Her mission is to be a role model and to promote entrepreneurship amongst women by sharing the best practices of the United States and to support women who establish and run their own businesses internationally. The House of Tutors has always served international students who took English classes there and received student services.
Al-Hambra developed a special commitment to empower women and promote their full inclusion in the workforce.
This gave Anjum the opportunity to gain cultural and diplomatic expertise. Over time her global network of contacts grew, and she was called to expand professionally beyond the family business.
The Austin South Asian asked Anjum Malik why mentoring women is important in this day and age. She replied, “The sharing of knowledge is a natural part of relationships and mentoring builds on this very human inclination in a structured way.
In 2009 she co-founded the Al-Hambra Chamber of Commerce and became its Managing Partner. Their mission was defined in response to build understanding and mutual respect between people of different nations through education and business collaboration.
Education and mentoring are natural partners.” She added, “Mentoring provides an essential link between a person’s qualification, their preparedness and that critical next step professionally.” Anjum is of the view that in areas where women are working professionally for the first time or moving up, mentoring is critical to help them feel included and make them participate fully.
The December issue of Emirates Business News has Anjum Malik on the cover. Sunaina Rana, in her article, ‘Educating Women to Succeed” talks about the role of mentoring that Anjum has provided to the community around her and made a difference. New SAT Debuts in March, Free Practice from Khan Academy Since a new revamped version of the SAT college entrance exam will debut in March, the College Board has teamed up with online educator Khan Academy to offer SAT practice with the new exam for
free to all students through diagnostic quizzes and interactive practice tests.
writing and math, with an emphasis on analysis.
Looking ahead to March, the College Board says the revamped exam is more representative of what students study in high school and the skills they need to succeed in college and afterward.
Some of the obscure vocabulary words that left kids memorizing flash cards for endless hours will vanish. Instead, more widely known words used in classroom learning will appear on the test and students will have to demonstrate their ability to determine meaning in different contexts.
The test had last been revised in 2005. The new makeover focuses less on arcane vocabulary words like “lachrymose’’ and more on real-world learning and analysis by students. There also is no longer a penalty for guessing on the redesigned exam, and the essay will be optional. Students who decide not to write an essay would see about 50 minutes shaved off the length of the test. The new SAT will continue to test reading,
Other significant changes include: in math, students will see more algebra and problem solving, instead of testing a wide range of math concepts; use of calculators will be limited and will be allowed only on certain math questions, instead of on the entire math portion; the essay portion will be optional; top score goes back to 1600, with a separate score for the essay. The tests are available at https://www. khanacademy.org/sat.(Courtesy: Indiawest)
India Among Top Five Most Promising Markets Globally India has emerged as one of the five most promising markets for businesses globally as it offers one of the best opportunities for both domestic as well as global companies, says a survey.
According to the annual global CEO survey of consultancy giant PwC released here at the WEF Annual Meeting, the top five markets considered as most important for overall growth prospects by the respondents are the U.S., China, Germany, the UK and India. “India, which has continued to do well under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pro-business government, is now among CEOs’ five most promising overseas markets,” said the survey, which covered 1,409 CEOs spread
across 83 countries. It further noted that the confidence level among Indian CEOs remains higher than the global average although they have also become less confident since last year about the growth prospects of their own companies. As per the findings, CEOs are less optimistic about prospects this year and those who think global growth would improve over the next 12 months have declined to 27 percent from 37 percent seen in 2015. Further, those who think the situation would worsen have increased to 23 percent from 17 percent. “Against this tide of pessimism, CEOs in India (64 percent), Spain (54 percent) and Romania (50 percent) stand out as more optimistic,” it said. PwC India Chairman Deepak Kapoor said
CEOs in India have given strong indication of general uplift in sentiments by showing much more confidence than their global counterparts when it comes to revenue growth for their companies. “Recent policy reforms and a consequent pick up in investment and the government’s aim to boost infrastructure are also playing a role in boosting CEO confidence,” he noted. However, Kapoor said the CEO community continues to be concerned by a lack of infrastructure and over-regulation. As many as 90 percent of the Indian CEOs cited inadequate basic infrastructure as a major threat and 80 percent mentioned exchange rate volatility and 77 percent cited over-regulation. “Of business threats, 81 percent stated availability of key skills, 79 percent stated speed of technological change, 78 percent stated bribery and corruption,” the survey said. “With India as the fastest growing large economy in the world, it offers one of the best opportunities for both Indian and global companies in a world that is still coming to terms with a slower growth paradigm and increasing geopolitical uncertainty,” he added. With global headwinds hitting emerging markets as well, Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Jan. 20 said volatility has
become a global norm, but India can certainly grow at 8-9 percent in a friendlier global climate. The view was echoed by business leaders from India and other countries here at the WEF Annual Meeting even as they felt that not “all perfect storms” in the world today would hit the Indian economy. Admitting that exports have shrunk, currencies and stock markets are impacted, Jaitley said at a panel discussion here on the India growth story that the government is always trying to prepare itself to meet such challenges. “The fact is we are (the) fastest growing economy, but we can do much better. Given a better climate and global situation, we can do much better. In a friendly global environment, we can do it (8-9 percent). “We had two bad monsoons while domestic and global issues impacted several sectors and that in turn has impacted banks. We are growing at 7-7.5 percent. In a more favorable environment, getting an extra 1-1.5 percent is not difficult,” he said. The Minister said “oil prices have helped us replan the government expenditure. One of the biggest reforms that have happened today is rationalization of subsidies.” (Courtesy: Indiawest)

Tips To Be More Productive
Juggling work, family, friends and everything in between is no easy feat. But there are many ways to increase your productivity without working harder or getting more stressed. Small business owners are true experts in this art, establishing routines and habits to be more efficient with time, money and resources. Here are some top tips recently shared by several small business owners and bloggers as part of
the #MakeMoreHappen campaign from Staples, that can help you become more productive at home and work. Get Tech Savvy Be willing to outsource certain tasks, like technical troubleshooting. If you’re not an IT specialist, solving such problems can be time consuming and headache-inducing. “Even small technical problems can take hours of frustration to fix, and most people don’t think about these issues until they have them, especially when it’s too late,” says Cassie Boorn of Maker Mentors and blogger at Design Aglow. “A smart solution is to set up a monthly subscription with a technical support hotline like Staples, so you can have instant access to help any time you need it.” DIY Whether you’re dealing with professional or personal affairs, doing-it-yourself can often save money and time -- from fixing things at home to creating the design elements of a business. “I create and design my own cards and then print them myself. I create a different card for
each platform I’m selling on -- the basic design is the same, but the name of the platform is at the top and I use a different color pallet to distinguish each one,” says Michelle Gallagher, the Etsy consultant behind My Craft Assistant. Simplify Shopping One-stop shopping sprees at large retailers like Staples can help save time and money. These stores often offer lower prices on products, and shopping for many items at once online can help qualify you for free shipping. Also, these types of retailers tend to feature their own store brand products for further savings. “Obviously, rationing pencils is not going to singlehandedly bring your business out of debt, but you’d be surprised at how quickly seemingly minor expenses can accumulate,” says Nicole Thein of Uniquely Women. While Thein’s advice focuses on business tools, the same rationale applies to household supplies and personal items. Making savvy consumer purchases can help you stretch your dollar. Use Life-Saving Apps These days, there are apps for everything. So before hitting the panic button, see if there’s an app that can solve your problem quickly and on a budget. For example, designer and blogger Whitney English, founder of the planner Day Designer recommends Makr for those who need a logo fast. “It might be something you need for a wedding, like a custom crest or a monogram or you might need an actual logo for your business,” says English. “Enter the Makr app. It’s the solution to all of those things, and then some.” Everyone can use more time, energy and money. Finding ways to stretch these precious resources can make you happier, healthier and more productive. (Courtesy: Statepoint)

What You Need To Know About Winter Driving Winter can be an especially perilous time to be on the roads. Snow, ice, fog and longer nights present challenges to drivers that can lead to crashes. People do less driving in winter, yet we have more crashes per mile driven. Some
• Bridges and overpasses freeze before roadways, so be alert in cold weather when approaching a bridge. While a careful and skillful driver is always a vehicle’s best safety feature, many safety technologies can help prevent or reduce the severity of winter-related crashes. They include:
10,780 people were killed in car crashes between December and March in 2013 -- fully one-third of the total for each year. Non-fatal collisions also occur with greater frequency in winter months. You may be an ace behind the wheel when the sun is shining and roads are dry, but driving in winter weather can be a different story. Drivers need to recalibrate and adjust their driving for winter road conditions. “Travel can be treacherous when roadway surfaces are compromised during winter storms,” says Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council (NSC). “The good news is that in-vehicle technologies can help drivers by providing advance warnings and preventing loss of control.” NSC and the University of Iowa recently partnered to launch a campaign called MyCarDoesWhat, to educate drivers about vehicle safety technologies designed to prevent crashes. The MyCarDoesWhat campaign offers three major pieces of advice for driving in wintry conditions: • Slow down. This is the golden rule of winter driving. Drivers frequently underestimate how long it takes to brake and how difficult it can be to steer on slippery roads. • Do not use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces. It will diminish your control over the car and reduce your reaction time in the event of a skid.
• Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help drivers maintain control by preventing wheels from locking up. Your ABS works differentlythan traditional brakes, and requires you to drive differently too. It delivers and releases precise braking pressure to each wheel as needed, so you shouldn’t pump the brakes when you have ABS. Just hold them down firmly and look and steer in the direction you want to go. They may buzz and vibrate when the ABS has activated. • Traction control helps you accelerate without spinning out on slippery surfaces. • With electronic stability control, your car’s computer helps sense when you may be losing control around a corner or curve and can stabilize your car if it begins to veer off your intended path. • Adaptive headlights adjust to changing roadway conditions -- such as curves -- to provide optimum illumination along the roadway during the long winter nights and periods of low daytime visibility. “Driving in snow and ice requires much more focus on the conditions and an ability to adapt to an ever-changing, slippery environment,” says Daniel McGehee, director of the Transportation and Vehicle Safety Program at the University of Iowa. Research shows that most consumers are unsure about how some potentially life-saving vehicle safety technologies work. To get better acquainted with your car’s features and learn important winter driving skills, visit MyCarDoesWhat.org on Twitter and Facebook for videos and tools. With the right knowledge and skills, you can make your winter journeys safer. (Courtesy: Statepoint)

Indian-Americans form PAC to back Trump
The billionaire real estate badshah running on a Republican platform may not really need their money or their backing, but a section of America’s wealthiest immigrants is throwing its support behind Donald Trump in the race to the White House. A few Indian-Americans in the New York Tristate area have registered a political action committee (PAC) to support and fundraise for Trump amid signs that he is not about to go away from the presidential race despite the Republican establishment’s lack of enthusiasm for his candidature. “On realising that the agenda of Donald J Trump for President 2016 is focused on reviving the American economy, rightly bring-
ing America on the world stage, defeating terrorism and establishing peace through strength, many Indian-Americans believe that he is the best hope for America and the right candidate to be the next president...” the new PAC said in a statement. The “many” is ambiguous enough. Indian-Americans typically lean centreleft and vote Democrat. More than 80% of eligible voters went with Obama in the last two elections. But a small section of wealthier Indian-Americans have gravitated towards the Republican Party in recent years. According to the statement, the idea to start a PAC came about last month, and it was registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on January 21, 2016 with the sole goal to “garner actively the support of all Americans, but particularly Indian-Americans, to have Donald J Trump become the next President of the USA”.
Four individuals were named to run the PAC. Dr A D Amar, a professor with Seton Hall University in New Jersey was named president; Anand Ahuja, an New York-based attorney as vice-president; Devendra “Dave” Makkar, a businessman in New Jersey as treasurer; and Dr Sudhir Parikh, an allergist and immunologist in New Jersey was named chair of fund-raising. Trump though has repeatedly vowed not to take money from individuals or special interest groups, or seek support from PACs, boasting that he has enough money to fund his own campaign. So the exertions of the PAC could well be in vain at least in so far as raising lolly goes. Even in terms of electoral support, Indian-Americans form a negligible vote block numerically at less than 1% of the population. (Courtesy: Times of India)

Obama On Intolerance
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama warned on Wednesday against the rise of religious intolerance in a veiled criticism of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during an event to honour men and women who helped save Jews from peril in the Holocaust. Obama made the remarks at the Israeli Embassy, where he attended a ceremony to honour, posthumously, two Americans and two Polish people who protected Jews from the Nazis during World War II. The event came on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. His remarks, the first of a sitting US president at Israel’s embassy, were also a sign of lowering tensions between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. The event was hosted by Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer, who helped orchestrate Netanyahu’s speech last year to Congress about the then-pending Iran nuclear deal. The speech irked the White House. Dermer, at the ceremony on Wednesday, thanked Obama for the message of friendship he conveyed by attending. The president is also clearly irked by Trump’s rhetoric. The billionaire businessman, the front-runner in the race for the Republican nomination for the November 8 election, has called for the United States to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country as a national security measure. “An attack on any faith is an attack on all of our faiths,” Obama said. “For Americans, in particular, we should understand that it’s an attack on our diversity, on the very idea that people of different backgrounds can live together and thrive together.” Obama added, “Here, tonight, we must confront the reality that around the world, anti-Semitism is on the rise. We cannot deny it.” “Too often, especially in times of change, especially in times of anxiety and uncertainty, we are too willing to give into a base desire to find someone else - someone different - to blame for our struggles,” he said. Before Obama spoke, “Righteous Among the Nations” awards were presented to the families of Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, teacher Lois Gunden, and a Polish couple, Walery and Maryla Zbijewski, for risking their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust. The awards were given by Yad Vashem, an organization to commemorate the Holocaust, on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people.

Terrorist havens in Pakistan pose serious problem: US general
Jan 28, 2016 WASHINGTON: Terrorist safe havens inside Pakistan, providing shelter to terrorist outfits like the Taliban and the Haqqani network, is a serious problem, a top US general nominated to be the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan said on Thursday. “I view it (terrorist safe havens inside Pakistan) as a serious problem,” General John “Mick” Nicholson told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing. If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace General John Campbell as commander of the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan at a time when serious concerns have been raised about the security situation in Afghanistan, where Taliban militants have caused large numbers of casualties and Islamic
State affiliates have made some inroads. “One of the biggest problems has been the sanctuary, particularly for the Haqqani Network, particularly the involvement of the ISI in Pakistan, which in many cases have been supporting the Haqqani Network. Have you seen any progress in this whole problem?” Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, asked General Nicholson. In response, Gen Nicholson said continued presence of the terrorist safe haven has been a major problem. “This has been one of the principal challenges. It’s a sanctuary that our enemies, in particular the Haqqani Network, have enjoyed inside Pakistan,” he said. “I note that the Pakistanis have also suffered significant casualties
in the tens of thousands in terms of their security forces and their civilians,” he noted. However, the US is not satisfied that there’s adequate pressure put on the Haqqanis, he told the Senators. The recent operations in northern Waziristan have helped, as well as stationing of additional soldiers in tribal areas. “Some of this has pushed some fighters into Afghanistan, which has contributed to some of the issues there,” he said. “So, it’s a mixed story, and it’s one that requires continuous engagement by the Pakistan military. And then, increasingly, we want to encourage the Afghans and the Pakistan military forces to work more closely together against their common enemies,” Nicholson said. Earlier, in a written response
to questions, Nicholson asked Pakistan to take persistent action against the Taliban, particularly the Haqqani Network. “Pakistan’s pressure on the Taliban combined with its support to the reconciliation process are mutually reinforcing,” he added. Haqqani network, which is linked to al-Qaeda has also been blamed
for several deadly attacks against Western and Indian interests in Afghanistan, including the 2008 bombing of the Indian mission in Kabul. (Courtesy: Times of India)

How To Pick The Right Watch For Your Valentine The stakes are high on Valentine’s Day. When you are shopping for just one special someone, there’s very little room for error. While
flowers or chocolate are a great way to say “I love you,” you may want to indulge your love with something longer lasting. For the perfect gift, consider a timeless classic -- a watch to suit his or her personal style. But remember, one watch will not fit all personalities or lifestyles.
“The right watch can nurture the spirit of individuality and communicate one’s sense of style,” says Matthew Shell, vice president
of product development at watch brand Armitron. With that in mind, Shell offers these suggestions for finding the right watch for your loved one: • The trendsetter: For those who love looking their best, coordination of accessories is key. So whether you opt for a genuine
leather strap or a bracelet watch, look for a versatile timepiece that can transition from day to night or be dressed down or dressed up depending on the occasion. Before making a selection, consider your recipient’s favorites -- taking preferences like gold versus silver and vintage versus modern into account. • The athlete: Enhance your loved one’s training efforts with a bold, sporty watch built to move. For example, Armitron Pro-Sport Digital watches feature lap timing, stop watches and chronographs to help runners, swimmers and other athletes push past their goals. Water resistant to 330 feet, this category of watches offers multicolored dials, soft touch resin straps, chrome bezels and silver tone buckle clo-
sures.
a diamond dial.
• The sentimentalist: If your gift recipient already has a favorite watch for everyday wear, consider something elegant that can -- but doesn’t have to be -- reserved for special occasions.
• The confident one: For the confident man, consider an automatic watch that does not require batteries to operate. The stainless steel automatic watch from Armitron has a skeleton movement and luminous dials. To make Valentine’s Day a success, consider the classic gift of a watch to show that your love is timeless. (Courtesy: Statepoint)
For instance, a bangle watch functions as jewelry and timepiece, putting form and function on the same level. Or for him, a watch featuring

What To Know About Applying For A Mortgage
Although homeownership doesn’t make good financial sense for ev-
eryone, some experts say you may be qualified to purchase real estate
without realizing it. “Factor in today’s very low interest rates and current home prices, and affordable mortgages are within reach for many qualified borrowers who may have been hesitant to enter the market,” says Christina Boyle, senior vice president and head of singlefamily sales and relationship management at Freddie Mac. After receiving your application, along with the required paycheck stubs, W-2s, bank statements and tax returns, lenders will evaluate the four Cs: • Capacity: Your income, employment history, savings, and monthly debt payments -- such as credit card charges and other financial obligations -- help lenders determine whether you have
the means to take on a mortgage comfortably.
More loan application tips can be found at myhome.freddiemac.com.
• Capital: The money and savings you have on hand, plus investments, properties, and other salable assets.
“You have choices, so interview lenders to compare costs,” says Boyle, who also recommends getting the process started early.
• Collateral: The value of the home that you plan to buy.
“Getting pre-approved for a loan can help you shop with confidence.”
• Credit: Your bill- and debt-paying record.

books on Indian festivals and mythology for three to nine year old children. This charming and informative series of children’s books introduces the major Hindu festivals

So I went ahead and started writing the stories in a style that I think kids find fun and non-preachy and collaborated on the illustrations to bring out the imagery that I want my stories to convey. As a mother of two hyperactive young boys, who otherwise cannot sit still for a minute, I know that the only way I am going to hold their attention is with a good story. Indie Meme Invites Hameed Sheikh Of Pakistani Film, Moor By Sumaiya Malik On Friday, January 15, Indie Meme showed Moor, Pakistan’s Oscar entry in the foreign film category, and invited Hameed Sheikh, the lead actor, to meet its audience and answer questions after the movie. About a hundred and fifty people who made up a diverse audience from South Asian and other back-
grounds attended the event at the Southwest Theater on Lakecreek Parkway. One could see college students and older folks follow the serious plot to the end and ask thought provoking questions to the actor. Moor, meaning mother in Pushto language, is the story of a family’s struggle with dishonesty. A retired stationmaster turns a blind eye to corruption in his small town and struggles with his values. His wife dies while reminding him how he owes allegiance to his real mother, which is the land he walks on. The stationmaster’s son sees a dishonest father and follows his footsteps until the stationmaster finds his real voice. The movie addresses patriotism, ownership, family and an enduring scuffle of making the correct choice. Actor, Hameed Sheikh, plays the stationmaster in the film. He is a seasoned actor who has played important roles in famous Pakistani movies like Khuda Key Liyay, O21 and many more. He is known for immersing himself so deeply in a
role that it’s hard to recognize him. At the event, he won the hearts of the people through his down to earth attitude. He told the audience how he the crew worked in extreme temperatures of the Baluchistan terrain to bring the message to the people. Patrons in the audience asked him questions about his role. An inter-
esting question came from a UT student who wanted to understand how land could be personified as a mother. Pakistani films are at a new juncture where intelligent movies of mainstream and independent cinema are being made. AADI, Austin Arts and Drama Initiative, brings these movies for special showing to Austin, but this is the first time Indie Meme formed a successful community partnership with them to work on Moor. Moor has created an alliance between Indie Meme and AADI, which promises future partnerships and more meaningful cinema for the Austin community. Hameed Sheikh’s trip was short but in the twenty-four hours that he was in Austin, he met a large chunk of the Pakistani and Indian community through the efforts of Alka Bhanot, the founder of Indie Meme whose passion for film and vision for honest collaboration forms permanent alliances whenever she reaches out to members in the community. Events like these open a window to cultures far away and help generations’ young and old try to understand a point of view different from their own.

Make A Style Statement: Top Interior Design Trends On The Horizon You likely set goals to eat right and save money. But what goals do you set for your home? “Now is the perfect time to experiment with décor trends,” says Taniya Nayak, interior designer and DIY television personality.
combs, florals and leaves. “Pair these with neutral colors for a soothing atmosphere, or blow them up and paint them in a bright color for a bold statement,” says Nayak.
Here are six home décor trends Nayak predicts will soon be filling your Pinterest feed.
You can also integrate natural patterns through accent pieces, such as light fixtures that have reflective metals to mimic sparkling water, or a textured jute rug.
Presswork Palette
Digitally Defined
Generate conversation and set the tone for your space by incorporating text -- think monograms, family names or inspirational quotes.
“Geometric shapes and angles have become associated with technology; evoking creativity and innovative design,” says Nayak.
“Use various fonts and sizes to create different moods,” says Nayak. “Letters can be sharp and defined to create a contemporary and stylish aesthetic, or soft and casual for an elegant and timeless feel.”
Incorporate this trend with geometric floor tiles in different colors. Or use pixilation for a modern, clean look. Pixelated artwork made up of monochromatic cubes can be simplistic and versatile.
Nature’s Patterns
Fresh and Fab
For clean interior spaces with lots of detail, try simple designs inspired by nature, such as honey-
Multiple bright colors mixed together elevate the mood in any space. Paint a bold accent wall
for an eye-catching statement. Or brightly paint a piece of antique furniture for an unexpected combination of modern and traditional. “When it comes to painting an accent wall or furniture, one of the most important tools you need is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape,” advises Nayak. Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape brand Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface tapes can be used on a variety of surfaces and help deliver sharp lines, so your handiwork looks professional. Textured Terrain From transformed wood pallets to worn leather or tin ceilings, aged raw materials offer texture and help give a space dimension. “Incorporate it into an application you wouldn’t typically think to use the material,” suggests Nayak. “For example, use concrete on a wall instead of the floor.” Home décor items can easily be made to look aged by adding paint and other finishes for a distressed look. Global Style Create a warm, friendly space with a parade of patterns from different cultures. “Don’t be afraid to mix multiple prints within a space,” says Nayak. “Tie these patterns together by carrying a similar color throughout each element in the room.” “When trying a new trend, make sure it accurately represents your style -- and remember you don’t have to go all out,” adds Nayak. “Any concept can be incorporated as little or as much as you’d like.” (Courtesy: Statepoint)

Daikon Radish
By Venkappa Gani Daikon (Raphanus Sativus) belongs to radish family unlike common round red radish this one is white and long. It is popular in
Asian countries as well as in many other countries used for culinary product. In north america it is being used as cover crop to prevent soil compression.
Daikon is known by various names white long radish, Mooli (Hindi) Moolangi (Kannada) Cultivating: Growing Daikon is easy. It needs sandy rich soil with lot of moisture. Here in central texas is grown as winter crop. It is grown in south east Asian countries tropical weather. It does not like very hot temperature. It has long white root varying in size 6-18 inches. It is grown from seeds directly into the ground spacing 4-6 inches apart. I have been trying various vegetable growing here central Texas. Last year purchased daikan cover crop seeds for testing. Planted seeds during fall but due to lack of rains did not have good crop.

Supersti-
Superstitions are what make sports so unique. Some of the oddest, zaniest traditions imaginable are taken as conventional, that is, if they help teams win. “Before every home game in college, I would wake up and play the same song,” says D.C. Crenshaw, a former football player who is now the founder of Fete Lifestyle Magazine. “There were guys who wore the same shirt from high school under their uniforms or had their own choice of music. You just didn’t
feel right if your ritual was off!” Sometimes, superstitions can use a bit of tweaking. Take the time-honored approach of sports facial hair. Fans and players alike grow beautiful beards during a team’s hot streak, but might shave to switch it up if their favorite team is having trouble finding the end zone week in and week out. D.C. suggests trying out the BIC Flex 5 razor, which has an edging blade for precise control for any facial hair style you choose. Whether you want to be fully shaved or sporting a playoff beard, you need the right tool for the job. For more information about the BIC Flex 5 Razor and additional ideas on how to smooth up, visit BicFlexRazors.com. Roots are made into pickles. These are used in sambar which is popular in Indian cooking. Samber will be used with cooked rice for meal. Daikon is grown extensively in California and Texas.

THIRD ANNUAL REPUBLIC DAY DINNER, IACT AUSTIN (Continued from page 1) A wonderful evening of friendship, culture, inspiration, and celebration
of democracy featured a powerful keynote address by Texas Teacher of the Year Revathi Balakrishnan, along with cultural performances and award presentations. IACT holds this annual gala to commemorate the day that India’s constitution took effect, January 26, 1950. The event highlights the links between the Indian Americans residing in the world’s oldest democracy, the United States, and their homeland, the oldest. As the guests arrived, old friends and new began the evening in a lively atmosphere enjoying wine, appetizers and conversation. A series of dignitaries attended, including: • Austin Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo • City Councilmembers Leslie Pool, Greg Casar, Delia Garza, Ann Kitchen, Sherri Gallo, Ora Houston, and Don Zimmerman • City Manager Marc Ott, Assistant City Manager Rey Arellano • Police Monitor Margo Frasier, Austin Police Department Commander Daryl Jamail, and Training Specialist Michelle Lau
• County Commissioner Precinct 2 Brigid Shea • Travis County Republi-
can Party chairman James Dickey • Texas Legislators Members Celia Israel from House District 50 and Donna Howard from House District 48 • Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar, Bruce Elfant, IACT and its membership also welcomed Tejas Vakil, a local Indian American running for the US House of Representatives for Texas District 21. As the cocktail hour ended, the President of IACT, Judge George Thomas, began the evening by welcoming the guests and expressing the need for Indian American engagement in politics and society. From that rousing call to action the event shifted to a more metaphysical direction, as Councilwoman Pool introduced Usha Akella, local literary luminary the 2014-15 Cultural Ambassador for the City of Austin. Akella used ancient Hindu Scripture along with her writings to illustrate India’s deep historical perspectives on democracy. Next in the evening’s program came the presentation of the Trailblazer Awards, given to Austinites and local organizations that exemplify IACT’s core mission.
This year IACT honored The Austin South Asian, the only South Asian news publication in the community, Bruce Elfant, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar, and Revathi Balakrishnan for her award-winning work in education. As the evening continued, Ms. Balakrishnan’s keynote address earned a standing ovation as she recounted student successes and described the challenges that all teachers face. She further encouraged the audience to take ownership of the quality of education. Next the guests enjoyed a delicious dinner from local restaurant Taj Palace and as the guests dined, the emcee recognized the event’s generous sponsors: • Gold Sponsors: CP&Y, INC and Sanjay Paul of ABC Liquor/Westwood Liquor • Bronze Sponsors: Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), Quality Power The evening concluded with an amazing set of performances highlighting the cultural diversity of India, with dances from all over the country. For the last number audience members were invited to the stage for a crash course in Indian dancing! All in all, the event was a smashing success. Judge Thomas summed it up, “This banquet brings together the Austin Indian community and local leadership. It’s a real life example of education, engagement, and empowerment. But even more than that, this event shows Austin’s Indian Americans that our community is relevant and active. We look forward to capitalizing on all this enthusiasm with some successful activism. “
Wearables to soon track health by monitoring sweat Los Angeles Scientists have developed a wearable sensor system that can non-invasively monitor multiple biochemicals in sweat, measure skin temperature and sync the results to a smartphone in real time. The advance opens doors to wearable devices that alert users to health problems such as fatigue, dehydration and dangerously high body temperatures. “Human sweat contains physiologically rich information, thus making it an attractive body fluid for non-invasive wearable sensors,” said principal investigator Ali Javey, professor at University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). “However, sweat is complex and it is necessary to measure multiple targets to extract meaningful information about your state of health,” Javey said. “When studying the effects of exercise on human physiology, we typically take blood samples,” said George Brooks, a UC Berkeley professor. “With this noninvasive technology, someday it may be possible to know what’s going on physiologically without needle sticks or attaching little, disposable cups on you,” said Brooks. The prototype packs five sensors onto a flexible circuit board. The sensors measure the metabolites glucose and lactate, the electrolytes sodium and potassium, and skin temperature. “The integrated system allows us to use the measured skin temperature to calibrate and adjust the readings of other sensors in real time,” said Wei Gao, a postdoctoral fellow in his Javey’s lab. “This is important because the response of glucose and lactate sensors can be greatly influenced by temperature,” Gao said. Adjacent to the sensor array is the wireless printed circuit board with off-the-shelf silicon components. The researchers used more than 10 integrated circuit chips responsible for taking the measurements from the sensors, amplifying the signals, adjusting for temperature changes and wirelessly transmitting the data.

It’s crucial that Austin continues to make strides with pivotal policy issues in 2016 to improve the land development code through CodeNEXT and take next steps to achieve more stringent code enforcement.”

Mumbai To House World’s First Slum Museum ‘Design Museum Dharavi’ Dharavi, located in Mumbai and one of Asia’s biggest slums, will soon be home to the world’s first slum museum. Dharavi received much international attention after the release of Danny Boyle’s 2008 film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which used the area as its backdrop, and, which has since become a major tourist attraction. “It will be the first museum ever created in a slum,” Spanish artist Jorge Rubio, who is behind the
initiative, told AFP. The small mobile museum will open in February for two months and display everything from pottery and textiles to recycled items, he added. The goal of “Design Museum Dharavi” is to help change the negative perceptions about the area and instead focus on the creative talent that calls the neighborhood home. The museum will provide a
platform to the thousands of workers and craftsmen who will now get a chance to display their skills and take their work to the next level. The small-scale enterprises in Dharavi range from shops manufacturing leather goods to small tea stalls to toy factories. (Courtesy: IndiaWest)

them for a decorating project. Take her lead by throwing some sprinkles on the touch mat to scan, print and cut the images into your favorite shape. Then, tie each piece to ribbon and voila, festive party favors to hang on the wall for any birthday party!
Here are a few ways to use technology to power some family fun with your loved ones.
Spending time at home can be a nostalgic, cheerful experience. But between baking cookies together and watching movies, there are bound to be stretches of free time -especially for the kids. Borrow a few tips from LunchboxDad. com blogger, Beau Coffron, who uses c r e a t i v e b o r e d o m busters to keep the kids busy! Like Beau and his family, you can explore apps like Crayola DJ to brighten up a rainy day. The kids will love interacting with the projected turnstiles on the touch mat to show off their musical skills.
Make Things to Share Interactive computers such as Sprout by HP are recreating what it means to make things by merging the physical and digital worlds. Sprout is what HP calls an Immersive Computer; it comes with a touch screen, touch mat, overhead projector, HD camera and 3D scanner. With Sprout, you can grab items from the real world -- like your child’s birthday cake or lunchbox -- and easily scan them into the device. There are several different free apps available that can help you create, learn, interact and share. Do-It-Yourself Decorating If you’re in the mood to get crafty with the family, you can make non-traditional items such as party favors out of leftover sprinkles from birthday cakes you bake for loved ones. JoJotastic.com blogger, Joanna Hawley, doesn’t throw away leftover ingredients; instead she recycles

Interruptions During Infant Care Can Disrupt Child’s Brain Development
If you are taking care of a baby, you had better refrain from checking e-mails and text messages on your smartphone, as researchers have found that fragmented and chaotic maternal care can disrupt proper brain development in infants, which can lead to emotional
disorders later in life. The researchers discovered that the erratic maternal care of infants can increase the likelihood of risky behaviors, drug-seeking tendencies and depression in adolescence and adult life. “It is known that a vulnerability to emotional disorders, such as de-
pression, derives from interactions between our genes and the environment, especially during sensitive developmental periods,” said Tallie Baram of the University of California, Irvine. “Our work builds on many studies showing that maternal care is important for future emotional health. It shows that it is not how m u c h maternal care that influences adolescent behavior but the avoidance of fragmented and unpredictable care that is crucial,” Baram noted. “We might wish to turn off our mobile phone when caring for a baby and instead be predictable and consistent,” Baram said. The researchers studied the emotional outcomes of adolescent rats reared in either calm or chaotic environments and used mathematical approaches to
analyze the mothers’ nurturing behaviors. While the study was conducted with rodents, its findings implied that when mothers are nurturing their infants, numerous everyday interruptions — even those as seemingly harmless as phone calls and text messages — can have a long-lasting impact.
are not mature in newborns and infants, and these circuits are stimulated by predictable sequences of events, which seem to be critical
for their maturation, Baram stated. The study was published in the journal Translational Psychiatry. (Courtesy: Indiawest)

The researchers showed that consistent rhythms and patterns of maternal care seem to be crucially important for the developing brain, which needs predictable and continuous stimuli to ensure the growth of robust neuron networks. The brain’s dopamine-receptor pleasure circuits

Indian American Technologist Rahul Thakkar Wins Oscar For Technical Achievement
Rahul Thakkar was in the middle of a conversation with a friend at dinner when his phone buzzed. Thinking it might just be another regular phone call, he chose to ignore it. But then he received a message that he could not disregard: “Pick up the phone. You’ve just won an Oscar!” “It is quite humbling to be recognized by AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) with a technical achievement award,” Thakkar told.
determined to make his mark in the movie industry. In 1992, he secured funding to complete his graduate degree in computer science at Utah State University. There he met his mentor, Dr. Laurie Egbert, who encouraged Thakkar to pursue his dream by supporting his master’s thesis in animation technology in collaboration with students from the prestigious Ring-
“Imagine a YouTube interface that is a million times more powerful so that every animator and film editor can simultaneously review any part of the feature while in production,” Thakkar told.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that the work we did two decades ago was still in use by the film industry. I am honored to be sharing this award with Richard Chuang, a mentor and pioneer in visual effects,” the Indian American technologist added. “The visual effects and animation industry in India has grown in leaps and bounds. The world has enjoyed Hollywood’s coveted liveaction VFX films, and animated features, many of which have been made by animation studios across India by an incredible team of artists and technologists. In the years to come, I look forward to seeing many of their names in the list of Academy Award® winners,” he added. Thakkar, a Mumbaikar, made his foray into the world of movies at the age of 3 when he starred in a short film on safety. His father, Chandrakant Thakkar, was a renowned artist who appeared in many famous Gujarati and Hindi plays and had gueststarred in the celebrated Richard Attenborough movie “Gandhi” in 1982. Films were an integral part of life for young Rahul growing up. He was introduced to Hollywood blockbusters like “Terminator 2” and “The Abyss” while still in school, and that’s when he was
Their groundbreaking technology has been used in over 30 Hollywood feature length films including “Antz,” the 2001 Best Animated Feature Academy Award® winner “Shrek,” “Madagascar,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Kung Fu Panda,” as well as live-action films such as “Legend of Bagger Vance,” “Forces of Nature,” Mission Impossible II,” “AI – Artificial Intelligence,” and many more.
ling College of Art & Design. Following his graduation in 1994, Thakkar began his career creating visual effects for television commercials in New York, including building software for show openings for David Letterman and the live broadcast of election coverage for CBS in 1994 and 1996. Shortly thereafter, he joined the research and development team of ten at Dreamworks’ Pacific Data Images writing code as a media film color specialist. It was here that Thakkar and his colleague Richard Chuang developed their Academy Awardwinning design for the review workflows and advanced playback features of the DreamWorks Animation Media Review System.
“Within a year of development, everyone had started using our software, especially the production engineering team in PDI. We also showcased it to Spielberg’s team. Some even called it ‘Rahul’s Movie Player’,” he added. Thakkar was among first Indian Americans who made their mark in Hollywood. The tragic events of 9/11 had claimed some of his closest friends, which prompted an intensely personal decision of moving to New York to join the ‘War against Terror’. Thakkar served as technical architect at Pixia Corp. where he worked on satellite imagery. “Picture Google Earth 10 years ago with a 2000 mega pixel camera taking 2-6 images per second of an entire city like San Francisco with an incredibly powerful infrared lens,” he told about his work at Pixia. Thakkar completed 10 years in the
defense sector with 26 patents under his belt and grew the company from ground-up to 85 employees. “My mantra is keep feeling challenged at work every single day,” he said. “When I feel any different, I need to find a new project to keep me motivated.” Thakkar served as VP of Technology at Madison Square Garden thereafter, and more recently as VP of Technology at Brivio Inc., a leader of cloud-based physical access control systems. “The surveillance drones that were instrumental in saving ‘Captain Phillips’s’ boat from the Somalian pirates and several other marines/ special operatives in Afghanistan were powered by the software we developed,” Thakkar told IndiaWest about his recent accomplishments. Inspired by his mother, in the coming years he plans to help build spacecraft for deep space exploration. Thakkar currently resides with his wife and family in Virginia. When asked whether he missed living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Rahul quipped: “My family is happy, we have a decent sized house and the kids can go to private school and don’t have to spend a fortune to get all that.”
After a media management company applied for an Oscar nomination in the digital media category that impacts the growth of the film industry, an open nomination was announced in 2014. There were approximately nine products and more than 20 people being considered for the award. The Academy launched a thorough investigation and after two exhaustive interviews and dozens of employee corroboration, the Academy selected Thakkar and Chuang for the prestigious award. “My neighbors are excited and my wife is excited about my Oscar achievement, but my six-yearold daughter doesn’t understand it quite yet,” Thakkar said. “We’ve got to go shopping now for the event, though I think my wife’s already picked out her Plan B dress,” he quipped. Thakkar will officially receive his golden statuette from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contribution in the advancement of motion picture standards and technology at the Annual Scientific and Technical Awards presentation to be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on Feb. 13, 2016. BAAHUBALI Sweeps IIFA UTSAVAM Awards 2016; Surprisingly Prabhas And Rana Daggubati Declined Honors!
The much anticipated and highly publicized first edition of the IIFA Utsavam witnessed the who’s who of the South film industry at the
il and Malayalam film industries’ best talent in the year 2015. As expected this year’s biggest
Awards by winning as many as half the awards in the 12 category awards nite including Best Picture. S. S. Rajamouli deservedly won the Best director award for his superlative direction in BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING thus out beating his arch rival A.R. Murugadoss for his this year’s other big hit KATHTHI. Besides, the award won by BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING include Sathyaraj and Ramya Krishnan in the Best Supporting Role (Male), Supporting Role (Female) respectively. In addition BAAHUBALI also won awards for best Playback Singer Male and Female for Haricharan Seshadri and Geetha Madhuri.
Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad. The two days festival witnessed on Sunday the announcement of Tam-
commercial and critical blockbuster BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING swept the Tamil Film
However what has left millions of BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING fans is the exclusion of dynamic actor Prabhas, who despite his career best performance in BAAHU-
BALI has been ignored and instead Tamil actor Jayam Ravi awarded Best actor for his critically and commercially-acclaimed THANI ORUVAN. Another major goof-up in the awards is the sidelining of actor Rana Daggubati in the Best negative role category. Rana Daggubati’s negative role as the cruel and wicket ruler in BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING is one of the lifetime performances like the one delivered by Amjad Khan aka
Gabbar Singh in Bollywood hit SHOLAY! But shockingly the jury discarded his performance and has instead awarded Arvind Swamy in THANI ORUVAN! Amazing decision!!! One fails to understand the logic of the awards! The deserving return home empty handed and the undeserving basks in the glory! (Courtesy: Raaga’s music blog)

Airlift - Movie
STORY: In 1990, Kuwait’s invaded by Iraq. Rich Ranjit Katyal can escape with his wife and child - but what happens when Ranjit decides to ensure 1,70,000 Indians also go home?
Indians, desperate as the Embassy exits Kuwait.
REVIEW: So, Airlift has one of Akshay Kumar’s best performances - along with other sterling acts. Rich Indian-origin businessman Ranjit Katyal (Akshay) loves profits and dislikes the idea of India. But Ranjit’s golden life in the desert crumbles when Iraqi forces invade Kuwait. Suddenly, people are savagely shot in the streets, houses looted, buildings blown up, tanks taking over, choppers hovering maliciously amidst minarets. Iraqi Major Halaf (Inaamulhaq) offers Ranjit and his wife Amrita
Airlift features Akshay at his best - based on real-life characters, there’s little khiladi-wala swag in Akshay’s performance and more mature control. As Ranjit, who goes from protecting his kin to his countrymen, Akshay does a polished, restrained, powerful job. Nimrat conveys brittle edginess she asks Ranjit, “Ye Indian-Indian khelna, kya drama ho raha hai?” but grows into a woman who loves her husband’s humanitarian heart.
What happens when Ranjit takes responsibility for getting 1,70,000 Indians home?
(Nimrat) buy million-dollar tickets to leave with their child. But Ranjit’s also looking after thousands of
First Look At Google’s Crowdsourced Film ‘India In A Day’ Many films these days incorporate crowdsourcing to fund their projects; however, Google’s new film, “India In a Day,” the first look of which was released recently on YouTube, uses crowdsourced footage to tell what it describes as “the story of a single day in evolving India.”
“This first look video, which was previewed during Sundar Pichai’s keynote at Google For India, tells the stories of people whose lives are being transformed by the Internet,” it says on YouTube. The 3 minute, 54 second-long montaged video highlights the
hopes and aspirations of Indians and how the internet revolution in India is bringing about a change in the developing nation. It features three Indians belonging to various demographics: a boy, who uses Wi-Fi from a friend’s neighbor’s house since he does not have access to an internet connection; a man who develops apps from his house is shown surrounded by rice fields; and a young man, who is the only English speaker in a village. “India in a Day” is being directed by Canadian filmmaker Richie Mehta and its executive producers are “The Martian” director Ridley Scott and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. Filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Shekhar Kapur and R. Balki have served as creative consultants on the film. “It’s amazing how a simple internet connection can change people’s lives. I can now make amazing mobile apps from my own house,” one young man says in the clip.
Certain cameos are outstanding. Prakash Belawadi brings alive surly, suspicious George, Kumud Mishra deeply impresses as a quietly determined MEA babu and Inaamulhuq oozes smooth menace as he quotes ‘Amytabh Bachchan’ to Ranjit - before showing him his business partner, hanging from a crane outside a palace full of bloodied marble and broken glass. Airlift’s scale is impressive and editing (Hemanti Sarkar) deft. Some sequences - Iraqi soldiers brutally molesting an Indian girl, looting even onions, cheerily singing ‘Ek Do Teen’, dragging out a young mother, so “the boys can have some fun with her” - are intense. But the movie could’ve increased this intensity, the horror and taut, time-ticking dread that typify unforgettable siege/rescue films like Hotel Rwanda (2004), where you vividly felt humanity running out each second. Airlift depicts desperation but with more sound and light than darkness, more broad strokes than fine detail. Yet, Airlift works because it conveys a time when armies will attack civilians - you’re struck by how IS was born from the Iraqi army’s core - and raises Bollywood’s generic bar. Plus, it movingly celebrates the most beautiful flag in the world.

CHALK AND DUSTER STORY: Teachers Vidya Sawant (Shabana Azmi) and Jyoti Thakur (Juhi Chawla) impart knowledge and values to students in a middle-class school. However, when an ambitious shrew becomes the principal, they are forced to wage a ‘war’ to safeguard their legacy.
REVIEW:’Chalk N Duster’ has its heart in the right place. Made with an intention of showcasing the worms in the current education system, where money often gets merit over capability; this film can be lauded to some degree. However, it flounders in the first half due to its tacky narrative approach. Told like a TV serial, it takes the oft-taken path of following the underprivileged on local train rides to the Mumbai chawl. Okay so the point of a teacher’s life being hard is made. Yet, it’s predictable to see Shabana dabbing sweat with her sari pallav as she gets off an over-crowded Virar local, buying vada pav and keeping the positive spirit at home that has a handicapped husband (Girish Karnad) and their about-to-be chartered accountant daughter. The revered teacher also coaches the neighbourhood children for free!
Aziz Ansari’s ‘Master Of None’ Wins ‘Best Comedy Series’ At Critics’ Choice Awards
Indian American actor-comedian Aziz Ansari’s Netflix comedy series “Master of None,” which took over the hearts and minds of viewers since its debut in November last year, has now got the critics’ nod, too.
Fighting stiff competition from network shows like “Black-ish” and “Jane the Virgin”; two Amazon series, “Catastrophe” and “Transparent”; and FX Networks’ “You’re the Worst, “Master of None” won the award for the ‘Best Comedy Series’ at the 21st Critics’ Choice Television Awards that were held Jan. 17 in Santa Monica, Calif. “I really go to these things assuming I’m going to lose and eat these weird treats they give us, like the tiny hot dogs and sweet potatoes, so it’s definitely better to get this in addition to that,” Ansari, who was also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, quipped onstage. The series, which tracks the life of 30-year-old Dev, played by Ansari, who lives in New York and who has trouble deciding what to eat, let alone what direction to take his life in, also explores complex relationships between immigrant parents and their children.
