Lost And Found: Tips For Managing Commonly Misplaced Items

In the haste to break free from your pandemic routine, you may find your new schedule overwhelming and hectic. And with that, comes the inconvenience of misplacing commonly used items.

If you regularly lose track of specific items, digital reminders might be for you. There are a variety of great productivity apps avail-

According to a survey conducted by Bluetooth tracking company Pixie, Americans spend an average of 2.5 days out of each calendar year searching for lost items. The most common reason we keep misplacing our items is absentmindedness. Psychologists have a phrase for this, “If you don’t encode, you can’t retrieve.” This means that if you go through your day without consciously thinking about where you’re placing your keys, your brain has no information stored about the item’s whereabouts. Other factors, such as stress levels and overall mental health, can also play a role in how often you misplace items. Here are a few tips on how to prevent your precious possessions from going missing: 1. Set digital reminders:

able on most smartphones to remind you to double check your wallet before leaving the house. Most calendar apps such as Google Calendar and Outlook have remind features that can help you organize your valuables. There are also useful apps like Todoist that specialize in creating reminders and daily lists. 2. Retrace your steps:

imity. Instead of wasting precious moments searching for your lost item, you can pull up an app to tell you where it is.

With context-dependent memory, your memory is the strongest when you mentally or physically place yourself back in the environment in which the item was lost.

4. Use the power of GPS tracking devices for high-value items:

Reconstructing these events visually can help trigger your memories and be an important step in rediscovering a misplaced item. 3. Try a Bluetooth tracker for smaller items: For smaller items like your phone, wallet and keys, Bluetooth trackers can provide much-needed tech relief. Trackers like these are designed for those times you lose an item within close prox-

When it comes to highly valuable items like photography equipment, luggage and even pets, you’ll need more protection. Products like T-Mobile’s SyncUP Tracker uses a combination of GPS technology and T-Mobile’s reliable nationwide network to track an item at any moment from anywhere. Other devices that rely on Bluetooth technology often have tracking range limitations and shorter battery life. T-Mobile’s SyncUP Tracker includes a rechargeable battery and virtual boundaries that alert you if an item leaves the designated location, all via your smartphone through an app available on both iOS and Android. Just because you lost an item doesn’t mean that you should lose hope or panic. With a few changes to your routine and even some tech upgrades, you’ll find it much easier to cope during those forgetful moments. (StatePoint)

How Medicaid Supports Our Nation’s Health

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities across our nation’s healthcare system, shining a light on disparities in access to care and health outcomes.

• Improved access to care for children: Extending coverage to adults increases enrollment among eligible children and increases the care they received, including wellchild visits, access to dental care, immunizations and vision care.

People of color and those with low incomes are often left without access to high-quality, affordable health insurance, causing them to delay or forgo lifesaving care. Strides have been made in improving access to coverage with the implementation of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act(ACA). To date, more than one in five people in the United States — nearly 75 million Americans—rely on Medicaid for health coverage, making it the country’s largest healthcare program. More than 15 million of these Medicaid enrollees were made eligible through the expansion of coverage brought about by the ACA. Everyone needs access to health insurance, yet those who are least able to afford it are left with the fewest options for coverage. More than 2.2 million adults make too much money to be eligible for traditional Medic-

aid, but not enough to receive subsidies to purchase health insurance through the ACA Marketplace. The benefits of Medicaid for the individual are well-documented, leading to: • Better health outcomes: Among Medicaid participants, there are fewer premature deaths, fewer adults with low income screening positive for depression, improved diabetes and hypertension control and an increase in early-stage cancer diagnoses.

• More adults with low income are getting check-ups and other preventative care and have greater access to early and adequate prenatal care. • Increased economic mobility: Participants have better access to credit, including lowinterest mortgages and auto loans, and have an increased ability to seek employment. The benefits of Medicaid for states’ economic health are also well-documented:

• Reduced uncompensated care costs. Those who can’t afford coverage are more likely to seek care in high-cost settings like emergency rooms. When uninsured patients are unable to pay, these unpaid medical bills drive up uncompensated care costs which in turn are absorbed by hospitals and the federal and state governments. • Improvements in hospital budgets, especially for rural hospitals. • Fewer evictions among renters with low income. Perhaps most importantly, Medicaid provides peace of mind to people who would otherwise be uninsured. As a nation still in the trenches of the pandemic, it is crucial that we move towards ensuring everyone living in the United States has access to quality, affordable health coverage. New Efforts Are Helping Close The Eye Care Gap For Children (Continued From Page 02) “The ability to see is not a privilege. It is a right owed to every single kid in our community and beyond,” says, Shlomi Nachman, company group chairman, Cardiovascular & Specialty Solutions Group and Johnson & Johnson Vision.

In an effort to reduce vision care inequities, the program also provides students with nocost eye health education, screening, eye exams, glasses and special follow-up treatment and care, if necessary.

As it turns out, teachers are frequently the first to notice a child needs vision correction. Teachers have a unique ability to identify behavioral changes and notice when children suffer socially and academically, which may be attributed to poor vision.

In the South Florida area, Johnson & Johnson Vision and LCIF are collaborating with the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired through its Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program to help 20,000 students facing inequities get much needed eye care, including educational eye health materials in four languages to meet the needs of diverse communities. “This program enables us to ensure children in our community have the eye exams and glasses they need to be successful in school and to potentially prevent serious eye health conditions before they cause permanent damage,” says Virginia A. Jacko, president and CEO, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired and Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program.

According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association Ophthalmology, students in grades 3 to 7 who received vision correction through a schoolbased vision program achieved better reading scores. This is why Sight For Kids provides teachers with training to deliver eye health education and mobilizes local Lions Clubs to screen for common eye conditions. Students identified with potential vision impairment or eye ailments are then referred to healthcare providers for a comprehensive evaluation.

St. Lucie County Schools.

“As teachers, if we notice the signs of vision problems, we can refer students and their families to the proper health care provider,” says Edna Johnson, a grade school teacher at

Nearly 2,000 kids in South Florida have received an eye exam since September 2021 alone, thanks to Sight For Kids and 4 million have globally in the past year. Among those who’ve benefitted from the program is Rajiv who was prescribed his first pair of glasses. His mom knew his interaction in class was being affected due to poor vision, but she was unable to take time off work to get him

an eye exam. Yensi’s parents don’t have insurance and couldn’t afford eye care, but through the program, Yensi received a referral for a free exam. Kimberly’s parents, who recently immigrated to the United States, didn’t feel safe seeking eye care for their second grader. Thanks to Sight For Kids, Kimberly was prescribed her first pair of glasses in an environment where her family could feel safe and educated in their native language. Ruth’s family also recently immigrated. Diagnosed by the optometrist at the Sight for Kids screening, Ruth is back in class wearing glasses and keeping up with her classmates. “Many times, immigrant students do not have the access, ability, or insurance to cover vision exams and they struggle in school or socially,” says Ruth’s mother. One clear way to help children thrive in school is to make sure they get an eye exam. Are you a parent or a caregiver? Schedule an eye exam for your little one today. To find an eye doctor near you, visit prioritizeyoureyes. com/eyeexam. Healthy vision is fundamental to overall health and educational success. How To Bring New Life To Classic Holiday Traditions Bringing new life to classic holiday traditions starts with understanding the origins of how these traditions came to be.

OnePoll say the holiday spirit wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t have their traditional holiday dessert.

The Olesen family of O&H Danish Bakery knows how important it is to share such stories. The family-owned and operated bakery is offering fun facts and inspiration for celebrating classic Christmas traditions.

For many families, that dessert is Kringle. Approximately 43% of respondents in the same survey enjoy this treat – which is made of 36 layers of butter and pastry -- on Christmas Day.

And because some of these particular traditions are Danish, you’ll also be embracing “hygge.” Pronounced “hoo-ga,” this Nordic concept is all about creating a cozy atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life.

While Kringle is a traditional Danish delicacy, it’s actually savored worldwide. O&H Kringle has been shipped to more than 100 countries and has made landfall in all seven continents -- including Antarctica!

Something Sweet

“The holiday season is the most magical time of year for our family. It’s such a privilege to spread cheer and be a part of family traditions across the country.

Forty-four percent of people in a survey commissioned by O&H Danish Bakery and conducted by SWNS Media Group and

and others attributing its invention to pagan Europeans.

When it comes to traditions, the bakery remains steadfast in unveiling a new holiday flavor every December, its busiest season, making more than 7,000 Kringle every day.

Fun Food Traditions

This year’s “Christmas Fudge Kringle” is a riff on the traditional pastry. Featuring scratch-made premium dark chocolate filling, frosted in chocolate icing and garnished with Christmas nonpareils, it was inspired by O&H customers’ favorite holiday cake, “Ohhhh Fudge! Layer Cake,” the name of which comes from the movie, “A Christmas Story.” To place your Kringle order for the holidays, visit ohdanishbakery.com.

After dinner on Christmas Eve, they serve Risalamande, a Danish rice pudding dessert typically containing a whole almond. Serving as a fun Christmas-lottery, the one who finds the almond wins a small present.

However, the modern Christmas tree, much like we know it today, became a widespread practice throughout Europe beginning in the 16th century.

How Family History Can Impact Kidney Health This article is sponsored by Otsuka America Pharmaceutical Inc. While lifestyle factors such as physical activity and dietary habits play an integral role in a person’s overall health, family history is a critical component as well. Genetic disorders, or inherited conditions, are caused by an abnormality or mutation that’s passed down in the genes. While it does not always mean that a parent will pass a genetic condition to their children, it is important to know the potential to inherit a health issue in order to prepare to manage the condition accordingly. One genetic condition is Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a progressive kidney disease that leads to cyst formation and kidney growth that may eventually result in kidney failure and require either dialysis or kidney transplant. ADPKD is the most common inherited renal disease/kidney disorder and, according to data, affects as many as

they can maintain a healthy lifestyle and talk to their doctor about routine monitoring.

140,000 Americans. While ADPKD is considered a rare disease and is relatively unknown to most people, it is unfortunately all too common for families impacted by the condition. In fact, children of a parent with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease. Patients may remain asymptomatic for years while the disease progresses, which is why is it imperative to diagnose and monitor kidney size in people who have a genetic connection. It’s also important for people to know the symptoms and risk factors associated with ADPKD progression so

Detection

The Importance of Early

Like many other genetic conditions, early detection of ADPKD can be vital to a person’s disease management. Typically, ADPKD is diagnosed by an ultrasound of the kidneys; however, a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the kidneys may also be conducted. While less common, genetic testing for ADPKD is also available. As a result of advancements in medicine and imaging, for those diagnosed with ADPKD, physicians may be

able to identify ADPKD patients who are at risk for disease progression as well as estimate how likely they are to progress based on the size of their kidneys. In fact, research shows that even just one kidney scan can assess the rate of progression and predict the future decline of kidney function. Having an open dialogue with family members is also an important factor. For instance, those living with ADPKD can share their own diagnosis story, including any symptoms they may have experienced as well as effective lifestyle changes and management strategies. This open communication not only helps provide a closeknit support system for those living with ADPKD, but also allows for a larger network of information sharing that may be helpful for people as they work to manage their condition. Being educated on family medical history also allows patients to offer a more complete family history to their doctor and alert them about conditions to

monitor for during regular checkups. Additionally, it can also help empower patients to be proactive when it comes to seeing a specialist. Be an Informed Patient Regardless of what conditions may run in a person’s family, it’s always important to be an empowered patient. Patients should be sure to utilize educational resources to have informed conversations with healthcare providers. For instance, those with ADPKD can visit www. ADPKDQuestions.com which provides information for understanding this genetic disease and learning more about developing an effective management strategy, such as maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, as deemed appropriate by their care team, getting enough sleep, keeping all scheduled checkups and routine testing, and aiming to maintain a healthy weight.(StatePoint)

5 Ways To Protect Your Holiday Budget identity of your recipient a secret until you open gifts!

It may be the season of cheer, but for many, the holidays are rife with anxiety about expenses. A recent survey shows that staying on budget is Americans’ top concern this holiday season, followed by incurring long-term debt, shipping costs and being charged late or hidden fees. Here are five tips to protect your holiday budget: 1. Set a spending cap with friends and family. Americans plan to spend $998 on gifts this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. ‘Tis the season for giving, but make sure you don’t overspend. Know your budget up front and communicate that with loved ones. Another idea to limit spending is to put everyone’s name into a hat. Each person draws one name and buys a gift for just the person they selected. You can add a bit of intrigue by keeping the

2. Take advantage of deal days. Timing is everything for getting the best prices. Do your homework in advance to pay significantly less. Purchase gift cards with peace of mind. Gift cards are a popular, convenient gift, but some wouldbe buyers may hesitate to purchase them out of fear that the business may end up closing, especially those still struggling during the ongoing pandemic. Erie Insurance is taking away that concern with gift card reimbursement coverage, which is provided to certain eligible homeowners at no additional charge. The coverage provides reimbursement for up to $250 per gift card at local businesses within 100 miles of a customer’s home if the business permanently closes within a year after purchase. Reimbursement coverage is lim-

5 Ways To Keep Your Home Cozy All Winter Long According to the Energy Information Administration, heating bills for homes that use natural gas could be significantly higher

These heavy-duty strips also provide protection year-round by blocking dust, pollen and insects. 3. Swap Your Furnace Filter: Trapped dust and dirt in your furnace filter can cause low air flow and limit your furnace’s ability to properly function when you need it most.

this winter – perhaps by as much as 50%.

This can unnecessarily raise the temperature on your heat and cause energy bills to skyrocket.

Why? Based on recent weather trends, colder temperatures are expected, which not only boosts the energy your home needs to stay warm, but quickly raises the demand for those resources as well.

A simple filter change on your furnace and even air conditioning units as often as once a month can help maintain excellent air flow.

Weatherizing your house to ensure it stays comfortable during the long winter season is a great way to help control possible increased costs on your utility bills.

While many homeowners concentrate on preventing drafts by their front door; they often forget about the largest opening in their house – the garage.

Here are five easy ways to keep your home cozy all winter long.

Protect against snow, water and cool winter air from entering your garage with a Duck Brand Garage Bottom Seal.

1. Maximize Heating Options: Unpredictable weather can cause outages, so it’s best to prepare with alternative ways to heat your home. A log fireplace is wonderful, but for those without one, it may be best to invest in a gas heating alternative, like an individual heater or small generator. 2. Temperature Control: Bringing those utility bills down means keeping the warm air inside. Shifts in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, creating small cracks or leaks which need to be filled. Duck Brand Foam Weatherstrip Seals form the perfect barrier from drafts with selfadhesive foam strips to ensure utility bills remain low with minimum effort and maximum savings.

4. Create a Barrier in the Garage:

This heavy-duty, waterproof rubber seal won’t freeze or crack, and creates a tight, protective border all year long. 5. Cover Exterior Access Locations: Built-in pet doors and mail slots often go overlooked. Lower your energy bill by covering those spaces and opt for alternative options when taking out your pets and receiving mail. For more information, visit DuckBrand.com. Staying prepared for any shift in weather is always something homeowners should prioritize. With some quick tricks and the right products on hand, weatherizing your home doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. (StatePoint)

DBS uses a small medical device implanted in the body and connected to leads that stimulate a portion of the brain to control the motor functions affected by movement disorders, including tremors, slowness and rigidity. Until recently, physicians have had to rely on older DBS technology. However, the Boston Scientific Vercise Genus DBS System, approved for use in 2021, is designed to customize therapy to match each patient’s specific needs and allow for flexible stimulation therapy delivery as the disease progresses. This is important, because PD advances over time, and no two people experience progressions the same way. “Ultimately, with early enough in-

tervention, DBS is a tool that can help people with PD reduce tremors, increase mobility, and even reduce the amount of medication needed -- offering a reprieve from unpleasant side effects,” says Dr. Michele Tagliati, MD, director, Movement Disorders Program, Cedars Sinai (Los Angeles). “In particular, this therapy is designed with patient comfort and convenience in mind and gives physicians the ability to manage the ever-evolving needs of a patient as their Parkinson’s advances.” Hanley knew it was time to try DBS herself when her walking had slowed, she was stooped over, her back hurt relentlessly and she was experiencing significant tremor in her right hand and leg. After undergoing the procedure, she was amazed at how DBS had helped her. “When they turned on the device, I experienced an indescribable moment. My symptoms were suddenly reduced, and I felt more in control of my motion,” says Hanley. With DBS, Hanley was able to completely come off her PD medications and experienced increased mobility. While results vary for different patients, she’s now able to walk, cycle and swim regularly, and attend every horse race with ease. Today, Hanley is an advocate for DBS therapy and volunteers support to other patients, assisting during their appointments and even holding their hands during the DBS procedure. She’s also raised $3.5 million dollars through her fundraising efforts to support PD research at the University of Kentucky Hospital. What Every New Parent Needs To Know About RSV

While COVID-19 and influenza continue to make headlines, another contagious respiratory virus has been spreading at an alarming rate, one which can be severe and even life-threatening to infants and toddlers.

tions as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, RSV is spreading at an unusually high rate,” says Albert Rizzo, M.D., chief medical officer for the Lung Association. Recognizing RSV

• A barking or wheezing cough can be one of the first signs of a more serious illness.

• Infants with severe RSV will have short, shallow, rapid breathing. This can be identified by a “caving-

Indeed, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is so common that nearly 100% of children have been infected with the virus by age two.

They should seek emergency care if their child is having trouble breathing.

It’s also the leading cause of hospitalizations in all infants. While most people, including infants, develop only mild symptoms, for some, it can progress to severe complications. Despite these facts, many parents have never heard of RSV. This is why the American Lung Association with support from Sanofi Pasteur, is working to educate expectant mothers, parents and caregivers about RSV’s symptoms, when to contact a healthcare provider, and the steps they can take to protect themselves and their children. “Typically, peak season for RSV infection in the United States is fall through spring, however, a rise in cases in the summer of 2021 prompted a health advisory from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With people taking fewer precau-

Preventing Infection RSV is spread through close contact with someone who’s infected via coughing and sneezing, or from touching objects such as toys or doorknobs that have the virus on them.

Here are the symptoms of RSV, as well as how to recognize signs that may indicate a worsening illness: • Mild cold-like symptoms, including congestion, runny nose, fever, cough and sore throat. • Very young infants may be irritable, fatigued and have breathing difficulties.

“Those in contact with an infant or young child, especially if they were born prematurely, are very young, have chronic lung or heart disease, a weakened immune system,

or have neuromuscular disorders, should take extra care to keep them healthy by washing hands, covering coughs or sneezes and avoiding them when sick, if at all possible,” Dr. Rizzo adds. There’s no vaccine yet to prevent RSV, but scientists are working hard to develop one. However, everyone can help stop its spread in the following ways: • Avoiding close contact with infected people. • Avoiding sharing cups, bottles or toys that may be contaminated with the virus. • Washing hands with soap and water after coming into contact with an infected person. More information about RSV is available at Lung.org/RSV. For parents of little ones, being aware of RSV is critical during its peak season and beyond. (StatePoint)

International Student Enrollment In U.S. Universities Dropped During Pandemic; U.S. Still Top Choice For Indian Students (Continued From Page 01) for the 2020/2021 academic year, a 15 percent decline from the previous year. In addition, more than 200,000 international students pursued Optional Practical Training, gaining work experience in the U.S. after finishing their academic studies.

Students from China and India make up the bulk of international students in the U.S., which continues to remain the top choice for studies abroad.

The preliminary report did not break down the number of students by country of origin.

International students represent 5 percent of all students in U.S. higher education and, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, contributed $39 billion to the U.S. economy in 2020.

Do You Have Undiagnosed Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that leads to serious life-threatening complications, however many people go undiagnosed and are undertreated -- a situation being further exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and a good opportunity to better understand risk factors, symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis and action.

More than 34 million people in the United States are affected by diabetes, and one-in-five of them are undiagnosed, according to estimates from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health services organization Cigna reports that between January 2020 and June of 2021, nearly 800 of its patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were found to have undiagnosed diabetes. Only 14% of

So why are so many people living with diabetes going undiagnosed? Cigna claims data shows that those at higher risk of having social or economic obstacles to health, also

can compound problems. “As is the case with many medical conditions, timely diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is impacted

by persisting health inequities that affect certain communities and populations,” says Dr. Mandeep Brar, Cigna medical director and board certified endocrinologist. “Factors such as race, ethnicity, access to healthful food, education, health care coverage and language barriers, to name a few, all contribute to undiagnosed cases of diabetes.”

However, according to Dr. Brar, early diagnosis is critical for everyone: “When diabetes is left untreated, it will progress, causing complications such as neuropathy, kidney disease, diabetic ulcers and wounds, amputations and other serious and life-threatening issues. If you’re living with diabetes, the sooner you’re aware of that, the more quickly you can learn to manage your condition and prevent it

Sharp dishwashers are designed to offer high-end features at an excellent value,” says Peter Weedfald, senior vice president of Sales & Marketing, Sharp Home Electronics Company of America. So, how do you know when it’s time for an upgrade in your kitchen? Weedfald shares five questions to ask yourself: 1. What’s my dishwasher’s cleaning and drying power? While earlier dishwashers often required you to do quite a bit of soaking and rinsing before loading the machine, some of today’s models feature soil sensors that automatically optimize your washing cycles. Plus, the option to place your most challenging and soiled cookware

new models have also made handdrying a thing of the past, thanks to heated drying, which is faster and more dependable than condensation drying. 2. Does my dishwasher offer premium features and design at a reasonable price point? Sharp is a good example of a manufacturer offering

3. Does my dishwasher offer flexibility? For an efficiently run kitchen, flexibility is key. To that end, you shouldn’t have to wait until you have a full load’s worth of dishes to run your machine. Look for a dishwasher with a half-

load option, as well as adjustable racks to accommodate large casserole dishes, tall stemware, and oddly sized items. 4. Is my dishwasher energy efficient? If either sustainability or saving money on utilities are priorities for you, be sure to look for ENERGY STAR rated dishwashers with features such as a halfload option that reduces water and energy consumption when washing smaller loads. 5. Is my dishwasher quiet? To put things in perspective, any dishwasher is going to produce some level of noise. Anything below 52 dBA is considered very quiet. The difference between a 40dBA and 45dBA model will be minimal, so be careful you are not overpaying for this feature. For more information and resources, visit shop.sharpusa.com. from advancing.”

According to Cigna, here are three steps everyone can take today: 1. Understand signs and symptoms. Sharing any new symptoms with your primary care provider can be crucial in early detection and proper, timely treatment. Symptoms can include frequent urination, excessive thirst or hunger, unexpected weight loss, cuts or bruises that are slow to heal, frequent infections, very dry skin, extreme fatigue, and blurry vision, according to Dr. Brar. 2. Get screened. Schedule an annual preventive check-up or diabetes screening. Regardless of symptoms, one of the most powerful ways to detect diabetes is to be screened for this disease with a simple blood test by your primary care provider. If diagnosed with prediabetes, there are a number of lifestyle changes you can make to reverse prediabetes and prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems. These changes include eating healthfully, increasing physical activity, losing weight and managing stress. 3. Assess risk factors. Some people are more likely to develop diabetes than others. In addition to being 45 years or older, risk factors include being overweight, having a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes and being physically active fewer than three times a week. Additionally, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at higher risk than white people for developing Type 2 diabetes. If you have any of these risk factors, request a screening test with your primary care provider, regardless of your age. For a quick, online Type 2 diabetes risk test, visit diabetes.org/risk-test. This Diabetes Awareness Month, get savvy about the disease. Understanding symptoms and risk factors can mean early detection and better outcomes. (StatePoint)

Survey Shows More Americans Are Considering Electric Vehicles

Americans are increasingly looking to electrify their daily on-road travel, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by Engine’s CARAVAN on behalf of MINI USA, finds that half of all consumers nationwide expect the American automotive market to be mostly electric within 15 years. What’s more, 80% said they would also consider an electric vehicle (EV) as their primary or secondary vehicle. Those behind the survey say this is a clear sign of progress in the adoption of EVs. “More consumers are shifting their attention to electric vehicles as they become more attainable and compelling to own relative to gaspowered cars,” says Mike Peyton, chief motorer and vice president, MINI of the Americas. “EVs are becoming especially attractive to a new generation -- ’Gen EV’ as we say. These are people who are

50 miles per day on average. With most of today’s electric cars offering a range over 100 miles, EVs are compatible with the driving patterns of a majority of American drivers.

Americans also see EVs as increasingly attainable. Close to half (47%) of all those surveyed believe they have become more affordable and attainable in the last two years. This is also reflected in the 32% of respondents who claimed they’d consider purchasing an electric car within the next five years. Younger consumers hold an especially positive attitude toward EVs, with gen Z and millennial consumers indicating they’re more likely to consider purchasing an EV in five years at 39% and 41%, respectively. They’re also twice as likely to believe that electric cars are fun to drive compared to older generations. Regional differences were also clear in the survey results. Those in western states feel more optimistic about electric overtaking gas-powered vehicles in 15 years, and are also more likely to be reading up on EV.

If you do decide to make the shift, look for a model that’s not only fun to drive, but offers some return on your investment, such as the award-winning MINI Cooper SE, which features a low center of gravity, powerful electric powertrain, dynamic handling and 114mile range. Taking into account the suggested retail price of $29,900, federal EV credits of $7,500 and additional state incentives, the cost can be as low $20,000. Owners may also realize additional savings of up to $1,200 over the course of a year based on driving habits and U.S. national average energy costs. Whether you’re ready to drive an electric vehicle off the lot today or you’re still researching the decision, one thing is clear, EV is making waves on American roadways thanks to innovations that have made them more affordable and fun to drive. Struggling To Pay Rent? What You Can Do To Stay In Your Home Millions of Americans who have faced income loss and illness as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are struggling to meet basic expenses, including rent. Recent statistics show that more than 15 million people nationwide live in households that are behind on their rental payments. As federal rental protection ends, these individuals and families are at risk of eviction, according to the Aspen Institute.

Those unable to pay rent or utilities may be able to access rental assistance through the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program. To find as-

sel to fight eviction. To find links to trusted legal assistance in your area, visit americanbar.org and search for “free legal help.”

Help for Renters As part of its efforts to help people stay in their homes, Wells Fargo is supporting initiatives nationwide that mitigate evictions.

“The economic fallout from the pandemic is causing housing instability for far too many renters, including people of color disproportionately affected by this crisis,” says Eileen Fitzgerald, head of housing affordability philanthropy with Wells Fargo. Struggling to pay rent? Fitzgerald offers four actions to take: 1. Talk to your landlord. If you can’t pay rent on time, see if your landlord can work out a payment plan, accept a partial payment or push the due date back a few days. 2. Seek emergency assistance.

4. Contact a housing counselor. Housing counselors don’t just work with homeowners. They can help renters in need of assistance, too. During the pandemic, housing counselors have helped renters access emergency rental assistance, understand options for rental relief and eviction protection, as well as

Earlier in 2021, Wells Fargo gave a $4 million grant to The National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Housing Partnership Network to launch the Renter Advantage program. Renter Advantage enables credit counselors and nonprofit rental property owners to work directly with renters to preserve their housing status and stabilize their financial situation. Through the program, credit counselors provide renters in need of assistance with trusted guidance, including enrolling them in plans to address sustainable rent repayment, debt management and improving long-term financial health. Legal representation can make all

the difference. A Harvard study shows that two-thirds of tenants with legal representation are more likely to avoid an eviction judgment and remain in their home. Harvard researchers also found an estimated 90% of landlords have legal representation, while only 10% of tenants do, putting tenants at a significant disadvantage. This is why Wells Fargo has provided more than $8 million in grants to legal assistance organizations helping keep people housed. People of color, particularly Black and Hispanic tenants, represent 80% of people at risk of eviction, according to the Aspen Institute. Wells Fargo grants are helping close the housing equity gap. “As the pandemic continues to take its toll on Americans’ physical and economic health, connecting people at risk of eviction with resources and options is critical,” says Fitzgerald. “Having a safe, affordable place to call home helps lay the foundation for wellness, dignity, and economic opportunity.” (StatePoint)

Nonmotor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, as a whole, can be more troublesome than motor symptoms, in terms of quality of life. The stigma around these symptoms may also create challenges. Different types of glass are also something to keep in mind, with some glass being better suited for certain climates and conditions. Understanding terms like dual pane windows, low emissivity (Low-E) coating, decorative and hurricaneresistant can also help you make the right choices. With so many options, it’s often a good idea to seek the advice of a certified contractor. They can help capture your vision and will work with you to find the right products for your home.

High-Performance Products High-performance windows and doors have better energy efficiency, which can help save you money in the long run, make your home healthier and keep it better protected in stormy weather. Energy-efficient windows help reduce drafts and the transfer of heat, which can mean lower energy bills. ENERGY STAR certified windows and patio doors from Andersen are a good example of this. They’re also durable and reduce expenses associated with maintenance and painting. Be sure to also seek out products that have “zero-VOC” or “lowVOC” certification. For example, most Andersen products are Indoor Advantage Gold certified for lowVOC emissions. This helps reduce your household’s exposure to volatile organic compounds, which are gases that can lead to eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and dizziness, and can even cause organ damage over time, according to the EPA.

An Experienced Installer

Better quality windows and doors make it less likely that you’ll need to repair or replace them. One way to identify quality is to stick with brands that continually test the durability and strength of all the components of their products. You can also look into products that use new, low-maintenance materials like Fibrex material, a composite that’s stronger than vinyl and

And if you’re looking to put a patio door in a tight space,

A window is only as good as its installation. In fact, many windows fail due to improper installation. Help protect the investment you’ve made in your home by hiring a certified contractor or full-service replacement company like Renewal by Andersen. Certified contractors are a safe bet to make sure your windows and doors are installed properly, and Andersen products installed by Andersen Certified Contractors come with a 2-year limited installation warranty. Keeping all these points in mind will help you select windows and patio doors that best fit your home, and can save you money in the long run. (StatePoint)

actively tell their physicians about these symptoms. That’s why I believe it’s so important to share experiences across languages and cultures,” said Dr. Gus Alva, assistant professor at University of California, Riverside Medical School, Department of Neuroscience. The storytelling campaign is in collaboration with StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.” Sponsored by Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc., “Yours, Truly” invites people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners to record interviews about their lives and preserve their story in StoryCorps’ national archive. Signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can vary, with people experiencing both motor symptoms (such as slowness of movement, resting tremors, limb stiffness and trouble with balance) and nonmotor symptoms (such as constipation, impaired bladder control, anxiety and depression, loss of mental sharpness/acuity, hallucinations and delusions). When people living with Parkinson’s disease experience hallucinations and/or delusions related to their condition, it is known as Parkinson’s disease psychosis. A hallucination is a perceptionlike experience that occurs without an external stimulus and is seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled. A delusion is a false, fixed belief despite evidence to the contrary. To share or view a story, access educational resources in English or Spanish, or to find out where you can visit the StoryCorps airstream, visit www.YoursTrulyPDP.com. Already, several Parkinson’s families have shared their stories and added their voices to StoryCorps’ national archive. (StatePoint)

Right now, one in four women go back to work just two weeks after giving birth because they can’t afford to take any additional unpaid time off to recover from childbirth and care for their infant. “The early weeks of a baby’s life are critical for families. Why Sharpening Your Knives Can Make You A More Proficient Cook

If you’ve ever desired to become a better home chef, you’ve probably spent time reading cookbooks, watching cooking shows or even taking a culinary skills course. The truth is that when it comes to improving your cooking and becoming more efficient in the kitchen, you may be overlooking a much simpler step: sharpening your knives.

suming prospect and doing it properly is an acquired skill in and of itself. This is where new innovations can save you time and effort, and deliver better results. For example, Resharp, a knifesharpening kiosk found in ACE Hardware stores, offers a new, patented, automated system that scans each knife’s profile and then restores a factory, burr-free edge to the knife in 90 seconds or less.

Before your holiday guests arrive and you find yourself in the kitchen churning out big seasonal feasts, consider the following: Why it Matters Dull knives can damage and bruise ingredients, slow your slicing and dicing down considerably, and ironically, be more likely to cause you injury. (Whereas a sharp knife

will easily slice into foods, a dull knife works less efficiently, making you more likely to apply pressure and lose control of the handle.) What’s more, uneven chopping can lend itself to uneven cooking.

So what’s the best method for maintaining knives? Many home chefs use a whetstone to sharpen knives periodically, as well as a honing steel on a more regular basis.

What You Didn’t Know About The Beatles’ Final Days Together Whether you’re a Beatlemaniac or a more casual fan, you likely have an opinion about the band’s final days together and their eventual breakup. However, a brand-new book may challenge everything you thought you knew about the band’s twilight hour. Already a New York Times bestseller, “The Beatles: Get Back” from Callaway Arts & Entertainment and Apple Corps Ltd., is the first official standalone book to be released by The Beatles in over 20 years.

to the truth.

Over 21 days, first at Twickenham Film Studios and then at their own Apple Studios, with cameras and tape recorders documenting every day’s work, the band rehearsed a huge number of songs in preparation for what proved to be their final concert, which famously took place on the rooftop of their own Apple Corps office building and brought central London to a halt.

For this reason, “The Beatles: Get Back” is an essential complement to both director Peter Jackson’s documentary film series of the same name (airing on Disney+ in three parts between Nov. 25 and Nov. 27) and the 50th anniversary special edition worldwide release of “Let it Be,” which has been newly-remixed, and features expanded and never released session recordings.

These sessions, which generated the “Let It Be” album and 1970 film, represent the only time in The Beatles’ career that they were filmed at such length while in the studio creating music.

Presenting transcribed conversations drawn from over 120 recorded hours of the band’s studio sessions, along with hundreds of previously unpublished images, including photos by Ethan A. Russell and Linda McCartney, this exclusive, in-their-own-words account of the “Let it Be” recording sessions paints a new portrait of their final days together. “Legend has it that these sessions were a grim time for a band falling apart, but it becomes clear from the fuller transcripts that John,

struct Peace Pagodas in 1947, in many locations around the world as a symbol of world peace. NipponzanMyohoji and locals of Pokhara built Shanti Stupa. Morioka Sonin, Dharmashilla Guruma (nun) and Min Bahadur Gurung were the key people in constructing the pagoda.

Shanti Stupa in Pokhara was built by Nipponzan-Myohoji monk Morioka Sonin with local supporters under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii, a Buddhist monk and the founder of Nipponzan-Myohoji. Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning peace, also widely used in the Nepali and Hindi languages, and Shanti Stupa means Peace Pagoda. Shanti Stupa shrine was built as a symbol of peace. Situated at the height of 1100 meters on the Anadu Hill, Nichidatsu Fujii laid the foundation stone along with relics of the Buddha on 12 September 1973. Nepal has two of the eighty peace pagodas in the world: Shanti Stupa in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha and Shanti Stupa in Pokhara. Shanti Stupa in Pokhara has also become a tourist

Courtiers were worried and started talking among themselves about the test. Akbar ordered everyone to assemble in his court. Akbar unfastened his waist cloth (Cloak) and laid on the floor. Everyone wondered what the emperor was upto.

Just then Birbal entered. He was surprised to see emperor in this condition. He sat in a corner and observed everything.

Birbal grabbed the cloak and examined emperor’s position- who was lying on the floor. “Jahanpannah, would you kindly draw up your knees?” he said. The emperor followed Birbal’s orders and drew up his knees. Birbal then threw the cloak over him and it covered him from head to toe. Everyone in the court including courtiers, realizing that they had failed the test, quietly fled out of the room. Witty Birbal had once again outsmarted Akbar’s courtiers. Akbar was impressed with Birbal’s reply and praised him.

and local supporters allowed constant construction to continue. Nichidatsu Fujii had prophesied that one day the Shanti Stupa would be rebuilt. On 21 May 1992, after an eighteenyear uphill battle, the Honorable Girija Prasad Koirala came to the Anadu Hill and re-laid the foundation stone. Construction was completed without obstruction and the inaugural ceremony was conducted in the presence of the Chairman of the Nepali Congress Party and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on 30 October 1999. Shanti Stupa in Pokhara is the first World Peace Pagoda in Nepal and seventy-first pagoda built by Nipponzan-Myohoji in the world. The pagoda is 115 feet tall and 344 feet in diameter. The white pagoda has two tiers for tourists and religious visitors to circumambulate. The second tier displays four statues of the Buddha presented as a souvenirs from different countries: ‘Dharmacakra Mudra’ from Japan, ‘Bodh Gaya’ from Sri Lanka, ‘Kushinagar’ from Thailand and ‘Lumbini’ from Nepal. Each statue represents important events related to the Buddha and were named according to where they took place. Dharmachakra is placed below the gajur (pinnacle) which signifies the wheel of life, dharma and the teachings of the Buddha. The top of the golden gajur holds the crystal stone from Sri Lanka which symbolizes intellect and grace. Dhamma hall, with the Buddha statue, is located near the peace pagoda where Buddhist rituals take place daily and large pujas are performed on important dates according to the Lunar calendar, such as on full moon day.

Not only does fall hiking offer unparalleled views and breathtaking experiences, it is a great way to relieve stress and even a better way to stay fit.

Keen boots also offer waterproof protection and all-terrain traction, for a firm grip on a variety of trail surfaces. This is an ideal boot for those hiking for the first time.

Whether it’s a hike in the woods, a walk along the shore of your favorite beach or even just a stroll in your neighborhood park, it’s important to be prepared. Having the right footwear, apparel and gear will help ensure that you can focus on the beautiful surroundings, and better enjoy the time spent with the friends and family who accompany you. To prepare, consider the following tips: 1. Check a fall color guide. While you can be sure of vibrant fall foliage and leaf-peeping opportunities in many areas of the country, it’s

New footwear technologies are making this possible. The Keen Footwear Ridge Flex Collection, for example, has KEEN.Bellows Flex technology, enabling the boot to bend and flex where it’s needed most, making every step up to three times easier.

Factoring in a range of scientific data, like historical temperatures and forecast precipitation, these tools can help you catch colors at their peak. 2. Pick a trail that is right for you. Make sure you look at the altitude, terrain and difficulty of the trail be-

exact information. You can also check with your local parks department. 3. Have proper footwear: What if you could feel comfort right out of the box with your footwear with no break-in required?

4. Be prepared for changes in temperature. Weather conditions can change substantially during the course of your adventure, particularly if your hike involves elevation. Be sure to layer wisely, starting with a moisture-wicking base layer. Check the weather in advance and be sure to pack gloves and a hat if you expect temperatures to dip below freezing. 5. Be prepared for shorter daylight

hours. Know the local sunset time. If you are new to hiking, plan your hike during the day. However, you should be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Hiking after dark requires more clothing, as it is likely to be colder. Having a headlamp in your backpack can be a lifesaver, along with a fully-charged cell phone and a portable GPS. 6. Stay hydrated. The weather has cooled, but hydration is just as important. Pack more than enough water for your hike -- and snacks. You’re burning calories and need to stay properly fueled. With the right gear, preparation and knowledge, you can enjoy a full season of safer, more enjoyable fall hiking. (StatePoint)

COVID-19 Vaccine Myths Busted

COVID-19 vaccines are overwhelmingly safe and highly effective at reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalizations and death. Unfortunately, misinformation and pervasive myths continue to sow doubt, leaving many unprotected. Roughly 99% of deaths linked to COVID-19 in the latest wave -- and the vast majority of cases involving severe symptoms that require hospitalization -- were among patients who weren’t fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “With high levels of community spread of COVID-19, we’re once again fighting a two-front war: against the virus and against rampant misinformation,” says American Medical Association president, Gerald E. Harmon, M.D. Here are some of the top myths physicians are hearing and what you need to know: --Can COVID-19 vaccines impact fertility? Risks to fertility or the ability to become pregnant after

receiving a COVID-19 vaccine were disproven through clinical trials and real-world data points. While pregnant women weren’t specifically targeted for vaccine trials, several participants became pregnant without issue during the trial duration and there’s been no demonstrated real-world impact

on fertility. Moreover, COVID-19 itself carries significant risks for pregnant women, including higher risks of preterm labor and stillbirth, and higher risks of hypertension and pneumonia for pregnant women. There’s also no evidence showing that COVID-19 vaccines affect

male fertility. --Can vaccinated people “shed” spike proteins, affecting those close to them? Vaccine shedding can only occur when a vaccine contains a weakened version of the virus. None of the COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States contain a live virus, so it’s not biologically possible for a vaccinated person to affect an unvaccinated person by proxy or by “shedding” spike proteins. --I’ve already had COVID-19. Do I need the vaccine? Yes, the data shows that unvaccinated individuals are more than twice as likely to be reinfected with COVID-19 than those who were fully vaccinated after initially contracting the virus. Getting the vaccine is the best

way to protect yourself and those around you. --Why do I need the vaccine if breakthrough infections are possible? Some fully vaccinated people will still get sick because no vaccine is 100% effective. However, data show that vaccination may make COVID-19 symptoms less severe. The vaccines have also been shown to provide substantial protection against death and hospitalization in cases of breakthrough infection. --I’m young and healthy. Do I really need the vaccine? Many young, previously healthy people have gotten seriously ill or died from COVID-19, and those numbers are increasing with new, more transmissible variants. There’s no way to predict how you’ll respond to infection. Additionally, vaccines help prevent you from carrying the virus and transmitting it to others. Reducing the number of unvaccinated people will mitigate transmission of the virus. --I have al-

lergies. Should I be worried about a reaction to the vaccine? There have been very rare (2.5-5 people per million) reports of severe (anaphylactic) allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. Having severe allergic reactions to certain foods, bee stings or oral medications doesn’t mean you will have an allergic reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccination sites are prepared to evaluate and handle these situations on individual bases. More fact-based vaccine information can be found by visiting cdc. gov or getvaccineanswers.org. “The evidence around vaccinations is abundantly clear; they’re safe, effective and will help protect you and your loved ones from severe COVID and death,” says Dr. Harmon. “If you have questions about the vaccine, its safety, or effectiveness, please speak to your physician. We are here for you, eager to answer your questions, and get you protected from this virus.” (StatePoint)

5 Tips To Prevent Common Holiday Foot Problems The holiday season is one of the most joyful times of year, but it can also lead to aching feet. One source of seasonal foot pain is gout, a type of arthritis exacerbated by consuming too much of certain holiday foods and beverages.

it’s the coolest part of the body and uric acid is sensitive to temperature changes, but this may also occur in other parts of the foot and ankle.”

As you celebrate, prevent gout flare-ups and other painful afflictions with these five tips for healthy holiday feet from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

3. Be pedicure-safety conscious. Heading out for your holiday pedicure? Nail salons can be a breeding ground for bacteria, including MRSA, a type of staph infection that causes fever and painful red bumps, and can be life-threatening if left untreated. Reduce your risk of infection. Choose a salon that follows proper sanitation practices and is licensed by the state. You may also want to consider bringing your own pedicure instruments for safety.

1. Don’t overindulge in holiday cheer. Your feet can sometimes feel the effects of too much holiday cheer. Foods and beverages high in purines, such as shellfish, red meat, red wine and beer, can trigger extremely painful gout attacks, a condition when uric acid builds up and crystallizes in and around your joints. According to foot and ankle surgeon and Associate Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Josh Sebag, DPM, AACFAS, “Often, it’s the big toe that’s affected first since

4. Watch for ice and snow. Though winter wonderlands are beautiful, they can also be dangerous. Use caution outdoors, watching for ice or snow patches. The ankle joint can be more vulnerable to serious injury from falling on ice. “Ice accelerates the fall and often causes more severe trauma because the foot can move in any direction after slipping,” Dr. Sebag explains. If you fall, take a break from activities until you can be seen by a foot and ankle surgeon. Use RICE therapy (Rest, Ice, Compression,

If you do experience pain in your big toe or other parts of your foot or ankle, drink appropriate fluids, elevate your foot and immobilize it. Frequently, non-aspirin equivalents of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are used to treat gout. In severe cases, contact your foot and ankle surgeon.

2. If the shoe fits, wear it. When hitting the dance floor or shopping malls, don’t compromise comfort and safety when picking shoes.

Narrow or overly high-heeled shoes or shoes that aren’t worn often, such as dress shoes, can irritate feet, leading to blisters, calluses, swelling and even severe ankle injuries. “Choose low-heeled shoes that fit your foot in length, width and depth while you’re standing,” says Dr. Sebag

and Elevation) to reduce pain and control swelling around the injury. 5. Listen to your feet. Don’t let foot pain ruin holiday fun; inspect your feet regularly for evidence of injury, ingrown toenails, bruising, swelling, blisters, dry skin or calluses. “If you experience foot pain (while at rest or with activity), swelling or notice signs of problems, make an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon,” Dr. Sebag says. “Often, especially for people living with diabetes, and those with altered foot sensation, what may seem like a simple issue can turn into a larger problem if medical care is delayed.” For more resources or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.Treat your feet right. Being proactive, protective and preventive can mean a healthier holiday season for your feet -- and your whole body. (StatePoint)

his statement. T e x a s happens to have the second-largest Indian American population in the c o u n t r y, according to a recent report by the Dallas Morning News.

The Texas governor shared his understanding of Diwali and commended Indian Americans for their many contributions to the Lone Star State. The Lone Star State’s top executive also boasted he was the first governor to host an official, state-sponsored Diwali event – a sign of the growing influence of Indian Americans in Texas. Indian CEO Council, co-founded by Arun Agarwal and Sanjiv Yajnik of Dallas, organized and coordinated the Diwali dinner and fundraiser at the Governor’s Mansion. “This governor truly realizes the many contributions Indian Americans have made to the Texas economy,” Agarwal stated. Agarwal personally escorted Abbott and his wife, Cecilia, on a trip to India a few years ago.

“After their time in India, both the governor and the First Lady have an appreciation for Indian culture and our various religious holidays and traditions,” Agarwal continued in

The news report, which was published on Oct. 28, 2020, stated there were 452,598 Indian Americans in Texas, second only to the 815,948 Indian Americans in California.

The Lone Star State was also home to the famous “Howdy Modi” event, where thenPresident Donald J. Trump hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of 50,000 people at a football stadium in Houston. Metro Houston is home to about 88,000 Indian Americans, according to U.S. Census Bureau data between 2014 and 2018. That’s the eighth highest concentration of Indian Americans, nationwide. Dallas-Fort Worth has about 112,000 Indian Americans, good for the fifth largest concentration in the nation. Abbott, who wore Indian clothes at the Oct. 30 fundraiser event, could be looking to capture that audience should he pursue a third term as governor. Hosting the Diwali dinner and fundraiser at the governor’s mansion is certainly the first step in that direction.
