MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:

WHATS UP?

We are on the homestretch for the lions’ year but some of the bests of the year’s activities are still ahead. On March 5, 2022, Multiple District 1 will hold its “SPRING FORUM” at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield. For only $25.00 you can experience a day of programs designed to help your Districts and clubs improve your knowledge in several areas. We will hear presentations on the topics of Planning a Membership Growth Event, Serving from the Heart, The Art of Recognition,

jebarsanti72@gmail.com Partnering for Progress, Marketing 101, and You’ve been President, Now What. We are fortunate to also have a senior member of Lions Clubs International Foundation attending who will clarify what grants are available and give practical information on how to apply. Lunch is included in the $25.00 fee. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the seminars begin at 9:00. There will also be raffles otherwise I don’t think it would be an official Lions Club event. Registration can also take place online or by mail. Next up is the State Convention, May 19, 2022-May 22, 2022. Again, registration is available online or by mail. The International Guest is Lion 2nd Vice President, Patti Hill from Canada. There should be additional information in this publication so I won’t go into details, other than to say this will be a great event and an opportunity to see good friends

from around the State. I know our convention chair has worked hard to assure a convention that we will genuinely enjoy, AND IT IS IN PERSON. The International Convention rounds out the Lions year. This year to be held in Montreal Canada June 24-28th. Again, IN PERSON. I look forward to seeing many of you at the forum and the State Convention, and I know both the outgoing and incoming governors

look forward to your attendance and support at the International Convention. That’s it for now, only three more articles to go.

Campaign 100: We Keep Getting Closer, Let’s Add a Legacy of Love

Beyond The Goal

- What A Wonderful Year for Campaign 100 I personally stop and listen every time that Louis Armstrong sings “What A Wonderful World”. It seems like no matter the time or place, it is something I need to remind myself. I thought about that when I read the report showing Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service was almost at $258 3 The Illinois Lion & Leo

million as we work toward a goal set nearly four years ago. How much better is our world as each of those dollar bills donated by Lions around the world have reached out to help where it is needed. Hospital expansion maybe, disease eradication possible, eyesight corrected sure, hearing helped, fresh water where there was none, research on childhood cancer, the programs are endless. And each of us in Illinois who have supported the campaign are the people who helped. I am proud to be one of them, and I hope you are also. Now let’s go forth in the next few months and finalize our objective. Little donations and perhaps a major one here and there and the Lions Clubs International Foundation can put an arm of caring and assistance around so many more people. We are approaching the time of year of those “leaves of green and red roses, too” along with the conclusion of Campaign 100. Please join us. Simply get in touch with lionsclubs.org/en/donate. You

The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the district Spelling Bee to dinner this Wednesday night (1/19) at the Genoa-Kingston Middle School. Three students from 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were successful in their class spelling bees and ready to spell their way to the regionals to be held at the Sycamore High School in February. The winner of this year’s GenoaKingston Spelling Bee was Kolton Robinson, a 5th grader at Genoa Elementary School and the son of Samantha Coates of Kingston. The second place winner was Cole Krueger, a 6th grader and the son of Matt and Marina Krueger of Genoa. These young gentlemen took 33 rounds of spelling to determine the winner. The final word that tripped up Cole was “prioress” and Kolton went on to spell “Darwinism” and “perdition” for the win. Third place and regional alternate was 8th

18 The Illinois Lion & Leo

grader, Peter Hernandez. The word that tripped him up in the 9th round was “wattles”. We think, as every spectator and participant was masked, pronunciation was a little more difficult than in past years, but all of those involved made the best of it. Dinner was hosted by Lion President, Bob Becker of the Genoa Lions Club, which provided pizza and trophies for the First and Second Place winners. Genoa’s McDonalds donated 12 $10 “Arch Cards”, one for each contestant. Principal Butcher of GenoaKingston Middle School had Mr. Uili act as “pronouncer” and fellow teacher, Mrs Boyer, assisted event organizer, Mrs. Emily Fowler, with judging the contest. Principal Francis of Genoa Elementary School was there to support his students and Lion Secretary VanDeHeyden helped organize the evening. Our two finalists went head to head for over 20 rounds but didn’t reach the 60 rounds like the 2017 Spelling Bee, almost running out of word lists. The first place winner received

a free pizza at the end of the night, as a happy bonus. All participants this year: 5th grade – Kolton Robinson (first place) 5th grade – Kaden Sosnowski 5th grade – Gracie Paulson 6th grade – Cole Krueger (second place) 6th grade – Evelyn Wallace 6th grade – Aaron Yang 7th grade – Elton Lin 7th grade – Samantha AbraciaWendel 7th grade – Brycen Wiegartz 8th grade – Stephen Carey 8th grade – Peter Hernandez (third place & alternate) 8th grade – Adrian Delgado Special thanks go to Lion Bradford for securing the “Arch Cards” and making the arrangements with pizza from “Smoking Grill” in Genoa. --------------------------------------The Genoa Lions have donated $500 to the Genoa Public Library to replace the drinking fountain that was donated by the Lions over 15 years ago. This year, with the leadership of Carol Wright, Terrie Garlow and Tami Verstraete, we raised over $10,000 and were able

January has been a very cold month, but our donations for 2021 have been hot this year. Our treasurer, Kirkland Lion Brian Block totaled up our donations to be nearly $20,000 slightly surpassing our 2020 donations. We are very appreciative of all our Lions who have provided the work and effort in supporting our “WE SERVE” motto. Donations not only serve vision and hearing needs, but extend to providing our parks with electricity, our schools athletic programs, our local food pantry, Tornado relief, college scholarships, local Chamber

of commerce, other Lions clubs, family services, boys baseball, school concession stand, and community Halloween and Christmas activities. ---------------------------------------
