MD1 Concil Chair Speaks:
jebarsanti72@gmail.com
Over the August 13-15 weekend, I had the privilege of being one of the presenters at the Regional Lions Leadership Institute, along with District Governor Gail Anton and State Global Leadership Chair Larry McGuire. We started with a fun introductory session led by District Governor Gail, then spent an enjoyable time going over programs such as Diversity, Lions Fundamentals, Public Speaking, Local Issues and Opportunities, Working in Teams and others. The 19 participants were enthusiastic, and eager to join in the discussions and work sessions. They made this Institute enjoyable for everyone, including the presenters. I hope next year we will again offer this
program and that lions from across the State will join in the opportunity to increase their leadership skills. Speaking of programs, after the September Council of Governors meeting, we will hold a Global Action Team Summit where State and District Global Leadership, Global Membership, and Global Service Chairs will meet to discuss ways to achieve our goals in these areas. You won’t be left out; the district Global Action Team chairs will be bringing the ideas from this summit to Your districts and asking your help in implementing them. The Governors in each district are working hard to increase membership and service and promote leadership. They need your support to succeed. This summit will provide new approaches to help accomplish these goals. I hope to see the Global Action Team Members from all the districts at this summit so that the ideas generated will be spread throughout the State and then implemented by the clubs and members. FROM MD1 GLT CHAIR:
Change is coming. Is your district prepared? Last month I was absent from this page. Right after we were vaccinated for COVID, Lion Ann planned a long, out west, trip. Hotels had been booked and tours were paid for in March. For 18 days we were on the road. I had no computer with which to write and submit an article on leadership. But that was kind of the plan, to get away from everything. Sometimes you need to step back and take a breath. It can help revive you and clear your head of cobwebs.
So, what has happened with leadership since last hearing from me? Multiple District 1 held a successful Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI) in East Peoria. It was attended by 19 Lions. CC John Barsanti and DG Gail Anton were excellent in instructors. Reviews were great, with some even wanting the Institute to be a day longer. New friendships were forged, and fresh ideas were brought back to clubs and districts. We were honored by the presence of ID Bob Block. He was not a candidate; he was just there to see what an RLLI is. He says he is expected to speak about RLLI, but has never been to one. Now he can speak authoritatively on the subject. CC John challenged each attendee to voluntarily donate $5.00 to Campaign 100. As he noted we are leaders and leaders lead. So, with 22 donors in the room at $5.00 each that should total $110.00. But we did better than that, we raised $355.00 for campaign 100.

As to leadership in MD-1, I saw something that really bothers me. There was a map on the wall and each attendee placed a marker from whence they came. Now before I go any further, I will grant you the Illinois Lions population is in the greater Chicago area. But that is only population, not necessarily leadership. Leaders can come from any district be it district 1-J with 2,000+ members or 1-CS with its 600+/members. So, I muse and ponder and put before you this question, “Why was no Lion from 1-D, 1-CN and 1-CS in attendance at the RLLI?” I just cannot understand why or how this can be. “Well, I have a job,” you may offer. Or, “I have a family,” another may say. Yes, you do have those. But many of those who attended the RLLI have them, too. Basically, there is no cost to attend an RLLI. Your only expense is your travel to and from the Institute. Everything else related to your training is FREE! Did I mention that RLLI is FREE? And the leadership skills you
learn at RLLI can just as easily be applied to your employment as they can be to your club or your district. Leadership is leadership no matter where it is used. Your Council of Governors has already approved us to seek a grant for next year’s RLLI. As we work toward getting it ready, I want the leaders of 1-D, 1-CN, 1-CS and 1-G (one attendee) to push hard, to sell, to promote your penitential leaders to attend any leadership training offered. Especially when it is FREE. And the mentoring of new leaders is becoming increasingly important. Governors, you better be on the lookout for potential leaders when you make your club visits. Seek that Lion out and encourage that Lion to consider moving into a cabinet position. Assign a mentor to that potential leader. As many already know, change has arrived. District governors can serve only one term. No more PDG’s like me, who served twice. Past District Governors cannot serve as zone chairs. Zone chairs can only

serve three consecutive terms.

Greetings fellow Lions! The MD1 GAT Summit was held September 18th in Bloomington. I want to thank all who were able to attend. I was pleased to lead the GMT group of GMT-Ds, DGs, FVDGs, and SVDGs who worked to review new membership materials and
This year MD1 has two new documents to assist district GMTs and club membership chairs with all areas of membership: recruitment, retention, and member satisfaction. The purpose of these new materials is to offer an organized collection of resources and strategies to districts and clubs. My hope is that it will be a quick and easy way for our Lion membership leaders to find assistance to help them succeed in their efforts. The GAT Membership Team reviewed these documents and made suggestions for improvement. The new MD1 District GMT Manual and the Club Membership Chair Manual are now available. Both will be posted on
5 The Illinois Lion & Leo
the MD1 website and have been emailed out. Another resource created as a result of the COG Goals was a set of customizable New Member Orientation materials. Both a PowerPoint presentation and a Word document can be used to inform new members of what being a Lion is all about. It might also be nice to use these during a “social” event where new members meet and greet current members. Stories could be shared and connections made that will support the new members and strengthen the club. These will also be posted on the MD1 website. MD1 continues to grow our membership! We are currently up 53 members for the year. We have five districts with positive membership growth and five in the red at this point. While recruitment is off to a great start with 336 new members since July 1, the same pattern of drops continues with 283 Lions lost. While MD1 is currently in positive growth, my GMT efforts are
going to be heavily focused on helping districts help their clubs stop the exodus of members. This means addressing two main issues: member engagement and satisfaction. I hold the belief that you can’t fix a problem when you don’t know what is causing it. That means gathering data on dropped members and the satisfaction level of current members. One area of focus will be compiling data from dropped members to try and understand why they left their service as a Lion. Emails are many times effective, but also can be easily overlooked. We will be using a questionnaire that will be mailed directly to past members. In the area of membership satisfaction, I am working to convert the excellent LCI “How are Your Ratings” tool to an online format for not only gathering responses, but providing a dashboard for viewing compiled data. I will be working to the best of my ability to help the Lions of MD1 have a successful membership journey. That journey must include

However, have you considered a personal donation on a regular basis? One Lion has been sending $5 a pay period to the Campaign. That’s $130 a year. Over a ten year period that simple $5 can make a statement to service. And pretty much painless. Most of us would not miss $5 every two weeks. Maybe your own budget would do better. As we wind up this Campaign, now is a good time to develop a regular plan of donating, creating your own personal legacy of love. Simply get in touch with lionsclubs.org/en/donate.
