An angry Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza strongly lashed out at Mkhondo[Piet Retief] citizens for being careless when engaging in sexual activitiessaying unsafe sex created more problems for the society. Premier Mabuza was speaking during the ZaziCampaig in Driefontein outside Piet Retief on Saturday. The on-going campaign was part of the build-up activities by the provincial government to the World Aids Day commemoration.

Studies show that chances of acquiring an HIV infection are reduced by 60 percent when a male is circumcised. The provincial government is targeting to have at least 500 000 males circumcised in the current financial year whereas the national department of health is targeting more than 4 million males n 2015. “We can talk about these until our hair turn grey.

T

he campaign is aimed at discouraging young girls from engaging in premature and unsafe sexual activities with older men [sugar daddies]. It further seeks to empower young girls to know their strength and refuse to depend on men for money and other favours in return for sex. Mabuza said young girls should not use unprotected sex as a form of pleasure as it led to pregnancy and diseases such as HIV and Aids. GertSibande District has high prevalence of HIV and AIDS at 46 percent throughout the country with Mkhondo local municipality at 56 percent.

Angry Premier Mabuza makes an example about a girl child that if not protected by men, they will never realize their future

He urged the citizens to stand up and fight against the pandemic which was destroying the nation. He said lack of family values contributed to such problems as some parents were not strict enough but allowed their children to disobey and misbehave. Some parents would come home drunk and not be responsible for the well-being of their children, said Mabuza.

They just cannot be borne by a mistake and worse be infected with HIV because their parents did not know their statuses. What kind of a nation are we that kill its own children,” asked Mabuza.

are deliberately destroying our nation. What kind of a nation whose men sleep with young girls of 14 years old? We are saying no to people who destroy the future of our children. “I do not like the men who take advantage of our children. They are not the real men. It is unacceptable that some men would woo young girls with money and small things like airtime for cell-phones.

While delivering his address on the stage, people shouted back and interrupted at the Premier saying they had nothing to do as they were unemployed but to make babies. “As a government we acknowledge that there are people who are unemployed yet, but they cannot use sex as a form of pleasure because they are bored.

He said desperate young girls were regrettably involved in intimate relationships with “infected elderly men” who used them as sex objects and who did not care about their future. He lashed out at their fathers and mothers for not playing their parental role in instilling morals on their children adding that babies could not be raised only on government's social grants.

The numbers of pregnant learners at our schools are shockingly alarming. The nation is dying and we are all doing nothing but shift the responsibility to government. Who will stay in the RDP houses the government is building because everyone is dying?

This thing creates problems in our society. Young girls get pregnant and once they have

The time is nearer, those who have ears should listen, all I am asking for is that please change your behaviour. We have built three beautiful schools in your area, go and utilise the opportunity by concentrating on your studies become better people for your families. This country needs you,” said Mabuza. Mabuza further urged those who were already on anti-retroviral treatment not to default on medication when they felt better. He stressed that everyone needed to know their statuses by testing in order to be treated early if there was a need.Earlier in the day, Zazi girls led by Miss Mpumalanga [Ntando Kunene] marched and submitted a memorandum to the Premier asking him as the provincial chairperson of the Mpumalanga Aids Council to ensure their protection from older men who used them as sex objects. They asked him to ensure that their Zazi campaign was sustained and supported as it created a platform for young girls to openly talk about sex and learn from the discussions. They said they were “tired” of being pregnant at a young stage and not enjoy their youth stage, and that they had had enough of being sexually used by older men.

9TH SERIES OF “IT'S FOR LIFE” FOR SABC 2 See also Page 07 LCAT Productions in association with Urban Brew Studios are currently commissioned with the 9th series of It’s for life for SABC 2. It’s for Life is an educational reality series that aims to develop 3 chosen candidates’ “life skills” so that they can realise their social, personal and professional potential in the diverse, challenging context of South Africa. This television series has consistently been breaking new ground by advancing the career possibilities of a number of young people, whilst still providing the viewers with lots of entertainment. The show’s goal is to educate our viewers about different careers, cultures, people and exciting places in our country. Every 13 episodes have a different theme. 2013 is the centenary of the land and trust act of 1913. This particular act was significant in entrenching the full extent and draconic nature of apartheid. All spatial arrangements as we know them in our country today are in form and nature, a logical consequence of the execution of this law. In the rural areas, where the African population had their farms and villages with agricultural capacity, this law ensured their removal to so-called trust lands, which were mainly barren waste lands. The ultimate objective of the land and trust act, was to strip the African of all land rights, and render him ‘a pariah in his country of birth’, as Sol Plaatje says in his book ‘Native Life in South Africa’. Our three participants are Melissa Dlamini, who recently graduated in BA Journalism from university of Johannesburg, Marble Mokhele from Sebokeng, who studied Political Science and Mapula Lebone from

Mookopane in Limpopo who studied tourism. Since 1994, the current government has been making attempts at land restitution with varying levels of success. Through the eyes of our three participants we will find out about various land issues and educate our viewers about this important issues. The production company will not work in isolation and involves a variety of role players like the Department of Rural development and Land Restitution, knowledgeable professors and lecturers in the field, journalists, newspapers, Chief, curators, historians and artists. Khanyisa Newspaper interacted with the production team and went to Johannesburg to its sister company offices, Jozi Advertiser, to shoot one of the episodes of the show (Episode 6 or 7) which will appear in January 2014. Khanyisa Publisher Austin Moyo Snr. and the Managing Editor Nonceba Xezu formed the panel of Judges for this particular episode. The story that was written by the team of three is on page 7 of this edition and is also posted online on both the Khanyisa Newspaper website and Jozi Advertiser online. RELOCATION OF INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS land in Kopanong where people from Mooiplaas were moved to, is privately owned. This was established when the resettled people were evicted from the land. Study by a student team from 'Its For Life' an SABC 2 reality show, reveals that most of the residents that now stay in Lehae are satisfied as they had previous aspirations to be relocated.

There has been a move by the Gauteng Government to move residents from their initial settlements to targeted areas that have been prepared but there still seems to be some sort of misunderstanding between Government and the affected people.

T

he affected informal settlements are Dlamini Camps, Eikenhof, Mooiplaas, Protea South and Mshenguville. The referral areas that people have been moved to are Lehae, Mooiplaas and Kopanong. There are however, reports that the

In Mooiplaas the team spoke to the Ward councillor, Frans Mailula, who explained the relocations and the plan of government.

Fire accidents are a common feature in informal settlements

On the contrary, in Protea South, residents refused to move, because they felt that the process of relocation was not clearly discussed with them as a community. In Kopanong the residents were forcefully removed because Kopanong is alleged to be privately owned property. The Chairperson of Landless People's movement, Lizzy elaborated on these problems faced by the communities and expressed deep dissatisfaction. On the other hand, in Lehae the residents are happy to have lease of ownership as they are now using the land for farming purposes. They are farming not only for their own subsistence but also for commercial purposes. In Protea South one of the elderly people there who spoke on anonymity said, I am happy that we have moved because in the previous settlement there was too much crime as there were no street lights. Here in Zone 7 we now have street lights and less crime. There has been a positive resolution on the disagreement in Kopanong, that the first people who were moved there will no longer be evicted. While there is some positive light, the situation of informal settlements in Gauteng is still an ongoing problem while others blame mis-use of funds by Government when they should be channeling the money to housing. Areas like Kopanong, Protea South and Eikenhof informal settlements, residents still lack some basic needs that are stated by the constitution. While elections are normally used as a tool to impress people like this, with people still facing so much problems here, such as the unavailability of water, electricity and proper toilets, the vote can go any direction in these areas.

He said Mandela was one of the finest leaders the ANC and Africa has ever produced. President Jacob Zuma late on Thursday night announced Madiba's passing from the Union Buildings. He said Mandela had passed on peacefully in the company of his family. “We have indeed lost a colossus, an epitome of humanity, equality, justice, peace and the hope of millions, here and abroad. “His mortal material may have given up, but he will live with us in our memory,” Mabuza said. Mandela spent almost three months in hospital this year after being admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in June with a recurring lung infection. He was discharged in September and was receiving home-based medical care. In preparation for the memorial services in the province, Mabuza has requested that all community halls in the province be reserved for this purpose. According to Mabuza, there will also be a book where people can write their condolence messages. – SAnews.gov.za

NELSON MANDELA, A LEADER, A PEACE MAKER AND FATHER OF THE NATION The AIP mourns and lower its flags at the passing of Mandela. We will continue to live up to his spirit and courage in the fight for freedom for all. He might be physically be gone but he will be forever with us! The passing of a leader, hero, peace maker and courageous man has shocked the nation this morning. Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela dies at 95 years after a long battle of recurring lung infection. It is a sad day for all South Africans across the world but also comforting to see the nation celebrating Mandela’s life as it mourns.

“The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials. It must have sufficient independence from vested interests to be bold and inquiring without fear or favor. It must enjoy the protection of the constitution, so that it can protect our rights as citizens”. Nelson Mandela, 14 February 1994, Cape Town.

TRIBUTE TO DR RHOLIHLAHLA NELSON MANDELA Former President Nelson Mandela was hailed on Tuesday as a champion of reconciliation as world leaders, international guests and ordinary South Africans gathered for his Memorial Service at FNB stadium.

REMEMBERING MADIBA Three years ago, South Africans packed the same stadium in celebrating the first ever Soccer World Cup to be played on African soil in 2010. On that cold winter night, a smiling Mandela made his last public appearance at the closing ceremony. But on Tuesday, South Africans gathered there to convey their goodbyes to the man who will be remembered for his role in defeating an unjust system and uniting the country's people. Dignatries have described him as a hero, a revered statesman and a devoted family man whose love kept his family together despite being incarcerated for nearly three decades.

HONORABLE SPEAKERS

“I fought against black domination. I fought against white domination” without prospects for the future. “We will never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. But let me say to the young people of Africa and the young people around the world, you too can make his life worth your own.”

and security fences and away from the suffering majority who yearned for political freedom in the country of their birth. As he will be laid to rest on Sunday, leaders praised Mandela's contribution in forging the new South Africa and avoided a potential civil war after the assassination of Communist Party leader Chris Hani during the height of the negotiations with the apartheid state.

He said 30 years ago, while he was still a student he learnt of Madiba and the struggles taking place in South Africa. He said it stirred something in him. “It woke me up to my responsibility to others and myself and it put me on a journey to Mandela was also instrumental in where I am today.” brokering peace between the Inkatha Freedom Party and ANC supporters in KwaZulu-Natal as what escalated He said he would always fall short into tribal clashes in that province of Madiba's example. There are threatened to derail progress towards many comparisons that have been made between Obama and Madiba - a new and democratic state. SAnews.gov.za including that each served as their nation's first black President and both were awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. “We will miss him deeply. May God bess the memory of Mandela and bless the people of South Africa,” said Obama, to the applause of the many people gathered.

MADIBA’S SERVICE DELIVERY

Former President Nelson Mandela's life was about the service to others, his grandson General Thanduxolo Mandela said on Tuesday. "His life was about service to others," he said at the national Memorial Service for the former statesman at FNB stadium. "I can see Mandela is smiling from above from the equality of men, brotherhood and humanity displayed here," he went on to say. He was speaking on behalf of the family. He called on mourners to keep Madiba's spirit alive.

OBAMA US President Barack Obama thanked South Africa for sharing former President Nelson Mandela with the world. "It is an honour to be with you today, to celebrate a life like no other. "To the people of South Africa, people of all walks of life and every race - the world thanks you for sharing Nelson Mandela with us! "His struggle was your struggle. His triumph was your triumph," Obama told the thousands of mourners who had braved the rain to pay their last respects to the elder statesman. Obama said Mandela was the last great liberator of the 20th century. He was committed to democracy and rule of law, and received the adoration he deserved. He said Madiba could admit to imperfection. "We loved him so....He was a man of flesh and blood, a son and a husband...that's why we learnt so much from him." Obama quoted the word Ubuntu, to loud cheers from the crowds. Obama said Madiba not only embodied Ubuntu, but taught millions to find that within themselves. He said like South Africa, the US had overcome years of segregation. “Like her, it took the sacrifices of countless people to see the dawn of a new day. Michelle and I are beneficiaries of that struggle, but in America and in South Africa and in countries around the world … our work is not yet done.” He said around the world there were still children suffering from hunger and disease; there were run down schools and young people

ROUSSEFF For her part, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said Madiba was a source of inspiration for similar struggles around the world. She said Madiba showed "enlightenment" and she commended his "moral and ethical superiority.” Mandela was a "great leader who belonged to the Pantheon of humankind. "Long Live (Viva!) Mandela forever!" she said to loud cheer from the crowd.

AFRICA MOURNING

His grandchildren namely: Mbuso Mandela, Andile Mandela, Zozuko Dlamini and Phumla Mandela also delivered their tributes to applause from the crowds gathered at the stadium. Andile spoke of reconciliation and walking in Madiba's footsteps. Mandela was described as a great tree that has fallen.

African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said from north to west, from east to centre and west – Africa was mourning but also celebrating the life of Madiba. “We stand proud of you Madiba, who represents the best in African values,” she said, speaking at the official memorial service for former President Nelson Mandela at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Dlamini Zuma said his humanity, his compassion, his courage and openness meant that working with him, listening to him, talking to him was always a lesson.

“This stadium holds tens of thousands of people but it could not contain our pain today. South Africa MLANGENI has lost a hero, a father. Residents of Mkhondo will also take part in the memorial services scheduled to take place at Mbombela, Ermelo and Soweto. Later in the afternoon, Executive Mayor Bhekabantu Mtshali addressed members of the community, civil society structures and Heads of Government Departments. Mtshali expressed his condolences and praised the late President Mandela for the role he played in the struggle against apartheid. “The nation acknowledges the wisdom and honesty President Nelson Mandela showed in his entire life; Executive Mayor Mtshali alluded.

PROVERBS 3 GUIDANCE FOR THE YOUNG: Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favour and high esteem in the sight of God and man. LIFE LESSON: Mercy without truth can lead to ungodly compromise; truth without mercy can lead to unfeeling legalism. When we purse both equally and simultaneously, we reflect the heart of God and bring Him great pleasure.

MOVING YOUR BUSINESS FROM GOOD TO GREAT BUSINESS INSPIRATION, GOOD TO GREAT, GREATNESS LEAVE A COMMENT n business stagnation is not a Whilst some risks were not ethical, noble character. Your business it still had to take the risk. The has to be moving, growing and word risk in the Aramaic language conquering new terrains all the means “to earn one’s bread.” Now time. It has to outrun its to earn one’s bread may at times competitors and move from good to mean a few risky decisions that great. In a fast paced world like we must be taken. have today, how do you achieve that? I have three suggestions for 3. Take steps that will sustain you which are simple yet impactful. greatness

I

1. Never settle for just good The problem with most businesses, is that they stop growing as soon as they have their first success. It is normal for businesses to think that they have arrived when the first major deal comes in. Understand that your last success can be your downfall. This is because you spend time reeling in its glory instead of being forward looking. So never settle for what is good if you can be great. Never settle for good results, good profit margins, good turnover, good staff compliment etc. Always strive to outshine yourself and outdo your last success. 2. Always be willing to take risks The worse this a business person can do is to fear to risk. In fact failure to risk, is a risk on its own. When you know that the returns will be great, then you have to be willing to face any situation no matter how risky it appears and be willing to go where others would are not go. Any multimillion corporation that exists in the world today, it is standing because of the risks it had to take to be where it is.

When greatness is attained, the challenging thing will be to sustain the greatness you have attained. It is often easy to reach the top of the pyramid in business, but staying up there is always a challenge for any business executive. You have to be deliberate about success. In other words success shouldn’t have caught you by surprise. So put systems into place that will help you sustain your level of success and keep growing. Market leaders are those who have found a formula of sustain their greatness. An evening with OBK The survival of the soul in Hip Hop can point a finger at the crooners that supply us with the hooks that we jam to, which more often than not, are the first things we latch onto in a song before we learn to recite the rappers' verses. The upcoming instalment of Matisong showcases Mahikeng made and based Hip Hop singing sensation OBK. OBK scored his first break through as a musician when he got a feature on Motsweding FM's DJ D-Mos' second album in which he did vocals to the song: “Walking in the moonlight. OBK has since then worked with amongst others, DJ Lemonka on his Motswako Mixtape 2. His debut album which is set to be released under Lemonka's 3rd Element Entertainment label is expected in 2014. Maitisong will host this steadily evolving musical legend on the 14th of December at Mmabana Head Office; doors will open at 19h00.

Maitisong is expected to redress numerous challenges that characterize the North West province's alternative art industries through the provision of spaces, technical and administrative support services. Through its programs, the project will further create viable working relationships and networks between independent producers, artists and stakeholder institutions.

The Dictionary For Success Addicts Attitude …! With Ackson King Mwami

“Ask and it will be given to you; Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7 –NIV) I have been listening to a lot of our young people express their views about attitude. Kindly allow me to break some 21st century beliefs about attitude before I dig further. Your attitude does not depend on how the other person treats you, your attitude depends on how you choose to respond to the treatment of the other person.

S

econd correction, attitude is not a negative word, it can be both negative and positive. So the next time someone says you have an attitude, ask, a positive or negative one? Most of the time I commend some people and say to them; "wow! You have an attitude!” They always come back to ask "what WRONG have I done?" And I always

find myself saying you just did everything right. What is Attitude? Now this is a big question. For Success Addicts, I believe that attitude is simply an emotional reaction to the information you have collected over a period of time be it about yourself, family, philosophy, concepts, etc. Every time someone says something that you think is true, do you realize how excited and keen you become? That's simply a way of you reacting to positive information someone confirmed that you already know. How about if someone called you ugly?

The reason for this is simple. Someone said something contrary to the information and perception you have created about yourself, hence the negative attitude. Your gift will usher you into the gates of great people, but your attitude will determine the duration you will last in the presence of this great people.

Actually I have come to know that in life nothing is either difficulty or easy, everything depends on your attitude towards it. Hey what about giving a smile to that challenge that is standing in front of you right now? I always say, if you feel that no one understands you, maybe trying Oh yes! You will frown or even respond back explaining with a smile, because we all smile with a very strong tone of an angry voice. using the language!

HIV/AIDS By Dr Ananya Mandal, MD AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome and is the final stage of the infection caused by the virus called HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The virus causes severe damage to the immune system. A retrovirus, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was identified in 1983 as the pathogen responsible for the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is characterized by changes in the population of T-cell lymphocytes that play a key role in the immune defense system. In the infected individual, the virus causes a depletion of T-cells, called “T-helper cells”, which leaves these patients susceptible to opportunistic infections, and certain malignancies. Credit: CDC/ C. Goldsmith, P. Feorino, E. L. Palmer, W. R. McManus How many people does HIV/AIDS affect? AIDS is the sixth leading cause of death among people aged 25 - 44 in the United States. This is an improvement since it was the number one killer in 1995. At the end of 2010, an estimated 91,500 people in the UK were living with HIV. Of these, around 1 in 4 (22,000 in total) did not know they were infected. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 34 million people in the world are living with HIV. The virus is particularly widespread in sub-Saharan African countries, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Cause of AIDS AIDS is caused by HIV infection. The virus attacks the immune system leaving the individual susceptible to life-threatening infections and cancers. Common bacteria, yeast, parasites, and viruses that usually do not cause serious disease in people with healthy immune systems can turn deadly for AIDS patients. How is HIV transmitted HIV is found in all the body fluids including saliva, nervous system tissue and spinal fluid, blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, which is the liquid that comes out before ejaculation, vaginal secretions, tears and breast milk. Only blood, semen, and breast milk have been shown to transmit infection to others. The virus is transmitted by sexual contact including unprotected oral, vaginal, and anal sex and via transfusion of contaminated blood that contains HIV. Another mode of transmission is sharing needles or injections with HIV infected individuals. A pregnant woman can transmit the virus to her unborn baby through their shared blood circulation, or a nursing mother can transmit it to her baby in her breast milk. HIV infection does not spread by casual contact, mosquitoes, touching or hugging. Who is at risk? Those at highest risk include injection drug users who share needles, babies born to mothers with HIV (especially if the mother had not received anti- HIV therapy during pregnancy), those engaging in unprotected vaginal or anal sex with HIV positive individuals, and those who received blood transfusions or clotting products between 1977 and 1985 (before screening for HIV became standard practice).

Symptoms of HIV/AIDS HIV infection may cause no symptoms for a decade or longer. At this stage carriers may transmit the infection to others unknowingly. If the infection is not detected and treated, the immune system gradually weakens and AIDS develops. Acute HIV infection takes a few weeks to months to become a non-symptomatic HIV infection. Then it becomes early symptomatic HIV infection and later it progresses to AIDS. How is the progress of the disease marked? With advancing HIV infection the blood shows higher viral load and CD4 T-cell count drops below 200 cells/mm3. CD4 cells are a type of T cell. T cells are cells of the immune system. They are also called "helper cells." There is a small group of patients who develop AIDS very slowly, or never at all. These patients are called nonprogressors, and many seem to have a genetic difference that prevents the virus from significantly damaging their immune system. Opportunistic infections These are infections that normally do not affect an individual with a healthy immune system but AIDS patients are susceptible to these infections. These include viral infections like: · herpes simplex virus · herpes zoster infection · cancers like Kaposi sarcoma, nonHodgkin's lymphoma · fungal infections like candidiasis · bacterial infections like tuberculosis Other infections include Bacillary angiomatosis, Candida esophagitis, Pneumocystic jiroveci pneumonia, AIDS dementia, Cryptosporidium diarrhea, cryptococcal meningigits and Toxoplasma encephalitis. Treatment of AIDS There is no cure for AIDS once it develops. There are agents available that can help keep symptoms at bay and improve the quality and length of life for those who have already developed symptoms. Drugs against HIV include antiretroviral therapy. These prevent the replication of the HIV virus in the body. A combination of several antiretroviral drugs, called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), has been very effective in reducing the number of HIV particles in the bloodstream. Preventing the virus from replicating can improve T-cell counts or CD4 cell counts and help the immune system recover from the HIV infection. Medicines are also prescribed to prevent opportunistic infections if the CD4 counts are low. Outcome of HIV AIDS is almost always fatal without treatment. HAART however has dramatically increased the amount of time people with HIV remain alive. Prevention of HIV Safe sex measures with use of condoms, shunning use of illicit drugs or shared needles or syringes, avoidance of contact with blood and fluids by wearing protective clothing, masks, and goggles etc. helps prevent transmission. HIV-positive women who wish to become pregnant may need therapy while they are pregnant to prevent transmission to their babies. The Public Health Service recommends that HIVinfected women in the United States avoid breastfeeding to prevent transmitting HIV to their infants through breast milk.
