District 1F Gagewood Lions Tree give away event 1 The Illinois Lion & Leo

MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:

Well, here we are, my next to the last article. How quickly the time goes. Last year at this time I was preparing for the State Convention and here I am once again preparing for the State Convention. The significant difference this year is that it will IN PERSON! From May 20 through May 22, we will meet at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield to have fun, enjoy some camaraderie, and do a little business. The convention chair, Lion Terri Pasternak, and her committee, have done a marvelous job to make this a memorable convention. We will

jebarsanti72@gmail.com have a plenary session but there are no resolutions so no certification, caucus rooms and no voting, leaving more time for workshops. We will have presentations from LIF, The Center for Sight and Hearing, Eversight, and The Rose Parade Float committee. All of these will help reinforce your understanding that what we do really makes a difference in the lives of our communities. Another highlight, our International Guest will be able to attend, Second International VicePresident, Lion Patti Hill and her spouse Lion Greg will be in \attendance and will share her message with us, and to visit with all of you during the convention. I hope that you all will attend so that I have an opportunity to visit with all my Lion friends from around the State, something that I always look forward to. I am sure that registration information will be found

2 The Illinois Lion & Leo

somewhere in this newsletter, so please register and let’s make this a convention to remember.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM by Lion Larry McGuire, PDG (larry.mcguire4@gmail.com)

For the most part our goals are being met at a district level. And then the topic changed. And here are three very prominent issues we discussed. The first topic we discussed is club officer training. More specifically, how do we get elected/re-elected club officers to attend needed club officer training. No district has achieved 100% club attendance. Indeed, the club attendance generally never exceeds 50%.

GLT State Coordinator April 19, 2022 your district GLTs, at least those who were able to attend, meet via Zoom for our requisite quarterly review. VDG Tom Elsey hosted the meeting that was to last an hour. Six of the ten districts were represented. We succinctly reviewed our goals and action plans, and where we stand with meeting those goals.

What can we do to get you to attend your district’s club officer training? You, as an incoming club officer or re-elected club officer, tell me what it will take to get you there. Better yet, tell your district GLT or district governor what it takes to get you and your fellow officers to this needed annual training program. The second topic addressed but not resolved is district leadership. With the exception of

3 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Districts 1-A and 1-J, there seems to be fewer and fewer Lions willing to step up. Is this because district governors, due to the pandemic, are not visiting or could not visit clubs and find potential district leaders? Is it that Lions in the lower part of the state have become complacent? Perhaps the God Ol’ Boy disorder has set in? Is it because most district leaders have an alphabet behind their name and you mistakenly believe you need to be a PDG, PID, PIP to serve on the cabinet? Is there a correlation between lack of leadership and decreasing membership? The current district GLTs want to meet with the incoming district GLTs to report where we are with this sticky and bad situation. The incoming GLTs should know this is where they want to start. The third topic was the lack of participation into a great and free training program for Lions who have not served past the office of club president. I am speaking about the Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI). Districts 1-D, 1-CS and 1-CN had no one attend. District 1-A had

six attendees, 1-Bk had four attendees, 1-F had two attendees, 1-G had two attendees, 1-H had two attendees, 1-J had three attendees, and 1-M had three attendees; that is 22 total. By contrast, Wisconsin had well over 100 attend their RLLI. Why cannot we have at least 100 attend? Is it because our GLTs are not selling it? Is it linked to the possible causes of lack of local leadership? Is it linked to the possible reasons for lack of attendance at club officer training? Let me finish with this analogy. Decades ago, I managed a department store. A promotional sales incentive was upcoming. I met with my sales staff and told them of the incentives. I ended my meeting with these words, “If you don’t want to make sales, I can’t make you. But if you want to make sales, I can’t stop you.” I managed the smallest store in the chain of 300 stores. My little store led the entire chain in sales of the promotional items. What is the moral to that story?

4 The Illinois Lion & Leo

It applies two ways. It applies to finding new club members as well as finding new leaders in your club, in your district, and within MD-1. If we do not do such, look for this sign.

Campaign 100: We Keep Getting Closer, Let’s Add a Legacy of Love

It Has Been A Marathon, But We Will Succeed The finish line is near. We have almost finished the marathon. Our physical system is feeling the strain, but the goal is attainable. A little over $18 million dollars remain to complete the worldwide giving goal of $300 million in extended funds for Lions Clubs International Foundation. That is something like 6% left. In just under two months Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service will be

history. As our team of LCIF Chairpersons have been working towards the goal, the needs continue to expand. Natural disasters continue, people still need vision and hearing care, hunger expands, diabetes continues to attack people, childhood cancer also and so many other humanitarian concerns. And, now, of course, the refuge and displaced persons fund has placed even larger demands on LCIF. Many of our Illinois clubs have stepped up to help. Thank you so much for that. The State Convention is just

around the corner. Please stop by the LCIF table and perhaps add a few more dollars. It will be good to visit with you and talk about running together to that finish line. The Lions started at 8:00 a.m. with Lions Corner Park on Madison and Walnut and two other Genoa parks, spreading brand new wood chips (ASTM, A.D.A. certified) under all of the playground equipment. The wood chips are there to absorb the impact from a fall and to keep mud and weeds away from the play area, and need yearly augmentation or replacement. In past years, weeds and unwanted scrub trees have been removed on Spruce-Up day but not this spring.
