MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:

By the time you read this Thanksgiving will have passed and you will all be preparing for Christmas. I hope you all spent some time thinking about all that you must be thankful for. I hope one of the things you were thankful for was that as lions others had something to be thankful for because of you and the things you do. From eyeglasses to thanksgiving meals, from collecting food for our food pantries to collecting toys for children at Christmas, we as lions give people in our communities reason to be thankful year-round. Personally, I can relate to our

jebarsanti72@gmail.com service. My son and his wife have taken in an Afghanistan refugee family who were fortunate to escape as they had worked with and for the US military. These people fled with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, not having time to take anything else, not even their glasses. Thanks to the San Diego California lions they were able to get new glasses and have something else to be thankful for this day. We Serve, not just a moto, but a way of life for lions throughout the world. Be proud to be a lion. Because of you, the world and our communities are a better place. Without you, many would have nowhere to go for aid. Going forward, the Council of Governors will meet on December 4th and will be collecting canned food and coats for those in need. The governors will have many items to review at the meeting to continue the progress they have made so far this year. With almost one-half the year over the governors have worked diligently

to move the State forward and I look forward to what they will accomplish the rest of the year. Finally, as the next magazine article will be available in January, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and profitable New Year. May our service be from the heart and may we serve even more in the coming year. John Barsanti Council Chair, MD-1 2021-2022 FROM MD1 GLT CHAIR:

THE FOUR BASIC LEADERSHIP STYLES What is a leader? A late friend and fellow PDG once told me that when he attended his governor elect program, an instructor told his class, “You go

back to your district. You tell them what to do. And if they do it; you are a leader.” We know that is not how leaders are made. Nor does telling someone to do something make you a leader. And that brings us to this month’s diatribe. The four recognized leadership styles in this world. Kings once used what is called the Iron Fisted Rule, better known as the autocratic ruler. Simply put, if you did not obey the king’s rules you suffered the consequences. The king cared little about your input on running the kingdom. Even in today’s world there are those people in leadership roles who practice this form of leadership. Then, sometime later, someone developed a hands-off approach to leadership. This form of leadership is called the LaissezFaire. This is where the leader let’s nature take it course. Everyone does their own thing. The leader provides either very little or no input as to what is expected. This style of management is mainly used where highly skilled professionals are

3 The Illinois Lion & Leo

involved. Here, each person knows their role and what is expected. Next is the authoritative style. Though sounding a lot like the autocratic style, it is not the same. Here the leader is very adept at what she or he does. The leader may well be an expert within his/her field and has clarity in the vision. Whereas the leader may be in control, there is a certain amount of independence allotted to those being lead. Finally, there is the democratic process. It is this style where the leader lets everyone be heard and have input in reaching the goal. But in the end, the leader makes the final decision weighing the input from others. When I review these various styles of leadership and look at Lions Clubs, I see all four styles of leadership. I have worked with governors who say, “It’s my way or the highway.” I have worked with governors who do not want to tell people what to do; “Just let’em work it out.” I have worked with leaders who have listened, valued the input, and chose not what was best for her

or him, but what was best for the club or the district. At our last Regional Lions Leadership Institute, there was an exercise where the class was divided into teams. Here the teams were to develop a new style of leadership for Lions Clubs International. There were as many styles as there were teams. But the one style that drew the most favor was a drawing with a circle of named arrows pointing toward each other and each feeding into the next named arrow. Of the four identified styles cited above, which style would this best fit? Further, when you look at these leadership skills, ask yourself, “Which one am I? And what can I do to improve my leadership role?” As the state level of governor elect and first vice governor elect training looms on the horizon, you future leaders may begin to think about the kind of a leader you will be. Whatever chosen leadership style, ask yourself, “Will I be loved? Will I be feared?” Whatever your choice or perception by others, be the very best leader you can be. -PDG Larry McGuirre

Campaign 100: We Keep Getting Closer, Let’s Add a Legacy of Love

Make Any Day A Giving LCIF Day We missed reminding you of Giving Tuesday on November 30. That, however, does not mean you cannot name another giving day. At holiday time we often think of giving and sharing. There is no better way to do that, than by supporting your Lions Clubs International Foundation. Especially as we move into the final months of Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service. The goals are reachable with a little extra push. By that we mean an extra five or ten can help. Our Multiple District 1 Chairs are striving to reach a goal of more club

participation. An individual donation from you can put your club in that column. Think about it. You can easily go online at Lions Clubs International and donate. You can text a donation…or slip a few bucks to your District Chairperson. Together as a team we can make a big difference in a world which desperately needs it. Individuals everywhere, who have been dealt a bad hand can be helped with a small effort from you. Make it your Christmas present to somebody you do not know. Simply get in touch with lionsclubs.org/en/donate. You can also TEXT LCIF 243-725. FROM MD1 COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS 2021-2022 6 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Hunger Alleviation Grants in the State of Illinois – 2020-2021 Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) has made Alleviating Hunger around the world as one of the six priorities for grant making. During the past year, LCIF has given out grants totaling $1,771,008 for hunger alleviation around the world. Most of them have been smaller District Community Grants, with 5 grants being for $100,000. Recipient countries have been China, Italy, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, the United States, a few others. As Chairman of the Hunger Alleviation campaign in District 1-J, I have had the opportunity to work with District 1-A in Illinois on this important priority of LCIF. Working with the DG of District 1-A, I could get a $100,000 grant for the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) in Cook County for installing blast chillers for the Nourish Campaign of GCFD. The Nourish Campaign will provide hot nutritious meals to 25,000 home-bound people in Cook County every day, starting in 2022.

$100,000 is District 1-H, for a cold storage facility in Galesburg, Illinois. Some districts in Illinois have applied for District Community Grants and these will be approved in the coming year. I urge all districts in Illinois to find communities needing help with Hunger Alleviation, and apply for grants for the next year, 2021-2022. If I can help in completing such grant applications, please contact me at 630 915 6176. My email is rrajaram510@gmail.com. ---------------------------------------

Lions Clubs International Foundation Convention. June

24-28, 2022 Raj Rajaram, State Chair, International Convention.

The other district in Illinois that got 7 The Illinois Lion & Leo

As many of you know by now, the venue for the 2022 convention has been changed from New Delhi, India to Montreal, Canada. The Convention registration site is available at this time (www.lcicon.lionsclubs.org). I have registered for the convention and booked a room at Hotel Montville, Montreal, Canada. I am working with DG Lori Chasse and PDG John Barsanti to publicize the convention and increase registrations from Illinois. Illinois hosts the IllinoisHawaii Lions during the convention and PDG Barsanti is working on the details. There will be about 12,000 Lions from all over the world. The International Show and Plenary sessions will be held at the Bell Center in Montreal, where the

Montreal Canadiens play their hockey games. The Palais de Congress will have the exhibit floor, booths, etc. I urge all of you to make a donation to the LCIF 100 Campaign which is trying to reach the $300 million mark in 2022. Any amount is fine and will help LCIF continue the wonderful humanitarian work around the globe. It will be a fun convention and I urge all Illinois Lions to consider attending and learning a lot about Lionism from attendees around the world. If you have any questions, please call me at 630 915 6176 or write to me at rrajaram510@gmail.com. Raj Rajaram
