Vaginal Ring Offers Partial HIV Protection By Kerry Cullinan

A

vaginal ring that releases antiretroviral (ARV) medicine slowly over a month provides women with moderate protection against HIV infection. The ring worked best in women over the age of 25, where it protected over half of women from HIV. (File photo) One-third fewer women were infected with HIV when using the ring filled with the ARV, dapivirine, than women using a ring without the ARV, according to results from two big trials released yesterday. The ring worked best in women over the age of 25, where it protected over half of women from HIV. However, researchers say that many of

the younger women did not keep the ring inside their vaginas for the whole month, based on blood tests they conducted to check the level of the ARV in the women’s bodies. The two trials – called Ring and Aspire – involved almost 4 600 women, 70 percent of whom came from trial sites in South Africa. “Today, we have turned a corner in HIV prevention,” said Dr Annalene Nel, chief medical officer of International Partnership for Microbicides and study director for The Ring Study. demonstrating that a femalecontrolled HIV prevention method can safely help reduce new HIV infections.”

“We have seen the potential of an ARV ring, and must now work to fully realise this potential for women worldwide,” added Nel, speaking from an international AIDS conference in Boston where the results were released. Dr Jared Baeten from the Aspire study, said the results were “a glass half-full moment”.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi welcomed the results, saying: “Every advance in science that empowers women to protect themselves from the virus should be considered for rapid adoption and implementation.”

“The HIV prevention field for women has struggled in the last few years and at times the glass had seemed almost completely empty,” said Baeten. “Now, for the first time, we have two trials

As the dapirvirine ring only offers partial protection from HIV, it would be difficult to market it as a stand-alone product and researchers are meeting next month to decide on their next steps.

The vaginal ring is made of flexible silicone and slowly releases 25 mg of dapivirine over the course of 28 days. Dapivirine is a potent ARV that blocks the virus at the point of infection, and it was well tolerated by the women who did not report any side effects. Vaginal ring

doubts while some doubt their beliefs! Some believe they have been cursed to bad luck till eternity while some believe that the devil has a vendetta and has sent an army of demons to torment them. Believe in yourself. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are wrong! Just correct the program in your mind, do what you have to do and God Almighty will do the rest. I am not sure how many of you have been to a hypnosis session either live or on video. Amazing isn"t it? You can hypnotize yourself to up your game and manifest your desires. Hypnosis is you accepting a suggestion and acting upon it as if it is real. The trick is to focus on it and not be distracted. How many times has a suggestion come to you through your subconscious mind or another person and you failed to act upon it. That way you never realised the end of it but to those who did, some of them are glad today that they did.

you can re-program yourself for success and it starts in your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is your built in GPS system. It tells you where you are in your life. If you are on course, it helps you feel good but alas! If you run off course, the stress, the depression that will bombard you will be like skud missiles falling on enemy troops! You will end up thinking that Satan has a personal war with you! I suffered from stress and depression once when my business was not doing well. So I know what I am talking about. During that period, I lost valuable employees and opportunities. I was admitted for depression. Someone came to me like a God send one day and said, "look at what you are losing while you remain in this closet!" Immediately my subconscious mind picked up the suggestion and embraced it. A small voice said to me from inside, "It all starts in the mind, success or failure! " All of a sudden I had this

engulfed me and the depression was gone. What was left was the stress to achieve the goals that I set myself then. I even set forth to write a book: "It's All In The Mind" to help others to avoid falling into this deadly pit. Though we learn from History that people never learn anything from History, I am confident that this book, because it is not entirely History, it will help many to re-program their minds correctly so as to up their game in life. Next week, we will talk about this GPS System and how you can re-program it for destination success. Going forward, I will also teach you a simple technique that you can use to stay on course and not loose focus. Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." But councillors get well paid, so you need to be sure that the candidate you vote for is capable of doing the job. Here are some ways to help you elect a good ward councillor.

? A ward councillor has to understand three things well in order to be able to represent the interests of you and your community. If they don't have a good understanding of these three things, they can't be good councillors, and they will not be able to represent you properly. Unfortunately, even if they have other good qualities, such as honesty and being hard workers and good communicators, they still have to have this essential knowledge: it's what the job is about

First, the candidate must have a good knowledge of the community ? the candidate must understand the community well and know its main problems. Find out if the candidate knows: ? The number of women, men and children living in the ward; ? How many people are employed

hief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality faces a possible power outage of its electricity supply and continuing indefinitely from 11 April 2015. Should Municipality in principle neglect to avert this impending looming interruption of bulk electricity supply scheduled for implementation from 11 April by meeting the power utility financial obligations, Eskom reserve the right to swiftly disconnect electricity supply? This follows defaulting on existing payment term and payment arrangements set by the power utility for supply of electricity to make an outstanding payment owed to the power utility. The collective Municipal debts owed to the cash-strapped utility is R32 Million this is threatening the financial sustainability of Eskom in Mpumalanga. The contemplation interruption of bulk electricity supply to the defaulting Municipality set to cause undue hardships to consumers as Non-payment for electricity undermines their statutory obligation to generate and supply electricity to municipalities nationally on a financial sustainable basis.

Eskom has in principle defended its obligation to cut off peak time electricity should the Municipality fail to avert the looming interruption bulk of electricity should the Municipality fail the outstanding debt Chief Albert Luthuli Municipal Spokesman Mr David Nhlabathi payment agreement negotiations are still on the cards to reach an amicable solution and avert the proposed impending power outage The Municipality is riddle with electricity theft and illegal connections perpetrators this immensely contribute to the huge balance owed to Eskom. Tax players who diligently pay their Municipal bills every month also suffer the pinch of the other culprits due to poor financial management of the Municipality caused by consumers. Defaulting on municipal payment accounts is one of the predicaments that have struck a major blow in the economy of the Municipality. Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality set to tackle harsh measures to militate against the current imminent rolling blackout scourge, however Nhlabathi said the collection strategies cannot be divulge to the media.

Municipal Finance Management Act. A candidate who doesn't know these things doesn't know how municipal finances work – and can't represent you and your community properly. You must check if the candidate has this knowledge to do the job. If they don't have a good knowledge of the community, a clear understanding of how local government works and how its finances are planned and managed, then how can they represent you properly?

Ethical Leadership Skills –the candidate must be honest and trustworthy, and must promote the interest of the community, not his or her private interests. You must be confident that the candidate will not be bullied by powerful people who want them to support decisions that are not in the best interests of the community or may even be illegal. If they cannot stand up for their community, or against corruption, then they cannot represent you properly. Transparency – can the candidate discuss issues, even difficult problems, openly and publicly instead of trying to hide things away? You don't want a councillor who does

things in secret, behind your back. Accept Criticism – can the candidate accept criticism (especially constructive criticism) and use it to improve their performance? Depression And The Implications For Your Insurance Cover

Hayley Taylor - Hollard Life

B

ased on the information that you provide about your depression, an insurer may choose to charge you a higher premium. They may also apply what is called a 'permanent suicide exclusion', which means that they won't pay out if you take your own life. An insurer may choose to apply a 'depression exclusion' on disability and income benefits because depression and associated conditions like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia (a disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue) can leave you unable to work for periods of time. Some depression is temporary and happens as a reaction to a particular situation like the death of a loved one or having a baby (post-natal depression). This is called reactive depression and Hollard Life wouldn't charge you a higher premium for this kind of depression as long as it has been successfully treated.

fter the nail biting season 1 finale, viewers can look forward to finding out who survived the terrible shoot out rampage by the deranged Tsietsi Namane. The second season of the gripping, fast paced telenovela, will hit our screens on Monday, 14 March at 8PM on e.tv. The telenovela is set against the backdrop of a family-owned business in Tembisa, Namane Funerals. The funeral parlour is headed by the husband and wife duo, Mandlakazi and Selogile Namane, who inherited it from their parents. The pair have created an empire with the assistance of their children Tsietsi, Monwabisi and most recently, Reba Namane. On the surface all looks well, but the Namane family is haunted by deep, dark secrets, which are constantly swept under the carpet to keep the family intact. “The show played an integral role in launching the 8PM telenovela slot for the channel and viewers couldn't get enough of it. We are thrilled about the new season of Ashes to Ashes and are sure that it will keep viewers consistently entertained”,

said Monde Twala, Managing Director for e.tv Channels Division. The first season allowed the Namane family to reinforce its presence in South African prime time television. In the second season, the changing power dynamics in the Namane family will bring fierce action to the fore. “Ashes to Ashes 2, promises to bring all the thrills, drama, love, hate and the complications that South Africans have come to expect from the series”, said Genna Lewis, Series Producer at Clive Morris Productions. A series of scandalous dramatic moments, lead to the truth about the father of Mpho's baby being revealed. Shocking events continue to follow the Namane family, threatening the future of the funeral parlour and the Namane family as we know it. Love, support, and unity are put to the test when Selo makes a life changing decision which results in regret and despise. Ashes to Ashes season 2 returns with much anticipated drama, new characters and more grim secrets that will further shatter the family unit. Some

of Mzansi's favourite actors will take on new roles in season 2. Tina Jaxa plays Nokulunga Rhadebe, Mandlakazi's estranged and feisty cousin. Atandwa Kani is Buzwe Sihlahla, Tsietsi's no nonsense lawyer. Industry veteran, Nandi Nyembe makes a debut as Detective Nkonzo's mother, Ma Nkonzo, who has a score to settle with the Namanes. The new talent will join the stellar season 1 cast which includes Patrick Shai (Selo), Nambitha Mpumlwana (Mandlakazi), Zenande Mfenyana (Reba), Menzi Ngubane (Detective Nkozo), Nyaniso Dze Dze (Tsietsi), Chumani Pan (Monwabisi), Nyalleng Thibedi (Mpho), Craig Urbani (Mickey), Maggie Benedict (Violet), Mandla Gaduka (Damien) and Stitch played by Richard Lukunku. s such, if you have any questions about your finance or deal, now is the last time to ask them. The F&I will have a checklist of important points that you have to completely understand before signing your contract and taking delivery of your new car. If you don't understand anything then you can ask for clarification and simpler explanations. Don't rush the signing process. Rather make sure you understand everything, so that you aren't surprised a month or two down the line. Get familiar with finance In the process of arranging your contract you'll be given the option to choose a fixed or linked interest rate. Know the difference, and how this will affect your budget in the short and long term. A fixed interest rate on your loan will be higher at first, but it will also remain the same for the duration of the loan. Conversely, a linked interest rate will be lower at first, and save you money. However, it also increases – and so will your monthly car instalment – when the Reserve Bank changes interest rates. Make a decision about the contract period. This is how long you'll be paying off the loan. You can choose from 12 months, all the way to 72 months. However, the longer the contract, the more you end up paying in interest and fees. Ensure you know the advantages of putting down a big deposit. By doing so you will save on interest payments, and have lower monthly repayments. If you have opted for a balloon payment to have lower, more affordable monthly repayments, make doubly sure that you know how much you will owe at the end of the finance term. Try to save money to help pay this off at the end of the contract, or else you'll need a new loan to cover the balloon payment. To Be Continued next issue

ales consultants who stay focused and motivated typically get promoted from within – between Oct 2014 and Sep 2015, O'Keeffe & Swartz promoted 23 sales consultants to sales manager positions. There is a wonderful opportunity to start and grow your career in a call centre and for the right candidate, a career in outbound sales call centre has a great deal to offer,” adds Albert. A growing industry in South Africa The outbound call centre industry is also seeing considerable growth on the back of South Africa's burgeoning bancassurance (the sale of insurance products through banks) sector. Despite being a relatively new player in the insurance space, bancassurance is rapidly growing as customers make an easier association between their banking provider and taking additional risk products such as funeral policies, debt protection, hospital plans and personal accident and disability benefits.
