Austin Tamil School’s 5th Annual Graduation
(Continued From Page 01) On May 21, 2017, the Austin Tamil School (ATS) hosted its 5th annual graduation ceremony to congratulate all of their students. The event was spectacular and unique in that each student demonstrated a cultural and/or language based talent that they had learned in their classes during the school
year. A variety of performances ranging from poetry reading to tongue
twister recitals were displayed to the crowded auditorium filled with an attentive and supportive audience of parents and friends. The ATS also encouraged its students to try out different skills by having students co-host the event with a few adults. Each level performed a different talent, starting with Tamil rhymes, then moving on to Tamil rapping, and ending with various versions of the famous Tenali Raman skit. Students recited the Thirukural and with a unexpected twist, provided the audience with the meaning of each Thirukural passage. The ATS graduation also featured a student speaking portion in which students shared what they felt that the ATS was about.
“To learn about Tamil happily”, “so that teachers will fix our mistakes so that we can learn from them”, and “to learn about the culture, customs, and traditions and not just the language” were some of the translated responses from the chutti kiddos - as the entire event was spoken in Tamil.
UT Austin Tamil Professor, Sankaran Radhakrishnan, is working with the ATS board to establish a program that allows students to
both modern and classical styles. Within the Tamil language, students can learn both conversational or spoken Tamil as well as written Tamil. The Tamil school is open to students from K-12th grade and is taught by volunteers who are native Tamil speakers. ATS is cur-

robotics. Another unique feature of ATS, which is an up and coming program is its UT tie up partnership.
This event also served as a gathering of the Indian families in the area to come together to celebrate their children’s accomplishments as well as socialize, allowing the community to come closer together. The founding director, Mahendran Nagarajan, was among the speakers at this event who detailed some of the information about the ATS program for students. “We have two locations now. One in North Austin and one in South Austin.” Nagarajan said. This allows students from all parts of Austin to attend classes at ATS and increase the number of students that speak Tamil in the Austin area. In the end of the day, the goal to know the culture and language as it is a part of each individual. The ATS also offers enrichment programs in addition to its Tamil classes, which includes classes like

The Spring Fest was attended by over a hundred Indian families based in and around Austin.
GAMA had organized a veritable feast of delicious dishes in an ‘Uttar-Dakshin’ theme.
North Indian delicacies such as bhel puri, pani puri, paav bhaji and biryani perfectly complemented the South Indian - specifically
Keralite - dishes such as kappa and fish curry, red chili chutney and cold buttermilk sambharam. Of course, since barbecue is a must for every spring picnic, GAMA made sure there were plenty of barbecued chicken to go around! Apart from all the good food, the guests young and old were entertained throughout the day with various games and contests such as musical chair, water balloons, soccer and volleyball, along with tongue twisters and riddles. GAMA president Shankar Chandramohan and vice president Sivaprasad Valappil distributed prizes to the winners.

The countdown to prom is on and there’s a lot to do.

From finding the perfect date, locating the right ride, getting the dream dress or tux, and coordinating hair, makeup and accessories... it can be a little overwhelming... and pricey.
After formalwear, you may spend another $218 on hair, makeup and accessories, according to Seventeen magazine.
However, your prom focus shouldn’t be on how much money is spent -- but rather on the memories you can make.
Luckily, with so many online videos, you can learn to do almost anything yourself -- including achieving salonquality hair and makeup.
So instead of rolling out the cash this season, roll up your sleeves. With a little preparation and creativity, you can “make” it a prom to remember for years to come. “The Promposal” “Promposals” are elaborate ways to ask your prospective date to the dance. In recent years, students have spent an average of $324 on the promposal alone, according to a Visa Survey -- going all out by using things like food, handmade posters and even pets to pop the big question.

By purchasing flowers at a grocery store or using fabric flowers, you can even make your own corsage. The Memories Instead of pricey professional photos, capture memories by making an online scrapbook. Digital Scrapbooking is a great tool for layouts and ideas. Then, use stickers, cardstock, washi tape, markers and other embellishments, such as textured or glitter craft tapes, to make the pages something you’ll cherish. Even freshly pedicured feet can get rough and dry pretty fast.
• Soak and Soften:
To extend the life of your pedicure, try using a foot cream that both exfoliates and moisturizes. For example, GOLD BOND Ultimate Pedi Smooth contains an exfoliating complex of four hydroxy acids and seven intensive moisturizers, a special formulation that has been clinically shown to exfoliate and smooth dry, rough skin.
The Look Your prom outfit should pop, fit well and express your personality. With prom-goers spending $231 or more on a dress and $184 on a tuxedo, according to Seventeen magazine, you may want an alternative to high-priced, traditional prom clothing and accessories.
Over the last 17 years, nearly 8,000 students have participated, and nearly half a million dollars has been awarded, in the Duck brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest.
Finally, DIYing accessories, such as jewelry and a clutch, can also keep money in your wallet.

Fill a tub or basin with warm water and essential oils. Then, relax while you soak your feet for 10 minutes to soften calluses and dead skin. For a clarifying, antifungal soak, add a few drops of tea tree oil. For a moisturizing soak, add 1/3 cup of olive oil. • Exfoliate and Moisturize:
Remove any excess lotion or old polish from nails before painting on a fresh coat. Apply a base coat, two coats of your favorite polish and a top coat for maximum longevity. Then let nails dry for 10 minutes or more before slipping into shoes. • Beware of Blisters: As temperatures rise, feet often sweat and swell in shoes, causing
chafing and blisters. Before you head outside, protect your feet by applying adhesive bandages to spots that are likely to rub. You can also go a step further to minimize irritation by choosing the right shoes for the weather. Opt for a more structured sandal on hot, humid days and break out your strappy sandals or heels on cooler days. More information about skin care and innovative foot products can be found at GOLDBONDUltimate. com. There is no need to hide your feet in the warm weather months. With a bit of care, you can get and keep that soft, smooth, sandalready feeling all season long. (StatePoint)

Make A Difference – Life Is Good By Vidya Kumar Let me tell you what happens after 25 years of married life – you run out of conversation and either you talk about paying bills, or what is cooking in the kitchen or at the most maybe talk about children and friends. Otherwise, the conversation is bare minimum and there is nothing interesting to talk with the partner. In the last few months thanks to Trump now there is animated discussion once I am home about what Trump did for the day. Did you see his tweet? Did you read about the article on Russian connection? The list is endless and suddenly there is great energy between us. We eagerly wait to meet and once we are together the conversation is endless. It is as if there is a new interest with

Repatriation Of Remains Of The U.S World War-II Unaccounted For Personnel The U.S. Department of Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA) conducted field activities in Arunachal Pradesh, India, from November 1 - December 14, 2016, in search of remains of and artifacts associated with the U.S. World War-II unaccounted-for personnel. The DPAA team recovered evidence that was subsequently examined by a Joint Forensic Review Committee comprising both DPAA and Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) members. On December 07, 2016, the Committee determined that the evidence was possibly correlated to the U.S. WW-II service members

Hot For Summer: Create A Perfect Outdoor Escape In Your Backyard
If there’s anything better than heating up the grill and chilling drinks with close friends late into a summer evening, it’s decorating the space in which it all takes place. As with all things summer, refreshing your outdoor space calls for a simple, relaxed approach. Here are a few ideas for making a quick splash.

5 Essential Travel Hacks For On-The-Go Parents
Getting from point A to point B with young kids is an adventure within itself. Whether by plane, train or automobile, parents are on the search for ways to make family travel a little less stressful.
as entertainment: Nothing can set off a massive meltdown like hunger. Have a variety of food options
To help, Sandy Chang, mom of two and founder of SandyALaMode. com, is offering her five best travel hacks. These hacks won’t guarantee a tantrum-free trip, but they will help parents feel as prepared as possible for the journey ahead.
If you’re flying, bring empty bottles to fill with milk or water before boarding so your family can stay hydrated on the plane. “I always make sure the kids are eating and drinking at takeoff and landing to help prevent their ears from hurting,” says Chang.
• Save space in the suitcase. Pack a few essential clothing items that can easily be mixed and matched. For example, nights can get chilly, so take one cute sweater that works well with all your child’s outfits.
• Bring a lightweight, compact stroller. Little kids have little legs that frequently get tired, which is why a stroller is necessary gear when traveling with children.
The same idea applies to shoes. Opt for neutral colored shoes that match everything, instead of multiple pairs to coordinate with each outfit. • Pack snacks that can also serve
snacks that add an element of fun. For example, certain cereals can be used for a stacking game, or turned into a necklace and then eaten. Fill a pouch with at least one unexpected treat for a fun surprise.
at the ready, and bring less-mess
Make sure you choose a stroller that is lightweight since
you will be opening and closing it many times and lugging it to different places. “The Baby Jogger City Tour stroller has been a great option for us. In addition to the backpack-style carry bag that helps keep hands free to tend to little ones, it folds up small enough to fit into many airline overhead compartments,” says Chang. She also notes that, despite its compact frame, it doesn’t compromise on storage space underneath the stroller. The stroller’s UV50+ sun canopy with built-in extension helps protect babies on sunny days, and the durable wheels swivel for greater maneuverability, which is especially helpful in crowded airports. To learn more visit BabyJogger.com. • Stay organized with plastic bags. Plastic bags can help you separate clean and dirty clothes as you go, and makes doing laundry much
easier after your trip. In the car or on the plane, keep a plastic bag with extra clothing nearby. Having an extra set of clothes in an easily accessible spot will be your saving grace when there are spills or accidents on-the-go. • Ask older siblings to help. If they are old enough, kids can lend a hand and help take some of the burden off parents. Before the trip, let children choose a backpack which they can use throughout the vacation to carry their own daily supplies and snacks. Many kids love chipping in. “Austin absolutely loves pushing Vivian around in her stroller. I think it gives him a sense of control, and it’s just fun,” says Chang. Traveling with children is never easy, but having a few wellplanned hacks will help ensure a smoother journey and more fun for the entire family. (StatePoint)

5 Tips For Balancing Family, Work And Education
It’s an age-old conundrum. To advance professionally, often one must go back to school.

Figure out where your “pain points” are and create your own support networks.
However, earning a degree might seem like an insurmountable challenge because of the demands of a current job.
Form a babysitting share with other parents in your classes to alleviate the financial burden of childcare or create a virtual study group to prepare for exams.
Experts say that more education is not only advantageous, but downright necessary in certain industries, particularly where technology is changing the playing field. For instance, Hannah Hughes, Dean of Nursing at Strayer University points out that, “The impact of technology on healthcare continues to evolve the practice of nursing, and there is currently a technology skills gap among some nurses. Today’s nurses should be preparing themselves to operate in this dynamic technologically-rich environment.”

• Identify short study windows. Maximize downtime whenever you have it. Have an infant? Are your children enrolled in sports? Read assignments during practices or at halftimes. On the job? Study on your lunch break. • Select a program wisely. Look for programs designed to make it easy for busy, working people to earn degrees.
New Ways To Save And Enjoy Your Photos People are taking more photos than ever before, of friends, family, vacations and their food.
Unfortunately, in the age of social media, our photos are often experienced in a fleeting way.
And while they don’t always like to admit it, they are also taking selfies.
Consider the following tips for making your memories last longer. • Back up your data. Consider ap-
In the event your device is lost, stolen or malfunctioning, you won’t lose your memories on top of the logistical headache and financial expense of replacing or repairing your hardware. • Sort your files. Most programs will sort your images by date. You may also wish to tag your images and use thematic folders for better organization. This will help you find exactly what you’re looking for when the time comes to create that slideshow or craft that scrapbook. • Share your images. Share your images in a beautiful slideshow presentation.
But with all this emphasis on taking photos, you’d think that people would pay more attention to how they store and enjoy their memories for later.
plying settings to your mobile device that immediately back up your photos to your computer and to the cloud.
New features on today’s projectors make it a snap. For example, MobiShow, a feature of Casio’s LampFree Slim projectors, enables users to make presentations wirelessly via any smart-
phone, computer or mobile device equipped with wireless LAN capabilities. The XJ-A257 for example, weighs five pounds, making it a great portable projector and an easy way to share your images any time. • Print them out. When is the last time you actually printed an image you took on a mobile device? These days, it’s easier and quicker than ever before to print your favorite photos. Many retailers make it convenient to send a digital collection of photos to be quickly processed into standard prints and keepsakes like mugs, calendars and apparel.
For example, Strayer University offers the flexibility to learn online or in a classroom, students are matched with personal Success Coaches to help them balance responsibilities, and classes begin four times a year, offering degreeseekers greater flexibility. For these reasons, their online RN to BSN degree program, for example, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, can be a good fit for working nurses with demanding shifts. To learn more, visit www.Strayer. edu/bsn. “Selecting a program that understands the actual demands of your field and the evolving priorities of your employer, can help you apply your knowledge now and meet professional goals later,” says Hughes. • Stay up-to-date in your field. Be a more efficient, successful student and professional by staying current on your evolving industry. For example, nurses can brush up on healthcare informatics, as well as understand how changes to healthcare policy will impact the way they deliver care. • Laugh often. All work and no play doesn’t make Jack a dull boy – it makes him tired and ineffectual. Take time for loved ones who make you laugh and keep up with your favorite funny podcasts. It’s helpful to keep your sense of humor as you take on another responsibility.
In a time when photography permeates all that we do, don’t forget to store your images safely and to take the time to enjoy them.
Whether you’re a teacher, a nurse, work for a company, or are in business for yourself, an advanced degree can offer you greater job satisfaction and earning potential, and the right program and study habits can make it a manageable challenge.

According to data from The Pew Charitable Trusts, 2.9 million grandparents were raising their grandchildren in 2015 compared with 2.5 million in 2005. Oftentimes, grandparents become primary caregivers due to unforeseen circumstances. Here are three things those taking on this responsibility should consider. Protect their Financial Future A recent study found 30 percent of all households don’t have life insurance, according to LIMRA, a life insurance research organization. Grandparents should be sure this coverage is up to date. They might also consider purchasing term insurance -- life insurance issued for a limited period of time. More affordable than a whole life policy, it provides financial security for the golden years, helps supplement retirement income and can assist with final expenses. A term life insurance policy can even help pay off a mortgage -- so grandparents have peace of mind knowing that dependents have a roof over their heads -- and can

To create a safe living environment for younger children, secure large furniture to walls, purchase safety gates for staircases, and install outlet covers, corner protectors, security locks and appliance latches.
• Maintain your air conditioner. The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest, and perhaps most important, maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely.
It might also be a good time to update in-home safety features for grandparents, too.
For more complicated tasks, you may wish to hire a professional technician.
Handrails provide better grip on staircases, and anti-slip mats and grab bars in the bathroom can add extra stability.
Likewise, you’ll want to be sure your car’s air conditioner is in good working order, particularly before a major road trip or heat wave.
Promote Smarter Driving
• Stay informed with accurate weather information.
As teens get behind the wheel, encourage them to drive safely. A 2015 statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says six teens die every day in car crashes in the US, and this is the number one killer of teens. Distracted driving is the cause of 58 percent of teen-involved traffic crashes, according to the National Organization for Youth Safety. Remind grandkids about the dangers of texting, using apps and
Accurate weather information is one of the best ways to make informed decisions and be prepared for daily outdoor activities, family vacations and travel plans. Consider a source recognized for its superior accuracy – the AccuWeather app can be a good go-to resource not only this summer, but year-round, to help keep you safe. It features AccuWeather MinuteCast, an exclusive minute-byminute precipitation forecast for
the next two hours specific to your exact GPS location. Plus, the app’s AccuWeather RealFeel feature lets you know how it actually feels outside so you can properly plan for outdoor summer activities and the day ahead – from what to pack to what to wear. If you’re constantly on the go, don’t worry, because the app delivers severe weather push alert notifications that can help keep you safe and better prepared for anything that comes your way. The award-winning AccuWeather app is available on all of Android mobile devices, as well as on iOS, for free. • Know what to wear. During the summer, lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make all the difference to your comfort. The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the cooler you will be. • Schedule outdoor activities carefully. During periods of intense heat, stay indoors and, if at all possible, remain in an air-conditioned
location. If your home does not have air conditioning, consider going to a shopping mall or public library for a few hours – spending time in air conditioning will help your body stay cooler once you go back out into the elements. Limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when it’s cooler. • Stay hydrated. Summer fun often means being outdoors, but listen to your body and take breaks to rest, rehydrate and cool off. Bring water or a sports drink with you when you are exercising, at the pool or even just making your way around town. Make sure to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can quickly dehydrate you. With up-to-the-minute knowledge at your fingertips and the right preparation, you will be ready to cope with heat and all weather conditions the summer season brings. (StatePoint)

Menopause is often associated with troublesome symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, yet even more serious health issues may be part of this life stage, such as heart disease. The North American Menopause Society estimates that 6,000 US women reach menopause every day. That amounts to more than 2 million per year.
“Women experience a number of changes during menopause due to shifting hormones and lower levels of estrogen. Hot flashes, night sweats and fatigue can interfere with everyday activities.
These symptoms can be severe and can occur for several years as the body adjusts to the reduced level of estrogen. We know that fluctuating hormones can also contribute to increased risk of heart disease and it’s important to take steps to manage that risk during menopause,” said nationally renowned natural health physician and author, Dr. Fred Pescatore.
There are several ways for women to manage menopause symptoms and heart health risks, said Dr. Pescatore. Start with Your Diet A healthy lifestyle typically starts with a nutritious diet and this becomes even more important during
menopause.
“For women experiencing menopause symptoms, I recommend adopting a diet filled with more vegetables, lean protein, nuts and seeds to support a healthier lifestyle and a healthier heart,” said Dr. Pescatore. Stick with an Exercise Routine One of the best things you can do to help your body and mind adjust to shifting hormone levels during menopause is to maintain an active lifestyle. “Just 30 minutes of cardio each day can really make a difference. Pre-Eid Zohra Alam Exibition in Austin

The exhibition was timed with ‘Choti’ Eid more formally known as Eid ul Fitr, a religious celebration in which the Muslim community goes out of it’s way to celebrate, socialize and look glamorous.
Zohra Alam sent 70 individual pieces.
Cheema’s favorite piece was a short blue shirt with bell sleeves.
65 were sold and many orders placed for ‘Bari’ Eid, or Eid ul Adha that happens two months and ten days after Eid ul Fitr.
The Austin Community arrived in batches to see the exhibition. Friends came together or timed their arrival.
With the dramatic rise in the South Asian population, such one time exhibitions have become common right before festivals and people come from as far as San Antonio and Houston searching for a well known designer.
Prices ranged from $110 to $275. Cheema went on to describe the pieces that arrived.
Most went back with at least one piece.

it was Ramadan, a month of charity and reflection. Anjum Hanafi, a fifteen-years Austin resident who works for Rodan + Fields, was not new to this plan. She had organized a similar event in 2016 when she and her family and friends distributed 70 home-cooked meals to the homeless. The meals were gone in five minutes! A friend could not cook had
“People who participate appreciate the opportunity to help,” said Hanafi. This year, Hanafi decided to spread the word about the plan so that more people could either participate by making a small donation or volunteer on the day. The word got out through social media and donations started coming in. Hanafi raised about a thousand dollars! When the Wendy’s establishment on Ranch Road 620 and Volente found out that the meals that Hanafi was ordering would be distributed to the home-
less, they wanted to take part in the charity and offered a considerable discount. Hanafi and her group bought 100 meals from there, 200 water bottles, cookies, bug spray, and sunscreen with the funds they had raised and met on 8th and Neches. Hanafi gave full credit to the volunteers and the donors. Shadia Igram, a board member and treasurer at Connecther.org, bought the sunscreen. Hira Mohsin, a parent at Peace Academy bought the cold water. Ambereen Ahmed, an artist based in Austin, printed the messages for each meal. UT student Saba Mashkoor and her brother Ali volunteered to distribute. Parents brought kids to help and what resulted was a block party with only good will to all.
The meals went quickly. Life is hard for homeless people and any good will they can get from the Austin community is well appreciated. Many men and women sat down on street curbside and ate
their meals right there thanking the volunteers for their generosity. The real inspiration behind the plan was an AJ+ video Hanafi saw during the Ramadan of 2016, which showed Rachid Boulsane, a French Muslim, distribute free meals to the homeless in Paris, France, during Ramadan. As soon as he would break his fast, he would drive around with prepackaged meals to find homeless on the streets. Hanafi was so inspired that she decided to plan something similar in Austin. Hanafi said, “Each meal was carefully packed with a message for the less fortunate homeless, talking about Ramadan. The note ended, “with all our prayers and warm wishes from your Muslim friends in Austin.” “To me [the homeless] are giving us the opportunity to do something good and be the best version of yourself,” said Hanafi. Hanafi plans to hold another Feed it Forward event with the money left over.
A client came from San Antonio with her daughters and bought 9 pieces in one go for an upcoming wedding. A lady from Dallas bought six. Others called with Instagram photos as reference and placed orders. They all wanted to know if Zohra Alam would showcase in in Austin again. Cheema thinks there will be another exhibition before Eid ul Adha. With three years experience in showcasing and placing orders with Zohra Alam, Cheema is quite an expert in noticing Pakistani fashion trends in USA. “People are much more aware of trends. Austin has become open to new ideas and people love Eid related themes,” said Cheema. “I am sure I’ll see a lot of her designs on Eid parties,” smiled Cheema proudly. To view of full line of the designer, please go to www.zohraalam.com or on Instagram @zohra.alam. Cheema is more than happy to help the Austin community place orders. With eager buyers, one would only expect more of Zohra Alam in Austin.

INDIA SIGNS SPEEDY ENTRY PROGRAM
Austin South Asian | July 2017
Shah Rukh Khan Clocks 25 Years in Bollywood
(Continued from page 1) President Donald Trump welcomed India’s entry into the International Expedited Traveler Initiative, also known as the Global Entry Program, saying it would facilitate closer business and educational ties between Indian citizens and the U.S. The India-U.S. joint statement, issued after talks between Trump and Modi, said the U.S. president applauded the entrepreneurship and innovation of Indians and Indian-Americans, which he said have directly benefited both nations. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Swiss and U.K. citizens are also part of the program. On landing at select airports,
program members enter the U.S. through automatic kiosks, instead of lining up to clear immigration with an immigration officer. At these airports, members proceed to the Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk then issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs him or her to the baggage claim and the exit. The U.S. airports that participate in the Global Entry program include all major airports, including New York, Newark, Washington, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, Miami and Seattle. A traveler at any of these airports
can clear U.S. immigration, making their connecting flight from the Global Entry participant airport to all others in the U.S. a domestic flight. Along with the Global Entry airports in the U.S., airports in Dublin, Ireland; Vancouver, Canada; Toronto, Canada; and Abu Dhabi participate in the program. The caveat is that the travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interviews before enrolment, the CBP website says. While Global Entry’s goal is to improve immigration and entry times, it does not exclude members from further screening, for which they may be selected when entering the U.S.

Celebrating The 4th With Fireworks? What To Know For many Americans, Independence Day is incomplete without fireworks. But it’s important to keep in mind that the most spectacular displays are those that are conducted safely. Whether you’re lighting sparklers, setting off roman candles or putting on a full show, obey all the laws of your jurisdiction. And if you are attending a fireworks show, there are still some basic safety tips to follow as a spectator. All those lighting fireworks should wear safety goggles to protect themselves, and spectators should be an appropriate distance away. And remember, while that ice-cold beer might be tempting on a hot July day, it’s important to save it for after the fireworks if you are a participant. Hearing loss is permanent and babies’ ears are particularly sensitive to loud noises. Parents should bring baby-sized noise canceling headphones to the celebration. Also, be mindful that many dogs get anxious during fireworks. If you can leave your dog at home in a soundproof room, that may be best. If dogs are along for the celebration, be sure to keep them on leashes so they don’t run away from the sound. (SPM Wire)

It’s often said that the First Emperor of Qin built the Great Wall. Actually he was not the first to build it. See below:
The Great Wall was not just a wall. It was an integrated military defensive system with watchtowers for surveillance, fortresses for com-

Fortresses were built at important/ vulnerable access points (passes), such as Shanhai Pass Fortress, Juyong Pass Fortress, and Jiayu Pass Fortress. There were many archery windows and gates on the forts. The fortress gatehouses were the strongest and most impregnable structures on the Great Wall. Panchatantra Tales - The Elephant And The Sparrow A couple of sparrows lived happily in their nest on top of a huge tree in a jungle. The female sparrow had
laid her eggs in the nest and they were expecting their newborns soon. On a particular day, unable to bear the heat of the summer sun, an elephant went berserk. He crashed into all trees in his way. On his way, he broke the branches of the tree that supported the nest of the sparrow couple. As the branches fell, so did the nest and all the newly laid eggs smashed against the ground. Although the sparrows managed to escape by flying away, they were heart-broken to see that they had lost the eggs. The female sparrow began to cry and wail loudly. A woodpecker, who was at a little distance, was touched by cries. He went to her and said, “Dear good sparrow! There is nothing you can do by crying. What is destined to happen, will happen for sure.” The female sparrow replied, “That is indeed true. But all my children were killed by this wicked elephant, this is also true. We had done no harm to him.” “If you consider yourself to be a friend”, continued the female sparrow, “Please suggest me a way to destroy this elephant and avenge the death of my children”. “So I will”, replied the woodpecker, “I have a fly as a friend. Let us go and ask for her help to destroy this cruel elephant”. Thus, the woodpecker and the female sparrow went to meet the fly. The woodpecker explained, “My friend,
please meet this sparrow. She is a dear friend of mine. Her eggs were destroyed by a wicked elephant; please help us find a way to destroy this cruel elephant.” “I will certainly help you”, the fly said after hearing the events, “How can I be your friend, and yet not help you when you need me. I have a frog as a good friend, let us seek his help to destroy this wicked elephant.” Thus, the female sparrow, woodpecker and the fly went to the frog, and explained him of all the events for which they had come to him for help. The old frog said after hearing everything, “The elephant is big, but he is alone. What can this elephant do, if we work together to destroy him? I have a plan!” He explained, “Fly! When the sun is scorching, your task would be to buzz in his ears. When he closes his eyes in sheer ecstasy, the woodpecker’s task would be to peck his eyes and make him blind. In this scorching summer, he will certainly search for water, but being blinded already he will not be able to do so. I will then sit on the edge of the nearby pit and croak at the top of my voice.” He continued, “When the thirsty elephant hears me, he will think there is a pond or lake nearby and follow my voice. And when he does so, he will fall into the pit and perish. This way, we can avenge the death of the sparrow’s children!” The others agreed to the plan, and organized to do their part of the tasks as laid by the old frog. They executed their tasks successfully, and the elephant fell into a muddy pit and was severely wounded. The wise indeed say: Even the low and humble achieve results when they work together

If you qualify for a loan, he or she will provide you with a pre-approval letter stating how much home you can afford and the maximum amount you are qualified to borrow. Having this letter can help show the seller that you are a committed and qualified buyer. Keep in mind that the amount your lender is willing to lend is not always how much you should borrow. You should borrow only what you feel you can comfortably repay through monthly mortgage payments. Wait to take this step until you are actually on the hunt, as pre-approvals are usually good for only a limited time. Austin ISD Board Calls For November Bond Election $1.05 billion proposal includes 16 new or modernized schools, no tax rate increase Austin ISD trustees tonight called a $1.05 billion bond proposal that includes re-envisioning 21st-century learning spaces for 16 schools and districtwide projects, with no tax rate increase. The proposal includes districtwide projects to address facility deficiencies as well as to support innovative programming such as the district’s career launch program. The basis for the recommendation was the recently approved Facility Master Plan, developed during a twoyear, citizen-driven process led by the Facilities and Bond Planning Advisory Committee. FABPAC gathered extensive community input throughout the FMP process, including 38 meetings, five community engagement series, more than 500 engagement opportunities and more than 5,000 single pieces of feedback from community members. All of this fed into the bond process, and engagement continues. The FMP process identified nearly $4 billion in needs, and the bond is the first step in addressing those. Proposed bond projects balance those needs throughout the district, focusing on the “worst first” areas. A complete list of projects will be available at aisdfuture.com. the same through the life of your loan, as will your monthly payments. While this can offer some peace of mind, it’s important to know that such loans tend to have higher interest rates because the lender isn’t protected against a rise in its costs over the course of your loan. On an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) however, the interest rate may re-set every one, three or five years based on the movement of a specific index and the terms of the loan. Homebuyers may have low interest rates when they first take out their mortgage loans, but the rates may increase over the loan term. If your rate changes at a reset, then your monthly payment will change too. For a full run-down on all things homebuying, visit myhome.freddiemac.com. One of the most important aspects of homebuying is getting a handle on how much home you can afford. Do your research before you begin househunting, so you can be well-informed throughout the process. (StatePoint)

City Of Austin Economic Development Department To Seek Council Approval For Proposed Agent Of Change/Outdoor Music Venue Permit On June 15
AUSTIN, Texas – June 5, 2017 The City of Austin Music and Entertainment Division within the Economic Development Department announced today that the Agent of Change policy and revised music venue permit is scheduled to go to Council for consideration on June 15, 2017. The draft is has been provided to Mayor and City Council in combination with the attached memo and is available for review at: http:// www.austintexas.gov/edims/pio/ document.cfm?id=277785 The agent of change is a policy proposal that promotes compatibility between outdoor music venues and residential and hotel development by requiring the new use moving into the area to be re-
sponsible for compatibility related to sound, and to build accordingly to manage the sound impact. At the heart of the Agent of Change policy is the requirement for a development project that includes a residential or hotel component within 600’ of a permitted outdoor music venue to acknowledge the proximity of the venue and commit to building standards that mitigate the existing sound conditions in the area.
disclose to the buyer or lessee the proximity of the nearby residential, hotel or permitted outdoor music venue.
and interested parties to the City Manager, and adds a preliminary hearing for venues prior to a permit being suspended or revoked.
The proposed revisions to the existing Outdoor Music Venue permit complements this policy by streamlining the administrative process for venues, clarifying the City Code to make it easier to interpret and enforce, and serving as the trigger for the Agent of Change requirements.
The recommendations proposed for City Council consideration represent a balanced approach to addressing critical issues that have lacked attention or gone unresolved for years.
This requirement goes both ways, and is also required of a new outdoor music venue being developed within 600’ of residential or hotel uses.
The permit process is streamlined by bringing all functions associated with issuance of the permit within the Music Office instead of involving two separate City departments.
When a property owner sells or leases a property that required the acknowledgement, they must
The revised permit also extends the term of the permit from one to two years, directs appeals from venues
While the Economic Development Department understands this set of recommendations does not address all concerns expressed by residents and music venue owners, staff seeks City Council’s support and adoption of these recommendations to promote clarity in the City Code, create efficiencies, and maintain a commitment to compatibility between music venues and residents.

How To Cash In On The Gig Economy
There’s an exciting career revolution taking place for those who want to call their own shots, set their own schedules and control their destinies. Say hello to the “gig economy,” a booming new job market. Nowadays more and more Americans are becoming a part of this employment shift. In fact, according to a CareerBuilder survey, 29 percent of workers have some sort of side hustle, especially millennials -- 44 percent of 25-34 year-olds and 39 percent of those between 18-24 report having a side gig. According to a Princeton University study, the percentage of workers engaged in alternative work arrangements rose from 10.7 percent in February 2005 to 15.8 percent in late 2015, while employment in traditional jobs rose by only 0.4 percent during the same period. These days, being a freelancer, consultant or independent contractor might mean selling goods through a company like Arbonne or running a home-based business.

Many personal insurance policies don’t cover incidents that happen when you are being paid to do a job. Modi In US: Dinner With President Donald Trump, Red Carpet Welcome For PM (Continued From Page 01) Trump declared he was “true friend” of India and said relations between the two largest democracies have never been better. But there were some tensions in the inaugural meeting between the two populist leaders. On trade, Trump demanded fewer barriers for American companies exporting to India. Speaking in the Rose Garden after their talks, Trump said: “Both our nations have been struck by the evils of terrorism, and we are both determined to destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them. We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism.” Modi, a Hindu nationalist but also leader of a nation with nearly 175 million Muslims, did not use the same, charged terminology. He stressed the importance of “doing away” with terrorist sanctuaries and safe havens, apparently reflecting Indian concerns about militants based in Pakistan, India’s historical archrival. He said the U.S. and India will enhance intelligencesharing. Hours before Modi’s arrival, the State Department imposed sanctions on Syed Salahuddin, the Pakistan-based leader of Hizbul Mujahideen, the main rebel group that fights against Indian control in the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir. India’s foreign ministry hailed the move. Trump has so far focused on outreach to China, India’s other strategic rival, as he looks to Beijing to rein in nuclear-armed North Korea. But Washington and New Delhi
share concerns about China’s rise as a military power that have underpinned increasingly close relations in the past decade. The Trump administration says it want to provide India with improved defense technology. The State Department June 26 approved the $365 million sale of a C-17 military transport aircraft to India. The administration is also set to offer a $2 billion sale of U.S.made unarmed drones to help in surveillance of the Indian Ocean. Although Modi’s two-day Washington visit, which began June 25, is lower-key than his previous three trips to the U.S. since he took office in 2014, it has included plenty of face-time with Trump. Modi later joined the president and first lady for dinner – the first dinner Trump has hosted for a foreign dignitary at the White House, although he has hosted the leaders of Japan and China at his resort in Florida. Trump and Modi share a populist streak and a knack for social media, but their economic nationalist agendas could clash. While Trump champions the idea of “America First” and wants to stop the migration of jobs overseas, Modi has his own drive to boost manufacturing at home, dubbed “Make in India.” India is among the nations singled out by the Trump administration for their trade surpluses with the U.S., and it is also reviewing a visa program used heavily by skilled Indian workers. The U.S. deficit in goods and services with India last year was about $30 billion. “It is important that barriers be removed to the export of U.S. goods
into your markets, and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country,” Trump said. But Trump also lauded Modi’s economic stewardship, and the praise was mutual. Modi, who invited the president and his family to visit India, extolled Trump’s leadership qualities. He said the president’s “vast and successful experience in the business world will lend an aggressive and forward-looking
huddin shows that Washington is willing to work closely with New Delhi on terrorism-related matters, although it remains to be seen if that signals a tougher policy toward Pakistan. India accuses Pakistan-based militants of launching attacks on its soil. The two leaders voiced a joint interest in bringing stability to Afghanistan, where India has committed $3 billion in aid since 2001. However, in their public remarks, they skirted the contentious issue of climate change. New Delhi has been irked by Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris accord. After their June 26 meeting, Trump treated Modi to cocktails and dinner at the White House night and the two shared a laugh when he pointed to their social media dominance. Trump’s @realdonaldtrump Twitter handle has 32.8 million followers, while Modi’s Twitter game draws more than 31 million followers.
agenda to our relations.” The personal chemistry between the two leaders could prove as important as policy in setting the tone for the future. They appeared keen to show they got along – hugging twice during their joint appearance. They did not take questions. When it comes to terrorism, Michael Kugelman, a South Asia expert at the Wilson Center, said the two leaders have a similar worldview – that “it needs to be destroyed wherever it rears its murderous head.” He said the designation of Sala-
Trump playfully said he was “proud to announce” that “Prime Minister Modi and I are world leaders in social media – we’re believers – giving the citizens of our countries the opportunity to hear directly from their elected officials, and for us to hear directly from them.” “I guess it’s worked very well in both cases,” Trump said. Modi offered yet another embrace as he departed the White House. After shaking Trump’s hand, Modi went in for a third and final public hug — resting his head first near Trump’s left shoulder, then near his right. Trump welcomed the parting
gesture, patting Modi kindly on the back. -----Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in the United States on the second leg of his three-nation tour, left for Amsterdam after he met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. During the meeting between the two leaders focused on pushing the strategic ties. Trump also hosted PM Modi for a ‘working dinner’, in a first, at the White House. At the joint press statement, President Donald Trump described US as a “true friend” to India and said both the countries are working towards eradicating radical Islamic terrorism. Trump also congratulated India for being the fastest growing economy and said that he looks forward to invest more US energy in India. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to Trump and invited him and his family to visit India. During the meeting with CEOs on Sunday, PM Modi had asked them to invest in India stating that it is ‘a business-friendly destination and that things will only get better once the game-changing tax reform is implemented’. Modi also addressed the Indian diaspora at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, Virginia and talked about the surgical strikes conducted by India after Uri terror attack last year. He said that the strikes proved that India can stand in its own defence when needed.
