Heavy Rains In Tamil Nadu Very heavy rain returned to Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, battering the already-ravaged coastal areas and bringing life to a grinding halt in
Chennai and Puducherry. Heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Chembarambakkam reservoir (25 centimetres between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday) forced the authorities to discharge water at the rate of 20,000 cubic feet per second into the Adyar river. The Chennai Collector issued a flood warning, asking people living along the river to move to safer places. Roads were flooded and essential services, including trains and buses, were suspended in most locations. Electricity was turned off in some areas as a precautionary measure. (Continued On Page 13)

Diwali Celebrated With Fun And Festivity At BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Austin, Tx (Continued From Page 01) Across North America, thousands of volunteers begin preparations months in advance of the festivities - from decoration design and creation to food preparation for the annakut (offering of vegetarian dishes to Bhagwan). Celebrating Diwali with great enthusiasm and excitement inspires every generation of Indians to honor their deeply rooted Hindu heritage. The five days of Diwali are filled with optimism and enthusiasm as volunteers and devotees work side by side, looking past their differences, to build the annakut and prepare for Diwali events at each mandir. Inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, devotees welcome guests to the mandir with well wishes for the New Year. Swamis visit with community members to offer their prayers for peace and
prosperity among families. This year, BAPS Mandirs across North
America marked the auspicious festival of Diwali with fireworks a n d cultural exhibitions s o visitors would f i n d their experiences b o t h entertaining a n d educational. “ D i wali is my favorite festival b e cause
of the excitement that fills the air when the festival nears. But having recently migrated to US, I did not know what to expect.” said Mukesh Zala, “But after coming to the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Austin, TX. I felt like I was in India. I experienced Indian culture while getting a taste of fine Indian cuisine. Every person I met had an expression of warmth and happiness on their face. I truly felt at home.” “Diwali is that time of the year when family, friends and relatives get together and strengthen their bonds through various festivities. Being away from India should not cause a lapse in our traditions”, said Ravjibhai Patel. “Preparations for the festivities begin months in advance. Devotees, young and old, sacrifice their time to help in creating decorations, food preparation, children’s Diwali celebration ar-
rangements, as well as decorating the stage for the most significant ritual of Diwali, the Annakut,” concluded, Kamalbhai Dhanani. Diwali is also a time when children look forward to the joy it brings. On November 15th, 2015 from 1PM to 6PM, the Children’s Diwali Celebration took place. The celebration was as much fun as it was educational. The children learned the history and origin of this festival, played a variety of exciting games, and were given an assortment of gifts and goodies. This year His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj celebrated Diwali and Annakut in Sarangpur, Gujarat, India. He blessed the devotees on the New Year day. (Continued On Page 16)

Tips To Help Your Student Become A Better Learner
By Hao Lam Between Common Core and the new SATs, the education landscape is changing. It can be just as daunting of a task for the parent to tackle a hard subject as it can be for the child.
Helpful tips for your student’s learning habits: Visual • Turn notes into pictures, charts or maps. • Avoid distractions (windows, etc.).
• Learn the big picture first and then focus on the details. • Make mind and concept maps instead of outlines. • Color code parts of new concepts in all notes. • Use flash cards when trying to study vo-
Knowing this is helpful for tackling the toughest subjects for your student, whether it is English, math,or science. Below, you can familiarize yourself with three generally recognized learning styles: visual, auditory and kinesthetic.
To help your student exceed his or her academics goals, a local resource, Best in Class, offers a variety of customized, supplemental enrichment courses and tutoring options to ensure your students are equipped with the tools they need this school year.
Below areexamplesfrom Indiana University’s Bepko Learning Centerto determine which kind of learner your child is,and the best ways to help yourstudent succeed.
Visual • Uses visual objects such as graphs, charts and pictures. • Reads body language well and has a good perception of aesthetics. • Able to memorize and recall various information. • Tends to remember things that are written down. • Learns better in lectures by watching them. Auditory • Retains information through hearing and speaking. • Often prefers to be told how to do things and then summarizes the main points out loud to help with memorization. • Notices different aspects of speaking. • Often has talents in music and may concentrate better with soft music playing in the background. Kinesthetic • Likes to use a hands-on approach to learn new material. • Is generally good in math and science. • Would rather demonstrate how to do something rather than verbally explain it. • Usually prefers group work more than others.
Kinesthetic • Take study breaks often. • Learn new material while doing something active (e.g., read a textbook while on a treadmill). • Chew gum while studying. • Work while standing. • Try to take classes with instructors who encourage demonstrations and fieldwork.
Deciphering what type of learner your child is can help him or her succeed if they are having difficulties learning.
Types of learners:
words. • Discuss materials in a study group. • Read textbooks out loud. • Listen to wordless background music while studying.

Pakistani-American Physicians Compete in Ironman 70.3 in Austin

On November 8, Austin hosted
It’s a fitness challenge taking
Among the 2140 contestants, were three Pakistani physicians who came to Austin from their hometown cities in the US. They successfully completed the triathlon! It was a proud day for Dr. Bilal Ansari from Indiana, and Dr. Zaki Anwar and Dr. Syed Ather Yusoof of Illinois. Bilal Ansari and Zaki Anwar have completed the full Ironman Triathlon before this and Dr. Ather Yusoof is the first Pakistani American ½ marathon finisher. Asked about why they are so committed to Ironman, Dr. Bilal Ansari said, “ Ironman is … a way of life for me.
Ironman 70.3, a highly publicized triathlon that includes 1.2 miles swim in Decker Lake, a 56 miles bike ride passing through rolling
around eight strenuous hours to complete and many are unable to reach the finish line.
It teaches me discipline when [life is] chaotic, path when I feel lost, strength on my weak days and sense of fulfillment when empty.”
They all agree that it’s a race that you have to train for and seriously set goals. They worked with trainers to remain fit over the years and feel accomplished whenever they cross the finish line. In the process, they also motivate their families to remain healthy and set superior goals. Bilal was visiting his sister in law Dr. Farheen Yousuf and her husband Dr. Faisal Syed. The couple cheered for the three athletes with their families at the finish line. Farheen and the kids, wearing the official orange triathlon uniforms, watched the exciting ending of the race and flew the Pakistani flag when it was time to take pictures. Dr. Bilal said that he flies Pakistan’s flag to remind himself where
he came from, and feels proud about what can be achieved especially when all we hear is negativity about Pakistan. The first Ironman race started in 1978 and got bigger and bigger every year. In 2005, the Ironman 70.3 race series was introduced. It consists of a number of qualifying races at various worldwide locations culminating in a world championship with athletes drawn from the qualifying events. Austin, being one of the fittest cities in the US, provides the perfect landscape for swimming, cycling and running. Tribute To Famous Pakistani Vocalist Habib Wali Mohammed In Austin By Sumaiya Malik On December 5, Pakistani Austin Community will host a tribute to renowned (late) ghazal singer, Habib Wali Mohammed, at the Lakeway Activity Center at 7 PM. The musical evening is a public event organized by Zareen and Pervez Jameel of Lakeway. Rizwan Wali Mohammed, the son of the late singer, will entertain the audience with songs, which made Habib Wali Mohammed famous. A singer in his own right, Rizwan Wali Mohammed received classical and semi classical training from his late father from early years and followed his style. Both performed together a number of times and slowly Rizwan developed his own style as well. Besides ghazal, Rizwan Wali Muhammad performs musical pieces in Geet, Folk, Pakistani, Hindi, Punjabi & Bengali songs. The Austin South Asian asked
Pervez Jameel why he thought of bringing RWM to Austin. Pervez said he was a fan of Habib Wali Mohammed and knew the late legend’s son from his Boy Scout days in Pakistan. Social media kept them in touch and Austin’s music fame heightened Rizwan’s interest in coming to the city. Rizwan plans to sing his father’s ghazals as well as his own released songs. Most of the Pakistani community plans to attend, as Habib Wali Mohammed is to date, one of the most respected singers of his time. Well known and respected for his
music and style, songs like Aaj janay ki zid na karo stole the heart of millions in the 1970. Habib Wali Mohammed continued to sing until the last few years and passed away in 2014. Rizwan Wali Mohammed is settled in California and travels for his performances. He also carries on his family business. Currently he is on tour in Pakistan and will arrive in Austin on December 4. Tips To Make Music At Cost-Effective Ways Home With Your Family To Heat Your Home
Music enriches lives and offers people of all ages a number of benefits -- from improving academic outcomes for children to relieving stress for working adults and even helping seniors keep their minds.

Indeed, social harmony is higher within families when young people listen to music, according to a study conducted by Frontiers in Psychology.
Look for a family-friendly option, such as Casio’s CGP-700, which features an icon-based menu and a Color Touch Interface that enables musicians to choose tones, select rhythms, split and layer sounds -- fun options that will come in handy during sing-a-longs.

Here are three ways to get your family started: Enroll Take advantage of school music programs, from choral groups to band to piano lessons, your child’s school can provide a great foundation for music education. Supplement this at-school learning by encouraging children to practice at home. Private lessons are a great option and often affordable when taught by an older student. Online tutorials can also prove helpful. Your school’s music teacher can be a great resource for these possibilities. Get Equipped Having a piano in your home will not only help ensure that your kids will practice music

Field Trip Take the whole family to local music events and performances, such as the local orchestra, musical theater or your favorite band coming to town. Exposure to a wide-range of musical genres has great cultural value and will get the members of your family thinking about music theory without even realizing it. Take time to make and appreciate music at home and in the community. (Statepoint)

Intolerance in India
(Continued from page 1) The movement that began with writers returning state awards has spread to scientists, historians and filmmakers. Some 200 academics teaching in India and abroad have issued a joint statement against rising “intolerance and bigotry. Even Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have spoken on the issue. Opposition politicians have demanded a parliamentary debate on intolerance in the ongoing winter session. They have cited the killing of rationalists MM Kalburgi and Govind Pansare, as well as the lynching of a man over suspicions he consumed beef, as examples of rising intolerance in the country. However, many insist that India has suddenly not become intolerant under the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. Books and films have been banned for as long as we can remember. Writers and artists have been hounded and threatened by political parties and groups across the country. And as commentator Mukul Kesavan says, the main opposition Congress party does not exactly have a stellar record in defending liberal values. So is India seeing a new form of intolerance driven by majoritarian politics? Or, as
analyst TN Ninan says, some of the intolerance is related to the “social churn linked to modernisation” of a complex nation? Sanjay Subrahmanyam, who teaches in the US and France, is one of India’s most distinguished and provocative historians and biographers. I spoke to him on whether he thought India had become intolerant under Mr Modi’s watch. Intolerance in India is not a new thing. So why are we suddenly so outraged and worried about what has been happening after the BJP government came to power last year? I have not been in India for almost a year. So my impressions come from a distance. However, it seems that the concerns stem from the fact that the BJP has such a massive majority in parliament, which may seem an occasion for them to impose their agenda in a way they could not in the period 1998-2004. Further, the current federal government speaks consistently with (at least) two voices. One is more reasonable, reassuring and tolerant; the other more strident and aggressive. This ingrained, almost structural, duplicity is being constantly refined as a strategy of “good cop, bad cop”. It would seem natural to worry that this will become a pat-
tern for the five years of this government. Do you believe India has actually become more intolerant? Isn’t it the case that Congress and many other non-BJP state governments don’t have a leg to stand on, insofar as liberal values are concerned? It is not a question of “India”, but of the upper echelons of the political class and their attitudes. It is true that “liberal values” have always been fragile in independent India. The BJP is not alone in the matter of attacking them. Few parties actually incarnate any real political liberalism. But should that make the BJP immune to criticism? Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses media representatives after arriving for the winter session of Parliament in New Delhi on November 26, 2015 Mr Modi says he is committed to ‘work for the welfare of people of all sections and religion’ If I am being robbed by two pickpockets, is that any consolation? If the only criticism of the current political climate was politically motivated, and came from political parties with a murky past of their own (like the Congress), it would not be so much of an issue. But it comes from many members of civil society who feel threatened,
and when they protest in a nonviolent way, they are told brutally to leave the country and go elsewhere. That is the crude language of majoritarianism. It is being felt in many institutions. My friends in the universities are also feeling it more and more. So how different is that intolerance with this one under the BJP regime? Are we panicking too much? There are certainly reasons for concern when a certain type of intimidation and bullying becomes a part of the normal language of public discourse. The BJP is not the only group to do this, but they are the ones with the power in many parts of India. If I lived in Pakistan, my concern would be with the Salafis; if I lived in France, it would be with the Front National, who also use a majoritarian language to say “either become French on my terms, or face the consequences”. This needs to be protested, just as the 1975 Emergency needed to be resisted, or Nandigram [killings] needed to be protested. Why should we make an exception for the BJP’s bullying? How tolerant has India been as a civilisation? As a historical space, India has been no more or less virtuous than any other part of the world.
Why do we also need to claim that we are better than everybody else? It is precisely because we are not, that we need to examine our own present as well as our past with a critical eye. The student of Indian history finds no lack of violence of all sorts in the Indian past, whether based on religion, caste, colour, xenophobia, or political jockeying. Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and other supporters of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party march toward the Rashtrapati Bhawan or Presidential Palace during a protest in New Delhi, India, Saturday, Nov. 7, “ As a historical space, India has been no more or less virtuous than any other part of the world.” There was never a “golden age” in India, despite what all stripes of myth-makers like to claim. Yes, there were moments and spaces of toleration, or cosmopolitan coexistence. But these were actually interesting exceptions, not the rule.

Modi At COP21 Meeting
(Continued from page 1) Addressing the Leaders Event at the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change here on Monday evening, Mr. Modi said the developed world should ratify Kyoto’s second commitment in the period up to 2020, after which developing countries have pledged to begin their own voluntary actions. The Indian Prime Minister’s reference to the Protocol stood out at the COP21 conference, where the discussions were mostly futurefocussed, for the post-2020 era. The first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol ended in 2012 and many advanced nations have baulked at engaging in mitigation actions, looking at domestic political compulsions. In a clear message that the onus of mitigation fell on the West, Mr. Modi said in an equitable system emissions reduction should be consistent with the carbon space that nations occupy. “Developed countries must fulfil
their responsibility to make clean energy affordable and accessible to all in the developing world,” he said, and wanted the $100 billion a year plan for assistance from the rich to poor nations by 2020 expedited. Mr. Modi demanded that the rich nations meet their obligations in a credible and transparent manner. Apparently referring to the pressure that countries like India may face under a Paris deal, he said he welcomed stock-taking that was done in a transparent manner, where it covered both support and commitment based on the principle of differentiation. The U.N.’s principles of equity and Common But Differentiated Responsibilities should firmly underpin any formulation. Acknowledging the reality that conventional energy sources such as coal would continue to be used at present, the Prime Minister said funds were necessary to clean up coal-based generation. up, he said.

Balakrishnan, 2016 Round Rock ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, advanced to the state Teacher of the Year program after being named 2016 Region 13 Teacher of the Year. Balakrishnan was selected as one of three state finalists in August. Balakrishnan has been an educator for nine years, six of which have been at Sommer as a founding staff member. “We are so excited to celebrate Ms. Balakrishnan and her outstanding efforts and passion,” said Dr. Steve Flores, Superintendent of Schools. “World class schools start with car-
ing educators working tirelessly for students, and she exemplifies that mission. She is a special teacher, a champion for TAG students, and we are proud to call her a member of our Round Rock ISD family.” Teravista fifth-grade teacher Stephanie Stoebe also received the honor of Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2012. Balakrishnan will now advance to the National Teacher of the Year program, whose winner is announced by the President of the United States in the spring during a Rose Garden ceremony. If chosen for as National Teacher of the Year, Balakrishnan would take a year
sabbatical from classroom instruction and serve as an ambassador for the teaching profession. While accepting the award, Balakrishnan said Round Rock ISD has been her home and thanked Dr. Flores, district officials, and the Texas Association of School Administrators for bestowing the honor. “Thank you so much for investing faith in me to represent Texas,” Balakrishnan said as she accepted the award. “Although I am standing here, I represent all 39 educators that are here, representing the best in the state.”

New Technology Can Help Small Businesses Thrive
“The pace of technological development is as staggering as the ever-changing ways that consumers engage and utilize it. To stay competitive to consumers and to employees, small businesses need to adopt and incorporate online technology into their everyday business operations,” says Seong Ohm, senior vice president of merchandise business services at Sam`s Club. To help entrepreneurs navigate new technology and embrace the evolving business operations landscape, Ohm offers six tips for small business success:
cards, which more securely protect consumers. Small business owners can rely on merchant services experts to become EMV chip cardcompliant, affordably and without hassle. • Be visible: Even if your business is centrally a brick-andmortar operation, the importance of having an online presence cannot be overstated.

To avoid bearing liability for fraudulent credit charges, businesses must upgrade terminals to accept EMV chip-enabled credit
It’s not enough to simply have a website, you need to be discovered. Google frequently changes the way it determines search results rankings. Invest in search engine optimization (SEO) not once, but periodically, to conform to Google’s make-or-break formulas. A solid social media strategy and mobile capacity for your site will
also positively impact your search ranking. Put the marketing books away and lean on digital marketing experts to audit your current online presence and build a strategy that works for your budget and grows your customer base. • Stay connected: You may be the one pulling the trigger on big decisions, but that doesn’t mean you are expected to know it all. Seek advice from trusted industry peers or a local SCORE mentor through LinkedIn and social media. Make time for webinars and networking events. Most importantly, stay connected to friends and family during times of stress. • Get smart about taxes: Set up a legal entity for your business online. This will allow you to hold on to more of your income and increase your asset and liability protections. Business taxes can be more expensive and complicated than personal filing, so find an accountant that gets your business. You can greatly benefit from the assistance
of online accounting experts. They will help you take advantage of deductions and tax credits and assist you in filing your frequent, varied deadlines on time to avoid penalty. • Safeguard your data: Small businesses are often targets of identity theft. Will Your Smartphone Withstand Everyday Wear And Tear? Unless you’re the number one ranked UFC middleweight fighter, you’re likely not going to be able to bend the new iPhone 6s Plus. But you stand a very good chance of dropping your pricey smartphone on a hard surface, dropping it in the toilet or leaving it unattended in the hands of your kids. While it will help to get a case, it’s also a good idea to invest in a product designed to endure a little abuse.
The findings? Despite new ion-strengthened Retina HD displays, all phone screens break equally when they hit a hard surface, but the new iPhone 6s Plus, which has been reinforced with 7000 series aluminum, was truly tougher than the previous models. In addition to Rockhold’s scrutiny,

The Samsung Galaxy Note5 also withstood 170 pounds. “Both manufacturers have responded to Bendgate with significant improvements on the three phones we tested. This is great news for consumers,” says Jessica Hoffman vice president of global communications for SquareTrade. • Face-down drops are still the most common phone hazard.
But which new smartphone is durable enough for you? No matter if you choose an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy or another phone, it’s important to research before you buy.
Though manufacturers tout new and improved glass, all three phones shattered when dropped face down on pavement.
SquareTrade, a protection plan provider for smartphones, tablets and other electronics, recently asked mixed martial artist and UFC fighter Luke Rockhold to find out if Apple had increased the durability of its new phones. Rockhold performed two tests on the phones: a Rockhold Roundhouse and a Submission Bend Test.

• The Note5 fares better in extreme cold. Though the Note5 was the easiest to drop and break, it scored the highest in temperature durability.
Extreme temperatures impact a phone’s ability to hold a full charge and shorten the lifespan of the phone’s battery. Lila Igram, the founder and CEO, along with Dr. Zarmeena Vendal (President) and Shadia Igram (board member), worked hard to put together an evening of inspiration, discussion and cinema about women who help themselves.
“By rebranding what it means to be a man, I hope to empower male athletes to raise the bar for all men on campus to begin respecting and protecting their fellow female students.”
They presented four women who are making a powerful difference in their communities. Sangat Performance By Planet Music Of South Asia Institute And Butler School Of Music By Sumaiya Malik On November 15, the Asian American Resource Center hosted ‘Sangat – Featuring Raga-based fusion music’. A diverse ensemble of twelve talented musicians and vocalists from Pakistan, and the US, performed together playing composition pieces of Ustad Nafees, classical Ragas fused with jazz and new ways to collaborate through music. The flowing harmony of Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma had feet tapping and heads swooning as the ‘dhoom rocked with the boom’. It was an afternoon performance with a packed house; the grand finale of three years of hard work where musician students from NAPA Pakistan came to the Butler’s School of Music at UT to collaborate and form a mixed ensemble. The idea was to learn from each other. Musicians from UT went to Pakistan as well to understand music there. Ahsan Shabbir and Arslan Pervaiz worked hard on the NAPA curriculum to make it

Heavy Rain Brings Huge Losses To Chennai Residents
(Continued From Page 01) Most flights from and to Chennai were delayed, and those who landed found it tough to get out of the place, since south Chennai, on the fringes of which the airport is located, was among the worst af-

How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint At Home This Winter 14
When temperatures drop, household use of fossil fuels rises in order to keep homes warm and comfortable. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
In fact, more than one million households nationwide already heat with biomass pellet stoves rather than burn more expensive and damaging fossil fuels like oil -- and such stoves can even be retrofitted into existing fireplaces as an insert.
Austin South Asian | December 2015
Pellet composition varies depending on regional resources, but is typically comprised of a mix of sawdust, waste paper, residual forest waste and agricultural byproducts.
Pellet stoves are great for the environment and your wallet in many ways. A few include:

• Biomass fuels are constantly replenished and reforested and absorb nearly as much carbon growing as they give off when burned. The result is a virtually invisible carbon footprint.
If you’re not familiar with pellet products, here’s what you need to know: What’s a Pellet Stove? Pellet stoves burn uniform cylinders of composite biomass fuel to create a steady, warming fire. Pellets are loaded into the stove hopper and automatically fed into the stove burn pot.
• Each installation of a pellet or wood appliance in a single-family home in a cool climate can displace between four and seven tons of carbon emissions annually, estimates the Alliance for Green Heat -- about three times the impact of buying a hybrid car, for roughly half the cost.
How They Help
sions, according to the Pellet Fuels Institute.
• Pellet stoves cost 64 percent less to operate than heating your home with oil, 47 percent less than propane and 54 percent less than electrical heat. For those thinking longterm, this represents a two to five year payback. What to Know
Pellet stoves are available both as a freestanding appliance or an insert in an existing fireplace, making most homes a candidate for this supplemental heating source. New models are environmentally responsible and also easily fit into busy lifestyles. The Harman Absolute43 features an intuitive Easy Touch Control that tells you when to add fuel, perform maintenance, and much more, making heating with pellets easier than ever. Go Shopping This Small Business Saturday
For many holiday shoppers, Black Friday marks the official kickoff to the gift-buying season. But the following day, November 28, is Small Business Saturday, and can be a more satisfying way to shop for gifts for loved ones. At a time of year where big box retailers offer deep discounts, this annual opportunity to show local businesses your support is also a great way to score unique items while benefitting the local economy. Here are some retail trends and other things to consider as you shop at your favorite small businesses. The Local Economy
By supporting small businesses, you are supporting local job creation. In fact, small firms accounted for over three-fifths of the new jobs created between 1993 and mid-2013, according to government statistics. With the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and American Express reporting that $14.3 billion was spent with independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday in 2014, spending your holiday shopping budget locally strengthens Main Street and can help your community’s economy thrive.
New Technologies A common stereotype of mom and pop stores are that they are antiquated and overpriced, but many small businesses are adopting new technologies to streamline their operations; which can be an important consideration for shoppers in a hurry or on a budget. For example, new Android based point of sale terminals, such as the ergonomically designed V-R7000 and V-R7100 from Casio have widescreen LCD touch panels, and an intuitive, high-resolution interface for faster sales and fewer transac-
tional snafus. For instance, these terminals come equipped with a battery to protect memory data in the event of a power failure, and offer efficient store operations by eliminating common hardware problems experienced with PC based hardware. Such information terminals are helping to transform retail management by offering small businesses a chance to better compete against their big box counterparts. Exclusive Items Make a splash with one-of-a-kind
and unforgettable gifts this season. From the gift shop with handmade crafts made by neighborhood artisans to the bookshop selling the works of local authors, shopping at small businesses means encountering items on sale that you won’t find elsewhere. If you are shopping for someone who seemingly has everything, going local can help you get inspired. Consider doing your holiday shopping a bit differently this year, by making a point of supporting small, local businesses on Small Business Saturday and beyond. (StatePoint)

Tips To Organize Your Home Office
Whether you work full-time from home, or you simply have a space dedicated to paying bills and keeping your life in order, a home office should inspire productivity and happiness. After all, you’ll do your best work if you actually want to spend time in your workspace. Here, four business bloggers share their tips for home office success.

Invest a Few Dollars “The easiest way to start feeling more like a professional and less like an imposter is to invest in your home office,” says Cassie Boorn, guest blogger for Handmade Success, and the woman behind Maker Mentors, a free community designed to help creative entrepreneurs build business. “But there’s no need to spend thousands of dollars to create a great workspace. It can be as simple as a quick trip to Staples and done with a budget as
‘business’ is from the perspective of a hustling freelancer. I was working a lot but there was no method to the madness. I had no structure,” says Vicky Ayala, brand strategist. She recommends creating a workspace both at home and on-the-go that complements what you want your business to be, paying attention to details. In her case, she equipped herself with supplies that fit the way she works -- a binding machine for customer handouts, a tablet and a briefcase that
converts into a backpack. “Sometimes it’s the small things that help remind us of the bigger picture.” Keep Goals in Focus “Have your plan in plain sight for constant review and reminders. Without it, it’s too easy to fall back into old routines and unproductive habits,” says Lisa Jacobs, a marketing consultant to small businesses and the blogger behind Marketing Creativity. Jacobs sets and tracks goals religiously by keeping a wall planner mounted in her home office. She used the copy and print services at Staples to bring her own planner calendar design into reality. The Brass Tacks “One thing that I have learned about myself over the years is that I perform at my best when I have an environment free of clutter. That
means no extra stuff on my desk, on my walls or in my office,” says Andreea Ayers, the entrepreneur behind Launch Grow Joy, a business that helps entrepreneurs elevate sales. To beat the clutter, Ayers advises sticking to your essentials and thinking about multipurpose equipment that saves space. Her short list includes a stackable desk tray to sort and contain files, and a laser printer/scanner/copier that can do it all. For ideas for making your home office more productive, and for time and money-saving business tips, visit www.Staples.com and follow the #MakeMoreHappen hashtag on social media. If you are creating a home workspace for the first time or revamping your current office, you can craft your own success by focusing on the details. (StatePoint)

4 Common Diabetes Myths Debunked
Knowing the facts about Type 2 diabetes is important for everyone, as living a healthy lifestyle can play a key role in helping to prevent and control the disease.

sugar substitutes as sweeteners, consuming excessive calories from other foods can still contribute to developing Type 2 diabetes.
In honor of American Diabetes Month this November, the Certified Diabetes Educators at Nutrisystem are debunking some common myths.
Carbohydrates are an acceptable and necessary part of a healthy meal plan. However, pay attention to portion.
Myth: I’m a healthy weight -- I can’t get diabetes.
Optimal carb counts vary, but the American Diabetes Association recommends starting with 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, and tweaking depending on your body’s response.
Truth: Although there is a clear connection between being overweight or obese and developing Type 2 diabetes, genetics and other lifestyle factors like diet can play a role as well. By maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious, balanced diet and engaging in healthy habits like regular exercise, you can decrease your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Ranbir Kapoor was talking to the press at the success party of Tamasha, when someone asked him if it’s true that Katrina addresses his father as Papa. The actor dismissed it completely. He said, “No, it’s not true. She doesn’t call him papa. She calls him Rishiji.” And with that one sentenced, he silenced everyone who were almost hearing the faint wedding bells of this Kapoor lad. But then Ranbir, how does it matter. As long as Katrina respects him as her beau’s father, it’s enough. After all, what’s in a name!

What To Know About Tuberculosis Testing For Your Children Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious, highly contagious disease that kills about 1.5 million people each year worldwide and has become the world’s leading infectious disease killer, according to a new report from the World Health Organization.
test, which is the most commonly used test to aid in the diagnosis of
the infection. The TB skin test requires an injection of antigens to
see how the patient’s body reacts, multiple doctors’ visits and can
result in false positives, especially in those who have been vaccinated for TB in the past. Luckily another option for the detection of TB infection -- a TB Blood Test -- is now being offered and represents a major scientific advance over its predecessor, giving greater accuracy and a more dependable result.
TB usually begins as a latent infection, which can be silent for weeks, months or years before developing into an active contagious disease characterized by chronic cough, fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats and coughing up blood.
Reliable results from the TB Blood Test can be obtained within 24 hours and provided by telephone, offering the convenience of a single visit, and confidence in an objective, laboratory-based result. More information can be found at www.TheTBBloodTest.com.
With this in mind, regular testing for the early stage of TB infection is important, especially in children whose immune systems are not fully developed and thereby have a higher risk of it progressing into an active and possibly deadly disease.
As a parent or caretaker, your children and loved ones come first, and when it comes to their health, you don’t want any surprises. Talk to your doctor about better testing methods for TB infection that offer greater reliability and convenience. (StatePoint)
However, “inaccurate,” “timeconsuming” and “outdated” are the three terms most often used to describe the 110-year-old TB skin
Teaching Kids To Trust Their Own Instincts
During the course of their day, kids hear the word “No” all the time. And while some of those “Nos” are a necessary part of keeping kids safe, the overall message can be one that stifles courage, creativity and trust in one’s own instincts -- effects that can last well into adulthood.

There are many ways that parents, teachers and caretakers can help kids overcome fears and achieve their dreams, while making good decisions on their own.

• Don’t ignore your instincts: “I knew I shouldn’t have done that,” you hear those words of regret all the time. From peer pressure to second guesses, there are many things that prevent people from acting on their instincts. Talk to your children about listening to that inner voice. Sometimes, that moment when someone makes the decision to listen to it, is the moment his or her courage and confidence has a chance to blossom.
And sometimes the world of children’s books can be the best place to help deliver the message. “Everyone, young and old, is blessed with unopened gifts, and of the most important is one’s instincts” says Christopher Conroy author of the new young adult novel “Anzard,” which explores this theme.

• Listen and engage: Many households and classrooms still operate on the antiquated “children should be seen, not heard,” basis. But this can be a destructive men-
tality. While children have a lot to learn, they also have a lot of wisdom to impart. If their thoughts are invalidated consistently, they will learn not to recognize the value of their own minds. Listen when children speak. • Offer encouragement: “Encouragement and praise to a child are like sunshine and water to a flower,” says Conroy. “It’s amazing what can grow out of that cultivation.” If your children show an interest in art, music, science or any other topic, foster that curiosity. Applaud their efforts. Acknowledge their growth. More information about “Anzard,” which has been lauded by critics for its writing and reader-friendliness, can be found at www.anzard. com. 10-Year-Old Ishita Katyal, India’s Youngest Representative At Tedx Ishita Katyal, a 10-year-old resident of Pune, has become the youngest Indian to speak at the TED Youth Conference in New York. As reported by The Indian Express, Ishita who studies in 5th standard at the Vibgyor High School in Balewadi, delivered a 4-minute speech on ‘What do you want to be now’, a topic that raised important points regarding how children too can make a difference, irrespective of their age. Ishita had first attended a TEDx Pune event back in 2013, and she never looked back. She went on to clear two Skype interviews with Global Volunteers at TEDx and became their youngest youth organizer in the AsiaPacific region. Ishita successfully organised a TEDx at her school and soon the opportunity to speak at the TED Youth Conference in New York came her way. There was no thinking twice about it, and her speech was highly appreciated by the audience. “She is very clear about what she wants. She didn’t hesitate for even a second. The whole trip was sponsored by TEDx. At the main event, when she stood on the stage to speak, I felt nervous because she was the youngest and had to speak without holding any paper in her hand. But she spoke well,” said Ishita’s mother, Nancy Katyal to The Indian Express. “When I finished my speech, I was relieved because it was exactly how I imagined it to be. It was midnight in India, but my friends and relatives called me after the talk to convey their best wishes.” Ishita is passionate about “working with community children to empower them for a better tomorrow” by helping them develop life-coaching skills.
