1) 1 kg sweet pumpkin, cut into medium size pieces 2) 3/4 kg field marrow, cut into

- Make a fine paste of roasted ingredients, coconut, and tamarind pulp by adding required water

He had to make difficult decisions; every decision of his would impact on Mary or Jesus or on both of them, in a profound way. But he did so with a great sense of prudence and responsibility and surely, after much discernment. The Biblical ‘righteousness’(justice)was his forte; he was imbued with a tremendous sense of justice. Our world today is plagued with several injustices and the victims of these injustices are always the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable of our society. Celebrating St Joseph today, means we must be visible and vocal in taking a stand against the injustices of our time. Let us Celebrate St. Joseph! Pope Francis has never stopped reminding the world that the Holy Family: Joseph, Mary and Jesus were refugees. When the child

Jesus was in danger of being killed by King Herod. Joseph took the babe and Mary and fled into Egypt; there they found refuge, safety and security. Joseph experienced and understood the plight of refugees. A hallmark of the papacy of Pope Francis has been his consistent concern for refugees and migrants. He has been urging all to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate refugees and migrants. All around us there are migrants, refugees, others. We have seen what happened to thousands of migrant workers all over the country, when the lockdown was imposed, a year ago. Celebrating St. Joseph means checking our own attitudes: how do we treat the ‘outsider’; someone who is not like us? Are we inclusive enough? Let us Celebrate St. Joseph! Pope Francis often refers to Joseph as a ‘dreamer’ capable of accepting the task entrusted to him by God. In one of his earlier homilies he said, “Christians, especially young people, should follow the example of St Joseph who was not afraid to listen to his dreams, like when he was told in a dream not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife and again when he was told to flee with Mary

and Jesus to Egypt. When we dream great things, beautiful things, we draw close to God’s dream, the things that God dreams for us. May he give young people – because he, too, was young – the ability to dream, to risk and to take on difficult tasks that they have seen in their dreams.” Pope Francis has also been sharing a very personal secret. “I would like to share with you something very personal. I like St Joseph very much. He is a man of strength and of silence. On my desk in my room, I have a statue of St Joseph sleeping. While sleeping he looks after the Church. Yes, he can do it! We know that. When I have a problem or a difficulty, I write on a piece of paper and I put it under his statue so he can dream about it. He now sleeps on a mattress of my notes. This means please pray to St Joseph for this problem. That is why I sleep well: it is the grace of God!” Celebrating St Joseph means that we too are called to dream of making our world a more humane, just, free, equitable and fraternal one. When St Joseph awakes, he actualises his dream; we are called to do likewise.

Let us Celebrate St. Joseph! Just before Christmas 2017, in a homily at Casa Santa Marta Pope Francis said, “St. Joseph gives us three key lessons as we walk with him to Bethlehem. Jesus’ father on earth knew ‘how-to walk-in darkness’, ‘how to listen to the voice of God’, and ‘how to go forward in silence’.” Then speaking of Joseph’s struggle upon learning of Mary’s pregnancy, he continued, “Joseph fought within himself; in that struggle, the voice of God [is heard]: ‘But get up’ — that ‘Get up’ [which is heard] so many times in the Bible at the beginning of a mission — ‘Take Mary, bring her to your home. Take charge of the situation; take this situation in hand and go forward.’ Joseph did not go to his friends to be comforted; he did not go to a psychiatrist so that he could interpret the dream. No… He believed. And he went forward. He took the situation in hand. What was the situation? What was it that Joseph had to take up? Two things: fatherhood, and mystery.” To truly celebrate St Joseph today we need to embark on a similar journey: to walk in darkness, to listen to the voice of God, and to go forward in

silence. It is not easy- but it is the way of the pilgrim, the path of discipleship! Let us Celebrate St. Joseph! As we pray today and every day, in the words of Pope Francis, Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. New Stone inscription reiterates.

Early Portugese Fort in Bolar, Mangaluru observed, one has Kannada and other Portuguese inscriptions.

IvanSaldanha-Shet. Two stones bearing inscriptions were brought to public notice on March 15, 2021. They were found while excavating the land for constructing the skill development centre under Mangaluru Smart City, in 2020. It came to the notice of the Dean, College of Fisheries, at Hoige Bazar Campus on Saturday, March 13, 2021, by an observant PG student. Some stones with inscriptions may have already been cleared from the premises it seems. The two stones it is

notice. Immediately a message was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office who in-turn sent the details to Director General ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), V. Vidyavathi, who directed the team from Mysuru led by Dr K Muniratnam, to look into it.

The ASI team, on Monday March 15, 2021 arrived at the spot and an estampage was done to obtain the exact replica of an inscription using maplitho paper and ink; the copy is to be preserved in the office and published in the annual report of 'Indian Epigraphy' which will get attention from experts worldwide. The team is expected to visit Adyar and Udyavara to examine stone inscriptions found there recently. Several inscriptions belonging to the Alupa dynasty is found in the coastal region that gives scope for research, the experts said. The Kannada one probably belongs to the 11th century and Portuguese inscription may be a 16th century one. The Kannada inscription could be a donation/allocation given to

someone. But it is difficult to find out details, because the top four lines are eroded. and the inscription is not clear.

What is more relevant here to the Catholics of Mangaluru is the stone with Portugese emblem and inscription. The team concluded that the inscription is in Portuguese letters. Note : A well known historian in this context, Alan Machado Prabhu did a preliminary study, he opined that it is difficult to decipher at this stage, hopefully some restoration/build up could

help. Translated basically it is said to read as “This tomb is of Antonio Pereira (or Texeira) de Macedo nobleman of the house of the King our lord, captain of this fortress who was killed by the Moors in the siege ... present the 28 April...” Further, date and so on..unfortunately not clear now. Perhaps the matter will get enlightened later if an interest is exerted. Only after official decipherment work is completed, the exact details can be provided, but the emblem and inscription are seriously eroded and the surface disfigured. The emblem compared with the previous tombstone (Mauro -1629) has significant differences, it may indicate that the dynasty and period of the persons are different. It is of rare interest that the area is part of ancient Mangaluru and close to the Mangaladevi Temple (from which early Kudla got the name of Mangala Uru) ’Allupa Dynasty' held sway here for a while. Also, according to local historians this area is prominent from early 1500 AD for a Portugese Fort and settlement, in 2009 a similar Portuguese tombstone inscription was found just about 100 feet or so away, the details follow. at ta spot opposite the confluence of the two rivers and the Arabian Sea, was discovered in March 2009, by a history buff, along the river and at ’Haleya Kote - Bolar’, near the river edge, in the deserted old compound housing cement godowns, between Joy Land English School and Mukhya Prana Temple just yards behind where the new stone inscriptions were found. Noticing a solid granite stone protruding from soil under some bushes near an old well. The spot is about 100 feet behind where the present stone (March 2021) was discovered. Due to the caked mud and vegetation around it was not too clear, it surely looked like an ancient European relic. Bringing it to the notice of authorities, later it was cleaned and photographed.

In April 2009, local media published the ‘discovery’. The finder brought it also to the notice of his friend, historian Alan Machado-Prabhu and

turned out to be the tombstone of Domingos de Mourao Coutinho, the captain of the Portuguese fort of Mangalore, who died on April 30, 1629. “It would have been installed over his grave which in all probability located within the fort

Later this 1629 tombstone with the help of the then parish priest of the Cathedral and active well wishers of the area with difficulty was brought to the Cathedral premises, with a view of preserving it. Tribute to P F Rodrigues on his 25th year in celestial abode •

March 16, 2021 With humble origins in Kawdoor, a suburban town of Mangalore that still bears resemblance to its green natural tapestry of coconut and areca nut palms, Paul Fredrick Rodrigues (“P F Rodrigues” as he was popularly known) was born to the late Peter Aloysius Rodrigues and Regina Rodrigues in 1924.

elementary education in his native town of Kawdoor He subsequently moved to the city of Mangalore in pursuit of higher education. Rooted in solid Jesuit education, he graduated from St. Aloysius College and went on to pursue advanced studies in Law from the University of Bombay (now Mumbai). His initial years as a Junior Attorney in Civil Law were shaped under the able mentorship of the late Somashekhar Rao, a distinguished attorney from Mangalore. Upon acquiring the required expertise and tenure in Civil law, he excitedly ventured to take up practice in Criminal Law, only to be counselled by his mentor to return to the Civilian arena of law practice. Respecting the sound advice of his mentor, he transitioned back to his Civil law practice. By this time, he had successfully established his law firm in partnership with the late Advocate S P (Bannu) Lobo. Through the years, he experienced an entire new world open up to him; he learned that a successful career was possible only through the toil of long dedicated hours in service to the people and community he

represented. He reckoned that if he tried hard and took advantage of the opportunities that then existed, he could succeed at anything. In the years that followed, he specialized in Real Estate, Succession, and other Civil law matters. By this time, he had developed a diversified range of skill sets that garnered him both distinction and praise. It is noteworthy to mention that of particular importance to him, was his utmost concern to uplift, protect and advocate on behalf of the underprivileged and socially disadvantaged groups in society. Most gratifyingly, he aspired to breathe life into every noble cause he represented. His personal life reflected his deep commitment to his Divine creator. Firm in faith, he dedicated his time and talent in support of the Church. His blessings overflowed. It was God’s Divine providence that led him to meet, befriend and later wed his beloved wife, Marie Joan D’Souza, a schoolteacher, and active member of the Choir group. She too came from a family deeply rooted in faith. Her paternal uncle, the late Rev. Albert V. D’Souza, then Vicar of Mangalore Diocese, officiated their marriage. He later went on to become the Archbishop of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Paul and Marie were gifted with 7 beautiful children, 4 girls followed by 3 boys.

Outside the guise of an attorney, P F Rodrigues experienced joy in showcasing his vocal talents as a prominent “toastmaster” at many weddings. He took to drama on a public stage during his early years as an attorney. Notable among them was his role as “Pontius Pilate” in the “Passion of Christ” play that became an instant hit in early 1960. He was a distinguished guest and speaker on numerous occasions, always loved and admired for his simplicity. When the first Law College was established in Mangalore in 1974, the management was quick to offer him a position as faculty. He accepted this teaching assignment at SDM Law College with passion and commitment. Even to this day, students fondly remember and admire him for instilling in them the guiding principles of life based on the three tenets – good thoughts, good words, and good deeds. With the grace of God, Paul’s limits were boundless. He always motivated himself to bring out the best in him, be it his professional, social, or family life. In recognition for his services to the Church, he was conferred with the papal award “PRO ECCLESIA ET PONTIFICE” by His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, in the year 1955. Being blessed with a bountiful life

and determined to make a difference, his focus shifted to active politics. He became involved as a member of the Rashtriya Seva Dal, a member of the City Municipal Council and as President of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). Additionally, he served as the Director of MCC Bank, a member of the Catholic Board of Education, the Sodality of Immaculate Conception, and a host of other social organizations. By this time, he had learned the importance of balancing family and professional life. The backbone of his success can nevertheless be attributed to the ever-loving support of his wife and life partner. Riding on his marvels, he was persuaded by his political mentor, the late KK Shetty to take the next big leap into Legislative Assembly elections. Emerging victorious in 1978, he went on to become the first person of Mangalorean Catholic descent to be inducted into the cabinet of then Chief Minister, Late Devaraj Urs. As an elected official, he held the position of Minister for Housing, Ports and Fisheries along with other additional portfolios. During his tenure as minister, PF Rodrigues made significant contributions to the city of Mangalore - one among them, relocating the KSRTC Bus Station to Bejai from a very cramped area

of the city. A silent crusader who shunned publicity, he was also instrumental in sanctioning Mangalore city’s first public swimming pool at Mangala stadium. This, despite opposition from envious bureaucrats in Bangalore, contended that the city of Mangalore did not need a swimming pool as it nestled along a coastal belt. Following an electoral setback during re-election, PF Rodrigues retired from active politics and returned to Mangalore, resuming his law practice and teaching career. He continued his dedication and tireless devotion to work and society. After a highly accomplished life, at age 72, his end was sudden and unexpected. He encountered a fatal cardiac episode and passed away in March 1996. His loss was immense to his family, friends, and well-wishers.
