MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:

jebarsanti72@gmail.com be a Theme Basket auction so let’s get those baskets together. As always, we will honor those who have passed away during the lions’ year and will also honor those who have made significant contributions to lionism.

The next major event in the Lions year is almost here! MD-1 CONVENTION! For the first time in two years, we will meet in person to celebrate our successes during the year. Our international guest is 2nd International Vice President, Lion Patti Hill of Canada, a great lion, and future International President. We will all get an opportunity to meet her during the convention. The convention committee, chaired by Lion Terri Pasternak, has a number of fun activities planned as well as great meals at the lunch and banquet. There WILL

Our governors have worked hard to serve their districts this year and this is an opportunity for us to show our appreciation and support for what they have done. As for myself, I look forward to seeing all of you. Though I only see some of you once a year, at the convention, you are my friends and I have missed seeing you. There will be lots of other activities during the weekend, including the Council of Governors meeting, so come out and join us for lions fun. LEADERSHIP By Lion Larry McGuire

No, I was not abducted by some alien form another planet. Nor was I captured by wild wolves and made a part of the pack. So, why did I miss the last issue? I really do not know what to blame it on. Perhaps my brain was baked in the hot Texas sun. Lion Ann and I winter in the deep, south part of Texas. Do we attend Lions Club meetings while in Texas? The answer is a simple, no. Why? The first club I visited has since folded. The second club we visited; we were treated so shabbily

that we never returned. Quite truthfully, it soured us on visiting clubs. Let me explain. Upon entering the club room, we were immediately and harshly told our meal was not free. We did not expect it to be. Then the club president spent the entire meeting talking about obtaining a concealed weapons permit. We never learned the club’s projects or fundraisers. We were never recognized by any club member as we were told to sit in the back. So, we do not attend that club’s meeting. A club in Edinburgh, Texas graciously asked us to attend their meeting. But Edinburg is more than an hour’s drive away. I have emailed closer club presidents and asked if we could attend as visitors, but there was never a response. So, what does this have to do with leadership? Everything! First, if you are going to advertise your club in the paper and list a phone number or email address for potential members, check it for messages and respond. Second, if you have a guest attend

3 The Illinois Lion & Leo

your club be polite when telling your guests they are expected to pay for their meal. Third, recognize your guests and allow them a few minutes to tell something about themselves. Even though they are not you club’s member; make them feel as though they are. Do this because they are, in essence, a member of your club, Lions Clubs International. And you, as club president, need to make sure you have someone at the entry welcoming

all who enter, even your regular members. You, and all club members, should show some leadership ability by welcoming guests and make them feel at home. The club that treated us so badly lost potential helpers at their club functions. I know, because we wanted to get involved. So, be a leader. After all, your club must have faith in you; they elected you to lead them into the future. . . Where no Lion has gone before. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Campaign 100: We Keep Getting Closer, Let’s Add a Legacy of Love

Congratulations! See How Much Your Donations Helped Our habit in this space is to talk about the money we have to raise or have raised. This time let’s

look at what we have done over the past two Lions years. Up until February of 2022, the Lions of Illinois have through Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service accomplished the equivalent of the following: ***given 840 people access to clean water

4 The Illinois Lion & Leo

***provided 120 cataract surgeries ***put Quest in 60 classrooms for an entire year ***reached out and given a helping hand to 240 victims of a natural disaster ***given 6,000 measles vaccinations ***screened 1,080 at risk diabetic people ***480 young cancer patients equipment was purchased ***access to 840 chronically hungry people All of that through Lions Clubs International Foundation, while facing the added challenges of the past two years. For those accomplishments the Illinois Lions should be very proud. The goal at the start of the Campaign 100 was two billion more people served. We can do it. We have come this far, a little more effort will do the job. Pat yourself on the back for all that you have done, and let’s make a huge effort on the final stretch. Thank you for caring. Simply get in touch with lionsclubs.org/en/donate. You can also TEXT LCIF 243-725. Or contacting your district
