“IM” Illinois Message:
HelloMD-1,
I hope you all had an exciting Halloween and are still enjoying your candy. And just like that it’s November.
MD 1 continues to prosper, at this writing the state is currently a +103 members. Thank you to all the Lions of MD 1 for your efforts to increase membership. We certainly could not accomplish this without each and every Lion in the state. What to write about this onth?????
How about why you should attend your District Convention? I had the pleasure of attending the District 1 CN convention in Centralia, IL September 14 th & 15 th. First of all, my congratulations to DG Sherry Gates and convention chair PDG Deb Graney for an entertaining and informative convention. They changed it up by having the
convention at a wonderful venue, where all the convention activities took place. We also had a chance to visit and have some fun with the Lions of CN in theHospitality room on Friday & Saturday evening. I appreciate your district adopting the Bloody Mary/Mimosa Toast which started in District 1-A. My district was flattered that you liked this idea. We borrowed the parade of banners from District 1F and we still use it today. It just goes to show you how we learn and share from each other.
While I was at the District 1 CN convention, I attended some interesting seminars. The first one was about a product called CaptionCall. CaptionCall is part of a federally funded program to benefit people with hearing loss who need captions to effectively use the phone. This fund pays the
total cost of service for qualified users. CaptionCall displays big easy to read text that automatically captions your conversations. It rings, and works just like a regular phone. If you are interested, contact them at 877-557-2227 or CaptionCall.com. I ‘m sure you have many candidates in your districts that would qualify for this program. I have already shared this information with my club and they are working with the Veterans in our community.
Additionally, another interesting fundraising project I learned about at this Convention was about the Monroe County Lions who are currently selling Columbian coffee at $16.00 a bag. The interesting part about this project is the coffee is from local farms in Caturra, Columbia. The coffee is locally roasted in Monroe County, IL so it’s always fresh. I have attached a link should you be interested in
ordering some if this delicious coffee. https://cherrystreetroasters. com/product/monroe county lions
If I had not attended this Convention I would have never, learned any of this great information.
The next convention, I plan on attending is the 1-M convention November 4 th & 5 th in Effingham, IL. Will I see you there? This District is also well known for some interesting seminars.
I have also included a list of upcoming MD-1 District and State Convention. If you have not attended your District convention, why not go this year. You never know what you could learn and have some fun with the Lions.

Thank you so much for your Service!

MD 1 is growing in membership so far this year, up by 107 members to date. That is good news, but we all
know that we are also losing members as well. I will be meeting with the district GMTs this week to discuss resources strategies for member retention.
A big part of retention is member satisfaction. I’dlikeyoutoreflecton a few questions. Do those who join our clubs think their time and effort are being used wisely? Do they feel thatsparkofLionismintheactivities they are doing? You can assume youknow, oryoucanask. LCIoffers a Membership Satisfaction Guide that contains a new member and a former member questionnaire, as well as a step by step process for assessing and improving membership satisfaction. It can be found online at
https://cdn2.webdamdb.com/md_I wUqisFwZs46.jpg.pdf?v=1. These tools can focus efforts so that time spent on membership activities yields results. Another great resource for acquiring new members and motivatingexistingonesistheLions Club International YouTube Channel. This channel shares inspiring videos about how Lions aremakingadifferenceglobally. We can engage friends, family and the community through service by using these videos. SHOWING is more effective than TELLING. As the description states, “A picture is worthathousandwords, andaction speaks louder than words”. These videoswouldbeagreatresourcefor sharing with the members attending club meetings and the potential members attending informational meetings. It was very simple to share a video on my Facebook page this morning. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/c/lionscl ubs.
I am currently working on a Membership Development Grant forDistrict1 CN. Thesedistrictlevel grants can fund retention and
recruitment activities. Used in conjunction with the Membership Growth Event Toolkit from LCI a region or regions could hold events to increase and/or engage membership. If we truly believe in what we do as Lions, then we all need to work toward improving the healthofourclubsandourdistricts. Think about getting a grant application together. Always remember that you also have“peopleresources” in theform ofyourdistrictGMTandmyself. We are here to serve you in all your membership efforts. I am including their names and contact information for your convenience. Please consider adding a club membership goal to your agenda if you don’t have one already, AND a plan to reach it. Finally, take time to enjoy the beautiful fall weather, family, and friends. As we move towards the holidays let us count our blessings and be thankful for all the service Lionsaroundtheworlddoforthose in need.
