Allen’s Vision & Mission: Providing a healthy work environment for Staff (14000) spread over all the States and Union Territories of India including 6 branches in the North East opened in this period; Transparent policies & procedures; Efficient customer centric approach and Conduct, Make banks services affordable and accessible to all segments especially women, children and the economica lly weak; 75000, Women's Self Help Groups were credit linked, to the tune of INR 109 crores- of these 25,000 SHGs were set up in 2009-10benefitting nearly 750,000 women To the existing Three Self Employment Training Institutes, Three more were added during 2009-10 one each at Nashik, Thane & Amaravati ( all in Maharashtra) and one at Betul of Madhya Pradeshproviding training men and women, preferably the young, in trades and skills for setting up small manufactur ing and service entreprises like- milk processing, hotography/videography, maintenance of Solar powered equipments, processing agro products, Beauty saloons for women, Embroidery and dress designing , auto repairs and aintenance; trainese were provided free board & lodging
for training periods of seven days to 3 months; On successful completion of training/skill development, candidates received expert guidance from Bank's branches to set up the business and also finance as was needed.. An air conditioned Fitness centre for all categories of staff with a Trainer, was set up at Bank's HQ Pune , This was besides a free medical consultant available to staff at the HQ for fixed hours daily; a Help Desk for managing cases of Schizophrenia, stress , suicidal tendencies - open to staff, their families and general public was set up in Jan 2009 and was manned by a Qualified medical professional who till then was being utilised as a receptionist. Employee Talents Day was held in 2010 as well and saw good participation. As a token of deep appreciation for the contribution of the staff for Banks growth, every Employee irrespective of cadre/ grade was presented a pure (99.9% purity, Hall marked) 7.5 gms Gold coin as a Memento on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee. It involved INR 19 crores outlay from Employee welfare fund set up by the bank and

in all probability was unprecedented in the industry. The Bank conducted a special statewise Recruitment of Clerical Staff in 2009/10 to fill up vacancies in rural brances unfilled for nearly a decade . The focus was on avoiding the need for candidates spending money for coaching which was expensive and beyond the reach of large number of rural students; There was no written eligibility test; To ensure objectivity and transparency, vacancies were declared district and state-wise and candidates with not less than 60% marks in arithmatics in SSLC were short-listed in the descending order ofmarks ; ( Min. eligibility qualification was kept as Graduation in any discipline as per Govt of India guidelines) From the top , 3 times the number of declared vacancies, were interviewed and the most suitable were selected. The recruitment process took less than half the time taken (one year)for recruitment by the independe nt centralised agency (institute of Banking Personnel Selection) and the bank saved over INR one crore by costs. 98% of the rural vacancies were filled, candidates' motivation was high as they secured employ ment in their native district and unlike
attrition level of over 60% in case of centralised recruitment through IBPS, in this, Bank managed Recruitment, attrition was just around 2% over 2-3 years.
Hiware Bazar is a village in the rain shadow region of the Ahmednagar Dist. of Maharashtra- about 3-4 hrs drive from Pune. Once notorious for drunkenness, among men, , for crimes like gambling, murder and unemploy ment, today it is an internationally acclaimed Model Village. This thanks to the untiring and visionary leadership of one man named Sri Popatrao Pawar- once a Kangra League cricket and educated young man who hails from this village- gave up his comfortable job in Bombay and settled down in Hiware Bazar with determination to transform it. I visited the village in early 2009 and was thrilled by the transformation that had taken place- inspite of being in rain shadow region, by scientific

water conservation, growing crops that dont require much water, evry family owning a cow and a small plot of land , using cow dung based biogas for cooking & heating, the village had turned self sufficient; it had school and medical clinic. Yet no bank found it viable to open a branch here. The Village chief i.e Mr Popat Rao placed before me the great desire of his villagers for a bank branch. Of course my GMs were not so receptive to the idea. I have much faith in the villagers - my extensive visits to villages during my tenure as GM in Syndicate Bank and later as Executive Director in Oriental Bank had reinforced my belief in late Prof C. K Prahlad's finding that there is Wealth at the Bottom of the Pyramid. I decided to test it in Hiware Bazar. The Board of Directors agreed to my proposal So we had a branch inaugurated at Hiware Bazar on 2611.2009 over Video Conference along with 74 others in different parts of India as part of our Platinum Jubilee Programme.
Manager that in celebration of getting a long awaited bank branch, 75 women of the village had deposited Rs 75 lakhs of their savings in to their newly opened banks accounts. Within 18 months of the event, the business of the branch had reached over Rs 10 crores and several enterprises had come up by the youth of the village. I paid a second visit to the village and addressed the villagers congratulati ng them for their achievements.
Banks can play a catalytic role in creating awareness about social and cultural heritage of the country and a positive attitude towards diversity, by extending financial support:

It is my sincere wish that the focus will be not so much on my activities but rather on the fact that a Banker with Knowledge, honest intentions and an empathetic disposition can make a significant difference in the lives of thousands or even millions .-

all the more than politicians and bureaucrats put to together. What little good that I might have done, could not have been possible at all without God's grace. My family especially my Wife Eveline and Children Angelo & Angeline left me nothing to worry about on the domestic front and left me all the time to focus on the professional front. Eveline was a super-excellent Mother to her children and a Home maker par-excellence. I am deeply indebted to them. Last but not the least, working in Public sector banks with multiple unions, politicians and bureaucrats breathing down the neck of the CEO, maintaining Ethics , Transparency and Efficiency is a Himalayan task. But I had the shoulders of some very courageous , absolutely honest and down to earth seniors & colleagues in each of the three banks I served ,, to lean on, in times of challenges. My success if any, belongs equally to them too. When I hung up my banking boots on Sept 30, 2010, it dawned on me
that an era of making others dance to my CEO tune had ended and the era of dancing to the tunes of my Chief at home 24x7 had dawned. Of course I took it in stride as the photo of my Cow-boy Jig with my CEO at home would show. ----------------------------------------My thoughts to be shared with Veez readers: India is a country rich in resources of which nearly 74 per cent are controlled by 1percent of the people. We need more and more young persons- knowledgeable trustworthy and selfless as Bankers. Judges.
