Chicken Roce (Coconut Milk) curry Ingredients: १) १kg fresh chicken, cut into medium pieces २) १ cup thick coconut milk ३) २ cups thin coconut milk ४) २ tbsp grated coconut ५) ३ medium onions chopped lengthwise ६) २ pcs garlic ७) ५ kashmiri chillies ८) २ tbsp coriander seeds ९) १ tsp cumin seeds १०) १ tsp mustard seeds ११) १ tsp pepper corns १२) २ cloves १३) १/२ inch cinnamon stick

१४) १/४ tsp turmeric powder १५) १ tbsp tamarind pulp १६) १ sprig curry leaves १७) salt as per taste १८) २ tbsp oil Recipe: - Wash chicken nicely and keep aside to drain water - Heat up a pan add १ tsp oil and fry red chillies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, pepper corns, cloves and cinnamon stick for २ mins on medium flame - In the same pan slightly fry one onion and garlic - In the same pan, fry for a while २ tbsp grated coconut with १/४ tsp turmeric powder 42 वीज क क ों णि


- In a mixer grinder, make a fine paste of all roasted ingredients, fried onions and coconut by adding thin coconut juice - In a kadai, heat २ tbsp oil - Add one onion and fry till golden brown. - Add curry leaves and fry for a while - Add chicken and fry for ५ mins on high flame till chicken turns golden colour - Add tamarind pulp and salt and stir well - Reduce the flame to medium, cover the lid, add some thin coconut milk and cook chicken until done. - Once chicken is almost cooked, add potato pieces and mix well and cook for few minutes - Add masala paste and mix well. Add thin juice if left or hot water as per the consistency of curry and cook until full boil on medium flame - Once curry is fully boiled, add thick juice and reduce the flame to very low and cook for another ५ mins or until full boil again.

“I am the Resurrection and the Life” An Easter Message can share in his resurrection and new life. St. Paul, writing to Timothy, assures him,् “Here् is् a् saying् that् you can rely on: If we have died with him,्we्shall्also्live्with्him”्(2 Tim.2:11).

Easter celebrates the most central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the most important feast in the Christian calendar, celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It is the feast which joyfully celebrates the triumph of Christ over sin, satan and death. The joyful good news in the event of Christ’s् resurrection् is् not् merely् that he has risen from the dead, but more importantly for us, that we too

Jesus Christ made some tall claims: “I् am् the् light् of् the् world.् Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life”् (John् 8:12).् “I् am् the् resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet shall्he्live”्(John्11:25)्and्“I्am् the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through्me”्(John्14:6).्He्told्the् Jews who questioned his authority and् asked् for् a् sign:् “Destroy् this् temple, and in three days I will raise it् up”् (John् 2:19).् He् was् in् fact् referring to his body. These were not empty claims. Jesus truly rose from the dead on the third day as he had foretold.

If Christ had not risen from the dead, our faith would be useless. But Christ has indeed risen as he said. The Apostles are witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus, on whose strong faith and testimony the Church’s्faith्and्our्faith्are्built् (cf. 1 Cor. 15:1-20). Easter is a feast of hope and joy. Easter gives us hope when everything appears to be hopeless. It gives us joy in the midst of sorrow. It gives us strength to pick up the pieces and start all over again. It assures us that God is able to turn our failures into success. It uplifts us when dejected and disappointed. Easter् is् God’s् powerful् way् of् telling humanity that ultimately, He is in control and that sin, satan and death have no power over Him. During the pandemic which still continues to raise its ugly head, with spike in numbers and new strains of the virus appearing, Easter brings new hope and comfort. In my Easter message last year, I had expressed my faith and conviction that the crown of thorns of Jesus would

surely destroy the Corona (crown) virus. The discovery and production of vaccines by several Pharmaceutical companies, in less than a year, and the vaccination drive going on in full swing, are certainly्signs्of्God’s्intervention् to save humanity from this deadly virus. It is a sign् of् God’s् and् humanity’s् victory् over् the् virus.् Certainly, it will take a long time till all are vaccinated. But it will certainly contain the spread of virus and will bring normalcy back again. We can live in hope, joy, and peace – true Easter gifts. I encourage all of you to get vaccinated against Corona virus and thus help fight this deadly virus. The Risen Lord appeared several times to his disciples. Each time he appeared, he greeted them with the words:् “Peace be with you”.् Jesus् is the Prince of peace. At his birth, the angels had announced peace to all people of good will. It is only a person of good will, the one who is open to receive divine grace who will experience inner peace that Christ gives. If there is lack of peace, unrest, violence, and war in the world, it is because people have not

The Power of the Crucified Jesus As a Jesuit and moreover as a priest I have certain mysterious experiences which are somewhat riddles for me. One of them is the power of the cross. On Good Friday in Catholic churches there is the veneration of the cross. When the crucifix is kept for veneration, I have seen Catholics who either never or hardly go to church and who are labelled् as् “prostitutes”,् “concubines’,् “drunkards”,् “drug् addicts”,् “thieves”,् “scoundrels”,् “thugs”,् ‘murderers”,् “bad् character”,् “mad् persons”,् etc.् faithfully come to church and either they kneel or bend to kiss the crucifix!!! Good Friday is not a day of

obligation and yet they never miss this one day to come to church. I really wonder what draws them to the church on Good Friday. The only plausible explanation I could give is they know they are great sinners and yet convinced that the crucified Jesus who died for them and others

will forgive them, even when others are not ready to pardon. Late Khushwant Singh was the editor्of्“The्Illustrated्Weekly्of् India”.् In् the years 1975 -77 (I do not remember the exact date, month, and year) on the occasion of

Good Friday, he wrote an article. I do not remember the exact title. In it he wrote on forgiveness, which I paraphrase: if you want to know the meaning of forgiveness look at the crucified Jesus, only he who forgave his enemies from the cross has the right to speak about forgiveness. Khushwant Singh was a selfproclaimed agnostic. He was inclined towards atheism. Such a

person truly believed in the power of forgiveness of Jesus. Sounds ridiculous but it is true. While doing philosophy and theology at Pune I came to know that्Christian्“prostitutes”्not्only् come to the church on Good Friday to kiss the crucifix but that day they do not entertain even a single customer!!! They observe that day as Holy with fasting and prayer. Due to various circumstances people become victims and prisoners of vices. I have come to the conclusion, “When्the्crucified्Jesus्draws्the् “sinners”् to् himself् and् forgives् them, who am I to accuse or condemn् them?”् From् the् first् “Good्Friday”,्till्date्the्power्of् forgiveness flows from the cross. Holy Saturday (Latin: Sabbatum Sanctum), also known as the Great and Holy Saturday ,the Great Sabbath, Hallelujah Saturday (in Portugal and Brazil), Saturday of the Gloria and Black Saturday (in the Philippines) or Easter Eve, and called "Joyous Saturday" or "the Saturday of Light" among the Coptic Christians, is the Saturday of Holy Week, the day after Good Friday. It is the day before the Feast of Easter and the last day of the Holy Week in which Christians prepare for Easter. Holy Saturday, also called Easter Vigil, Christian religious observance that ends the Lenten season. The observance commemorates the final् day् of् Jesus’् death, which is traditionally associated with his triumphant descent into Sheol (the place of dead). This year Holy Saturday is celebrated on Saturday, April 03, 2021. Holy Saturday is the day in the Christian liturgical calendar that celebrates the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death and burial on Good Friday and before his

resurrection on Easter Sunday. Holy Saturday is the last day of Lent and of the Holy Week, and the third day of the Easter Triduum, the three high holidays before Easter, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Holy Saturday is always the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The date of Easter is set by the Ecclesiastical Tables, constructed at the Ecumenical Council of Nicea (325 CE) as the first Sunday that follows the first full moon after the spring equinox (with some adjustment for the Gregorian calendar). The History of Celebrating Holy Saturday: In the Roman Catholic Church, the altar remains stripped completely bare (following the Mass on Maundy Thursday). The celebration of the Sacraments is extremely limited: Holu communion is given only as Viaticum to the dying; while penance, anointing of the sick and

baptism may be administered because they, like Viaticum, are helpful to ensuring salvation for the dying. In the second century AD, people kept an absolute fast for the entire 40-hour period between nightfall on Good Friday (recollecting the time Christ was removed from the cross and buried in the tomb) and dawn on Easter Sunday (when Christ was resurrected). By Constantine's realm in the fourth century AD, the night of the vigil of Easter began Saturday at dusk, with the lighting of the "new fire," including a large number of lamps and candles and the paschal candle. The paschal candle is very large, made of beeswax and fixed in a great candlestick created for that purpose; it is still a significant part of Holy Saturday services. The history of fasting on Holy Saturday has varied over the centuries. As the Catholic Encyclopaedia notes, "in the early Church, this was the only Saturday on which fasting was permitted."

Fasting is a sign of penance, but on Good Friday, Christ paid with his own blood the debt of his followers' sins, and people, therefore, had nothing to repent. Thus, for many centuries, Christians regarded both Saturday and Sunday as days on which fasting was forbidden. That practice is still reflected in the Lenten disciplines of the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, which lighten their fasts slightly on Saturdays and Sundays. Easter Vigil Mass In the early church, Christians gathered on the afternoon of Holy Saturday to pray and to confer the Sacrament of Baptism on catechumens—converts to Christianity who had spent Lent preparing to be received into the Church. As the Catholic Encyclopaedia notes, in the early Church, "Holy Saturday and the vigil of Pentecost were the only days on which baptism was administered." This vigil lasted through the night until dawn on Easter Sunday, when the Alleluia was sung for the first time since the beginning of Lent,

The whole of Holy Saturday, originally a day of mourning for the crucified Christ and of expectation of His Resurrection, now became little more than an anticipation of the Easter Vigil. 20th Century Reforms: With the reform of the liturgies for Holy Week in 1956, those ceremonies were returned to the Easter Vigil itself, that is, to the Mass celebrated after sundown on Holy Saturday, and thus the original character of Holy Saturday was restored.

Until the revision of the rules for fasting and abstinence in 1969, strict fasting and abstinence continued to be practiced on the morning of Holy Saturday, thus reminding the faithful of the sorrowful nature of the day and preparing them for the joy of Easter feast. While fasting and abstinence are no longer required on Holy Saturday morning, practicing these Lenten disciplines is still a good way to observe this sacred day. As on Good Friday, the modern church offers no Mass for Holy Saturday. The Easter Vigil Mass, which takes place after sundown on Holy Saturday, properly belongs to Easter Sunday, since liturgically, each day begins at sundown on the previous day. That is why Saturday vigil Masses can fulfil parishioners' Sunday obligation. The modern Easter Vigil Mass often begins outside of the church near a charcoal brazier, representing the first vigil. Why is Good Friday called Good Friday? Probably because good used to mean holy. Good Friday" comes from the obsolete sense "pious, holy" of the word "good". A common folk etymology incorrectly analyzes "Good Friday" as a corruption of "God Friday". In Old English, the day was called "Long Friday" (langa frigedæg), and this term was adopted from Old English and is still used in Scandinavian languages and Finnish. The Last Supper was a Passover Seder, the feast of unleavened bread. Jesus and the disciples are eating unleavened bread. Passover is the Jewish festival commemorating the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, when they left so quickly there was no time for the bread to rise. Maundy Thursday is also associated with foot-washing. Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, an act described in the Gospel of John, chapter 13, as Jesus teaching them to be servants. It is the ultimate act of "servant leadership." Jesus instructs his followers to love and to serve. Catholic churches will have a Mass in the evening, with a

Maundy Thursday initiates the Easter Tridum, the period which commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection; this period includes Good Friday and Holy Saturday and ends on the evening of Easter. The् Mass् of् the् Lord’s् Supper् or् service of worship is normally celebrated in the evening, when Friday begins according to Jewish tradition, as the Last Supper was held on the feast Passover, according to the three Synoptic gospels. In the early Christian church, the day was celebrated with a general communion of clergy and people. At a special mass, the bishop consecrated the chrism (holy oils) in preparation for the anointing of the neophytes at the baptism on Easter night. Now the Catholic church has Chrism mass before the Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday evening liturgy is the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist, with a general communion. During the evening liturgy the hosts are consecrated for the communion on Good Friday (when there is no liturgy), and the ceremony of the washing of feet is performed by the celebrant, who ceremonially washes the feet of 12 people in memory of Christ’s् washing् the् feet् of् his् disciples. Eastern Orthodox churches also have a ceremony of foot washing and blessing of oil on this day. In England alms are distributed to the poor by the British sovereign in a ceremony held at a different church each year. Appeal for Immediate Bail to 84-year-Old Stan Swamy We, the undersigned, are shocked by the rejection of a bail application filed by Stan Swamy in the Bhima Koregaon case by the special NIA (National Investigation Agency) court on 22 March 2021. He was

arrested on 8 October 2020 and continues to languish in jail. Eighty-four-year-old Stan Swamy is a् Parkinson’s् disease् patient् with् severe tremors in both hands. He has trouble drinking from a glass,

taking bath, and washing clothes on his own. He has other health ailments as well. Before his arrest, he used to spend most of his time at Bagaicha, Ranchi. Despite being repeatedly harassed (first by Maharashtra police and then the NIA) since 2018 in this case, he stayed in Bagaicha and cooperated fully with the investigation.

It is ironic that while public support for Stan Swamy continues to grow, the court rejected the bail application् in् the् “community’s् interest”.् Adivasis,् Gram Sabhas, civil society, several political leaders and् parties,् and् Jharkhand’s् Chief् Minister himself have condemned Stan’s्arrest्and्expressed्support् and solidarity with him.

Rejection of the bail of an elderly and ailing person, with limited mobility and no history of violence against others, is beyond comprehension.

We know Stan as an exceptionally gentle, honest, and selfless person. We have the highest regard for him and his work. He has spent decades in Jharkhand working for the rights of the Adivasis and underprivileged.

The recent Arsenal report, prepared on the basis of electronic evidence collected by the NIA, has exposed how fake documents were planted into the computers of the accused in the Bhima Koregaon case. Stan himself clearly told the NIA that some so-called extracts allegedly taken from his computer were fabricated and that he disowned them. It is disturbing that the court decided to ignore this evidence of fabrication as it rejected the bail application. Stan Swamy is a symbol of the plight of thousands of undertrial prisoners who languish in jail for years under fabricated UAPA charges, often aimed at harassing those who stand up for the underprivileged or

On 22 March, Sessions Judge Dinesh E. Kothalikar of the Special NIA Court, denied Fr Stan Swamy bail. In the detailed court order of 34-pages Justice Kothalikar says that based on the ‘material available on record’, Fr Stan seemed to be a member of a banned Maoist organisation. "Prima facie it can be gathered that the applicant along with other members of the banned organisation hatched a serious conspiracy to create unrest in the entire country and to overpower the Government, politically and by using muscle power," Adding, "The material placed on record thus prima facie denote that the applicant was not only a member of banned organisation CPI (Maoist) but he was carrying out activities further in the objective of the organisation which is nothing but to overthrow the democracy of the

nation," The ‘material’ that the court referred to included around "140 emails between the applicant (Swamy) and his co-accused," the fact that Swamy and others he communicated with, were referred to as "comrades", and that Swamy had received Rs eight lakh from one comrade, Mohan, allegedly for the furtherance of Maoist activities. When Swamy’s lawyers challenged the so-called material evidence the Judge said that raising questions on the authenticity of the evidence in the case would amount to interference with the court proceedings. “It is well known that the present proceeding is sub judice. Therefore, making any comments as to the evidence to be placed before the Court would amount to interference in the administration of justice. In fact, such action is required to be deprecated" In the arguments earlier the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had opposed Swamy's bail plea saying probe had revealed that Swamy was a staunch supporter of organisations such as ‘Vistapan

Virodhi Jan Vikas Andolan' and 'People's Union for Civil Liberties', which according to the NIA were working as "fronts of the CPI (Maoist)”. Swamy’s lawyer Sharif Shaikh had argued that the NIA had failed to establish Swamy's connection to the Elgar ParishadMaoists links case. Fr Stan did not participate in that particular Elgar Parishad and has never visited Bhima-Koregaon all his life Fr. Stan, was arrested from his residence in Ranchi on 8 October 2020, for ‘apparently’ being part of the Bhima- Koregaon conspiracy case. The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches delivered at the 'Elgar Parishad' conclave held at Shaniwarwada in Pune on 31 December, 2017, in which police suspect triggered violence the next day near the KoregaonBhima war memorial located on the outskirts of the city. The police had claimed that the Parishad was backed by outlawed Maoist groups; till today nothing has been proved on that count. Fr Stan strongly denies all the fabricated charges made on him. The main suspects named originally for causing the violence, belonged to the Sangh Parivar. Several months

later human rights defenders were arrested for their ‘alleged’ involvement in the violence. Fr Stan was the sixteenth and last person to be arrested – also making him the oldest person who is incarcerated under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the country till date. All the ones arrested are wellknown for their unstinted commitment to human rights of the poor, the marginalised and the excluded; some of them are highly -rated academics and intellectuals who have contributed significantly to the cause of the Dalits and Adivasis of the country. Fr. Stan’s Swamy’s advocate had argued that the practice of taking hash values of electronic records was not followed by the investigation officer, making them open to fabrication. He had also told the court that the typed letters suffer many legal shortcomings and that the prosecution cannot connect them with the accused based on short names or alphabets used to denote sender and receiver. Early in February, Arsenal Consulting, a US-based digital forensics firm, released a damning report which posed serious

questions about the credibility of the letters that were allegedly found in the computer and other gadgets of Rona Wilson, prisoners’ rights activist, who like Fr Stan , is in jail after being arrested in the Bhima-Koregaon conspiracy case The report said that a cyber attacker had gained access to Wilson’s computer at least twenty-two months before his arrest and at least ten incriminating letters were placed on it through this attack. While Arsenal Consulting has not attributed the attack to any particular entity, in its report they have stated that the attacker responsible for compromising Rona’s laptop had extensive resources including time and it is obvious that their primary goals were surveillance and incriminating document delivery. Fr Stan too was interrogated over a period of time. During the raids conducted at his residence in Ranchi, the NIA was unable to find anything incriminating against him. His computer was taken away. In today’s world almost any so-called “incriminating” evidence can easily be planted on anyone’s

computer or other electronic gadgets. The judge however, refused to take into account the Arsenal report of alleged tampering with the computer of Rona Wilson, a co-accused of Fr Stan. Stan’s lawyers also asserted that 83-year-old, besides his advanced age, suffers from Parkinson's disease and he has lost the ability to hear; and suffers from other physical ailments. On his age and health condition, the judge cited previous Supreme Court judgements to hold that given the seriousness of the allegations made against Swamy, the "collective interest of the community would outweigh Swamy's right to personal liberty and as such the old age and or alleged sickness of the applicant would not go in his favour.” The Judge was too afraid to cite the Supreme Court’s judgement on Arnab Goswami, (the blue-eyed boy of the ruling regime)- which ruled in favour of an individual’s personal liberty! The judge also disregarded the fact that Fr. Stan was not a flight risk and would not jump bail. In his

plea Fr Stan said that his name was not even part of the original FIR but was added in the remand application in 2018 by the police as a ‘suspected accused’. The court, however, held the fact that though Fr Stan had not been named in the initial FIR, did not entitle him to any relief. Judge Kothalikar, in a highly questionable order, accepted the prosecution's submissions saying they had "substance". He said, "upon cumulative consideration of all the aforesaid circumstances as well as the law on the subject, I conclude that the applicant has failed to make out a case for grant of bail;" adding, “there are reasonable grounds for believing that the accusation of commission of the offences punishable under chapters IV (punishment for terrorist activities) and VI (terrorist organisations) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against the applicant is prima facie true. Considering the express bar imposed by Section 43D 5 (no person accused with chapters IV and VI shall be released on bail) of the UAPA, the applicant cannot be released on bail.” Eminent citizens, from all

over have protested this deplorable judgement; several thousands have also signed an online petition condemning the judgement. Just before the order denying him bail, in a communication from jail, Stan said, “Dear one and all, Pardon me for clubbing all of you together as I have one and the same message to give to you soon. Practically everyone writing to me expresses the wish that I be released from prison ‘at the earliest/ immediately/without any further delay ‘or some such wish. Apart from the fact that the wheels of justice turn very slow, all 16 of us are implicated in serious cases such as sedition and UAPA, where it is very difficult to get bail. Still our lawyers are trying their very best. So, we await ‘the ides of March’ Whereas arrests under sedition are increasing, conviction is just 3 percent. As for UAPA, 5,922 arrests were made during 2016 - 2019, and only 132 were convicted (source TOI 11-02 2021). Our prisons are bursting at the seams. Consequently, we have a scenario of deprivation of even the basic amenities to prisoners. So much for now. Ever in solidarity

All his life he has been labouring for and accompanying the Adivasis and other excluded groups in their quest for justice, equity and dignity. He has always worked within the Constitutional and democratic framework of the country. That anyone could even think that he was trying to “overthrow the democracy of the nation” is not merely outlandish but a sheer travesty of justice. The truth is, the way democracy is being dismantled in the country today by the fascists, is there for everyone to see. The learned judged (who will certainly be given some promotion!) will have neither the honesty or the courage to look into the obvious. In a strongly- worded statement (dated 31 March 2021), in solidarity with Fr Stan, from the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES)of the Society of Jesus, the Secretary Fr Xavier Jeyaraj, voicing the sentiments of Jesuits and many others across the

Parish and Derebail Parishioners took part in the Way of the Cross. Derebail on Sunday, the 28th of March, 2021 at 5PM at the Holy Family School Grounds. During the Way of the Cross, statue of Jesus carrying the Cross along with statue of Mother Mary were carried by the youth of Derebail parish from the 1st to the 14th station. Rev Fr Austin Peter Peres - Parish Priest of Derebail Parish, Rev Fr Gerald Francis Pinto Residential Priest, Rev Fr Gratian Alvares - Parish Priest of Kupepadav and former residential priest of Derebail

Rev Fr Gratian Alvares then read the Word of God from Mathew 27:27-31, after which he gave a brief reflection of the same. During the reflection Fr Gratian spoke on 'Individual Suffering' and gave two examples related to it. He also explained the reasons why Jesus Christ suffered and died on the Cross.
