Recently IndianStar,Mr.RatanTata,hasbeen awarded The 'Order of Australia (AO)Thehighestcivilhonourinthe country for outstanding contributions to Fostering Ties BetweenIndiaandAustrlia,specially inareassuchasTrade,Business,and philanthropy..... Prof Elizabeth's career in the field of child and family services, for which she was recognised, spans 45 years inAustralia.Ithasseenconsiderable contributions,especiallytothelived experience and long-term outcomesofadultswhoaschildren were raised in out-of-home care. These include her extensive research on Forgotten Australians, membersoftheStolenGenerations, and British Child Migrants. “My workearlyinIndiawasfoundational in this regard,” the Mangalore-born

Chennai-raised Prof Fernandez told thePress.

She went on to say, “Soon after my master’s degree in social work at Madras University, now Chennai, I foundedthefirstprofessionalfoster care service in India. It was quite a paradigm shift, to create care for vulnerable children within a family environment, allowing participating parents to undertake care responsibilitiesforthedeprivedand vulnerable in their own homes.” Operating this service for five years at the Madras School of Social Work, she was able to create greater consciousness that congregate care was not providing the benefits of family relationships. The pilot program was later extended to Bombay, delivered by Nirmala Niketan. She then embarkedonanacademiccareerin heralmamaterStellaMarisCollege at Madras, becoming Head of the Department of Social Work. ShemovedtoAustraliain1978,and took a PhD researching children removed from their families, studying the factors that enabled themtoreturntotheirfamiliesafter

an episode in care. Today she is an acknowledgedauthorityinthefield. “I feel privileged and grateful,” she said of her AM honour. “It is a validation of my work and contributiontoAustralia.Itisalsoan acknowledgement of the importance of social science research and how it addresses the needsofmarginalisedpeople.Also, it recognises teaching and learning in the higher education space. Hopefully it will be noticed, and influence social policy.”

In India, Carl worked for Fertilizer Corporation of India, Gorakhpur(7 years) and subsequently at Madras Fertilizers as Superintendent (7 years). We have2sonsNigelandCarlyle.Nigel (Electrical Engineer) is Engineering Manager NSW Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Australia and Carlyle (pharmacist) is National Sales Manager for Nova Pharma.. tomes, confirms much of the "Fernandez '' family's renown as passed down by family members. This family of Rosario Cathedral, to which our Australian protagonist Elizabeth Fernandez belongs, is known to be of 'Spanish' origin (Eurasian), uses the spelling 'Fernandez';inSpanishtheletter'Z' is pronounced as 'S'. The earliest known member of the Mangalore based 'Fernandez Family' is 'Francisco Fernandez' of Spanish originestimated to have beenborn around 1735 AD. When Jesuits were expelled from Portugal, a leading Jesuit Paul De Rossa, came to India along with 4 Jesuit colleagues and a 'mutual Spanish friend' - that was Francisco Fernandez. It is estimated they, arrivedinIndiaabout1760AD and for good reason took up assignmentsinthe'ArmsFactory'of HaiderAli,fatherofTipuSultan;the captivity of Konkani Catholics, would not have affected them, it is presumed that they married native women. Francisco Fernandez's two sons were Custodius (c1780-1859) and Thomas (c1785 ). Post captivity, one of Custodius Fernandez' sons known to be John

Francis Fernandez (1807-1883) ; in 1860JohnFrancisit isknownwasa 'Treasury Collector' said to be the highest position that an Indian could rise to in British times, his brothers too did well reach similar heights. Rev Mother Nympha Pauline Fernandez (1850-1909) the co-founder of the now flourishing Mangalore based order of Catholic Nuns "Ursuline Franciscan Sisters" nowpresentalloverIndiaandsome places in Europe and Africa. She is the daughter of John Francis Fernandez. The first convent she built, just beside the Rosario Cathedralandforlongservedasthe first Ursuline Mother House, is still seen.Itnowservesasaconventand FoundationHousewiththeheritage Meuseum of this Ursuline Order of Nuns, worth a visit. Further, to conclude, the ongoing accomplishemnts of Elizabeth Fernandez, based in Sydney, Australia: She is also recipient of the 2019 International Society for Child Indicators (ISCI) Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the field of child indicators research from an international perspective.

Describing her work, she said, “’Forgotten Australians’ is a term giventoanestimated500,000nonIndigenousAustralian-bornchildren who lived in children’s homes or other forms of care, whose families experienced sheer poverty and war trauma.The‘StolenGenerations’are an estimated 25,000 Aboriginal childrenwhowereforciblyremoved from their families and culture through policies of coercive

intervention. ‘British Child Migrants’ were children exported to Australia as unaccompanied minors to be looked after in Australian children’s institutions, estimated to be 10001200.” Her three-year research on these children, which ran concurrently with the Australian Government’s Royal Commission intoInstitutionalResponsestoChild Sexual Abuse, “identified physical abuse, sexual molestation, psychological abuse, educational neglect, oppressive child labour practices, and the enduring negative impacts for survivors including physical and mental health impairments, disrupted familyrelationships,alienationfrom country and culture, and compromised educational and employment outcomes. Findings from this research provided a knowledge and empirical base to argue for redress and responsive policy and services, extending learnings to contemporary care systems.”

The work is continuing, she reported. “The children are now an aging cohort, and there are concerns about aged care services

They are sceptical about being looked after in institutions again, and perhaps the answer is good support at home through homebased services.” As board member of the National Aged and Community Care Roundtable for Forgotten Australians she is deeply involved in these issues.

Amongst the major social justice issues facing Australia facing currently, Prof Elizabeth Fernandez AM lists poverty. “One in eight people, including one in six children, live belowthepovertyline,accordingto the latest ABS data (2019-20). In total, there are over three million (3,319,000) people in poverty, including761,000children.Theyare a priority for Australian welfare systems and policy to respond to.”

She added, “There are 46,000 childrenincare,arateof8per1000 children nationally. Indigenous children are disproportionately represented here – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were in out-of-home care at 30 June 2021,atarateof58per1,000.There is a vital need to address this overrepresentation through preventive and supportive services, and through addressing the entrenched socioeconomic disadvantage and other inequities they experience.”

Mangaluru, Apr 21: The Congregation of the Sisters of the LittleFlowerofBethany,Mangaluru, celebratedtheperpetualprofession of eight sisters on April 21 at Rosa MysticaConvent,Kinnikambla. TheEucharisticcelebrationwasheld at 9:30 am, officiated by the Bishop

ofMangaloreDiocese,DrPeterPaul Saldanha, and concelebrated by six priests. In his homily, the Bishop explained the sacrifices that a consecrated person is called upon to make to live the vow of chastity, poverty, and obedience. He emphasized that religious profession is an act of final submissionofone’swill,possession,

and love. The faithful are called to embrace the world with the love of Christ.

Sr Rose Celine B S, the Superior General of the Congregation, receivedthevowsandacceptedthe sistersasperpetualmembersofthe Bethany family. She congratulated the parents of the sisters and thanked them for offering their daughtersintheserviceoftheLord through Bethany. She invited everyone to be an evangelical witnessandcontinuethemissionof Jesus. It is your birthday today here on earth! You would have completed eighty-sixyears,ifyouwerearound. Well, that was not to be on 5 July 2021youweremurderedbyabrutal and fascist regime, which did not want a human rights defender like you to continue living! This is your second earthly birthday up above. Not sure how you will be celebratingit!

ButhereonearthdearStanyouare missed very much! Countless

people remember you: your compassion and commitment; your courage to identify with them and their struggles. These are mostly simple, ordinary people; the AdivasisandtheDalits;theexcluded andtheexploited,thepoorandthe marginalised. You lived in their midst;youbaskedintheirpresence; yousmelledofthesheeplikeatruly good shepherd. They celebrate you today and will always do so! There iscertainlynodoubtofthat!

But I am writing this birthday letter based on the recent conversation I had with you! I can see you smiling (you always had that halting, tentative smile – slow, gentle but warm)andIcanimagineotherswho readingthisandwithasneersaying “Conversation with Stan? There must be something wrong with

him!”Well let them say what they want – butIwill holdmyground!It was the night of April 13/14 (less than two weeks ago), Frs. Tom KavalaandP.M.Anthonyinvitedme tospendthenightinBagaicha.This was your home – before the ’powerful’sounceremoniouslytook you away on 8 October 2021 like some kind of common criminal. I was given your room to stayinand yourbedtosleepon!Itwasatotally unexpected privilege – something unforgettable which I will treasure allmylife!

That day was a very tiring one for me. I fell asleep immediately! But I wassuddenlywide-awakefeelingas refreshed as ever; at first, I wondered where I was. The fact slowlydawneduponme–Ichecked the time: I must have been asleep for less than an hour. I began tossing and turning for apparently no reason. When suddenly I felt your presence in the room. Imagination? maybe – who knows!! Iamnotwonttogiveineasilytothe ‘supernatural’. But I did share my experience with some! I began asking you questions and well, you were answering them directly and

bluntly(likethewayyoualwaysdid). We were having a conversation: something I was convinced that I hadto put down in writing;so here Igo:

CP:HiStan!Howareyouandhowis lifeupthere?

SS: Its good here – I am certainly happy; however, when I look down at what’s happening in India and to mypeople,Ifeelverysadandupset andwishIwastherewithmypeople CP:Canyoudosomethingfromup there?

SS: What nonsense! Me from up here?Haven’tIleftyouandothersa legacy? After my death there was some enthusiasm about actualising thatlegacy,butIseethatnotmuch hasbeendone.Iwonderwhy?

CP: Stan,thesimplereasonisthat we are afraid! We lack your propheticcourage!Weprefertotoe theline!Wedonotwanttodisturb thepowerful–forfearoflosingour privilegesandpossessions.

SS: Actually, it is much more than that! We have become highly institutionalised and most of our efforts (of the Jesuits and of the Church) are spent in managing/running our institutions,

protecting our interests, and trying to please the establishment (be it corporate or political). I have suffered much because of this. I have questioned our priorities, the people we cater to in our institutions and of how we do not want to risk responding radically to the realities in the same way that Jesus would have done! Our commitment should stem from a Gospel without compromise, firmly rooted in the person and message of Jesus and the Constitution of India. Very often our action is relegated to social works in the project-mould, meant to adhere to ‘dos and don’ts’ rather than in the accompaniment of people. We indulge in cosmetics and acts of tokenism rather than being visible and vocal in speaking truth to power! We tend to run with the hareandhuntwiththehound!Ifwe aresafeinourcomfortzones,wedo not want to rock the boat! We Jesuits easily forget that GC36 wantedustorowinthedeep!

CP: Stan, you always said that VaticanII,GC32andthelikesof BishopHelderCamaraandFr.Pedro Arrupe were among those who inspiredyou.Anycomments?

SS: Yes, Vatican II and its direction totheChurchmeantmuchtome!If somemoreofushadtriedtoputits teachings into practice, we would have had a quite different Church and world today. Bishop Helder Camaratried,andhewasbrandeda ‘communist’ (you know how easily they branded me too!). For me, the 32nd General Congregation had a truly clear mandate that “the mission of the Society of Jesus todayistheserviceoffaith,ofwhich the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement; for reconciliation with God demands the reconciliation of people with one another.” Fr. Pedro Arrupe wanted every Jesuit to live this mandate; sadly, many of us were afraid to do so! It is obvious today too!

CP: Whatmoredoyouthinkwe shouldbedoingtodayforamore humaneandjustsociety?

SS:Thereisindeedplentythateach one of you should be doing – both individually and collectively! Do so fearlessly! Give and do not count the cost! We must be the voice for the voiceless; for those who continue to live on the peripheries ofsociety.Wemustcollaborateand

network with other like-minded individuals,groupsandmovements; to keep our institutions and spaces open for them and to join them in theirinitiatives.

CP: Yes,Stanbutdoingallthatone willhavetopaytheprice.Itisnot easy!

SS: Certainly! Haven’t I paid the price? I suffered so much during incarceration! That is what life is all about. Just before my arrest in October 2020, I said “What is happeningtomeisnotsomething unique-happeningtomealone.Itis a broader process that is taking placealloverthecountry.Weareall awarehowprominentintellectuals, lawyers, writers, poets, activists, students,leaders,theyareallput into jail because they have expressed their dissent or raised questionsabouttherulingpowers ofIndia.Wearepartoftheprocess. InawayIamhappytobepartof this process. I am not a silent spectator,butpartofthegame,and readytopaythepricewhateverbe it”.

CP: Wow Stan! Thanks for remindingme ofthoseimmortal wordsfromyou!

SCCs as a New Way of Being Church:

of Bombay promoted SCCs in a big way in Bombay Archdiocese and theyarestillvibrantthere.Thereare, however, many dioceses and parishes where SCCs are yet to be initiated; even though there are morethan91,300SCCunitsallover India.

TheChurchinIndiahasestablished, fostered and promoted Basic Ecclesial Communities, more commonlyknownasSmallChristian Communities (SCCs) for over 50 years now. In many dioceses in Kerala,TamilNadu,Jharkhand,West Bengal, Maharashtra and many other states Small Christian Communities are a New Way of Being the Church. Bishop Bosco Penha,anAuxiliaryBishopEmeritus

Much good has been done in our diocesesthroughSCCs.Thelovefor the Word of God and love forone’s neighbour has increased through SCC meetings. More leaders have emergedfromSCCgroups.Thereis open sharing on the Word of God and candid discussion on how to helporreachouttothoseinneedin the SCC groups and in the neighbourhood. Many have even taken up some projects benefitting even the larger community. SCC animators and people who participate in the meetings have become more active in Parish activities, thus making the parishes anddiocesesmorevibrant.

SCCsarethebestpracticalwayto

live Synodality. Communion, Participation and Mission, all take place beautifully and effectively through SCCs. There are many opportunities in SCCs to listen to one another, share our common concerns,discerntogether,andtake commondecisionstohelpthepoor and needy. There is no authoritarianism or domination by anyone.AllsitaroundtheBibleand pray, discuss, and take part in decision making. Filled with the WordofGodtheysharetheinsights withoneanotherandwithothersin their workplace. Their life becomes moreexemplaryandthustheybear witnesstotheGospelandpersonof JesusChrist.

During the Pandemic and the resultant lockdown period most of the SCCs did yeomen service in reaching out to the stranded and joblessmigrantlabourers,poorand hungry, sick and deceased. Even thoughregularSCCmeetingscould not take place during this period, many humanitarian works were done by SCCs in most of the dioceses, sometimes risking their ownlives.

Need of Paradigm Shift to RespondtoEmergingChallenges:

Obviously, the good work done by SCCs, must continue and it will remain for some time to come as the new way of being the Church. However, I would like to call the attention of the readers and the Church in India to a more urgent need in the present socio-political scenario in the country and the emerging challenges faced by the Church.

Everynowandthenwehearorread about the attacks on Christian Institutions, Churches, schools, hospitals, homes etc. Pastors, sisters, faithful have been targeted and falsely accused of forceful conversion, sexual harassment, and molestation etc. Religious extremism and fundamentalism are growing. Intolerance, hatred, and violence are increasing. There are political and fundamentalist forces which polarize people based on religion and caste. They divide people with false propaganda for their own vested interests. The bogey of Conversion is quite common.

Many anti-social elements and membersofsomeorganizedgroups go around as vigilantes, taking law intotheirownhandsandattackand damage property, burn Bibles, destroystatues,andbeatuppeople. Strangely police become mute spectators or often take the side of the culprits and register FIR against theChristianswhoareinfactvictims ofattacks.

Time to Build Small Human Communities(SHCs):

We need to be pro-active and become agents of peace in our neighbourhood. Time has come now,orperhapswearelatealready but better late than never, to build Small Human Communities (SHCs) or neighbourhood communities. Wemusttakethelead.Wemustbe the agents of peace, for Jesus our Master is the Prince of Peace. The point is, we must be people of goodwill and get all the people of good will in our neighbourhood together, meet regularly, discuss common issues, see how we can shareourjoysandsorrows,festivals, and celebrations together, thus live in peace, harmony and

brotherhood.

This will obviously require concerted effort, slow, steady, and long process. Peace communities cannotbebuiltovernight,especially if there exists misunderstanding, suspicion, prejudices etc. By our lives, good exemplary lives, our genuine love, and services we must win people over. No one should be able to find fault with us. Our life shouldbesoexemplarythatpeople will admire us and be attracted towards us and will want to be in friendlytermswithus.

FundamentalistsandPoliticiansmay try to divide the society, but we must try to unite all. They may spread hatred and violence, but we will spread love and peace. They may build walls that divide us, but we will build bridges that connect us. They may destroy communal peace and harmony; we will build peace and harmony through interreligiousdialogue.

During the FABC General Conference, which was held in October 2022 in Thailand, and in which I was privileged to take part

as a Delegate and Resource Person from India, the Church’s role as a Peace Builder or as Agent of Peace was much emphasized as most of the Asian countries are facing extremism and fundamentalism. Churchshouldfunctionasacatalyst inbuildingpeaceandreconciliation.

I invite SCC Coordinators and Animatorstotaketheinitiativeafter having learnt the situations in the neighbourhood as to how to go about forming Small Human Communities (SHCs) which will include all people in the neighbourhood, not just Catholics andChristiansbutHindus,Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis even Atheists. Nooneistobeexcluded.

In keeping with the Synod Working Document, “Enlarge the space of your tent” (Is. 54:2) make the community more inclusive, leaving no one out from the neighbourhood community. May it betrulyHumanCommunity.

Importance of Inter-religious Dialogue:

Inter-religiousDialogueplaysavery important role in our multireligious, multi-lingual, multicultural country, and particularly in the present circumstances. This dialogue is not restricted to only ReligiousLeadersorIntellectualson ahigherlevelbutmustincludeallat the grassroot level. It involves dialogueoflifeandactionwhenwe share our daily lives together daily, on special occasions and very particularly in times of need, tragedies, sickness, and death. The timesof tragedy,calamity, sickness,

and death are special and crucial moments when we can reach out and touch the lives of others. We must not lose these opportunities. Once we are in good relationship withallourneighboursitwillnotbe difficult to form Small Human Communities in our neighbourhood.

SCCs may not be fully suitable to hold SHC meetings but much of it can be adapted. We must devise some new method to come together and hold meetings. The Diocesan Social Work Societies and Commission for Inter-religious Dialogue may be able to help us in this regard. That will emerge

gradually, once our initial groundworkisdone.

is their happiness; their protest; their views on life, among other things,” Mr Rodrigues added. He called upon Konkani enthusiasts to take keen interest in marriage literature reach. He also said that vovio form of Konkani marriage literature had over one thousand rare Konkani words which need to be published as a separate Konkani dictionary.

Political Opportunism!

‘Opportunism’ is normally defined as “the practiceofusingsituations unfairly to get anadvantagefor yourselfwithoutthinkingaboutthe consequences,ofhowyouractions will affect other people”. At a different and far serious level is ‘political opportunism’ which is basedonthepoliticalphilosophyof Niccolò Machiavelli, as described inThe Princeand which is often regarded as a classic manual of opportunist scheming; aMachiavellianis nowadays ‘a cunning, immoral, and opportunist person ’ ; today, several of our politicians very easily fit the bill.

Political opportunism therefore refers ‘ totheattempttomaintain political support, or to increase politicalinfluence,possiblyinaway whichdisregardsrelevantethicalor

politicalprinciples.At the top, are thosewhohavemasteredtheartof politicalchicanery-andweallknow who!!

So, when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the SacredHeartCathedralinDelhion9 April 2023, Easter Sunday, it raised several eyebrows and more! Not thatitwasuniqueinanyway.Prime Ministers and Presidents of India have visited Churches and participated in Christian religious events before; besides, it is within their legitimate right to visit and even pray not only in a Church, but alsoinamosque,inagurudwaraor infire-temple!Wehavethatclassic imageofPopeFrancisprayinginthe Blue Dome Mosque in Istanbul. ThereisthefactthatoncethePrime Ministerexpresseshisdesiretovisit a Church, the Church authorities

would certainly do everything within their means, with the ceremonyandprotocol.toaccorda welcome befitting of the office of thePrimeMinister,

The reality in India, however, is different today. Given the constant attacks on the miniscule Christian population today, no one is willing to accept (except for the gullible, thenaiveandthe ‘bhakts ‘) thatthe visit of the Prime to the Cathedral was but one of sheer ‘political opportunism’. The attacks on Christians in India today (and on other minorities, particularly the Muslims)takeplacewithfrightening regularity.Thesearenotaberrations or isolated instances, as even some of the Christian prelates have the spinelessness to make them out to be. Christians in several BJP - ruled states are hounded and harassed; prayerservicesaredisrupted;places of prayer and worship are demolished; false cases are foisted on pastors and Christian worshippers. The votaries of the Sangh Parivar spew hate and instigate violence on the Christians. Then we have the draconian and unconstitutional anti -conversion

lawsthathavebeenpromulgatedin several states that denies one the Fundamental right to legitimately preach, practise and propagate one’s religion. The Constitutional provisionsofrightstominoritiesare downscaled and are even being scrapped altogether. There is substantial documentation to evidenceallofthis.

It is important to note that those who indulge in the attacks against Christians, do so, because they know that nothing will happen to them! They have all the protection and immunity they need from their political bosses. They attack with impunity because they know they have the immunity! FIRs are not registered against these goons as wesawintheblatantintimidationof a couple of Catholic schools in Gujarat a few weeks ago. Many Christiansare certainlynotreadyto accept second - class citizenship in a country which belongs to them and are fighting for their Constitutional rights. There was a massiveprotestinDelhiagainstthe persecution of Christians in midFebruary and one in Bombay as recentlyas12April!

ThePrimeMinisterisintheknowof all this! If he has any genuine concern for the Christian citizens of the country he should first openly anddirectlystophisregimesandilk for all the irreparable harm that is being done not only to the Christians,buttotheConstitutionof the country, and particularly to its pluralistic fabric. He should be publicly stating, repeatedly, that no one would be spared for demonizing, denigrating, discriminating against the minoritiesparticularlytheChristians and Muslims; and ensure appropriateactiononthem!

he would abide by the Constitution and would protect their Constitutional rights and freedoms at whatever the cost? There is absolutely no record in the print or electronic media of what the Prime Minister said - just visuals: photoops for all! The fact is that the elections in Karnataka and Kerala are due shortly and that General elections willtake place in2024 - is notlostonconcernedcitizensofthe country and particularly on discerningpoliticalanalysts.

Visiting a Church, lighting a candle before the statue of the Risen Lord, listening to an English hymn are all good, if done in the right spirit and attitude. Otherwise, they are mere ‘theatrics and this Prime Minister, the world knows, is high on drama. Whatdidhesaywhenhevisitedthe Cathedral? Did he assure the bishopsandtheotherspresent,that

Itisalsointerestingtoseewhatthe bishops who welcomed the Prime Minister had to say to him. Were there only pleasantries and small talk (and some ‘prayers’) exchanged? Could not the bishops have made it an occasion to highlightandinwriting,theabysmal depths the country has fallen to in every sphere - and particularly the lot of the poor and the marginalised,thesmallfarmersand the migrant workers, the excluded andtheexploited?Shouldtheyhave notmadeastrongstatementonthe plight of the Christians (and the Muslims) in India? Here was certainly a golden opportunity

which was badly missed; a real opportunity which cannot be compared with the political opportunismofthePrimeMinister!

Interestingly it is good to be reminded that Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi who was the main prelate to welcome the Prime Minister to the Cathedral, wrote a lettertohisdioceseon8May2018. At that time the country was burning with several issues as it is today. The modified media instead of taking on the Government on its lack of governance took on the archbishopandmadehisinnocuous letterprime time news. In his letter. ArchbishopCoutorequestedspecial prayers until the General Elections of 2019. The letter was a call for prayer beginning on “May13,2018 whichmarkstheAnniversaryofthe ApparitionoftheBlessedMotherat Fatima,consecratingourselvesand our nation to the Immaculate Heart”.At that time most thinking citizens had the following conclusionstomake:

- As an Indian citizen, the archbishop has every right to voicehisopinions/views.

- AstheArchbishopofDelhi,itis his duty to be a Pastor and instructtheCatholicsunderhis care both on spiritual and temporalmatters.

- It is an age-old practice for Bishops all over the world to send out Circular or Pastoral Lettersbeforeanymajorevent (including elections) which couldaffecttheirpeopleinany way!

- The letter clearly does NOT take sides; does not name any political party; does not tell peoplewhomtovotefor

- The letter is addressed to a particular group of people (that is the Catholics of Delhi) it is directional in nature; a request and certainly not mandatory.

- The letter is a call to prayer! (Anythingwrongwiththat?)

Archbishop Anil begins his letter

withthewords“Wearewitnessinga turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democraticprinciplesenshrinedin our Constitution and the secular fabricofournation.” There could not be perhaps a better opening statement, so down-to-earth, so contextual- which sets the tone of whyoneneedstoprayandfast.Can one deny the fact that what we witness in India is not ‘a turbulent political atmosphere’? When a ‘few’ decide what one should eat and wear; see and write; or whom to worship; when the very core of the country’s secular and pluralistic fabricstandstobedestroyed;when allthatis sacred inthe Constitution isbeingeroded – howcanoneever abstain from making such a statement?Itisasinnottodoso.

It would be appropriate at this juncturethatArchbishopAnilandin fact all the Bishops of India should write another relevant pastoral letter (in the lines of Pope Francis) and in the context of the realities which today have gripped the nation.CantheChurchtakeavisible and vocal stand on the brutal murder of Atique Ahmed and

several others in encounters by the State of Uttar Pradesh? Should we not speak out about the thousands of Christian and Muslim names missing from the Electoral rolls in Karnataka?Whatisthestandofthe Church on corruption – and on the way the likes of Adani have looted thenation?Canwedareaccompany the likes of Bilkis Bano in her relentlessstruggleforjustice?Many issues and many more unanswered questions!

The valedictory programme commenced being grateful to the Almighty for the opportunities provided.

craft, cooking without fire, outdoor games, clay modelling, mini mela, kite flying to watching a movie which the camp provided, the

exuberant campers zealously participated and showcased their creativity.Thus,achievingthemotto of the camp ‘Involve and enrich’. Thecampwasearnestlyappreciated andapplaudedbythe campersand their parents. A few were happy to articulate their experiences of the camp during the valedictory programme.

The finale was an amalgamation of action song, yoga, zumba and drama followed by receiving the participation certificate. The

auditorium was in a hustle and bustle as the camper’s bid bye-bye to the 2023 camp. The chief guest our own teacher Neetha, also the camp co-ordinator was heartily welcomed along with the administrator Sr Carissima. team members that his name is Hasain,andhebelongstoHiriyurof Bangalore.The searchforhisnative details continued and the team came to know that he belongs to Hiriyurof Chitradurga District. After contacting his sister and other

familymemberstheyweresurprised and happy to know about his living atSnehalaya. Immediately they traveled to Manjeshwar and reached

organized by the Stark County HumanTraffickingCoalition.

Dancy shared the analog ‘Frog in a Well’, of how victims of human trafficking become trapped in the hands of the perpetrators, not knowing there is a bigger, better, and brighter world outside the ‘Well’.

Harold D’Souza spoke on the problems, solutions, and resources onlabortrafficking.

Very Rev. Msgr Maxim L. Noronha, Vicar General offered the

thanksgivingEucharistMass.Rev.Fr Rupesh Tauro, Assistant Director of the Institute preached the homily.

Fr Larry Pinto placed on record a brief report of the activities and listed out a few requirements and needs of the ashram and its residents.
