stitution” without fear or favour. NDA nominee Murmu crossed the 50 percent mark after the third round of counting to emerge victorious in the poll over her rival Sinha.
The NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu emerged victorious in the presidential election by bagging a total of 6,76,803 votes over her rival Yashwant Sinha who polled 3,80,177 votes.
In a statement, Sinha also expressed concern over the country’s situation, saying India has never seen “political corruption of such magnitude”, and this, coupled with the “poisonous politics of polarisation”, poses a grave danger to democracy and communal harmony.
Making an official announcement after the fourth round of counting, Returning Officer P C Mody declared Murmu as the winner with 64.03 percent votes. Sinha got 36 percent of the valid votes polled. Murmu bagged votes from a total of 2824 electors, including 540 MPs, while her rival Sinha got votes of 1,877 electors including 208 MPs in the election. There were a total of 4809 electors, including 776 MP with total vote value of 10,72,377, but votes of 53 electors including the maximum of 15 MPs were declared invalid in the election held on July 18. “In my capacity as Returning Of-
ficer, I declare Droupadi Murmu as President of India,” said Mody while declaring the final result of counting. A sizeable number of MLAs from across state assemblies crossvoted in support of President elect Draupadi Murmu, defying their parties’ stated support to Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, sources said
on Thursday. BJP sources said around 125 MLAs from different assemblies crossvoted in her support. Counting of votes also suggests that Murmu was the beneficiary of crossvoting from 17 MPs. Assam, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh assemblies witnessed a significant
number of Opposition MLAs voting for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s candidate. Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha on Thursday congratulated Draupadi Murmu on her win in the presidential poll and said he hopes that as the 15th president she functions as the “custodian of the Con-
Congratulating Murmu, he said, “I hope -- indeed, every Indian hopes -- that as the 15th President of India she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour. Six Earth-Friendly Tweaks You Can Make To Your Shopping Habits Did you know that there are many sustainable tweaks you can make to the way you shop? With major companies leading the charge, it’s easier than you might think. For example, Amazon co-founded and became the first signatory to The Climate Pledge
in 2019. Now, more than 300 companies have signed the Pledge and committed to reaching net-zero carbon by 2040, working together and taking bold steps to decarbonize their businesses and fight climate change. As part of the Pledge, Amazon is working to reduce carbon emissions across its own operations, from adding 100,000 electric delivery vehicles to its global delivery fleet and investing in renewable energy, to inventing machine learning algorithms to arrive at the best possible packaging choices for deliveries. Here are six tips to shop more sustainably for yourself: 1. Browse wisely: When browsing Amazon, you can now shop from a selection of more than 300,000 products from more than 20,000 fan-favorite brands such as Honest Company, Columbia and Burt’s Bees designated as “Climate Pledge Friendly.” This ensures these products have one or more of 39 certifications that help protect the natural world. A new private brand, Amazon Aware, now features thoughtfully-designed, affordable, everyday essentials across fashion, home and beauty made from materials such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and bio-based ingredients with certifications from the Climate Pledge Friendly program specific to product type.
2. Learn more about small brands: Brands, entrepreneurs and startups are overcoming the challenges associated with launching new products. Amazon Launchpad, which provides businesses with support, is sharing unique stories from brands with more sustainable products, including South Korean vegan skincare line, Melixir, as well as GOODSAM, SHANTI BAR, and White Leaf Provisions at Amazon. com/Launchpad. 3. Reuse: Discover and buy refurbished products that have been professionally inspected and tested to work and look like new. At Amazon Renewed, you can find great prices on preowned smartphones, laptops, tablets, desktops, and cameras, across top brands. Products are backed by a 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee. You can also look for items offered by Amazon Warehouse to find quality preowned, used, and open-box items, all of which have passed a 20-point quality inspection and are backed by a 30-day return policy. 4. Donate: Shop at smile.amazon.com and AmazonSmile will donate a portion of your eligible purchases to the charity of your choice at no extra cost to you. Participating organizations include a wide range of environmental charities. 5. Don’t trash it, trade it in: Did you know you can trade in certain devices, cell phones and video games for an Amazon gift card? Through Amazon’s Trade-In program, the devices are either restored and re-sold, or recycled, ensuring a more sustainable way to dispose of devices. 6. Recycle: Learn how to recycle packaging in your community by visiting the Amazon Second Chance page at amazon.com/amsc. Additionally, when your orders arrive, find details of how to recycle and dispose of packaging by clicking on the “Returns & Orders” section of your account. What To Know Before Switching Your Car Insurance Last year, the average new car price reached a record high largely due to a global automotive microchip shortage. Unfortunately, prices aren’t the only thing on the rise. Reckless driving has also skyrocketed, with more than 30,000 U.S. traffic fatalities in the first nine months of 2021.

companies, like Erie Insurance, offer these extra protections as part of their standard auto policy at no additional cost. Erie Insurance policies are offered for a full year term,
4. Save with a multi-policy discount. Did you know bundling your homeowners and auto policies with one company may save you money? Many insurance companies offer multi-policy discounts. Before you decide to look elsewhere -- check with your insurer to see if you can bundle and save.
These effects are likely to influence insurance companies’ auto policy premiums. Drivers concerned about rising costs might want to shop around for a new policy. Before making the switch, here are a few things to consider: 1. You can change providers at any time. If your insurance isn’t satisfying your needs, you’re free to switch carriers whenever you’d like. However, it’s important to keep in mind that some insurance companies charge a cancellation fee and require a formal cancellation letter with 30-days’ notice. Check your policy for these clauses before making a move. 2. Not all auto policies are created equal. Big
a home, you may qualify for a lower rate. Couples and homeowners typically pay less for car insurance, though it depends on your carrier. Be sure to indicate these changes when shopping around to guarantee the lowest price.
5. Keeping continuous coverage can help you get a lower rate. Not only does driving without auto insurance put you at risk of fines, tickets or even license suspensions, it can also cause your rates to increase. If you choose to change providers, align the timing so there are no gaps between policies.

What Consumers Need To Know About The Future of In-Person Banking
From digital payments to video banking, the way consumers conduct basic financial transactions has changed substantially throughout the past decade, and the CO-
VID-19 pandemic has only accelerated the trend toward digital banking. However, brick-and-mortar bank branches continue to play an essential role for many consumers when it comes to important financial conversations.
Industry experts say more changes are coming down the pike to meet consumers’ evolving needs and to provide the right mix of digital tools and experiences, with more personalized human interactions at brick-and-mortar bank locations.
Basic financial transactions will begin to be completed using automated or self-service solutions, such as ATMs and video banking, freeing bankers’ time to hold more in-depth conversations and truly engage with customers in offering financial advice, expertise, and solutions to help them meet their financial goals.
Leading the charge in implementing some of these changes is one of the largest diversified financial services institutions in the United States, PNC, which is embarking on a multi-year conversion of its retail branch network in response to feedback and insights gleaned from its customers.
“We remain committed to making a positive difference for our customers and communities, and to helping all move forward financially,” says Kevin McCann, retail growth and innovation executive for PNC.
Between May 2022 and the end of 2026, more than 60% of its 2,600 branches nationwide will convert to a new format.
“We believe the balance we will be striking between physical and digital banking will allow us to meet our customers where they are by providing that sweet spot of convenient
digital tools and meaningful side-by-side personal interactions.” Those who are less comfortable with the latest technologies and who may be feeling anxious about these changes can put their concerns aside, according to McCann, who notes that bankers also will be available to spend time helping customers understand the digital tools available to them, within and outside of the branch. To learn more about the evolution of branch banking, visit www.pnc.com. At a time when both physical facilities and digital tools are critical to banking customers, a new way forward is emerging. 4 Tips To Confidently Care For Gray Hair
Sponsored by L’Oreal Paris. The pandemic led many women to confidently embrace their silver hair, not only as a practical move, but as a stylish statement.
To make a silver statement, consider Colombini’s best kept secrets: Fight Frizz
tresses by using a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase at night and by getting sufficient hair-healthy nutrients in your diet, including biotin, zinc and vitamin E.
With elegant stars like Helen Mirren and Andie MacDowell proving that gray is glamorous, (and younger stars even dyeing their hair gray to get in on the trend) you may be feeling empowered to show off your naturally silver strands. Experts say that there are a few things to know that can help you make the transition gracefully.
Be sure to also drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated promotes circulation and oil production of the scalp for healthier looking hair.
“While I love this trend, it’s true that the grow-out process can get a little dicey and create challenges,” says Jonathan Colombini, celebrity hairstylist. “Like any other hair color, gray requires specific maintenance. It can be wiry, dull and brassy without intervention. But low-effort solutions can ensure you look great and help you confidently own that color.”

days, use a toning gloss to enhance your hair’s natural, gorgeous hue. While toning gloss is a service typically performed in a hair salon, you don’t need any special skills to achieve these results at home with Le Color Gloss by L’Oreal Paris. The line offers three shades of silver for all hair types and textures, helping you tone, color, boost shine and deeply condition, no matter what shade of gray you’re rocking. Whether you’re silver, silver white or silver opal, here’s how to use the product effectively: 1. Evenly distribute Le Color Gloss through clean, damp hair all the way through the ends (use a wide-tooth comb for thicker curly hair textures). 2. Leave it on for 5-15 minutes. (Review instructions for specific development time for your shade and desired result.) 3. Rinse your hair thoroughly with water. If you’re looking for even more color or want to build a deeper result, especially on non-colortreated hair, use again after seven days. “I like this option because it’s easy for anyone to use. It’s also infused with coconut oil, so not only will it not damage hair, but it’s also super conditioning,” says Colombini. “I recommend using it in the shower on your shampoo day.” Prime for Blow-Drying

Civilians Can Soon Fly To Space? ISRO Eyeing ‘Space Tourism’ With Gaganyaan Mission Just Like SpaceX
ISRO is currently working on several other missions as it looks to conduct its first human spaceflight launch with the Gaganyaan mission. Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was in the process of developing indigenous capabilities towards space tourism through the demonstration of human space flight capability to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (INSPACe) also sought to promote active participation of the private sector in carrying out end-to-end space activities, which also includes space tourism. To a question on space diplomacy, the minister said ISRO pursued
international cooperation and relations with 61 countries in varied domains of space activities. IN-SPACe is a single window
agency under the Department of Space to promote, handhold and authorize the activities of the private sector in the space domain.
The space tourism market has catapulted in the last couple of years with private aerospace companies dominating the field as government space agencies playing catch
up. Elon Musk founded SpaceX is leading the space tourism market with its Dragon spacecraft taking people on tourism flights in zero gravity. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos-led Blue Origin is another big player with its New Shepard spacecraft launching from West Texas with passengers in brief joyrides to space. The flights last nearly 10 minutes, giving the passengers a view of the Earth from outside it. ISRO is currently working on several other missions as it looks to conduct its first human spaceflight launch with the Gaganyaan mission, with an uncrewed launch delayed to next year. Study Shows Americans Aren’t Planning For Future Healthcare Needs

If you haven’t spent time considering what your healthcare needs will be in the years or even decades from now, you’re not alone. Recent research suggests that many aging Americans aren’t aware of the full range of options available to them. As we age, our healthcare needs intensify, and experts say that the U.S. healthcare system will need to embrace home healthcare options to meet the demand of an aging population. The new national survey, titled “Aging in Place: Assessing Senior’s Understanding of Home Healthcare Options,” conducted by Bredin on behalf of Cross Country Workforce Solutions Group, shows that while most people aged 50-79 years old would prefer at-home care as they age, 91% of respondents have not proactively researched the care they may need as they grow older. Further, 34% have not thought about their care needs, and awareness of existing managedat-home care programs was low among the survey respondents. “By living at home, seniors can maintain their independence and be close to their loved ones and community, and by and large, that is what they want to do. At-home care can both meet the needs of those requiring long-term care, while alleviating some of the mounting challenges faced by hospitals and healthcare systems,” says Pamela Jung, president of Cross Country Workforce Solutions Group, a division of Cross Country Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of in-home clinical and non-clinical care for aging seniors. After more than two years of pandemicrelated restrictions, Americans are ready to break free and travel again. According to Expedia’s 2022 Travel Trends Report, more than two-thirds of Americans say they’re planning to “go big” on their next trip. But planning and budgeting for a trip can be stressful. With inflation rising, many people are watching their wallets more closely, so finding ways to save money and stay connected while traveling this summer is more important than ever. Here are some of the latest travel tips to make your next getaway more affordable: • Book Flights Like a Pro: According to NerdWallet, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to travel when flying within the United States. NerdWallet also
suggests booking domestic airline tickets one to three months in advance. The more flexible you can be with your desired timeframe, destination, and airport, the better. Be on the hunt for exclusive partnerships that offer travel discounts, like T-Mobile TRAVEL with Priceline, a new site with travel deals of up to 40% off hotels and select rental cars, available exclusively for T-Mobile and Metro by TMobile customers. • Bring it, Don’t Buy it: If you’re looking to save a few dollars while traveling, bring your own snacks and reusable water bottle. Many airports have refillable water stations available. Having a designated travel charging kit
in your luggage with charging cables for your smartwatch, phone, computer and more will save you the added and often inflated cost of buying on the go. • Maximize Your Phone Plan Internationally: When traveling overseas, purchasing a local SIM for that designated country will save you roaming charges and fees. An international SIM card is another option for those traveling to multiple countries for short periods of time. Make sure to check with your wireless provider for what’s included in your plan. For example, T-Mobile customers get 5GB of free high-speed data each month with no international data-roaming charges, with up to 5G speeds where available, in more than 210 countries and destinations on the provider’s most popular plan, Magenta MAX, and on the Business Unlimited Ultimate plan. • Road Trip Smarter: Even though gas prices are soaring, those with large families, pets and a love for singalongs often still prefer to travel the open road when vacationing. Finding the best gas prices is easy with apps like GasBuddy and Gas Guru, which provide updated gas prices in your area. You can also save money at the pump leveraging other rewards programs, such as those offered by your phone provider. T-Mobile teamed up with Shell and the Fuel Rewards program to offer customers on qualifying plans an exclusive 25 cents off per gallon of gas this summer through the week of Labor Day via T-Mobile Tuesdays. With the price of everything on the rise, you’ll want to tap into benefits and cost-cutting opportunities where you can to stretch your dollar further, and take the amazing vacation you’ve been planning for so long. Study Shows Americans Aren’t Planning For Future Healthcare Needs

known as Living Independently for the Elderly (LIFE). These programs can make living at home a safer and more affordable option than institutionalized care.
As you explore your options, consider the following tips: • Leave no stone unturned: From transportation to medical appointments to help with household tasks, consider what your potential needs might be and research programs in your community to address them.
“This program has provided me with the best caregiver. She is a great person with a great heart, and she goes above and beyond during my home care services,” says Luther Bell, PACE participant.
While there are assistance programs available to help seniors age with dignity, the Cross Country Workforce Solutions Group survey found that the majority of older Americans are unaware of an important one:
“I feel like I have improved a lot in many ways because my caregiver meal preps for me, provides quality care, and our daily interactions bring positivity to my life.”
Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a national program of comprehensive care for adults age 55 and over who would prefer to remain living at home rather than in a nursing facility.

your health. • Consider your budget: While the average senior collects just $18,000 annually in social security, 57% of survey respondents have not considered the budget they will need for aged care services and support. Take time to learn how much various aspects of care will cost, factoring in standard living expenses. For additional survey results and information about home healthcare, visit www.crosscountryhealthcare.com/aging-in-place. “At a time when the burden on hospitals and health systems has at times compromised their ability to deliver quality care, living at home with support can provide optimized care and independence to seniors,” says Jung. Easy DIY Summer Projects To Tackle Around The House Summer is the most popular time of the year for home renovations, with the great weather making indoor and outdoor fixes a breeze. From simple remodel ideas to budget-friendly outdoor updates, these are the top projects to tackle this summer, according to a DIY expert.
For this project, all you need is a cabinet door, wood panels found at your home improvement store, glue and paint or stain. Once you have all the materials,
Shake It Up If you’re craving a modern aesthetic, but don’t want to take on an expensive and time-consuming renovation, updating cabinets, doors and lighting can make all the difference. “During a recent bathroom remodel, I made shaker doors because they are easy to assemble yet give a nice style and modern look to cabinets,” says Mark Robertson, the DIYer behind Mark the Builder, who specializes in accent walls and bathroom and kitchen remodels. “To give plain cabinets the shaker look, we basically take a door frame and add raised panels to it.”
recommends applying a peel and stick wallpaper over cabinets or doors for a quick refresh.
ing on resale websites—many just need a quick coat of stain or paint to look brand new.
Under-the-cabinet lighting will help highlight your handy work and offer extra illumination at night. To easily install lighting without the hassle of hardware, Robertson suggests cutting small pieces of TRex Super Glue Tape and attaching them to LED light strips. The high-tack, double-sided tape offers super-gluelike adhesive strength for quick mounting and leaves no mess behind.
For those who want to build it themselves, Robertson recommends making an industrial pipe shelf using reclaimed wood—typically one to two inches thick— and a three-quarter inch industrial black pipe.
Combine Storage With Style measure and cut the horizontal pieces to the length of the door and make the vertical rails two inches thick. Glue the panels together and then secure the molding to the cabinet door. For renters, Robertson

Lay the piece of wood flat, trace the circular part of the pipe onto the wood and then drill two holes. Slide the wood over the pipe to assemble the shelf. Dress Your Walls From indoors to out, options for accent walls are endless. However, Robertson follows these two design rules: stick with simplistic patterns in formal areas, such as a dining room or living room; and use abstract shapes in bedrooms, game rooms and offices. To achieve a perfect accent wall every time, Robertson uses templates instead of a tape measure.
“If you are making a wall with panels four inches apart, cut a piece of scrap to four inches and use it for all of the design,” he says. “You will get the same spacing for the entire project and everything will be symmetrical.” Create an Outdoor Oasis Summer is the optimal time to fix up the backyard. From staining the deck to building a new fire pit, there are several projects that will make the area pop. While working outdoors, Robertson suggests keeping T-Rex Waterproof Tape handy for quick fixes. The strong tape provides waterproof adhesion so you can easily patch a leak in a swimming pool, tape up a hole in a bucket, or repair a garden hose damaged from wear and tear. After tackling these DIY projects, you’ll enjoy interiors and exteriors that look and feel as bright and fresh as the summer weather. (StatePoint)

An Unhappy Workforce Can Cost Money. How To Turn Things Around
Amid the Great Resignation, the pandemic-era phenomenon of employees leaving their jobs, new research studying employees in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland are shedding light on how employers can retain their staff and keep them happy.
in workplace culture, people feel its full impact -- they feel seen, valued and motivated to put in a little extra effort,” says Dr. Meisha-Ann Martin, senior director of People Analytics and Research at Workhuman.
“Unleashing the Human Element at Work: Transforming Workplaces Through Recognition,” a new research report by Gallup and Workhuman, reveals that currently, only about one-third of employees say their employer has a formal recognition program, and 81% of senior leaders say recognition is not a major strategic priority for their organization. Industry experts define a culture of recognition at its most basic level as one in which gratitude, praise and appreciation are freely given and regularly received in an authentic and equitable way throughout the organization. 4 Steps To Prep Your Room For Clean Paint Lines A home painting project can be overwhelming, especially if you’re a beginner. However, if you do the right prep work, the painting process doesn’t have to be so intimidating. By following these steps,
you’ll set yourself up for clean paint lines and amazing results, no matter your skill level. 1. Purchase Proper Supplies. Before the prep work can even begin, it’s vital to purchase the proper supplies. Create your list by considering the steps you’ll take to complete your project: cleaning the wall surface, taping off edges and then of course, applying paint.
As you shop, remember that affordability doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality tools. Use new sandpaper and sponges so the surface is smooth and clean to start. Fresh brushes and rollers will lead to professional-looking results, and a highq u a l i t y, cost-effective painter’s tape, like Duck Brand Clean Release, will help with achieving clean paint lines. Despite what many DIYers believe, using a primer is a necessary step, and shouldn’t be considered optional. Primer acts as a barrier and prevents old paint from showing through, so it really can make all the difference. In most cases, you’ll only need one coat of new paint if the surface is properly
primed. Once you’ve chosen your primer, don’t forget the paint! Select the color and finish you prefer; then, purchase a sample and paint a small area to ensure it meets your expectations. 2. Declutter the Space. Once you’ve grabbed your supplies and decided on the paint color and finish, remove as much out of the room as possible to avoid any damage during painting. Small, easy-to-move furniture should be temporarily relocated to another space. Heavy, hard-to-move furniture can at least be pushed away from the wall and protected with covers. Switch plate covers, window treatments and light fixtures can be removed and stored until your paint has dried. 3. Make the Surface Smooth and Clean. For the perfect smooth finish, start by lightly sanding your walls to eliminate any existing imperfections. This will likely cause dust and debris to fall throughout the room, so vacuum and wipe down walls after you’re finished sanding, as the paint will apply
more evenly if the surface is clean. The walls can be wiped with a sponge and a mixture of dish soap and warm water. 4. Tape and Protect. The final step to prepare your room for paint is to tape the walls and protect the floors and any other areas you want to keep paint-free. When applying Duck Brand Clean Release or other painter’s tapes, keep the pieces one to two feet in length for the easiest application and securest seal. For an extra-tight hold, use a tool such as a putty knife to smooth down the edges and help prevent paint bleed. As for the floor, cover the surface with an old sheet or protective film to catch any paint drips or spills, taping down the edges if needed to make sure no paint leaks through the edges. Once you’ve followed these steps, you’re set up for success and prepared to begin painting! Time to pick up your brush and start that room transformation. (StatePoint)
ognized. But Dr. Martin advises companies to consider how they go about recognizing their employees. The study found that more than half of employees who say the recognition they receive at work is not authentic or equitable are actively looking or watching for new employment opportunities. Further, two in five employees say they are not receiving enough recognition from leaders at their organization -- only a few times a year at most -- when the bare minimum for positive impact is at least a few times a month. Recognition of employees is not only useful for retention, it can assist with recruitment too, say analysts. “In today’s competitive talent marketplace, the power of employee referrals cannot be understated. Yet, only 28% of employees in this study strongly agree they would recommend their organization as a great place to work. Organizations that acknowledge employees through strong cultures of recognition can boost this figure to 68%,” says Ed O`Boyle, Gallup’s global practice leader. “When organizations celebrate employees’ successes and contributions, those employees pay it forward and become brand ambassadors.” To read the full report and learn more about Workhuman, a leading global provider of technology solutions, analytics, expertise and services to build human-centered workplaces, visit workhuman.com. “Recognizing employees is a simple way organizations can demonstrate their commitment to their employees and inspire them to feel connected, confident and cared about, and in today’s climate, it’s no longer a nice-to-have program but rather a business imperative,” says Dr. Martin. stay safe while pumping and using fuel. “Gas prices are high and you may be cutting back, but you’ll still be using gas, diesel and kerosene, and accidents can still happen,” said Dan Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development for Scepter, the leader in fuel containers. “It’s important to follow basic fuel safety practices, at the pump, at home, and on weekend adventures.” To help people stay safe around fuel, Scepter offers some basic tips: • Never use gas to start grills or a bonfire, kill pests, or as a cleaning agent. • Never smoke near a fuel container or place it near an open flame, even if it’s empty. Gas fumes are invisible and are still potentially dangerous. One spark can cause gasoline vapors to ignite. • Keep children and pets away from fuel pumps, fuel containers and running equipment. • Use the right container: red for
any way. • Inspect fuel containers for leaks and cracks before each fill-up. If there are any signs of aging, carefully dispose of the container and purchase a new one with essential safety features. For example, the rugged Scepter SmartControl fuel containers for gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuels feature controllable flow, child safety features, and are designed to substantially exceed ASTM and CPSC minimum standards. Additionally, all Scepter portable fuel containers in the United States already include FMDs certified to the ASTM F3326 standard. • Place fuel containers on the ground during filling to avoid sparks from static electricity and spills inside the vehicle. • Only fill containers to the “fill line” to allow for expansion with changing temperatures. • Before pouring from a fuel can that has expanded in the summer
• Wipe up any spills immediately. • When filling up equipment, do it outside to avoid breathing in fumes.
• Store fuel containers in a dry, well-ventilated place, outside the living space of your home and away from furnaces, water heaters, direct sunlight, and other sources of heat. New School Year Tips From A Foot And Ankle Surgeon
Kids’ feet grow and change quickly, which means you’ll likely be shoe shopping this back-to-school season. As you head to the store, consider these tips and insights from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

• Find the right fit: “Your child’s feet can grow up to two sizes in six months, so you need to account for rapid growth when buying shoes,” says Dr. Michael Coyer, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Coyer cautions against the temptation to buy oversized shoes though, as they can cause the foot to slide forward, putting excessive pressure on the toes. “A good fit is about a finger’s width from the end of the shoe to the tip of the big toe,” he says.

If you notice signs of infection such as pain, redness or fluid draining from the area, schedule an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon, who can perform a simple, safe inoffice procedure to remove the affected area of the nail. • Replace wornout shoes: Because shoes lose shock absorption over time, wearing wornout shoes can elevate the risk for heel pain, Achilles tendonitis and even ankle sprains and stress fractures.

“Inspect old shoes and replace any that lack sufficient cushioning and arch support, or have excessive wear to the bottom or around the edges of the sole,” says Dr. Coyer. “When shopping, don’t assume a new pair will offer proper support. Check to see that the toe box is wide enough and the shoe doesn’t bend in the middle of the sole.” • Protect young athletes: “Every new season, we see an increase in ankle injuries among young athletes,” says Dr. Coyer. Help prevent sports-related injuries by equipping your child with proper footwear this fall. Start each sports season with new shoes and always buy the right shoe for the sport. You can also protect young athletes by never allowing them to play through foot pain. Foot pain isn’t normal and if it lasts for more than a few days and interferes with normal activities, seek medical attention. • Consider other factors: Children with flat feet need shoes with a wide toe box, maximum arch support and shock absorption. The best shoes for flat feet are stiffsoled, lace-up shoes that have enough depth for an orthotic insert, if necessary. “A common persisting myth is that children will ‘grow out of’ foot problems. But foot problems developed in childhood can become more serious if left unaddressed,” says Dr. Coyer. “One of the most important steps you can take to prevent pediatric foot issues is by taking time during the back-toschool season to buy footwear that fits well and offers good support. Further, having your child evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon member of ACFAS at the first sign of trouble can help reduce the likelihood of worsening problems and help keep your child active.” For more back-to-school tips, information on foot and ankle health, and to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts. org, the patient education website for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. But with the market overflowing with eye creams, gels, serums, and masks it is pretty difficult to choose what best suits your needs. Where words are few, it is said that the eyes can convey a lot. And this is especially true in these Covid times when we wear masks that allow our eyes to express themselves more freely because our faces are covered. But do we actually take the same care of

them that we do with our skin? We tend to overlook the most important part of the skinthe eyes-while exfoliating, moisturising, and applying sunscreen to maintain healthy skin. Anyone can experience nightmares due to dryness, wrinkles, fine lines, and puffiness under the eyes. Because the skin around our eyes is so delicate, extra care must be taken. Additionally, under-eye bags and dark circles are the first signs of aging to appear on this area of the body. The reasons are wide and varied. This is mostly brought about by a lack of proper care. It may come as a surprise, but the eyes do a lot of work all along the day from blinking to expressing your emotions which contributes to premature aging. Also, the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than other areas. The other contributing factors include genetics, exposure to ultraviolet rays, and most importantly, lifestyle choices. Changing lifestyles and resorting to natural cures are the best solutions, but it is not always that those can be effective immediately. But with the market overflowing with eye creams, gels, serums, and masks it is pretty difficult to choose what best suits your needs. So, Anjula Masurkar, Clinical Director ENTOD Pharmaceuticals decodes Which is better, eye creams, gel, or masks? Under-eye creams
From reducing dark circles to keeping the skin hydrated and supple, under-eye creams are gaining prominence for a reason. They help reduce dark circles and keep the skin hydrated and graceful. In this day and age of stress and inconsistent lifestyle, under-eye creams are a must for anybody’s skincare regime. Eye gels Another widely used eye-care product is gel. The main difference between an under-eye cream and a gel is the texture. While undereye creams are thicker and richer, gels are light, refreshing, and silky. Both contain nearly the same anti-aging elements such as antioxidants, skin-restoring, and skinreplenishing ingredients. So, how to choose between the two? Eye gels work wonders in the morning refreshing the skin around the eyes and helping reduce morning puffiness. It also works well under makeup. On the other hand, eye creams should be used if you prefer a creamy texture and the skin near the eyes is drier than the rest. Eye masks Yet another solution for puffy eyes is a mask. Not to be confused with the piece of cloth that we wear to ward off Covid. This mask helps reduce tiredness in the eyes and dark circles. This again has to be chosen depending on the skin type. If a dark circle is what bothering you then your eye mask must have a host of ingredients such as niacinamide, idebenone, glycolic, vitamin C, and black pearl extract. For tired-looking eyes, the mask must have hydrating agents such as hyaluronic acid, aloe, green tea, and collagen. There is a misconception that using a good eye mask for a week or two can work wonders on eye bags and dark circles. However, that is not the case. Eye masks are a good homecare option. But that is not an alternative to in-clinic treatment. So, If you want a dramatic difference, then you have to visit a skin doctor and find out which treatment suits best for you such as laser lightening and mesotherapy, etc for dark circles and ultrasound or plasma for skin tightening and reduction of eye bags. This, however, must be complemented with homecare products and a set skincare routine that has been working well for you. (Courtesy: https://www.dtnext.in/)

Intermittent Fasting May Help Heal Nerve Damage
Intermittent fasting changes the gut bacteria activity of mice and increases their ability to recover from nerve damage. The new research is published in Nature and was conducted by Imperial College London researchers.
ered in mice and is hoped to also hold true for any future human trials. The team state that the bacteria that produces IPA, Clostridium sporogenesis, is found naturally in the guts of humans as well as mice and IPA is present in human’s
Giovanni from Imperial’s Department of Brain Sciences. “Intermittent fasting has previously been linked by other studies to wound repair and the growth of new neurons—but our study is the first to explain exactly how fasting might help heal nerves.” Fasting as a potential treatment The study assessed nerve regeneration of mice where the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve running from the spine down the leg, was crushed. Half of the mice underwent intermittent fasting (by eating as much as they liked followed by not eating at all on alternate days), while the other half were free to eat with no restrictions at all.
They observed how fasting led to the gut bacteria increasing production of a metabolite known as 3-Indolepropionic acid (IPA), which is required for regenerating nerve fibers called axons—thread-like structures at the ends of nerve cells that send out electro-chemical signals to other cells in the body. This novel mechanism was discov-
bloodstreams too. “There is currently no treatment for people with nerve damage beyond surgical reconstruction, which is only effective in a small percentage of cases, prompting us to investigate whether changes in lifestyle could aid recovery,” said study author Professor Simone Di
These diets continued for a period of 10 days or 30 days before their operation, and the mice’s recovery was monitored 24 to 72 hours after the nerve was severed. The length of the regrown axons was measured and was about 50% greater in mice that had been fasting.
Professor Di Giovanni said, “I think the power of this is that opens up a whole new field where we have to wonder: is this the tip of an iceberg? Are there going to be other bacteria or bacteria metabolites that can promote repair?” Investigation reveals metabolism link The researchers also studied how fasting led to this nerve regeneration. They found that there were significantly higher levels of specific metabolites, including IPA, in the blood of diet-restricted mice. To confirm whether IPA led to nerve repair, the mice were treated with antibiotics to clean their guts of any bacteria. They were then given genetically-modified strains of Clostridium sporogenesis that could or could not produce IPA. “When IPA cannot be produced by these bacteria and it was almost absent in the serum, regeneration was impaired. This suggests that the IPA generated by these bacteria has an ability to heal and regenerate damaged nerves,” Professor Di
Giovanni said. Importantly, when IPA was administered to the mice orally after a sciatic nerve injury, regeneration and increased recovery was observed between two and three weeks after injury. The next stage for this research will be to test this mechanism for spinal cord injuries in mice as well as testing whether administering IPA more frequently would maximize its efficacy. “One of our goals now is to systematically investigate the role of bacteria metabolite therapy.” Professor Di Giovanni said. More studies will need to investigate whether IPA increases after fasting in humans and the efficacy of IPA and intermittent fasting as a potential treatment in people. He said: “One of the questions that we haven’t explored fully is that, since IPA lasts in blood for four to six hours in high concentration, would administering it repeatedly throughout the day or adding it to a normal diet help maximize its therapeutic effects?” (Courtesy: https:// neurosciencenews.com/)

tive pulmonary disease. COPD is a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe and gets worse over time. Like other diseases, it often affects more than the person living with it. COPD can affect the whole family. Joel Africk found this out firsthand. “I watched my mother serve as the main caregiver for my father with COPD,” said Africk, president of Respiratory Health Association (RHA). “The follow-up appointments, the coordination of his care with his care team, the supervised exercise – my mother juggled it all. She was the driving force in my dad’s care.” Luckily, because of the work he does, Africk said, “I was able to put our kitchen table conversations in front of a dedicated team of patients, caregivers and providers, and ‘The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit’ was created. We worked to simplify some of the most complicated parts of being a COPD caregiver and provide resources to help.” Caregivers who feel confident about what to do often provide better care for their loved ones. “The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit” offers advice on a variety of topics for patients and caregivers, including how to prepare for doctors’ appointments, navigate changes
in home life, provide help after a COPD flare-up or hospital stay and stay mentally and physically healthy through it all. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Learn More Breathe Better® program recently partnered with RHA to update and make the toolkit more broadly available online. Learn More Breathe Better works to improve the lives of the millions of people living with COPD and other lung conditions. Through its educational efforts, NHLBI reaches patients, providers, researchers and now, caregivers. According to Jim Kiley, M.D., director of NHLBI’s Division of Lung Diseases, “COPD is a complex disease that over time can become debilitating. That’s why early diagnosis, treatment and disease management are so important. It can be overwhelming for many patients and their families.” To help with disease management challenges, “The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit” comes with medication and vaccination tracking sheets and a list of questions to ask doctors. It also features information caregivers can use to support their own health and well-being, such as how to find support groups and backup care. The right tools can make all the difference. “‘The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit’ is a valuable resource that will help clarify what caregivers need to know to help themselves and their loved ones,” Kiley said. Patan Durbar Square
Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of the city of Lalitpur in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attractions is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided. The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newar architecture. The square floor is tiled with red bricks. There are many temples and statues in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square built by the Newa People. A center of both Hinduism and Buddhism, Patan Durbar Square has 136 “bahals” (courtyards) and 55 major temples. The square was heavily damaged by the earthquake in April 2015. The history of Durbar Square is not
clear. Although the Malla Kings of Lalitpur are credited with the establishment of the royal square, it is known that the site is an ancient crossroad. The Pradhanas, who settled around the site before the
Mallas, have connections with the Durbar Square. Some chronicles hint that the Thakuri dynasty built a palace and made reforms to the locality, but there is little evidence of this. Scholars are certain that Patan was a prosperous city since ancient times. The Malla Kings made important changes to the square. Most of the current architecture is from the
1600s, constructed during the reign of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla and his son Srinivasa Sukriti. Some of the notable Malla Kings who improved the square include Purandarasimha, Sivasimha Malla and Yo g a narendra Malla. Patan is one of the oldest Buddhist cities. It is a center of both Hinduism and Buddhism with 136 bahals or courtyards and 55 major temples. Most of these structures are in the vicinity of the Durbar Square. Krishna Mandir Krishna temple is the most important temple in Patan Durbar Square. A three-storied structure, it was built in the local variety of Shikhara style called Granthakuta.
The stone carvings along the beam above the first and second-floor pillar are most notable. The first-floor pillar carvings narrate the events of the Mahabharata, while on the second floor there are visual carvings from Ramayana. The temple was built in 1667 by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla. It is said that one night the King saw Lord Krishna and his consort Srimati Radha standing in front of the royal palace. He ordered a temple to be built on the same spot. There are 21 golden pinnacles in the temple. Below the pinnacles are three stories. The first floor holds the main shrine of Lord Krishna with shrines of Radha and Rukmini at each side. The second floor is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the third to Lokeshwor (Avalokiteshvara). The square is crowded with thousands of Hindu Pilgrims and devotees during Krishnastami. Bhimsen Temple Bhimsen Temple was built by Srinivasa Malla in 1680. It is renowned for its three interconnected golden windows. Bhimsen is a
great personality in Mahabharata. He was known to be brave and strong. In Newa, he is traditionally worshiped as a god of business and trade.Tourists are not allowed inside the temple. Vishwanath Temple Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to God Shiva. It was built in 1627 during the reign of Siddhi Narsingh Malla. The roof supports are decorated with erotic carvings similar to imagery widespread in Shiva temples in India. The temple is guarded by two stone elephants in the front entrance. On the other side of the temple is the sculpture of a bull, Shiva’s vehicle. A stone linga is enshrined inside the temple. Taleju Bhawani Temple Taleju temple was built by Siddhi Narsingh Malla in 1640 and rebuilt by Srinivasa Malla in 1667 after a fire. Taleju Bhawani was the personal deity of the Malla kings. It is a five-storey temple with tripleroofs. The 14th century chronicle of Gopala kings hint a Taleju temple was built by the Pradhanas before the Mallas.

(Continued From Page 01) Think Nobel Prize for science or Academy Award for film. That’s the level of award Rajashekara, an Electrical and Computer Engineering Department member who humbly likes to be called “Raja,” has taken home. “When I received the e-mail about my selection, I could not believe it for a moment,” he said. “This award definitely shows the importance of energy efficiency improvement and reducing emissions.” As the former lead propulsion system engineer for General Motors’ IMPACT electric vehicle, Raja may be better known as the man who helped advance the technologies that led to the first commercially produced electric vehicle, the GM EV1 in 1995. He calls himself a “futurist” because he is always working on futuristic projects. After ushering in the era of electric and hybrid cars from 1989-2006 by advancing the technologies including the EV1, he left his position at GM/Delphi for his next revolutionary project. At Rolls Royce, he worked on advanced architectures for more electric and hybrid electric aircrafts bringing to life his notions of converting ancillary equipment used on aircrafts (like air conditioning and cooking devices) to electricity, leading to next generation aircrafts beyond the 787 Dreamliner-types. With those futuristic projects in the past, he says the next big thing will be flying cars – and he’s all in. If his track record is proof, it may be time to look skyward for a parking spot. “Professor Rajashekara does not see limits, only possibilities. Electric vehicles are changing the way the world moves, and he has played a vital role in the exploration and improvement of this innovation,” said Renu Khator, University of Houston president. “I congratulate him for this well-earned global distinction and for his role in positioning the University of Houston as the ‘Energy University.’” The Prize
Rajashekara is the winner in the New Ways of Energy Applications category for outstanding contributions to transportation electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions. He is engaged in power plants for electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles; electric and hybrid electric aircraft systems; hybrid flying vehicles and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. He is the owner of 36 U.S. patents and 15 foreign patents. The prize honors “outstanding scientific research and scientific-technical developments in the field of energy which promote greater efficiency and environmental security for energy sources on Earth in the interests of all mankind.” He is joined as a 2022 laureate by Viktor Orlov, chief specialist of the Centre for Innovative Technologies (Rosatom in Russia) and pioneer in thermonuclear physics; and Mercouri Kanatzidis, professor of chemistry and materials science at Northwestern University and senior researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory. He is one of the most highly cited chemists, with more than 1,450 published scientific papers. The laureates were selected by the international committee of scientists from 11 countries: the United States, Italy, China, Hungary, India, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Korea. The awarding ceremony will be held during Russian Energy Week in Moscow, October 12-14. “I have been working on transportation electrification for a long time, starting with Rail Transportation in ABB, then electric and hybrid vehicles in General Motors and Delphi, and then for Aircraft electrification in Rolls-Royce. At the University of Houston, I was able to continue to work in this area and advance the technologies for reducing emissions,” Rajashekara said. Even with that pedigree though, Raja was shocked when news of the award came. (Continued On Page 25)

5 Tips For Transitioning Back To School
Heading back to the classroom is a big change following a summer of fun in the sun. Some kids eagerly embrace the idea of once again being surrounded by friends and thrive on the familiar tempo a new school year brings. Others resist the disruption to their laid-back lifestyle. Understanding which mindset your kids are taking into this school year can help you set the stage for success. Creating a transition plan for your family makes the return to school a team effort and reinforces a support system that is essential for kids’ academic achievement. “Even students who are excited about the new school year can benefit from a structured transition plan,” said Robyn Knecht, director of counseling for St. Joseph’s Indian School, a Native American residential school that helps students move beyond the cycle of poverty, addiction and mental illness with an education and opportunities for a brighter future. “Talking with your student about what aspects of school they’re looking forward to, and where they might have wor-
goals that push his or her comfort boundaries, such as aiming for mostly B-pluses on first quarter report cards. Setting milestone goals that ladder up to larger, longer-term goals allows your student to build self-esteem, celebrate successes and stay motivated on the journey.
ries, allows you to tailor your transition plan to their needs.” Start this school year off right with these tips for a smooth transition from the education experts at St. Joseph’s: Get Back into a Routine During the summer months, when there’s no bus to catch or school bell to beat each morning, many kids have different sleep schedules and less formal routines throughout the day. As you approach the start of a school year, begin easing back toward your classroom routine by
gradually making bedtimes and wake-up times earlier. Introduce some structure with projects that blend play with learning to help reengage those thinking caps. Set Attainable Academic Goals Having high educational aspirations is a protective factor that may help youth avoid at-risk behaviors. Goals should be based on the child’s abilities. Asking a student who consistently earns Bs to suddenly become a straight-A student probably isn’t realistic. However, you can ask your child to create
Make Organization a Priority Modeling good organizational skills can help your student develop good habits that allow him or her to demonstrate a commitment to school and school-related responsibilities. For younger kids, that may be creating a designated place to store backpacks when they get home so you avoid the morning scramble. You can ask kids of all ages to help manage a file system where you keep school papers that need to be signed and returned. Older kids can benefit from learning how to keep to-do lists and their own calendars to manage school, sports, activities and social commitments. Build Positive Relationships While your parental involvement at home plays a vital role in your student’s success, so does posi-
tive engagement with supportive teachers at school. Leading up to the start of the school year, make a point to meet new teachers and develop connections that show your student he or she has a team of resources ready to share in celebrating achievements and provide a helping hand if challenges arise. Encourage Involvement in Social Activities Particularly for a student who lacks enthusiasm about school, finding areas for him or her to explore personal interests and excel can be particularly valuable. Treat the start of the school year as an opportunity to discover which social clubs and activities are available and find one (or more) that sparks enthusiasm. These non-academic settings can play a helpful role in developing close relationships with positive peers, which is another protective factor that supports positive outcomes for youth. Learn more about the important ways you can influence your child’s success this school year and beyond at stjo.org.
Reducing Food Insecurity In Infants And Toddlers Food insecurity isn’t a new problem in the United States, but the economic upheaval created by the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the problem. During the pandemic, households in the United States with children experienced an increase in food insecurity, despite overall rates of food insecurity staying the same. In 2019, 13.6% of households with children were food insecure, but by 2020, that number increased to 14.8%, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In general, child food insecurity rates are higher than overall food insecurity rates, according to the annual Map the Meal Gap study conducted by Feeding America, a nationwide nonprofit network of food banks. According to data from the Children’s Defense Fund,
this is particularly prevalent among low-income families, single mother households and Black and Hispanic households. What Food Insecurity Means for Children Food insecurity and hunger are closely related but not quite the same. People who are food insecure don’t have reliable, ongoing access to an adequate supply of affordable, nutritious food. Hunger is a physical condition; food insecurity reflects barriers to obtaining food such as finances, physical location and transportation. Infants and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies because their nutrient needs are high, especially in relation to the size of their stomachs and appetites. Caregivers in food-insecure
households may have little choice but to settle for cheaper, energydense but nutrient-poor foods. As a result, food-insecure infants and toddlers are not receiving adequate nutrition even when they may be receiving enough calories to satisfy hunger. Even if a child isn’t physically starving, inadequate nutrition can negatively affect health in numerous ways, including immune system function, low weight, learning and developmental delays, vitamin deficiencies and more. Ways to Help Promote Better Nutrition Support good nutrition during infancy and toddlerhood for your own children and others in the community with these practical tips:
• Participate in (or introduce those in need to) aid programs. Government nutrition assistance programs help provide essential nutrition needs during infant and toddler years. One example is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides a variety of resources including food and health care referrals to support mothers and young children at nutritional risk, including pregnant, breastfeeding and post-partum women, as well as infants and children up to age 5. Another example is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides benefits low-income families can use to purchase nutritious foods. For children and adults who are en-
rolled in certain care programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps ensure they have access to nutritious meals and snacks. • Make purchases that work extra hard. In addition to producing foods that encourage better nutrition for children, some brands also make contributions that help offset food insecurity. For example, for every box of Plum Organics Super Smoothies purchased, the company donates a pouch to a child in need through its “The Full Effect” program. The smoothie is a specially formulated blend of fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains with no added sugars designed to fight malnutrition and help fortify the diets of children who don’t have access to regular, healthy meals. When you’re organizing your endof-life affairs, preparing a will is likely high on your list of priorities. What you may not realize is that there are different kinds of wills. A last will and testament is probably what you think of first; it’s a legal directive about how your as-
sets should be handled upon your death. An ethical will, on the other hand, isn’t a legal document at all. It’s a way for you to convey thoughts, life lessons learned, the intentions behind your will and wishes for your loved ones. If you think you’d like to prepare an ethical will, here are some tips from RememberingALife.com, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association, to guide you in the
process: Decide on your format. An ethical will can be written, but it can also be delivered via audio or video. There’s not a right or wrong approach; it depends on how you’re most comfortable communicating. One consideration is your comfort level with audio or video editing. Unless you’re confident you can say what you want, the way you want in one pass, you’ll need some basic editing skills to ensure your message is conveyed exactly as you wish. Determine your purpose. Ethical wills can serve many different purposes. You may use it to convey your love and appreciation to your loved ones or to mend fences you weren’t able to while alive. Your ethical will can also be a way to share your values, what you’ve learned in life and your dreams for those you hold dear. It may even be your chance to share the secret ingredient in a beloved family recipe. Gather your thoughts. Drafting an ethical will can be an emo-
tional process, so organizing what you’d like to say ahead of time can help keep you focused. Make notes about the points you’d like to share, adding details or embellishments as you wish. However, take care to avoid saying anything in your ethical will that contradicts your legal will. Start writing. Even if you ultimately plan to record your ethical will, writing out what you plan to say can be a good idea. Remember this isn’t a formal disser- t a t i o n or award-winning novel, so convey your thoughts freely. Clarity is important, but don’t be afraid to let your personality, humor and other characteristics shine through.

How To Create Connections With Your Child’s Teacher (Continued From Page 01) Plus, teachers who connect with their classroom families help families feel seen, heard and represented in the classroom. “When parents and teachers connect, they can create a stronger support system,” said Tyreca Elliott from KinderCare’s education team. “Bridging the gap between home and school gives children continuity, improves academic outcomes and nurtures children’s social and

Your child is the teacher’s priority too, and he or she might have some tips and tricks to help you help your child. 2. Communicate About Communications. Drop off and pick up times can sometimes be too busy for more than a “hi” or “bye.” Ask your child’s teacher how he or she likes to t communicate, and share your preference, too. emotional well-being. When families and teachers work together, children can succeed.” Building connections with teachers opens lines of communication between home and school, allowing families to learn about their child’s day and helping teachers feel supported. Consider these three tips from KinderCare teachers to help families create connections and build trust and collaboration with their child’s teacher.

1. Be Intentional. Ruby Villarreal, a preschool teacher of nearly 30 years, suggests meeting with your child’s teacher before the first day of school to introduce your child and your family. Share your child’s previous school experience, likes and dislikes as well as any home issues that may impact your child’s mood or behavior, such as a new sibling, re-
like a phone call during a lunch break for a quick update about your child or if you’d rather communicate via email or the school’s app. 3. Make a Big Difference with Little Chats. During pick up or drop off, try to leave time for a brief conversation. This could be a quick chat about something fun your child did over the weekend or why he or she might be having a tough day. It could also mean asking, “What can I ask my child about on the way home?” or finding out about activities you could do to help your child keep learning at home. “Learning is a partnership between families and school,” said Quiana Smith, a 15-year prekindergarten teacher. “Your child will be excited about school and learning when he or she knows you’re excited about it, too.” (Family Features)

Build Friendship Skills For Back-to-School Success When thinking about back-toschool season, most people naturally think of academics. However, it’s just as important to focus on social and emotional skills. Children of all ages are still learning to manage their emotions and get along with others. As they learn these skills, behaviors that make academic learning more challenging for everyone else in the classroom may be seen.
Consider these three skills families can teach their children before school starts to help build friendships. Turn Transitions into Games
child “Can you hop like a bunny while you get your school things together?” or playing a listening game like “Simon Says” can help your child develop executive function skills such as impulse control.
Take Turns One thing younger children often struggle with is the concept of sharing. Adults can forget that to young children sharing implies giving something up, Peters said. If your child struggles to share, try introducing the concept of taking turns: “It’s Mariah’s turn for the slide. When she’s done then you can go,” for example. Help your child practice how to have conversations with playmates about taking turns.
“Social and emotional skills are crucial to a child’s academic success, but they aren’t inherent,” said Carter Peters from KinderCare’s inclusion services team. “Teachers tell us again and again that starting the school year with a grasp on social emotional learning is just as important as knowing academic concepts. Children who are struggling to manage their emotions and transition into the classroom may not be able to focus on academics.”

Play a ‘What if’ Game Help school-age children build a growth mindset by problem-solving responses to common friendship issues. Ask your child “What would you do if…?” and help him or her practice responses. Thinking of responses
ahead of time gives your child a rehearsed playbook to choose from in the moment. The more he or she practices these responses, the less you will see unwanted behaviors such as yelling or hitting. By giving children the autonomy to choose their own responses, you demonstrate your trust in them, which can give children a powerful sense of their own abilities to act maturely. “The need to practice impulse control and self-regulation skills will remain a challenge throughout childhood as executive function skills continue to develop into a person’s mid-20s,” Peters said. “It’s not that children don’t ‘know better,’ it’s more their brains are still learning these vital social and emotional skills.” Building these social skills now can help your children start the school year ready to learn and grow. Reducing Food Insecurity In Infants And Toddlers
(Continued From Page 21)
• Act as a role model for healthy choices. Children learn by example, so be sure your little ones see you enjoying nutritious snacks, filling your plate with appropriate portions and preparing well-rounded meals. When kids are exposed to a wide range of healthy options early in life, those food choices become the norm as they grow older. • Volunteer at a food bank. Getting hands-on by donating your time at a local food bank can help you understand the complexity of food insecurity. Many nutritious selections are perishable, and transporting and storing perishable goods is costly. Volunteers help offset a food bank’s operational expenses by contributing labor to sort donated items, prepare deliveries and more. Surprising Home Upgrade Ideas
Not all great things come in big packages, and home upgrades are an example of the truth in this wisdom. Unexpected, smaller spaces may not get the same attention as high-traffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms and living areas, but their impact can be just as powerful.Get inspired to make improvements to the lesser-used areas of your home with these tips from the home decorating experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.:
fect for the laundry space. Both are options in Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s Aspire Series, which features concealed hinges with selfclose functionality and matching interiors
Entryway It’s the impression that welcomes guests into your home, so even if the space is small, your entryway warrants some TLC. Focus on making it open and inviting by removing any unnecessary furnishings. Some functional storage, like a bench with integrated coat hooks, can serve a practical purpose, and if you have the space, some built-in cabinetry with an eye-catching countertop can incorporate stylish storage. Laundry Room Getting motivated to do chores like laundry is easy when you have a beautiful setting for getting to work. Introducing pops of color in nontraditional places, like the cabinetry, adds a high-end elegance. Water-inspired and earthy hues like Midtown Matte Tidewater or Arcadia Chiffon Cypress are per-
can streamline your morning routine and put you in a more positive frame of mind to start each day. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to closet design, but using cabinetry in place of open shelving and rods lends a more luxurious feel. Plan for adequate hanging and closed storage, and if space allows, be sure to plan for shoes and accessories since these items can easily contribute to a closet’s disarray. Mini Bar If you fear you don’t have room for a mini bar, you may be surprised. Reimagining a larder cabinet, like the ones Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers in 30-, 33-, 36- and 42-inch widths, can create an instant bar out of just about any wall space where you can fit a cabinet. Install it as a coffee bar or traditional bar, or add the optional Appliance Pullout shelf for more versatility.

Pantry Guests may not find themselves in your pantry very often, but you likely use this space every day. Transform your pantry for heightened utility in simple ways like using clear plastic bins for small boxed foods or stylish wicker baskets to hide away snacks. University Of Houston Professor Kaushik Rajashekara Named Global Energy Prize Laureate (Continued From Page 20) “When I received the e-mail about my selection, I could not believe it for a moment. This award definitely shows the importance of energy efficiency improvement and reducing emissions, particularly in the area of transportation, which is responsible for a significant portion of global emissions,” Raja said. His awards are many. He has published more than 250 articles in international journals and conference proceedings, co-authored one book with IEEE Press, and has written six monographs and individual chapters for eight books. He was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2012, the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2013 and the China National Academy of Engineering in 2021 for his contribution to development of the power conversion systems in transportation. He is a laureate of the IEEE Medal for Envi-
ronmental and Safety Technologies (2021), the Richard Kaufman Award (2013) and several other prestigious awards. “The Global Energy Prize is reserved for the best of the best in energy, and Professor Rajashekara is certainly that,” said Ramanan Krishnamoorti, UH chief energy officer. “Since joining the University of Houston in 2016, Raja’s vast knowledge and incredible research output has been instrumental in strengthening the intellectual base at UH and our strategic partnerships with the energy industry.” Amazing Journey Rajashekara’s history of becoming a giant in his field is even more impressive than his innumerable accolades. As a little boy growing up in a village in India with his parents and two brothers, he lived in a one room lean-to that he said was smaller than the office he now occupies at UH. He read by kerosene lamplight and though neither of his parents were educated, his mother was determined that her children would do better and be the
best at whatever they pursued. High school came to his village in time for him to attend. He cobbled together scraps of paper, gluing them to do his homework. His biggest challenge was money. In today’s dollars, the salary his father made per month would equal about $1.75. But his circumstance held neither he nor his siblings back. One, like him, is an engineer and the other is a doctor. An innate and unrelenting will to achieve was borne in the Rajashekara family. Coming from such humble beginnings, Rajashekara says he is proud of his role in convincing a skeptical society that electric cars could become reality. But he says he’s proudest of his ability to help students, colleagues and friends succeed. “To help them succeed in their lives and professions is what I want to see,” he said. That, and them flying to work in their cars over an expanded UH Energy program.
with thin shelves for items like seasoning packets and smaller canned goods. Guest Bathroom Swapping out a tired vanity and countertop is a relatively affordable upgrade that can completely change the style of a secondary bathroom. Be sure to also update the fixtures for a more contemporary look and, if budget allows, replace the flooring. Finish the project with a fresh coat of paint in a light, airy shade and add new textiles and a few decorative touches to complete the job. Find more ideas for updating unexpected spaces in your home at Wellborn.com. Hideaway Storage Spaces One feature that enhances virtually any space is more storage. Having convenient places to tuck away all your stuff makes rooms feel more open and inviting. Hidden storage solutions are often better because you can enjoy the functionality they add to the space without interrupting your design aesthetic. Here are some clever ideas for keeping necessary items tucked out of sight but within easy reach: Built-in Step Stool: If you love the look of tall cabinets but struggle to reach the top shelves, a practical addition is a hidden step ladder in a pullout caddy. Specially designed ladders that fold down extra narrow and feature nonslip rubber treads make this a handy addition you’ll reach for again and again. Paper Towel Pullout: Keep paper towels hidden but close by hiding them in a pullout cabinet such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s 12-inch-wide model, which features a builtin paper towel holder and bottom shelf ideal for organizing cleaning products. There’s also a space behind the paper towels that’s perfect for storing sponges and other kitchen supplies. Drawer Dividers: While you can find many after-market options to organize the insides of your drawers and cabinets, choosing organizers designed to work seamlessly with your cabinetry creates a more polished look (and saves the headaches of measuring and guesstimating the fit). Tray dividers are useful for sorting cookie sheets and baking pans, while you can find dividers in a variety of heights to match drawers below the oven or where you store your cutlery. Another option that serves a similar purpose is pegs, which keep fragile items from shifting when drawers are opened or closed. (Family Features)

Singer Bhupinder Singh Passes Away At 82 Dil dhoondhta hai phir wohi, fursat ke raat din; baithe rahe tasavvur-ejaana kiye huye
One of Gulzar’s most memorable love songs owes a great deal to Mirza Ghalib, whose couplet forms
Keervani. Within this near-perfect combination of poetry and melody was Bhupinder Singh’s slightly sluggish, languid voice that moves just a couple of seconds behind the thought. It was a unique expression, not the kind one had heard from male playback singers of the time.

the first line of the song. Gulzar replaced the word ‘Jee’ with ‘Dil’ and expanded the couplet with lyrical dexterity, while Madan Mohan composed it in the honeyed Raag
Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey and Talat Mahmood in ‘Haqeeqat’. The song was ‘Hoke majboor mujhe’, which found quite some attention. He followed it with others such as Do diwane shahar mein, Naam gum jayega, Karoge yaad to, Meethe bol bole, Kisi nazar ko tera
intezaar aaj bhi, and Ek akela is shehar mein, Kisi ko mukammal, among others. In his later years, he also turned to ghazals, performing often with wife and singer Mitali Singh. (Courtesy: https://indianexpress. com/)
