Council Chair Speaks:
Greetings, my fellow MD1 Lions, or “Saluti i miei compagni MD1 Leoni” in Italian. I have just returned from my trip to Milan, Italy for the Lions Clubs International Convention. Our new International President, Dr. Jung-Yul Choi has picked as his theme “We Serve Through Diversity”. We serve all people in all places. Lions are a shining example to the world of the good that can be accomplished by uniting in harmony. We’re known for our strength and ability to help others—and this is only accomplished through diversity. The New Voices Initiative will continue in the 2019-2020 year. Its goal continues to promote gender parity and diversity and to seek to increase the number of women, young adults and underrepresented populations within our association. These are the 8 focus areas for service that that Dr. Choi will emphasize during his year. 1. Vision* 2. Youth 3. Disaster Relief 4. Humanitarian 5. Diabetes* 6. Hunger* 7. Environment* 8. Childhood Cancer* (* also a LCIF Global Cause) I hope every club can participate one or more activities in each of the focus areas this year. The incoming Governors are looking forward to continuing the work of the prior council in moving Illinois forward. The first item on our agenda will be to finish establishing the new State Office location in Springfield and filling the State Secretary2
Treasurer position. Until that is done the last council chair Darren VanDuyn will assist us with some of those duties as he has done during the past six months until that position is filled. The 201-2020 Council is committed to being as open and transparent as we can possibly be. We will be starting the year with 2 council meetings in August to get us off to a good start. The August 4th council meeting will cover items that would have normally been taken care of at the convention. Since many of the Illinois Lions, and 3 of incoming Governors could not make it to Milan this year we opted to hold off until we returned. In this way everyone can be represented at the initial meeting council meeting. The 2nd Council Meeting will occur 2 weeks later, on August 17th. This meeting would have normally occurred in early September, but the Governors in the Council had some conflicts in September, and we also wanted to get an early start on setting up the new state office and filling the State Secretary/ Treasurer position. A MD-1 Global Action Team workshop will follow the August 17th council meeting in order to get started on the Lions of Illinois Goals for this coming year. In closing I want to stress that your Council of Governors is committed to serving you, the Lions of Illinois. -Jerome Perez, MD1 Council Chair -------------------------------------------------------------------Greetings, my fellow MD1 Lions, or “Saluti i miei compagni MD1 Leoni” in Italian. As I write this I am preparing for my trip to Milan, Italy for the Lions Clubs International Convention. I am excited to meet the other Governors leading our association this year, and to hear about the progress we have made in the last year as an organization. The incoming council would first like to thank the outgoing council for their hard work over the last year. They did an outstanding job for the Illinois Lions. The incoming council of governors for 2019-2020 are as follows: 1- A Joan McMillian (Secretary)

We looking forward to continuing the work of the prior council moving Illinois moving forward. The first item on our agenda will be to finish establishing the new State Office location in Springfield and filling the State Secretary-Treasurer position. Until that is done the current council chair Darren will assist us with some of those duties as he has done during the past six months until that position is filled. Our council is committed to serving you, the Lions of Illinois. Keep up the good work that you do.
Many of our clubs help local communities; however, as an International Association, we have an obligation to take part in Lions Club International and it’s foundation. As a Secretary of Lions of Illinois Foundation, I wouldn’t deny that our own Foundation in Illinois need our funds to meet our numerous projects and activities; however, this is a special time to join our hands to support International foundation. Let us support Lions of Illinois Foundation’s fundraisers and hold a separate fundraiser for ‘Campaign 100’. Let us all Illinois Lions congratulate PDG Bob Block who is our new International Director from MD1. May his term filled with all successes and bring glory to his activites. -Dr. Austin D’Souza, Editor ILStateEditor@gmail.com
From State Leadership Chairperson:
CCE Lion Jerome Perez sycamorejerry@gmail.com Editor’s Note:
We have new goals and new mission this year to accomplish. All of us in our clubs sat together in jotting down our club programs to meet our Annual Goals. Our first goal is to increase in membership as we need more hands to make our projects successful and serve communities. Secondly, we have to fulfill Lions Clubs International’s goals which are given to us. Amongst all ‘Campaign 100’ takes priority. 3
As Lions, our clubs, first and foremost, provide service to our local communities. Meeting these needs is as diverse as each community. Plus, as Lions we are part of a larger global service community as well. As part of this global community, we need to stay connected to the programs and services being promoted by Lions Clubs International and Lions Clubs International Foundation.

As well, our MD1 state website and FB page have been refreshed for the new Lion year as well. I am making one more change to add a page for our newest ID Bob Block, but otherwise, our sites should be up to date and fully active already. Our FB page has 2,462 followers as of now, and our email list used weekly by the website and for other special ondemand emailing has about 1,000 email addresses on it. I believe our website, email, and FB page work well in getting the word out across the state quickly when needed. I'm glad to assist you in any way I can to help get your committee information out when needed. Just drop me an email or phone call at any time I can help. There is a link on the website home page for any Lion to request to have their email address added to our statewide distribution list. Feel free to distribute that link as far and wide as you wish so we can keep building. We do not get updates from LCI. Congratulations, again, on your role for the year. Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if I can be of service. It is my pleasure to serve with you. It is with much respect the St.Elmo Lions Club announces our 2020 Club President. He has been with the club for eighteen years and can’t seem to get enough. Although we feel certain his middle name must be “Service,” it is more likely to be “Organizational.” He has served as the St.Elmo Lions Club President for sixteen years and has agreed to carry on as our leader for yet another term! Thank you so much, David Maxey, for all you have done to serve as an example for the rest of us. The article below is from Leader Dogs “Update”, Issue 2. Raising a Future Leader Dog, a Life-Changer Raising a Future Leader Dog, a Life-Changer Each year, we have a goal to match 200 Leader Dogs with 200 individuals who are blind or visually impaired. To do so, we rely on the continued dedication and support of 400+ volunteer puppy raisers, both new and returning! Every puppy raiser gives 12–15 months of their time, energy and love to raising a puppy for us. Through daily care and training, puppy raisers provide the solid foundation of socialization

and skills our puppies need to begin formal guide dog training upon their return to Leader Dog. We are extremely grateful to every one of these amazing volunteers.
What would you say to someone who is considering raising a puppy for Leader Dog? Mary: “I would tell future raisers to ask questions of their counselors, other raisers and the puppy development team. You’re not in this alone.” Kathy: “If you have time and patience the rewards will far exceed your efforts and expectations.” What has kept you raising puppies for Leader Dog? Mary: “I keep raising to learn more techniques to be a better raiser. I also enjoy the company of likeminded people and have made quite a few friends.” Joe & Trudy: “The clients and what our puppies mean to them. Learning about how the puppies change their lives in so many ways, and what the next story will be in our puppy’s life.”
Recently, we had the privilege of sitting down with four current puppy raisers to get their insight into their own puppy raising experiences. How many Future Leader Dogs have you raised? Mary St. Clair: “Future Leader Dog Enzo is the 7th puppy I have raised for Leader Dog.” Joe & Trudy Nowak: “We are raising puppy number 8 at this time. His name is George Orwell.” Kathy Pardee: “We are first time puppy raisers. Learning together. Every day. And hopefully will be able to raise many more!” What has been the most unexpected part of the puppy raising experience for you? Joe & Trudy: “Watching our puppies mature into working dogs. When we say that, we mean when the light switch goes on when they are around four months old. They know they are different from other dogs. Best learning experience ever.” Kathy: “The most unexpected part was the amazing joy [Future Leader Dog] Shayne has brought to our lives!”

We have an amazing community of puppy raisers. Many have formed lifelong friendships through their raising experiences. If you have been considering raising a puppy for Leader Dog, now is the time... to not only change the life of someone who is blind or visually impaired, but also your own. Please visit LeaderDog.org or call 888.777.5332 to learn more and apply to raise a Future Leader Dog. Any monetary contribution made to Leader Dogs for the Blind and sent thru our Lions of IL Foundation will receive the same recognition from Leader Dogs and will be increased by up to 10%. Any questions about this, or anything pertaining to Leader Dogs, please feel free to contact me at diamondp@mchi.com. “Making People Unstoppable!” --------------------------------------------------------------------
