Jaadu sweeps Punjab big guns into oblivion Preface: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got what it always wanted since its inception about ten years ago: a full state to govern. In the recently concluded Punjab State Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on 19th March 2022, the voters gave AAP an overwhelming and decisive mandate for “change”. AAP created history by bagging 92 of 117 seats in the legislature. In a five-cornered contest, it secured 41% of popular votes. No party in Punjab ever registered such an emphatic win in the history of its polls. The AAP victory is a tsunami that swept everyone. The state’s oldest party, the overtly religious party of the Sikh Panth, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed to win only 3 seats. Among its big
guns who lost were party patriarch and five-time chief minister, Parkash Singh Badal, party president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Majithia. The incumbent ruling party, Indian National Congress Party (INC), came a distant second with only 18 seats. In the 2017 elections, INC had secured a massive mandate by winning 77 seats. However, its rule was marred by allegations of not delivering on its poll promises, chief among them was ending mafia Raj, and the drug menace. There was constant infighting between the chief minister Amarinder Singh and the state party president, Navjot Sidhu. Just four months before the elections, the CM was replaced with Charanjit Singh Channi, a Dalit leader. In the elevation of a Dalit as CM, the congress high command calculated that it can retain power.
23 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Contrary to the calculations, the voters rejected not only Channi but Sidhu too. Amarinder Singh, the former maharaja of Patiala, who allied with BJP after leaving INC, too lost in his bastion. PM Narendra Modi deployed considerable energy and resources to this election, as is his wont, to entice the voters to elect the BJP alliance. Sensing that the AAP was in ascendancy, he mounted a negative campaign against AAP and it chief, Arvind Kejriwal. But to no avail. The Punjabi voter had no use for his theatrics. BJP ended up with 2 seats. The Challenges for AAP in Punjab: AAP won Punjab on its promises to implement the Delhi Model of Governance aka Kejriwal Model. So, it is pertinent to ask what is this “Delhi Model”. The AAP. ruling in Delhi for the past seven years, has come up with a model of governance -Delhi Modelcentered around its policies and programs in various fields including health, education, women safety and empowerment, doorstep delivery of services, free power and
water supply, free bus travel for women and fighting corruption. For the past seven years, AAP government has allocated 25% of Delhi NCT’s budget expenditure to education. It has successfully transformed the government schools into institutions of highest learning outcomes. One of the measures for the transformation is the peas percentage in CBSE XII exams. The Delhi government schools have registered 98% while elite private schools registered 92%. The Delhi Model of Education transformation has found admirers in other states. Two years ago, the new Maharashtra government announced that it will try to emulate the Delhi model to revive and reform its public schools. The second priority for AAP in Delhi was health. Though heath is a basic civic need, successive governments in have neglected public health to the extent that there is no credible public healthcare system. The AAP government changed that in Delhi NCT. Beginning on 2015, health received 15% of the budgetary
24 Veez Illustrated Weekly
expenditure allocation, every year. It introduced a concept called Mohalla Clinics which have attracted global attention as an innovation in improving basic heath infrastructure. The AAP government in Delhi has also successfully dismantled the tanker water mafia by laying piped water connections to every household, including the slums and other colonies where poorest of poor live. Piped and metered water up to 20,000 liters per day is free for Delhi’s citizens. Metered electricity is free to small domestic consumers. In addition, by near elimination of theft of electricity through corrupt practices by power distribution company employees has generated surpluses sufficient to reduce across the board tariffs. After the jubilation in the aftermath of its stupendous poll victory in Punjab, AAP will need to focus on the challenge — to address the multiple, structural crises that afflict Punjab. Punjab is no Delhi NCT. the state Door delivery of government services is another area where the
AAP government has made life easier to Delhi residents. No more chasing the government employees in their offices and paying bribes to get anything from a driver’s license to a ration card. It is the government employees ringing the doorbells of Delhi residents to provide the services with no hassles. Punjab is a lot more complex; and so are its problems. It had its days of glory during the Green Revolution with its rice and wheat fields feeding the hungry populations of the country. Gone are those happier days. Agriculture has become economically unviable and ecologically unsustainable. The state has been unable to take advantage of the IT or services sector boom. Both industry and the young are fleeing Punjab. Drug addiction continues to increase. For a resurgence, AAP must now construct a “Punjab model” that responds to the strong desire for change which propelled it to power with the massive mandate. Kejriwal’s 10-point Punjab Model:
25 Veez Illustrated Weekly
In its election manifesto, AAP spelled out a 10-point agenda which will include providing free power to people up to 300 units per billing cycle. Kejriwal said his party will generate employment avenues in the state which will make youth who have left for greener pastures in economically advanced countries such as Australia, UK, US and Canada to contemplate coming back once they get jobs in their own state. Listing out other priorities of his party, Kejriwal said the AAP will work to control drug menace which, he said, is continuing as before as drug mafia enjoys patronage from powers that be. Among other agenda points of the AAP's ‘Punjab Model’, Kejriwal promised to improve the condition of government schools and hospitals in the state. He added as many as 16,000 Mohalla clinics will also be opened in the health sector.
AAP government had always blamed the Pollution in Delhi to stubble burning in Punjab and promised to implement a scientific solution to the problem if it is voted to power in the state. Now that Punjab has an AAP government, implementing its solution will be one of its challenges. The 10-point Punjab Model did not find a place for pollution control. The eighth agenda item is that every woman over the age of 18 will receive a monthly deposit of one thousand rupees into her bank account. The ninth is, the farming system will be fixed. It is easier said than done. The farmer has gotten used to government procurement through the APMC and the MSP regime. Weaning the farmers away from the established farming practice will test the best management skills of AAP and its agricultural experts. Speaking about the trade and industry agenda on the tenth point, Kejriwal had said that the AAP will put an end to the Raid Raj and
26 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Corruption in Punjab. “The AAP will put in place an honest system so that every entrepreneur and businessman can do his or her business happily. Only when business and industry grow will children be able to find work, he had elaborated. AAP Delhi Model to go national? Having tasted spectacular success in Punjab within a span of seven years, AAP leadership believes that it has legitimate right to demand a national role in the anti-BJP opposition space. In fact, the fight in Goa was to determine the victor between two aspirants for the role: TMC and AAP. TMC, in alliance with a Goan party failed to win any seats for itself. AAP managed to win two seats on its own. An independent supported by AAP too won. Thus, AAP will have a voice in the Goan assembly. Its situation is akin to Punjab in 2017 where it had won 20 seats. It is highly likely that in 2027 Goa state assembly elections, AAP will be able to sell its Punjab Model to Goans and vacuum clean all nonBJP votes.
For now, its immediate sights are set on Gujarat where elections are due by the end of the year. Once again, AAP will target the non-BJP votes, primarily the Congress voters to its fold. It is unlikely to drive BJP out of power in the state but will open a foothold in the assembly. Chances are that it will emerge as the principal opposition to BJP in Gujarat. Educate Students Become Humane
At the end of World War II, this letter was found in a Nazi concentration camp. It is addressed to Teachers: “Dear Teachers, I am a survivor of a concentration camp. My eyes saw what no man should witness: Gas chambers built by learned engineers, children poisoned by educated physicians, infants killed by trained nurses. Women and babies shot and burnt by High School and College Graduates. So, I am suspicious of education.
to
My request is: Help your students become human. Your efforts must never produce learned monsters, skilled Psychopaths, educated illiterates. Reading, writing, arithmetic are important only if they serve towards making our children more humane.” I have visited at least 3 Nazi Concentration Camps – Dachau and Flossenbürg both in Germany, and Auschwitz in Poland. I distinctly remember the gas chambers, prison cells, beds, uniform of prisoners, high-walls, barbed fences, watchtowers and many other things preserved to remember the heinous crimes committed during Hitler’s Nazi regime. At the entrance of the Concentration Camps are the boards in five prominent languages – English, German, French, Hebrew and Russian stating “Never Again!” Sadly however, what happened
28 Veez Illustrated Weekly
before and during World War II in Nazi Germany is still happening in different ways and in different degrees in many parts of the world; China, North Korea, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria, Nigeria, Russia, Yemen, to mention a few countries. Ours is no exception, though to a lesser extent. But what is happening here is disturbing and worrying because there are definite patterns and dangerous trends. There seems to be plans and attempts to imitate Nazi ideology. One fears things may go from bad to worse and end up in a huge disaster. Religious persecutions, atrocities against minorities, ethnic or caste conflicts, large-scale corruption, huge scams and frauds, rampant practice of abortion, rapes and murders, oppression of poor and marginalized, hatred and violence against particular communities, current hijab controversy in Karnataka and many similar things are daily affairs. And these are not all crimes committed by poor illiterates. Most of those who perpetrate these crimes are
‘educated’ politicians, businessmen, doctors, religious leaders, teachers, students etc. Certain fundamentalists and bigoted leaders and their organizations brainwash followers or gullible people with violent, hateful, inflammatory speeches and dangerous ideologies which promote such crimes. Unbridled greed, avarice and lust lead to corruption, scams and sexual abuse, including rapes. How is that the so-called educated people use their knowledge and skills for wrong things like abortions, murders, terrorism, bank frauds, ciber crimes, pornography, wars etc? The main fault lies in our education system. We train children to be skilled, competent and knowledgeable, but not human and humane. Most of our efforts, energy and time are spent on information and indoctrination. Very little attention is paid to the formation of the heart, conscience and character. Most of our institutions do not provide value education, moral science or ethics, even in Medical,
29 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Nursing and Engineering Colleges or Business Schools. There is no good example of honesty, truthfulness, tolerance, respect for one another’s religion and culture etc. given by parents at home. A good tree produces good fruits and a bad tree bad. Many parents themselves are violent, religious bigots, corrupt and unjust. A child brought up by such parents will surely become like them. Whereas if you bring up a child in an ambience of love, respect, tolerance, truthfulness, honesty, integrity, understanding and appreciation he/she will learn to love and respect others, will be honest and truthful, human and humane. At the entrance gate of a University in South Africa, the following message was posted for contemplation: “Destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long-range missiles… It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students. Patients die at the hands of such
doctors; Buildings collapse at the hands of such engineers; Money is lost at the hands of such economists & accountants; Humanity dies at the hands of such religious scholars; Justice is lost at the hands of such judges. The collapse of education is the collapse of the nation.” It is well known that there are corrupt practices in admissions, examinations and promotion of children in many institutions. Fake universities and fake degrees are also not uncommon. Many a politician who has never gone to college or university boasts of degrees. In many schools and colleges unfair means and cheating in examination is not only allowed but encouraged. What type of men and women can we expect from such Institutions, except as described above in the Message at the entrance gate of a University in South Africa? “Patients die at the hands of such doctors; buildings collapse at the hands of such
30 Veez Illustrated Weekly
engineers; money is lost at the hands of such economists & accountants; humanity dies at the hands of such religious scholars; justice is lost at the hands of such judges”. Indeed, “the collapse of education is the collapse of the nation.” Do we not see this happening in many nations of the world, including our own? Therefore, we need to train our children to be human and humane. St. Francis de Sales said so rightly, “the heart of education is the education of the heart.” Let us not forget or neglect the heart of education. Let us not neglect the education of the heart. Let us educate our children to be future men and women of “character, conscience, competence, compassion and commitment.” For that is the true aim of education as propounded by the All India Catholic Education Policy of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). Even though many institutions claim to offer quality and holistic education, unfortunately, most of
our educational institutions concentrate only on one aspect i.e., competence. The other four – character, conscience, compassion and commitment - are grossly neglected. No wonder corruption, violence, intolerance, sexual abuse, rapes, murders, abortions, religious persecutions, terrorism etc. are rising. The only solution is to educate our children by word and example to be human and humane, compassionate and kind, tolerant and respectful, just and truthful. This is a Herculean task and requires concerted efforts, long-term planning and effective implementation. The only effective method for this is good example. Parents and teachers have to be role models. For, as St. Pope Paul VI said: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers. And if he listens to teachers, it is because they are also witnesses”. And as Dr. Albert Schweitzer put it, “in inspiring or influencing others, example is not the main thing, it is the only thing.” Unfortunately, this only thing,

Shraddhanjaly or Obituary for Daphne Lobo Since the beginning of Manasa conception and planning in the Nintees, she has been supporting her husband Dr. Edward Lobo in his intensive work for this Project, and Me here in Germany to collect Funds for it. She is to phone to me very often from home and speak elaborately, encouraginging me in my work to collect Funds here in Germany for Manasa Rahabilitation Centre.
My dear Dahne, Your untimely and sudden death has left us very sorrowful . In your death, we have lost Gem of a person, a great esteemed loving personality . Although you are no more with us, we hope you are enjoying the Heavely Bliss and that gives us consolation. Mrs. Daphne whom I knew from school days well and called lovingly „Baby“, but since 1995 very much connected with her because of Manasa Rehabilitation Centre in Pamboor.
2005, she came to Germany with Dr. Eddie Lobo, her husband, for my Silver Jubilee of Priesthood. That time, she met several German Benefactors of Manasa, thanked them profusely for their contribution towards Manasa and encouraged them to donate further. She visited here ( in Germany) some Institutions and gave some talks / Seminars on Manasa, stressing the need of having such a Centre for the Handicapped or better say „less privileged“ children of our Soceity.
She was soft spoken, very kind hearted, very loving and compassionate and soft hearted

towards me. She is to phone to me very often and talked to me very long, enquering about my health. She was very much concerned about my well being. When my German Friends, most of them Benefactors of Manasa, came to India in 2001/2002 and 2004/2005, she happily hosted several of them in her house, served them happily and generously, and took the whole group all around to show diffrent places in Udupi and in the near vicinity. Thats why, all of them remember you so much and are very upset at your early, untimely death. They are all praying for you. Whenever I came to India, when I needed any Help, you went out of your way and helped me. It was always a great Joy to speak to you. Whenever she went to Canada, during her stay there, she used call me practically every week and talk to me very long. One week before her death, she called me and talked to me over the phone for a long time but she never gave any impression that she is suffering. Very little did I know that it was my last Chat with her and she
will soon be leaving us. She spoke to me as usual with a soft and loving voice but with joy. I was also very much connected with her husband Dr. Edward Lobo and their 4 children: Dimple, Edle, Reynal and Errol. Dimple, her eldest daughter invited me to Canada (Montreal) to baptise their first child. I also stayed along with a German couple, in her daughters house Reynal, in Dubai. My heartfelt condolences and prayerful bestwishes to her husband Dr. Edward Lobo and to her four children Dimple, Edle, Reynal and Errol and their families All the German Friends and Benefactors, especially Hedwig and Klaus, Heidrun and Uli, Horst and Margit, are really schocked with her untimely, early death and miss her very much and send their deep sympathies and condolences to her husband Dr. Edward Lobo. Dear Baby, I think of you and miss you very much and pray for you. I hope, you enjoy the heavely bliss with all the Saints and Angels and obtain for us God’s Blessings and Graces. COMPARE NOT, SMILE OFTEN !
Such a genuine, beautiful, cute smile one may not come across with the children who live under the most comfortable roof. If you notice here, child’s legs, hands and whole body is bound inside the plastic bag practically wrapped in the immense heat. Who knows since how long time he has been hanging/suffering around under that hand. Yet when the photographer took his picture, one can find in him how delightful is his simile I mean to say that how beautiful is his tender heart and mind. (this picture I came across in the internet. Although it is a gross violation of human rights and we all
concerned condemn it yet few thoughts came to my mind which I thought of sharing with you all). Irrespective of such uncomfortableness, how this child could manage such a broad smile indicating as if no pain that he is going through. The only reason perhaps I assume is that this small child is not in a position to COMPARE himself with other children’s life style and their comfort. Therefore, he is completely happy without any anxiety so he smiles broadly. The message I got form this picture is, one should not compare themselves with the more fortunate once, their richness, their children’s academic and talents. If so, perhaps every one of us may walk in the shadows of this Great Child's Smile without an iota of doubt. Gravely, now a days we observe, unhealthy competition in the areas wealth and

academic carrier. Why to Compare ? It does not mean that if the parents are rich that their children have high or greater IQ, not necessarily. By spending lot of money, it does not mean that parents will achieve the results why all that money is spent after. Therefore, parents should not compel their children other than what children would like to pursue for, if not might end up in miserable results. Further, Parent’s Power of Money should not be experimented and torture their own children to take away their mental peace and daily happiness. Absolute anxiety kills once happiness absolutely. Although there are many factors of anxiety, here I take only one of it ‘COMPARISION’. Should one compare with others or not ? I sincerely welcome your thoughts to share with us all. Below given some of the hypothesis to shed some light: 1. If we took at the strengths of others, and compared them to our weaknesses, how we would size up? And will it
make us feel good? 2. Should parents compel their children to study harder and harder because their neighbors and their relative’s children have succeeded brilliantly? 3. Should a family compare with other families economically and social life? What gain ? 4. Can an employees compare himself with his talented boss to walk in his footsteps, Is this concept is right or wrong ? 5. Should one compare his religion with other religion to ridicule. Can God accept those hateful prayers if they destruct others faith and their holy places. At the end, does this individual soul can achieve its destiny that he dreamt life long for ? 6. It is election time now. Usually, why various political parties do not compare with other political parties as long as objectivity is concerned. What hinders them most and why ?

If we measure up from above, the funny thing is, this is what most of us do at one time or another — and some of us do pretty often. It’s a sure-fire recipe for a drop in selfconfidence and a broad smile unlike this child. Wise quotes, makes interesting reading: “Why compare yourself with others? 9th March, 2022 To, The Prime Minister’s Office, New Delhi Subject: Orders given to street vendors to close shop for the days that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be visiting Gujarat from the 11th of March Honourable Prime Minister, We have come to know that you will be visiting your home state Gujarat for a few days from the 11th of March. We understand in their efforts to ensure your security the Government of Gujarat along with Ahmedabad and other Municipal Corporations that are part of your itinerary are taking the requisite steps as per protocols and Standard Operating Procedures. We fully understand and support the security arrangements that are needed in the event of the visit of the Prime Minister and other senior public servants of the state. However, we are concerned about some actions of the government authorities in Gujarat which violate the fundamental rights of citizens. Some of these actions are delineated below: 1. The authorities have issued orders that in all the areas that you will be visiting and along the route that you would be travelling, street vendors should not conduct business from the 10th to the 12th of March. Street vendors who work on the SG highway, Prahladnagar, Ashram Road, Airport area, Stadium, 132 feet Ring Road and the GMDC area and Vastrapur Lake have already been closed for vending as conveyed to us by representatives of street vendors.
While the police and authorities have the mandate to ensure that there would be no compromise in the security of the PM and his entourage, such a violation of the right to pursue livelihood of thousands of citizens simply cannot be tolerated; such unconstitutional orders and harassment by public officials need to be stopped forthwith. It not only shows an inhuman approach, but also a total lack of capability to manage security details without disrupting normal life of citizens. 57 Veez Illustrated Weekly
The PM’s itinerary is meticulously organized and scheduled. It is understandable, if, for a short period of time when the PM’s convoy passes (may be even upto half a day) or when the PM is holding meetings in a particular venue the shops and vendors could close for a few hours. But to issue such blanket orders as to close their business for 2 or 3 days is inhuman, violative of the right to life and livelihood of thousands of citizens and lowers the dignity of the PM’s office. Hence it is important that you as the PM instruct the respective governments and authorities that such orders be revoked and work out the logistics in a manner that protects the livelihoods of citizens. 2. It should be noted that this violative practice of closing down street vending has been going on since a number of years (2014-15) and it is high time that you take the initiative to put an end to it. 3. Indiscriminate preventive detention and arrests, house arrests, ‘najar kaid’ of civil society activists have started from today, and is expected to intensify further tomorrow. We are aware of several such cases and have received complaints of such harassment and detention by local police, ATS, SOG and Crime Branch. Such detention and arrests of activists without any provocation or intent by wrongfully invoking the provisions under Bombay Police Act or BPMC Act or even PASA, is a violation of the freedom of expression and mobility in a democracy. This again lowers the dignity of the august office you occupy, as the PM of world’s largest democracy. In fact we believe that if during your visit safe and orderly protests are allowed it would definitely enhance the image of our country. But even if that is not allowed, preventive detention and arrests should be stopped forthwith; and we suggest that you personally intervene to stop such undemocratic acts by the law enforcement authorities. 4. Such preventive action targeting history-sheeters, people with criminal records, those with licensed fire-arms in the region is understandable; but to harass law-abiding citizens and activists is simply not acceptable, just because they may have expressed dissent or opposition to the government. Such actions are unconstitutional, and when resorted to ostensibly for the security of highest Jan Sevak of our nation (the PM) it erodes our great democracy and the faith of its citizens in your leadership. We, the concerned citizens of Gujarat, therefore demand that you personally intervene to rescind the order preventing street vendors from conducting business for 5 days. We also demand that you intervene to instruct the DGP 58 Veez Illustrated Weekly

NAZI PROPAGANDA IN INDIA DR. EUGENE J. D’SOUZA (Research Paper presented at the Indian History Congress in Calicut (Kozhikode) University in December 1999. This paper was published in the Proceedings of the Indian History Congress, Diamond Jubilee (60 th) Session, Calicut, 1999, pp. 783-795. Also published in Social Scientist Volume 28, Numbers 5-6, May-June 2000, pp.76-90). Anti-Nazi League: In order to counter the Nazi propaganda, ‘The Anti-Nazi League’ was founded by those young Indians who were opposed to the Nazi ideology. The League operated from Minto House, Byculla, Bombay. T.K. Menon was its honorary Secretary. According to him, the Anti-Nazi League was composed of ‘respectable’ Indians who had grown tired of Nazi scheming against the safety of their country. It had its branches in almost all the principal towns and centres in India and elsewhere and managed by patriotic Indians.
Through various articles in newspapers, especially the Bombay Sentinel, T.K. Menon attempted to expose the various activities of the Nazis in the city of Bombay. In an article entitled “Secret Service and Police Parade in Full Blast in City: Nazi Outrage in City”, T.K. Menon narrated the following incident to highlight the nefarious activities of the Nazis. A Jewish boy aged thirteen while moving about in the road was looking at an attractive Delage Sports car parked on the roadside along with many other cars. While the boy was looking at the car, Nazi Heidel suddenly
60 Veez Illustrated Weekly
pounced upon him from an adjoining car and the boy was bodily lifted into the car and driven away. On the way to Heidel’s residence, the boy was abused as ‘damn Jewish rat’, ‘British swine’, ‘John Bull’s hireling’ etc. At the residence of Heidel a hurried consultation took place between Heidel, Mrs. Heidel and a few other Nazis and it was decided to throw the boy into ‘concentration camp’ which happened to be the bathroom of his house. Mrs. Heidel suggested that the boy should be handed over to the local police, but Heidel was not prepared for this and ultimately the boy was released after he was forced to sign the following statement: “I dirty British Jew will never tear down another flag, nor will I disrespect the Nazis again”.
this gang was a Gestapo (Nazi Secret Service man) and his chief job was to spy on the Germans and to keep track of all anti-Nazi elements in the country.
The Nazis had organised a Motor Patrol who wandered about the streets of Bombay every night in search of Indian boys looking at German cars and to examine if anyone was sticking anti-Naziposters in the streets. The leader of
In another article in the Bombay Sentinel T.K. Menon gave a descriptive account of the clandestine meeting of the Nazi representatives. According to him important Nazi representatives from all over the country assembled
The Nazis also carried on espionage activities in the city. One German photographer sent a map of Bombay to Germany marking the positions of the Bombay harbour, electric supply station, telephone exchange, gas power station, light house, reservoirs of Malabar Hill and Mazagaon Hills, Tansa and Vihar Lakes, Colaba barracks and the railway line connecting Bombay with the rest of the province. Another German named Gill was seen moving about with Arabs in Bombay and was said to be interested in the Arab-Jewish trouble in Palestine.

in Bombay from 17th to 22nd July 1939 under the pretext of celebrating the anniversary of “The Deutsche Klub” in Bombay. Herr Kollemberg sent out the invitation to the ‘celebration’ while the arrangements were in the hands of Herr Schliper of Havero Trading Company (Chemdyes Ltd.). The fact that local German club had been in existence for a number of years and yet there was never such a great ‘celebration’ of its anniversary should have given the public the insight into the real reasons for this gathering, at a time when the political situation of the East as well as the West was in the melting pot and that all aliens in India were being registered. After the exposure of previous Nazi conferences on board German ships in the Bombay harbour, the Nazis thought it unwise to celebrate their anniversary of the Deutsche Club in one of the Nazi ships. Thus, the conference was held at the residence of one local Nazi. The following subjects discussed at the meeting; (1) the world boycott of
German goods and its effect on German trade in India; (2) The activities of the anti-Nazi League of India and how best to counter it; (3) What the Germans in India should do in case of war either in the East or West; (4) How to exploit the antiBritish feeling of the Indian people for furtherance of German and Nazi influence in India; (5) Advisability of making direct contact with antiBritish organisations and persons in India in order to press for India’s political emancipation in case of British becoming hostile to Germans in Europe. The meeting decided that all Nazis should try and obtain a list of Germans, Aryans or Jews who either participate with the anti-Nazi league or witness the film ‘Confessions of a Nazi Spy’ which was being shown at that time at the Excelsior Theatre. The financial subcommittee of the Nazi party approved of the expense of a large sum of money equivalent to Rs. 100,000 for that year’s party budget in India.

While discussing the political situation and its effect on India, the Nazis decided that though their interests were not all together identical with those of the Japanese in the East, at least for the sake of discipline and unity of action, the Nazi should, as far as possible, combine with the Japanese ‘forces’ working in India because under the garb of the anti-Comintern front, it was possible for both the countries to counteract communist and democratic influence in India. For this purpose the meeting decided that all newspapers and publications which were pro-Nazi should be encouraged to publish articles and photographs with a view to show to the Indian people that the Soviet Russia was not a greater power and that it was a demoralised country which was at a point of a counter revolution. The conference discussed at great length the Nazi and Japanese influence in Afghanistan and how that country could be used as a base in case the British Indian authorities took a militant attitude towards the
Nazis and the Fascists. Apparently, the aim of the Nazis was to make India a liability for the British in case of British taking part in a war against the totalitarian countries and for this move Afghanistan and Tibet were calculated to be the base for all fascist operations. The Japanese were spending large sums of money in Afghanistan. Japan hoped to make trouble for British in India if they refused to recognise the ‘new order’ established by the Japanese in the East and to further this they were planning to send the notorious ‘Lawrence of Japan’ General Kenji Doihara to Tibet, from where he was expected to visit Chinese Turkestan and later the Afghans and the Northwest frontier tribes would be contacted. The Nazis and the Japanese had decided not to have anything to do with the Indian National Congress which in their view was too much of a ‘leftist’ and pro-British organisation hence, they decided to further their contacts with all the
63 Veez Illustrated Weekly
communal and sectional organisations which were anti Congress and anti-British. It is paradoxical but true that while on the one hand Nazism had adherence among the Hindu communalists, it had also made considerable progress among the Muslim communalists. The Nazis used the Palestine issue in India as in other Muslim countries to win the support of the Muslims. The Muslims of India naturally had strong sympathies for the Arabs and the Nazi agents had cleverly exploited this to create anti-Jewish sentiment which till then was not so prominent. At one of the sessions of the All India Muslim League for the first time, a professor who taught German at the Aligarh Muslim University made anti-Jewish speeches. Incidentally, he was also one of the old ‘revolutionaries’ who had been in exile for a couple of decades and was living in Germany from where he returned to India with his German wife. The anti-
Jewish feeling was carefully fostered to present Hitler and the Nazis as friends of the Muslims. The role of Mussolini as ‘protector of Islam’ in Africa and the similar role, which Japan presumed to play in China, were also emphasised as a factor for enlisting Indian Muslims’ support for international fascism. According to T.K. Menon many vernacular newspapers in Bombay and Maharashtra belonging to the Hindu Maha Sabha fold were openly preaching National Socialism for India and a Hindu Fuehrer on the model of Hitler. Their choice was
V.D. Savarkar who had sent a cable to Hitler congratulating him for the magnificent reply to President
64 Veez Illustrated Weekly
Roosevelt. The Nazis were spreading the myth that the Hindus that they were the custodians of the Indian Nation while the Muslims and the other communities were aliens like the Jews of Germany. They also highlighted the Nazi symbol Swastika and the Aryan race theory. However, it is interesting to note that the same Nazis were preaching an entirely different version to the Muslims in north India who were praised for their martial tendencies and their sentiments were tickled on the Palestine and frontier questions. But to both Hindus and Muslims, the Nazis appeared as anti-Christian and anti-Semitic and the enemies of British and democracy. The Gandhian creed of non-violence was ridiculed as a non-practical and visionary theory which would further enslave India. It was observed that a group of Indians knowing Arabic, Persian and German languages were invited to the local German club for a ‘social’ which was attended by Nazis like Dr.
Urchs, Oswald Zimmer and few others. Those Indians who were present were mostly men employed in city’s educational institutions for imparting knowledge of foreign literature and language. The Nazis had many of their men teaching German to Indian students. In a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Bombay, the honorary secretary of the Anti-Nazi League informed that an anti-Nazi poster would be distributed in different cities of India. The format and matter used in the poster was received through the Empire Unity League, High Holborn, London. Similar posters had been printed and distributed in England. In Bombay the poster was printed at the Times of India press. However, the name of the press was not printed in the poster. An issue of the London Daily Mirror published a facsimile of the poster. The poster was entitled “Wanted! Dead or Alive! Reward Rs.50,000. ADOLPH HITLER, FOR MURDER.

The director of FMCI, Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho welcomed the gathering which was followed by blessing of the instruments and premise by the bishop. Oxygen plant and manifold unit
This saying may not find it true in the life of saints and layperson where we talk only good of the dead. Fr Augustus Muller laid his life for the sick, poor and the needy, sacrificing his life for the sake of good and thus every person should attain the good
Due to the COVID pandemic the necessity for self-produced oxygen was felt. This was moreover made mandatory by the National Medial Council for Medical Education to have a functional oxygen generating plant in every medical college hospital. The new oxygen plant therefore was envisaged by the management and thus the best of companies were selected for the final tender. The
79 Veez Illustrated Weekly
oxygen generator imported from Milan, Italy has a capacity of generating 586Ltr oxygen per minute with storage of 400 ltr of gaseous oxygen. This is in addition to the already existing 20,000 ltr medical liquid oxygen storage units in the hospital. The manifold unit has been shifted for convenience purpose and helps deliver mixed air or different gases to the required stations for patient care. This has been modified and recalibrated to help maintain excellent quality of airflow and prevent wastage. The cost of the oxygen unit solely spent by the management is estimated to 80 lac. Additional MICU The Father Muller Medical College Hospital has been in the forefront of healthcare in the coastal region and has been catering in specialized ICU care, which has been sought after by patients. The existing Medical Intensive Care Unit had occupancy of 20 beds but due to the continuous demand by patients and well-wishers the governing committee of FMCI decided to add another 20 beds to the hospital. The new MICU unit
situated in the 1st Floor of the hospital block has been carved out of the existing ward and given a complete makeover. The MICU has been made patient and medic friendly with designated areas for receiving and transit of patients. The dedicated ICU facilities of the Father Muller Medical College Hospital like Medical, Surgical, Paediatric, Neonatal, Burns, Casualty, Oncology, Cardiac, HDU amount to over 110 beds and with the addition of 20 MICU beds totals 130 ICU beds. The inaugural and blessings were attended by the management committee members, faculty and staff. The vote of thanks was delivered by Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, administrator FMMCH. The works of the plant and MICU was meticulously overseen by Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator FMMC and assisted by Fr George Jeevan Sequeira and Fr Nelson Deeraj Pais, assistant administrators FMMCH.
