A Simple Spring Cleaning Checklist It’s the time of year to roll up your sleeves and do some spring cleaning. Experts point out that it’s helpful to streamline the tools you use to do the job and the tasks you seek to accomplish.

strategies for critical areas of your home. • Stove and range hoods: While you should be cleaning these areas regularly after food preparation, take this opportunity to conduct a more thorough cleaning. Spray cleaner directly on the mess for up to two minutes. Wipe clean with a sponge or cloth. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water. • Sinks and countertops: Sinks and countertops can be a trap for food, grease, grime and soap scum. Generously spray nonporous surfaces with your cleaner then rinse with clean water.
“An all-purpose cleaner and a tough degreasing agent can be used in so many areas of the home,” says Jeff Devlin, a licensed contractor who’s appeared on several home

• Stove exhaust filter: The grease buildup that collects on the stove’s exhaust filter can be a tough nut to crack. In a sink basin, mix 8 ounces of a
concentrated multi-surface cleaner and 1 gallon of hot water and submerge the filter. Place the filter in a sink or dishpan and pour in concentrated cleaner to cover. Allow the filter to soak for 30 minutes. Drain the dishpan and rinse thoroughly with hot water. • Floors: Give your floors a mopping. Mix 4 ounces of cleaning solution with 1 gallon of warm water. Apply with mop or sponge. • Garbage cans and diaper pails: Bags often leak nastiness into the bottom of the garbage can, which can easily be missed when quickly replacing the bag. Turn your cleanser’s nozzle to spray and generously cover the can. Wipe or brush any areas that have any residue. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. • Showers, tubs and tile: Use your cleaning agent at full strength and generously spray surfaces directly. Allow it to penetrate the soap scum for up to two minutes. Do not allow to dry. Wipe away with a coarse sponge or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
• Toilets: Let’s face it. This isn’t anyone’s favorite job but it has to be done. Turn that nozzle to spray and generously spray the outside of the toilet. Wipe clean with a paper towel, then give a quick rinse. • Patio: For patios, outdoor furniture, concrete, vinyl fences and siding, use the same cleaner outdoors: simply spray, then wipe clean with a cloth or sponge and rinse surfaces with clean water. While you’re at it, consider removing grease and grime from tools, engine parts, tires, sports gear and lawn equipment. For efficiency, consider cleaning solutions that don’t require precleaning, such as Mean Green Super Strength Cleaner & Degreaser, the strongest all-purpose cleaner available. More tips for getting your spring to-dos completed can be found at meangreendegreaser.com. “Make spring cleaning simple and effective by using smart strategies on every surface of your home,” said Devlin. Mr. Hałat holds a doctoral degree in musical arts performance and has been teaching at the Institute of Music of the University of Silesia in Cieszyn since 2006. Austin/Central Texas Community Shows Unity At Sunday Vigil
(Continued From Page 01) The South Asian community has been rocked in the last few weeks by a spate of hate crimes marked
by the perpetrators shouting racist comments like “Go back home!” or “go back where you came from!” Two recent attacks include the murder and shooting of two Indian immigrant IT workers in Olathe, Kansas and the shooting of Sikh immigrant at his home in Kent, Washington. The incident in Washington occurred over the past weekend. In response to these crimes, IACT
held a Condolence and Unity vigil at the Texas State Capitol’s south steps. The event drew out a few hundred local residents, from a diverse group including the South Asian community and other ethnic groups. Additionally, the event drew attendance by local officials, including three Austin City Councilmembers: Alison Alter (District 10), Gregario Cesar (District 4), and Jimmy Flannigan (District 6). Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez was also present. The event began with a solemn walk around the south capitol lawn, followed by a few comments from George Thomas, IACT President. Thomas stressed the importance of continued vigilance in the face of hate crimes, and the need to ensure that every single incident is report-
ed to police, thereby allowing authorities to investigate crimes and track trends.
After Thomas spoke, the local officials each took a few moments to express their solidarity with the South Asian community and share their personal perspectives on the current issues. Councilmember Alter talked about the personal nature of this issue, as her children are of South Asian descent. Councilmember Cesar pledged his strong support of the community, and Councilmember Flannigan talked about his district which is home to the largest Asian
population in Austin. Sherriff Hernandez also communicated her support of the community, and her office’s commitment to ensuring safety for all. The event provided a way for the community to come together to express sorrow but also show resolve. “It’s important of the community to come together in moments like this. We need the world to know that we’re aware of what is going on, and we will remain vigilant. Our community will work together to ensure safety and security for all of our residents. I am encouraged and inspired by the strong showing we had today, and IACT will continue to provide leadership on issues like this,” Thomas said.
About The Indian American Coalition of Texas (IACT) Founded in 2005, the Indian American Coalition of Texas is a 501(c) (4) nonprofit that is designed to increase bipartisan political engagement in the Indian American community as well as the larger Austin and Texas demographic. The organization works to ensure participation through education and engagement, which are intended to drive empowerment. Its past accomplishments range from monitoring and reporting on the status of Texas state legislation that could impact its constituents, establishing youth civic engagement programs, and organizing a civic engagement day for Indian Americans that was recognized on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. IACT enjoys bipartisan support and participation by Austin’s and Texas’s elected officials.
Who Wants The Whole Truth? Colleges With Holistic Review By Ryan Murphy Many students assume that colleges only care about grades, GPA, rank, and SAT/ACT scores when determining admissions. Since these are the primary indicators of academic performance in high school, it makes sense that people would consider these the main factors that decide an acceptance or rejection. However, while each college has different methods for measuring a student’s likely future performance and contribution, there has been a widespread trend to use what’s called “holistic review” to determine if a student’s fit for admission. Holistic review--sounds appealing, right?
It should be, unless you’re a student who cranked out long hours of study, acing one class after the next like a robot programmed for perfection. Amazingly enough, colleges are not looking for Perfect Student 1.0; they want people who show passion, curiosity, and humanity. They are not always so interested in seeing where the student has been, but where she is going. So while colleges obviously do care about your academic performance, it is not what makes or breaks an application. It is one piece to a much larger puzzle, one that includes your identity, and your potential. You may have spent a long time
perfecting that academic piece, but unfortunately it won’t be enough to get you into the most selective universities. And even for less prestigious schools, or ones with higher acceptance rates, outstanding academics won’t be enough to guarantee a particular major or a scholarship opportunity.
scores, is passed for Student B, with a 3.5 GPA and above-average SAT scores. Why’s that? Because Student B started her own company. Because Student B spent summers working retail and wrote an articulate essay about the service industry.
The bottom line is that studying hard is no free ticket to places like Stanford or Harvard.
The point is that you cannot take anything for granted on your college application.
While you may think that your hard work should be enough to gain acceptance, it is only a guarantee that you have a seat at the table, that the most selective universities will give your application attention.
Anything that you can list or state as a potential asset should be used.
And it may even be that Student A, with a 4.0 GPA and perfect SAT
If you have that golden ticket, that immaculate academic record, don’t let it go to waste with a tepid application. And if you don’t, work to shine
your rough edges. Like it or not, there are thousands of students competing against you. When faced with these numbers, it’s no time to be humble or to shy away from making yourself stand out.

Young Filmmaker From Pakistan Takes Part In “Inspiring Global Change Through Stories”
By Sumaiya Malik On Tuesday, March 14, Sarah Jahaan Khan, an 18 year old student and film maker from Pakistan took part in a panel discussion at the SXSW called, Inspiring Global Change Through Stories.
tivist who wants to make social change through meaningful film in Pakistan. At a young age Sarah went to Chakwaal, in Punjab, Pakistan.
She decided to make a film about this and show it to bigger organizations who had the power to make a difference in the lives of the girls in these under privileged communities.
Lila Igram, founder of Connecther, a crowd funding non-profit from Austin, had invited her in the panel along with Dr. Alaa Murabit, UN High-Level Commissioner for Health Employment and Economic Growth, and Sakena Yacoobi, founder of Afghan Institute of Learning. Each speaker talked about their experience with women from under privileged areas whether in Pakistan, Afghanistan or the US. Sarah Jahaan Khan said that any scientific information and statistic should have a human face and a real life story so that people are more interested in fixing the problem. Sarah talked about how she got into filmmaking. She said her role model is her mother who is an ac-
ton pickers face due to excessive use of chemical pesticides, and the importance of organic farming was later screened at the Asian Development Banks Judicial Roundtable on Environmental Justice in Colombo. Ever since, Sarah has continued to highlight women stories through film to make a social change. “When people are reminded of the human element, their indifference goes away,” said Sarah. Sarah continues to make films of women who are success stories in Pakistani rural areas and shows these to women in other areas in the hope that the ideas of helping themselves will propagate.
She saw that young girls where given the work of hauling water for their household from wells which were far from home. These girls were missing school as the families had no choice. Sarah realized that climate change was ‘in our face’.
In 2014, Sarah made her first film Harvesting Hope, which won an award at the international Girls Impact the World Film Festival in Harvard and was presented the award by environmentalist and actor Ian Somerhalder.
She gave the example of Fatima, a council member, who set up a kitchen garden after attending one of her films and the social talk that followed. Fatima’s friends did the same and soon all the women around her set up their own kitchen gardens.
The film, which was about the health complications women cot-
Dr. Alaa Murabit of UN added that even the women in the US need ef-
fective role models and should stay clear of ‘the Kardashians!” She emphasized effective role models for young girls and youth so that the women learn to help themselves. Sakena Yacoobi, who set up undercover schools for young girls in Afghanistan in the time of Talibaan and who now runs AIL told the audience that in order to help any group of people, “build the trust and stay with the community, and then do something. Commit [to them] and don’t abandon them. No one will work with you unless you commit long term.” About 80 people attended the panel from different backgrounds who had signed up for SXSW interactive. Connecther film festival awards are coming up on Sunday, April 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Andrews High school on SW Pkwy in Austin. Zoe Viccaji, Singer/Songwriter From Pakistan Performs At The SXSW By Sumaiya Malik Zoe Viccaji was in Austin in October 2016 for the first time on invitation from a friend who himself was visiting to sing in the Sahara Lounge. She loved the musical interaction of Austin so much that she decided to come again in a bigger way. She came as a showcase singer in SXSW 2017! A young woman in late twenties, singer/songwriter Zoe Viccaji arrived two days before her first performance. Zoe sets her aim high, works hard and succeeds. That was her plan for SXSW and she executed it to the T. Her pleasant nature and attractive
personality brought her a bigger audience than she expected. She
rehearsed every night with a new set of musicians who were able to pick up on her eastern style. Zoe said, “I am here for work and all I do is practice with barely a few hours of sleep.” For Austinites, Viccaji was not new. They already knew her on YouTube and through Coke Studios. According to Wikipedia, Viccaji joined Coke Studio in 2010 and collaborated with Strings and Bilal Khan and released the singles Mera Bichra Yaar and Anjane featuring Strings and Bilal Khan.
Mera Bichra Yaar was nominated at 11th Lux Style Awards for Song of the Year. Viccaji performed first at Speakeasy, a bar on Congress Avenue on the night of March 16, and later at the City Hall Amphitheater on March 18. Fans from all backgrounds were at the venues. One could see iphones and Samsungs live streaming Viccaji’s songs through social media. People chanted “Allah-hu” [Dear God] with arms extended upwards to the sky, mimicking her style to show their approval. Ishrat Kundwala, who danced to the tune of Zoe Viccaji at Speakeasy said, “It made me so happy that the music I love and my father loves is playing at SXSW.” She bought Zoe’s CD for her dad.
Zoe started her career at the age of seventeen by joining a local band Ganda Bandas. Few years later she moved to the United States where she studied in Hamilton College, New York. She also worked in stage musicals Mamma Mia! and Chicago, both alongside Sanam Saeed.[9] After returning to Pakistan, she released her debut single Thinking About You in 2009. Zoe Viccaji is open to plans about coming back to Austin. She has met musicians from all backgrounds and attended discussions about music and film interactive at the SXSW. It would not be surprising to see her return either at SXSW next year, or trying a new avenue for which she has already started working hard.

Tucked among far South Austin’s well-manicured lawns, an oasis of fruit trees, vegetables, herbs and ornamentals flourishes in a 40- by 60-foot backyard that serves as both an outdoor laboratory and labor of love for Venkappa Gani and his wife, Ratna.
He left Boulder for Poughkeepsie, New York, where he was offered a position with IBM. Then, while on a trip back to India, he married Ratna.

In 1997, following Venkappa’s 30year engineering career, the couple retired to a neighborhood undergoing construction of hundreds of new homes.
Every year, as they moved up a grade, they were given a bigger plot. Formal education was customarily expected to end at the eighth grade, but as the top student in his class, Venkappa advanced to the local high school—walking three miles to and from school, every day. Graduating at the head of his high school class, he went on to the B.V.B. College of Engineering and Technology, where he again rose to the top his class and graduated with a B.E. in electrical engineering. The next stop for Venkappa was Boulder, Colorado, in 1966, where he earned a M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado.
When a crop exceeds what they can consume—which is often—it’s sold through co-op yard-to-market booths at the Sunset Valley SFC Farmers’ Market on Saturday and the HOPE Farmers Market on Sunday, where the couple can often be seen chatting with customers and sharing gardening tips.
In 2005, the Texas Master Gardeners Association named him Gardener of the Year. Accolades and other projects aside, Venkappa’s home garden continues to be a beloved and comforting personal haven.
He’s a life member of the Travis County Master Gardeners Association, a member of The Garden Club of Austin and a past president of the Austin Organic Gardeners club.
They managed to opt out of sod in favor of soil, and got started planting a border of fruit trees.
To help the village thrive, all students were given a plot of land to cultivate, which required hauling buckets of water to tend their plants.
training and workshops on organic gardening, rainwater collection and solar energy.
Over the years, Venkappa has become a solid fixture in the localgrowers circle.
At the time, the yard was slated as a flat canvas for St. Augustine, but the Ganis had other ideas.
“I grew up in the garden,” says Venkappa—explaining that growing food was at the core of the school curriculum in the farming village where he was born in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka.
cant source of sustenance to Venkappa and Ratna, who are both lifetime vegetarians.
Eventually, IBM led the couple to Austin where the seeds that were planted during elementary school took root in a retirement that’s redefining what’s possible on a modest plot of land, and turned Venkappa into an award-winning and sought-after local gardening expert. Entry to the Ganis’ backyard is via a dense canopy of crimson-flowered Rangoon creeper vine, then suddenly, a wildly prolific, Edenlike setting is revealed. Venkappa appears to have defied any number of well-accepted notions of what can thrive amid Central Texas’ scorching heat, occasional freezes and often subpar soil. Fruit trees—primarily along the edges—include pomegranate, persimmon, papaya, peach, fig, jujube, Texas red grapefruit, Meyer lemon, kumquat, Dorset apple, olive, pineapple guava, Orient pear and banana. In the center of the fertile plot, divided by limestone blocks and brick pathways, are edibles, ornamentals and leafy herbs that are indigenous to just about every corner of the globe and include lamb’s
coli, peas and garlic. Growing up without running water or electricity, Venkappa takes neither for granted. He was among the first to benefit from the City of Austin’s rebate program for solar energy in 2004, and put his electrical engineering degrees to work to install solar panels on his roof. City rebates also came into play the following year with the installation of two 1,500-gallon tanks for rainwater harvesting. As is his tradition, Venkappa never uses chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. A hearty compost heap is the source of an occasional nutrient boost to the soil, and if there’s a secret ingredient, it might be his all-natural Gani Coco Coir product. It’s made by extracting coconut husk fibers from coconut shells and compressing them into lightweight blocks that serve as an extremely water-retentive planting medium. Venkappa sells the blocks at various gardening centers around town. The backyard garden is a signifi-

When asked whether Ratna’s love of the garden is at the same level as that of her husband’s, she says unequivocally “I love it more!” And then she offers one of her favorite ways to cook their bounty: “Add whole mustard seeds and whole cumin seeds to hot oil,” she says. “When the seeds start to pop, add onions and vegetables and sauté. Finish with curry powder, salt, lemon and tamarind, to taste.” Yum. Reprinted from EdibleAustin magazine

the difficult choice: to move or not to move. Luckily, there are many simple changes you can incorporate into your daily routine to squeeze in that extra bit of movement, such as parking a bit farther away from your destination or opting to take the stairs versus riding the elevator. Additionally, experts recommend isometrics, a form of exercise that involves tensing muscles without moving them, which has been shown to be an effective way to increase strength and boost metabolism, as well as maintain a healthy weight and improve overall health -- all in ways that fit a busy schedule. In fact, with just 15 minutes per day, isometric exercises have proven to increase strength by 30 percent over six weeks, according to studies. Among its many health benefits, isometrics can also improve stamina, combat osteoporosis, reduce pain and even lower blood pressure. While it’s often today’s technology that keeps people strapped to their chairs and chained to their couches, certain new technological advancements encourage just the opposite,
serving as exceptional healthy lifestyle resources. One such program harnessing the benefits of isometrics is Activ5 from Activbody. This new and innovative portable, handheld fitness device works with a downloadable companion app to coach users through fun and simple fiveminute, low-impact isometric workouts that can be performed discreetly at work, in the comfort of home or when traveling. Featuring over 100 unique workouts personalized for users’ individual fitness levels, it includes a suite of games to make fitness more fun -- as though you have an enthusiastic, animated personal trainer right in your pocket. “Most of us sit way too much. Although we all want to be more fit, for many of us it’s nearly impossible to carve out time to get to the gym,” says Activbody CEO, Leo Griffin. “We wanted to create a way for people to get a full body workout quickly and effectively during their downtime, while still having fun and being entertained.” The Activ5 app also measures data such as strength, precision and other personal metrics, giving users an opportunity to track their progress. To learn more about isometric exercise or to download the app, visit TryActiv5.com. While the idea of heading to the gym after a jam-packed day may sound exhausting, making health a priority and incorporating some extra movement in your day is easier than ever before. Whether it’s as simple as playing with the kids in the yard or squeezing in a five-minute game using a fitness app at your desk, by keeping fitness fun and convenient, you will be more likely to embrace it as part of a healthy lifestyle. The program lasted nearly 4 hours and was well moderated by two young emcees who provided insights into the various ragas and shared interesting tidbits about composers. They also regaled the audience with their outstanding solo performances. There were 33 songs performed and the list of participants included many seasoned performers as well as young ones who recently commenced their musical
training.
There were also a few who were new to Austin and availed the opportunity to showcase their proficiency on the local stage. Most performances were accompanied by ‘mrudanga’ or ‘tabla’ which complimented the singing and provided a lively, concert-like experience. The coffee break half-way through the program provided a wonderful opportunity for everyone to socialize and offer appreciation in person to the artists who had performed till then. The Pancha Veena (5 Veena) instrumental performance needs special mention. 5 women on their veene played the Purandara dasa kriti- Sharanu Siddhi Vinayaka in beautiful unison, which was appreciated by one and all. A visiting parent from Bengaluru, India, also took to the stage with her singing and later by speaking
a few words of appreciation and encouragement. The program was co-sponsored by the various music schools in the Austin metro area and was well represented by performances from students of these schools. The teachers provided guidance and moral support to their students, encouraged all the performers by their presence and also performed during the event. Overall, the event provided an interesting amalgamation of fresh and professional talent. Although it was held thousands of miles away from home, Sangeethotsava helped in continuing the tradition of appreciating the contributions of our forefathers to the wonderful art form of medieval India; thanks to Austin Kannada Sangha! A Passport To South Asia Through Indie Meme Film Festival
(Continued From Page 01)
Four days of independent cinema, the festival promises travel into the minds of thoughtful people from South Asia, from an array of cultures similar in many ways to us in the US and alien in others. The festival will be an intimate association and a rare insight one does not get when travelling as a tourist to Asia. Founded by Alka Bhanot and Tripti Bhatnagar, the festival starts on a Thursday night with a member appreciation party. Each member can bring one guest for free to see Shor Se Shuruaat, an anthology of 7 short films linked together by the idea of shows, made by young filmmakers (they will be present), preceded by a member mixer and announcements to thank the sponsors. This show is only available to the first 100 memers who register on the festival website. We asked Alka Bhanot, which is her favorite film in the lineup. Expecting the answer to be Lip-
stick Under my Burka, a much talked about controversial film banned in India, Bhanot surprised us with her answer. “Chronicles of Hari [my favorite] is like the nuggets you find in a festival.” Friday is the opening night. Red Carpet, glitz and glamor, press, fanfare! All the filmmakers will be present to answer questions. The festival will have total of nine full-length feature films and 5 short films. Bhanot is excited about all of them. Another film greatly anticipated is An Insignificant Man; a documentary based on 400 hours of live footage edited to 100 minutes about Arvind Kejriwal, a polarized man in India today. The film follows Kejriwal and his new insurgent polital party called, The Common Man’s Party. The film follows the chaos of Indian politics and agendas of politicians. Bhanot mentioned The New Machine, a short film directed by Sai Promod, the programming director of the festival. This film was shot entirely in the US and is about how people adapt to new technology when old machines become obso-
lete.
Mixers around the movie theater follow the festival and its films. The opening night mixer is at Manuel’s, an upscale Mexican restaurant a minute away from the Arbor Theater.

What To Know Before Replacing Home Flooring Whether you are building a new house or making upgrades on a current home, there is a lot to consider when it comes to flooring. It’s important to keep in mind that the choices available have changed in recent years.
Indie Meme has an impressive list of sponsors backing up the festival. The festival is co-presented by MovieOK, Daman and KLRU are sponsors from last year continuing their support. Star Gold, Sukha International, Arts in Context, Cultural Arts City of Austin, HEB, Congnitive Scale, and the Austin South Asian. Festival badges are currently at Early Bird Special price. Individual movie tickets are also available. Please refer to website below for ticket information and trailers of films in the lineup. Join the festival and travel to South Asia. http://imffaustin.weebly.com/
Choose Style When people choose flooring products, they may be ruling out a large swath of options because of the associations they have with specific materials. For example, you may not associate vinyl with luxury but new products on the market are redefining vinyl flooring, offering fashion-forward high-quality products in striking elegant designs. Ensure Durability If you love the look of traditional hardwood floors, consider all of your options. New vinyl technologies are allowing homeowners to
get the same elegant style engineered to withstand the wear and tear to which wood is susceptible. For example, Mohawk SolidTech, a luxury vinyl tile, has a thick, rigid construction and planks that look and feel just like real hardwood, but are designed to resist scratches, scuffs and indentation, and maintain stability under heat and temperature change. The planks also fit together to create an impenetrable lock so that the floors remain waterproof and odor-free. Consider Maintenance Make sure the flooring you opt for is easy to clean and requires very little maintenance. If you have pets, you may want to consider getting extra protection with a special warranty designed for pet owners, such as Mohawk’s All Pet Protection and Warranty, which covers all pets and all accidents. More information can be found at MohawkFlooring.com. Before making flooring decisions, get savvy and weigh all your current options. These days, it is possible to find flooring products that combine style, durability and low maintenance (StatePoint)
Shopping Local Can Benefit You And Your Community If you have home improvement plans this spring, it’s important to consider where you will be doing
For many people, the first stores to come to mind are big box retailers because of the widespread assump-
lection and better prices. Keep in mind, though, that when it comes to items needed for your home projects -- whether it be new flooring, paint or a kitchen renovation -- more often than not, experts say that your local independent retailer can offer as good or better selection, be competitive with pricing, and provide a superior customer service experience. What’s more, shopping at local businesses can benefit your household and the community. At a locally owned store, you will be more likely to find interesting items and products that set your home apart.

owners who pay taxes locally, hire locally and may be more inclined to support community charities and organizations. You may also find independent retailers that can offer some of the same benefits as a large chain. For example, when small business owners belong to a cooperative, they come together to scale buying power, access goods and services at a lower cost, and create opportunities not available to them as individual businesses. For you, this can mean more and better choices of products and affordability. In the case of Flooring America for example, this means being able to offer a wide selection of products,
including hard surfaces like hardwood, laminate and tile, and soft surface flooring, paint, cabinets for kitchen renovations and even closet organization solutions. Their retailers can be found in local communities throughout the country, with a varying product selection depending on location. So, if you are looking to make home improvements this spring, check out your local retailers that not only offer great product selection, but also contribute to your community in a positive way. But Birbal was not fazed by the ridicule. He said, “I too had the same dream,
We walked a long way but couldn’t find any place with water. So the only solution was for each of us to lick the other clean.”
Other ministers in Akbar’s court were often jealous of Birbal because he was Akbar’s favorite, and so they were always trying to outwit and get the better of him. One day, one of the ministers told the court about a dream he had the previous night. In the dream, both he and Birbal were walking along a wet road. The minister slipped and fell into a crystal pool that was filled with flowers and it was like falling into a perfumed bath. than 4500 years ago. It was abandoned in about 1900 BCE, 600 years later, and then was a lost city for several thousand years. Then it was rediscovered about 100 years ago, in the 1920s. It was one of the earliest planned cities, built at about the same time that the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Crete were flourishing. Besides Mohenjo-daro, there were many other cities and townships, but Mohenjo-daro was the largest city of the Indus Valley Civilization, also known as the Harappan Civilization. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilization spanned most of what is now Pakistan and North India. Mohenjo-daro was the most advanced city of its time. the hook for unexpected medical expenses. Having to pay for even a sliver of that cost could throw your budget for a loop, and in many cases, the first casualties of a budget cut are the stress-reducing, mood-boosting, quality-of-life activities. With that in mind, would you be willing to give up the following things if an unexpected medical event led to a pile of bills from a hospital visit?
Whether it’s gut-busting hilarity at the new comedy club or sweating out those toxins at the hottest yoga class in town, these activities cost money. However, when the unex-
Today, the average cost of a hospital stay is $11,000, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and standard health insurance plans may leave you on
1. Weekly date night, girls’ night or any night out with friends. Are you afraid of missing out on fun with friends and loved ones? Well, if you are trying to pay a hospital bill, you just might suffer from FOMO trying to pay out-of-pocket expenses that are putting a strain on finances. 2. The gym membership. Working out makes you feel your best and
can potentially stave off illness. Why side-step your fitness goals following an unexpected hospitalization because of finances? Once you are back on your feet, medical bills shouldn’t put you behind. Insurance like Aflac’s offers flexible coverage that can help protect income for such daily expenses. 3. Streaming video services. Since cutting the cord, you have been able to keep up with the latest genius programming online. Even though a membership with various streaming video services doesn’t seem like a lot of money, having to pay for a broken arm or unexpected surgery can mean that you need to cut inessential expenses – including your ability to binge watch the latest show. 4. Those daily lattes. A daily latte can add up to more than $1,000 a year, according to an employee survey on payroll tax and spending
habits by Accounting Principals. While many people believe that major medical coverage is enough, high-deductible health plans are on the rise, which could leave you paying $1,000 or more before your coverage kicks in to help. Should that mean saying goodbye to the daily dose of caffeine that gets you through your workday? To help keep your lifestyle healthy, consider supplemental hospital indemnity insurance, such as plans offered by Aflac. To learn more, visit aflac.com/hospital. For many people, it is already hard enough to budget for everyday activities and expenses, let alone cover the costs of an unexpected hospitalization. Even if you are young and healthy, it’s important to prepare for whatever life may throw your way. (StatePoint)
Smart Tips To Prevent Identity Theft More than 13 million U.S. consumers fall victim to identity theft each year, according to Javelin Strategy and Research, with more than $15 billion stolen. Fortunately for consumers, many of these crimes are preventable.
“Falling victim to identity theft can be financially devastating for many consumers, a consequence that only further emphasizes the importance of safeguarding your
personal information,” says Guy Abramo, president of Experian Consumer Services. The identity protection experts at Experian recommend the following tips to better protect yourself.
• Protect your home: Your home is your castle and identity thieves know this is where your most valuable possessions are likely stored. Diminish your vulnerability by us-
ing a safe to store sensitive information, such as birth certificates, social security cards and passports. You should also use a shredder to reduce your paper trail. Pay and immediately shred utility bills, credit card statements and other paperwork that includes your personal information. • Be cautious at work: “Familiar fraud” is common and occurs when a victim’s identity is stolen by someone he or she knows. At work, store personal items like wallets and smartphones in a locked cabinet. Don’t copy or scan sensitive documents, as memory functions can save your data. At night, turn your computer off and sign out of sensitive sites. Change passwords often. If you have any concerns with the way your company stores personnel records, talk to your employer or human resources department about their protocols. • Get smart with your smartphone: Smartphones and other devices can be a data goldmine for identity
thieves. Use locking features on all your devices, including your laptop. Don’t use automatic login features and always log off when you are finished. Always keep your computer’s anti-virus software up-todate and be cautious when using public wi-fi. Finally, when upgrading your mobile device to the latest model, be sure to scrub all the data from your old device before switching to your new phone. • Monitor your credit: Consider enrolling in a credit monitoring product such as Experian CreditWorks, which offers additional peace of mind through real-time notifications of any changes to your Experian Credit Report. Changes to your report are important to review, as they may be signs of fraud. The newest CreditWorks feature, Experian CreditLock, can be especially helpful in taking greater control over your credit information. This product feature al-
lows you to easily lock and unlock your Experian Credit Report in real-time without formally freezing your credit report, which can be a cumbersome process. By locking your Experian Credit Report, creditors no longer have access to it (except for soft inquiries from creditors with whom you already have a financial relationship), which means criminals can’t apply for credit in your name. This should help deter identity thieves, as well as block unwanted inquiries that result in extensions of credit, which can impact your credit scores. In addition, if a creditor or lender tries to access your report, you’ll receive a real-time alert via email and app notification so you can take action immediately. By safeguarding your information and monitoring your credit, you can better ward off the threat of identity theft. (StatePoint)

knowledge, you can save money, protect the environment and bring the best features of your home to life. Here are four quick tips to get you started: • Opt for LED. By 2020, half of all residential sockets will have converted to LEDs, which is good news, as LEDs can last over 10 years and use up to 85 percent less energy than the traditional lighting you may use today. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, wattages and color temperatures, they are becoming increasingly affordable,
too. Just a few years ago, LEDs topped $40, but today you can find a high-quality LED for less than $5. • Pay attention to color tempera-
tures, wattages, shapes and quality of light. A few lighting facts can help you make useful purchases. For example, an average 60-watt replacement bulb would require about 800 lumens. The higher this number is, the brighter the light will be. And remember: when you invest in an LED that’s expected to last more than a decade, you want one that’s going to reliably live up to your expectations, so brands that have been around for a while and have proven their commitment to quality truly matter in this space.

Active spaces like laundry rooms and playrooms can benefit from an energetic daylight bulb. Feature pure, clean lights in kitchens, bathrooms and craft and hobby spaces that tend to benefit from light that delivers exceptional color contrast and brightness. Today, select manufacturers such as GE, are taking the guesswork out of the equation by listing whether each bulb has a warm or cool tone and by offering room and use recommendations on the packaging. A warm white light will have a lower K (Kelvin) number, while a cool daylight will have a higher K number.
