to share some of my thoughts on some critical issues.
National Convention of Christian Journalists, organised by the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA). I would like to place on record my deep and sincere gratitude to Mr Ignatius Gonsalves, the President of ICPA, Fr Suresh Mathew, the Executive Secretary and all other ICPA Committee members for giving me the privilege and opportunity to be here this morning and
We have already listened to some excellent presentations by my fellowpanellists, all well-known media personalities. This convention is focussed on the theme ‘Pragmatism Triumphs Over Principles?’. We have heard it loud and clear that a good journalist has to principled there are no two ways about that; however, being principled need not compromise on pragmatism; at times, they can surely complement one another. The scope of my sharing is slightly different: I have asked to dwell on the Prophetic identity of Christian Journalists in India Today- it is indeed a tall order and given the time constraints I am painfully aware that I will not be doing sufficient justice to the topic- but I will try my best. I am taking a cue from two important yet interrelated trends that have emerged here since morning: first, is about communicating ‘nothing but the truth’ and the fact that many of us do suffer from ‘truthophobia’; and secondly, the need and importance to first speak truth to ourselves. I come from a different background from the ones of my illustrious co-panellists: I am a Christian (a Catholic Priest) and a writer on issues related to human rights, justice and peace. So, my challenge today is to
22 Veez Konkani
speak truth to this august gathering: members of the hierarchy, a galaxy of Christian journalists and other dignitaries. It is not easy to do so: but I will speak from my heart and nothing but the truth! We have gathered together today my dear fellow-communicators at a defining moment of our country’s history! The situation in the country has never been as bad as it is today! Economically, the country is in shambles: the GDP is an alltime low; unemployment an all-time high; the few rich become richer and the poor, much poorer, with the gap between the rich and poor widening. Inflation has touched incredible heights! Public sector companies (like the LIC and Air India) are being sold out and banks on the verge of collapse. The Government has been using the monetary reserves from the RBI. Major independent and Constitutional authorities of the country have been rendered impotent; they behave like caged parrots or have to bow to the whims and fancies of their political masters. Demonetisation brought in the ‘moolah’ for the ruling regime but destroyed livelihood and lives of millions. Financial scams and scandals are the order of the day! Corruption is mainstreamed and blatant. Farmers continue to commit suicide.
The social sector is in the doldrums. The education of our children, is being eroded with the ultimate objective of nationalisation. Articles 370 and 35A, in the context of Kashmir, were unconstitutionally abrogated; the Kashmiris continue to live in one big prison, more than two hundred days after that abrogation! Those in power spew venom on others through their hate speeches (as we painfully witnessed it in the run-up to the Delhi elections less than a month ago). Lynching has become the ‘new normal’. Mainstream media is sold out and the judiciary has become pliant. Those who take a stand for human rights, justice, peace and pluralism, have false cases foisted on them, are denigrated, attacked and even killed! NGOs are systematically throttled through legislation which stifle effective functioning. At the receiving end of all this, are the poor and excluded, the Dalits and Adivasis, the marginalised and minorities, the small farmers and slum dwellers, women and children Every effort is being made to change the essence and spirit of our Constitution! All this and more! Inspite of what the country is going through in every sphere, the Government has the insensitivity to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Population
23 Veez Konkani
Register (NPR) at an all-India level and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). All three are patently discriminatory, divisive and draconian and which most believe, go against the grain and spirit of India’s Constitution and democratic framework. The CAA, the NPR and the NRC are bound to have a serious and detrimental impact on the poor, the excluded, the minorities and other vulnerable groups like the Adivasis and Dalits. The exercise is also a very clear strategy toward the establishment of a ‘Hindutva Rashtra’. Millions of citizens, from every walk of life are today out on the streets, in every corner of the country. They are protesting and demanding that this antipeople law and related measures, be withdrawn unconditionally and immediately. Young and old, students and their professors, social activists and other eminent citizens, the rural folk and the suave urbans, are all protesting in an unprecedented show of strength and solidarity, never seen before in post independent India! Several powerful statements (even by some Catholic Bishops) and excellent articles by leading global thinkers are already in the public domain. On expected lines, this Government is unrelenting! They refuse to listen to the
legitimate cries of the people. They have sent in the police and other goons to beat up the non-violent and peaceful protestors (including students of the Jamia, the JNU and the AMU). Thousands have been detained everywhere, many are arrested and some are even charged with sedition. Police permission to stage protest rallies have not been given in several places and CrPc 144 is imposed in BJP -ruled States. In a small town like Bidar in Karnataka, little school children were mercilessly interrogated by the police for several hours because they were part of a play against the CAA.Ironically, nothing happens to those who demonstrate for the CAA or stage a proCAA play. The NPR /NRC exercises are expected to begin on the first of April. Let’s go back to what has happened here in Delhi, this past week: the nation witnessed in horror as fascism was unleashed on unsuspecting citizens. These were no communal riots! They were a brutal, blatant attack on the Muslim minority community. Members of the ruling regime spewed venom through hate speeches, inciting the mobs to go and attack the Muslims. Houses, shops and even places of worship were burnt, looted and destroyed. Hundreds were injured, many were killed and thousands had to flee
24 Veez Konkani
their homes. There is enough of video evidence to show that the police were either directly involved in the violence or complicit by their silence, allowing the murderous mobs to go out and kill, as they stood and watched. It is worst violence the capital city has witnessed since those terrible days of early November 1984. Even some media persons have been attacked. Till today there is no condemnation of what has happened from the Governments of the day; those responsible for these heinous acts are apparently cloaked with immunity even as they continue their words and acts seething with hate and violence. We are all so-called communicators here! In the recent past, India has reached abysmal depths and even touched rock bottom, in every international evaluation/index on various economic, social and political parameters .The 2019 World Press Freedom Index puts India at 140 out of 180 countries surveyed (a pathetic performance from a democracy!).The Report states, “Violence against journalists – including police violence, attacks by Maoist fighters, and reprisals by criminal groups or corrupt politicians – is one of the most striking characteristics of the current state of press freedom in India. At least six
Indian journalists were killed in connection with their work in 2018. A number of doubts surround a seventh case. These murders highlighted the many dangers Indian journalists face, especially those working for nonEnglish-language media outlets in rural areas. Attacks against journalists by supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi increased in the run-up to general elections in the spring of 2019. Those who espouse Hindutva, the ideology that gave rise to Hindu nationalism, are trying to purge all manifestations of “anti-national” thought from the national debate.” Not laudatory at all! The media is universally regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, provided it is free, frank and fearless in the exercising of its responsibility. Unfortunately, most of the so-called ‘mainstream’ media in India seem to have abdicated this responsibility (we have just witnessed this in Delhi), as they are systematically muzzled or throttled. Those who take a visible stand, like Gauri Lankesh, are killed. Some media, blatantly promote a divisive and communal agenda. One need not go far to realise that a good section of the media (both print and electronic) today is corporatised, coopted, compromised, corrupted and communalised. The reality which has gripped the country today is both serious and
25 Veez Konkani
suffocating. In the light of this reality, do Christian journalists have any role to play? In keeping their identity as disciples of Jesus, are they or should they exercise their prophetic ministry? Or have we given in (as we were reminded earlier) to ‘truthophobia’ too? On 12 February (on the eve of the CBCI biennial meet in Bengaluru), I wrote an ‘Open letter to the Catholic Bishops of India’ requesting that they take a visible and vocal stand on what is happening in the country today. I have received from many of them warm and positive responses and so too, from several others, across the board. On expected lines, the Statement which the Bishops have issued after their meeting is good in words, but says precious little. Once again, the Catholic Church in India, I feel, has missed a golden opportunity to be on the side of Christ and his gospel and the Constitution of India! All this is our reality today! On 4 December 1963 Pope Paul VI promulgated Inter Mirifica (Decree on the Media of Social Communications) which states, “Now clearly this has become most useful and very often necessary for the progress of contemporary society and for achieving closer links among men. The prompt publication of affairs and events provides every individual with a fuller, continuing acquaintance with them, and
thus all can contribute more effectively to the common good and more readily promote and advance the welfare of the entire civil society. Therefore, in society, men have a right to information, in accord with the circumstances in each case, about matters concerning individuals or the community. The proper exercise of this right demands, however, that the news itself that is communicated should always be true and complete, within the bounds of justice and charity. (#5) and further, “First, a good press should be fostered. To instill a fully Christian spirit into readers, a truly Catholic press should be set up and encouraged. Such a presswhether immediately fostered and directed by ecclesiastical authorities or by Catholic laymen-should be edited with the clear purpose of forming, supporting and advancing public opinion in accord with natural law and Catholic teaching and precepts” (#14). Though written almost fifty-seven years ago, ‘Inter Mirifica’ still serves as the key directional document for Catholic Communications today. Already at that time, the scope of the document included all forms of existing media besides the press, like the TV and the radio; today with the advent of social media, Church social communications necessarily includes that, as is evident in some of the recent messages for the
26 Veez Konkani
World Day of Social Communications issued annually by the Holy Father. In January 2004,the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) published their path-breaking statement “Called to be a Communicating Church” – as the outcome of the CBCI General Body Meeting held in Trichur in which they highlighted “that media have a prophetic role, indeed a vocation: to speak out against the false gods and ideals of the day materialism, hedonism, consumerism and narrow nationalism” . The statement also called for a Pastoral Plan for Communications which was meant to be formulated and implemented in every Diocese in India! As one looks back these past sixteen years, one needs to acknowledge with honesty and humility that the Church in India has failed miserably to translate its lofty ideals into action; very little has been done to ensure that “God’s plan for us” is mainstreamed! Why are we afraid? Let us then spend some time to understand what characterises a PROPHET: primarily it is an unwavering COMMITMENT – and as Christians, it is always to the person and message of Jesus; to announce the ‘Good News’. One should never doubt this. But one needs to be COURAGEOUS – to stick one’s neck out, to take a stand and in denouncing all that is evil in society, to
be ready to be beheaded, like John the Baptist. Prophets are wedded to the CONTEXT: they read the signs of the times, study and understand the realities. A prophet CONSCIENTISES all sections of society those who heap heavy burdens on others and those who need to woken from their slumber, from their apathy. Finally, a Prophet is COLLABORATIVE, is inclusive, works together with other women and men of goodwill. There may not be much debate about the characteristics of a prophet. Most of you will agree with the 5Cs just mentioned. But the moot question we need to ask ourselves and to reflect upon at this moment: are Indian Christian journalists prophetic? For an answer to this question (which some will certainly find vexatious), one certainly need not go very far; we only need to cursorily scan and analyse the content of our Christian magazines/journals and the writings of some of our Christian journalists in the secular media. One will not take long to arrive at the truth. (One needs to state here, that in India today we definitely have some exemplary Christian journalists,(some present in this august audience today) who have played a prophetic role and inspite of great risks, have been resolute in their conviction to uphold all that is sacred in communications, taking a
27 Veez Konkani
stand for justice and truth. Kudos to them! Sadly, these can be counted on one’s finger tips!) If commitment to the person and message of Jesus, is a hallmark of a prophet, then surely many Indian Christian journalists are wide off the mark. Their commitment is more often than not, to their Bishop, their Religious Superior or for that matter, to the one who owns the publication they write for. For several Christian Journalists just ‘flaunting’ the activities of a Bishop or some religious service seems their ‘core competency’; for them, that is ‘Christian’ - they don’t even realise the absurdity of it! Commitment is also often to mammon: the revenue they need to generate, through advertisements or sponsorship in order to run their publication. Commercialisation matters, irrelevant of who advertises through their ‘Christian’ publication provide it brings in the ‘moolah’ It is not easy to be courageous communicator today: to take a stand against the powerful – inside or outside the Church. Truth and justice are twosides of the same coin and are nonnegotiables There are no shades of grey in this fundamental or for that matter, any room ‘to run with the hare and hunt with the hound’; no room for ‘diplomacy’ or for ‘anonymity’. In a country today where media has become
so one-sided and blatantly corrupt, we desperately need more communicators who are visible and vocal, demonstrating unflinching courage to uphold truth, justice and other Gospel and Constitutional values. Jesus denounced the pharisees and the scribes; the Herods and Pilates of his time; Pope Francis does not fight shy of doing so too! Sadly, many of our Christian journalists lack the spine for this! Communications has essentially to be contextual; it cannot be divorced from the realities that have a stranglehold on the common citizens of our country today. How many of our Christian journalists have written about what is happening in Kashmir or for that matter about the Ayodhya judgement or the lynchings; or against the unconstitutional CAA, NPR and NRC? How many of us will do an in-depth study of the fascist conflagration which has gripped Delhi these days? We have the growing impoverishment of millions; the suicides by debt –ridden farmers; the politics of hate, divisiveness and exclusion(as we have seen in the recent election campaign in Delhi); rampant corruption; the hounding, arrests and even killing of human rights defenders; the constant attacks on marginalized groups like Dalits, Adivasis and minorities. There is no dearth of
28 Veez Konkani
‘context’ in India today! Are we aware of this? Authentic communication conscientizes. The Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire, developed ‘critical consciousness’ or ‘conscientization’ as an educational and social concept. It is the process by which individuals apply critical thinking skills to examine their current situations, develop a deeper understanding about their concrete reality, devise, implement, and evaluate solutions to their problems. Media persons and intellectuals in our country have been killed because they were critical of the powerful, vested interests. The challenge for us then, is to address the context critically which necessitates serious study, research and writing. Our writings often tend to be superficial or cosmetic; they often lack depth. ‘Tokenism’ boomerangs; those whom we are called to conscientize can see through our shallowness! Fear, ignorance and exclusiveness are major sins! These are overcome, when we are collaborative: work together with women and men of goodwill; make the concerns of ordinary citizens, our own. In his 2020 World Day of Peace message, Pope Francis says, “Fear is frequently a source of conflict. So, it is important to overcome our human fears and acknowledge that we are needy children in the eyes of the One who loves us and awaits us, like the father of
the prodigal son (Lk 15:11-24). The culture of fraternal encounter shatters the culture of conflict. It makes of every encounter a possibility and a gift of God’s generous love. It leads us beyond the limits of our narrow horizons and constantly encourages us to a live in a spirit of universal fraternity, as children of the one heavenly Father”. So as Christian journalists in India today how does one exercise one’s prophetic responsibility? As communicators who are supposedly Christ-centred, can we come out of our comfort zones, our fears, our ignorance, our exclusiveness, our sense of complacency? Can our journalism be more committed, courageous, contextual, conscientizing and collaborative? Certainly, all these are very loaded questions with no easy answers. But given what is happening in the country today, do we have a choice? It is no state secret that those who take a stand for truth, who promote communications of justice and peace, have often to pay a heavy price: they are side-lined, denigrated, false accusations/cases are foisted on them and some we know are even killed. Some of this happens also within our Church and within our own religious Congregations! At this critical juncture of our country’s history, the Indian Christian journalists, must not be afraid!
29 Veez Konkani
We must redefine ourselves and play a prophetic role in order to truly be a communicating church, in every sense of the word and in fulfilling the mandate given to us! It will not be easy; but authentic disciples of Jesus, are always ready to pay the price-whatever the consequences! In ‘Evangelii Gaudium’, Pope Francis minces no words saying, “Peace in society cannot be understood as pacification or the mere absence of violence resulting from the domination of one part of society over others. Nor does true peace act as a pretext for justifying a social structure which silences or appeases the poor, so that the more affluent can placidly support their lifestyle while others have to make do as they can. Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for the poor and human rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of creating a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority. The dignity of the human person and the common good rank higher than the comfort of those who refuse to renounce their privileges. When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.” (# 218) Our Nobel and poet laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, challenges us through a very powerful but relevant poem, Freedom from fear is the freedom
I claim for you my motherland! Freedom from the burden of the ages, bending your head, breaking your back, blinding your eyes to the beckoning call of the future; Freedom from the shackles of slumber wherewith you fasten yourself in night's stillness, mistrusting the star that speaks of truth's adventurous paths; freedom from the anarchy of destiny whole sails are weakly yielded to the blind uncertain winds, and the helm to a hand ever rigid and cold as death. Freedom from the insult of dwelling in a puppet's world, where movements are started through brainless wires, repeated through mindless habits, where figures wait with patience and obedience for the master of show, to be stirred into a mimicry of life. Do we have the courage to get out of our slumber and apathy, from our comfort zones and to exercise our prophetic ministry as Christian journalists in India today? The answer dear friends, is not merely blowing in the wind but living in each of us: into that haven of freedom, dear Father, let us AWAKE NOW!

SHAHEEN BAGH: RESISTANCE and HOPE! -
*Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ
Ever since the women of the area began the protests in Shaheen Bagh I was always wanting to go there to express my solidarity with them. Finally, on Sunday 1 March, I had the opportunity of doing so. Shaheen Bagh is an area
located in the South Delhi district of the National Capital. This locality has been reported in media continuously since 15 December 2019 for being the epicentre for the ongoing protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NRC). Strangely, that Sunday morning, the Delhi police imposed prohibitory orders in the area under section CrPc 144 and deployed a massive police force in the area because of an apparent threat from a fundamentalist Hindu organisation on the protestors.
Notwithstanding all that I reached the place thanks to the help of a good friend who lives in the area. As I look back and reflect on that brief visit, I realise that it was for me a very
37 Veez Konkani
profound and deep experience; and for so many different reasons. Primarily, Shaheen Bagh is today synonymous with all that is good and beautiful in the country and what is sacred in our Constitution. Today it is a place of exemplary courage, resilience and about the indomitable strength of women. Sitting on the floor and under a makeshift ‘shamiana’ were hundreds of women; the numbers keep swelling at times. Some of them have been there for all of the 78 days (as of 1 March); one of the women is so weak that she has to lie flat on a bed for most of the time; some are praying, many on fast, some reading from the Holy Book. In the midst of them, was a group of women, very obviously from a different background and from another part of the city; they were singing songs of resistance, dancing and clapping- trying to get the other protesters join in! It was truly a celebration of womanhood, of sisterhood, of motherhood- all rolled in one! It was the redefining of ‘Women’s Day’ not a token 8 March but every single day of the protest. Shaheen Bagh is about unity: the sisterhood and brotherhood of every single citizen of India. It is about that relentless quest for justice and truth; it is about communal harmony and peace and the celebration of our rich fabric of pluralism and the secular character of
our beloved nation. I spent some time with a Christian gentleman (just outside the sit-in), who with a Bible in hand, came in regularly just to say that he was with them. “Jesus, my Saviour taught me to love and accept all as my sisters and brothers. I cannot exclude anyone” was his spontaneous response when asked why he was there. It was a celebration of communal harmony to see how the Sikhs worked selflessly in the 'langar' providing unlimited food to over ten thousand people every day! They brought in tons of food material from all across Punjab; volunteers come in at their own expense: cook the meals, serve
38 Veez Konkani
the protestors first and then to anyone else who needs a free meal.
Shaheen Bagh is about non-violence: a unique protest dignified in every way, women in silence and with patience waiting for their demands to be met: the immediate revocation of the CAA and that for the non-implementation of the NRC and NPR! Just outside the main concourse, there is a fabrication of a ‘mock’ 'Detention Centre ' which seem to be mushrooming all over the country and which needs to be dismantled! Shaheen Bagh also highlights all that is wrong in the country today particularly the way divisive, discriminatory and draconian laws and policies are emerging everywhere. It is about systemic failure and the inability of an incompetent regime to govern a democratic nation. The protest is a strong ‘no’ to the way fascism has taken centre-stage and now has a stranglehold on millions of citizens of the country. Significantly, a makeshift library has cropped up near the protest site: people are asking to donate books – and all are encouraged to come there and read: to educate themselves, to be
aware of what is happening in the country today! Shaheen Bagh is about ‘We the People of India’ – the basic fact thar our beloved Motherland belongs to all of us; that we will never allow the fascists to destroy our country or take her away from us! The struggle will continue till truth, justice and the demands of the citizens triumph! Shaheen Bagh is a reminder of one of the most important events in India’s struggle for independence took place when Mahatma Gandhi launched the
Civil Disobedience Movement with his famous Dandi March, which began on 12 March 1930 in Ahmedabad and ended after about twenty-four days on 6 April. The similarities between Shaheen Bagh and the Dandi March are amazing.! The Dandi March or Salt Satyagraha was a non-violent means of protest led by Mahatma Gandhi which garnered huge public support and worldwide
39 Veez Konkani
attention. Gandhiji walked from his ashram on the banks of the River in Sabarmati in Ahmedabad to small town of Dandi near coastal Surat to protest against the repressive salt tax imposed by the colonial government. This march covering the distance of roughly 385 km worked as a catalyst for India’s struggle for Independence. The salt Satyagraha (Sanskrit word meaning ‘struggle for the truth’) was based on Gandhi’s principle of non-violence. Gandhi believed that non-violent means of protest with the means of ‘soul force’ was the right method to fight political and social injustice. Dandi March demonstrated Gandhi’s experiments with his nonviolent means of political action. This kind of political action has been unprecedented in the history of political protest around the world. Shaheen Bagh is all about that and perhaps in some ways even more! The Shaheen Bagh protest has spawned other ‘Shaheen Baghs’ all over the country. Today thousands of women are at sit-ins in big cities and smaller towns in solidarity with the women in Delhi. Of course, the Government does not know how to deal with this unique protest. Two lawyers of the Supreme Court were
deputed by the Apex Court to act as interlocutors. They apparently listened patiently to the women and have submitted their report. What is going to be the final order no one knows. But several legal luminaires have opined that the right to non-violent protest is an essential in a democracy. There are calculated and concerted efforts being made to denigrate this people-focused and unique protest. Some began saying that they were blocking a main arterial road into Delhi; totally false, because it is the police of Uttar Pradesh that have done so; besides the women are just on one side of the road. Then there is
another calumny being spread: that these women are being “paid” to protest; some fake pictures were doing the rounds on social media. Then on 6 March when there were heavy rains in Delhi, some of the ‘Godi Media’ went to town saying that the protestors had left the place; again: false! The protestors had taken shelter in the corridors of the shops along the roads! Fascism, as seen in the style of Hitler’s Information
40 Veez Konkani
Minister has a clear-cut strategy “tell a lie a thousand times, and people will tend to believe you!”
But women of Shaheen Bagh are not giving up: after all, ‘Shaheen ’is a bird of prey, the Peregrine Falcon. The word is used in Arabic and the origin is old Persian. In Farsi it could also mean ‘like a king’ or ‘worthy of a king’. It is the name of a scholar of hadith, Ibn Shaheen. A ‘Shaheen’ is also known for its tenacity, its ability to see things from afar! It symbolizes speed, superiority, determ ination, loyalty, strength, wisdom, freedom, focus, ambition, and aspira tion. Then there is the Falcon Spirit Animal. ... The falcon symbolism, after
all, speaks about victory, success, and rising above challenging situations; and it is similar to the worm animal spirit. At its core, the falcon meaning signifies wisdom, vision, and protection. As a solar symbol, it defines victory and the ability to rise above all situations. Shaheen Bagh today is all this and more! Sarojini Naidu, India’s legendary freedom fighter, poet and nightingale , puts its poignantly, “Shall hope prevail where clamorous hate is rife, Shall sweet love prosper or high dreams have place Amid the tumult of reverberant strife 'Twixt ancient creeds, 'twixt race and ancient race, That mars the grave, glad purposes of life, Leaving no refuge save thy succouring face?”

Shaheen Bagh today is about the strength and power of the women of India: about resistance and hope. I left the place renewed and strengthened with a deeper HOPE for a new dawn! From deep within me, came these words, “I salute you dear women of Shaheen Bagh; continue to inspire many more women and others for more Shaheen Baghs all over the country! The nation is proud of you! Continue to the very end! Truth will triumph! We are with you!” 6 March 2020 *(Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ is a human rights & peace activist/writer.
