Murdering the Mahatma Today - *Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ

January 30, will always remain etched in the memory of the people of India .It was on this day in 1948, that Mahatma Gandhi, our beloved Father of the Nation, was brutally gunned down as he was going for his evening prayer meeting at Birla House. That night in a voice choked with emotion, the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in an address to the nation said, “The light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere”. There could not have been words more accurate to reflect the pain and anguish that millions of people, both in India and

across the world, felt at that terrible moment of history. Today, which is traditionally observed as Martyrs Day, as the nation remembered the Mahatma, a large section of the people of India had this one sentiment in mind: The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. Millions of women, men and children across the length and breadth of the country were out on the streets today, on the anniversary of his martyrdom! They were holding hands to form long human chains and were enveloped in silent prayer. They were singing songs of freedom and staging street plays. They were reading from the Constitution and delivering passionate speeches. At 5.17 pm, the time when the Mahatma was assassinated, they stood still in silent prayer. Never before since that fateful day in 1948, has the nation bonded so closely with one heart and one voice saying, “We are the people of India”, but sadly adding, “The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today”.

When a man brandishes a gun on the protesting crowds and brazenly opens fire and injures a student, it reflects

34 Veez Konkani

much of what is happening in the country today. Ahimsa (non-violence) was the corner stone of Gandhi’s philosophy of freedom and peace. So when this gunman opens fire chanting, “Yeh lo azaadi” and police reports reveal that the gunman’s social media posts indicate that ‘he wants to emulate Godse’, the assassin of the Mahatma, there is cause for concern. When a Union Minister provokes a crowd saying, “Desh ke gaddaron ko”, and the violent crowd responds, “Goli maaron saalon ko” (What do the protesters deserve? To be shot dead!) If violence can be mainstreamed in such a blatant manner, can the doctrine of Ahimsa stand the test of time? The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. That Nathuram Godse is being suggested as a national icon is placing the country at an abysmal depth. A senior member of the ruling party called Godse a true patriot. Another member wants to rename a city with the assassin’s name; besides, some of the most powerful rulers of the country, are shown paying homage to his statue. As a nation we have stooped to a new low. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. Satyagraha was the hallmark of the Mahatma’s efforts to give India freedom from colonial rule. The historic Dandi Salt March of March 12, 1930 reverberated throughout the world. At a

time when there was no social media and the television were not even in one’s wildest imagination, Gandhi believed that in order to attain one’s goals, people had to come out and protest, even if because of that struggle one would have to pay a price. Just as Swaraj was the birthright of every India, so was Satyagraha. In the end, it was this potent weapon, the force of truth and the ability to protest come what may, which brought the nation freedom. Today, as millions of Indians are protesting non-violently, every effort is being made to stop their protests, to stifle their voices, to detain and even arrest them, to fabricate false charges like sedition against them, and to even kill some of them. No one who protests is spared. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. Gandhi believed in dialogue. When those who were victims of violence and in pain like in Noakhali, Gandhi went and listened to the people, especially to the survivors. Interestingly enough, when Anna Hazare, a few years ago launched his campaign and protest against corruption in the country, Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, had the humility to send emissaries to listen to the protestors in order to find an amicable way out. Today however, a scandalous arrogance seems to have got hold of the ruling class. They are certainly not interested in listening or dialoguing with

35 Veez Konkani

the protestors. On the other hand, every effort is being made to portray the protestors as anti-nationals or people who have been bought-up in order to protest. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. The Constitution of India is the only sacred book of the Indian people. The constituent assembly represented India’s pluralism, intellectual brilliance and visionary leadership. They gave the people a Constitution that represented the very best of India’s secular and democratic framework. In the Sabarmati Ashram which he founded, Gandhi had one overarching philosophy and spirituality – Ishwar Allah tere naam, sab ko sanmati de bhagwaan. He was inspired by John Henry Newman’s quest for truth in the soul-stirring prayer, Lead Kindly Light. One of his favourite hymns was Abide with Me, which was almost dropped from this year’s Beating of the Retreat. In a cruel but systematic manner, the wealth of India’s pluralism and the sanctity of the Constitution are being destroyed. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. Freedom to preach, practise and propagate one’s religion is a great gift given to the people of India, whilst maintaining the secular credentials of the country. However now, in a highly manipulative way, religion is being used

to divide people and even to discriminate against them. In Gandhi’s Ashram, everyone found a home in keeping with the Indian tradition of Vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is one family), a phrase found in both, in the Maha Upanishad and the Rig Veda. It is also engraved in the entrance hall of the Parliament of India. In a very calculated and devious manner, a large section of India’s population is made to feel unwanted and excluded only because of the faith they profess. Citizenship to illegal immigrants is sought to be conferred, not because of the fact that they have fled another country but on the basis of the religion they follow. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today.

Gandhi also believed that freedom of speech and expression is fundamental for the healthy growth and progress of

36 Veez Konkani

any nation. He refused to stay silent. He wrote and he spoke. For him, communicating the truth was essential in his quest for liberty. The tragedy today is that hate speeches and lies have gained preponderance. So when a comedian dared to take on in full public view, one who spews venom and falsehood all the time, it is the comedian who is punished with a fiat from a minister of the government, even if the act was on a private airline and both parties were private citizens. Ironically enough, when government ministers and officials display even worse behaviour in public, they get away without even a reprimand. The Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today. The ‘Mahatma’ is ultimately the soul of India, the soul of every citizen, the soul that has been born in the lives of millions of our country women and men and who continue to yearn for the cherished values of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, so emphatically enunciated in the Preamble of our Constitution. The soul which sees its aspirations emblazoned on our national emblem, Satyameva Jayate (Truth Triumphs). A soul which sings the national anthem in full gusto and in unison, as the tricolor flutters high above. A soul which is in deep anguish witnessing in great pain how the Mahatma continues to be murdered in India today; but above all, the soul who

with great courage decides that the time is now to stop this murder! 30 January 2020 *(Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ is a human rights & peace activist/writer. Contact: cedricprakash@gmail.com) --------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Lourdes in Chennai - National shrine

-Compiled By: Ivan Saldanha-Shet. Mangalore.

The fore-runner of the present national shrine practically took shape in 1879, a 140 years ago in the vicinity that it now exists in a suburb of Chennai metro, called Perambur, a big name due to the Coach Factory (ICF) and other industries around. Many may not be aware of this Shrine, a visit there on Feb 4, 2020, prompts this brief expose. This is the

37 Veez Konkani

first shrine in India dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in the year 1897, in remembrance of Her apparition in Lourdes, France, in the year 1858, it is believed. The Lourdes phenomena is now marked world wide on February 11, also as the 'International day of the sick', and brings many blessings to humans. It may be fitting to surrender our great nation India to Our Lady of Lourdes, for protection in the wake of the Corona Virus scare now. This shrine will hold 'National Pilgrimage 2020' on February 15 & 16,

pious associations, charity homes, and several activities that make it a focus of the people around. In times gone by when the Anglo Indians of this railway base was at it's peak, this enterprising and cultures ethnic group was dominating the area; with emigration in a big way in the last few years the present situation is a changed one, but well developed by Tamil Catholics . The annual pilgrimage around February 11 draws thousands from not only many parts of India, but overseas too it's labeled a 'National Shrine' now. There are a continuous devout celebrations that attract many all year round. History of the Church :

on a solemn and mega scale which will be it's 120th. The torch light procession on Saturday evening through the streets is memorable; the national pilgrimage rally on the sprawling grounds draws thousands of devotees. Presently it has several social actions as part of it's vision - renowned schools,

In 1879, in commemoration of the silver jubilee of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Fr. H. Hennessey, Parish Priest of Vepery, Madras, built a chapel near this spot at Perambur. This chapel was blessed and dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in 1880 and served the spiritual needs of

38 Veez Konkani

the Catholics in the locality. In 1903, Perambur was raised to the status of an independent parish. Then, the Catholic population was around 5000 and the church was inadequate, but it was not practicable to plan anything with war looming. In 1928, the Archdiocese of Madras was entrusted to the Salesian Congregation which included Perambur too. The first Salesian priest, Fr. Michael Murray, SDB arrived in December 1943 his Irish inspiration and Salesian zeal saw a transformation here and he desired to build a new church. It was he who launched the idea of making Perambur church a national shrine and place of pilgrimage. Fr. Alfred Mariotta parish priest in 1946 signaled a period of calm but intense activity. Hailing from the Alpine heights of Switzerland he had the dogged tenacity of the mountaineer, as well as taciturnity.

Rev Mariotta's first achievement was the acquisition of the site for the new shrine, No one will ever know but, the devoted clients of Mary soon found a ready site adjourning the tiny church. In 1948 the first National Pilgrimage took place on

this site. The late Archbishop of Madras, Louis Mathias, gladly approved and evinced keen interest in every detail of the design of the new shrine, the Archbishop wanted a magnificent shrine which would resemble the great Basilica at Lourdes, in France. The site was solemnly blessed by Archbishop Louis Mathias and shortly afterwards, on September 8, 1951 the foundation stone of the new shrine was laid. A dream was coming true, many ingenious methods were initiated and progress was soon visible.

The lower church was completed on February 22, 1953 amidst scenes of great joy and splendor, Archbishop Louis Mathias blessed and consecrated the altar. A year later, on February 2, 1954 three large bronze bells from France were blessed and christened to the memory of His Grace, to the Salesian Congregation, and to the Mariotta family who had donated them.

January 1953, Fr. Joseph Sandanam SDB (the first local Tamil) replaced Fr. Mariotta as parish priest. Always optimistic, he set about the difficult task of raising more funds and he was confident that ‘Mary would build her shrine. Mary was true to the task, benefactors came from all over; nevertheless special credit should be given to the unstinting efforts of Fr. Alclde Seeber who worked hand in hand with Fr. Sandanam, toiling day in and day out to procure funds from many sources and even overseas.

impressive monument, which stands tall even today. In many respects this majestic shrine is a form of the basilica of Lourdes in France. It consists of a church upon a church. The main altar of the lower church, or crypt, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, as at Lourdes. Entrance to the upper Church is by means of two imposing ramps; their graceful curves not only add beauty, but also serve as an enclosure for open-air services. The upper church with its magnificent towers has a majestic appearance and is dedicated to OL of Lourdes. The interior is simple and beautiful and creates an atmosphere of peace and devotion. At a solemn and impressive ceremony on June 21, 1967, Fr.John McFerran was officially installed as parish priest of Perambur. This dynamic priest is an ardent admirer and lover of youth, and his presence in the parish gave an impetus to youth work.

The shrine rose gracefully, brick by brick, and slowly the dream became a reality. On February 11, 1960 Archbishop Louis Mathias had the happiness of blessings the upper church and consecrating the altar, it was indeed a magnificent,

Fr. McFerran was succeeded by Fr. Anthony Hickman who took over as parish priest on May 29, 1970. Fr. Hickman and the successive parish priests worked zealously, each making his own individual contribution to the development of the parish, the flock at Perambur; could well total at least 14,000. It has a life like grotto on the South side, a 24x7 adoration chapel, an open air stage on the North side, in the

compound. It has produced a phenomenal number of vocations to the priest hood and religious service. Conclusion : Indeed the faith and hope of the people has been blessed by our Lady a hundred fold, this great shrine of India is well on it's way to become a second Lourdes and set to be a place where miracles and blessings will be visible. The Indian Catholic community, as proud citizens, are deeply committed towards the building of a nation based on justice and equity. The Catholic Church regards it a duty to stand with the country at every difficult moment. Mother India, has for centuries, been

nurturing every single citizen, without any discrimination based on caste, religion, language or region. The Indian dictum of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ ("the world is one family") has resonated all over the world from our shores. Being the cradle of different religions and cultures, India has given the world the ideal of ‘unity in diversity’. As loyal citizens of India, the Catholic community of Gujarat is committed to safeguarding the Constitution of the country and in ensuring that all communities living in the country, enjoy happiness, prosperity and human rights without discrimination. There has been widespread protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) ever since it was passed by Parliament, about one and a half months ago; the Catholic Church of Gujarat, convinced that standing up for the truth is their religion, would like to clearly state their position on the issue. The Church welcomes the Government's attempt to provide citizenship protection to some refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA); however, it would like to express concern and apprehension about the exclusion of any particular group on the basis of religion, in the conferring of citizenship. It is unconstitutional, to determine citizenship on the basis religion. For the Church, ‘Vasudhaiva

41 Veez Konkani

Kutumbakam’, is a non-negotiable ideal. In this ideal, any prejudice or discrimination of any group, contradicts the spirit of a ‘world family’ and is contrary to the values of our Constitution. The proposed provisions also raise serious apprehensions about the benefits to the country, against the huge expenditure incurred through the implementation of CAA, NRC, and NPR. There are also questions about the safety, security of the ‘illegal’ immigrants; above all, the dignity and living conditions to those already confined (or may be confined) in detention centres. We are in solidarity with the non-violent protests in the country, for justice, as an expression of one’s right to freedom of speech and expression. We urge the following of one’s conscience, in joining any peaceful protest. At the same time, we condemn any attempt to silence dissent and to suppress non-violent protests. We take note of the laxity and negligence by the administration and the police in acting against those who violently try to disrupt peaceful protests. There are certainly several unanswered questions with regard to the NRC and NPR: for example, the availability of the stipulated document to prove one’s citizenship; we also have serious doubts about the competency and the

qualification of those responsible for determining the citizenship of another. We consider it thoughtless and hasty to proceed with the implementation of the CAA, NPR and NRC without adequate reflection on the remedies and solutions of these issues related to human rights and human dignity, as well as national peace and unity; and without adequate consultation with the people of India We humbly urge the Government, to immediately stay this act and the associated procedures, until adequate thought is given to all human aspects related to it, so that the good of the entire human community residing in India is ensured and that India emerges in the world community as an exemplary nation, for its adherence to the Constitution and the protection of human rights! May God our Father protect our beloved India! Jai Bharat! Signed: +Rt. Rev Bishop Athanasius Rathnaswamy +Rt. Rev Bishop Jose Chittooparambil CMI Diocese of Ahmedabad Diocese of Rajkot +Rt. Dear Catholic

26 January 2020 ---------------------------------------------

Dear Catholic Bishops of India,

Greetings and good wishes to each one of you, as you gather together today (12 February 2020) for your 34th biennial plenary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) at St. John’s National Academy for Medical Sciences in Bengaluru. I am writing this letter (to each one of you) after much personal discernment and discussions with some, including those who have encouraged me to do so. It is not easy because I would like to be concise yet substantial; however, let me begin:

of our Constitution are systematically denigrated; above all, the pluralistic and multi-cultural fabric of our nation is being eroded. That millions of our country men and women, all over, have been out on the streets protesting and demanding the revocation of Citizens Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NRC) speaks volumes of the abysmal depths we have been pushed into. Dear Bishops, in the context of the reality of today, I have taken a look at the statements which emerged from some of your recent biennial plenary meetings:

Dear Bishops, your meeting takes place at a time when the country is perhaps in the most critical phase of her history. It has never been so bad, on every possible front! Democracy, so dear to us, is being destroyed; the letter and spirit

Bishops of India….

In 2018, based on the theme “United in Diversity for a Mission of Mercy and

43 Veez Konkani

Witness: ‘I am with you always, to the end of the age’ ” (Mt 28: 20) , your statement included, “Any attempt to promote nationalism based on any one particular culture or religion is a dangerous position. It may lead to uniformity but never to genuine unity. Such misconceived efforts can only lead our nation on the path of selfannihilation. Mono-culturalism has never been and can never be the right answer to the quest for peace, progress and development, especially in a country like ours that has a rich diversity of culture, language, region, race and religion. Violence always recoils upon the violent sooner or later, “For all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Mt 26: 52). We deplore the rising incidence of atrocities against women, killings, caste rivalries and communal violence which includes attacks on Christian institutions and communities. Therefore, let us follow the path of true nationalism that can lead our motherland to true peace, harmony, progress and prosperity. Authentic nationalism respects the human dignity of every citizen, regardless of one’s economic status, culture, religion, region or language”. Based on the theme, ‘Response of the Church in India to the present-day challenges’, your statement in 2016, said precious little. It was a brainstorming exercise with many generalised proposals (which few would take seriously) though your conclusion said, “As authentic citizens of the country, we

repose our confidence in the democratic values and the Constitution of India. Trusting in God’s grace, love and mercy, we march ahead to carry out our Godgiven mission, confident of the goodwill and support of our people everywhere. We appeal to all people of goodwill in India to join hands with us in solidarity to work for a better Church and a better society”. Very interestingly, a couple of years earlier( in February 2014 and just before the General Elections that year) when you met in Palai Kerala on the theme, ‘Renewed Church for a Renewed Society – Responding to the Call of Vatican II’, your words were even more emphatic, “When we look at our country, we see corruption plaguing every sphere of society. In such a scenario, Church institutions must be an example of transparency and probity. Another phenomenon is that of internal migration which, while opening opportunities to people, has torn the cultural and religious moorings that sustained them. Globalization too has brought in its wake problems like prolonged working hours which have disrupted family life. We witness the trend to fundamentalism which seeks to dilute the secular character of our nation. Against this trend, we stand by the values upheld by the Indian Constitution and appeal to governments to respect these values”.

44 Veez Konkani

“The experience of God will lead us to involvement in and solidarity with the marginalized and the exploited, those suffering from disabilities, those living in the peripheries of economic, cultural and social spheres. We will speak out against all forms of injustice meted out to them and we will defend their rights. We listened to the call of Pope Francis urging us to “work to eliminate the structural causes of poverty and to promote the integral development of the poor.” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 188). We want the Church to be truly a Church of the Poor.” In 2012, at your 30th Meet in February 2012 at Bangalore on the theme ‘The Church’s Role for a Better India’, your meaningful message was addressed “to all people of goodwill”, and included, “We sensed in our hearts our country’s yearning for a Better India. Our country has been noted for its deep spirituality, its saints and sages, its rich diversity of cultures and religions. People yearn for the ideal enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution of India of a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic which will secure for its citizens Justice, social, economic and political; Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; Equality of status and of opportunity; Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation. But this yearning has remained largely unfulfilled. Economic development has

brought about increasing inequities, an ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor with consequent tensions spilling over into violence. We see around us a betrayal of the poor and marginalized, the tribals, dalits and other backward classes, women and other groups who live in dehumanising and oppressive poverty. We witness rampant exploitation of children. There is disappointment with those in public life for whom ethical concerns matter little. The Church does not wish to rest on her laurels. She recommits herself to being a prophetic Church, taking a decisive stand in favour of the poor and marginalized “We envision an India with more attributes of the Kingdom of God such as justice and equity with its consequent fruits of love, peace and joy.” Dear Bishops, could I humbly request you, to revisit your own words and statements? Why is it that you were so articulate and forthright in 2012 and 2014 and well, rather muted and very general in 2016 and 2018? What about the follow up? And the mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating- whether these statements (particularly those of 2012 and 2014) are mainstreamed and tangibly become the DNA of that Prophetic Church you are committed to be? Dear Bishops, the theme of your current meeting ‘dialogue’, is certainly laudable.

45 Veez Konkani

But first we need to ask, “dialogue with whom and for what?” Dialogue is always in the context of mutual respect and equity; it can never take place in a vacuum or if one party feels superior to the other or for that matter, is rigid not being able to accept another point of view. For example, if one is having a dialogue on the ‘Constitution’, are both parties willing to accept that the basic framework of the Constitution, the sanctity, the values and particularly the democratic, secular and pluralistic fabric will all remain non-negotiables? Are both parties willing to accept that Article 19 (Freedom of Speech and Expression) and Article 25 (Freedom of Conscience and to freely preach, practise and propagate one’s religion) guaranteed in the Constitution, are fundamental to a vibrant democracy? Yes, ‘dialogue’ is important, but not if one is expected to toe the line or to follow unacceptable diktats. Throughout his public life, Jesus ‘took sides’ with the poor and the excluded; the vulnerable and the oppressed. He listened and responded to their cries. He has strong words for powerful vested interests who ‘lay heavy burdens’ on the common people. He refused to dialogue with the scribes and pharisees, the Pilates and Herods (for that matter even with the devil) of his time! Dear Bishops, millions of our sisters and brothers in our country are crying out for a more humane, just and equitable

society; they are crying because divisive, discriminatory, draconian law and policies are threatening their very citizenship; they are crying because they are being targeted because of their faith; they are crying because they are poor and vulnerable; they are crying because they are Dalits and Adivasis, women and children , unemployed youth and beleaguered farmers; they are crying because they want to be listened to, to be in dialogue with, to be accompanied! Dear Bishops, so where do we stand as Church in India today? To put matters in perspective, some Bishops have come out in the open , joined protest rallies and have issued unequivocal stronglyworded statements asking for the repeal of the CAA and a stay on the NRC/NPR; several priests, religious and laity all over the country, have been responsible for organizing protests and/or have joined with other concerned citizens in protests, rallies , sit-ins etc. All this is heart-warming and certainly goes a long way in our witness to the person and message of Jesus in India today! But dear Bishops – this is just a drop in the ocean; definitely not enough! We have to do much more unitedly and immediately. There are some things that hold us back, that prompt us to be more ‘diplomatic’ and ‘cautious’; that seem to legitimize a ‘silence’ for apparently a ‘greater good.’ These include Fear, Ignorance and Exclusiveness. All these

46 Veez Konkani

are sinful! Jesus and his teaching are about exactly the opposite. Jesus says to us “fear no one; I am with you!” When we have no courage to take a stand for justice and truth, because those who rule us may take away our possessions, privileges, power , position whatever – we are in fact sending a stronger message which is contra-witness: that our faith in Jesus is shallow, mere lipservice; that we really do not believe in him; that our treasures are with the rulers of this world! Ignorance is never a value: Jesus himself warned us about our inability to “read the signs of the times.” Yes, many of us suffer from a serious CCM illness (Church/Convent Compound Mentality); our approach is hardly inclusive; we tend to ghettoize; often forgetting the Jesus-style to reach out to the lost, the least and the last! When we stick our necks out, we may lose everything, we may be persecuted: we will be hounded and harassed and God knows what more. That is the core of our spirituality: the crib and the cross before the resurrection! But when we don’t stick our necks out -we will perhaps still lose everything, but also our own credibility and be a betrayal to the person and message of Jesus. Yes, dear Bishops, you owe it to our faith, to the Gospel of Jesus, to the people of our country and above all, to the sanctity of our Constitution. There might not be another chance! In India, our Church is still very hierarchical and

patriarchal: the laity and the people of India look up to you for a Christ-centred, selfless and servant leadership. Please do not disappoint them or the future of the country. Speak out today against the unconstitutional CAA/NPR/NRC through a strong public statement (cfr. www.wethepeopleofindia.net ; https://cjp.org.in/ ).Just as you did some years ago, come out onto the streets of Bengaluru NOW, in order to demonstrate your stand for the secular and pluralistic fabric of our country and Constitution! Many from Bengaluru will surely join you and millions more throughout the country and the world, will be made aware that “your light shines!” Dear Bishops, in ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ Pope Francis says, “An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; it bridges distances, it is willing to abase itself if necessary, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice. An evangelizing community is also supportive, standing by people at every step of the way, no matter how difficult or lengthy this may prove to be.” He bluntly adds, “I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own

47 Veez Konkani

security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the centre and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.” Ultimately saying, “Peace in society cannot be understood as pacification or the mere absence of violence resulting from the domination of one part of society over others. Nor does true peace act as a pretext for justifying a social structure, which silences or appeases the poor, so that the more affluent can placidly support their lifestyle, which others have to make do as they can. Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for the poor and human rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of creating a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority. The dignity of the human person and the common good rank higher than the comfort of those who refuse to renounce their privileges. When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.” Dear Bishops, on 12 March 1977, Jesuit Fr. Rutilio Grande was killed by the regime of El Salvador. Presiding over the funeral Mass of his dear friend, Bishop (now Saint) Oscar Romero said, “The government should not consider a priest who takes a stand for social justice as a politician or a subversive element when he is fulfilling his mission in the politics of the common good;” brazenly adding,” Anyone who attacks one of my priests, attacks me. If they killed Rutilio for

doing what he did, then I too have to walk the same path”. Three years later on Sunday 23 March 1980, in a powerful homily, Romero minced no words as he castigated the Government and the military of his country, “I would like to make an appeal in a special way to the men of the army, to the police, to those in the barracks. Brothers, you are part of our own people. You kill your own campesino brothers and sisters. And before an order to kill that a man may give, the law of God must prevail that says: Thou shalt not kill! No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the law of God. No one has to fulfil an immoral law. It is time to recover your consciences and to obey your consciences rather than the orders of sin. The church, defender of the rights of God, of the law of God, of human dignity, the dignity of the person, cannot remain silent before such abomination. We want the government to take seriously that reforms are worth nothing when they come about stained with so much blood. In the name of God, and in the name of this suffering people whose laments rise to heaven each day more tumultuously, I beg you, I ask you, I order you in the name of God: Stop the repression!” He was assassinated the very next day! Dear Bishops, I am not sure how many of you will see this letter of mine: it may perhaps get into your ‘spam’( I am also aware that some of you may never open

your email!); you may choose to ignore it( that is your right!);but some of you may even have the courage to read and reply! I will be delighted to receive a response from you: do challenge me and please correct me where I am wrong! I am still learning! Thanks, in anticipation. Since there is nothing personal and confidential about this letter, I will also be sharing it with others! I am deeply grateful to those of you who had the openness to invite me your Dioceses, in the context of what is happening in the country today. Dear Bishops, I have written this (as I said earlier) after plenty of soulsearching and consultation. It has not been an easy exercise. I did not want to be too long; but I needed to substantiate my arguments – totally based on what you have said, what the Pope is saying, what Jesus expects us to be doing. Above all, this letter has been written professing my unflinching loyalty to Jesus and his Church; and my sincere commitment to protect and promote the Constitution. My prayer and hope are, that it is accepted with the same openness and positivity with which it is written.

prayers and with an assurance of my prayers for you, dear Bishops, Yours in Him Cedric
