Kailash Satyarthi: I Will See The End Of Child Slavery In My Lifetime New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): When Kailash Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Prize nine years ago, he was often asked “What now?”. It was, however, a seven-year-old Devli’s question that made the social reformer keep going. “Why,” asked Devli, “didn’t you come sooner?”

abuse and slavery are practices that manage to survive due to the prevailing social order and the lack of a legal recourse to check it in early stages. The story of Kanhaiya Gu-
Ram Kripa was rescued as a child from a quarry in Faridabad, Haryana, and Vijay was saved from a life consigned to a brick kiln in Sitamarhi, Bihar. Vijay later helped in the rescue of several more children working in inhuman conditions there.
Sathyarthi’s consistent dedication to the cause of rescuing children from abuse, and his efforts spanning decades, are encapsulated in his book ‘Why Didn’t You Come Sooner?’ (Speaking Tiger). The campaigner against child labour released his book in the Capital on Sunday, December 10, which is also observed as Human Rights Day. And it was also on December 10, 2014, when Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The book contains 12 heart-tugging stories that speak of not just extremely dire conditions, but also of the resilience of children rescued from these circumstances and

In the course of the conversation around the book, Satyarthi pointed to a key component that makes rescues possible, and which lends hope for a better and secure future: compassion.
Several such children have grown up and built for themselves a respectable life of freedom and dignity.
Kanhaiya, as a child, was forced to work as a labourer because his father could not repay the loan he had taken from a zamindar for his sister’s wedding. Kanhaiya was later rescued, rehabilitated, and now is a teacher.
Quoting recent examples of minors rescued from abuse, Satyarthi narrated the tale of Ashraf, a domestic help enslaved at the home of a senior bureaucrat residing in the heart of the Capital. (Continued On Page 08)

She channeled more than 800 songs of Meerabai in her trances.” The musical features traditional music and instruments, and the choreography revives rarely performed Rajasthani folk dances. “In the South Asian American performance landscape in Austin, classical dance and Bollywood styles have become the
Meera, or Meerabai, was the most noted, Vaishnava female saint, in the Bhakti tradition of 16the century India. She was a prolific composer of poems and songs in Braj bhasha and Rajasthani, praising Lord Krishna. Belonging to a prominent royal family in Rajasthan, she was banished from the palace due to her devotion, and spent the rest of her life wandering from village to village, with her songs gaining her a large following. Written by Austin poet and playwright Usha Akella, this English-language production is composed by Mahesh Mahadev of PM Audios and Entertainment, and Meera’s singing voice was recorded by Dr. Priyadarshini, winner of the 2023 Silver Screen Woman Achiever Award for her work in over 180

Produced by Vintha Subramanian and Priya Subramony, Meera will premiere on January 13 and 14 at the Klett Center for the Performing Arts in Georgetown, TX. What Every Parent Or Caregiver With Kids In Childcare Needs To Know Childcare is essential for families across the United States. Millions of children attend childcare every day, and millions of parents and caregivers rely on it.
The country could lose 232,000 childcare jobs. In short, a collapse of a system that
spend up to one-third of their income on childcare, a significantly higher percentage
Even before the pandemic, the childcare system was falling short, despite the best efforts of many workers, providers and advocates.
While advocates, and many Americans agree that care should be accessible and affordable to all who need it, many programs are currently at risk.
But childcare has a huge positive impact. Childcare can set children up for success: improved physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing as well as stronger academic performance.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, childcare providers were under enormous strain.
It can also ensure stability for families. Few supports have such a profound impact on families’ ability to thrive.
The federal government responded with a nearly $24 billion investment to support providers.
If you are a parent or guardian with a child in a care setting, talk to your provider. Ask them if they are aware of the September 30 deadline, and how they think it might impact them as a provider or participating families.
This investment enabled them to pay workers, buy cleaning supplies, pay mortgages and respond to rising food costs. But those additional investments ended on September 30. According to recent research, this so-called “childcare cliff” could mean 70,000 childcare programs close, and approximately 3.2 million children lose their care spots.
families across the country rely on daily. This cliff is consistent with longer-term lack of investment. More than half of the U.S. population lives in a childcare desert. Working families with the lowest wages

Are These Common COPD Myths Preventing You From Living Your Best Life?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lifelong chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe, and is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. According to experts, the more knowledge a patient with COPD has about the disease, the better off they will be. A recent literature review from the American Lung Association found that patient education can help improve COPD self-management, provide skills for coping with related mental health challenges, improve overall health and quality of life, and may reduce hospital admissions. This is especially important for those who have been living with the disease for a long time who may not be aware of recent treatment options and updated treatment guidelines, or who may not be inclined to recognize new or worsening symptoms and report them back to their healthcare provider. To help people who have been living with the disease for 10 or more years live better, more active and enjoyable lives, the Ameri-
Truth: There is no cure for COPD, but treatment and management can help slow the progression of COPD and control symptoms, so a patient feels better and is able to spend more time doing what they enjoy. Myth: You cannot exercise if you have COPD. Truth: The right amount and type of exercise has many benefits and tips on how to get started should be discussed with your healthcare provider Myth: COPD only affects the lungs so what you eat does not matter.
can Lung Association, with support from Sanofi and Regeneron, launched the new “COPD for Life” campaign. As part of the campaign, they are busting some common myths about the disease: Myth: COPD is a man’s disease. Truth: More women are living with COPD
compared to men and deaths from COPD are higher in women than in men. Everyone with risk factors and those experiencing early warning signs, no matter their age or gender, should talk to their healthcare provider. Myth: There is no treatment for COPD.
Advocating For Yourself Or Loved Ones When Bladder Cancer Is Suspected If you or someone you know may have bladder cancer, being well informed could get you the best diagnosis and treatment. In fact, according to an article published in “Urologic Oncology,” in 46.5% of the cases where a bladder was removed because of advanced cancer, a very serious type of tumor called carcinoma in situ (CIS) had been missed in past transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) procedures. This alarming statistic magnifies the need for urologists to have enhanced tumor visibility during TURBTs. There is one procedure that can offer visibility of hard-to-see tumors including CIS; it’s called Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC). Here’s what to know: TURBT can be a critical diagnostic step when done properly and precisely. The TURBT provides essential information regarding the number of tumors, tumor sizes, locations and depth of invasion. All these factors significantly inform the identification of a patient’s risk category, which can subsequently impact treatment decisions. Currently, White Light Cystoscopy is most commonly used for a patient’s first TURBT and is considered the standard level of care. However, research suggests that using White Light Cystoscopy alone may be inadequate, causing:
• Incomplete tumor resection: After one year, there is a rate of up to 61% of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer recurrence, suggesting incomplete tumor resection when using only White Light Cystoscopy. • New tumor growth: Up to 70% of patients have tumors recur after standard TURBT. • Tumors found during subsequent TURBT procedures: Up to 86% of residual tumors are found at the original resection site after initial white-light TURBT. So, how can patients ensure better diagnostics and treatment? Experts say that asking for BLC during the first TURBT is a great way to advocate for yourself or a loved one. BLC is a technology that allows urologists to see tumors that white light alone may miss. Unfortunately, it is not always utilized at the first encounter with the patient. Suzanne B. Merrill, MD, FACS, Colorado Urology said, “By using Blue Light Cystoscopy for first TURBT, urologists can more completely assess the bladder, achieve greater tumor eradication and provide more data for appropriate diagnosis. Doing the procedure with enhanced visibility right at the start of patient care can better establish the appropriate treatment regimen for each
Truth: Most people are surprised to learn that the food they eat may affect their breathing. Talking to your healthcare provider about the right types of foods for you may help you breathe easier. Myth: If you already have COPD, quitting smoking won’t help. Truth: Quitting smoking is an important part of any COPD treatment plan. The chemicals in cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars can further damage lungs and may prevent medications from working as well as they could.
patient and lower the risk of disease recurrence.”
Myth: A patient should manage COPD on their own.
Dr. Merrill recommends that patients and their loved ones be their own advocates when it comes to their diagnosis.
Truth: People who work closely with their healthcare providers to have a good treatment plan have better health outcomes. It’s especially important to see a healthcare provider if symptoms change or worsen. Likewise, supportive services, such as inperson or virtual support groups, can have a positive impact on health outcomes. Some studies indicate that positive social support is associated with reduced hospitalizations, fewer exacerbations, better health status and improved disease management behaviors.
Need some tips for how to talk to your urologist about TURBT and BLC? Follow these steps: 1. Find a trusted urologist in your area. 2. Inquire about BLC with your urologist. 3. Explain to your urologist that you’re interested in BLC at your first TURBT to ensure better tumor visibility. 4. If your urologist does not offer BLC, find one that does. To find locations that offer BLC, visit https:// rebrand.ly/BLC-Locations. “When it comes to your medical care, you should always feel comfortable advocating for yourself,” says Dr. Merrill. “You may need to speak to more than one urologist, but doing so can mean better outcomes for your health in the long term.” This article is sponsored by Photocure, Inc. How To Be A Philanthropist When Money Is Tight
While contributing to a worthwhile cause is a common aspiration, actually doing so right now may feel unrealistic if you’re struggling with your own finances. According to an April 2023 Gallup study, 61% of U.S. adults said recent price increases have caused financial hardship for their household—this is up from 55% in November 2022, and the highest since Gallup’s first reading on the measure in November 2021. “With so many people financially challenged, one may assume that being philanthropic is reserved solely for the wealthy,” says Stephanie Buckley, Head of Trust Philanthropic Services for Wells Fargo’s Wealth & Investment Management division. “Yet, financial support is just one way of being charitable. If you reframe what philanthropy is, you’ll realize you don’t have to be ultra-wealthy to give in a meaningful way.” According to Buckley, just about anyone can give one of the Five T’s of Philanthropy, which she explains further here: 1. Time: Volunteer hours, mentoring. 2. Talent: Professional, leadership skills. 3. Treasure: Donating goods to a nonprofit organization. 4. Ties: Leveraging your relationships to help others. 5. Testimony: Being an advocate of a charity. No matter how you go about giving back, you can help maximize
your impact with these tips from Buckley: • Share your experiences:
• Not Insured by the FDIC or Any Federal Government Agency • Not a Deposit or Other Obligation of, or Guaranteed by, the Bank or Any Bank Affiliate • Subject to Investment Risks, Including Possible Loss of the Principal Amount Invested
Did you have a great experience volunteering? Is there a cause that’s particularly meaningful to you? Tell your friends and family. Whether you’re on a coffee date or at your child’s soccer game, spreading the word face-to-face is an effective way of advocating for a charity. • Comb your closet: You likely have more possessions than you actually need or want. Do a thorough clean-out of your home and donate the items or the profits from the sale of the items to a local nonprofit. Not only are you contributing to a worthy cause, you may gain a tax benefit that doesn’t involve opening your wallet. Just be sure to ask for a receipt. • Pass it on:

are plenty of family-friendly ways to instill the habit of giving back. • Be creative: If your days are busy, creatively build giving back into your current schedule. For example, if you’re teaching your teen to drive, incorporate delivering meals to the elderly or infirm into their practice hours on the road. If you’re providing professional advice or tutoring, build video conference meetings into your lunch hour once a week. • Create an estate plan: Incorporate philanthropy into your legacy through your estate plan in a tax-advantaged way. One smart way to do so, whether you have significant wealth or not, is through your retirement assets. An added benefit from this giving tactic is that nonprofit organizations do not pay taxes on gifts sourced from a pre-tax retirement plan, as your family would. Consider gifting your heirs other assets such as stock or real estate instead. A Woman Working At NASA Has Become The First Indian Citizen To Operate A Mars Rover Akshata Krishnamurthy is an Indian woman who created history as she became the first person from the country to operate the Mars rover with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States. She shared her achievement on Instagram, saying, “No dream is ever too big or crazy. Believe in yourself, keep those blinkers on and keep working! I promise you’ll get there if you work hard.” Akshata is a PhD holder from the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). She is among the few Indians who joined NASA for a full-time opportunity. According to her LinkedIn profile, Akshata is a principal investigator and mission science phase lead at NASA. She has been working at NASA for over five years now. Akshata shared her inspiring journey on Instagram and how she became the first Indian citizen to operate a rover on Mars and collect samples to bring back to Earth. Akshata’s journey began 13 years ago when she came to the United States with a dream to work at NASA and lead science and robotic operations on Earth and Mars. However, she was discouraged from having unrealistic goals as she was a foreign national on a visa. People told her
to have a different plan or change her field entirely. However, Akshata blocked those comments and persevered until she reached the goal. “From getting my PhD at MIT to knocking 100s of doors to get hired full-time at NASA, nothing came easy. Today, I work on multiple cool space missions, including the Perseverance rover collecting samples to bring back to Earth,” she wrote. Since then, the video she posted has garnered over seven lakh views. Her followers hailed her for her achievement and for making the country proud. “Seriously, this is very impressive and commendable! Folks don’t realize how many hardworking and talented individuals are needed in every sector of our workforce to keep advancing society,” a user wrote. Another user said, “Women like you are an inspiration to aspiring female youth leaders.” “So inspiring, Dr Krishnamurthy. People like you are an absolute inspiration for the younger ones. Wish you the best of the best in the years to come. Congratulations again,” another user commented. A user added, “MIT and NASA? Living the dream. You go girl.” (Courtesy: https://www.wionews.com/)

Why You Should Put Tamarind On The Menu In 2024
Tamarind, a spice native to Africa, India and the Middle East, has lent its acidic, tangy-sweet flavor to Latin, Caribbean and Mexican cuisines for centuries. Today, this plump, pod-like fruit is jet-setting across the world, feeding a global curiosity for what’s next in food, drink and flavor. That’s according to the 24th edition of McCormick’s Flavor Forecast, an annual report illuminating the latest culinary trends shaping the way people prepare and enjoy food worldwide. Every year, over four dozen global chefs, culinary professionals, trend trackers, food technologists and team members tap into their expertise and passion to uncover stand-out predictions and trends, and with this year’s report, they’ve identified tamarind as the flavor to watch out for. “We’re thrilled to encourage people to experience the versatility and tang of tamarind. It’s truly the
perfect ingredient that can be incorporated into both savory and sweet dishes,” says Hadar Cohen Aviram, executive chef, U.S. Consumer at McCormick. Whether you’re a home chef or foodie, McCormick is dishing up inspiration for incorporating tamarind into your life, both at home and when dining out with its new Tamarind & Pasilla Chile Seasoning, and by collaborating with Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer on limited-edition, tamarindinfused menu items. McCormick is also sharing a recipe for Tamarind Lemon Pepper Lemonade. All grown up and ready to party, this punchy twist on classic lemonade is refreshingly different. Garnish with ground black pepper on the rim for a subtle finishing bite. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Ingredients:
Lemon Pepper Syrup: • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup water • 1/4 cup McCormick Coarse Ground Black Pepper, ground with mortar and pestle • 1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Lemon Extract Lemon Pepper Sugar: • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 tablespoon McCormick Coarse Ground Black Pepper • 1 lemon, zest only Tamarind Lemonade: • 6 cups water •3/4 cup fresh lemon juice • 6 teaspoons tamarind paste Instructions: 1. For the Lemon Pepper Syrup, mix sugar, water and black pepper in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved.
Remove from heat; let steep for 15 minutes. Strain through a very fine mesh sieve. Stir in lemon extract; cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. 2. For the Lemon Pepper Sugar, mix sugar, black pepper and lemon zest until no lumps remain. Store in an airtight container until ready to serve. 3. Place 1 tablespoon of the Syrup in shallow bowl. Dip rims of 6 (10-ounce) glasses into Syrup, then dip in Lemon Pepper Sugar to coat. Fill glasses halfway with ice; set aside. 4. To prepare Lemonade, whisk water, remaining Syrup, lemon juice and tamarind concentrate in a large pitcher until well blended. Pour into prepared glasses. Refrigerate until chilled or serve immediately. Garnish with fresh lemon wedges, if desired. Need additional 2024 culinary inspiration? The report also identi-
fied these trends: • Sour Power: From tamarind to coconut vinegar, acidic agents are revolutionizing menus to open senses, boost crave-ability and even “cook” without heat. • Thoughtfully Borrowed: A reinvention of regional-traditional cuisine is paying homage and respect to chefs’ roots with inspiring ingredients and techniques. • Indulgence Redefined: Today, indulgence is all about emotions and memories. Two ways this trend comes to life are through “newstalgia,” with brands and restaurants reintroducing childhood favorites with gourmet twists, and “food maximalism,” layering flavors to create a feast for the senses and ultra-customize preferences. “There is no shortage of trends to uncover, which allows us to continue to shake up the way people cook and eat,” said Cohen Aviram. Pilot Programme For Domestic Renewal Of H-1B Visa Clears White House Review (Continued From Page 01) Under the pilot cleared by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) review on December 15, the qualif ied H-1B visa applicants will not have to travel abroad to renew the work visa. The OIRA is a statutory part of the office of management and budget within the executive office of the US President. In November, Julie Stufft, deputy assistant secretary of sate for visa services, said, “In India, the demand (for US visas) is still very high. The wait time of six, eight and 12 months is not what we need and (it is) not indicative of how we view India.” “We want to make sure that Indian travellers can get appointments as quickly as possible. One way we are doing that is through the domestic visa renewal programme, which is focused very m uch on India. We are piloting that,” she said. Over three months, beginning in December, the state departments will be issuing 20,000 visas to foreign nationals who are already inside the country.
“We will do 20,000 in the first group. The vast majority of those will be Indian nationals living in the US and we will expand as it goes on.” “Because Indians are the largest skilled group of workers in the United States, we hope that India will benefit quite a bit from this programme and it will prevent people from having to travel back to India or anywhere for a visa appointment to get their visa renewal. It will allow our missions in India to concentrate on new applicants ,” Stufft told PTI last month. While the State Department has been working on launching such a programme on a pilot basis for quite some time now, it was formally announced during Modi’s visit. The plan, which was mentioned in the joint statement and announced by Modi during his address to the Indian diaspora at the Ronald Reagan Centre, has been cheered and welcomed by the Indian community in the US. The domestic visa renewal programme is only for work visas. (Courtesy: com/)

Kailash Satyarthi: I Will See The End Of Child Slavery In My Lifetime (Continued From Page 01) Ashraf had succumbed to his temptation and drank two sips of leftover milk in the glass of his employer’s child. His punishment was severe: his hands and feet were burnt. It was a local watchman who tipped off a journalist, who, in turn, alerted Satyarthi’s team and Ashraf was rescued. Rakhshanda Jalil asked that the senior bureaucrat was expected to be neither illiterate, nor ignorant, morally, legally or educationally, so “how can compassion be taught?” “See another’s problem as your own and try to make it right without any expectations in return,” Satyarthi replied. “With compassion comes courage. That’s why the watchman narrated the story to a journalist.” The crusader added: “Kindness puts the givers above the receivers, but compassion puts them at the same level, not one over the other.” Satyarthi has a vision for a system that will
disallow any child to be enslaved or abused. He envisions an India where no child suffers abuse due to forced labour, trafficking, marriage, slavery, or any other means. He sees every child going to school. Beginning with the grassroots, he suggests that villages nurture a child-centric democracy where they will be able to discuss their issues at school, so that their elders can address them seriously. Such a practice will help instill the values of responsibility and accountability in individuals from a younger age, Satyarthi pointed out. Lamenting that children are not a priority in development agendas, Sathyarthi said India is the best place to set the benchmark for a society where “every child should be free to be a child”. And he was brimming over with hope and determination when he said: “I will see the end of child slavery in my lifetime.”

Christmas Price Index Through The Years The good old days – when a gallon of gas was only $1.13 and a performance by 10 leaping lords could be purchased for just more than $2,900. The year was 1984 and those Lords-a-Leaping, along with the other 11 gifts from the popular holiday carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” were making their debut in the inaugural PNC Christmas Price Index (CPI). Dating back to the late 1700s, the carol’s early verses deviate very little from the version of the song known today. Though one factor has changed dramatically: the price tag for True Love’s annual holiday shopping binge. For 40 years, PNC Bank has been calculating what it would cost to buy all the gifts in the song as part of the CPI. The first CPI was created by a PNC predecessor bank as a whimsical holiday feature for a weekly business newsletter. Then, as now, the index was intended as a lighthearted comparison to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer
Price Index. Over the years, the index has risen and fallen with the economy and consumer sentiment. When it launched, the total cost to buy all 12 gifts was $20,023.57. In 2023, that cost has ballooned to $46,729.86. How it’s calculated Rebekah McCahan, a vice president with PNC’s investment strat-
egy team, has been responsible for calculating the CPI for 38 of its 40 years. She uses a variety of sources, including national bird suppliers, a hatchery and waterfowl farm, and a national pet store chain. A nursery provides the pear tree price; a jeweler assists with the five gold rings; and a Philadelphiabased dance company provides the price of the ladies dancing.
As to be expected, there have been several interesting data points throughout the years: • $4.14 - The price difference of the Seven Swans-a-Swimming since 1984. Every gift in the index has risen in price, but one of the most expensive is also the least changed. The swans debuted at $13,120.86 in 1984 and are priced at $13,125 in 2023. • $2,400 - Dollar for dollar, the four entertainment industry gifts (Ladies, Lords, Pipers and Drummers) have seen the biggest price increases and are most responsible for the CPI’s growth over the years. Each of these gifts has grown by at least $2,400 from their debut in 1984. • 8 – The number of times the Four Calling Birds have changed prices in the history of the index. Ever a model of consistency, the birds pricing remained the same for 17 years before their first modest increase. They last experienced an increase in 2013. • 233% – The percentage price increase of the Three French Hens in
2010 — the largest one-year percentage increase for a single gift in the index’s history. They jumped from $45 in 2009 to $150 the following year. • 2003 – The year the CPI experienced its biggest jump in total price. The index grew by 18.4% that year due to significant price increases for the calling birds, swans, pipers and drummers. • 2020 - The year of the single biggest percentage drop in the index (58.5%), and the lowest overall price of the index (only $16,168.14). The 2020 CPI did not include any of the entertainmentrelated gifts, due to pandemic restrictions on in-person performances. More han just numbers “I never imagined the CPI would have had the staying power that it has proven over the years,” McCahan said. “I don’t know what the next 40 years will bring, but I do know this is something I have enjoyed being part of. RSV Can Impact Adults Too. Here’s What To Know Each year, it’s estimated that more than 160,000 U.S. adults are hospitalized and 10,000 of them die due to Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, a common respiratory virus.

“I’m a respiratory therapist, and I know RSV can be serious, but I wasn’t expecting it to impact me the way that it did and for as long as it did,” says Michele. “I don’t think most people living with chronic lung disease realize how an RSV infection can impact their lives. I didn’t.”
While most people only develop mild symptoms similar to that of a common cold, RSV can be dangerous for certain people at high risk, including some adults. The American Lung Association’s campaign to educate people living in the United States about RSV in adults is supported in part by a grant from GSK. As part of the campaign, they are sharing patient insights, along with information about the risk of severe complications from RSV, and steps people can take to help protect themselves. ‘Not Going To Fake Convert’, Says Vivek Ramaswamy

son is here for a reason, and it is our moral obligation to fulfil that reason because God lives within each of us; even though God works through us in various ways, we are all equal.”
WASHINGTON: Indian-American and Republican presidential candidate hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy responded to a question about whether the US will accept a president of a different faith at a CNN town hall.
Ramaswamy once again reiterated his call to ban birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants and asserted, “We shouldn’t reward those who violate the law.”
Starting by saying he respectfully disagrees, Vivek went on to say he is not a ‘fake convert’ and won’t lie to ramp up his political career. Going on to add, Vivek asserted that Hinduism and Christianity “share the same value set in common.” “If I wanted to map out my political career and really solve it, I could fake convert. I’m not going to do that. I’m going to tell you about my faith,” he said. “My upbringing was quite conventional. My parents taught me that marriages are sacred, families are the cornerstone of society, abstinence before marriage is a viable option when things don’t work out, and adultery is wrong. that enjoying life’s pleasures requires giving
something up. Are those values not from elsewhere?” the US presidential candidate added. Vivek emphasised that there is only one true god and highlighted the values of the Hindu religion. He said, “There’s one true God. Don’t take his name in vain. Observe the Sabbath. Respect your parents. Don’t kill. Don’t lie. Don’t
cheat; don’t steal. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t covet. That’s when it hit me. We share the same values in common. There’s another core teaching in my faith, which is that we don’t get to choose who God works through. God chooses who God works through.” He added, “Based on my religious beliefs, I understand that every per-
He said, “I say this as the kid of legal immigrants: I favour ending birthright citizenship for those whose parents entered the country illegally because we shouldn’t reward those who violate the law with the intent of exploiting the citizenship rules. The best border policy is to end incentives for illegal migrants to be here. Democrats created them, but Republicans aren’t blameless
either.” Earlier this year, Ramaswamy announced his 2024 US presidential election bid. He is a native of southwest Ohio. His mother was a geriatric psychiatrist, and his father worked as an engineer at General Electric. Ramaswamy was born on August 9, 1985, and raised in Cincinnati. His parents migrated to the US from Kerala. He is the second Indian-American to enter the 2024 Republican presidential primary after Nikki Haley. He is the fourth Indian-American ever to run for the White House— Bobby Jindal ran in 2016 and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020. (Courtesy: https://www.newindianexpress.com/)

Tips To Lower Your Energy Costs This Winter The U.S. Department of Energy reports that low-income households face an energy burden – the portion of income spent on home energy costs – three times higher than other households, leading to tough budgeting decisions for many Americans. Energy efficiency is an important way to tackle home energy costs and can also support sustainability. Knowing that these issues are important to their customers and communities, Wells Fargo contributed more than $19 million last year to nonprofits that aim to advance sustainability, including a $500,000 grant to the Beneficial Electrification League. Whether your motivations are economic, sustainability-related or both, Keith Dennis, president of the Beneficial Electrification League, offers these smart tips to help you curb your energy consumption this winter:
With a home energy audit, you can obtain your Energy Star rating, important information regarding your energy usage, and identify sources of energy loss, which you can then take actions to correct. Resources for obtaining a professional energy audit or conducting one yourself can be found at energy.gov. 3. Beat the peak.
1. Give energy-efficient holiday gifts. Leverage holiday spending on items that can help you save down the line by giving energy-efficient gifts to members of your household this holiday season. Look for gas alternative products like electric lawn tools, bikes and scooters, smart devices and appliances. Energy-efficient electric products offer good results, are often more
cost efficient and support sustainability. Certain retrofits, updates and upgrades may even qualify your household for additional savings via a rebate, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. 2. Request an energy audit of your home.
Ask your utility provider about discounted rates. Some offer cheaper rates during parts of the day when general usage is down — think early in the day or late at night. Strategically tackle your energy bills by doing laundry and other energyintensive chores at off-peak times. 4. Take advantage of tax credits. Making energy improvements to your home? The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 expanded the tax
credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses available. Look for tax credits on items like new energy-efficient exterior doors, windows, central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers and heat pumps. 5. Utilize electric technology. Consider installing a smart thermostat, smart switches, or smart home devices for energy-intensive household items like, lights and heating systems. Smart technology is designed to automatically adjust to your needs, helping you save energy and money. During a long cold winter, energyefficient technologies and updates can help you weather the season, for a cozier home and a lower-carbon future. (StatePoint)

Wellness Tips For A New You In The New Year
If your list of New Year’s resolutions is a mile long, you may be feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start.
great tasting flavors, Sausage & Cheese, Salsa, Bacon & Cheese, and Loaded Potato Scramble, meaning you certainly won’t get bored putting your new breakfast plan into action.
Let these three essential wellness tips set you up for a successful year and give you the power, energy and determination you need to reach all your other goals.
Practice Self-Care
Make Time For Breakfast Many people make the mistake of skipping breakfast, particularly if they are trying to lose weight. But breakfast is an essential part of your overall health and wellbeing, giving you the fuel and energy you need to power the day until lunch. This is important to help kickstart your metabolism and regulate your hunger. Think you don’t have time to prepare a healthy breakfast? You’re not alone. However, many are open to implementing this habit with quicker breakfast options that cut prep time in half. In fact, 51% of consumers agree that frozen
Between work, family life and other commitments, it can seem challenging to carve out time for yourself. breakfast foods are the most convenient option and 37% said they would eat frozen breakfast foods more often if they were healthier, according to market research from Mintel. But a little self-care goes a long way toward helping you recharge and better manage all your responsibilities and stressors. Whether it’s going for a run, taking a yoga class, doing arts and crafts or reading a book, be sure to spend some time each week doing something that you love that makes you feel your best.
Prioritize Sleep Prioritizing sleep will improve every aspect of your physical and mental wellness and help you achieve all your other goals. Unfortunately, streaming devices, social media and other distractions make it all too easy to stay up later than you intend. Setting an alarm in the evening can serve as a gentle reminder that it’s time to put down devices and start your bedtime routine, helping you create a more consistent sleep schedule. This will also eliminate exposure to blue light late in the evening, an environmental factor that has been proven to make it harder to fall asleep. Achieving your goals starts with feeling your best. Make that happen in the New Year by prioritizing the most essential building blocks of health and wellness, from sunrise to sundown. (StatePoint)
US Economy Ends On High As US Heads Into Festive Week (Continued From Page 01)
nearing or below the $3 a gallon (3.03 liters to a gallon) mark in many states, while incomes are holding up as wages grow at rates above inflation.
“As 2023 comes to an end, it is increasingly clear that not only did the economy avoid a widely anticipated recession, but it was also a great year for the economy,” Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi posted on social media. After the Federal Reserve indicated, it was effectively finished raising interest rates last week, the markets got off to an early start to holiday merrymaking. The economy was troubled by a 9.1 percent high inflation last year marking it the largest in 41 years to hit Americans and the feds aggressively went on an interest rate hike with successive tranches over 52 weeks to rein in inflation to its desired level of 2 percent but instead managed to stabilize it at 2.7 percent.
The Federal Reserve has now literally ruled out any more cuts keeping it stable and raising hopes of interest rate cut in the New Year basing it on a projected optimism on a cache of reports to come from the US government, media reports
said. Expectations of inflation fell sharply from 4.5 percent a month ago to 2.7 percent now. It is the lowest level since March 2021. Gasoline prices have fallen in recent weeks,
That is likely to provide consumers with enough firepower to make it a decent holiday shopping season, media reports said. “As 2023 comes to an end, it is increasingly clear that not only did
the economy avoid a widely anticipated recession, but it was also a great year for the economy. Real GDP is on track to grow a heady 2.5 percent, unemployment has remained below 4 percent, and inflation has quickly receded,” Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi posted on social media. While Powell stopped short of saying the Fed might lower rates at his press conference recently declining to be drawn into any commitment, the central bank did upgrade its economic and inflation forecasts for next year and beyond. Gross domestic product for the fourth quarter was revised upward to 2.6 percent annual growth from 2.1 percent previously, while economic growth in 2024 is forecast at 1.4 percent. As the Arctic Warms, Its Waters Are Emitting Carbon
Runoff from one of North America’s largest rivers is driving intense carbon dioxide emissions in the Arctic Ocean.
material drains into the Beaufort Sea as a soup of dissolved carbon and sediment.
Some of the carbon is eventually released, or outgassed, into the atmosphere by natural processes.
When it comes to influencing climate change, the world’s smallest ocean punches above its weight. It’s been estimated that the cold waters of the Arctic absorb as much as 180 million metric tons of carbon per year – more than three times what New York City emits annually – making it one of Earth’s critical carbon sinks. But recent findings show that thawing permafrost and carbonrich runoff from Canada’s Mackenzie River trigger part of the Arctic Ocean to release more carbon dioxide (CO2) than it absorbs. The study, published earlier this year, explores how scientists are using state-of-the-art computer modeling to study rivers such as the Mackenzie, which flows into a region of the Arctic Ocean called
Scientists have thought of the southeastern Beaufort Sea as a weak-to-moderate CO2 sink, meaning it absorbs more of the greenhouse gas than it releases. But there has been great uncertainty due to a lack of data from the remote region.
the Beaufort Sea. Like many parts of the Arctic, the Mackenzie River and its delta have faced significantly warmer temperatures in recent years across all seasons, leading to more melting and thawing of waterways and landscapes.
In this marshy corner of Canada’s Northwest Territories, the continent’s second largest river system ends a thousand-mile journey that begins near Alberta. Along the way, the river acts as a conveyor belt for mineral nutrients as well as organic and inorganic matter. That
To fill that void, the study team adapted a global ocean biogeochemical model called ECCO-Darwin, which was developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The model assimilates nearly all available ocean observations col-
lected for more than two decades by sea- and satellite-based instruments (sea level observations from the Jason-series altimeters, for example, and ocean-bottom pressure from the GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions). The scientists used the model to simulate the discharge of fresh water and the elements and compounds it carries – including carbon, nitrogen, and silica – across nearly 20 years (from 2000 to 2019). The researchers, from France, the U.S., and Canada, found that the river discharge was triggering such intense outgassing in the southeastern Beaufort Sea that it tipped the carbon balance, leading to a net CO2 release of 0.13 million metric tons per year – roughly equivalent to the annual emissions from 28,000 gasoline-powered cars. Cozy Or Cramped? Americans Reveal How They Feel About Living In Small Spaces

A new survey from Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, discovers that more than half of Americans living in a small space say they feel cozy and comfortable as opposed to cramped.
Which areas prove to create the biggest cleaning conundrums? The kitchen ranks number one as the hardest room to keep neat and tidy, with the living room a close second, followed by the bedroom in third.
“We often assume that a larger home is the most desirable, but that’s not always the case,” says Chaffy Assad, product manager at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “In fact, nearly half of the survey respondents enjoy living in a small space, which most defined as a two-bedroom home or smaller.”
A more intimate space offers many benefits: 61% say it’s easier to clean, 54% say it costs less and helps save money and 52% say it’s easier to maintain. Additionally, 57% plan to continue living in their
home for the foreseeable future. While there are many benefits to tinier homes, there are some challenges to living with less space. Fifty-nine percent of Americans say the biggest downside is the lack

Self-Care For A Successful New Year
Resolving to commit to better selfcare can happen any time of the year, but there’s something about the calendar flipping to a new year that signals a fresh start. It’s the perfect starting point for new habits and a new approach to protecting your overall wellness. Self-care takes many forms. Maintaining a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise are some ways to promote your physical health. So is taking good care of your body’s largest organ: your skin. When it comes to mental health, getting organized is a surprisingly effective way to manage stress and keep your goals on track so you feel a sense of accomplishment.

Even slight variations can affect your comfort, so trying on different options is likely your best path toward finding the perfect fit.
Introduce Weights for Your Workout Whether you’ve hit a plateau or you’re just bored with your workout, adding dumbbells can introduce a whole new dimension by helping build muscle and burn more fat. Rotating muscle groups lets you give your muscles a chance to recover between workouts. The options are nearly endless, so think about how you’ll use them, where you’ll store them, whether shape or color matters and how much you want to spend. Tips To Support Your Metabolic Health In the New Year Good metabolic health is the backbone of great overall health. Unfortunately, many Americans misunderstand what metabolic health is and are not aware of its importance.
personal relationships, making it critical to nip them in the bud. To improve your metabolic health and feel your best in 2024, consider these tips: • Get active. Whether you’re hitting up the gym for a weight training session or simply going for a longer walk during your day, daily physical activity is recommended to support your metabolic health. Find activities, daily movement and workouts you enjoy and stick with them.
A recent poll from Metavo/Harris Poll Study reveals that nearly three in four North Americans have experienced at least one issue related to metabolic health in the past year, while only 52% have heard, read or seen information on metabolic health issues. What’s more, only 30% of North Americans know that metabolic health is not the same as gut health, and many falsely believe that metabolic issues mostly occur in those who are overweight. “This knowledge gap plays a fac-
tor in why many health issues related to metabolic health, such as brain fog, food cravings and energy slumps, often go unaddressed,” says Dr. Paul Spagnuolo, associate professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Guelph, whose research includes
finding new ways for people to proactively support their metabolic health.

While the average monthly heating bill hovers between $100 to $200, respondents say the highest bill they’ve received in recent years ranges from $200 to $300, and 76% of people say they have experienced an increase in their bill over the past five years. “It may seem like the first thing people would do if they’re cold is to turn up their thermostat, but that’s not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky, product manager for Weatherization at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “As
“Creating a warm home during the cold weather months is easy, and yet nearly half of Americans aren’t taking advantage of the benefits of this simple task,” Bujnovsky adds. it turns out, 80% of Americans say they have turned down their thermostat to save money in the winter.” The chilly temperatures this time of year clearly have an impact on people’s daily habits and even their sleep. Sixty percent of Americans say they have woken up in the middle of the night due to being cold in the winter. Respondents say they have tried everything, from wearing socks and a sweatshirt to bed to sleeping with three or more blankets and using a space heater, to cut
costs on their bill. However, there is a simple task that can help solve many of these woes: home weatherization. According to the research, more than half (51%) of Americans weatherize their home to prepare for the changing seasons, and 80% of people say they have noticed a decrease in their heating bills by using weatherizing solutions, such as window insulation kits, weatherstrip seals and door draft seals that slide on the bottom of the door to block drafts.
“If weatherizing the entire home seems challenging, begin with one room at a time. The survey finds the living room is the draftiest part of the home, so that is a good place to start. Installing a window kit that will add a barrier between the outdoor air and your home’s interior or putting weatherstrips around your windows can make all the difference and will help minimize energy loss.” (StatePoint)

How To Talk About Anti-Transgender Prejudice With Your Family it with a positive take. For example, let’s say you read a statistic that says that 40% of trans youth experienced homelessness in 2023. Put another way, you could say that 60% of trans youth had stable housing in 2023. Promoting negative statistics on trans and gender non-conforming issues pushes the narrative that “transness” is bad. Continue Talking
Have you ever wanted to talk about the anti-transgender movement with your family but are unsure how?
argument from escalating by asking clarifying questions that provide insight into your opponent’s perspective.
The conversation may start off pleasantly, but as it progresses, people may say things you don’t agree with, including hateful comments in support of anti-transgender prejudice and legislation.
When someone says something transphobic or factually incorrect, ask them two questions: Why do you think that? Where did you get your information?
So, how do you respond in an effective way without it going badly? Here are five things to keep in mind. Humanize, Don’t Politicize, the Issue Emphasize that anti-transgenderism negatively affects everyone. Everyone knows someone who is transgender or gender non-conforming, even if that person chooses not to disclose it. In some parts of the country, it is dangerous to come out as transgender, nonbinary or gender non-conforming because of anti-transgender prejudice, discrimination and laws. Simply put, transgender and gender non-conforming people are your friends, siblings, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, parents and children. So, hateful talk and political attacks directly affect cisgendered heterosexual people as well. Ask Clarifying Questions and Provide Corrections Sometimes, people are misinformed and repeat things they have heard instead of doing their own research. Other times, they believe that anti-transgenderism is justified because of misleading and harmful information promoted by the anti-trans movement. Either way, you can prevent or delay an
When they respond, present them with facts from your own research. You might say: “I don’t agree because I know, according to [insert resource here],” or “I think you should look at [insert resource here] because this source [explain what makes this source more credible].” If you identify as transgender, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming and feel comfortable debating someone with anti-transgender views, remember that even though you may not be a policy expert, you are an expert on your own experience. No one is qualified to tell you about your experience, and you are not obligated to answer any questions if you feel unsafe. Share Resources Sharing resources can combat ignorance and bigotry. Connect with local trans organizations, follow them on social media and participate in their events. This is a great way to access more resources and meet allies and transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people. Furthermore, you can direct people who want to learn more about anti-transgender prejudice and legislation to free resources like the Transgender Legislation Tracker. Flip the Script Unsurprisingly, data supporting anti-trans legislation is inherently negative. Reinterpret
Because they fear retaliation and harassment, many transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary people and allies cannot openly support trans causes, creating a sense of hopelessness, especially in areas where anti-trans prejudice and legislation are rampant.
trans and nonbinary people. Simply having conversations with trusted family and friends can be effective. There is a lot of confusion surrounding antitrans legislation in the ally community and in the transgender and gender non-conforming community. Across the board, most people are unaware of how pernicious anti-trans laws and social norms are, and how they make it hard for everyone to coexist peacefully. For more information, visit colage.org or transgenderstrategy.org. While conversations still may end in an argument, it helps to have tools for getting your point across while maintaining your dignity. (StatePoint)

U19 TEAM World Cup Captain Transforms Austin Cricket By Gulshan Singh In a significant development for the cricketing landscape of Austin, TX, Unmukt Chand, the celebrated World Cupwinning captain of India’s U19 team, has been sharing his skills and knowledge with young enthusiasts. He conducts regular batting clinics,
an invaluable resource for budding cricketers in the region.
After leading India’s U19 team to a World Cup victory, Unmukt Chand moved to the United States to participate in professional cricket leagues, including the Minor League Cricket (MiLC) and Major League Cricket (MLC). In the inaugural edition of MLC in July
2023, Chand proved his mettle as a key batter for the Los Angeles Knight Riders, a team owned by the renowned IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Chand has been instrumental in coaching and mentoring players across all age groups at WCI Academy in Austin. The academy, founded by Alok Singh, shares a special bond with Chand as both were trained under the same coach, Mr. MP Singh, a retired Sports Authority of India (SAI) Coach. This premier youth cricket academy, powered by Gary Kirsten, the World Cup and IPL winning coach, grooms young talents to compete in leagues and national champion-
ships like MLC Jr throughout the year. Chand’s batting clinics emphasize mastering the basics through rigorous drills and practice sessions. These two-day clinics, offered regularly during the winter season and beyond, provide a unique opportunity for players and parents to learn from Chand’s experiences, both on the field and off. Apart from technical skills, Chand strongly encourages young cricketers to write down their learnings and experiences after each training session, a practice he himself adopted under the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi. He has also penned a book titled “The Sky is the Limit - My Journey to the World Cup,” available on Amazon, which offers valuable insights into his journey. For more information, visit www. The release of CO2 into the atmosphere varied between seasons, being more pronounced in warmer months, when river discharge was high and there was less sea ice to cover and trap the gas.
These plantlike marine organisms capture and draw down atmospheric CO2during photosynthesis. The ECCO-Darwin model is being used to study these blooms and the ties between ice and life in the Arctic.
Ground Zero for Climate Change Scientists have for decades studied how carbon cycles between the open ocean and atmosphere, a process called air-sea CO2 flux.
Scientists are tracking these large and seemingly small changes in the Arctic and beyond because our ocean waters remain a critical buffer against a changing climate, sequestering as much as 48% of the carbon produced by burning fossil

However, the observational record is sparse along the coastal fringes of the Arctic, where the terrain, sea ice, and long polar nights can make long-term monitoring and experiments challenging. “With our model, we are trying to explore the real contribution of the coastal peripheries and rivers to the Arctic carbon cycle,” said lead author Clément Bertin, a scientist at Littoral Environnement et Sociétés in France. Such insights are critical because about half of the area of the Arctic Ocean is composed of coastal

And while the study focused on a particular corner of the Arctic Ocean, it can help tell a larger story of environmental change unfolding in the region.
For example, with Arctic lands thawing and more snow and ice melting, rivers are flowing more briskly and flushing more organic matter from permafrost and peatlands into the ocean.
Since the 1970s, the Arctic has warmed at least three times faster than anywhere else on Earth, transforming its waters and ecosystems, the scientists said. Some of these changes promote more CO2 out-

Prepared, Proactive, Powerful: Get Ready Now For Winter Season After seeing significant winter weather storms over the last three years, the City of Austin wants to remind residents that now is the time to prepare for the winter weather season. Central Texas is prone to a wide range of weather hazards, including flooding, wildfire, and extreme heat. As climate change occurs, weather emergencies can be unpredictable and escalate quickly. By being proactive about preparedness, Austinites can also free up first responders during emergencies so they can focus on those who are most vulnerable. California residents know to have go bags for wildfire evacuation and Florida residents know how to plan for hurricanes, we in Central Texas need to plan differently for emergencies,” said Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director, Ken Snipes. “You may lose electricity, water or gas for several days and this is reality of today’s disasters. We are here to help you understand what to do before an emergency so you can be more prepared to withstand the impacts.” Homeland Security and Emergency Management The Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) offers resources, plans,
guides, educational training, and more to help the community build resilience for future emergencies. With these resources, and by being proactive, the Austin and Travis County community can be better prepared for winter this year.

Austin Water Austin Water encourages customers to take steps now to prepare for winter. Following a few easy steps now will help customers protect their property and prevent damage when freezing weather does arrive in Austin. Locate your water shutoff. Locate the water main shutoff valve and keep it clear of debris and obstacles at all times. For most homes, the property owner’s shutoff valve is on your side of the water meter at the meter box. For renters, please consult with your property manager. If you cannot find your shutoff valve or if it is damaged, then you should be prepared to access the City shutoff valve in the meter box in an emergency. Weatherize exposed pipes and water heaters. Prepare to insulate pipes in unheated and drafty areas, such as an attic or garage. Also check manufacturer recommendations for your tanked and tankless water heaters. Hardware and plumbing supply stores carry insulation to help keep pipes from freezing. The faucet you choose should be the one that is the greatest distance from your main shutoff valve. It does not need to be a running trickle. If you do drip your faucet, capture the water for future use. Watch a video about how to drip faucets properly. Gather supplies to be prepared. How The Taj Was Saved From Environmental Pollution Agra, Dec 18 (IANS): Tourists who visit the 17th century monument of love, the Taj Mahal in Agra, rarely fail to ask if the world heritage monument has finally become safe from the dangers of air and water pollution.
the pollution level in the coming years. Visitors say that the safety apparatus around the Taj Mahal is efficient and sensitive to the needs of the tourists.
Is the Taj Mahal sinking? Is the colour of the mausoleum turning yellow or grey?
After recent tragic events at the Taj Mahal, involving tourists, the state government has stationed ambulances and basic facilities, along with the quick response teams.
The answer to all these questions and fears is both yes and no. When the SC pronounced its judgment in a series of directives while disposing of the PIL of eco lawyer MC Mehta, between 1993 and 1997, there was an international alarm over the conservational flaws and threats from environmental degradation in Agra. The apex court on the recommendations of the high-powered committee headed by scientist S Vardarajan shut down all polluting industries in the Taj Trapezium Zone, spread over 10,400 sq km, ordered the laying of a natural gas pipeline, asked the Mathura Oil Refinery to set up hydrocarbon cracker unit and use low sulphur crude, directed the UP government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to discourage the use of diesel generators. It also asked the UP Forest department to intensify greening efforts to insulate the Taj Mahal from air pollution. The SC also ordered the construction of a barrage or weir downstream of the Taj Mahal on the Yamuna River. Over the past two decades, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has undertaken a series of measures to protect the Taj Mahal and other monuments in Agra from pollution. Frequent mud therapy using Fullers Earth has removed dirt stains from the surface. The Taj looks cleaner and healthier, most tourists say. The Agra Municipal Corporation, presently headed by a young official Ankit Khandelwal, continuously ensures that the areas outside the Taj remain clean and attractive. The security agencies both inside and outside have modern types of equipment to deal with any situation. The UP Police have introduced innovative crowd management techniques, leading to a hassle-free experience for the visitors. Undoubtedly, some of the measures have yielded encouraging results. “The Taj looks as sparkling and cleaner than it did when I visited it with my family in 1994,” said an elderly visitor from Maharashtra.
On the negative side, are problems that need to be addressed by the Central government. One relates to the dry and polluted Yamuna river which is quite a put-off. First-time foreign visitors feel mesmerised and express their awe at the sight of the monument bathed in the soft wintry sunlight. “Yes, it looks dazzling and emits youthful romantic vibes,” said a female visitor from Italy. She had heard a lot about pollution and the toll it had taken on the mausoleum. But she agreed that it did not look fatigued or worn out. “Surely, a masterpiece, a divine architectural model,” her companion added. Agra’s Taj Mahal continues to draw hordes of tourists from all over the world. As the winter vacations have started the number of daily visitors has gone up to 50,000. “It’s kind of love at first sight. The Taj simply hypnotises you when you first see a glimpse from the main forecourt. As you move closer to the main structure, the size and scale, the grandeur, and the magnificence of the mausoleum overpowers you. It’s beautiful beyond words,” said a tourist from Karnataka, leading a group. Like the sentiment of love, the romance with the Taj Mahal will never fade or age. “You talk to any visitor, the reactions are generally positive and kind of catharctic, a memorable experience it always is. As some leaders said long back, the world is divided into two segments, one those who had seen the Taj and the unlucky ones who had not,” said tourist guide Ved Gautam. Hassles like logistics, conning by touts, and long wait apart, once a tourist has seen the
Taj Mahal, he forgets the negatives and returns with pride and joy. “And who is not touched by a love story that gave the world such a precious monument,” asks a small hotel owner of the Taj Ganj area. Though people in Agra generally feel that the Yogi government in UP has been biased against the city and its monuments, the reality is that a series of measures taken over the years have eased mobility, offering multiple choices of stay and cuisine, more attractions in the city, and comparatively cleaner surroundings. The railway stations have become userfriendly, and air connectivity with half a dozen cities and the availability of electric buses, and CNG-run autos have all helped tourism growth in Agra. Work on the Agra Metro rail project is progressing fast and will surely help bring down
“When the tourists see the Yamuna at the rear the reactions are not pleasant. Fresh water should be discharged from upstream barrages and steps taken to begin construction of the dam downstream of the Taj Mahal,” says Mukul Pandya, a passionate horticulturist of the city. “The ugly and stinking Yamuna is a grim reminder that the reality hasn’t changed much, though a thousand crores of rupees have been squandered away on fancy promises,” says Padmini Iyer of the River Connect Campaign. Green and Red insects or mysterious microbes have made permanent breeding grounds towards the riverside at several spots on the main structure. Environmentalists have identified dry Yamuna as the source of these polluting organisms, Iyer added. (Courtesy: https://www.daijiworld.com/)

Choose Wisely Adding an iron supplement is an easy way to address a host of pressing issues, but buyer beware – not all iron supplements are created equal. Even those who know they need iron may not take supplements because they are notoriously bad-tasting and can cause significant gastrointestinal distress, essentially trading one problem for another. Although few people ever think about their iron intake, assuming eating enough leafy greens or taking a multivitamin will suffice, iron deficiency is the most common nutritional shortfall globally, including in the United States, where it is estimated that 1 in 5 people need more iron to function properly. This holds true across all age ranges and physical conditions, from senior citizens to infants to performance athletes, but most notably this is the case for women of childbearing age. Why Your Iron Levels Matter Without sufficient iron, the body cannot produce enough hemoglobin – the substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen to tissues and organs, which can impact nearly every system in the body, even leading to death in the cases of extreme anemia. Iron deficiency can also exacerbate many health conditions, especially cardiac, pulmonary and circulatory problems, and it plays a critical role in conditions like restless leg syndrome, ADD/ADHD, celiac disease, and Crohn’s disease.
The supplement market is also largely unregulated, resulting in many companies producing inferior products or making unsubstantiated claims about the effectiveness of their products. So how can you find the best supplement for you and your family? The short answer is to ignore the marketing hype and trust medicine. Follow your doctors’ advice and look for an iron supplement that has been clinically proven to be safe, effective and welltolerated in all age groups. One such product is NovaFerrum, which offers a range of iron supplements for all age groups. Founded by a father whose preemie daughter refused to take the supplement she needed, NovaFerrum features a distinct chemical composition formulated to nearly eliminate the gastrointestinal side effects common in other iron supplements, a patented taste-masking technology and great-tasting flavors made from natural ingredients, like raspberries and monk fruit. Available in pharmacies and on Amazon, NovaFerrum is widely recommended by pediatricians, hematologists, gynecologists and general practitioners and has earned more

cognitive skills, such as attention, learning, and memory, such that poor sleep can make it much more difficult to cope with even relatively minor stressors and impact our ability to perceive the world accurately. And others at the University of Rochester point out that sleep drives metabolic clearance from the adult brain; in other words, it removes neurotoxic wastes (such as plaques called betaamyloids which disturb communication between various brain cells) which accumulate during the active daytime work. We adults need about seven hours of sleep each night, and switch off lights, stop reading the book, switch off TV and put our cell phones in silent mode, and have the toxins cleared.
ing (mastering a new language, or musical instrument). Now, a study in the European Heart Journal by J M Blodgett et al. from the University College London points out that diseases of heart and circulation is the major cause of death in adults.
And when we retired people sleep in the afternoon after lunch, we should do so for just about an hour and then do the brisk staircase walking and get on to exercising for one or two hours. Those who play games may also do so in the evening.
And after analysing over 15,000 people across the world, they suggest that moderate to vigorous activity offers benefits. These involve simple activities such as running, brisk staircase climbing, and brisk exercising for about an hour. Many of us do a lot of sitting at our desks at work — all day, and then at home, watching TV or using our laptops.
When you sleep, which is the best position you choose? Here, the website called Sleep Health offers the following advice. It depends on your comfort — to your left side or right. Side sleeping rather than upright can potentially help relieve pain, reduce the risk of snoring (and disturbing others), and improves spinal alignment by reducing back pain. It also allows faster waste removal (of the so-called beta amyloid bodies) from the brain. Which side to sleep on is your choice. But use a pillow, not just your arm, so as to reduce neck pain, stiffness and headaches. Using a mattress is also helpful. It provides adequate support to the back, neck, spine and legs.
Thus, improving our heart and health will involve simple activities such as the ones cited above, plus sports or swimming. In addition, eating ‘functional food’, as we mentioned in our article ‘Health benefits of functional foods’ on November 12, 2023 is good for our heart and health. Sleeping is good Researchers at Columbia University, New York point out that even sleeping well is good for our hearts. Sleep helps maintain

Jeethu Joseph And Mohanlal’s Courtroom Drama Almost Delivers A Cathartic High Half an hour into Jeethu Joseph’s Neru, almost all the cards are on the table, unlike the filmmaker’s previous outings. We know almost everything about the crime. We know the accused, and the court proceedings have started.
and used for character assassination in sequences which mirror some high profile trials. Neru is also the story of redemption of Vijayamohan (Mohanlal), a down and out lawyer who hasn’t been in court for a long time after being suspended from the bar.
No groundbreaking reveal happens in the two hours that follow, as we have come to expect in his films. Yet, it leaves one with a sense of satisfaction. The best of Jeethu’s films rely on powerful ideas, which often helped to mask the other inadequacies, even in Drishyam, where the domestic sequences before the crime were quite bland. Neru, too, has one compelling idea at its heart, the challenges faced by Sara (Anaswara Rajan), a blind rape victim, in identifying the accused and in convincing the world
that her other senses can make up for the lack of eyesight. This one idea is powerful enough to sustain the film, even when it is close to sagging. The way she identifies him is quite a story. No less is the manner in which it is ripped apart in court
Ranged against him are the powerful forces, a rich business group and their high-flying lawyer Rajasekhar (Siddique), with whom Vijayamohan has some history. After establishing the background, Jeethu, who co-wrote the script with Santhi Mayadevi (who has also acted in the film), starts the
court proceedings, which take up much of the runtime. Quite a few of the court scenes are riveting, especially the ones featuring the victim, while some others seem clumsy, like the frequent reaction shots in the courtroom of a sneering accused whenever the public prosecutor faces a challenge or of people looking suitably impressed when the prosecutor scores a point, and of a lawyer frequently prompting the witnesses without getting noticed. The constant shifts to television chatter to further explain the courtroom proceedings also appear as a downer. Some passing references to Drishyam are present as well. The writing decision to let Sara have almost as much role to play in the fight as the lawyer, hits the target. Her character is a world away
from the silent victims in our movies, on behalf of whom brave men fought. Anaswara Rajan aces the role, playing it with a lot of conviction. Mohanlal performs in understated manner, bringing a certain shift in dialogue delivery, making it sound more natural than in his recent films. It was a joy to see him in form after quite a long time, although it is still not a patch on the best of his performances. After the forgettable 12th Man and the passable Drishyam 2, Jeethu has found his mojo in Neru. The entire act of chipping away at the lies and obfuscations of a powerful defendant and navigating the sometimes torturous process of seeking justice, which forms the better part of the film, almost delivers a cathartic high. Shah Rukh Khan And Rajkumar Hirani Deliver A Drama That Delights And Drags In Equal Measure Early in Dunki, a simplistic but heartwarming take on the poor illegal immigrants from Punjab who make dangerous journeys in a desperate search for greener pastures, a set of hopefuls find a way to crack the English test. They memorise a paragraph by rote and decide to parrot it to the examiners by just changing the name of the topic. Inadvertently, the long scene with diminishing returns becomes a metaphor for the sameness that surrounds Rajkumar Hirani’s storytelling. Over the years, he has engaged the audience with almost the same story structure, but has always managed to imbue it with a beating heart and a smiling face. In Dunki, Hirani’s first and longawaited collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, the purpose and social concern is again laudable, but the storytelling feels facile and laboured after a point, largely because Hirani doesn’t want to test newer ways to put his point across. The spontaneity that we associate with his work is sadly missing. Set in a small town in Punjab, Dunki goes into flashback to tell the
tale of four characters with modest means who want to immigrate to London to get over their difficulties in life. When they are about to give up, Hardy (Shah Rukh), an ex-armyman, comes into their lives to make their dream a reality by taking a circuitous, illegal route. Along the way, he develops a soft corner for Manu (Taapsee Pannu) only to realise that her wish to cross over to a foreign land is stronger than her love for the man who gave her the belief.
tackled in Punjabi films and the news pages are full of first-hand accounts of the perilous journeys that the so-called ‘donkeys’ make. So when the film presents the challenges as a novelty, it doesn’t come as a surprise. They feel tepid in picturisation and we keep looking for a little more nuance and a little more poignancy. The feeling becomes stronger when the end credits show some facts and figures superimposed on some heart-rending images of illegal immigrants.
The theme of illegal immigration may be relatively new for the Hindi film industry, but it has been
Hirani always puts emotional logic ahead of conventional logic and uses situational humour to great ef-
fect. Here, he does it again, but the results are not as consistently riveting and charismatic as they have been in the past. The emotional swell does overwhelm you two or three times, but the seamless unpredictability of the narrative that has been the hallmark of Hirani and Abhijat Joshi’s writing is missing here. More importantly, in the light-hearted first half, the jokes around English and Englishmen start feeling repetitive. And, some, like one around the national anthem, don’t land properly. Perhaps, Hirani has chosen England over the the US and Canada because he could use the colonial connection, but in the present scenario the illegal immigration to the US and Canada is more newsworthy and relatable. Once the dust settles down, one could pretty much guess where the film is headed. The narrative sags in the middle overs. Things look up in the second half when the film finally moves from the comic set pieces, most of which are part of the trailer, to convey the larger message behind illegal migration. But after a couple of powerful scenes, it feels like the writers
are straining to take the film to a fitting conclusion. The musical tapestry, particularly the combination of Javed Akhtar and Sonu Nigam in ‘Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se’ and Varun Grover and Javed Ali’s chemistry in ‘Chal Ve Vatna’, gives goosebumps. Shah Rukh surrenders himself to Hirani’s universe and the way he evocatively puts nation over asylum in a courtroom sequence, makes a strong socio-political statement and is one of the highlights of the film. The problem is that the love story between Hardy and Manu doesn’t create much magic. Taapsee fails to cast the spell that the story requires for the boy to wait for her for 25 years. The supporting cast is solid, particularly Vicky Kaushal, who reprises a staple character in Hirani’s universe, earlier essayed by Jimmy Shergil and Ali Fazal in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and 3 Idiots respectively. Vikram Kocchar and Anil Grover are efficient but Boman Irani isn’t tested much. Overall, not the best of Hirani, but Dunki has just about enough to make you chuckle and churn.
