Austin Tamil School’s 5th Annual Graduation

(Continued From Page 01) On May 21, 2017, the Austin Tamil School (ATS) hosted its 5th annual graduation ceremony to congratulate all of their students.

The event was spectacular and unique in that each student demonstrated a cultural and/or language based talent that they had learned in their classes during the school

year.

A variety of performances ranging from poetry reading to tongue

twister recitals were displayed to the crowded auditorium filled with an attentive and supportive audience of parents and friends.

The ATS also encouraged its students to try out different skills by having students co-host the event with a few adults.

Each level performed a different talent, starting with Tamil rhymes, then moving on to Tamil rapping, and ending with various versions of the famous Tenali Raman skit.

Students recited the Thirukural and with a unexpected twist, provided the audience with the meaning of each Thirukural passage.

The ATS graduation also featured a student speaking portion in which students shared what they felt that the ATS was about.

“To learn about Tamil happily”, “so that teachers will fix our mistakes so that we can learn from them”, and “to learn about the culture, customs, and traditions and not just the language” were some of the translated responses from the chutti kiddos - as the entire event was spoken in Tamil.

UT Austin Tamil Professor, Sankaran Radhakrishnan, is working with the ATS board to establish a program that allows students to

Greater Austin Malayalee Association (GAMA) organized a Spring Fest at Elizabeth Milburn Park on

GAMA had organized a veritable feast of delicious dishes in an ‘Uttar-Dakshin’ theme.

North Indian delicacies such as bhel puri, pani puri, paav bhaji and biryani perfectly complemented the South Indian - specifically

Keralite - dishes such as kappa and fish curry, red chili chutney and cold buttermilk sambharam.

Of course, since barbecue is a must for every spring picnic, GAMA made sure there were plenty of barbecued chicken to go around!

Apart from all the good food, the guests young and old were entertained throughout the day with various games and contests such as musical chair, water balloons, soccer and volleyball, along with tongue twisters and riddles.

GAMA president Shankar Chandramohan and vice president Sivaprasad Valappil distributed prizes to the winners.

I was speechless and could not deny the fact he mentioned.

Repatriation Of Remains Of The U.S World War-II Unaccounted For Personnel The U.S. Department of Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA) conducted field activities in Arunachal Pradesh, India, from November 1 - December 14, 2016, in search of remains of and artifacts associated with the U.S. World War-II unaccounted-for personnel.

The DPAA team recovered evidence that was subsequently examined by a Joint Forensic Review Committee comprising both DPAA and Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) members.

On December 07, 2016, the Committee determined that the evidence was possibly correlated to the U.S. WW-II service members

unaccounted-for from that region, and recommended the remains and material evidence be transported to a DPAA laboratory for further analysis.

In June 2017, DPAA personnel will escort the evidence from Kolkata to the U.S. laboratory in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. for analysis.

This was seventh such humanitarian mission conducted in India.

Government of India has extended its full support to all these humanitarian missions.

Hira Mohsin, a parent at Peace Academy bought the cold water.

Ambereen Ahmed, an artist based in Austin, printed the messages for each meal. UT student Saba Mashkoor and her brother Ali volunteered to distribute. Parents brought kids to help and what resulted was a block party with only good will to all.

The meals went quickly. Life is hard for homeless people and any good will they can get from the Austin community is well appreciated. Many men and women sat down on street curbside and ate

their meals right there thanking the volunteers for their generosity.

The real inspiration behind the plan was an AJ+ video Hanafi saw during the Ramadan of 2016, which showed Rachid Boulsane, a French Muslim, distribute free meals to the homeless in Paris, France, during Ramadan.

As soon as he would break his fast, he would drive around with prepackaged meals to find homeless on the streets. Hanafi was so inspired that she decided to plan something similar in Austin.

Hanafi said, “Each meal was carefully packed with a message for the less fortunate homeless, talking about Ramadan. The note ended, “with all our prayers and warm wishes from your Muslim friends in Austin.” “To me [the homeless] are giving us the opportunity to do something good and be the best version of yourself,” said Hanafi.

Hanafi plans to hold another Feed it Forward event with the money left over.

A client came from San Antonio with her daughters and bought 9 pieces in one go for an upcoming wedding.

Others called with Instagram photos as reference and placed orders.

They all wanted to know if Zohra Alam would showcase in in Austin again.

Cheema thinks there will be another exhibition before Eid ul Adha.

With three years experience in showcasing and placing orders with Zohra Alam, Cheema is quite an expert in noticing Pakistani fashion trends in USA. “People are much more aware of trends. Austin has become open to new ideas and people love Eid related themes,” said Cheema.

“I am sure I’ll see a lot of her designs on Eid parties,” smiled Cheema proudly.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.

On landing at select airports,

program members enter the U.S. through automatic kiosks, instead of lining up to clear immigration with an immigration officer.

At these airports, members proceed to the Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration.

The kiosk then issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs him or her to the baggage claim and the exit.

The U.S. airports that participate in the Global Entry program include all major airports, including New York, Newark, Washington, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, Miami and Seattle.

Panchatantra Tales - The Elephant And The Sparrow A couple of sparrows lived happily in their nest on top of a huge tree in a jungle. The female sparrow had

laid her eggs in the nest and they were expecting their newborns soon.

On a particular day, unable to bear the heat of the summer sun, an elephant went berserk. He crashed into all trees in his way. On his way, he broke the branches of the tree that supported the nest of the sparrow couple.

As the branches fell, so did the nest and all the newly laid eggs smashed against the ground. Although the sparrows managed to escape by flying away, they were heart-broken to see that they had lost the eggs. The female sparrow began to cry and wail loudly.

A woodpecker, who was at a little distance, was touched by cries. He went to her and said, “Dear good sparrow! There is nothing you can do by crying. What is destined to happen, will happen for sure.”

The female sparrow replied, “That is indeed true. But all my children were killed by this wicked elephant, this is also true. We had done no harm to him.” “If you consider yourself to be a friend”, continued the female sparrow, “Please suggest me a way to destroy this elephant and avenge the death of my children”.

“So I will”, replied the woodpecker, “I have a fly as a friend.

Let us go and ask for her help to destroy this cruel elephant”. Thus, the woodpecker and the female sparrow went to meet the fly. The woodpecker explained, “My friend,

please meet this sparrow. She is a dear friend of mine. Her eggs were destroyed by a wicked elephant; please help us find a way to destroy this cruel elephant.”

“I will certainly help you”, the fly said after hearing the events, “How can I be your friend, and yet not help you when you need me. I have a frog as a good friend, let us seek his help to destroy this wicked elephant.”

Thus, the female sparrow, woodpecker and the fly went to the frog, and explained him of all the events for which they had come to him for help. The old frog said after hearing everything, “The elephant is big, but he is alone. What can this elephant do, if we work together to destroy him? I have a plan!”

He explained, “Fly! When the sun is scorching, your task would be to buzz in his ears. When he closes his eyes in sheer ecstasy, the woodpecker’s task would be to peck his eyes and make him blind. In this scorching summer, he will certainly search for water, but being blinded already he will not be able to do so. I will then sit on the edge of the nearby pit and croak at the top of my voice.”

He continued, “When the thirsty elephant hears me, he will think there is a pond or lake nearby and follow my voice. And when he does so, he will fall into the pit and perish.

This way, we can avenge the death of the sparrow’s children!”

The others agreed to the plan, and organized to do their part of the tasks as laid by the old frog. They executed their tasks successfully, and the elephant fell into a muddy pit and was severely wounded.

Egg Curry

By Bharathi Bande Ingredients: Boiled eggs- 4 Onion 2 medium Tomatoes- 2 Ginger garlic paste - 2 teaspoon Chilli powder 2 - teaspoons Cashews-10 Coconut grated 3 tablespoon

Kitchen king masala powder- 1 teaspoon (optional) Cilantro -to garnish Oil - 3 tablespoons Salt - to taste

and add to the curry , cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

Method: Grind coconut and cashew in to paste. Heat oil in a pan; add onions fry the onions till they are translucent.

Add ginger garlic paste fry till the raw smell goes.

Add chilli powder and finely chopped tomatoes, fry till the tomatoes become mushy. Add salt to taste.

Add ground coconut and cashew paste and add water to your consistency.

Boil the curry for 5 to 6 minutes. Cut eggs into half

Finally add optional Kitchen king masala powder. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Simple, healthy and delicious egg curry is ready.
