Bartlett Lions were asked by the Bartlett Park District to help clean the area around Beaver Pond. Of course, we said yes. What a beautiful day for our Earth Day project on Saturday, April 24, 2021. 1 The Illinois Lion & Leo

I was able to attend 8 of the conventions and I enjoyed seeing and being with the Lions from all over our state. Each convention was unique just as they are during normal times when we could attend in-person. The 100th State Convention and 1st Virtual Convention will be May 15th. Here is a high-level look at the day: Thoughts

So, you have been elected as an officer for your club. Now what? How do you prepare for the

upcoming year? Well, there are several resources so that your year of Lions’ leadership is fulfilling and fun. First, talk to the person who had your position this year. Find out what is going well and what needs attention. Work with this Lion to transition into your new position. Talk with other club leaders. Find a mentor who you respect and who respects you to be a sounding board for ideas during the year. Write things down. Our lives are busy, writing things down can help with personal organization. That might mean making a list or taking notes on your mobile device. Do not let a great idea get away. Your district might have training. Most districts offer training for president, secretary, and treasurer. Other districts add club membership chair, club service chair, club marketing and communications chair and club LCIF chair. Trainings are planned at the end of this Lions’ year or the beginning of the next Lions’ year.

3 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Being in person or virtual for the training will be decided by your district. Many districts have YouTube libraries of past officer trainings and other pertinent Lion information. Lions Clubs International is a great source of information for incoming officers as well. By going to www.lionsclubs.org and putting a key word in the search box, many items are available, such as -EBooks for each of the officer positions mentioned previously. These electronic books describe in detail what each officer is to do. Links are live and go to current webpages for information. -the Virtual Events Center. The VEC has recordings of webinars on numerous topics related to leadership, membership, service, LCIF and much more. -the standard Constitution and ByLaws for the club and district. Job descriptions for the officers are found in both documents. -the Lions Learning Center. Webinars and videos are available

to build your personal leadership skills and gain valuable knowledge about Lionism. The LLC has courses bundled in learning paths to assist Lions to find what is needed for each specific office.

The USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum, www.lionsforum.org, has Lions University. By going to the website and clicking on Lions University a Lion can participate in courses at home in the comfort of his/her own home. In short, there is no reason for any Lion elected to a leadership position to say, “No one told me what to do.” As a Lion Leader, you need to reach out and prepare for this most exciting time. And, if you are repeating in an office, be sure to check things out. Times change. It is important to be current! -jamawahl@yahoo.com ---------------------------------------

Lions Service Can Still Travel We Are Two-Thirds of the Way Roads have mileposts, surveyors have benchmarks, and horse tracks have furlong poles. Everything we do has marks of progress. Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service just passed one. Towards the goal of $300 million, we have crossed over $200 million. We have a couple of months left in the third year. We had originally set the goal to be finished this Lions year. But we have been running on a mud track, and we extended our time for an additional year. If any clubs have been waiting to see how their year has progressed to donate to Lions Clubs international Foundation, now is the time to push further along those marker posts, so we go

into next year with a good lead into that final stretch. Each objective along the way is helping fight hunger, provide fresh water, or fight diabetes. With the additional contributions we can help so many more who are vision or hearing impaired. LCIF continually provides help when natural disasters strike our friends around the world. The important number is the objective to help two billion people. Thanks to all who have supported this Campaign 100. You are all heroes in service. Your District Coordinator can help and provide more information. LCIF is local Lions Clubs helping Local Lions Clubs around the world.

OFFICIAL CALL TO THE MD-1 STATE CONVENTION 9 The Illinois Lion & Leo

May 15, 2021 via Zoom Fellow Lions and Leos of MD-1, Our 100th Annual MD-1 Convention will be held May 15, 2021. Because of the pandemic restrictions related to the size of gatherings, this year’s convention will be held virtually via ZOOM. All Lions and Leos are invited to attend. This will be the first – and hopefully only – virtual state convention. The convention committee has spent a lot of time and effort working on this event. I want to thank State Convention Chair Lion Terri Pasternik for her efforts working through uncharted waters this year. Agenda Because this is a virtual event there will be no charge for attending so you do not have to leave the comfort of your home. The agenda is still being finalized but we expect the first plenary session to run from 1:00 to 3:00, followed by district caucuses and voting, with the second and final plenary session running from 6:00 to around 8:15.

Some of the highlights include hearing from our International Guest, recognition of State and International Presidential award recipients, a necrology service, voting on 4 constitutional resolutions, the announcement of the LIF Sight-And-Sound Sweepstakes winners, the revealing of next year’s Council Chair and State Chairs, and six gift card giveaways. International Guest Our International Guest this year is Past International President Clem Kusiak. PIP Clem is excited to be visiting with the Lions of Illinois and we look forward to having him with us via Zoom on May 15 th. Registration As stated earlier, registration is free this year but to attend or be a delegate you must register. The registration link and information will be sent out within the next day or two. Voting Information This year’s election will be held

10 The Illinois Lion & Leo

using Election Runner, an approved LCI electronic election program. All voting will occur between 3:00 PM and 5:45 PM on Saturday, May 15, 2021 using this software. Delegates Clubs will be entitled to the number of delegates based on their membership according to Lions International as of April 1, 2021. Each Club gets 1 delegate per 10 members or major fraction. Example – a Club with 26-34 members gets 3 delegates. A Club with 35-44 members gets 4 delegates. PDGs should be listed as delegates and do not count toward the club’s number of allowed delegates. Each Club will return their delegate form, to be received by their district Secretary by no later than May 5, 2021. Then, each district Secretary will submit Club delegate forms to the State SST - to be received by the SST no later than May 10, 2021.

Your Club MUST be in Good Standing to be able to vote – that means the Club is current with their District and MD-1 State dues by April 30, 2021. This is 15 days prior to the convention in accordance with the MD-1 C&BL. Once your Club’s delegate form is received by SST Mary and your Club is verified to be in good standing, CC Joe Vinyard will issue an email to each delegate with their unique Username and Password for the Election Runner software during the week of May 10, 2021. Delegates MUST have an email address to be able to vote. Delegates MUST be registered for the convention. Resolutions Attached to this email are the 4 constitutional Resolutions that will be on the ballot this year. Please bear with us as we work though some unprecedented circumstances to put on a successful

convention for the Lions of Illinois. We look forward to “seeing” you on May 15 th at our 100 th state convention.

Thank you for all you are doing to serve your communities!!

International Convention: Due to the continuing concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the board of directors voted to transition the 2021 Montreal Lions Clubs International Convention to a virtual event that will be delivered totally online. This decision was made with the health and safety of our Lions, staff and vendors in mind as limiting international travel and large gatherings is key to global containment strategies. Although we are disappointed that we will not be able to host this event in person, we are excited about hosting our first virtual international convention that can safely connect Lions from around the world. We are still finalizing the details of your new convention experience and will

share those with you as soon as they are ready. Here are some important details about the 2021 virtual convention we would like to share with you: Everyone is invited – Our 2021 convention will be a virtual event that is open to all Lions and Leos around the world. Registration fees – The registration fee will be US$50 until March 31, then US$75 beginning April 1. The registration fee for Leos will be US$30 regardless of date. Convention is currently scheduled for June 25-29. Additional event and registration details will be provided soon.

12 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Current registrants – Lions who are currently registered for convention will receive an email soon with more information about their registration options. Elections – Executive officer and international director elections will be conducted electronically and voting procedures will be forthcoming. Convention updates – Check our convention website LCICon for convention updates and details as they become available.

changes that place health and safety first. However, we are optimistic that with each new day there is hope, and as Lions, we continue to find new ways to stay connected, safely serve our communities and continue our global mission of service. We appreciate your understanding during this challenging time for our organization and the world and thank you for your incredible service as a Lion. Regards,

Genoa-Kingston Citizen/Student of the Year 2021 Presented by Genoa Lions In the past years the Genoa Lions have invited the 12 recipients of the Citizen of the Year Award and their parents to a dinner and award ceremony mid April. Dinner was always served prior to the award ceremony with pork chops hot from the grill served along with a battery of salads and desserts prepared by the Masonic Lodge, great food for a good cause. Brent O’Daniell the current Superintendent of G-K 21 The Illinois Lion & Leo

School District would give a brief greeting to those assembled in the Sanctuary. He would then introduce the Principal for the first and second graders. The Principal or an interested teacher would introduce the student to the audience and sing their praises. This would continue from first grade all the way to the senior in High School. Unfortunately, this year, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Ceremony and Dinner have been cancelled. This cancellation was required by the guidelines of the State of Illinois. This year the Genoa Lions and the Genoa-Kingston School District would like to honor the following students as “Citizen’s of the Year”.
