INDIAN MOVIES IN 2015
R.M. VIJAYAKAR MUMBAI — We now try and see which films actually made money or lost it. The business of a film is probably the most discussed subject in Hindi cinema nowadays, even going beyond the classic layman’s past favorite gossip fodder about who’s seeing or sleeping with whom! Thanks to the aggressive media and carefully cultivated lobbies, there is little congruency on this aspect. There is too much information available easily, as quotes or on the internet, and most of it is factually off-track, deliberately or through ignorance. But in this age of corporations largely taking up major films, the picture is literally different by the film. This year we had Eros distributing “Bajirao Mastani” worldwide and making a profit already, Rajshri Productions and Fox Star
Studios handling Indian and overseas distribution respectively and making a packet on “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo,” and Red Chillies Entertainment selling “Dilwale” to different producers and making a thick profit even as many Indian distributors have lost small to big money with the overseas market performing far better, as has happened with so many Shah Rukh Khan movies right from “Kal Ho Naa Ho” (2003). The hugest hit was obviously “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” which has crossed Rs. 320 crore in India and Rs. 626 crore globally. The second biggest was “Bahubali - The Beginning,” which cost Rs. 165 crore to the distributor but made about Rs. 600 crore globally (in all languages, from which Hindi accounted for Rs. 120 crore). In terms of traditional revenue deals,
it means that the distributor has made half of that — Rs. 300 crore, which means it has made Rs. 135 (300 minus 165) crore of pure profit from theatrical runs itself, with every other right (music, satellite, Home Video) being a bonus to the producer. The smaller films, of course, were a different kettle of fish. Whether distributed by corporate (who may have also produced them) or individual distributors, they made a decent to extraordinary profit. Heading the list was “Tanu Weds Manu Returns,” which at Rs. 152 crore, numerically made almost five times its cost of Rs. 31 crore in Indian cinemas alone. Like “Bajrangi…” and “Bahubali…” therefore, it was a clean hit. And “Prem Ratan….” and “Bajirao…” are likely to follow suit. Hits, therefore, are of various

kinds — the “clean hit” being the one in which everyone — producer, distributors and exhibitors (theater owner) all make definite profits. In the rest, the exhibitor (who is generally very safe, as he gets a fixed rental or a minimum guarantee in most cases) and producer make the profit, while the distributor(s) face(s) the loss. In today’s times when many corporate entities co-produce and distribute themselves (as with Eros), they first sell the satellite, Home Video and music rights and get a fix on what they must earn from theaters, which is usually easily managed. So if the film does not do well, they make a slim rather than a big profit. Losses are almost never there, unless the disaster is on a truly big scale like “Bombay Velvet,” where producers Phantom Films also had a contractual liability along with Fox Star (distributors and co-producers) in case of a flop. “Pyaar Ka PunchNama 2,” “Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon,” “Piku,” and “Hate Story 3” were also clean hits this year, as were “Badlapur,” “Ek Paheli-Leela” and “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” despite the latter’s limited release. “Manjhi - The Mountain Man” recovered its slim investment. The same was true of “Talvar,” “Jazbaa” and “Drishyam.” The disputed successes, or films where one perception (amount of money raked in) was plus and another (return of investment)
was suspect, were many, led by “Baby,”(Rs. 95.5 cr. in India), “Singh Is Bliing” (Rs. 90.25 cr.) and “Gabbar Is Back” (Rs. 86 cr.). But as a trade analyst pointed out, “Most Akshay Kumar films break even or make a small profit.” High costs, however, take a toll with those that do not, like Kumar’s fourth film, “Brothers.” Two more films did business of over Rs. 75 cr.— “Dil Dhadakne Do” and “Welcome Back,” but due to their high costs are considered losers. And “NH10” is touted to have recovered money from non-theatrical revenues. The clear-cut flops were led by “Bombay Velvet” (a mammoth disaster) and the other names were “Roy,” “Shamitabh,” “Hamari Adhuri Kahani,” “Hero,” “Mr. X,” “Tevar,” the inordinately expensive “Hawaizaada” considering its lack of face value, “Bangistan,” “Welcome to Karachi,” “Shaandaar,” “All Is Well,” “Katti Batti,” “Phantom” and “Tamasha.” (Courtesy - India-West)

Indie Meme brings meaningful cinema to Austin

Indie Meme, the brainchild of Alka Bhanot, brings meaningful South Asian cinema to Austin. A few years ago, Alka realized that big Bollywood films kept coming to Austin, but the meaningful cinema, which educates people along the way, remained absent.
was their biggest year with screenings from March through December. In summer, the movies included family movies with a lesson for children.
She and her partner, Tripti Bhatnagar, reached out to sponsors in the community to support their events.
‘Kaphal’, an award winning children’s film won the hearts of Austinites because it revolved around friendship between school going kids in the mountainous terrain of northern India.
Both UT and St. Edwards along with about twelve businesses came forward to support them.
She, in a short span of two and half years, developed a simple idea of bringing Indian quality cinema to Austin into Indie Meme, a prestigious non-profit film society with membership.
Alka has made a good plan for Indie Meme. The non-profit buys the rights of the movie they screen and reserve the film in their library.
Indie Meme promotes better understanding of society through cinema, ‘one film at a time’. Often the director is in attendance for Q/A. All their movies have subtitles and usually all discussions are in English.
Alka realized that very few people knew about it and saw the need to watch something more rewarding than what was usually available.

Zareen and Pervaiz Jameel of Lakeway, who reached out to their friends to make the evening a success, initiated the plan. The word spread that a ghazal evening with Habib Wali Mohammed’s songs would happen in Lakeway and the Pakistani and Indian community jumped in to have fun. That is the best part of the Austin community. They always join hands to make it a party and while there, help the people who initiate a plan to make it more fun and so relaxing.

Zareen and Pervaiz think they will again take the reins in to bring in an artist because they realized that so many of their friends got excited with them. People sang and clapped and closed their eyes as if to see themselves in their childhood dancing to Habib Wali Mohammed’s tunes.
Rizwan Wali Mohammed, the artist and son of the late legend, went back to California with praise for the Austin Community.
This December, Alka and her partner Tripti Bhatnagar in Dallas brought Walk the Walk, about the pride parade in India. The director Moses Tulasi answered questions from an audience of about fifty people from different members of the South Asian community. In 2016, Indie Meme plans to host its first film festival in spring. They plan to show about six films to their audience with separate prices for members and non-members.
Membership price ranges from $25 for individual member to $200 per year for a benefactor. On January 15 at 7 p.m., Indie Meme plans to show MOOR, the Oscar nomination from Pakistan in the foreign films category in the Southwest Theater on Lake Creek Parkway in Austin. Moor has been critically acclaimed for, ‘it’s fantastic visual landscape, setting, performances and music’. Jami, the director, is flying in for a brief discussion about Moor after the screening. Alka and Tripti are very excited to bring a Pakistani film for the first time. AADI (Austin Arts and Drama Initiative) is Indie Meme’s community partner in the screening. Tickets for Moor are available at: http://www.indiememe.com/upcoming-events.html
Make A Difference – Happy New Year By Vidya Kumar It seems like yesterday that we were wishing one another for New Year of 2015. Now 2015 is over and we are into 2016. I am sure that at the start of the every New Year we make resolutions and as per statistics over 50% of the time it is not adhered beyond six months. Yet it has almost become second nature for us to have New Year resolutions every year. So this year I am trying to have resolution - like not to expect anything. The first resolution would be not to expect that my family will help in keeping the house clean or organized. Imagine when there is no expectations then either I will do the work myself or let it remain undone until it gets done. So there goes my frustration with my husband about he not keeping the things in its place hence no arguments and life is so much peaceful. At the same time because the economy is still bearish – naturally no expectation regarding raise in the salary. So here I am – stepping into next year – with the resolution that there would be no increase in salary yet expenses are going to go up due to inflation however much the government denies and as am working in financial sector – the regulations are going to be more stringent with the result work will be assuredly more. Yet since there is no expectation I am going to be much happier just because I have a job to get up and go. So come the leap year – no more resolutions of losing weight, getting organized or eating healthy. Just resolve to have no expectation whatsoever and accept life as it comes on a day to day basis. Happy New Year.

Is Your Life In Balance? Healthy Habits To Try In 2016
Is your life in balance? The new year is a great time to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary. Here are some thoughtful habits to consider incorporating into your day in the coming year.
• Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal plan-
organizational needs.
Balanced Diet, Balanced Life
• Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your
• Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. You’ll be more likely to stick with the habit if you love the calendar you use, so consider something easy on the eyes, such as an AT-A-GLANCE fashion planner.
Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them. Write Everything Down

• Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. And spending time in the kitchen is also a stress reliever for some people. Make a fresh start -- the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to make positive changes to how you schedule and organize your time. (Coutesy: Statepoint)
How To Choose A Hospital For Procedures Or Surgeries Many patients become overwhelmed when they learn they need to have a procedure or surgery, and make quick decisions based on convenience. But before quickly settling for the nearest hospital, there are a few important things patients should consider. Read Reviews Before choosing a restaurant, you may read a few reviews. So why wouldn’t you do the same for something much more important than dinner? Spend some time researching the various hospitals on your list for their track records on safety, patient outcomes and patient experience. Find out more about the healthcare professionals that you will encounter. Not just the surgeon, but rather the entire team that will be caring for you while you are there. How long has your surgeon been in practice? What is his or her success rate? Several organizations, including independent non-profits list hospital rankings and ratings based on a number of factors, and are searchable by various disciplinary specialties.

Caring For Elderly Relatives: 10 Tips To Stick With Your New Making It Easier On Your Family Year’s Weight Loss Resolutions
It can be difficult for families when an elderly loved one starts to weaken physically and mentally. While nursing homes are an option, most are extremely expensive, and most seniors would prefer to remain in familiar surroundings. Fortunately, there are now more
Seniors need only press one button to talk to loved ones, notify them that help is needed, or to just say hello. Likewise, with one tap, users can instantly see, hear and talk back to parents through the high-quality HD video and two-way audio component. The camera can be controlled through the smartphone and directed to any location in the room, permitting a 270-degree view. It also includes night vision optics for clear viewing in dark rooms.
Millions of Americans will make the resolution this New Year to lose weight. But goal setting is the easy part. Staying on the weight loss track and maintaining that weight loss is where the challenges begin.
ing smaller, balanced meals throughout the day promotes greater weight loss and maintenance. Schedule meals every two to three hours, six times a day.
Here are 10 tips to help you stick with your weight loss resolution this New Year and beyond.
• Get moving: Exercise doesn’t have to be daunting! Get started with 10-minute sessions, three times a day. Movement sets your metabolism in motion so make sure it’s a consistent part of your weight loss efforts.
• Drink up: Hunger and thirst can often be confused, so stay hydrated. But remember, beverages are not a place to splurge on a ton of calories. Drink water. For a flavor boost, add fresh fruit slices or mint leaves.
• Eat out, right: Restaurant portions can be monstrous. Set aside half the meal and save it for later. Avoid key menu terms like “breaded,” “fried,” “crispy,” and “smothered.” At buffets, fill your first plate up entirely with greens before moving on to other options.
• Snack mindfully: It is all too easy to derail an otherwise flawless diet by binging at snack time. Be mindful of your snacks, and make sure they offer nutritional value and are designed to keep you satisfied until your next meal.
• Embrace setbacks: Sometimes diets get temporarily thrown off course by a missed workout or a second slice of birthday cake. Rather than throwing in the towel entirely, view the setback for what it really is, a temporary hiccup.
• Sleep: Studies show a link between sleep deprivation and excess pounds. While there are many theories as to why this is, at the very least, getting enough sleep will promote clear-headed, healthful choices throughout the day.
• Be accountable: Keep a food and exercise diary to reinforce good habits. Log food, drinks, activity, weight and more to stay accountable.
Beyond Monitoring choices available that can provide seniors the freedom to continue living safely in their own home. The average cost of an assisted living facility is $43,200 annually, and the cost of a nursing home with private room can cost over $90,000 a year, according to the 2015 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. Such a huge, ongoing expense can have an enormous impact on the average family, whether they have prepared financially or not. “Even for families where such costs are not prohibitive, parents are often reluctant to leave homes filled with years of memories, and be placed into an unfamiliar environment, living with strangers,” says health care systems expert Jack Zhang, President and CEO of the fast-growing health technology company, Vitall Inc. Caring for older parents and relatives doesn’t necessarily need to involve relocation or spending tens of thousands of dollars annually. Zhang says there are a few important things to consider. Communication Updates New technologies make looking after and staying connected to the seniors in your life easier and more affordable. For example, HeyMomDad, the world’s first two-way communication and wellness monitoring system, allows loved ones to see and hear in real-time that elderly relatives are safe -- simply by opening an app on their smartphones.
“Most seniors are reluctant to call 911 in an emergency because they’re embarrassed or don’t want to cause a fuss or incur an expense -- which can be as high as $1,200, even for false alarms where paramedics were dispatched,” says Zhang. HeyMomDad gives seniors two different alert options. They can choose to alert only family and friends, or alert family, friends and 911. In addition, the HeyMomDad Bed Monitor tracks heart rate, breathing rate and movement at night. Maintaining Independence For many seniors, one of the most difficult parts of aging is the loss of independence. When possible, families should consider making homes senior friendly, adding safety bars in the shower and bath, eliminating tripping hazards, improving lighting in hallways and outdoor walkways, and making kitchens more accessible with countertops and cabinets that can rise or lower with the push of a button. And new two-way communication and monitoring systems can add further peace of mind. More information can be found at www.HeyMomDad.com or 1-800-352-0887.
These alternatives can save your family thousands of dollars, give you peace of mind and improve your family’s quality of life.
• Jumpstart your weight loss: Studies show that early weight loss is a predictor of long-term success. Look for programs that keep you motivated, like Nutrisystem Turbo10, which delivers up to a 10-pound weight loss and up to five inches lost overall in the first month of dieting.

The Changing Retirement Landscape: What To Know Now
Previous generations of Americans were able to retire with confidence, knowing that they could count on a steady stream of income from what is often referred to as the “three-legged stool” of company pensions, social security and personal savings.
“For millions of Americans with moderate incomes, such guarantees are increasingly necessary to help them prepare for a financially stable retirement that could span several decades,” says Helene Rayder, Vice President at Lincoln Financial Group.
potentially eliminating middle class savers from choosing commission-based accounts.
Today, for most workers, the retirement landscape is different: the availability of traditional pensions has plummeted, wage stagnation has dampened how much middleincome savers can set aside, and the level at which Social Security can play a substantial source of future retirement income is in flux.
However, some retirement insurance experts are concerned that new regulations proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) intended to improve customer value by eliminating conflicts of interest between advisors and their clients, could hurt consumers instead. Rayder says the rules could potentially:
• Could cost families billions more instead of helping them save. A recent report published by Economists Incorporated says the cost could be as much as $80 billion nationwide.
And now experts are warning that many insurance products that replicate the “paycheck for life” provided by traditional pensions are becoming at risk in this new world. Especially threatened, say retirement specialists, are annuities, which have traditionally offered guaranteed lifetime income no matter what happens in the markets.
• Make it economically unviable for commission-based financial advisors to serve average consumers, forcing individuals to work with more costly pay-based advisors. This will limit the financial advice many middle class savers rely on today. • Reduce the choice of retirement products savers have in planning,
• Deter financial planners from offering annuities, and as a result savers will pay more and get less over the long term.
ers,” says Rayder. “Americans can get involved by encouraging the DOL to change its rule, and ask their congressional representatives
to make the same request of the Administration.” (Courtesy: Statepoint)

two top priorities so you can fully devote yourself to those goals. • Make Measurable, Attainable Resolutions: Once you’ve set your money-saving goals, determine how you’ll measure success. For example, if you are saving for your dream vacation, determine how much to set aside for the trip and how much to save each month to reach that goal. Then, set shortand long-term milestones to help you stay motivated. • Save for a rainy day: Putting away a small amount every week for emergencies can add up to big savings in the long run.

• Replace household items: Even though your refrigerator or fixtures may be working fine, they may be using more energy or water than they should. To save on water bills choose a quality faucet with a lower flow rate. For example, the new Kaden high-arc pulldown kitchen
faucet from Moen offers a low flow rate with a sleek design that’s easy on the wallet. It’s long-lasting, too, which also saves money in the long run, as it’s offered in Moen’s exclusive Spot Resist Stainless finish, which helps resist fingerprints and water spots to maintain the brilliance of the fixture. • Repurpose your stuff: One way to save is by repurposing what you already own. Use the New Year as a time to clean out closets, empty storage units and breathe new life into items by refinishing furniture or updating existing pieces of clothing. You can even sell clothes
you don’t wear as often through your own shop on websites like eBay or Poshmark. • Heat up your savings: If you rely on oil to heat your home, contact your energy provider to determine whether you can pre-pay to lock into lower rates. Here are six home décor trends Nayak predicts will be filling your Pinterest feed in 2016.

Nature’s Patterns For clean interior spaces with lots of detail, try simple designs inspired by nature, such as honeycombs, florals and leaves. “Pair these with neutral colors for a soothing atmosphere, or blow them up and paint them in a bright color for a bold statement,” says Nayak. You can also integrate natural patterns through accent pieces, such as light fixtures that have reflective metals to mimic sparkling water, or

ate different moods,” says Nayak. “Letters can be sharp and defined to create a contemporary and stylish aesthetic, or soft and casual for an elegant and timeless feel.” Digitally Defined “Geometric shapes and angles have become associated with technology; evoking creativity and innovative design,” says Nayak. Incorporate this trend with geometric floor tiles in different colors. Or use pixilation for a modern, clean look. Pixelated artwork made up of monochromatic cubes can be simplistic and versatile. Fresh and Fab Multiple bright colors mixed together elevate the mood in any space. Paint a bold accent wall for an eye-catching statement. Or brightly paint a piece of antique furniture for an unexpected com-
bination of modern and traditional. “When it comes to painting an accent wall or furniture, one of the most important tools you need is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape,” advises Nayak. Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape brand Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface tapes can be used on a variety of surfaces and help deliver sharp lines, so your handiwork looks professional. Textured Terrain From transformed wood pallets to worn leather or tin ceilings, aged raw materials offer texture and help give a space dimension. “Incorporate it into an application where you wouldn’t typically think to use the material,” suggests Nayak. “For example, use concrete on a wall instead of the floor.” Home décor items can easily be
made to look aged by adding paint and other finishes for a distressed look. Global Style Create a warm, friendly space with a parade of patterns from different cultures. “Don’t be afraid to mix multiple prints within a space,” says Nayak. “Tie these patterns together by carrying a similar color throughout each element in the room.” “When trying a new trend, make sure it accurately represents your style -- and remember you don’t have to go all out,” adds Nayak. “Any concept can be incorporated as little or as much as you’d like.” This New Year, update your home and accomplish your resolution in style. 3 Tips To Get The Most Of Workplace Benefits During Open Enrollment Season
For most Americans, the end of the year marks benefit open enrollment season.

While this could be viewed as an important chance to thoughtfully review coverage, it’s often a time that many employees dread, and in turn, end up avoiding.
Open enrollment is the time to assess your biggest concerns and discover how insurance options can help you secure your financial future and alleviate some of these fears. It doesn’t have to be difficult – here are three quick tips to consider:
More than 170 million Americans receive coverage through the workplace, according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “Today, these employees face complicated decisions and have more choices than ever before,” says Audrey Im, assistant vice president, Health & Welfare at Lincoln Financial Group. “It goes beyond health insurance, and we find there are many benefits employees aren’t even aware they have available.” Employees, especially those of the

“Longer-term concerns associated with some non-medical insurance offerings can be uncertain and less tangible, and therefore garner less attention. For example, less than a fourth of Millennials and Gen-Xers have
• Don’t overlook important nonmedical benefits such as dental care, vision coverage, disability insurance, life insurance, accident and critical illness insurance. Health insurance is crucial, but these can also play a big role in protecting your income and wealth in times of need. Even if your employer doesn’t contribute toward the premium cost, you may be able to conveniently pay premiums via
pre-tax payroll deduction. • Think about your biggest risks today and make protecting them a priority. Every year you should consider your life changes and re-evaluate your needs. Whether you’re about to walk down the aisle, expand your family, or buy a home, protecting your assets with the right insurance coverage is key. • Educate yourself. Many employers and benefit providers offer web tools to help you better understand benefits. For example, LFG.com features a wide array of tools and resources to help you make smarter decisions about protecting your future, based on your lifestyle. It’s the important things in life that are worth protecting. Insurance benefits offered through your workplace play a role in planning for that protection. Be sure to make informed choices this open enrollment season.(Courtesy: Statepoint)
Austin Indian Community (Continued From Page 01) Austin-Round Rock is the 35th largest metropolitan area in the United States, with a population over 2 million people as of the 2014 U.S. census estimate. According to David Guenthner, Senior Director for Public Affairs, Texas Public Policy Foundation, Austin’s total Asian population is a little more than 6%. Indians are the largest sub-category at 1.9%. That puts the Indian population around 38,000 in Austin-Round Rock Area and with software companies from all over US moving their development centers to Austin the community growth is on the raise. 25 years back there were very few Indian community organizations. Today we have 70 plus non-profit organizations in Austin associated with cultural, social and religious activities of Indian community. This diversity and leadership is great because each community related non-profits organize events
and cultural activities that are akin to their practices, which helps their members to stay in touch with their respective social and cultural fabric of their ethnicity.
and processes.
This also exposes children to their roots and helps in preserving and continuity of their culture.
In simple words it is also called ‘talking to each other’. For example, your laptop, whichever brand, can print to any printer wirelessly and similarly your printer can scan a document and send it to your laptop.
We also have other cultural and social organizations which function on their own agenda serving the niche requirements and supporting the community.
This communication process both ways between two equipments enables effective delivery, adding value. The key word is communication.
It is a great scenario for any community. But are we missing anything in this picture? If we are missing what are we missing?
The point I am driving here is we as community are not effectively communicating to each other. We are working in our own silo’s making less active effort to interface and integrate. We could do much better.
There are two great terminologies in software – Interface and Integrate. When a software product is built, one of the main focus of the developers is how best can this be interfaced and integrated with, not only their own other products but also with third party software, products
ment with India Independence day celebration in Austin. Probably I am telling this story for atleast last five years. We are around 38,000 Indians in the city and I have never seen any Independence day event attended by more than 1000 people. Somehow this math does not add up. For example, in Boston, which surely has bigger Indian community, gets an attendance of 15-20,000 for India independence day event, and it is highly participated event for any ethnic community in Boston. I am sure they feel proud. This does not just signify the quantity of participants, but the process of coming together once a year as community, that makes the difference.
With my experience and observing Indian communities elsewhere I feel we can do much better job of ‘coming together as Indian community’.
This is a show of strength and that is good for the image of the community and also for our children to experience the look and feel of their total community.
Let me support the above argu-
Indian community in Austin, as
someone mentioned in one of the meetings, need a ‘FACE’. The main objective of this ‘FACE’ will be to work and co-ordinate with all Indian non-profits in Greater Austin – interface and integrate and enable an environment of ‘talking to each other’, plus address common issues and concerns the community faces as a whole. In my opinion this ‘FACE’ should have representation from each of the Indian non-profits to enable the communication channel between and amongst the community members. This organization can make a huge difference in integrating the community. This is what I think community needs today. But there is always other side to every logic and I welcome it. I am willing to work with any one or any group to share this vision or any vision which will work towards the above objective. I can be reached at info@austinsouthasian. com

5 Reasons To Filter Your Drinking Water For years, bottled water has been a go-to for clean drinking. Many believe it tastes better than tap water and assume it’s safer to drink. But at-home filtered water is another alternative, and while it gets less attention, there are many reasons why it could be the best option available. 1. You’ll Drink More Water: If you’ve ever filled a glass with tap water, you’re well aware of the strange taste and even smell that unfiltered water can have. When filtered to remove contaminants like chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, iron and more, the result is better tasting and more healthful water, encouraging you to drink more of it. 2. It’s Easy to Filter at Home: Filtering water at home is easy thanks to a variety of filtration options available. Look for products like the Pfister Clarify Filter Faucet, a water filtration system integrated directly into your kitchen sink that filters one gallon of water per minute, meaning it’s two times faster than most conventional drinking water systems. With its Xtract Filter Mode, you’re able to select between tap and filtered water by simply pushing the handle back,
allowing you to get great tasting water from the tap with little effort.
3. Filtered Water is Cleaner and Safer: While tap water may appear clean and safe, it can actually be dirtier than it looks. Tap water travels through pipelines and may pick up contaminants along the way. Although it’s disinfected and fortified before getting to you, you still can’t be guaranteed that it’s 100 percent safe. Filtration can remove chlorine, chlorine byproducts and dangerous volatile organic compounds while preserving healthy minerals. Additionally, bottled water may absorb chemicals from the bottle into the water, ending up in your body when you drink it.
4. You’ll Save Money: When compared to the cost of bottled water, filtration products like Pfister’s Clarify Filter Faucet can save an average family of four up to $460 in the first year. That means that in as little as three months, the filtration product will pay for itself. 5. You’ll Reduce Your Carbon Footprint. Seventeen million barrels of oil annually are required to produce bottles for water for U.S. demands alone, according to The Pacific Institute estimates, and experts stress that it takes a fleet of 40,000 18-wheelers to deliver that bottled water weekly. In the end, less than 40 percent of plastic water bottles are recycled, according to the National Association for PET Container Recycling. Filtering your drinking water can have a significant impact extending beyond your family’s health. By ditching plastic water bottles, you can help create a more sustainable environment, while enjoying fresher, cleaner-tasting water.

son an active one for the Pakistani Community. While a number of families have gone out of town on vacation, some out of the country too, many have stayed in Austin to enjoy moderate temperatures of a so far mild winter. The biggest and most loved activity in the community is to host each other for meals. Often the guest lists have been so large that families have hosted dinners in restaurants. The choices of restaurants have increased, as Halal options are now available in a variety of places. Omer and Kirin Dossani hosted thirty-three families in Silver Café on Parmer Lane. It was their son’s sixteenth birthday and they wanted to celebrate it in a big way with friends who have been around from the beginning of their life in Austin. Salomi and Zahid Pasha hosted an equally huge lunch in Saffron Indian Fusion on Farwest Boulevard. It was their grand daughter’s first birthday.
Two couples, Dr. Junaid and Yasmeen Siddiqui and Adnan and Hawama Sattar continued to be invited for meals at their friends’ homes as they have recently returned from Hajj, a farz on Muslims who can afford it once in their lifetime. It is a tradition in the Pakistani community to host the ‘Hajis’ and celebrate with them. While all the dinners were going on, funds drive for the Syrian Refugees was inititated by Dr. Zarmeena Vendal to help Muslim Community Support Services meet their monthly expenses for the increasing number of refugee families dependant on them. On the movie scene, Star Wars was a big taker in the Pakistani kids. Many kids went to see the movie and agreed that it was totally worth it. Some girls dressed up as Princess Leia when they went to watch the movie. Sabiha and Akif Sultan have regularly hosted Antakshri at their home and will do so again on January 1st to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Every family tries its best to be all-inclusive and so generates good will from all. The Austin South Asian is honored to be a part of the lives of such generous people.

How To Make A New Year’s Resolution And Actually Keep It (Continued From Page 01) New Year’s resolutions. They tell me, this is the year I will learn French! Learn Spanish! Learn Chinese! To all you resolved language learners out there, hoping to make 2015 the year you finally reach your languagelearning goals, I’d like to offer a bit of guidance in making your New Year’s resolutions and actually keeping them. To do this, I’ll share my own goals for 2015 with you – both those I have for my languages, but also my other goals as well – and I’ll tell you exactly how I plan to achieve them. The strategy is the same for both. “BAD” NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO AVOID Generally, most people’s New Year’s resolutions tend to revolve around the same themes. Here are some examples, that are all technically things that I want to do in 2015: - Read more. - Exercise more. - Eat healthier. - Learn to swing dance. - Perfect my French. - Speak Chinese better. These are all bad goals to have, mainly because each one lacks specificity. (Continued On Page 13)

The passion for the struggle, the reactions of parents, family members and other community members, the link with the broader battle for human and political rights are all woven into the theme of freedom to be who we are or want to be. Ultimately, a fundamental freedom is the freedom of self-definition. From the perspective of an expatriate population, Walking the Walk helps break the mould of the stereotypes in our head. The vigor of the LGBT movement in India, the gradual acceptance and the broader emerging toler-

Earlier this month, Indie Meme had a showing of Walking the Walk with filmmaker Moses Tulasi in attendance. The film is a documentary based on Telangana’s First Queer Swabhimaana Walk that happened earlier this year in Hyderabad. My New Year’s Goals
This is a general theme with New Year’s Resolutions, and it’s why I don’t even use the term myself, and always prefer to model my life improvements around goals.
To show you what I mean, here are several of my own genuine goals, all of which are much more specific versions of the vague “resolutions” above:
Additionally, some calls placed to rural areas may connect but have “poor call quality” issues like echoes, transmission delays and choppy sound. If you experience these issues, there now are ways to report them with your phone company as well as with government agencies.
I’ve talked about this before, but it bears repeating: To reach your goals, you have to actually have a goal.
These lost calls are often the byproduct of how long-distance phone carriers choose to route calls. Unfortunately, calls following the least-costly route can often fall into a loop of routers.
If your goal is to improve your French, how will you know when you’re done? If you want to read more, how will you know if you’re on track? Have you reached your goal if you read for 1 day? For 30 days? How can you gauge your progress?
- Read 60 books by November. - Run a half marathon by March. - Run a full marathon by Novem ber. - Restrict pasta, chocolate and so das to 1 day per week (Saturday only) - Be ready to swing dance confi dently as a very solid beginner by November. - Take a mock C2 (mastery level) exam in French by July. - Reach B2 (fluency) in Mandarin by November.
If you live in a rural area, you may have had long-distance or wireless callers tell you they had trouble reaching you.

and small-town America. “With personal calls, it’s frustrating. With businesses, hospitals and first responders, call connection becomes a public safety and viability issue.”
Likewise, if you have ever tried to place a long-distance or wireless call to a rural area, you may have experienced “failure to complete” problems, such as dead air, prolonged ringing or a recording such as, “this call cannot be completed as dialed.”
“Throughout rural America, calls are simply failing to connect,” says Shirley Bloomfield, chief executive officer of NTCA– The Rural Broadband Association, which represents nearly 900 independent, community-based telecommunications companies in rural
How To Make A New Year’s Resolution And Actually Keep It
You need an end-point that you can visualize and know for sure whether or not you’re on track, and when you’ve achieved it.
The trick to making a New Year’s resolution that actually sticks to is to visualize your resolutions in concrete terms. Here are some examples.
Tip 1: Create goals that are specific and measurable Tip 2: Allow yourself to feel a sense of accomplishment and progress Tip 3: Know your limitations and don’t let setbacks derail your momentum

5 Things To Put On Your Year-End Financial Checklist
The end of the year is a good time to wrap up financial loose ends and set priorities for the year ahead.
For 59 percent of Americans, saving for retirement is a financial priority, according to the same Lincoln
Here’s a checklist of timely financial to-dos. Get Budget Savvy Over three-fifths of Americans identify staying within budget as a “take charge priority” in a recent Lincoln Financial Group Measuring Optimism, Outlook and Direction (M.O.O.D.) of America study. (Lincoln Financial Group is the marketing name for Lincoln National Corporation and its affiliates, which are separately responsible for their own contractual obligations.)An online tracking tool tied to your bank account is an easy way to monitor spending habits and identify where to make necessary tweaks to redirect money toward important financial goals. study. Take their cue. You can lower your tax burden by increasing your retirement plan contribution, since deposits are made pre-tax.Unfor-
tunately, you can’t just write a check to your 401(k) if you want to contribute more. The money must c o m e out of y o u r p a y check, and you must ask your human resources department at work to increase y o u r withholding. S o m e c o m panies even allow you to allocate a portion of your year-end bonus to your 401(k) pre-tax. Empty Flexible Spending
A flexible spending account (FSA) is a great tool for saving on healthcare. You decide during open enrollment how much you’d like to have taken out for healthcare-related expenses throughout the year, and the money is deposited in the account pre-tax.But there’s a catch: You must spend it all before yearend or lose it, although some companies allow you to carry over up to $500 into the next year. If there’s still money in your FSA, push up scheduled healthcare purchases, like new eyeglasses or planned dental work, into the current year. Portfolio Rebalancing
Rebalancing is a necessary but often overlooked portfolio task. Financial advisors recommend reviewing your portfolio at least once annually to decide whether rebalancing is warranted, typically if your positions have strayed five to 10 percent from where you originally set them. For example, if you allocated 60 percent of your portfolio to stocks, but it has now moved to a 70 percent allocation
due to strong market performance, it might be time to rebalance. Rebalancing helps you restore your allocation back to your intended risk profile. Charitable Contributions The holidays are a good time to remember the causes you care about. In fact, you’ll be in good company, as December is the most popular month for charitable giving, with 18 percent of annual donations happening this month alone. If you itemize your deductions, you can take a deduction against donations to 501(c)(3) organizations. Your donations can take many forms: cash, appreciated stocks, or even the cost of ingredients for a big pot of chili for a homeless shelter. More financial tips can be found at www.lincolnfinancial.com/holidays. A little attention paid to year-end financial tasks can go a long way toward making 2016 -- and many years to come -- more financially secure. (Courtesy:StatePoint)
Most Americans Support Funding For Public Transit More than seven in 10 Americans support increased federal funding for the nation’s public transportation systems in communities of all sizes, according to a survey conducted by ORC International for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). This support is broad, according to the survey, spanning various age groups and political affiliations, with some of the highest numbers among Millennials ages 18 to 34 (77 percent) and individuals age 65 and older (76 percent). Owning or having access to a private vehicle does not diminish this support, with 71 percent of car owners reporting that they want to see more federal investment in public transportation in both large and small communities. In addition, over half of respondents said

As Congress finalizes work on the Surface Transportation Bill, some
experts are echoing the public sentiment. “No matter where you live and work and what age you are, public transit provides vital access to jobs and everything a community has to offer,” says APTA President and CEO Michael P. Climate Change And The City Of Austin
City of Austin Mayor Steve Adler, along with City Council member Leslie Pool traveled to Paris last
week to talk climate change, along with over 500 international city
leaders at the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, as part of the Compact of Mayors.
The main topic discussed at the conference was reducing the car-
bon footprint of cities. Mayor Adler met with other cities and mayors who pledged to make their respective communities more resilient to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and regularly report their progress publicly. To further this promise, City Manager Marc Ott has already directed all City employees to reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips dur-
ing peak times by 20 percent. This opportunity serves as one strategy in the City of Austin’s Traffic Congestion Action Plan to reduce congestion throughout the city. He encouraged other private and
public employers to follow the City’s lead to help lowering the demand during peak travel times. Visit www.compactofmayors.org to learn more about the Compact of Mayors.

• Get your financial house in order: Good credit is key to getting a mortgage at a reasonable interest rate. If it’s been more than a year, find out what your credit score is. You can improve your credit by paying your bills on time, working with a no-fees housing counselor, and beefing up your credit literacy. Free online resources can help, such as Freddie Mac’s CreditSmart online training. • Figure out how much you can afford. What do you earn? What do you spend? How much do you have in savings? Answering these questions will help you learn whether you are financially ready for home-

In fact, about 40 percent of today’s homebuyers are making down payments that are less than 10 percent and a recent study found that 87 percent of U.S. homes would qualify for down payment help. Find out if you’re eligible for any local or state down payment assistance programs. Remember, some options may be as low as three percent. But keep in mind that if you’re not putting at least 20 percent down, you’ll pay extra each month for mortgage insurance. Contact several mortgage lenders to shop around and get the best deal.

Here are a few quick tips to consider: • Contribute to a vacation savings account: Big travel purchases, like airfare and hotel accommodations, are hefty withdrawals if you don’t set aside money specifically for a vacation. Earmark a portion of each paycheck to send straight to a dedicated vacation savings account. Once it’s there, don’t touch it until it’s time to pay for your trip. • Create a budget: A budget is the only way to track your spending and ensure you have more com-

• Budget your time: Before making any travel plans, check your job’s vacation policy so you can budget your days off from work accordingly. If you don’t get paid time off from work, the pay cut is also an important item to consider in your financial budget.
• Temporarily skip extras: Which of your daily expenses are necessary and which are optional? Consider packing your lunch for a month or using the company coffeemaker instead of indulging in a daily latte at the café around the block. At the end of the month,
calculate the savings and “pay yourself” by directing this money to your vacation fund. • Consider coupons: Vacation packages found on daily deal sites can be just the ticket you need to get the vacation you want for less. Other travel sites often offer special rates if you bundle purchases. Investigate these options before resigning yourself to an expensive a la carte plan. • Be on time: A missed flight or train could cost you a pretty penny you did not account for when drawing up your vacation budget. Invest in a watch that will help you stay true to your itinerary, such as Casio’s line of EDIFICE timepieces. These watches automatically adjust to the time zone and come with daily alarm settings and countdown timer settings. You don’t need to defer your vacation again this year. There is some unorthodox remedy for all difficulty as Rahu will cast shadow on your Sun or Moon this year. Your plans will be above average and intelligent and within the parameters of rules and regulation but you may not find people to come on board with your ideas. Of course children will do exceptionally well and you will gain another member into the family. Progress will be slow but steady this year. Family Ideals Remain Consistent In Changing Times While the concept of family once had quite specific meaning, the face of families in the US today is more diverse and wide-ranging
the traditional, nuclear, one-momone-dad-with-kids family model is actually the minority now. However, families of all shapes and sizes share similar ethics and face related struggles, whether they are drawn together by biological ties or a deeply rooted friendship. Here, some heads of households share some insights into what defines a family and their concerns: You Define Your Family

Inexpensive Metal Grate Can Make Indian ‘Chulahs’ Safer
Created by an Indian American researcher, an inexpensive metal insert for primitive cooking stoves, or what are commonly called a “chulhas,” may decrease use of firewood and reduce smoke, thereby potentially saving the lives of thousands of women and children.
at the University of Iowa, spent several weeks earlier this year in Rajasthan investigating ways to reduce the amount of firewood used

holes punched in it. The device costs about $1. “It is a glorified grate, really. And so it is simple to make,” Udaykumar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, said. The insert separates the ash from the wood and allows air flow from under the burning wood, which increases its efficiency. Researchers found that using the metal insert reduced wood consumption by about 60 percent and anecdotally observed a significant
reduction in smoke, although no formal emissions measurements were taken in the homes. Further testing on soot emissions was later conducted in a national lab in India, and Udaykumar and his team found that the metal insert actually decreased emissions by 90 percent. About 2,000 of the inserts are in use at present, and additional research will take place in India this winter, Udaykumar said. The findings were reported in the journal Solutions.

Connect To Nature, No Matter Where You Live
In this age of smartphones and streaming video, it is easy to forget about the world beyond our little screens. And for the 80 percent of Americans living in urban areas, the natural world can seem even more remote. But experts say it’s important to find the time to disconnect, unplug, and appreciate what nature does for you. Surprisingly, you don’t have to travel outside your town to enjoy nature or benefit from it. “Your very own neighborhood is likely home to a wide variety of trees,” says Lisa Allen, Missouri State Forester and chair of the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) urban and community forestry committee. “From your backyard to the park, trees offer residents improved quality of life and a healthier local
environment.” But trees are at risk from a number of threats, such as invasive pests. So a healthy community forest doesn’t exist without proper planning, management and community investment. Fortunately for urban dwellers, thousands of communities nationwide understand the need for green infrastructure, and are actively working with their state forestry agency to manage these landscapes. Beyond enjoying
the trees around you, you can get involved by helping to raise awareness about the many benefits trees offer. Start a local eco-appreciation society, get involved in local street cleanups, or ask your children’s school to incorporate environmental education into the curriculum. Lastly, stay current on community forestry issues.

Peculiar Title For Mahesh, Book On Lata Mangeshkar To Include Murugadoss Movie 300 Of Her Handwritten Song Sheets
Superstar Mahesh Babu, who is on a vacation in an undisclosed foreign location for New Year cel-
ebrations, is going to resume the shooting of his upcoming movie Brahmotsavam in January first week. Soon after wrapping up this fam-
ily entertainer, Mahesh would be joining hands with director AR Murugadoss for a new movie. Touted to be the costliest film in Mahesh’s career, the film boasts of several international technicians and will be made in Telugu and Tamil languages. According to reports, the makers are contemplating Enemy as the film’s title. Not so long ago, speculations were doing rounds that the film is named after Chiranjeevi’s hit film Chattamtho Poratam, but that turned out to be a rumour. Set in the backdrop of Mumbai, the film deals with issues related to Indian judiciary system. Veteran cinematographer Santosh Sivan is going to crank the lens, while Hollywood actor Harrison Ford is being considered to play villain in this action-thriller.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray is now working on a book on Lata
she was in the habit of writing most of her songs on a sheet of paper after the lyricists gave the lyrics to her. Thackeray has decided to compile 300 of them into a book, where the Mangeshkar fan will get to see the songs in her own handwriting, complete with small notes. Mangeshkar has no formal education and yet her handwriting stands out for its neatness and clarity.
Mangeshkar’s song sheets. Thackeray was presented 4,000 sheets by Mangeshkar herself —
The book will be edited by journalist Ambarish Mishra. Mangeshkar’s niece Rachna Shah is helping Thackeray. Thanks to a corporate entity coming in, the huge launch will be attended by top film, political and
industrialist personalities in February 2016. And yes, each song will have the name of the lyricist, composer, film and its year of release.
