Registrar’s Message Greetings!

St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Mangalore feels proud that we have successfully executed three virtual certificate programmes in Konkani language and culture for lovers of Konkani around the globe. I am sure this is an unprecedented and unique initiative. We started this initiative with a tentative and uncertain minds but the response from the Konkani enthusiasts was so overwhelming that we could complete the courses in record time. The courses were engaging, interactive and skill acquiring. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we will not be able to do much; but together, we will be achieve great things.” Likewise, Department of Konkani of St Aloysius College, the course coordinator, Ms Flora Castelino and several like-minded soldiers for Konkani along with the vibrant and enthusiastic learners of the language have conjured up a success story that has reached the global households that it is possible to hold virtual learning programmes in languages. All of you have taken the flavor of Konkani language across the world. The College feels proud and delighted at the prospect of being a catalyst in spreading Konkani and its culture to the corners of the world. I would like to congratulate all the participants of the courses and contributors to the E-Thupem, the E-Magazine of the College for collaborating with us. I would make a special mention of Sri Austin D’Souza Prabhu for his selfless service and financial contribution towards the successful completion of these virtual courses. I wish that the work of broadcasting Konkani language and culture to the ends of the world does not stop here but becomes a movement or campaign so that many more courses like these will be offered from the Konkani department and attracts large number of enrolments in the future. Let us learn Konkani, Love Konkani, Speak Konkani and encourage others too to do the same. Long live Konkani!

Dr Alwyn D’Sa Registrar St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Mangalore

Uppinakote

“ The soil of their native land is dear to all the hearts of mankind.” Marcus Tullius Cicero

I was born in Muscat, Oman and pursued my education in Mumbai and followed by in Muscat up to class 10. I have been in Uppinakote for some time and have conducted my research based on the history and significance of this place. It is saddening that people of this generation do not know much about from where they came, and it is not their fault, neither did I know about my village prior to this. Uppinakote has deep history and together with the history of its

Dear Friends, My name is Claton Borges Suares and I am going to write to you an article about my native place ‘Uppinakote’. As it is said by Marcus Tullius Cicero that the soil of their nativeland is dear to the hearts of mankind and thus we can accept the fact that wherever a person visits, she or he always carries the identity of her or his native land.

neighbouring places it makes it even more beautiful to learn. It is a small subdivision of a larger village known as the Varamballi village.

As you read through this article, you willcome across some interesting facts about the village Varamballi and specifically about its ward ‘Uppinakote’:- history, significance, it’s surrounding village, the people living there, language spoken, culture and tradition of the people and also about its neighbouring wards and the Varamballi Village.

The Varamballi village:The Varamballi village is profoundly known for its vivid history and culture. It is a huge village located along the central coastal ranges of Udupi district. Since it is located along the coastal ranges, it consists

happened in the past based on each person’s perspective and knowledge.

of several beaches such as the Malpe, Kodi, Padukere beaches etc and also rivers such as the Padukere , Suvarna and Sita rivers. The village is elegant due to the presence of its natural beauty. Varamballi extends from the Sita river(west) to Old Bus Stand(east) and Dupetkatte road(south) upto Kumragod(north). The history of Varamballi is unnotified and difficult to trace beyond a certain boundary. The subvillages that come in the Varamballi village are Gorikatte, Nairhithulu, Varambally, Belladakatte, Salikeri, Mathur, Dimbaladi, Gundabettu, Kasinahithlu, Acharbettu.

Life in Uppinakote:People living in olden days were much grounded and lived a simple life. They would wake up early in the morning and begin their day. They would go to their fields, look after their cattle and roll about with the same routine every day. They would brush their teeth with mango leaves and clean their tongue with the middle vein of the mango leaf. They would prepare breakfast, a little of which was done before they would go to sleep and wake up the next morning to do the rest. They would have their breakfast and later allow their cattle to graze in the field. Later around 10AM they would have what is called Rice-Water or Ganji between their first and second meal and have their lunch at around 12PM. Every child in the house was given some work to do. Children would work for sometime in the field in the morning, tie their cattle in the field and go to school at around 9:00AM. While they return in the evening they would bring back their cattle before dusk. Later they would prepare for dinner and make water hot naturally by lighting firing to wood for bathing as well as for drinking purposes as there was no gas stove or a water heater. They would have their family dinner and sleep in the open as there werefewer dangers for crimes to happen.

My Native Village:Living out of my native place for several years and visiting only once a year, I had a neglible idea about what I had not seen and seen but not understood in my village. I belong to Uppinakote which is a small section of the entire Varamballi village. Significance of its name ‘Uppinakote’:-history says that there used to be a king by name Butala Pandya.

The life these days has changed a lot because of modernization. The fields are reducing and more and more houses are being constructed, roads are widening. Earlier children visited the kanada medium schools, but now most of them go to english medium schools. Earlier people lived together with many people living in one house, but now days the number of people living together has reduced as urbanization (people moving from rural to urban areas) has taken place, thus many people migrate to cities and foreign countries in search of job and education. Also, cattle rearing have reduced. People are getting adapted to the modern lifestyle. Today food is rarely cooked outside naturally rather

He was involved in a trade with the gulf countries. The trade used to take place from the Hangarakatte port. Even though this port has been closed down by the government, one can still visit this ancient port and witness its essence. The port is situated in the banks of Swarna and Sita Rivers. It is said that the salt which was collected at Hangarakatte port was transferred to Uppinakote. Salt in kanada means ‘Uppu’ and ‘kote’ means village, thus the name ‘Uppinakote’ was derived from it. During this festival the people attend the Holy Mass at their respective Churches and then come home and prepare variety of dishes, serve them all on a banana leaf and sit down together to eat their meal. These are some of the traditions I have witnessed which would be more or less the same compared to those followed in other parts of the country especially the southern part of India. These two examples may seem familiar to a few readers but undisclosed to others.

gas stoves are used. This is a little information about the routine life and how urbanization has impacted the life of the people living in this society. We should not look only at the negative impacts of these changes as urbanization also has brought in some positive impacts. However the above information may vary from place to place.

Culture as the identity of the people:-

Since Uppinakote belongs to the tropical regions of India where it depends on the monsoons and is hot during summers and a drop of temperature to 20-24 degree Celsius during winters, people prefer to wear loose clothes. The clothes worn by men in earlier days were ‘white shirt’ and ‘lungi’ and the clothes worn by women was ‘sari’. These days we see less of these clothes worn by people as they have imparted the city lifestyle. Around 80% of the people speak ‘kanada’, 12% speak ‘konkani’ and 8% speak ‘urdu’. These days we find people speaking English and hindi as well.

People living in olden days were deeply rooted to their culture. As mentioned above, they lived a simple lifestyle. Their culture could be seen through the clothes that they wore, languages they spoke, celebration and events on occasions and festivals. One of the most famous traditional ceremonies include the ceremony of Rose(anointing), conducted one or two days before the marriage, celebrates the last day of virginity and involves the blessings of the parents and other elders upon the bride and the bridegroom who are anointed with ros, a mixture of coconut milk and coconut oil. This is followed by Respers(nuptials in the Church) and finally the Vordik[e] (wedding) and Voran (wedding party). During the wedding party the bride is adorned

Housing facilities:Houses are the resting place for every living creature. I had heard it often from my father and the elderly in the society explaining the condition of the houses they used to live in. The houses then were made of mud. Walls and floors were made of mud. The houses consisted of a stone pillar to hold the house high and strong. The roofs were made of bamboo sticks and upon that the long stem of paddy plants or leaves of coconut tree were put across it. The roofs were slops which helped the rainwater to slop down easily. There were specialized people who were assigned in making the roof of houses. Houses were simple and open. People slept on the veranda in front of the house. Mud houses helped to keep the inside part of the house cool. As there was no electricity, people used chimney lamps inside which kerosene was used to burn the lamps. We need to know this that even though people lived under a small roof, they lived togetherand more over they were happy. Then came the time where the thatched roofs

with a Sado(wedding sari), and Pirduk(wedding necklace). The Onpnii or Opsun divnchen is a part of the Voran during which the bride is formally given away by the father or the guardian of the bride. Monti Fest is another Christian cultural festival celebrated on 8th September every year which combines the feast of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary and the blessing of the Novem(new crops).

Palm trees such as coconut, supari, tali bonde are very common in these regions. People prefer to grow these trees since they are commercial.

Education:-

Sita River:-

The literacy rate of the people living in Uppinakote was not even 50% around 50 years back. Those days the children were made to do more of adult work and less of going to schools. As mentioned earlier, some children used to go to the fields in the morning taking the cattle and then go to schools, while they

As Marcus Tulius Cicero said “The soil of their native land is dear to all the hearts of mankind.” Where ever we go we should represent our culture. Even though our lifestyle is changing, we need to maintain the love for our culture in our hearts. I hope this article helps all of us, for some it will bring back some old memories and for others it will help them in knowing about a different place. Thankyou. l

The S.M.S. Community Hall was established in the year 2007. The St Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Cathedral Brahmavar was declared as pilgrim centre by Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II. The places mentioned in the article are those which are found in Uppinakote, Varamballi village. It is important for us to have some knowledge about our native land.

Learning My Mother Tongue, One Syllable At A Time

T

he white form was filled out every year, in my mother’s neat handwriting. Her blue ink block letters told the school administration my name, address, date of birth, parents’ names, and mother tongue.

What’s a mother tongue? What’s this language I don’t know and don’t speak? Why is a mother tongue important? These questions, at age four, seemed less important than knowing whether my birthday cake would be chocolate or vanilla. The topic was forgotten, and life went on.

Under ‘mother tongue’, my mother had filled out the letters: K-O-N-K-A-N-I.

With time, the word ‘Konkani’ acquired meaning in mother’s bedtime lullabies, the songs we sang at family reunions, the words exchanged by adults when they wanted to share information secret from us children. But Konkani as a language remained a mystery.

“What’s that?” I asked her one evening. “That’s your mother tongue,” she replied with a smile. “Ah,” I nodded, not understanding in the slightest.

Growing up in the island city of Mumbai, we studied Hindi and Marathi at school, and spoke Bombaiya (a mix of the two) in the streets. At home, we spoke English, goaded on by parents who expected us to excel at school during the day. Our lives were future-focused;

nation near South Africa, and learnt Malagasy - a Polynesian language that uses the Latin script.

the concept of “roots” abandoned by my grandparents who had left our ancestral home in Mangalore for jobs elsewhere in India. Hindi and Marathi, with rich histories of their own, were just two more items on the list of painful subjects to be endured on the way to university admission.

Back in New York City, my Chinese neighbour Wang came over each week to teach me Mandarin characters. One day, Wang announced we were having a “workshop”, and took me to a Chinese restaurant in Queens, New York. At the buffet-style meal, he taught me the words of each ingredient in Mandarin, with the characters that accompanied each morsel.

As a teenager, I moved to the United States for my higher studies. There, I took French classes with a dynamite teacher who was deeply passionate about language and its beauty. Through movies, poetry, skits and rap, Madame Mosseri brought the French language, literature, and culture to life. Learning a language was no longer a chore; it became, rather, a daily joy to be experienced through music, art, history, and the great pride the French take in their culture and civilisation.

A few years after graduation, I was offered a job in Germany, and began learning German. With its declensions and long words, German was difficult, and half the time, I invented the tenses. I persisted, and within two years, I could speak fluently with colleagues and friends. My cousins began calling me the ‘family polyglot’, and my boyfriend bragged to his friends about my language skills. Yet despite the 10 ways of expressing my feelings, I still hadn’t mastered my mother tongue - Konkani.

Living in the US also meant being surrounded by immigrants from Latin America who spoke Spanish with each other and English only under duress. I met, too, the children of immigrants, who had grown up speaking English, like my college roommate Alita, whose parents were from Guadalajara, Mexico. Like me, Alita’s parents had spoken to her in English. Like me, she had lost a connection to something essential, without knowing its name. But Alita was committed to recovering her lost heritage, and enrolled in Spanish classes every semester.

Sitting at home one night, I resolved to do something about it, and began Googling. Spotify yielded limited results, YouTube a few basic lessons insufficient for mastery; Amazon was a total blank. Then, I struck gold. St. Aloysius College, Mangalore - where my grandfather John Baptist Coutinho had once studied - hosted online Konkani classes, for the available and motivated. I wasn’t too late. I signed up immediately.

In the dark of winter, in our dorm room at New York University (NYU), we studied Spanish together. Just as Madame Mosseri had brought French to life, Alita opened the door to the history of Latin America, Juan Gabriel’s music, Diego Rivera’s art, and Argentine punk rock from Buenos Aires.

It’s been nearly two months - too early to announce victory. I can’t claim fluency, much less ease of comprehension. But the other evening, I picked up the phone and called my father.

Languages - formerly a zone of terror with a Hindi teacher who resembled Om Puri - became a harbinger of great joy and emotional connection. I was on a roll.

“Pai, dev boro saas dev,” I said into our WhatsApp call. “Maka khanvk zai. Make thodo asa.” “WOW!” He replied, flabbergasted. I grinned, and silently thanked our teacher Ms. Flora Castelino and St. Aloysius College.
