6 Simple Tricks To Start Each Day Strong

Pressing snooze, finally waking up frazzled, rushing through the house to leave on time, skipping breakfast – if that sounds like a typical morning for you, creating a new routine to start days on a stronger note may help you feel more refreshed and accomplished.

For many people, easy, breezy mornings may sound like a fantasy. However, instituting these simple tips from the experts at Buddha Teas – creators of fresh, organic teas with high-quality ingredients to let you explore nature’s best qualities – can put you on a fast track toward less frantic beginnings to each day.

Begin a Bedtime Routine

A bright-eyed, bushy-tailed morning actually starts the night before. To help ensure you’re getting enough sleep each night (7 hours or more for adults, according to the National Institutes of Health), make sure you’re winding down both physically and mentally be-

fore heading to bed. This often means skipping caffeine, turning off devices and avoiding big meals close to bedtime.

Wake Up at the Same Time Each Day

As part of your fixed bedtime routine, try going to sleep and waking up at the same times each day – including weekends. This may help your body create a natural rhythm to make it easier for you to rise

in the morning without pressing snooze.

Start with Something You Enjoy

Whether you’re a morning person or natural night owl, knowing you’ll start the day with something enjoyable can help you dread that ringing alarm clock a little less. For example, a steaming mug of Buddha Teas Turmeric Ginger blend offers a delicious and comforting way to wake up. Turmeric’s pun-

gent flavor combined with delightfully sweet ginger warms with every sip to energize your morning.

Meditate and Move

While a meditation session may sound like a quicker way to put you back in bed than get your day going, it can actually be beneficial to harness positive energy first thing. Focus on deep breathing, calm your mind and slow your heart rate prior to taking on the day’s tasks. Once you’re mentally motivated, move on to physical preparation with 10-15 minutes of light stretching to energize your body and get your blood flowing.

Strengthen Your Body

Another key aspect to a successful morning includes strengthening yourself physically by eating and drinking foods and beverages that provide immunity-boosting ingredients.

Consuming a powerful blend of healing, protecting and preventative herbs can be a productive way

to defend your body from free radicals with a beverage like Buddha Teas Echinacea Elderberry, which is packed with organic and plantbased vitamin C, antioxidants and detoxifying herbs. Echinacea, used for centuries to heal and protect, is combined with elderberry’s high levels of vitamin C, which is essential for growth, development and reparation of the body.

Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

Everyone knows the common refrain: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Yet, many people choose to skip a morning meal or simply run out of time, despite the many benefits of refueling before heading off to work or school. Plus, making time to eat in the morning can provide the energy you need to tackle your to-do list. Find more beneficial ways to start your days strong by visiting BuddhaTeas.com.

5 Activities To Keep Children Active

Everybody, no matter their age, can benefit from daily physical activity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young children should be physically active throughout the day for growth and development.

Despite the common misconception that children are in perpetual motion, the CDC reminds caregivers to encourage children to be active when they play.

“Physical activity is important because it is critical in assisting with gross motor development and helps support development in other areas,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare Learning Center’s education team.

“Children thrive when we give them the tools to use their bodies and muscles in new ways and make mind-body connections.”

Consider these five activities to encourage children to get moving. Blow bubbles. Appealing to children from infancy on up, seeing bubbles floating around can encourage babies to reach out and try

bubbles and watching them pop.

Build a tunnel. Whether indoors or out, made from furniture covered with sheets or cardboard boxes, tunnels encourage children

Play hide and seek. As they dash around trying to find the perfect hiding spot, children build spatial awareness, their understanding of where their bodies are in relation to other people and objects.

Play red light, green light. This classic game helps children build coordination - connecting the verbal instruction with the physical movement - while also teaching them impulse control, an essential executive function skill.

Be sure to get creative with instructions and add variations like tip-toeing, crawling, hopping and more.

Walk the line. Draw a line on the ground using chalk outdoors or painter’s tape indoors and encourage your children to walk along the line. This activity helps children improve balance and coordination.

Get creative and add in a challenge by drawing a wavy or zig-zag line. Once your children get the hang of following the line, ask them to think of other ways to travel along that space, such as hopping on one foot or skipping.

New Ways To Save Money In Your Digital Life

We’ve all heard those time-tested ways to save money -- dine out less, sign up for rewards programs or switch off the lights when you leave the room.

But in today’s digital world, there are some great ways to save that you may not have thought about. From swapping wireless carriers to installing smart home devices to shopping electronically, here are several new ideas to save cash on your digital lifestyle.

Make Your Discount Work for You

Today, around 50 million people take advantage of discounts from their employer or affiliated organization to save on talk, text and data plans. These deals are often so great that consumers never think to comparison shop to see if they could save more by switching.

In fact, approximately 30 percent of wireless customers with discounts say they stay put because of their deals.

Take another look at what’s out there -- you might just be surprised at what’s new. For example, T-Mobile recently announced it will match or beat eligible wireless discounts from other major carriers when you switch to their Magenta plan, which is

Importance And Benefits Of Yoga

(Continued From Page 01)

What they don’t understand is that what they see as simply just another form of exercise will profit them in ways they never envisioned. Before we get into the benefits of Yoga, it is essential to understand what exactly Yoga really is. Yoga is not a religion, it’s a way of living that aims towards a healthy mind in a healthy body. Man is a physical, mental and spiritual being; Yoga helps in developing the balance between all the three as stated in Ayurveda in India. Other forms of exercise, like aerobics, only assure physical wellbeing. These exercises have very little to do with the improvement of spiritual or astral body. Yoga is not just about bending or twisting the body and holding the breath. It is a technique to bring you into a state where you see and experience reality simply the way it is.

If you enable your energies to become exuberant and ecstatic, your sensory body expands. This enables you to experience the whole universe as a part of yourself, making everything one, this is the union that yoga creates.

The founder of Yoga, Patanjali stated, “Sthiram sukham asanam.” It implies that a posture that appears to be firm and agreeable is your asana. You may be astounded to know that an asana is just a preliminary step into the act of yoga. It is a way that encourages you to achieve the greater good. Yoga focusses on idealizing concordance between your mind, body, and soul. When you adjust yourself so everything functions brilliantly within you, you will draw out the best of your capabilities.

Importance Of Yoga

The perfect unison can be achieved through Hatha Yoga and its various branches (Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Yin Yoga, Kundalini Yoga), depending on what you like and the problems you are looking to tackle through the practice.

Some Of The Advantages Of Yoga Are As Follows:

Improves brain function

Lower stress levels

Alters gene expression

Increases flexibility

Lowers blood pressure

Improves lung capacity

Relieves anxiety

Relieves chronic back pain

Lowers blood sugar in diabetics

Improves sense of balance

Stronger bones

Healthy weight

Lowers risk of heart diseases

Yoga as a practice has innumerable benefits that positively affects an individual both physically and mentally. Whether it is reducing your blood pressure or raising your pain tolerance, listed below are a few things that yoga works on:

Enhanced Circulation:

Yoga improves your blood circulation. This means better transportation of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Improved blood flow also indicates healthier organs and glowing skin.

packed with benefits like unlimited talk, text and data, a Netflix subscription, and mobile hotspot. T-Mobile’s Magenta plan also has taxes and fees included, so you’ll also save money each month there.

The company promises that once you switch, it will match or beat the discount: up to $15 for one line or up to $30 for two or more lines. Plus, T-Mobile typically has special offers on phones for those switching carriers. Learn more at www.T-Mobile.com.

Make Your Home Smarter

You used to save money by simply turning down your thermostat in winter and up in summer. Now you can make your home (and wallet) smart by using a smart thermostat, such as those from Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell or other home automation companies.

These smart devices help you wring more savings from your thermostat than traditional temperature management.

Some models come with sensors to place around your home to more finely tune your temperature, adapt to your routines, and allow you to control them from your phone, PC or tablet.

You can even change settings while on-thego, so you don’t waste energy when your routine changes without warning.

Shop Better Electronically

First there were physical coupons. Then came online coupons. Now there are couponing apps and web browser extensions to make it even easier to save.

For instance, Ebates empowers you to earn as much as 40 percent cash back when shopping at over 2,500 stores -- including Kohl’s, Sephora, Old Navy, Walmart, Amazon, Gap and others -- without having to keep track of points or fill out forms.

When shopping through the mobile app or via a plug-in through your web browser, you automatically save. Stores pay Ebates a commission for sending you their way, and that money gets shared with you. Just don’t shop so much that you buy things you don’t need!

Re-examining your daily routine can help you find new ways to save on just about every service or staple you use. Try these effective solutions to save more and spend less in today’s digital world.

Purchasing A Portable AC? Keep These Tips In Mind

With scorching summer tempera-

The good news? Cool interiors and ultra-quiet performance can co-exist, if you shop around.

In addition to purchasing a great portable AC unit, proper maintenance can help ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently.

Periodically remove the filter from the unit and dust it, and clean debris from inside the unit with compressed air.

A few lifestyle changes can also contribute to a cooler, more com-

fortable home.

These changes include avoiding the stove and oven on super-hot days, planting shade-bearing trees or bushes outside windows, and swapping out incandescent bulbs for energy efficient LEDs.

Navigating a sea of misleading product claims can be exhausting,

particularly when it comes to buying the equipment you need to keep your home and family comfortable in extreme weather.

However, when it comes to a cool home, you don’t have to sweat it.

A bit of research can help you achieve optimal comfort this summer. (StatePoint)

tures here, a cautionary tale unfolds for those in search of a portable AC unit to beat the heat.

Enticing promises and clever marketing tactics make it easy to fall prey to the pitfalls that await unsuspecting buyers. Here’s how to be a savvy shopper:

• Ratings: Be aware that a higher advertised BTU rating doesn’t always guarantee a cooler paradise.

Crafty sellers may advertise more BTUs than the product’s actual performance, but buyers beware.

The truth lies in making sure you are matching the Department of Energy’s (DOE) BTU rating to your room’s square footage according to the DOE guidelines.

When shopping online or in-store, be sure to check the fine print for the certified DOE rated BTU level for correct coverage – and if you don’t see this information listed, stay away! A free online BTU calculator can help you choose wisely.

• Certification: Manufacturers are

proclamations of excellence.

Don’t let smooth talkers lure you in with mere claims and great prices. Insist on reviewing the product’s energy guide for the actual BTU rating.

Also, make sure the portable AC you are interested in is authenticated by credible third-party organizations. This indicates it has met or exceeded performance standards.

• Type: Before making a decision between window ACs or portable units, determine which type best suits your needs and the room before making a purchase.

As a general rule, portable units can be easier to install and more versatile.

• Noise: Whether you’re sensitive to noise or simply don’t prefer to hear the sound of a motor running, check the unit’s decibel (dB) rating.

It’s one easy-to-ignore specification that can make a huge difference.

Keeping A Promise To The Area School Districts

It is an annual tradition for Hindu Charities for America (HC4A) to kick off the summer with Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt (BMBB), a joint event with Jewish Community Center.

At BMBB, they celebrate the power of various cultures through dance while also raising money for school supplies for their annual backpacking event.

HC4A provides school supplies to economically disadvantaged children by partnering with the local school districts of Manor, Austin and Del Valle.

In addition, they provide school supplies to other organizations such as Share the Will Foundation, Greater Love Baptist Church, Dow Spring Proud and Asian Families Support Services of Austin.

“Do you know how heartbreaking it is to tell the schools that we’ve been serving for 12 years that we cannot provide the school supplies and support [the students]?” Harish Kotecha said.

However, the tide turned when a few key supporters and donors encouraged the board to not back down and continue pursuing donations.

An email plea to the donors allowed people to open up their hearts, and HC4A quickly raised the needed money to provide school supplies to 1,400 underprivileged children this year!

“It was a joyous moment to call back these schools and convey to them that we are indeed able to provide school supplies, “ Kotecha said.

“It was the satisfaction you get from keeping a promise.”

This organization works closely with LISD to support the backpack food program at various schools, which provides packaged food items to low-income kids for the weekends.

School supplies are also provided annually both at LISD Schools and through Hindu Charities for America.

Each year they provide four scholarships at Austin Community College, which provides a two-year degree to single mothers and a means to support their families.

D.M. Pest Control, which has sponsored HC4A events and provided services through silent auction, is a family owned & operated business that has been serving the Central Texas area for over 25 years.

5 Winning Tips For Youth Sports Parents

(Continued From Page 01)

In fact, sports can provide a multitude of benefits for young athletes. From improving physical health to gaining valuable social and leadership skills, team-oriented activities give kids a way to explore their own interests and have a little fun.

Put your future all-stars on a path to success with these tips for youth sports parents.

Encourage Kids to Try Multiple Sports

If your little ones are first-time athletes, signing up for multiple sports exposes them to a variety of options.

They can navigate their own interests and discover their unique talents through each sport’s different challenges.

For example, some require more endurance, like soccer and basketball, while others call on coordination and balance, such as dance or baseball.

Once they’ve experienced a few activities, allowing them to choose which sports to continue participating in provides a sense of independence.

Outfit Athletes with the Proper Gear

Each sport and activity comes with equipment requirements, ranging from simple (a ball and a net) to complex (helmets, pads, bases and more).

Proper footwear is a must, whether it’s cleats for outdoor events or shoes with ankle support for a sport like basketball.

Remember, safety comes first, which is why your children may need helmets, shin guards, knee pads or other protective equipment.

Be sure to talk to coaches or league coordinators about what equipment is provided and what you may need to purchase (or borrow).

Familiarize Yourself with the Sports

While you don’t need to be a hall of fame coach to enjoy your kids’ events, understanding the rules and regulations can help you be a more informed parent.

Plus, it shows your little athletes you’re taking an interest in their activities when you can discuss the game together.

If you’re able, one of the best ways to learn is to attend a local professional, semi-professional, college or even high school game with your children so everyone can get in on the fun together.

Make Postgame Cleanup a Breeze

Many people don’t know sweat can lead to bacteria, which secrete acids with a distinct, stinky odor.

Just think about all the bacteria living in a gym bag after your children’s big games.

Behind a team of bacteria-fighting scientists, Lysol Labs is hitting the road to visit youth sporting events across the country on a mission to educate parents and their

skill level. Remember to acknowledge their effort, encourage fun with teammates and friends, celebrate successes and let them learn from their mistakes.

The ‘Strike Out Stink’ Routine: A Parent’s Guide to the Perfect Postgame Victory

The fun of a baseball, softball or soccer game in the summer sun usually involves getting dirty and working up a sweat. The stinky gear is a sure sign of youthful exuberance, but also means postgame laundry for parents.

young athletes that bacteria can be the source of their stinky clothes.

“A single stinky sock can contain more than 8 million bacteria,” said Callum Couser, Reckitt Research and Development Operations Manager, Hygiene.

“This program was created to show parents the number of bacteria in their kids’ clothes and how to eliminate 99.9% of the odor-causing bacteria on stinky clothes during the summer sports season.”

You can strike out stink with a laundry additive like Lysol Laundry Sanitizer, which kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria on laundry when used as directed and helps simplify your postgame routine.

Available in 41-ounce and 90-ounce containers in a variety of scents and formats, it contains 0% bleach and even works in cold water. Find more information at Lysol.com.

Be Supportive and Make It Fun

It’s exciting to watch children excel on the field, but not all kids are destined for the big leagues.

For most youth athletes, more important than the advancement of on-field skills are the growth in areas like taking direction, following rules, developing work ethic and learning to socialize.

You can make it a positive experience for your children by supporting their endeavors regardless of

Along with its mobile science center teaching parents how to eliminate stink, Lysol Labs teamed up with mother of two Jordana Brewster, who shared her top tips for keeping laundry sanitized.

“The ‘Strike Out Stink Routine’ can help parents keep their laundry smelling fresh all summer long,” Brewster said.

“I know from firsthand experience that odor-causing bacteria plays hardball, but it’s officially met its match. There are just four steps to this routine, and they couldn’t be easier to follow.”

1. Warm Up

• When the game ends, parents spring into action. Get your athletes and their stinky gear home.

2. The Unbagging

• If the odor is enough to make parents break into their own sweat, it’s game on.

3. Sanitize

• Let your MVP play. An option like Lysol Laundry Sanitizer strikes out stubborn bacterial odor on socks, uniforms and gym bags.

4. Cool Down

• When stink is defeated, parents can cool down and plan for the next game.

A Special Message from Sita Singh:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden marked what they have described as a new stage in the India-U.S. relationship, as Mr. Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the White House’s South Lawn by Mr. Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

Cabinet officials on both sides, and a few thousand diaspora members — some of whom chanted “Modi, Modi” — were in attendance. The visit was not just pomp and ceremony — the two sides announced a long list of deliverables spanning defence, critical and emerging technology, health, energy and mobility. Mr. Biden characterised this as a “next generation partnership” between the two countries.

“After becoming the Prime Minister, I have come here many times, but today for the first time the doors of the White House have been opened for the Indian-American community in such large numbers,” Mr. Modi said.

Members of the diaspora in attendance chanted “Modi, Modi” and “Vande mataram” before the Prime Minister’s arrival , while some also shouting “USA, USA” during the ceremony.

Also palpable in Washington were concerns around Mr. Modi’s past, when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, as well as concerns about

democratic backsliding in India, today. Over 70 lawmakers wrote to Mr. Biden asking him to raise democratic norms and human rights during his discussions with Mr. Modi. A handful of lawmakers announced they would boycott Mr. Modi’s address to the U.S. Congress.

Former President Barack Obama, who is a close friend of Mr. Biden, also weighed in, appealing to Mr. Modi to protect ethnic minorities in India.

“…As democracies, we can better tap into the full talent of all of our people and attract investments… with our greatest export being the power of our example: equity under the law, freedom of expression, religious, pluralism and diversity of our people,” Mr. Biden said in his welcome speech on the South Lawn of the White House.

Both leaders referred to the two countries’ constitutions beginning with the phrase “We the people”.

“Both of our countries take pride in their diversity. Both of us believe in the fundamental principle of in the interest of all for the welfare of all,” Mr. Modi said as per a translated version of his speech. “Our strong strategic partnership is a clear proof of the power of democracy,” he added. Stroke Rising in Young Populations: Here’s What You Need to Know

Often times stroke is associated with older populations, but many people are unaware that it can occur at any age. In fact, one out of five people who have a stroke are under age 55.

A stroke is a brain attack that occurs when blood vessels in the brain are blocked or burst. Strokes can cause long-term disability, impair a person’s ability to speak, see or move, and can even result in death. While you can lose everything to stroke, taking quick action at the first sign can help with recovery and have a

How Urologists Detect Bladder Cancer With Blue Light Cystoscopy

• Eyes: Loss of vision in one or both eyes

• Face: Face looks uneven or droopy

• Arm: Arm or leg is weak or hanging down

• Speech: Slurred speech, trouble speaking or seems confused

• Time: Immediately call 911

No matter a person’s age, understanding stroke risk factors is also vital, as some factors can be managed with lifestyle changes. These risk factors include high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, poor circulation, lack of physical activity and obesity.

Like many bladder cancer survivors, Karen S. often reflects on her personal experience with the disease, and the support she received throughout her healthcare journey.

Karen was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2010 at age 54, after experiencing symptoms for two years. As an oncology nurse for more than 40 years, she was well aware of the many forms of cancer.

Nevertheless, she assumed her frequent urinary tract infections and discomfort were gynecological in nature and never expected her doctors to discover a tumor or to be diagnosed with bladder cancer.

After receiving a variety of medical treatments, Karen still had persistent disease.

BLC, since many people may not be aware of this option. BLC may help others diagnosed with bladder cancer the way it helped me,” says Karen.

Today, Karen is cancer free and continues to support those affected by bladder cancer, including patients, caregivers and their loved

lasting impact. Unfortunately, almost 30% of adults younger than 45 don’t know the five most common symptoms of a stroke, according to research published in The American Heart Association’s “Stroke.” At the same time, stroke is on the rise in that age group.

“Young people who are not familiar with the most common signs of stroke are at risk of inaction at a time when every second matters,” says Sheryl Martin-Schild, MD, PhD, stroke medical director at Touro Infirmary. “Both stroke survival and recovery are possible with the right care at the right time.”

Immediate medical attention is dependent on everyone learning and being able to recognize the sudden onset of the BE FAST signs and symptoms of a stroke in themselves and others and calling 911 immediately. BE FAST stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time and refers to these signs of stroke:

• Balance: Sudden loss of balance

It’s important for everyone to talk to their health care provider about safely managing these factors through diet, exercise and smoking cessation, particularly for those at higher risk due to age (risk increases as you get older), race (African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian/Pacific Islanders have a higher risk of stroke than people of other races), sex (more women have strokes than men) and family history (risk is greater if a family member has had a stroke).

“According to the CDC, stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Therefore, it’s critical to learn the signs and take action right away,” says Dr. Martin-Schild. “It is far better to react than to regret.”

She transferred to a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center where her bladder cancer specialist informed her about a technology called Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC) that would allow her doctor to see tumors that white light alone may miss.

“BLC was a quick and easy procedure that gave my doctor the ability to identify tumors early on, allowing for earlier and less aggressive treatment,” says Karen.

Each year, about 81,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. Symptoms in both men and women can mimic common urinary tract infections, like they did for Karen. For men, however, the more common symptom is blood in the urine. Whatever the symptoms, it is important to see a doctor. According to Karen, people with bladder cancer, or those who suspect they may have bladder cancer, should ask their doctor questions and seek a second opinion.

Once diagnosed, they should explore support groups and do research on bladder cancer, including learning about the latest treatments and technologies available.

“It’s especially important for me to inform others about the benefits of

A cystoscopy is a medical procedure where a urology healthcare professional uses a thin, tube-like telescope called a cystoscope to look directly into the bladder for a close examination of the lining.

This procedure is used to help find the cause of symptoms and to treat and monitor the condition. Historically, the only type of cystoscopy available used white light.

BLC, however, uses both white and blue light to offer significantly improved detection of suspicious areas compared to white light alone and has been proven to increase the detection of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

It’s BBQ Season. Do You Know Where Your Beef Came From?

As barbecue season heats up, you may be wondering how to square your love for T-bone steaks and spareribs with your concern for the environment.

The good news? Science is delivering new, game-changing solutions to tackle the environmental footprint of the beef and livestock industries.

The Problem

Approximately 9 million dairy cows, 90 million beef cattle, 60 million swine and billions of poultry in the United States produce more than 100 times more organic waste than humans; but where human waste makes its way to a septic tank or sewage treatment plant, livestock waste is usually spread untreated on the ground as fertilizer.

While this practice has short-term agricultural benefits, it’s ultimately a major contributor to a number of

environmental and health issues. Phosphorous, nitrogen (mostly as ammonia), pathogens and bacteria from manure run off the soil and pollute waterways. This nutrient runoff fuels increasingly toxic algae blooms in fresh, estuary and coastal salt waters, creating areas where most aquatic species can’t survive.

What’s more, the highly mobile and volatile nitrogen from ammonia in animal waste can become airborne, a difficult and expensive

to control problem that poses significant health risks to humans.

Finally, the 1.5 billion tons of manure generated in the United States annually also plays a major role in climate change. Manure emits carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, all of which are potent greenhouse gases.

New Solutions

An advanced livestock waste collection, treatment and recycling

system from Bion Environmental Technologies Inc. is transforming manure from a liability to an asset.

It starts with an innovative barn design that houses the livestock, collects waste, and feeds the treatment system on a continual basis.

This patented technology not only provides comprehensive waste treatment that neutralizes pathogens, bacteria and ammonia and minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, but also produces superior organic, and climate- and watersmart, fertilizers with a low carbon footprint, as well as generates clean water and renewable natural gas.

Typical beef production uses an extraordinary amount of water, particularly from crops for feed. With Bion, 30% of the waste stream is processed into recycled, clean water.

And, thanks to precise application

of organic and climate-smart fertilizers produced by the system, the resulting soil is healthier with a better balance of nutrients.

In short, more abundant crops are produced, less water is used and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.

Along with environmental stewardship and resource efficiency at the forefront of the technology’s design, experts have been retained to ensure that animal accommodations, hygiene, care and feeding are all optimized for animal health and welfare. To learn more, visit bionenviro.com.

“Today’s consumers want sustainable, transparent and ‘better for you’ food,” says Bill O’Neill, Bion’s CEO.

“Through innovation, we are bringing real beef to tables that is both sustainable and ethical.” (StatePoint)

How To Attract The Best Candidates For Your Business

As most business owners know, one of the most valuable assets your enterprise needs to thrive is top-notch talent.

With one in four U.S. adults currently looking for a new job, the right people are out there, it’s just a matter of connecting with them. According to CareerBuilder, here’s how to make your company attractive to job seekers and how to leverage tools to find them:

• Make room for growth: A recent survey from CareerBuilder and Morning Consult finds that when it comes to what’s most important to job seekers, it’s “good salary/benefits and interesting work.”

Give potential employees confidence that working for you will allow them to take care of their finances, provide for their families and do work that they are proud of.

Before posting the position, first seek out industry insights to ensure your compensation package is competitive.

Also ensure that you’re offering a clear path for growth. During the interview process, let candidates know that if they are hired, you will invest the time and energy in seeing them develop professionally.

“Employers must get creative in their approach to skill development and training as a way to fill the existing skills gap and accelerate promotions,” says Kristin Kel-

ley, chief marketing officer, CareerBuilder.

• Find your purpose: A people-oriented, purpose-driven work culture can help you not only attract great job candidates, but retain employees.

“Companies with a powerful mission, who also value their employees will stand the test of time. Creating an environment where people can thrive is equally impor-

tant,” says Kelley.

• Be flexible: If the nature of your business allows for it, consider embracing new technologies that allow you to implement flexible work experiences, such as remote or hybrid work.

Giving your employees the option to work from home is a key benefit that will attract talent, plus it could potentially broaden your pool nationwide or even internationally.

• Turn to easy-to-use hiring platforms: Finding the best fit for a given position can be extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming.

However, hiring software featuring industry-leading technology can make the process much smoother and more efficient. For example, CareerBuilder offers

recruiting solutions that allow you to target your ideal job seekers with custom campaigns, build your talent pipeline, and source and screen candidates in a fraction of the time.

The platform allows employers to quickly create highly visible job postings in one central hub where 140 million resumes and social profiles reside, search for job candidates 50% faster and reduce the overall hiring time by more than 30%. For more information, visit hiring.careerbuilder.com.

Talent acquisition is just one of a business owner’s many priorities. With the right mindset, strategies and tools, you can attract the best candidates for your business and bring them on board quickly. (StatePoint)

Furry Friends Can Cause Distracted Driving. Here’s How To Stay Safe

Summer road trip season is heating up. Whether your vacation plans include national parks, sandy beaches or major metropolises, you may be thinking of bringing the entire family along, even your four-legged companions.

While we love having them near, dogs aren’t always safe passengers. A recent poll commissioned by Selective Insurance, a leading home, auto and business insurance carrier, found that in the past 12 months, dogs caused a majority of drivers to be distracted on U.S. roadways.

The study, conducted online by The Harris Poll, found that of licensed drivers who recently (over the last 12 months) drove with their dogs, 91% admitted to interacting with them while driving, including interactions requiring the driver to take their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road, and 48% acknowledged that they are more distracted when their dog is in the vehicle than when it is not.

“We love our dogs. However, some of their behaviors in the car, such as sitting on drivers’ laps, jump-

ing between seats, or sticking their heads out the window, divert drivers’ attention from operating a vehicle,” said Scott Smith, vice president and director of Safety Management at Selective Insurance.

“To help keep our roads safe, drivers need to minimize distractions. That means our beloved pet passengers should be restrained in the back seat, and if they need tending, drivers should first pull over to a safe place.”

Some of the more hazardous be-

haviors that drivers engaged in while recently on the road with their dog include giving them food/ treats/water (36%), taking a photo/ video of their dog (27%) or holding them in place (23%) while driving.

In addition, 40% of drivers who have ever driven with their dog confessed to various reckless driving behaviors as a direct result of having their dog in the vehicle, including swerving out of the lane (11%) and hard braking (13%).

This summer, as you head out with your dog on journeys near and far,

help minimize driving distractions in your vehicle with these tips from Selective Insurance:

• Have your dog ride in the back seat and consider using a partition between the front and back seats.

• Use a dog seatbelt, safety harness or anchored crate to prevent distractions and provide your dog with some protection if there is an accident. A significant 70% of licensed drivers who recently drove with their dogs say their dogs were unrestrained in the vehicle.

Yet, 82% of drivers who recently drove with their dogs agree that having an unrestrained dog in a moving vehicle can distract the driver. Not using a restraint is risky and could put you in violation of the law. Some states have animal restraint laws for vehicles to help keep drivers safe and focused.

However, only 24% of licensed drivers who recently drove with their dogs say they are very familiar with such laws in their state. That’s compared to 34% who say they didn’t know these laws ex-

isted.

• Plan ahead and identify rest stops along your route so you and your dog can take a break. If you need to make an unplanned stop, avoid the side of the road and instead look for a quiet parking lot. Use these occasions to give your dog food, a little exercise and most importantly in summer, plenty of water.

For additional survey findings, along with tips to keep roadways safe and K-9 companions secure, visit Selective.com. For survey methodology, visit selective.com.

“More pets in homes, especially with the introduction of the pandemic puppy, means more Americans than ever may be hitting the roads with their pooch on road trips this summer.

Drivers should understand the risks associated with taking them along for the ride,” said Smith. (StatePoint)

Tips For Homeowners To Improve Safety And Sustainability

You may not realize it, but building safety has a huge impact on our everyday lives.

According to InjuryFacts.NSC.org, about 16 out of 100 people were injured in a home or community venue in 2021.

The leading causes that contribute to these injuries, such as drowning, fire smoke, and general home maintenance, can be prevented by acting ahead of time.

As the leading global source of model codes, standards and building safety solutions, the Code Council is passionate about educating homeowners on fire safety, home maintenance and sustainability practices.

Here are some safety tips from the

Code Council to help prevent accidents and keep your family and community safe:

Fire Safety Tips:

• Put a smoke alarm on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area and inside every bedroom. Test each smoke alarm regularly and replace it every 10 years.

• Install home fire sprinklers. They are relatively affordable and can increase property value and lower insurance rates.

• Make an escape plan with a meeting place outside so everyone knows how to get out fast.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from portable heaters.

• Keep all items that can burn away from your home. Remember to clean leaves from your gutters and clear dead leaves and branches from shrubs and trees surrounding your home.

Home Maintenance Tips:

• Never overload electrical cords or power strips.

• Don’t use appliances that have damaged cords.

• For mold prevention, watch for leaky pipes, condensation and wet spots, and fix sources of moisture problems as soon as possible.

• Keep in mind that there are several materials and items that should never be flushed down the toilet, including medication, disposable wipes, coffee grounds and more.

• To prevent your pipes from freezing in the winter, drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following

Vegan Curious? Here’s How To Get Started

Following a vegan diet doesn’t just reduce one’s impact on the environment, it’s associated with a range of health benefits, making it no surprise that a plant-based food movement is on the rise.

“With more than 100,000 internet searches per month for ‘vegan recipes’ and ‘vegetarian recipes,’ it’s clear there is high demand for plant-based meals,” says Chef Fred Scarpulla, chief culinary officer at Amy’s Kitchen, an organic and vegetarian food company.

A recent national survey commissioned by Amy’s Kitchen and conducted by Atomik Research finds that 52% of Americans are vegancurious, and men are even more inquisitive, with nearly 3 in 5 revealing an interest in cutting out animal products.

Every individual may have their own unique reasons, but the survey revealed Americans’ most common motivators for purchasing or eating plant-based foods were their health (55%), a desire to protect the environment (34%) and a preferred taste of plant-based ingredients (28%). No matter why you’re considering a vegan lifestyle, actually adopting one is not always easy. In

fact, 72% of parents in households with dietary restrictions say finding prepared foods that meet their family’s needs is very or extremely challenging.

“Cutting down on meat and incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet doesn’t have to be complicated or restrictive,” says Chef Fred.

Whether you’re transitioning to a vegan diet, incorporating meatless Mondays into your routine or simply curious about meatless cooking, Chef Fred offers the following tips to help you get started:

• Don’t restrict yourself: While going vegan may sound like it’s all about cutting foods out, it’s actually an opportunity to explore new flavors and ingredients you may

not have tried before, and to indulge in veganfriendly cuisines from around the world, such as Indian food and Thai food. Plus, these days, vegan alternatives to a number of favorite comfort foods, like enchiladas, pizza and even mac and cheese, abound.

• Keep it simple: As you build your repertoire of go-to vegan meals, take a mental inventory of your family’s favorite dishes. Many of them may already be vegan, or able to made vegan with a few tweaks. Also, be sure to check out online resources offering vegan meal plans, which can help ensure your overall diet is balanced, satisfying and delicious.

• Look for shortcuts: Creating meals from scratch is not always possible for busy families. In fact, 56% of Americans want shortcuts to plant-based meals. Luckily,

the manufacturer’s or installer’s directions.

• Make sure all pedestrian gates in the barrier fence of your swimming pool are self-closing and selflatching.

According to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the average U.S. family can spend $2,000 a year on energy bills. This means that reducing your home energy use is the single most effective way to save money and reduce your home’s contribution to greenhouse gasses.

The Code Council recognizes that for many people, it’s unclear where to start, and suggests the following tips to help communities forge a path forward.

Energy and Sustainability Tips:

there are a growing number of convenient vegan meal options available. Amy’s Kitchen, for example, is founded on the principle that everyone should be able to enjoy a delicious, convenient meal, even those with dietary restrictions, which is why they don’t use meat, peanuts, fish, shellfish or eggs in any of their recipes, and why they offer gluten-free and kosher options.

The brand, which works with farmers using organic and regenerative farming practices to lessen its impact on the planet, has an expanding vegan menu that includes snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner options, making it easy to ensure your diet aligns with your values and your desire to eat healthfully.

• Get creative: To reduce prep work, follow recipes that start with already prepared vegan foods. Visit amys.com/eating-well/recipes to access Amy’s Kitchen’s library of healthy vegan recipes.

“Whether you choose to go fully vegan or simply want to incorporate more plants into your diet, rely on solutions that make it easy, convenient and delicious,” says Chef Fred. (StatePoint)

• Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators and use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. These steps can improve water conservation.

• To prevent stormwater runoff pollution, never dump anything down storm drains.

• Change the filters in your home’s heating and cooling system regularly to increase energy efficiency.

• Replace your light bulbs with LEDs, which use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

• Build green and design your home with materials that are easily recyclable, reusable, renewable, durable, affordable and low maintenance.

• Build a rain garden to capture roof drainage and divert it to your garden or landscaping to recycle non-potable water. Be sure to check your local rules on rainwater harvesting prior to installation.

Pain In Your Foot Or Ankle? It Could Be Arthritis

Arthritis in the feet and ankles can produce swelling and pain, deformity, loss of joint function and loss of mobility. Whereas previous generations had to accept this as a normal part of aging, an explosion of new therapies and surgical treatments is offering patients today both hope and relief. For best results however, foot and ankle surgeons urge early intervention.

“When it comes to arthritis, it’s important not to tough out symptoms or bear the pain,” says Danielle Butto, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

“Earlier treatment is not just about alleviating symptoms sooner. In many cases, we can even slow the progression of the symptoms, and use less invasive procedures to treat the condition than we would otherwise.”

Understanding the early warning signs of arthritis, the progression of different forms of the disease and the new treatments available are important for getting

the proper treatment and managing your symptoms.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints. One common area where osteoarthritis occurs is the big toe. The big toe makes it possible for you to walk and run upright, absorb-

ing forces equal to nearly twice your body weight when walking.

With all it endures, it’s no surprise that overuse can erode cartilage, causing serious pain and even physical deformities. Nevertheless, many people confuse big toe arthritis, also known as hallux rigidus, with bunions.

Early signs of hallux rigidus include pain and

How Video Games Help Boost Military Morale

For military members, video games are not just a fun way to unwind during downtime, they can provide much-needed stress relief and an opportunity to connect with friends and family.

For these reasons, video games have had a place in USO centers over the past four decades -- from the early days of standup arcade games and pinball machines, to today’s modern video game consoles and livestreaming. In fact, the USO has taken its gaming initiative to the next level by outfitting more of its locations with dedicated gaming spaces, equipped with all the latest technology, as well as by hosting in-person and online video game events . Here are the top ways these initiatives benefit service members:

• Combating isolation: In recent surveys, time away from family because of military service is a top concern within the military community. Through gaming, military members can connect with loved ones back home.

• Stress relief: About half of military and veteran video gamers specifically play video games in order to deal with military-related stress. Research conducted by the Department of Veteran Affairs shows

that gaming can improve mental health by helping veterans cope with combat-induced trauma, by alleviating stress and by providing opportunities to bond with others.

• Building camaraderie: Gaming often encourages collaboration and can be an important way to socialize and make friends with fellow service members. USO locations are outfitted with a variety of gaming equipment and consoles designed specifically so that groups of service members can play together. This is significant, as studies show that playing video games on teams and with others can improve teamwork in daily life.

• Breaking barriers: Gaming allows service members of all ranks to step away from the

chain of command and be on equal footing as they compete against and alongside one another. And thanks to dedicated spaces at USO centers around the world, such as the 2,500 square-foot facility gaming center on Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida, service members and their families can enjoy state-of-the-art systems and games at no cost.

• Engaging with the community: In addition to local gaming events at its individual centers, the USO hosts larger online gaming competitions, which are often livestreamed via Twitch. These competitions, which are occasionally open to the public and sometimes feature high-profile professional gamers, serve as a means for active military to engage with members of the community, bridging the civilian-military divide.

“Gaming’s ability to give service members a break from the pressure and responsibility of their daily missions, while building community and strengthening bonds, goes straight to the heart of our mission,” says Callum Fletcher, USO director of Global Gaming Operations. “Although video games are, in fact, games, for America’s military, they can be so much more.” (StatePoint)

stiffness during use, or during cold, damp weather, difficulty with activities like running and squatting, and swelling and inflammation around the joint. Additional symptoms may develop over time, including pain during rest, bone spurs, limping, and dull pain in the hip, knee or lower back due to changes in gait.

If you notice any of these symptoms, see a foot and ankle surgeon. Conservative treatments like shoe modifications, orthotic devices and physical therapy, may prevent or postpone the need for surgery. If you have mid- to end-stage arthritis in your foot or ankle, you may require next steps, such as ground-breaking cartilage regeneration treatment, implant surgery or the surgical removal of damaged cartilage and spurs, all of which have quick recovery periods.

“People with this disorder tend to suffer much longer than they need to,” says Dr. Butto. “They’re often pleasantly surprised when they find out their problem can be fixed.”

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease in which certain cells of the immune system malfunction and attack healthy joints. Foot problems caused by RA commonly occur in the ball of the foot near the toes, although RA can also affect other areas of the foot and ankle. The most common signs and symptoms are pain, swelling, joint stiffness and difficulty walking, as well as a range of deformities, including rheumatoid nodules, dislocated toe joints, hammertoes, bunions, heel pain, Achilles tendon pain and flatfoot ankle pain.

As part of a team that includes a primary doctor or rheumatologist, your foot and ankle surgeon will develop a treatment plan aimed at relieving associated pain, which may include orthotic devices, accommodative shoes, aspiration of fluid build-up and steroid injections. When RA produces foot pain and deformities not relieved through other treatments, surgery may be required.

“Listening to your body and seeing a foot and ankle surgeon are so important. With today’s scientific advances, treatment can reduce pain and restore you to your previous mobility, strength and functionality,” says Dr. Butto. How One Father’s Dream Empowered His Son To Drive Change

Strengthening communities is often a family affair. At least it is in the case of Alioune Thiam and his siblings.

Thiam, a senior systems engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS) who is now based in Minneapolis, doesn’t take his own education for granted. He was born and raised in a village in Senegal where many parents didn’t enroll their children in school, often due to a more pressing need for basic resources. His father, however, was a believer in the life-changing power of education and required his children to pursue it. Thiam would walk nearly 6 miles roundtrip to attend the nearest school from his home. Seeing this barrier his own children faced, Thiam’s father eventually established a local school for the village.

Thiam’s father passed away in 2016, and two years later, Thiam and his siblings founded KT & Fils, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting, supporting and funding education in their hometown village. The organization is named for their father, Kaiba Thiam, and “fils” which means “sons” in French.

Thiam learned about the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (ID&E) Innovation Fund, a micro-grant program that awards funding to AWS employees seeking to make a positive impact in underrepresented communities. With a colleague’s encouragement, Thiam applied last year on behalf of KT & Fils.

The ID&E Innovation Fund is one of the ways AWS scales its ID&E strategy globally. The organization has employees from all over the world, and they play a powerful role in advancing inclusion, diversity, and

equity in their local communities.

Thiam was one of the 28 AWS employees who received a grant to partner with nonprofits or support their own nonprofits to make a difference in marginalized communities worldwide. With the grant, KT & Fils was able to build a solar-powered water pump that serves the village of over 500 residents and its school of 150 students. Ready access to clean water means that students have fewer illness-related absences, the school has functioning bathrooms, and girls do not have to miss class due to lack of water in the bathroom, their menstrual cycles, or to collect water for their families.

Thanks to this basic resource, more students have enrolled and are able to be successful there, according to Thiam. However, he notes that there is still a lot more work to be

done, which is why as part of the third annual Innovation Fund this year, AWS chose to renew his project, along with four other recurring projects. With this continued support, KT & Fils will identify and address other pressing roadblocks to education access in the village.

Among the organization’s ideas are to establish a sustainable agricultural system, whereby the nonprofit can grow food for the students and school staff. They are also brainstorming ways to leverage tech for good by providing devices for students and building a virtual library.

“My father was the most generous and inspirational man I have ever known, and I feel grateful to continue his legacy and commitment to expanding access to education from thousands of miles away,” says Thiam. “We won’t rest until 100% of the kids in our area have the opportunity to go to school and 80% of them graduate from high school. We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to access education that will transform their lives.” (StatePoint)

How To Protect Your Favorite Outdoor Gear

With warmer weather here, more and more people are spending time on their decks, patios, and in their gardens and yards using outdoor products.

From grills to furniture to mowers, 88% of Americans have invested in products dedicated for outdoor use and 65% of those that have use them at least several times a week, according to an Allstate Protection Plans survey.

Unfortunately, 83% of those surveyed who own outdoor products have experienced damage to one or more of them.

That damage has been more than a little expensive: Americans have spent over $44 billion repairing or replacing their outdoor products.

“It’s no surprise that the outdoor products we use so much this time of year, that make life so great during the warmer months, can be especially vulnerable to damage,” says Jason Siciliano, vice president and global creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “What

some people may not realize is that the same protection plans that are available for indoor furniture, electronics and major appliances are also available for outdoor products.

They can be a great way to protect your investments in the great outdoors.”

The survey found that 65% of Americans do not have a protection plan for any of their outdoor products, and 56% were not even sure they could purchase one. With

American households spending hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of dollars a year on outdoor equipment, furniture and supplies, adding protection can be a smart idea.

Beyond purchasing protection plans, Siciliano also recommends taking steps to extend the life of your outdoor products.

For example, use the proper fuel in lawn care equipment, clean your grill and cover it when it’s not in

use, and apply protectant to furniture to guard against rust and sun damage.

For specialty items like fire pits and patio heaters, be sure to read the instruction manuals and follow the manufacturer’s care and maintenance recommendations.

Finally, at the end of the summer, store seasonal items in your garage or shed.

For more information about product protection, look for Allstate Protection Plans at your

favorite retailers.

You can also visit www.allstateprotectionplans.com, which features tips and resources for making the most of your outdoor products, as well as tips and advice on maintaining your home electronics and appliances.

“When we take care of the outdoor items that make summer enjoyable and relaxing, we’re also protecting ourselves against the expensive repairs that can pop up every spring if we don’t,” says Siciliano.

“That means more in our budgets for popsicles and lemonade.” (StatePoint)

Donate Plasma To Save Lives This Summer

Plasma donation is an impactful, meaningful way to give back to your community this summer. By donating plasma, you can help people like Machelle Pecoraro.

Pecoraro lives with Hereditary Angioedema (HAE), a rare disease that can cause attacks of swelling, and often pain, in specific parts of the body, including the stomach, hands, feet, arms, legs, genitals, throat and face.

Like with many serious and rare diseases, the therapies used to treat HAE require human plasma donations.

Donors’ Impact

“Plasma donors directly impact my ability to live a full and productive life.

Therapies made from these donations allow me and my son, who also lives with HAE, to receive ongoing treatment for our conditions,” says Pecoraro.

Plasma, a straw-colored liquid that carries red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, helps to maintain a steady level of blood pressure, supports the immune system and delivers critical nutrients to cells.

Plasma donations are used to replace crucial proteins people living with rare and serious diseases lack, and to produce therapies that treat diseases such as primary immune deficiencies, hereditary angioedema, hemophilia, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency and various bleeding and neurological disorders.

There is a critical and ongoing need for plasma donations, as these lifesaving medicines treat people in more than 100 countries around the world.

Every year, it takes more than 1,200 plasma donations to treat one hemophilia patient, more than 900 plasma donations to treat one

alpha-1 patient and more than 130 plasma donations to treat one primary immune deficiency patient.

“Plasma donors do the amazing, as plasma is used to develop lifesaving therapies for people living with rare and serious diseases.

We encourage those who can donate to visit a nearby CSL Plasma donation center,” says Rachpal Malhotra, MD, head of plasma donor safety, CSL Plasma.

Eligible, qualified plasma donors also receive payments in connection with donating plasma.

The Donation Process

To donate, you must be in good health, between the ages of 1874, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have had no tattoos or piercings within the last four months. You must also meet the health and screening requirements and have valid identification with a permanent address.

Although wait times may vary at each location, the collection process takes approximately 90 minutes after the first donation.

It is recommended that you drink four to six 8-ounce glasses of water, fruit juice or other caffeine-free liquid at least two to three hours before donation, avoid caffeinated beverages, avoid alcohol of any type for 24 hours beforehand, eat a meal prior to donation and get adequate sleep.

CSL Plasma has 320 plasma donation centers across the United States.

Visit cslplasma.com for more information and to find a center near you. The CSL Plasma donor app is also available for Apple and Android device users.

“I thank all donors and encourage anyone who is considering donating to remember that doing so does make an impact for people like me and my son,” says Pecoraro. (StatePoint)

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is a city in the hill country of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. Its name means “city on the plain (table land)” or “city of light”.

The city is the administrative capital of Nuwara Eliya District, with a picturesque landscape and temperate climate. It is at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is considered to be the most important location for tea production in Sri Lanka.

The city is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is known for its temperate, cool climate – the coolest area in Sri Lanka.

The city was founded by Samuel Baker, the explorer of Lake Albert and the upper Nile in 1846. Nuwara Eliya’s climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon.

Nuwara Eliya, called Little England, was a hill country retreat where the British colonialists could immerse themselves in their pastimes such as fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf and cricket.

Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Queen’s Cottage, General’s House, Grand Hotel, Hill Club, St Andrew’s Hotel and Town Post Office.

New hotels are often built and furnished in the colonial style. Visitors to the city can wallow in its nostalgia of bygone days by visiting the landmark buildings. Many private homes maintain their old English-style lawns and gardens.

Climate

Due to its highland location, Nuwara Eliya has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb), having no pronounced dry season, a monsoonlike cloudy season and with a mean annual temperature of 16 °C (61 °F).

In the winter months, there can be frost at night, but it warms up rapidly during the day because of the high sun angle.

The town’s attractions include the golf course, trout streams, Victoria Park, and boating or fishing on Lake Gregory. Victoria Park is an attractive and well-used oasis.

It is popular with birdwatchers at quieter times because of the good opportunities for seeing species,

particularly the Indian blue robin, pied thrush or scaly thrush lurking in the denser undergrowth. The Kashmir flycatcher is another attractive bird species in the park.

Galway’s Land Bird Sanctuary, close to Lake Gregory, is an area of montane forest a few kilometers east of the town. Covering an area of 0.6 km2 it is home to many bird and mammal species endemic to Sri Lanka, including wild boar and barking deer. The city is a base

for visits to Horton Plains National Park. This is a key wildlife area of an open grassy woodland. Species found here include the leopard, sambar, and the endemic purplefaced langur. Endemic highland birds include the dull-blue flycatcher, Sri Lanka white-eye, and yellow-eared bulbul.

The plains have a well-visited tourist attraction at World’s End — a sheer precipice with a 1050 m drop.

The return walk passes the scenic Baker’s Falls. Early morning visits are best, both to see the wildlife and to view World’s End before mists close in during the later part of the morning. One of the distinctive features of Nuwara Eliya’s countryside is the widespread growing of vegetables, fruit and flowers usually associated with temperate Europe.

This “Little England” is covered with terraces growing potatoes, carrots, leeks, and roses interspersed with tea bushes on the steeper slopes. The slow-growing tea bushes of this highland region produce some of the world’s finest orange pekoe tea. Several tea factories around Nuwara Eliya offer guided tours and the opportunity to sample or purchase their products.

‘Lovers Leap’ is a spectacular waterfall set among tea plantations a short walk from the town of Nuwara Eliya. It falls a height of 30m in a long cascading sheet of water. It is said that it is named after a young couple who decided to be bound together forever by jumping off the cliff to their demise.

Akbar And Birbal

Gold Coin And Justice

Just like any other day in King Akbar’s court, once Akbar asked Birbal, “My dear Birbal if I tell you to choose between justice and a gold coin, what will you choose?”

Without taking long to answer, Birbal replied, “My lord, I will choose a gold coin, without a doubt”.

Everyone including king Akbar was aghast at Birbal’s instant reply and thought that this time Birbal had fumbled for once. King Akbar said, “I am very disappointed in you.

Why would you choose something of lesser value like a gold coin over

something as valuable as justice?”

Birbal replied with a grin on his face, “My kind King, there is no dearth of justice because there is justice everywhere in your kingdom.

I felt no need to ask something that I have in abun-

dance but my lord, I surely fall short of money, and a gold coin would be nice”.

Listening to this reply, Akbar was speechless, but he had a big smile on his face. He felt overjoyed with the reply and rewarded Birbal with 100 gold coins.

Moral: One should choose one’s words wisely.

Tips To Tackle And Alleviate Symptoms For Lasting Relief

Warmer weather means flowers and trees are blooming, but for the millions of Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies, it also means coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion and other symptoms aren’t far behind.

Allergies, defined by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) as an immune reaction to a foreign substance, or allergen, can develop after an allergen is ingested, inhaled, injected or touched.

About one-quarter (25.7%) of adults suffer from seasonal allergies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which are commonly caused by grass, tree and weed pollens.

When allergies act up, many people reach for medications like antihistamines, decongestants and other over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for quick, yet temporary, symptom relief.

While symptoms may subside, there are side effects to prolonged use of OTC medicines such as dry mouth, drowsiness and blurred vision, among others.

Innovative alternatives, such as allergy immunotherapy, are now available from the convenience of a patient’s home.

This treatment offers more effective long-term relief compared to antihistamine pills, which only mask symptoms temporarily.

Sublingual immunotherapy is an effective option for people who don’t want the inconvenience or safety risk associated with allergy shots.

“More than 120 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergies and their related diseases, making it the most prevalent chronic illness facing our nation,” said Dr. Ken Chahine, Ph.D., J.D., founding CEO of Nectar Life Sciences.

“Nectar’s mission is to empower consumers with breakthrough so-

lutions that can put an end to allergies and, in turn, build healthier, more productive communities.”

To help combat symptoms this allergy season, which will be longer and more intense due to climate change, according to the AAFA, consider these tips for long-lasting symptom relief.

Recognize Allergy Symptoms

Although seasonal allergies typically affect the nose, eyes, mouth and sinuses, the symptoms and triggers can vary among individuals.

While itching in the roof of the mouth, hives and watery eyes are considered classic allergy symptoms, others may resemble signs of illness or infection, such as coughing, sneezing, congestion, body aches, pain or a stuffy or runny nose.

If these symptoms persist for a week or two, it is possible you are reacting to seasonal allergens.

Conversely, if you experience symptoms throughout the year, they might be caused by common allergens found in homes and workplaces, such as dust, mold or pet dander.

Reduce Exposure to Allergens Outdoors

The best way to avoid allergy symptoms is by eliminating or reducing exposure to triggers. In the

While allergen avoidance and OTC medications like antihistamines and decongestants can be effective, they may not work for everyone.

For those seeking an alternative to antihistamines, allergy immunotherapy offers a viable option. With more than 100 years of clinical practice, allergy immunotherapy has shown it can improve longterm quality of life.

more than 30 years but have only recently started to gain popularity in the U.S.,” said Dr. Shyam Joshi, MD, board certified allergist and immunologist and chief medical officer at Nectar Life Sciences.

case of seasonal allergies, the primary trigger is typically pollen.

This may require staying indoors on dry and windy days or choosing to go outside later in the day when pollen counts are generally lower. Before heading outside, check pollen forecasts and current levels in the area.

Rainfall helps clear pollen from the air, making rainy or cloudy days ideal for outdoor activities. However, many outdoor activities rely on clear and sunny weather.

In such situations, taking additional precautions becomes necessary. For instance, try wearing a face mask while performing outdoor chores like mowing, gardening or pulling weeds, which can stir up allergens.

It’s also important to refrain from hanging laundry outside, as pollen tends to adhere to linens and clothing. People should promptly remove clothes after being outside and take a bath to rinse off any pollen from the skin and hair.

Bringing allergens indoors, especially onto bedding, can worsen symptoms or prolong their duration.

Additionally, closing doors and windows when pollen counts are high is advisable.

Look for Long-Term Symptom Relief

The concept behind this therapy is to regularly expose the body to the allergen, gradually building immunity and reducing sensitivity, ultimately leading to fewer or even no allergy symptoms.

Sublingual immunotherapy is an innovative form of immunotherapy that is common in Europe and is now available in the U.S.

It involves taking two drops per day of a personalized prescription under the tongue to achieve the same long-term relief that allergy shots can provide.

Allergy care platform Nectar offers a comprehensive allergy treatment program that can be conducted from the comfort of a patient’s home.

The program begins with an athome allergy test, which is Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified and covers a wide range of indoor and outdoor allergens.

After carefully reviewing the test results and taking into account the patient’s clinical history and geographic location, a licensed provider determines the most suitable treatment option.

The personalized prescription is then delivered to the patient every three months. Over time, as the body builds tolerance to the allergens, symptoms generally diminish and fade away.

“Sublingual immunotherapy allergy drops have been used and studied extensively in Europe for

“Our allergy drops are unique from most others in the U.S. market because the allergen concentrations we use are higher than other allergy drops, which, based on scores of clinical studies conducted both in Europe and the U.S., are necessary to achieve clinical benefits and long-term relief.”

Keep Indoor Air Clean

To maintain allergen-free indoor spaces, it is advisable to refrain from opening windows in the house or car when pollen counts are high. However, there are other measures you can take to minimize exposure indoors.

Utilizing an air conditioner equipped with high-efficiency filters and adhering to regular maintenance schedules for heating and cooling systems are effective strategies.

Additionally, frequent dusting of countertops, shelves and tables is recommended, along with cleaning carpets using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Using a dehumidifier can help maintain dry indoor air and reduce the risk of mold growth.

Furthermore, consider installing portable air purifiers with built-in HEPA filters in bedrooms or frequently occupied rooms throughout the home.

Jet engine tech transfer

Earlier in the day, General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautical Limited announced they had signed a big-ticket MoU for the co-production in India of GE 414 Jet Engines for the Tejas Mk2 light combat aircraft.

U.S. officials who briefed journalists before the announcement appeared to be patting themselves on the back for the deal, with one official describing the Indian side as being “surprised and thrilled by the steps” the American side has been able to take to overcome bureaucratic roadblocks to the deal. India’s purchase of armed drones is also likely to be announced.

The Defence Ministries of the two countries

Among the big announcements from the private sector coinciding with the visit, U.S. semiconductor technology and chip maker Micron Technology, Inc said it would invest up to $825 million in a new chip assembly and test facility in Gujarat, which would be bolstered by investment from the Indian government and Gujarat State government totalling $2.75 billion in all.

In space cooperation, India is signing on to a framework of (so far) 25 countries for space exploration and cooperation.

The two countries have agreed on a framework for human spaceflight this year and have agreed a mission to the International Space Station in 2024.

After years of pandemic-induced visa slowdowns, the U.S. is announcing a pilot program to renew visas domestically (i.e., applicants do not have to travel outside to get their renewal stamp), for certain petitionbased temporary workers.

This program could expand to cover H1b and L skilled visas by 2024 and to other categories eventually.

It will also open two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. India will reopen its consulate in Seattle, and announce new consulates elsewhere. (Courtesy: https://www. thehindu.com/)

3 Items That Can Help You Elevate Your Morning Routine

A great morning routine makes getting out of bed more pleasant and sets the tone for a successful, happy day.

Whether you are a morning lark or a night owl, check out these items that can help you start your days on the right foot.

1. The perfect cup of coffee: Most people think they are satisfied with their morning cup of coffee, that is, until they try Nextmug, a smart, self-heating mug that keeps beverages warm (130 degrees F), hot (140 degrees F) or piping hot, (150 degrees F) depending on the setting selected.

Lab testing has shown that liquid in a standard ceramic mug loses 52% of its heat over a two-hour period.

Nextmug loses no heat over that same time frame, making it possible to savor coffee or tea for as long as it takes to drink it.

If you have ever resorted to microwaving a forgotten morning brew, which can turn even the best drink bitter, or have simply slugged it down tepid, you will appreciate this sleek, ergonomic, easy-to-use mug.

Plus, its optional spill-resistant lid means that you can take your cup of joe throughout the home or office, on the back deck, or wherever you would most enjoy it. For more information, visit https://nextmug.com/.

2. A closer shave: Men can say goodbye to nicks and patchy facial hair.

Offering a close shave, even on a dense beard, Braun’s Series 9 Pro Electric Shaver features sensors that adjust power to beard density, and a precision switch to capture tricky hair.

Because its built-in sonic technology yields a more efficient shave, and its docking station automatically charges and cleans the razor, you’ll be giving yourself the gift of more time for yourself in the morning.

3. Music and podcasts on-the-go:

Add entertainment and motivation to morning workouts with comfortable, durable headphones.

Just be sure to consider your needs when selecting the right pair.

Whereas bone conduction headphones offer the safety of being able to hear surrounding sounds, which is great for morning jogs and

commutes, air conduction offers the best shockfree comfort.

Finally in-ear style headphones can isolate outside noise when it’s desired, such as at the gym.

The X9-pro, allows users to switch between these three

modes.

It’s also completely waterproof and Bluetooth-connected, so you can listen to your favorite jams and podcasts, even when swimming laps at the pool.

And thanks to its 32G storage, you won’t get bored with his listening options.

For brighter, more efficient mornings, find gear that elevates your routine. (StatePoint)

Budget-Friendly Outdoor Projects For Any DIYer

Want to transform your outdoor space while saving money? There are plenty of handson projects you can do yourself to eliminate expensive labor costs. The following ideas can be tailored to your budget and personal preferences:

Install a Party Pad

Make your backyard more fun and functional with a low-maintenance patio for entertaining and relaxing. Based on your budget and experience level, there are a variety of styles and materials to choose from, such as brick, concrete and stone. You’ll also need gravel to create a sturdy foundation.

If you’re building on an existing lawn, clear out the grass and dirt first and dig an area deep enough, so the new surface will be even with the ground.

Once you’ve prepped the ground and poured the gravel, use sand to hold the blocks in place and fill any gaps between the blocks once the layout is complete. Search online for step-by-step installation instructions and use a project calculator to determine the cost. Increase Seating Capacity

A built-in seating wall near a fire pit, pool or patio offers more places to lounge and adds depth to the space.

There are plenty of DIY-friendly materials to build with, including interlocking concrete blocks, which won’t need to be recut and are heavy enough to stay in place without cement, or larger, flat stones that look more natural and can be laid in various ways.

If you use concrete blocks, add capstones as top piece to give the design a finished look. Watch tutorials online before starting the project for inspiration and to ensure you

complete all the necessary steps.

Repair Over Replace

Fix up something old to make it new. If you have an above-ground pool or spa with a slow leak, easily repair it with the highlyrated T-Rex Waterproof Tape. The tape has a waterproof backing enhanced with R-Flex Technology for greater durability.

You’ll need weather-resistant wood slats, like cedar wood, fence posts, a drill, screws and paint or stain.

Use your “eyesore” to determine how tall to make the screen. Then, anchor fence posts into the ground and drill your first slat about an inch above the ground.

It’s also UV-resistant, can stretch up to 700% of its original length and is strong enough to be used underwater.

Locate the leak and then measure and cut a piece of tape with scissors (this tape is too tough to tear by hand). Remove the liner from the back and apply it to the crack to form a leak-proof seal. Press down firmly and smooth any creases by hand.

Hide Outdoor Eyesores

A privacy screen is an easy project for beginner DIYers and will hide unsightly air conditioning units, garbage bins and utility boxes.

Continue adding boards all the way up. For air conditioning units, leave space between each slat to ensure proper air circulation. Add a finish—dark for a modern style or clear for a natural look—and enjoy. Give it a Glow Use lighting to give your backyard a bistro-like atmosphere. Rather than using a drill to hang solar or string lights, use transparent, double-sided T-Rex Clear Mounting Tape to permanently and discreetly decorate.

Whether placing the lights across wooden beams or on brick or vinyl fencing, make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying the tape. Stick one side to the surface and the other to mount the lights. The adhesive will build over time, achieving full strength after a 24-hour period.

Once you tackle these budget-friendly DIY projects, you’ll be ready to relax in your outdoor oasis. (StatePoint)

The Kerala Story Movie Review : Adah Sharma Delivers A Brave And Poignant Performance In A Thought-Provoking Film

‘The Kerala Story’ narrates the tales of three young girls from various regions of Kerala, with the primary focus on the story of Shalini, who is abducted and subsequently converted to Islam. Shalini is then radicalized. and compelled to join ISIS as a terrorist.

‘The Kerala Story’ is centered around the alleged radicalization and conversion of young Hindu women to Islam in Kerala, after which they are forced to join ISIS.

The film states that it’s a true story of three young girls from different parts of Kerala.

‘The Kerala Story’ begins in the interrogation room where Shalini (Adah Sharma) is revealing details of her horrific and tragic past and the reason why she is in a situation of crisis.

Her backstory revolves around four college students who have enrolled in a Nursing School in Kasargauda, Kerala.

The story is narrated from the perspective of Shalini, who shares a deep bond with her roommates Gitanjali (Siddhi Idnani), Nimah (Yogita Bihani), and Asifa (Sonia Balani).

Unbeknownst to others, Asifa has a secret agenda to expose and convert her roommates to Islam.

With the assistance of her male as-

sociates from outside, she ensures that the girls are radicalized and indoctrinated into the religion using hallucinogenic drugs.

After Shalini becomes pregnant, she is compelled to marry someone other than the man who impregnated her, and then embarks on a long journey to Syria via Pakistan and Afghanistan.

‘Gulmohar’ To Open 20th Indian Film Festival Stuttgart

The family drama film ‘Gulmohar’, which stars Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee, is all set to open the 20th Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, in July, 2023 in Germany.

of the world in Germany.

My previous film, ‘Azaad’, won the best short at the festival in 2017, and it’s lovely to go back to

resonate so deeply with audiences worldwide.

We had exciting screenings in New York last month and will be travelling to Stuttgart and Berlin in July and the rest of the world this year.”

‘Gulmohar’ follows the final days of the Batra family living in their 31-year-old family home which is set to be demolished to make way for a new high rise complex.

As they are about to move to a new city and new life, the family explores their relationship, delving deeper into their memories, leading to a whirlwind of emotions.

Adah Sharma’s portrayal of Shalini who eventually renamed Fatima, is powerful and emotionally stirring.

Her hard work in getting the Malayali accent right, is evident on screen.

While many of the actors, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani are newcomers, they put their best foot forward to bring their stories to life.

Director Sudipto Sen has opted for a subject that’s both sensitive and complex and the treatment that has been meted out to the film makes it a difficult watch with several disturbing scenes, moments and dialogues.

In the movie, the director has successfully created moments that evoke a natural uneasiness among viewers.

While handling sensitive subject matters, it can be challenging to strike a balance, but Sudipto appears to handle it with ease. Prasantanu Mohaptra has done an excellent job of capturing the

scenes in Afghanistan and the border regions of Afghanistan-Pakistan.

However, the background score of the film falls short. It is overpowering and distracts from the narrative.

The hostel scenes featuring the girls are well executed, but there are also dull and uninteresting moments in the film, particularly when Asifa attempts to brainwash and radicalize Shalini.

It is important to exercise caution during the extremely disturbing rape scene in the ISIS slave camp. At certain points, the film feels more like a tutorial of radicalization than entertainment for the audience.

It also goes to extremes to make its point, and that could be quite unsettling for audiences belonging to various communities in our country.

After watching ‘The Kerala Story,’ you may be left with several questions about the current state of the country.

This thought-provoking film is disturbing and surely manages to leave an impact. (Courtesy: https:// timesofindia.indiatimes.com/)

Expressing his delight about the film’s opening in Stuttgart, director Rahul V. Chittella said: “I’m so excited that ‘Gulmohar’ has been chosen to open the prestigious Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart, which is in its 20th year of championing soulful stories from our part

the festival with a film as special as ‘Gulmohar’”.

He continued: “It is truly heartening to see all the love and appreciation pouring in from all corners of the globe and seeing this special film about family and home

’Gulmohar’ is a Star Studios production, made in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Autonomous Works.

Co-written by Rahul Chittella and Arpita Mukherjee, ‘Gulmohar’ is currently streaming on the OTT platform. (indiatimes.com/)
