MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:
I hope everyone had a Wonderful Christmas and are enjoying the New Year. This is a suitable time to reflect on the year past and to consider how much our clubs have done and the effect we have had on the lives of those in our communities. Many of our neighbors and many unknown to us have had a better year because of our clubs and the work we do. Now is the time to begin planning our service projects for 2022, what can we do this year to continue the work of last year. This is also a time to remember those lions we lost in 2021. Though
jebarsanti72@gmail.com they are no longer with us, their service to their communities is a lasting legacy, and one that will be remembered. On a personal note, a lion who when District 1-J governor started our current District 1-J governor, DG Lori Chassee, and me on our journey to lions’ leadership has passed away. PDG Leo Snyder appointed DG Lori and I as Zone Chairs, beginning our progress to District Governor and mine to Council Chair. I know I speak for DG Lori as well as for myself when I say he will be missed. He was an inspiration to all lions and realized the importance of FUN in what we do. Again, I hope this is a New Year full of success, and one in which we all realize our goals and have fun doing it.

FROM MD1 GLT CHAIR:
By the time you peruse this diatribe, Christmas will be past and a new year upon us. So much has changed in the past two years. Be thankful we can nearly live a life we once were accustomed to having. Think back to last year. Our club and cabinet meetings were held on Zoom. I attended the USA/Canada Forum from my easy chair in my office. Likewise, I attended our virtual state convention. Those clubs that were limited in Zoomtype meetings used conference calls to meet. These are examples of leadership overcoming that cruel virus; leadership in that someone discovered a way for us to continue to meet, hear each other’s voice, and have face-to-face online
meetings, while being able see each other. Leaders at LCI, the Lions of Illinois, Inc, the Lions of Illinois Foundation, the districts’ leaders, and the clubs’ leaders said this virus will not kill Lions. Or did it? I know of clubs that still are not meeting. Some reasoning is the personal fear of contracting the virus. Some are because their meeting place closed or restricted gatherings. Fundraisers were cancelled and never restarted for fear of someone contracting the virus. It is these clubs that need leadership. It is these zones where the zone chairperson needs to encourage those clubs to reconvene. It is these districts where the governor needs to reach out and offer assistance. And fundraisers? If you fail to have a fundraiser, how do you help child needing eyeglasses? If you fail to have a fundraiser, who will replace you in awarding scholarships? If you fail to serve your community, will your community fail to support you? The
3 The Illinois Lion & Leo
list of if you could continue. But now, you should be grasping the obvious. What is the obvious? We need those Lions leaders in a club to step up. We need leaders to literally roll up their sleeves, and start the ball rolling. Because if we
fail to meet and serve our communities, we will fail. I will end this month’s dribble with a quote from Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” -PDG Larry McGuirre

Gordon J. Grande, 89, of Freeport, Illinois, a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a long time school administrator passed away at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 in Manor Court in Freeport, Illinois. Mr. Grande was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on February 6, 1932 to Arthur H. and Myrtle J. (Jorgenson) Grande. He attended elementary schools in Milwaukee through the fifth grade after which his family moved to Forreston, Illinois in 1943 where he graduated from high school in 1950. He then attended Northern Illinois State Teacher's College in DeKalb and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a major in social science and a minor in mathematics.
After graduation, he was united in marriage to Carol J. Woessner of Shannon, Illinois. Following his basic training in the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia, Carol joined him in Alexandria, Virginia while he attended officer's training. They then reported to Camp Pendleton in California. Following his four year stint in the Marine Corps, he accepted a teaching position in the Pearl City School System. After two years, he was promoted to the position of high school principal. While in Pearl City, he was active in the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, attended the Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon, and completed the requirements for a Master's Degree in School Administration at Western Illinois University. In 1963, he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in the Durand School District, a position he held for 24 years retiring from school administration in 1987. He then recruited for the Morrison Institute of Technology in Morrison,
14 The Illinois Lion & Leo
Illinois until retiring in 1996. While in Durand, Mr. Grande was active in the community and was named Citizen of the Year in 1979. Gordon was a member of the Durand United Methodist Church and participated in the church choir for more than twenty years. He was a 61 YEAR LIFE MEMBER OF THE Masonic Lodge and was also a member of the American Legion since 1993. In 1973 he was instrumental in organizing a Lions Club in Durand and served as its charter president and served as a 100% President again in 1998. Since assisting in the organization of the club, he has achieved 53 years of perfect attendance. In 1986-1987 Gordon served the District with distinction as a 100% District Governor. He also represented District 1-D for four years as a Trustee of the Loins of Illinois Foundation. Mr. Grande was proud of the people of Durand for their continual support of the school system.
During his twenty-four year tenure, the school never lost a school tax referendum or a school building referendum. Gordon felt that the most enjoyable years of his life were the times his family spent camping with the Bill McCorkle, Ken Krienke and Don Waller families. There were no telephones, no knocks on the door or problems that needed immediate attention. Surviving are his three sons: Brian (Linda Emerson) of Durand; Kevin of Freeport; Allen (Shannon Nelson) of Madison, WI; grandson Adam of Durand; one brother LeRoy of Rockford, IL; sister in law Mary of Racine, WI and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his wife Carol, his parents, infant twin brother Clifford Lee and his brother Arthur. A funeral ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2022 at Durand United Methodist Church with Pastor Brenda Byrne officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill
