The
first momentous step of the 150 glorious year’s journey of Apostolic Carmel Sisters in India was taken on 19 November 1870. It was on this day; three pioneering Apostolic Carmel Sisters along with three Cloistered Carmel sisters set foot on the soil on Mangalore, India and embarked on their mission of the empowerment of girl children through education. It is a day immortalized in the history of Mangalore. Of the three Cloistered Carmelites, one of these, Mariam Baouardi has been canonized by
In the 1870s, Mangalore was a large village and part of British India. It was an era unmarked by modern conveniences such as macadamized roads, electric lights, and efficient systems of transport. Of the last, the only means of travel available to the populace were bullock carts and a few horse-drawn carriages. It was also a time when typhoid and malaria were rampant and deadly. Thinking was not progressive either, and the quality of life of women was unenviable. Girls received no education and married while they were in their early teens. The Hunter Education Commission noted that in 1881 only 0.2% of the women of this part of India were literate. This was the scenario which met the Apostolic Carmel Congregation. It did not daunt them but rather, inspired the brave Sisters to venture into female education as the first step to modernization and societal upliftment. They vowed to provide

literacy as the foundation of the growth and progress of society. It was at this historical moment that God chose Mother Veronica, nee Sophie Leeves, an English woman with vision, to initiate the great task of education for girl children. It was while she was serving the poorest of the poor in Kerala and witnessed the plight of little girls that she was inspired to found the Apostolic Carmel Congregation. She was followed by a succession of great collaborators. Mother Marie Des Anges, the First Superior General along with Mother Aloysia laid sturdy bedrock for women’s education which was the main apostolate of the A.C. Congregation.
160, the following year. This was solely on account of the quality education provided by the pioneering Sisters. The impact of education on the lives of girls was so great that parents from different localities earnestly exhorted the Management of the Congregation to open schools in different places. St Ann’s Convent now served as the Mother House and a number of schools were established in rapid succession in different corners of Mangalore, and thereafter in Karnataka, Kerala states and Sri Lanka. As the Congregation grew in strength more schools and colleges were established in various states of India, Pakistan, Kuwait, Bahrain and East Africa. Today girls in their thousands continue to be educated in different parts of the world.

The Management of the Apostolic Carmel, with characteristic foresight, perceived the need for personnel to be trained to educate young women. This inspired Mother Aloysia to found a Teacher Training Institute as early as in 1890, the first of its kind in South India and for many years the only Teachers’ Training Institute which gifted hundreds of trained and dedicated teachers to facilitate the all-round development of girls, in particular. But, doubtless, the greatest contribution to women’s education rests in the establishment of St Agnes College in 1920-21 by Mother Aloysia A.C., the Congregation’s second Superior General. She realized that at that point in world history, when women as wives and mothers held the destiny of the nation in their hands, they themselves ought to be moulded by the ideals of life. With her contemporary thinking, she also desired the College to impart joboriented education. St Agnes College is the first Women’ College on the west coast of India and the first in the entire country to be run by a private management.
This Institution served to inspire the rest of the women of India who now aimed to receive higher education themselves. To serve their noble aspirations three colleges were founded: Patna Women’s College, Bihar; Providence College, Kerala; and Carmel College, Goa. Research Centres too were established. The continued need to have trained personnel gave birth to St Ann’s College of Education that has provided thousands of trained teachers to the whole world. The holistic training provided in these schools and colleges has inspired many young women to dedicate their lives to God and the service of society as Religious Sisters in the Apostolic Carmel as also in several other congregations. Besides education, the Apostolic Carmel has catered to the needs of

the marginalized of society and to less privileged children by building and running orphanages, social service centres, technical schools, schools and residences for differently abled children and adults, crèches, health care centres, counselling centres, homes for destitutes, needle work centres, boarding homes and hostels, vocational courses, community colleges, homes for the aged and social welfare centres. The Sisters have also adopted other ministries, institutions, programmes and causes in their parishes and its surrounding villages. These include prison ministry, SHGs, rescue homes, adult education and care for delinquents, to name a few.
At this celebration of the one hundred and fifty years of sacrificial love and committed service of the Apostolic Carmel Sisters, along with the collaboration of the staff, students, parents, alumni, benefactors and well-wishers, the Congregation wishes to express its profound gratitude to all the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ which was once lit by their Founder, the Venerable Mother Veronica. The Sisters of the Congregation acknowledge with deep humility and respect all services, temporal and spiritual, rendered by Church leaders and other individuals who have contributed to the growth and development of the Apostolic Carmel, and thereby, of society itself.

Instances have been admitted where some put inside hand bags and pockets, to carry home, God knows why. This is against basic ethics and civility, highly wrong as per moral and canonical doctrine of the church and traditional belief. It is a failure totally, implementing it seriously is neglected due to gross indifference and human self glory. The needed action of the clergy and action if any by ecclestical authorities is always in wraps and
the church kept in dark, making transparency a serious casualty. So, where and what is the real cause and remedy to a more serious pandemic deeply rooted? It may fail to edify the general congregation to experience how regular, routine prayers and rituals in private chapels and communities are held - it all points to inattentive, crudely recited, half articulated recitation at regular intervals which hardly meets the norms of worship, adoration and prayer to Glorify a God who is claimed to be all Supreme.

Online worship and rituals have caused aversion in many regular faithful, who after years of sincere attendance at services feel deeply deprived and cheated. They are convinced it is best to be in their homes and pray fervently avoiding the formalities and repetitive rituals in church - the satisfaction they say is more durable than any formal church service. To many it seems that God himself has directed the faulty worship to a better level without superfluous ceremony in this cenario. However, the church beliefs are transformed not based on God's commands but, convenience of the umans, church hierarchy for, of and by man. Worship and adoration of the supreme has fallen to be secondary. Anything is now acceptable in organised religion homosexuality, termination of life at any stage, usurp wealth and power by any and all means in all walks of life, with morals eleminated and ethics obsolete.
