Also in borderland for Kasaragodu, School and College Students countless literary and cultural programs held. The list goes on and on. This is what his wife Anitha says about Chinna: Borderland people have one advantage. They learn several languages, my hometown is Kanjangad’s Hosadurga. I know Kerala’s Malayalam and also Karnataka’s Kannada. Our home language is Konkani. I studied everything in Malayalam Medium. I also married a man who is fluent in Malayalam and Konkani. Aftrer my marriage, he forced me to learn Kannada. He is an activist of Kannada. Amongst our two children, our son was sent to Kannada Medium. Daughter had one Kannada subject. So, I learned Kannada while teaching them studies. Then I managed teach Kannada to my kids. Now I am reading Kannada papers. All this hapopened because of my husband’s inspiration.

32 Veez Illustrated Weekly

I didn’t know that we knew several languages for a long time. When people from various places came to our house and told me that. Then I realized that, yes, we know more than one languages. He is fond of Kannada. Hope you know his name, Srinivas Rao, Entire neighborhood used to call him Chinna Chinna and this name Chinna became permanent for him. Now everybody knows who is Kasaragodu Chinna. He doesn’t speak much and also shows less interest in business; but he has quite a few friends as he likes more friends. Many are coming home. He only pushes me to go out to attend programs. I learned to mix with people and speak to them from him. At my mom’s place all are calling me as Anitha. My husband’s houls my name changed to Shanthi. “After you came to his house peace entered the house dear” often my husband says making fun of me. We were 5 girls. Our family was traditional one. My Dad Narayana Kamath and my Mom Shanta. We too business people to run our family. So we never had a habit

watch dramas or act in dramas. I knew nothing about stage and I married a man who is just about everything for stage. One way it worked out pretty well, I learned about a person who is well versed in Drama, Cinema, Literature and activist. I learned about a new life after our marriage. He never neglected home responsibilities. To run a family, activism, plays, literature, cinema not going to help anybody. We have a shop to run and feed ourselves. When he leaves the house for rehearsal-shooting, I take care of the shop’s responsibility. Some years back he produced Lorry Plays you might be knowing. Saturday-Sunday he will climb the lorry and visit place to place to play lorry natak. Once he went from here to Bangaluru. Rest of the days if he goes out, I take full responsibility of our shop. We have 3 employees in our shop. Very trustworthy employees, so our job becomes much easier because of their help. Sunday is a holiday for our shop. He never home on Sundays. He always has a some or other programs.

33 Veez Illustrated Weekly

When he was a President of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akacemy, he was running everywhere. Those days he didn’t care about the shop. This was a huge question for me. He was very busy arranging various Konkani programs for it’s development. I never watched his several plays. I liked ‘Aylore Aylo’ Konkani drama. I very much liked ‘Drushti’ Kannada play. I am happy watching Movies too. He likes writing plays, acting, direction, etc. Once when he went produce 3 plays in Kasaragodu simulstaneously, showed black flag. When police arrested them I was scared. They did it to fulfill their politics thought our CM. Then the CM realized to true issue. Right away District students received Kannada text books. He came home from the jail and explained what happened. He couldn’t find any black flags so he bought a black lungi it seems. When I heard this, I couldn’t control my laugh. He want to fight nonstop when he want to fight for a cause. He took

his Nayibaala drama from Kasaragodu to Bengaluru on a lorry to show his voice against corruption. From the house of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai to Bengaluru he held Saneetaratha. Parthisuran place Kumble to Bengaluru he organized Yakshatheru and raised his voice for artists. Also performed Mookanatak in Gulf countries. This was a new record and it is done by only one Indian, that’s my husband. One in a while we fight each othr and this is countless. He want everything neat all the time. If he cannot find his reading or writing material, he gets mad at me. Then he says “don’t worry OK?” just to polish me. When he gets more mad, I prepare fish and make saar. This is his favorite; then his anger cools off. We have a Padmagiri Kuteera stage hall above our house. So when the guests come, food is from us. I too feel good to prepare and feed them food. Sometime I think, he can’t sleep if he cannot produce Kannada programs? Through Rangachinna

34 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Trust, he produced programs. Taught Kannada Nadageete to five thousand students from Kasaragodu. 30 best stories of Kannada he translated to Konkani. This book got an award from Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademy. Hundreds of awards he received from various places. When I look at it,, people recognize his efforts and I too feel happy.

etc. Now I too started following him.,,,,,, Wow, what a lovely words about her husband Chinna, Anitha wrote! When I asked Chinna what’s his wife is doing? He serves her husband was his sweet reply. Truly this couple with few fights and plenty of love are shining like stars on Konkani – Kannada skies.

Kasargod Chinna is not a person, he is an institution of languages. He Now daughter got married. Son has does so much for Konkani and a good job. Now he is going Kannada, it is unimaginable. Veez forward with his activism, writing, prays that may God Almighty bless acting, directing, producing, etc., this family and keep them healthy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For details about the book and authors click: Insights into Colonial Goa. The post-monsoon season plying of boats to meet the pent-up produces a flawless sky, which highlights the verdant fields on sundappled mornings. The landscape could serve as an inspiration for a Renoir-like painting of whitewashed churches and temples against emerald-green paddy fields, trees laden with a variety of fruits, and stream of gently flowing water in the foreground of the impressionistic art. Or the scene may feature the Milky Way in a moonlit sky outlining palm trees, and frothy waves curling near the shore. The end of the monsoon season signals the beginning of the

demand for transportation along the coast. Not long after the Portuguese acquired Bassein, a chess game involving different competitors was being played along the Maratha coast. The English had their headquarters in Surat but were vying to take control of Bombay, which had a much-prized safe, natural harbor. During the middle of the 17th century, the Dutch operated a strong presence in the Arabian Sea and posed a challenge to both the Portuguese and English.

42 Veez Illustrated Weekly

The first blockade of Goa by the Dutch occurred in 1623. The marriage of the Portuguese princess Catherine Braganza, daughter of King John IV, to the British King Charles II on May 11, 1661, forged a convenient Lisbon-London alliance. For mutual security, the Iberians gave the island of Bombay to the English as part of the princess’ dowry, though the exact location of the island was not defined in the treaty. After much foot-dragging and haggling in 1665, the English got a toehold on the southern island of Bombay. Three years later, King Charles rented the island to the English East India Company for the princely annual rent of ten pounds payable in gold. The island’s population grew exponentially. When the Portuguese were in control, the islands included only a few fishing villages; the residents numbered approximately 10,000 in 1661 when the English king acquired the land; when the East Company assimilated it into their territory in 1668, there were 15,600 inhabitants; a decade later, a census

would have registered people in the area.

Besides the Portuguese and the English, the region, especially the Bombay islands, were also coveted by the sultans of Gujarat and Ahmednagar, the Moghuls, the Siddhis, the Dutch, and the Marathas. All these groups periodically attacked and destabilized the area. Even during these skirmishes, trading was briskly carried out with the help of various forms of transportation -- Indian patmars, Arab dhows, and Chinese junks. However, all maritime trade halted during the monsoon season. In addition to trade, scores of pilgrims traveled by boat to Mecca to participate in the Haj; unfortunately, that voyage also attracted pirates. The strongest naval power at any given time governed the sea lanes and maintained the peace. The Bombay Presidency was gaining importance over the presidencies of Madras and Calcutta. This was mainly because one of Bombay’s major roles was

monitoring the maritime safety in the Arabian Sea, especially the traffic along the sea route (including those used by the Haj pilgrims) from India to the Mideast, Africa, and Europe (and the Suez Canal after it opened). It was just a matter of time before the English Trading Company consolidated its hold on the island of Bon Bahia, later called Bombay, and extended the company’s rule over other nearby Iberian enclaves across the creek to Bandra, etc. In 1687, the East India Company relocated its western headquarters from Surat to Bombay, which served as the center of the Raj’s Bombay Presidency.

(1794-1886) is beyond the scope of this article. Readers interested in this topic should refer to the excellent publication: The Making of Mumbai – A History of the Metropolis and its Catholic Past by Fr. Benny Aguiar, the long-time editor of the weekly Examiner magazine in Bombay. Iberians held sway over the region north of Bombay for 205 years before losing it to the Marathas in 1737. Under English rule, other missions were also welcomed in Bombay in the 1800s. These were affiliated with Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, and Parsi religious institutions. But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Between 1534 to1580, the Iberians built four main churches in Bombay: St. Michael’s (Mahim), St. John the Baptist (Andheri), St. Andrew (Bandra), and Gloria Church (initially built in Mazagon in 1548 and then rebuilt in Byculla in 1632). These churches are still in existence and have historical significance. A history of the religious jurisdiction of these institutions in Bombay

Bassein was the center of the "Corte do Norte" or "Provincia do Norte" and, under Portuguese rule, it thrived as a fertile agricultural area as well as a resort town for noblemen and rich merchants. Bassein was the capital of the north coastal territories and was equipped with a fort to protect the region, and had the mint for the eastern empire. The Franciscans were given the

44 Veez Illustrated Weekly

primary responsibility for the Province of the North, and in 1573, the Jesuits were put in charge of the regions of Bandra and Kurla. Both these religious orders operated under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Goa. Most of the natives of these regions were converted to Christianity by Franciscans, whose headquarters was located in Bassein’s Fort San Sebastian. The social and spiritual needs of the 16,000-strong, vibrant Christian community were served by nine churches as well as several monasteries, orphanages, schools, and colleges. The PortugueseChristians lived primarily in the city of Mumbai (Bombay), and smaller populations in portions of Raigad (Chaul), Palghar (Bassein), Thane (Thana), Salsette, Kolaba, and districts of the Konkan (now in the state of Maharashtra). These communities were later ministered to by the Bishop of Daman, who also served as the spiritual shepherd of the faithful in Surat and Diu. The double jurisdiction over Bombay was a source of confusion, to put it

mildly, for the British colonial authorities, who were uncertain about the loyalty of the Goan priests and their congregations. This may explain why the British preferred hiring Goans for jobs outside the Bombay Presidency and chose East Indians for employment within Bombay and its surrounding areas.

Before we move away from the topic of Provincia do Norte, it must be noted that under Iberian rule and trade, the native agricultural focus shifted from subsistence farming to agri-business; which made this their most profitable possession. Commercial farming, which was practiced between the 16th and 18th centuries, did not lead to any biodiversity crises, the kind that we experience today. For example, the land was not subjected to deforestation or the loss of critical wildlife habitats, which result in the displacement of animals. Farmers did not practice mono-cropping (repeatedly growing a single crop on the same land), a form of farming which depletes the soil of essential

45 Veez Illustrated Weekly

nutrients and leaves the crops susceptible to disease and insect infestation. These destructive pestilences demand the use of fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides, which further pollute the environment and harm wildlife. In addition, spices were grown on land on which diverse crops and trees were planted – a pattern of farming which boosts carbon sequestration and water regulation. This system resulted in the preservation of wildlife habitat and was conducive to the propagation of insects, birds, reptiles, butterflies, bats, amphibians, and mammals. Nature therefore did not pay a high biological price for the human harvesting of its bounty. The biodiversity the farmers preserved and maintained the variety of species, genes, habitats, as well as human cultural mixture, which in turn was passed down from one generation to the next. Example: people who successfully dealt with wars, colonization, and natural disasters transferred these survival skills to their progeny.

The prosperity of Provincia do Norte was reflected in the strong agricultural and artisan economies of Vasai-Virar, Salsette, Thana, Kalyan, and Chaul regions. Clearly, the farmers had transitioned from subsistence farming to methods that guaranteed the maximum productivity of crops and labor, as well as efficient husbandry of the fertile terrain. The province rightly boasted about producing booming towns, where wealth poured in from lucrative maritime trade. Over time, successive generations of colonizers elected different preferences, priorities with moral decay. Settlers chose to feather their own nests instead of putting their shoulders to the wheel for the benefit of the common good. Others resorted to coastal piracy, extortions, profiteering, and curry favor with the chief by flattery and bribes to pursue their own agenda. At times, the vagaries of the monsoons, cyclones, epidemics, and wars contributed to make the enclave a less than prosperous region. (To be continued) ***

Marriage and compatibility half a century ago Marriage in recent times is an equation of equanimity and balance, unlike in the 21st century. Good and bad times used to be the hallmark of successful marriages. Weddings in India vary according to the region, the religion, the community and the personal preferences of the bride and groom. They are festive occasions in India, and in most cases celebrated with extensive decorations, colour, dresses, music, dance, costumes and rituals that depend on the community, region and religion of the bride and the groom, as well as their preferences. India celebrates about 10 million weddings per year, of which about 80% are Hindu weddings. Recently my friends drew my attention to a Simple GSB couple in Urwa celebrating completion of their 50 Golden years of married life. Take a look at this

exemplary simple couple who have lived a God fearing life and brought up four children in the best tradition of the times, who worked at service oriented jobs and served the people around them and those whom they came in contact with day to day. These are the very kind of people who cross our lives daily and provide us direction, inspiration and reality. There are numerous episodes in their life that have contributed to good for ordinary people but those can be well pictured by what readers have come across in their own lives and nurture the goodness to blessings.

Example of a 'Kodial Konkani' couple: This particular Mangaluru 'Amchigele' GSB couple who has lived and contributed to the

Christ is Risen! Alleluia! It is Easter! Christ is risen! Alleluia! In the Apostles’ Creed we recite: “On the third day he (Jesus) rose again from the dead”. The Resurrection of Christ is the cornerstone of Christian faith. St. Augustine affirms emphatically: “The faith of Christians is the resurrection of Christ. It is no great thing to believe that Jesus died; even the pagans believe this, everyone believes it. The truly great thing is to believe that he is risen.” If we do not believe in the resurrection of Christ, our faith is in vain. Belief in the death and

resurrection of Christ is the foundation of Christianity. Perhaps the oldest written testimony to the Resurrection of Christ comes from St. Paul: “For I delivered to you first of all that what I also received: that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again, according to the Scriptures; and that he was seen by Cephas, and after that by the eleven. Then he was seen by more than 500 brothers at once, of whom many are still with us and some are fallen

53 Veez Illustrated Weekly

asleep. After that, he was seen by James, then by all the apostles. And last of all, he was seen also by me, as by one born out of due time.” (1Cor. 15: 3-8) The core of the testimony whether of Paul, the Evangelists or Mary Magdalene is the same: The Lord is risen and was seen alive. While the empty tomb bears witness to the fact of resurrection, the appearances of the Risen Lord to various people as mentioned in the New Testament are the decisive facts. Mary Magdalene was the first one to see the Risen Lord and ran to announce to his disciples “I have seen the Lord” (Jn. 20:18). Affirming firmly the historical fact of the resurrection of Jesus, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa asks “If Jesus were not risen, and did not appear to his disciples to what purpose would it have been to face persecution and death for him? What material benefit would they have drawn from it?” Furthermore, Cardinal Cantalamessa reminds us: “It is not enough to observe matters historically. It is necessary to see the

Risen Christ, and this is something history cannot do; only faith can.” Life changes, people are converted only when there is a personal encounter with Jesus. Whether it is Mary Magdalene, Saul of Tarsus, Zacchaeus, or any other person, it is their personal encounter with the Lord that made them to change their life style and follow Jesus and proclaim his good news. Every disciple of Christ must have this personal encounter with the Risen Lord. What gives ardour, zeal and passion for spreading the good news of salvation, like St. Paul and other Apostles is that personal encounter with Jesus. Many of us lack missionary zeal because we do not really encounter the Lord. Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. But it is not just the commemoration of a 2000year-old historical event. The Risen Lord is alive and is seen and experienced even today. The good news of Easter is that we do not have to wait until we die to share in the power of the resurrection, for Jesus said: “Truly, truly, I say to you

whoever believes has eternal life…. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (Jn. 6: 47,54). Therefore, it is not just a future possibility, but a present reality. What begins here on earth because of one’s faith and divine grace is experienced in its fullness in heaven. What is experienced sacramentally here on earth will be experienced in reality in heaven. Explaining what Easter is all about Mark Link puts it so well: “Easter invites us to let Jesus help us trust once again, after we have had our trust betrayed. It invites us to let Jesus help us love once again, after we have had our love rejected. It invites us to let Jesus help us hope once again, after we have had our hope destroyed to pieces. It invites us to let Jesus help us pick up the broken pieces and start over again after we were ready to give up. This is what Easter is all about. It’s the good news that the risen Jesus is in our midst right now…… It’s the good news that nothing can destroy us any more – not pain, not sorrow, not rejection, not sin, not even death

itself.” That is what Easter is all about. That is the power of resurrection. Let us experience it. Let us rejoice in it. Due to Covid-19 pandemic many of us have gone through untold sufferings, pain, sorrow, loneliness, isolation and loss of dear ones. That was our share in the Passion of Christ. That was our Good Friday. But we know for sure that after Good Friday, Easter does come. In fact, it is essential that we share in the passion of Christ in order to share in the resurrection and glory of the Risen Lord. Let us live in hope knowing that one day the pandemic will end and we will be able to lead normal life. I wish all of you all the blessings of the Risen Lord especially, hope, love, joy peace and life in the Risen Lord. Happy Easter!

The Significance of the Seventh of April! World Health Day: universally accepted and recognised as acknowledgement that one’s good health does matter! The theme this year is ‘Our Planet, Our Health’. That says it all! We are gripped today by the current pandemic (we have not yet seen the last of it), a -Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ April 7 is a significant day! This day is pregnant with meaning: it brings to mind the hate, violence and suffering that has enveloped our world; however, at the same time, it reminds us that all is not lost: the human spirit, despite all the setbacks, can never be broken! There is still hope, resilience and love. These need to retain their preeminence in our world today! These should not only remain as indicators, but should be internalised and mainstreamed to help make our world a more loving, peaceful, inclusive and healthy one for all!

terribly polluted planet and the ever-increasing incidence of diseases. The theme invites us all to pledge and work towards a healthier planet! It is also a call to look into endemic issues and to have the courage to address them. Band-aid or cosmetic responses to

56 Veez Illustrated Weekly

the destruction of the environment which makes our planet unhealthy, do not help in the long run. In fact, tokenism aggravates the situation. Recently at a public meeting in Goa, it was demonstrated with incontrovertible evidence, of how Goa will soon be covered in a cloud of coal- dust if matters are not addressed head long in the here and now. The ruling regime in India with their crony capitalist friends are systematically destroying the environment. There will be disastrous consequences on the health of millions – particularly on the poor and the marginalised. Air pollution, contaminated water, inadequate sanitation including solid waste management, risks related to certain hazardous chemicals, the unmitigated use of fossil fuels and negative impacts of climate change are the most pressing environmental public health threats in India. The WHO estimates that more than thirteen million deaths around the world each year are due to environmental causes which are avoidable. This includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat

facing humanity. These threats to public health (as we see in India) are compounded by corrupt, weak governance practices and potential inequities in health as well as by limited leadership, expertise, and resources in the health sector.

Rwandan Genocide: which began on 7 April 1994 and lasted for hundred days till 15 July that year, will forever be an unforgettable blot in world history! It was a crime against humanity! It was estimated that more than 800,000 from the Tutsi minority ethnic group (besides some others like moderate Hutus and Twa) were killed by armed militia, police and military. The anniversary of this genocide is observed annually as the ‘International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.’ The genocide had lasting and profound effects not only in Rwanda but in neighbouring countries like Congo too.

57 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Rwanda however has come a long way. Today the ‘genocidal ideology’ and ‘divisionism’ are regarded as criminal offences. A programme ‘Ndi Umunyarwanda’ (meaning, ‘I am Rwandan’) has been officially launched. It is a programme initiated to build a national identity based on trust and dignity. Its major aim is to strengthen unity and reconciliation among Rwandans by providing a forum for people to talk about causes and consequences of the genocide as well as what it means to be Rwandan. The world has much to learn from this initiative. We witness what is happening in Ukraine, Palestine, Myanmar and in several other countries today. India too has much to learn – given the fact that hate, divisiveness and violence are institutionalised. The ruling regime has learnt nothing from the Gujarat Genocide of 2002; in fact, the architects of those bloody days today rule the country. The prestigious and highly objective ‘Genocide Watch’ (www.genocidewatch.com )in its December 2021, regards the situation in India as a ‘genocidal emergency’. They give far reaching recommendations which

need to be acted upon to prevent large-scale genocide in India. Fr. Frans Van der Lugt, the

Dutch Jesuit was killed in Homs Syria on 7 April 2014. ‘Abouna Frans’ as he was lovingly called by all those who knew him, was special: he was a complete human being. He was warm and compassionate; to the youth, he was an inspirer and motivator, who never tired of long walks and hikes; to the elderly, he was a friend and mentor; the little children loved to cling to his long legs; for Muslims, Christians and non-believers, he was a bridge-builder, a person who could draw the best out of them; for the spiritually weak and lost, he was a source of strength and a patient listener. He was a true shepherd, always in the midst of his sheep and who smelled of them. He had the courage of his convictions and he communicated this

58 Veez Illustrated Weekly

unequivocally. He was a healer who loved nature. He ensured that everyone: Muslim and Christian; old and young were welcome at the Jesuit Centre where he lived in Boustan-Diwan (the inner city) Homs. He lived among his people; took a visible and vocal stand for them and ultimately, he had to pay the price! Abouna Frans was gunned down just three days before what would have been his 76th birthday. Today both Muslims and Christians revere Abouna Frans as a Saint. They will never forget his words “the Syrian people have given me so much, so much kindness, inspiration and everything they have. If the Syrian people are suffering now, I want to share their pain and their difficulties”. This he did in full measure: he lived with them, he died for them. He once said, “I don’t see Muslims or Christians; I see above all, human beings”. An apt summary of his humaneness. St Francis Xavier, originally from Navarre Spain, was born on 7 April 1506. Coming from the noble family of Xavier which was fairly

well-to-do, he had the world at his feet. Besides he was a brilliant student who distinguished himself academically and won laurels on the sports field. He, however, gave up everything to join Ignatius of Loyola in founding the Society of Jesus. As a Jesuit he travelled to India where among other things he brought education to those who did not have access to it. His mortal remains, still remain fairly uncorrupted, in the Bom Jesu Church in Goa. Millions of Indians and others pray to him. The word ‘Xavier’ today is synonymous with ‘excellence in education’ today. Xavier

institutions run by the Jesuits in India (and in other parts of the world) cater to the wholistic development of the students, grooming them in every possible way to become men and women for others- and internalising the values enshrined in the Gospel of Jesus and in the Constitution of India! Though April 7, reminds us of pain and suffering, the culture of violence and of death – it also provides us with newer opportunities and of hope. In his encyclical, ‘Fratelli Tutti’ Pope Francis says, “I invite everyone to renewed hope, for hope “speaks to us of something deeply rooted in every human heart, independently of our circumstances and historical conditioning. Hope speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of fulfilment, a desire to achieve great things, things that fill our heart and lift our spirit to lofty realities like truth, goodness and beauty, justice and love… Hope is bold; it can look beyond personal convenience, the petty securities and compensations which limit our horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals that make life more beautiful and worthwhile”. Let us

continue, then, to advance along the paths of hope”. Yes, 7 April is about health and Rwanda, about Frans and Xavier and much more. The significance and the hope of the day however, is not just for a day but for a lifetime! We need the courage to make our hope for love, peace and good health a reality!

War in Ukraine: Putin’s false Nazi claims (continued) The Story so far from last week:

In his speech declaring war on Ukraine, Putin said the goal of his “special military operation” was the demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine and ridding it of drug addicts. Demilitarization is understandable which means to install a pro-Russian “puppet” in his place. Such a proRussia government will agree to Putin’s terms of amending Ukrainian constitution to include neutrality as state policy as well as renounce building biological,

chemical and nuclear military capabilities. Such a constitutional amendment will also include the renunciation of its democratic right to seek closer integration with Europe, especially the European Union (EU). Further, it would also give up its ambition of joining NATO, the trans-Atlantic military alliance led by the US. What about de-Nazification? A majority of Ukrainians harbor a deep-seated hatred towards Russia who it sees as their oppressors. They blame Stalin’s Soviet Union for Holodomor or Great Famine of the 1930’s which killed an estimated four million people. Ukrainians view Holodomor as Russian genocide against them. Hence, when Nazi Germany invaded Ukraine SSR during the WWII, most Ukrainians saw them as liberators

61 Veez Illustrated Weekly

from Soviet oppression. Some joined the Nazis and fought the Soviet Army. Stepan Bandera, the Ukrainian nationalist who fought for independence of Ukraine, was one of them. Bandera and his followers came to be associated with Nazis who committed atrocities against Russians, Jews, and Poles, murdering as many as 100,000 people. In 2015, Ukraine passed a decommunization law under which soviet monuments were removed from public places. Streets were renamed after Ukrainian historical figures, including Bandera and Roman Shushkevich, Bandera’s second-in-command. Russians portray this move as Ukraine reverting to its natural state of being neo-Nazi. Is there a neo-Nazi problem in Ukraine? Today, Ukraine is a vibrant multiparty democracy under a westerntyle constitution. In the 2019 presidential elections, 73% of the country voted to elect a Jewish

president, Volodymyr Zelensky. Another Jew, Volodymyr Groysman was elected Prime Minister in 2016 and he served for three and a half years. Ukraine must be the only country outside Israel to have both Jewish head of state and head of government. And the Russian propaganda labels Ukrainians as neo-Nazis! Volodymyr Groysman, as Ukrainian Prime minister, addressing Israel’s Knesset in 2016, apologized to the Jewish people for the role Ukrainian Nazi collaborators played in executing 33,000 Jews during 1941. Neo-Nazis don’t apologize like that. Since breaking free from the Soviet Iron Curtain, Ukraine has struggled a lot to develop democratic institutions: constitutional democracy based on universal franchise, free elections, due

62 Veez Illustrated Weekly

process, the rule of law, freedom of speech and a free press. Ukraine’s free press environment has been abused by the Kremlin as a destructive tool of their propagandist disinformation. A key theme of Kremlin propaganda is the idea that Ukraine does not exist as an independent state, or that it does not have the right to exist. Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition party leader in Ukrainian parliament is a key promoter of this message. He is Vladimir Putin’s main ally in Ukraine. Putin and Medvedchuk are related. of Medvedchuk’s youngest daughter is God-child of Putin. Viktor Medvedchuk owns by proxy three TV channels: 112 Ukraine, NewsOne, and ZIK. These Ukrainian TV channels have been relentlessly transmitting Putin’s propaganda to Ukrainian audiences for some time. It is reported that the money for these channels comes from illegal coal exports from Russian occupied Donbas region. A year ago, President Zelensky approved a decision to block these channels after much patience. This

was his administration’s direct response to those who abuse freedom of speech and turn it against democracy. It is a reminder that democracies must learn how to defend themselves or risk being destroyed by those who exploit democratic principles in order to achieve undemocratic goals. Let us compare this to the scenario in Russia. Today in Russia, people are put in jail not just for speaking against this war but for simply calling this “special operation” in Ukraine a war. Participating in a peaceful demonstration or posting a picture of killed Ukrainian civilians on social media will also land you in jail. And then there is freedom of the press, which dies without freedom of speech. This is exactly what has happened in Russia. Propaganda coupled with the dismantling of the free press has created a weapon of mass distraction. This combination is incredibly dangerous; it gives a dictatorial government unlimited power over the mind of its people. It allows government to precisely

63 Veez Illustrated Weekly

control what people think and thus provides an almost unlimited carte blanche for government actions. This is what allowed the unthinkable and barbaric war against Ukraine. Propaganda strips away all independent thinking, turning people into mindless zombies. Propaganda works by causing our right brain to overwhelm our left one. The more you “think” with your right brain, the less thinking you do. Over time, emotions evoked by propaganda prevent you from objectively analyzing the subject at hand. You have a hard time telling what is true and what is not. Over time, peer pressure sets in, and it is hard to be the only enlightened one. This is how people get zombified. Russians are zombified by Putin’s propaganda about Ukraine and neo-Nazis in Ukraine. Ukraine’s fault is that it is a budding democracy right next to a shriveling, dictatorial ex-empire. Putin could not live with the fact that a democracy next door, a country that did not want to live under his thumb, also wanted to embrace

Western values. It also dared to attempt to prosper while the exempire under his rule became almost irrelevant with each passing day. The dictator next door needed an excuse to invade Ukraine. The nonexistent threat of NATO seemed like a good excuse. But it was not enough justification for starting a war and killing “brotherly” people who look like his own population; who profess his own religion; most of who are bilingual; who speak Russian as second language. He had to dehumanize the people he was about to kill. He convinced his populace that by his bombing cities and killing Ukrainians by the thousands, the Russian Army was doing God’s work and de-Nazifying the country. Ukraine is home to ultranationalist movements, including most prominently the Azov Battalion, which formed in 2014 and later joined the country's National Guard after fighting against Russianbacked forces in eastern Ukraine. But nationalists make up about 2%

64 Veez Illustrated Weekly

of Ukraine's population, with the vast majority having very little interest in anything to do with them. The U.S. probably has a higher percentage of white supremacist and Nazi groups. Ukraine has a smaller contingency of right-wing groups than other Western countries. President Putin has made clear his disdain of people who use drugs, most recently accusing Ukrainian leaders of being a “gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis”. In 2011, Russia declared “total war” on the country’s drug problem. It is difficult to source reliable estimates of how many Russians now have problems with drugs, though recent analysis of debates held in the Russian parliament between 2014 and 2018 suggest about 8 million Russians use drugs regularly. This compares with 6 million in 2011. It is not clear what proportion depends on or needs treatment. An increasing number of Russians have developed problems with drugs such as heroin, with estimates that 3 million Russians are injecting

drugs. Many of these people don’t have access to harm-reduction services such as needle and syringe exchange schemes. Without these, the risk of contracting HIV and other blood-borne viruses is increased. Russia is also the only country among the 47 member states of the Council of Europe that prohibits opioid substitution therapy. Russia’s domestic drug policy has been counterproductive in fueling disease spread, stigma and human rights abuses. There is no doubt that people who use drugs are vulnerable during conflicts, and those risks are amplified considerably when an invasion is orchestrated by a president who has complete contempt for them. Substance abuse has been rising for the last 15 years in Ukraine. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is estimated to be responsible for about 10% of the total disease burden within Ukraine. There is no prohibition in Ukraine. Drinking and smoking in public places, however, is prohibited by law. In comparison, Russia has a higher problem of

65 Veez Illustrated Weekly

drinking and alcohol abuse. An estimate of Russian population addicted to alcohol is about 38%. It is not uncommon to find Russians in inebriated state at not-so-private places. Opium poppy straw extract continues to be the main drug of choice in Ukraine. Marijuana is growing in popularity among young people and use of synthetic drugs is appearing with increasing frequency. From the beginning of the 1990’s the numbers of drug dependent grow annually by about 10%, 27% of them are adults, 60% are teenagers and 13% are children, aged from 11 to 14 years. Drug addicts, aged 2030 years, are becoming a prevailing category of users, and this is a distinguishing feature in recent years, which corresponds with the general European tendency. The corresponding figures for Russia are unavailable or untrustworthy for the simple reason that drugs consumption in Russia is illegal where as Ukraine has a more accommodating legal stance

towards soft drugs. In Ukraine, drug addiction treatment includes giving addicts methadone to ease them off street drugs such as heroin. There are more than 1,300 such patients registered in Kyiv alone. Russia, on the other hand, does not accept methadone as a treatment, instead seeing it as just another noxious narcotic.

When Russian forces annexed Crimea in 2014, they shut methadone clinics. Addicts reverted back to heroin and within a year, out of approximately 800 registered methadone patients, at least 80 people had fatally overdosed, killed themselves or died of other narcotic causes. In the Russian-occupied self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, drug addicts are forced to dig trenches at

gunpoint. Drug dealers are summarily executed without due process of law. In booth Russia and its occupied territories, the ban on drugs have driven the business underground with flourishing black markets. Bishop appealed to the students to embrace universal brotherhood. In this context, Dr Saldanha said, ‘Shun the four-walls around your locality, and instead develop universal brotherhood. Growing beyond that would reform the community.’ The newly-appointed judicial magistrate Joyleen Mendonca, Fudar Pratistan® president Gerald D’Costa, Elroy Kiran Crasto, treasurer, Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh® spiritual director Fr Dr J B Saldanha, Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh® president Stany Lobo, Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh® president Mary D’Souza, MCC Bank chairman Anil Lobo Permai and others were present at the dais. Bishop felicitated Joyleen Mendonca who was recently appointed as judicial magistrate during the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr Dr J B Saldanha highlighted the great migration of Mangalorean youth to overseas countries and its impact on their elderly parents back in India. He said, ‘The world is ever changing. Everything gets obsolete in a matter of a few years. The careers that were rosy would become zero in a fast changing world. There are ample opportunities for the community to try for civil service jobs as we have specialized training at St Aloysius Institutions, here. The future lies in exploring entrepreneurship in our native towns and government jobs because nothing is static in overseas countries. The worldwide countries are subject to all kinds of upheavals and epidemics,’ said Fr Saldanha. Gerald D’Costa also stressed on the need for children to take care of their elderly parents as they have done utmost sacrifices in their fruitful years. It’s sickening to see elderly living in old age homes whose children are far away in the US, Canada, New Zealand etc. One can carve out a better future in hometowns, if not the luxurious living of overseas countries that the

First Indian-Mangalore-Goa origin Bishop in the US -Ivan Saldanha-Shet. Mangalore.

USA is getting an unprecedented line of leaders with 'Indian or INDIA' connections and it is an amazing phenomena. Veez readers have seen that the US President Biden himself has an 'India' connection,

not to mention the US VP Ms. Kamala Harris. Many top officials in the US now have strong Indian links and the list runs long. Not to be out done, Pope Francis seems to follow the trend by appointing a first generation Indian-American Rev Fr.

Earl K Fernandes, a Knights of Columbus, on April 2; the announcement was made by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the papal nuncio to the United States. He will be consecrated and installed as the 13th bishop of Columbus (Ohio) on May 31, 2022. An amazing news for Mangaloreans and Goans and Mumbaikars is set to cause a hysteria of joy. Wonderfully, the Bishop-elect Fr.Earl, on the Paternal side has strong roots in Mangalore and on the Maternal side in Goa. On both sides the grandparents moved to Bombay of old in the 1930s it is felt.

New US Bishop-elect Rev Earl K Fernandes : Born on September 21, 1972, in Toledo in Ohio to Sidney Oswald Fernandes and Thelma nee' Noronha, who migrated to the USA from the western Indian metropolis of Mumbai in the early 1970s with two elder sons. Fr Earl has four brothers: Karl, Trevor (who is a Catholic deacon), Ashley, and Eustace. It is recalled that his spiritual formation was fostered by the love of the Christian faith his parents inculcated in him. Earl obtained his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Toledo in 1994 and went on to study physiology at the University of Salford. It was in his second year of medical studies at the University of Cincinnati that he felt the call of the Lord to serve Him. The bishop-elect, who has four siblings, did his priestly formation at Mount Saint Mary’s of the West in Cincinnati and bagged a master’s in Theology in 2002. He attributes his deep faith and vocation to the exemplary prayer life of his mother, a teacher,

and his father, a physician. Indian-American Fr. Earl Fernandes, was ordained on May 18, 2002, for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and two years later he went to Rome to earn a licentiate and doctoral degree in moral theology from the Alphonsian Academy. Fr Earl served as vicar of Holy Angels parish and was a religious teacher at Lehman Catholic High School from 2002 to 2004. Fr. Earl Fernandes, was the dean and assistant professor of moral theology at Mount Saint Mary’s of the West seminary from 2008 to 2016. He served as a member of the executive committee for the National Association of Catholic Theological Schools and was appointed a Missionary of Mercy during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy from 2015 to 2016. He served on the staff of the nunciature for three and a half years. A board of trustees member of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Fr Earl is

fluent in Spanish, Italian and French apart from having a reading knowledge of Latin - both his parents have an old Konkani Catholic background. The diocese, Spread across 11,310 square miles in the state of Ohio, has 207,041 Catholics out of a population of 2,828,514. He will be the first Indian-American bishop of the Latin Church in the United States, and will be the first person of color to serve as the bishop of the Diocese of Columbus, at 49 years, the youngest diocesan bishop in the United States, upon ordination.

Amazing Mangalore-Goa parentage Rev Earl's father is Dr. Sidney Oswald Fernandes (1936-2019) was born in Bombay, graduated from Saint Xavier College in Mumbai and Topiwala Medical School and Nair Hospital in 1965. Dr. Fernandes is originally from Mangalore, and I am being informed traces his roots to Goa about 4-5 generations back. Earl's mother (Thelma nee Noronha) is originally from Aldona, Goa and

was a teacher in Bombay's Catholic schools. Dr. Sidney Fernandes with his wife Thelma and two oldest sons moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1970. He did medical residencies at the Medical College of Ohio in family practice and internal medicine. He maintained a solo medical practice in Oregon, Ohio, for 40 years until retirement. Involved with the Mercy Health System, he was lovingly committed to Mercy Saint Charles Hospital, where he was Chief of Staff in 1988-89. Known for his exceptional care of his patients over the years, he is fondly remembered by their families. The Mangalore Connection : A Goan scholar states he understands Fr Earl's dad Sidney was of Mangalorean origin (grew up in Bombay). He married Thelma Noronha a Goan. Fr Earl Fernandes' paternal grandfather was Ligoury Fernandes (1906-77) of Canara Coffee Works, Fort Mumbai, hailed from Mangalore. Ligoury

79 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Fernandes had six children, Joyce (Sr Hilda), Terence, Sidney, Joan, Brian and Vernon. Referring to some basic Mangalore genealogical information the names of Dr.Sidney and Mrs Thelma's are appearing in a Directory of Mangaloreans in the US. Also, Grandfather Liguory Fermandes is seen under 'Coffee Marketeers' in a detailed directory. Well known Mangalore based genealogist and researcher in his two decade plus old publications, has assigned this family to be of "Fernandes-Shenoy" origin with roots in Nantoor in the city; connections are sure to emerge in due course of time and hopefully people will share their information. Further information that I am fortunate to be privy to indicates that Ligoury Fernandes's parents (Bp Earnest's Great Grandparents) Lawrence & Joanna lived in Nantoor in Mangalore. Great Grandmother Joanna hails from a Machado family of Omzoor. The Mangalore connection may not be too significant for the present

generation of the family proper as the perceptions are different; but here in Mangalore and Mumbai the community has every reason to know, be aware and appreciate. Many connections are sure to be gradually established. Media in general has missed out on this angle, even local media here, it is hoped some interest will be soon generated and more significant information will emerge. In his first public speech Bishopelect Rt Rev Earnest Fernandes said, "This is the land of opportunity, there is a great deal of pride (in being the first Indian-American bishop)." The Ohio native is also the first person of color to lead the Columbus Diocese, and the first Indian-American to be named a Catholic bishop, Deacon Thomas Berg, diocesan chancellor, confirmed. The fourth of five sons born to Indian immigrants in Toledo, Fernandes remembers celebrating the U.S. bicentennial on July 4, 1976, holding signs with his brothers. His father, who

80 Veez Illustrated Weekly

memorized the Constitution before taking his citizenship test, had fashioned together his own version of the Liberty Bell. Rev Fernandes, 49, a self-described "young and happy priest," News of Fernandes'

appointment to bishop comes months after Pope Francis reassigned former Columbus Bishop Robert Brennan to lead the Diocese of Brooklyn. With God all things are possible. *********

The next morning during breakfast, I suddenly remembered reading the one and only McDonald’s in the world having a blueish-green arch on Instagram via @stellareasternfranchising. During our breakfast, I informed my friend about the Mcdonald's. Fortunately, my friend gave me the liberty to plan our trip! The city of Sedona, located in the center of Arizona, is famous for its stunning natural beauty—namely its mountainous landscape of red rock. After the hike over a rocky section, we arrived at the base of a cleft in the rock. The crack rises at a 45degree angle for approximately 40ft. Ample hands and footholds make the ascent manageable. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the top of Cathedral Rock, which was absolutely rewarding. 82 Veez Illustrated Weekly

As I was trying to catch my breath, I was stunned to see a couple with a professional photographer taking their pictures; the girl dressed up in not so fancy wedding dress! Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore diocese, president - Father Muller Charitable Institutions in his presidential address focused on the word ‘empathy’ and how it differs from sympathy. He requested that though it might sound as though a pessimist is speaking, the world knows better of a doctor and a nurse. The loss of empathy has derailed the medical and paramedical profession and thus it is up to the new budding doctors to instill the healing and comforting nature of a true healthcare worker in the minds of the public. 99 Veez Illustrated Weekly

Holy Week Celebration at Milagres Church

We begin our Holy Week celebrations today. With the blessing of the palms and proceeding in procession we remember our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem when people laid palms to welcome him shouting

Hosanna to the king of kings. This week is dear to us Christians for it is in this week we deeply reflect on the love of God shown to us in the passion, death and resurrection of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The foundation to our identity as Christians is laid in this week. While we rejoice in God’s saving grace

104 Veez Illustrated Weekly

through his Son, we are also reminded that of our sinful state of

life. Jesus through his suffering and death on the cross has redeemed us sinners from the bondage of sin and thus freed us once again to become the children of God. The glory once lost in Eden is restored by the unfathomable sacrifice on Calvary. A procession with Jesus carrying the cross and Mary accompanying her Son closely reminds us that we too are an integral part in the journey Christ undertakes for the love of His people. Jesus’ command to His disciples ‘If you wish to be my disciple, take up the cross and follow me’ echoes in every step that we take in following Him. It is a reminder for all of us that unless we die to ourselves, to our comforts, our sins and passions of the world, we cannot rise like Christ. The parishioners of Milagres also began their journey along with the

rest of the church to closely accompany Christ in his final journey to victory. Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, the parish priest of Milagres church Mangalore celebrated the Eucharist and led this procession symbolic of our entry into the Holy Week.

The main motto of the association is to support Konkani writers in their literary works and help their projects in Konkani. The association also encourages the budding writers with various activities, literary competitions and awards. We are happy to facilitate Edie Netto, a senior writer with our first award "

Dr Edward Nazareth, core committee member, introduced Edie Netto to the gathering. "By nature Edie Netto is a straightforward man and never compromises in his ideology and thoughts. He has penned huge content in Konkani. There is no periodical or magazine in Konkani which does not carry his literature. Being a political analyst he never wrote biased articles. Majority of his stories reflect social issues and aspects of community or society. We can say his stories belong to the Josa family. The continuity which he

follows is highly applicable and a model for young writers8," he said. Honoring Edie Netto, Prof Dhananjaya Kumble said, "I salute Konkani Lekhak Sangh for a wonderful award evening and meaningful get-together. Nowadays no one likes writers, literature for various reasons. But Konkani Lekhak Sangha thought of recognising writers and they chose a senior writer for the award. This is highly appreciable. We all know after inclusion in 8th schedule of Constitution, Konkani became a national language. So being a writer Edie Netto is not only limited to Konkan region or coastal Karnataka. He is a national level writer because his literary works are in the national language. If we felicitate a writer it means we start to read his literary works." Congratulating Edie Netto and Konkani Lekhak Sangh, Fr Francis said, "When I was in PUC I had a dream to see the many known writers including Edie Netto. Then I

met a few of them on various occasions. But after my appointment in Sandesha, I met the majority of them, especially seniors in the programs of Konkani Lekhak Sangh. So I am happy about my association with Sangh for conducting various programs in Sandesha and opening the doors for Konkani writers here. Now Konkani Lekhak Sangh should think about conducting a few programs, activities for young budding writers. In current times it is necessary. If the association organizes such competitions, activities I will be a patron for prizes. I congratulate Edie Netto for receiving the prestigious award and wish him good health and joyful days ahead." Replying to the honor, Edie Netto said, " Still I can read and write Konkani in Kannada script. This is the secret of my continuity. I thank Konkani Lekhak Sangh and the gathering for honoring me."
