Tips For Surviving The First 5 Years Of Small Business Ownership What motivates entrepreneurs to become self-employed?

A new survey examining these very questions provides important insights to small business owners and those looking to start their entrepreneurial journey.

measure. Having tangible and intangible benchmarks of achievement can help you stay focused. 2. Know your “why”: According to the survey, one of the strongest motivators for starting a small business is the belief that it provides greater flexibility and control when you’re your own boss (45%).

“The Tipping Point: Making the Jump to Self-Made” report from global small business platform Xero surveyed 1,200 small business owners nationwide and, among respondents, 58% gave themselves five years or less to make it or break it - with newer businesses giving themselves an even shorter timespan on average.

Passion/purpose in work (28%) and financial reasons (15%) were also strong motivators. Running a business can be tremendously satisfying when you understand what your “tipping point” was for taking a leap of faith and venturing out on your own.

How do they measure success? What’s their cutoff for profitability and self-reflection on status?

Here are some of the survey’s key findings, along with tips for surviving your first five years of small business ownership: 1. Define what success looks like:

When they made the move to branch out on their own, 48% of small business owners defined success as achieving profitability, and 34% defined it as making more money than they were previously. Fast forward to the present with their businesses up and running and 28% of business owners cite creating a legacy as their success

3. Be flexible: Twenty-nine percent of small business owners say the pandemic has increased their desire to run a business, particularly among younger business owners (43% of Gen Z vs. 18% of Boom-

ers) and women (34% of women vs. 24% of men). But what do those businesses that thrived in the COVID-19 era have in common? “The majority of newer businesses have been set up on technology platforms and digitally enabled since their inception,” says Ben Richmond, US country manager for Xero. “They’re ready for and in many cases even expecting disruption, so they’ve established afoundation that’s open to pivots.” 4. Be realistic: While most business owners say they started their business for increased flexibility and control, being the boss doesn’t equate to less stress. In fact, that’s the biggest misconception about starting a business (47%). Another top misconception is that starting a business will be more fun than working for someone else (25%). Understanding the realities of entrepreneurship can help you

avoid surprises, and ensure comfort in the role as it changes. 5. Lean on digital tools: When you’re a small business owner, it can often seem like there are never enough hours in the day. Using software that streamlines the nittygritty can free your time so it’s better spent on the big picture. For example, the cloud-based accounting software platform Xero gives small business owners and their advisors access to real-time financial data on any device. Its 2.45 million subscribers are leveraging its array of tools that simplify tasks like paying bills, payroll, claiming expenses and sending invoices. To view the full report and for more information, visit xero.com. “It’s certainly been an unusual year for business, but entrepreneurs are generally feeling positive about the economic outlook in the months ahead. For enterprises still in the make-it-or-break-it period, that’s especially good news,” says Richmond. (StatePoint)

Hindu Charities for America (HC4A) is partnering with Navya Care, to send high-quality oxygen concentrators to underserved COVID-19 patients in India. Several FedEx 777 charter planes have landed in India with over eighty-one thousand kilos of medical supplies, oxygen concentrators, and over three hundred thousand N95 masks. The campaign, HC4O2 (Hindu Charities for Oxygen), is raising funds to ensure a speedy and reliable supply of oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies for maximum impact during this emergency. “We were collectively hurting to

Navya Care as they had already figured out the sourcing, transport, and distribution of oxygen concentrators. It’s a relief to see the concentrators already at work at hospitals throughout the country”, says Gulshan Singh, Vice-President

These oxygen concentrators are state-of-the-art, INOGEN GEN 5 made in the USA and subsidized to fifty percent of the price; freight carriers are transporting supplies at no-cost agreements. One oxygen concentrator can be used by sixty patients for one month.

Navya Care is working with Tata Memorial Centre and the National Cancer Grid network of over two hundred hospitals across India to ensure no delays in access to supplies once they reach India. Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Deputy Director of Epidemiology, Tata Memorial Centre congratulated us saying “Great job team for smooth job.

Dr. Pramesh, Coordinator of the National Cancer Grid, said: “We are collecting requests for equipment and consumables from hospitals across the NCG, and mapping the current incidence of Covid-19 infections to determine where the greatest needs are and prioritizing government and charitable organizations to finalize the allocation.” These concentrators will be distributed across Goa, Delhi, As-

YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

Let the City of Austin know how it can better serve you and your family by taking our public survey.

How To Show Your Gratitude For Nurses Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, countless lives were saved thanks to nurses, who sacrificed their time, health and even the joys of family to serve others and protect their loved ones. “All healthcare workers, but especially nurses, carried this country through a historic

period in modern medicine and there are no words to describe the depth of gratitude we owe them,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and CEO of Interim HealthCare Inc., the nation’s leading franchise network of home healthcare, personal care, healthcare staffing and hospice services. “As a healthcare leader and fellow nurse, I believe the most meaningful way to express our appreciation is to advocate for nurses on issues that reward their efforts, protect their safety and health, and elevate their profession.” Sheets is offering the following ideas for tangible ways that individuals, communities and the healthcare ecosystem can show gratitude to and advocate for nurses:

• Healthcare companies can advocate for the essential worker status of all home healthcare providers and assure access to necessary protective equipment for themselves and their patients. • Federal and state-level payors can increase reimbursement rates for nurses, which remain low. They can also provide proper compensation and other creative solutions, such as staff bonuses and hazard pay, so that healthcare professionals can continue their tireless, frontline high-impact care our communities deserve. “Our goal as an industry should remain steadfastly focused on trying to find budgetbalanced ways to ensure pay is reflective of patient outcomes,” says Sheets. • Whether you’re a patient or client served

by nurses, a nurse who would like to extend gratitude to past or current mentors, a healthcare leader wishing to thank their team, or simply a member of the community, you can visit Interim HealthCare’s digital Wall of Gratitude at ihcnursesweek2021.com/message-wall to post a note of appreciation and to celebrate nurses. • As more complex care is enabled in the home due to advanced clinical training and technology, school boards, community colleges and universities can increase knowledge among nursing students about careers in the home health industry. They can also make nursing students aware of the many professional benefits home-based positions provide, including flexible and predictable schedules, and the opportunity to foster a deeper connection with patients while having fuller visibility into their health through one-on-one care. • To inspire future generations of nurses, teachers and parents are encouraged to leverage Interim HealthCare’s history of nursing lesson plans featuring nursing pioneer, Florence Nightingale who helped shape the profession into what it is today. These are available at ihcnursesweek2021.com. “Many nursing programs don’t even offer a home health rotation, which prevents students from exploring the wide range of exciting and rewarding career opportunities home-based care offers,” says Sheets. As the nation’s first home care company, Interim HealthCare continues to innovate the care delivery process. For more information on careers, visit ihcmadeforthis.com. To see current openings, visit, interimhealthcare. com/careers. “This last year has been unyielding in its demand on nurses, impacting every facet of their lives,” says Sheets. “As thanks, we invite the community at large to join us in doing our part to provide nurses with the tangible support and advocacy they need to thrive in their jobs.” (StatePoint)

Do You Have What It Takes To Be In The Peace Corps? Are you an older adult looking for your next big adventure? The Peace Corps is encouraging U.S. adult citizens to volunteer their service abroad to promote world peace and friendship. While the Peace Corps temporarily suspended volunteer operations at all posts in March 2020 due to COVID-19, the agency is working to return to service and is accepting applications. In time for Older Americans Month in May, a legacy of the John F. Kennedy presidential administration along with the Peace Corps itself, here’s what to know:

Experiences Vary Widely Partnering with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges, the Peace Corps has served in 61 countries globally. Volunteers serve in such sectors as education, health, youth in development, agriculture, community, economic development, environment and Peace Corps response. Over 240,000 American citizens -- 13,898 of whom served over the age of 50 -- have served in the Peace Corps since it was established 60 years ago in 1961. Recent older American volunteer experiences have ranged from working closely with a wom-

According to Peace Corps officials and returned volunt e e r s , not only are older Americ a n s uniquely qualified to serve because of their perspectives and experiences, they are viewed and respected as an asset to their new communities. They’re also recognized back home. Indeed, now through May 23, the Peace Corps is accepting nominations for the Lillian Carter Award, which honors the contributions that older adults bring to

service. Established in 1986, the award is named for former President Jimmy Carter’s mother, Lillian Carter, who served as a health volunteer in India in 1966 at age 68. Awardees have demonstrated a commitment to civic engagement and service, advancing the Peace Corps’ mission of promoting world peace and friendship and strengthening Americans’ understanding of the world and its people. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. EST on Zoom. Getting Started There is no upper age limit to Peace Corps service and many volunteers have served into their 80s. Interested applicants can connect with a recruiter to learn more and get the application process started by visiting peacecorps.gov. While experiences in the Peace Corps are as unique as the individuals and communities involved, building friendships and working locally to address pressing challenges serves as a fulfilling second act for many older Americans, giving volunteers a way to embrace a new purpose in retirement or following other careers.(StatePoint)

How To Treat On-The-Go Stains Whether it’s spilling a to-go coffee on your stark white shirt or dropping your blush brush in your lap, stains can happen any-

where at any time, even to the most poised among us. But how -- and when -- you deal with the stain can impact whether your garment survives the snafu. While spills that occur at home can instantly and easily be treated by flushing the garment under cold water (don’t use hot water as it can cause the stain to set), when you’re on-the-go, you’ll need a fast solution that doesn’t require a wardrobe change. One convenient way to ensure your clothes stay good as new, come what may, is by keeping a stain remover pen with you. For an effective option that’s safe for all colorfast, washable fabrics and doesn’t leave a residue, try the OxiClean On the Go Stain Remover pen. Recommended by 91% of reviewers, according to PowerReviews, it works great on common food, drink and makeup stains, tackling anything from spaghetti to soy sauce in two steps:

1. Remove excess residue from the stain and place a napkin behind the fabric.

A good quality stain removal pen can save the day, but only if you’re prepared.

2. Squeeze the pen, and use its scrubber tip like an eraser to eliminate the stain.

To be ready for every situation, consider keeping a stain remover pen in your desk or workplace, in your everyday purse or bag, and in your carry-on suitcase when you travel. (StatePoint)

Mutton Pulao From A Pakistani Kitchen A Conversation Of Thoughts By Sumaiya Malik I bought my inexpensive slow cooker from Walmart over eight years ago and still hold on to it. I chose mine when a friend pointed out that the cooking pot inside was metal and not ceramic and hence could be taken out and put directly on the stove to brown the onions for mutton pulao, a Pakistani rice and meat dish cooked as frequently as mac and cheese or burgers in in our home. I have never been great at cooking. I need my book of recipes even if I have cooked something multiple times. I multi-task and forget ingredients, and sometimes burn food because I forget to turn on the timer. One meal that I can bank on that will make my friends and family happy every single time is the mutton pulao that I cook in the slow cooker. It’s a recipe at the back of my hand and I know that the slow cooker will save it from overcooking. Growing up, I never paid attention to cooking. I’d notice the hustle and bustle from morning to evening when our cook and my mother would be in the kitchen and the fresh aroma of mutton curry, the base of the pulao would waft into the dining room where I’d have some project for school going on. Early one morning, Howard began experiencing weakness in her arm and leg. While she decided to skip practice that day, she didn’t think too much of it. When her roommate told her trainer why Howard wasn’t at practice and what she was experiencing, he called her and noticed she didn’t sound right on the phone. He went straight to her apartment, and after realizing something was very wrong, he immediately called 911 and she was rushed to the emergency room. According to the American Stroke Association, African Americans have a higher prevalence of stroke and the highest death rate from stroke than any other racial group. Among stroke survivors, African Americans are more likely to be disabled and have difficulties doing daily activities.

Your Most Pressing Asthma Questions Addressed More than 25 million people in the United States are living with asthma, amounting to about 1 in 13 people. Asthma is a lifelong chronic lung disease that causes difficulty breathing and often limits regular daily activities. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Recently, the American Lung Association provided a series of patientfocused asthma webcasts featuring clinical speakers, Cindy Fiske and Aliciee Griffith, registered nurses and patient engagement liaisons with GlaxoSmithKline. This is what they had to say about understanding, managing and living with asthma. Q: What recommendations would you make to newly-diagnosed patients and caregivers? A: Everyone can benefit from asthma education. It’s a good idea for those newly-diagnosed to have a conversation with their doctor about asthma basics, as well as to

learn the type and severity of their asthma, which will guide their treatment. It’s important to understand that asthma is a chronic (long-term) disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the

How To Avoid Unexpected Fees From Subscription Or Recurring Services What may have started as a deal too good to pass up could end up costing you for months to come. Costly subscription services could be charging your debit or credit card monthly and if you don’t keep close tabs on your accounts, you may not even be aware.

ers aren’t paying enough attention to the fine print or their bank statements to know they’re racking up recurring charges based on a onetime purchase.”

The hook may come in the form of an advertisement for a product or service with a surprisingly low price or a promise for goods at just the cost of shipping. But once you provide your card information and place your order, you’ve signed yourself up for a monthly or recurring fee buried in the fine print. “It’s always important to evaluate why something seems too good to be true,” said Joseph Grant, operations group manager for Card Loss Prevention at PNC’s Customer Care Center. “In some cases these merchants are counting on the fact that consum-

tips to help you avoid or identify trials that could turn into a recurring charge. • Research what you are buying and who you are buying from. An internet search will likely reveal if others have had negative experiences with a merchant. • Read the fine print on all purchases before finalizing your order. Be on the lookout for any language about recurring or subscription fees. • Watch for check boxes that may enroll you in subscription services or additional marketing. • Save any emails confirming your order, which will likely note any important dates or upcoming charges. • Keep tabs on email for any notifications about an upcoming subscription charge.

• Investigate the merchant’s customer service practices. If it’s not easy to get in touch with them, they’re likely not someone you want to do business with. • Find out how easy it is to cancel or unsubscribe from a service before you make a purchase. • Monitor your bank statements and review account activity. • Contact the merchant quickly to help prevent additional charges if you discover that you have incurred a subscription-related charge and would like to cancel. “The biggest key is just to be aware, both of what you’re signing up for as well as what is happening with money in your account on an ongoing basis,” Grant said. “When all parties are transparent, it makes for a better experience for everyone.” (StatePoint)

6 Ways To Tell If You Have Enough Life Insurance If we’ve learned anything from 2020, it’s that life can be unpredictable. Having sufficient life insurance can provide financial stability and security to loved ones during times of uncertainty.

3. Do you have dependents? A dependent is someone who relies on your income to make ends meet. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average cost of raising a child through age 17 is $233,610, not including the cost of a college education. That’s a big strain.

Forty-one million Americans say they need life insurance but don’t have it, according to LIMRA’s 2020 Insurance Barometer Study. Others are insured but don’t have enough coverage. If this describes you, your spouse or children could find themselves in a financial lurch, expected to pay off debts, loans and final expenses when you die, especially if you’re the main source of income. “Having insurance isn’t just about financial protection,” says Louis Colaizzo, senior vice president of Erie Family Life. “It also helps maintain some sense of normalcy for family members. Kids can continue their extracurricular activities, partners can maintain their lifestyle and families can stay in the home they know and love.”

ceries? If not, your spouse or dependents might find themselves struggling, putting them at risk for foreclosure or other financial hardships.

1. Do you have enough to cover final expenses? Make sure you can accommodate funeral or burial expenses, end-of-life costs or unpaid medical bills. Otherwise, your family may be responsible for paying these. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the national median cost of

2. Will your family receive enough to cover income loss or debt? If you’re your household’s primary earner, you’ll want to ensure you have enough money to maintain your family’s lifestyle. For example, can your policy help pay off a mortgage or multiple car loans in full or cover expenses like gro-

4. What kind of retirement do you want? How do you guarantee you’ll have enough for the future and won’t need a second career late in life to cover living expenses? One way is to tap into the cash value of a permanent life insurance plan and use it as supplemental income during retirement. 5. Do you have unique lifestyle considerations? Do you own a business or want to leave a legacy when you’re gone? Having an in-

surance plan will protect these assets and give you peace of mind that your money goes exactly where you want it. 6. What if your circumstances change (again)? Some life insurance companies, including Erie Family Life, offer a Guaranteed Insurability Option rider to help with the quickly changing times, making it possible for you to purchase additional insurance later, even if circumstances deem you “uninsurable.” This means the death benefit can be increased as your needs change but you won’t have to answer medical underwriting questions – a relief for many. To revisit your life insurance policy, contact an independent Erie Insurance agent who can discuss your personal options by visiting erieinsurance.com. According to experts, one of the easiest ways to protect loved ones and their financial futures is to prepare for the unexpected. (StatePoint)

“It’s incredibly exciting to offer the Spanishspeaking community an easy-to-use tool to monitor the aspects of their disease most important to them,” says Daniel Hernandez, MD, director of Medical Affairs and Hispanic Outreach, CreakyJoints and CreakyJoints Español. “We know that patients who are educated about their disease and actively participate in shared decision making with their providers have improved health outcomes.”

Currently, 4.4 million Hispanic Americans live with some form of doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. While the prevalence of arthritis among Hispanics is less than non-Hispanic whites, they are more than twice as likely to become disabled from arthritis and experience joint damage. These statistics are a testament to the fact that health disparities in Hispanic communities, including adequate access to healthcare and information, far predate the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is that when it comes to arthritis, efforts are being made to close the health gap and amplify the voices of Hispanic Americans. CreakyJoints Español and CreakyJoints, the multicultural digital arthritis communities for patients and caregivers worldwide, has created ArthritisPower Español, a free patient-centered research registry available entirely in Spanish for people living with joint, bone and inflammatory skin conditions, like arthritis. ArthritisPower Español invites Spanish speakers, many of whom self-identify as Hispanic, to proactively participate in their disease management and contribute to a better understanding of life with arthritis. Available as a free mobile and desktop application, ArthritisPower first launched in English in 2015 and now includes more than 30,000 people who track their symptoms and treatment experiences using the same

After spending six years using a cane, Martínez now walks without one and exercises every afternoon in the pool, thanks to her proactive and continuous efforts working with her doctor to find the best ways of managing her chronic condition. She plans to use ArthritisPower Español as part of her disease management. “This tool will allow me to stay on top of how my symptoms ebb and flow over time and then I can share that data with my doctor, helping us both keep my arthritis under control. Using the disease-tracking measures and participating in studies is easy and takes just a few minutes each week,” she says. To learn more and to join AthritisPower Español for free, visit ArthritisPower.org.es. To learn more about CreakyJoints, visit creakyjoints.org or CJES.org (for Spanish-language). More than a disease of older adults, arthritis affects over 50 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds, and thanks to new tools, a greater number of patients will be able to proactively participate in their disease management, helping address long-term health disparities. “Open” Signs Take On New Meaning For Small Business Owners (Continued From Page 01) As part of an effort to amplify these

inspiring stories, Wells Fargo has commissioned three artists to design custom “open” signs for businesses that persevered and is also pointing entrepreneurs to resources that can help. Dedicated to showcasing women and diverse voices, illustrator and

graphic designer Sophia Yeshi, is paired with Roxtography, a woman-owned business based near

the Colville Reservation, outside of Seattle. Owner Roxanne Best shifted from in-person yoga and photography classes to outdoor stand-up paddleboarding classes and photography that embodies her love of nature. Precision Productions, a new rent-

al music studio, was just about to open its doors when the pandemic hit. Optimistic owner Kasey Phillips, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago, pivoted to a hybrid in-person and virtual studio model, never wavering from his plan to expand the music scene and own his first studio.

which focuses on offering diverse food truck owners and caterers access to a commercial kitchen.

Taking cues from music while paying homage to Phillips’s Caribbean roots, Korean-born illustrator Deborah Lee, known for her use of bold, vivid colors, is interpreting how Precision Productions made a way to stay open.

Aleman will combine her art with a shared dedication to feeding the community as she depicts PREP Atlanta’s grit.

“As an artist, it was rewarding to support not just a small business that stayed open in tough economic conditions, but one that’s a platform for creativity,” says Lee. Writer, illustrator, visual artist and community organizer Gabriela Alemán has a passion for helping combat food insecurity. With her comics and pop art aesthetic, she’s working to bring the mission of PREP Atlanta to life,

During the pandemic, PREP Atlanta was a venue for keeping the city’s restaurant and food industry afloat, including for many Blackowned businesses.

This project comes on the heels of the July 2020 announcement of the Wells Fargo Open for Business Fund, a roughly $420 million small business recovery effort providing grants to nonprofits that serve small business owners. The fund was created by donating all gross processing fees from Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans made in 2020. The company has also committed not to take a profit from the second round of PPP. Overall, the Open for Business Fund is expected to

translate into roughly $1 billion in available financing and 7.5 million hours of technical assistance for small business owners, helping them close the gap on rent, utilities and employee pay, while accessing expertise to adapt for the future. To learn more about available support or to download an artistic “Open” sign, entrepreneurs can visit wellsfargo.com/together. “Today ‘open’ signs represent much more than they used to, embodying the ingenuity required to pivot in this ever-evolving economy,” says Jenny Flores, head of Small Business Growth Philanthropy at Wells Fargo. “We are inspired every day by small business owners pushing through these tough times, particularly those who have been hard hit. This effort aims to shine a light on stories of resilience so entrepreneurs can learn from each other and seek the resources needed to keep their dreams alive.” (StatePoint)

Safely Returning To Diabetes Care One Visit At A Time Collectively, we’ve all paused to assess and adjust as we navigate a new normal amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, yet understandably, this has included a pause in consistent medical care for some. Nearly half of Americans surveyed by the Kaiser Family Foundation say they or a family member have skipped or delayed medical care because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to worsening conditions for many. Among people with diabetes, according to an American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Thrivable survey, almost half delayed seeking the routine medical care they need to manage their condition during the pandemic, mainly because they feared COVID-19 exposure. Yet delaying care and not regularly seeing a healthcare provider can increase the risk for serious complications for people with diabetes. Furthermore, the Journal

of the American Medical Association reports that the added stress from COVID-19 and avoiding the

doctor can have tremendous psychological effects on people with diabetes that can ultimately impact how they manage their condition. That’s why it’s important to know there are options to return to care safely, including in-person and telehealth visits. If you or a loved one lives with diabetes, developing

a plan to safely return to care and resume consistent visits with your health care providers to check A1C levels can help maintain appropriate treatm e n t and care. Contact y o u r healthcare prov i d e r ’s office to determine which type of visit, whether in-person or telehealth, is right for your return to care. In-Person Visits During an in-person appointment, you and your healthcare provider can discuss A1C levels, diabetes management and treatment plans

in the office as usual. If you are going to an in-person appointment, ask the office about its current process and recommendations for returning. The CDC also has guidelines to protect yourself during the visit, including interacting with as few people as possible, keeping at least six feet of distance between you and others, wearing a mask and washing hands frequently. Telehealth Visits Telehealth services have emerged as a way to triage, evaluate, and care for patients without relying on in-person visits. During the pandemic, 40 percent of people with diabetes reported telehealth services made it easier to manage their diabetes, according to the ADA. You should ask your doctor’s office whether an in-person visit or a tele-

health visit is best for you. During a telehealth visit, you can talk to your healthcare provider about A1C levels, diabetes management and your treatment plans as usual. To inform this more holistic conversation, you should get your A1C tested at an on-site facility or use an at-home A1C test. For more tips and resources on how to prepare for a telehealth appointment, visit https://lillydiabetes. com/telehealth. It can also be helpful to connect with those who share your experiences. Join the conversation and encourage others to return to care by sharing how you’re safely returning to your regular healthcare visits to manage your diabetes – whether in-person or virtually – using #ReturnToA1C on social media. The Dash For PCR Covid-19 Test For Travel

(Continued from page 1)

Mayo Clinic, a fluid sample is collected with a nasal swab or a throat swab, or you may spit into a tube to produce a saliva sample.

This means that if you want to ensure that the results are ready before the flight, you probably will have to take the test more than 48 hours before. Additionally, a home printout of the emailed results does not show all the details required by the airline. A traveler will have to dash to the test location for a printout with all details.

Results in Austin usually take 24 to 48 hours. PCR tests are very accurate when properly performed by a health care professional and cannot be substituted for the rapid test in case of international travel. If you plan to travel internationally, you will need to show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight.

Many travelers are rethinking plans. Vacationing within the U.S. seems to be the to-go option, but for those who have no choice but to proceed, the race and dash are part and parcel of the game.

The Center for Disease Control recommends delaying international travel until you are fully vaccinated.

Here are some facts to help you through PCR testing.

Please check your airline requirements at least three days before departure to avoid being sent home from the airport. Be prepared to follow all these requirements even if you have proof of vaccination.

The FDA approved PCR test, a COVID-19 test, detects genetic material of the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). According to

Acceptable test results for Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways must be in the form of written documentation (paper). Picture shows an example of the PCR Test form. Every lab can have a different form, but the information required on the form will be the same. The documentation must include: 1. Type of test 2. Entity issuing the result (e.g., laboratory, healthcare entity, or telehealth service) 3. Specimen collection date. A negative test result must show the specimen was collected within the 2 days before the flight. 4. Information that identifies the person (full name plus at least one other identifier such as date of birth or passport number) 5. Test Result 6. A stamp of the testing authority.

The “cool” people only ate with a fork. They could balance everything in the slender tines, and the “uncool” would use a tablespoon. The balancing act and the side

Golden brown onions in grapeseed oil. 2. Tarka of Zeera seeds until fragrant 3. Add ginger and garlic. Fry for a bit until fragrant and add the tomato. 4. Now add all the mutton, Shaan masala and other sabut garam masalas. Stir until meat opaque. Move the cooking pot to the base of the slow cooker.

5. Add 1 ½ cups of boiling water and let it cook on low heat for at least two hours. Check for tenderness. Once meat is tender, move the cooking pot back to the stove, increase heat, add ¾ cups of washed unsoaked basmati rice. 6. Cook rice on high heat uncovered for ten minutes making sure there is enough water until rice absorbs it and is slightly tender. Add water as needed. Cover the rice with a wet paper towel, cover and move the cooking pot back to the slow cooker base for “dum,” on low setting for 15 minutes to ½ hour. My family likes meat, so my meat ratio is on the higher side. My friends say the flavor is great because of this ratio.

Tips For A Safer, More Enjoyable Summer At The Pool

Pools are great for play, exercise and therapy. However, it is critical that while enjoying ourselves, we take appropriate safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 275 children nationwide under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools annually, and more than 4,100 children receive medical treatment for pool-related accidents, the majority of which occur in backyard pools. Luckily, building codes and standards can help.

Council shares the following tips: • Install fences and protective gates: To ensure the pool area is inaccessible to unauthorized swimmers and children when there is

no supervisor, install a fence at least 4-feet high around pool and spa areas with a self-closing, selflatching gate or door. Move all chairs, tables, large toys or other objects away from the perimeter that would allow a child to climb up to reach the gate latch or enable someone to climb over the fence. • Keep safety devices nearby: Always keep basic lifesaving equipment handy (pole, rope and personal flotation devices) and know how to use them. These aids should be kept on both sides of the pool and should remain stationary – not be misplaced through play activities. • Install alarms: Install alarms on all doors and windows to detect

Asian American Foundation Raises $1 Billion To Fight Anti-Asian Hate (Continued From Page 01) corporate partners, and individuals to commit even more resources through TAAF’s “AAPI Giving Challenge” — a 5 year commitment to bringing resources to AAPI organizations and causes. Today’s announcement marks a crucial turning point in philanthropic support for AAPI communities which have historically been severely underfunded, receiving less than 0.5% of charitable giving. “TAAF was founded to close critical gaps of support for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and end the longstanding underinvestment in our communities. Today’s historic announcement should send a clear signal to the 23 million AAPIs living in this country that TAAF and our AAPI Giving Challenge partners are here to upend the status quo in favor of a better, brighter future for AAPI communities,” said Sonal Shah, President of TAAF. “The AAPI Giving Challenge was created to invite other funders, leaders, and philanthropists to the table to help TAAF advance our mission, and we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we’ve received in such a short period of time. It’s amazing to know that we

are not alone in wanting to help lift up AAPI communities. In fact, there’s a long list of organizations and people who are joining us in saying enough is enough — the time for change is now.” Shah and members of TAAF’s Board attended a meeting at the White House this afternoon to discuss their groundbreaking commitment to AAPI communities, briefing Biden-Harris administration officials on their plans to deploy the committed resources across the foundation’s three priority investment areas: combating anti-AAPI hate, data and research, and education. They also discussed the importance of business, philanthropy, and nonprofits working together for change. Members of TAAF’s Advisory Council, including Daniel Dae Kim and Lisa Ling joined the meeting virtually, as did some of the foundation and corporate partners that made contributions to the fundraise, including representatives from the Anti-Defamation League, MacArthur Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, Mastercard, Bain & Company, and sweetgreen. TAAF’s representatives met with White House Public Engage-

ment Director Cedric Richmond, Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice, and Deputy Assistant to the President and AAPI Senior Liaison Erika Moritsugu. President Biden and Vice President Harris dropped by the meeting to express their support for TAAF and solidarity with the AAPI community. A full list of TAAF’s AAPI Giving Challenge partners are listed on its website, and they include leading foundations and corporations, as well as individual donors. Partners either pledged contributions to the $1 billion raised so far through the AAPI Giving Challenge, or they made in-kind commitments to support AAPI communities with TAAF’s help. Some of the money raised will go into TAAF, though the vast majority will go directly to AAPI communities. In some cases, TAAF will advise its AAPI Giving Challenge partners on how best to deploy their financial commitments. In addition, TAAF is also asking its corporate partners to prioritize AAPIs in their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agendas.

unauthorized access from the home into the pool area. You can also install a pool alarm to detect accidental or unauthorized entrance into the water. While the alarm provides an immediate warning, it is not a substitute for the barrier fences, door and window alarms or safety covers. • Remember safety covers: Install an approved safety cover on any pool. For the safety of all individuals, do not allow anyone to stand or play on it. • Be code-compliant with drain covers and grates: To help identify compliance with current standards, all pool and hot tub drains must have a cover or grate marked with the appropriate product marking, including the service life in years and an information label that is provided to the pool owner. Not having a compliant cover could result in some part of a swimmer’s body being entrapped in the in the drain – a dangerous situation that

could result in injury or drowning. If a cover is broken, missing or noncompliant, the pool should be closed immediately, and a replacement should be performed by pool professionals. • Ensure an existing pool has safe suction outlets: Pools and spas with a single drain – other than an unblockable outlet – must have a certified blockable suction outlet and one of the following: a safety vacuum release system; a suctionlimiting vent system; a gravity drainage system; or other safety features that comply with industry standards. • Secure the proper permits for a pool installation: If you’re installing a pool, it will be important to contact your local building department first to determine what permits are needed and what requirements you must follow. India’s Daily Covid Cases (1.96 Lakh) Below 2 Lakh, First Since April 14 (Continued From Page 01) Maharashtra on Monday reported 22,122 fresh coronavirus cases and 592 fatalities, taking the tally of infections to over 56.02 lakh and the death count to 89,212. After Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have the highest number of infections. Karnataka, the state worst-affected by coronavirus in the second wave, saw 25,311 new cases. Capital Bengaluru logged 5,701 infections, slightly fewer than the previous day’s figures. Tamil Nadu saw a slight dip in daily Covid cases and deaths with 34,867 fresh cases and 404 deaths. 4,985 of the new infections are from capital Chennai. Neighbouring Kerala on Monday recorded 17,821 new coronavirus cases amid a decline in testing. 196 Covid-linked deaths were reported today, the state’s highest single-day count. Delhi recorded 1,550 fresh coronavirus cases, the lowest single-day tally since March 27, and 207 deaths on Monday. Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, recorded 3,894 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. 153 Covid patients died in the same period. It is fifth in the list of worst-hit states in India. In Haryana, 3,757 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours. Coronil - the controversial ‘ayurvedic medicine’ from yoga guru Ramdev’s company Patanjali - will be part of the state government’s free Covid kit for patients. Even as many states are facing a massive challenge of vaccinating people amid shortage of domestic vaccines, US vaccine makers Pfizer and Moderna have turned down requests to supply Delhi and Punjab with their vaccines. Both cited official policy and said they would only deal with the centre.

EKAL Foundation’s Offensive Against The Pandemic In Rural India (Continued From Page 01)

from its allied organizations.

There was a reason too for this apathy towards the rural community. Last year, the villages had fared quite well in arresting the spread of corona, by and large, and the majority of folks there had remained immune to it.

Last year, Ekal’s successful initiative against covid was based on

As India entered well into Yr.2021, the situation changed. According to Bajrang Bagra, the CEO of ‘Ekal Abhiyan’ (federation of all ‘Ekal’ organizations), “the serious aspect of the pandemic, this time around, is that it has struck even in the countryside where, unfortunately, the medical infrastructure and facilities are not as strong as they are in the urban areas”. In rural India, ‘Ekal’ (as ‘Abhiyan’ is popularly known) has the most wide-spread network of volunteers and collaborators in the deepest corners of villages. It has firm presence and unwavering support in over 100,000 villages. That’s why Ekal has undertaken a comprehensive well-coordinated offensive against the pandemic, with support

self-monitoring, self-reliance, education and cooperative-exchanges. It included a wide-spread awareness campaign about the hygiene, social distancing, food distribution, mask-making and restrictive movements. The new offensive has not only incorporated all these steps in the

direct-action roadmap, but also, has started a proactive counter campaign against the misinformation about the vaccine, the danger posed by covid and voodoo-treatments. With extensive reach well beyond its footings, Ekal has mobilized tens of thousands of its school teachers for this information campaign. ‘Ekal-Arogya (Health Foundation)’ has established 24-hr Telehealth lifeline (# 011 41236457) for professional medical counselling. According to Ramesh Shah, Ekal Global Coordinator and an advisor to Ekal-USA, ‘Board of Directors’, “currently more than 350 ‘National Medico Organization (NMO)’ Doctors in India and some in U.S. are manning the helpline every day”. In addition to various empowering projects for the economic sustainance of the village folks, Ekal has earmarked one million dollars just for covid relief. It is converting its 29 ‘Gramotthan Research Ctrs’ and ‘Integrated Village Development Ctrs’ into coro-

na isolation camps, fully equipped with Oxygen concentrators, PPE kits, Oximeters and basic medicines. After making provision for hundreds of beds it is dispensing Ayurvedic, Homoeopathic and Allopathic medicines as deemed necessary. According to Arun Gupta, Chairman of Ekal-USA ‘Board of Directors’, “Ekal has lost many volunteers to Covid and so Ekal has created an endowment fund to the tune of $500,000 - $1Million, as an assistance to their families. It is supplying 15,000 Oximeters and infrared thermometers to its ‘Arogya Sevikas’ (healthcare workers). It has created resident facilities for thousands of its city volunteers, throughout its reach. Ekal intends to extend emergency medical services to 5 million people. It is running vaccination Centers in collaboration with the local govt. These efforts are being spear-headed by Dr. Mukul Bhatia in India and Dr. Rakesh Gupta in U.S., with support from numerous healthcare specialists. In this national crisis, Ekal is work-

ing alongside various organization like ‘Sewa International’, ‘AAPI’, ‘Seva Bharati’, ‘Mission Oxygen’ and few others. It is assisting many humanitarian groups who have collected funds for Indian pandemic but have no proper distribution network to dispense them. Ekal is appealing nationally and internationally to its donor-base to contribute to its various relief-work packages. As of now four donor-packages have been floated – Diagnostic Kits $50/village; Telehealth Lifeline $500/30 villages; Supporting Covid Ctr $5000/Ctr; and Supporting Covid Victim $5,000/Family. Ekal’s youth groups are also very active in creating awareness and raising funds for this unprecedented fight against the pandemic. One example - Arnav Enaganti from Michigan has taken an initiative to raise funds for Oximeter, PPE Kits and Oxygen concentrators. Come what may, Ekal is confident that with everyone’s help, we can defeat this deadly virus, once and for all. Please support this noble cause and donate generously at www. ekal.org

“Even without a global pandemic, troops face separation, isolation and unique hardships and risks associated with their military service.

While military medical teams are stepping in to help care for COVID-19 patients, the USO provides supplies and amenities like toiletry kits, comfort foods and gym equipment as a tangible way of supporting the U.S. Armed Forces.

As a result of the pandemic, many of these challenges have only intensified,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president for Operations, Programs and Entertainment for the United Service Organizations (USO). Over the past year, the USO, a nonprofit charitable corporation chartered by Congress, met the rapidly changing needs of service members by developing and deploying alternative support to frontline troops around the world. Thousands of virtual and distance programming events have reached over 2.5 million participants so far. Here are a few ways these efforts are making the lives of military members and their families easier during the COVID-19 crisis: • Traditional center programming has gone virtual, with trivia nights,

The USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) series offers a wide variety of positive, uplifting programming, music, and gaming initiatives. These programs serve not only as a reprieve from the stress of daily life but are also a chance to connect with celebrity guests and other members of the global military community.

To help keep them entertained and connected to their families, home and country, the USO provides Care Packages and USO2GO electronic kits that include TVs, gaming systems, and more to over one million service members and families as they have been in quarantine. • Mobile USO units deployed across the country to COVID-19 hotspots work closely with the

Boosting The Morale Of US Military Service Members With A T-Shirt Looking to show your appreciation for U.S. service men and women? One tangible way to support members of the military, as well as display your appreciation for their sacrifices, is through the USO Tshirt campaign, that runs throughout the month of May. The USO -- The Force Behind the Forces -- is a nonprofit organization that strengthens the military by connecting service members to family, home, and country. Given the unprecedented challenges brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of the USO is more valued by the military than ever before. In addition to raising funds for the USO’s important mission, this annual campaign also helps to bridge the military-civilian divide. Each year, thousands of service members stationed around the world vote on a design for the USO T-shirt campaign, which is known

as the “official uniform of the military supporter.” Now in its 11th year, the campaign is a meaningful way for Americans to do more than say simply say “thank you,” by donating and actually being part of the effort to support the m i l i t a r y, and according to those who

serve, it can also boost morale. “Seeing someone wear the USO T-shirt lets me know that they care about me, my family, and the military,” says USO’s Christopher Plamp, senior vice president for Operations, Programs and Entertainment. “It’s a simple gesture that means so much. I encourage Americans to get a shirt and demonstrate their support for the military. It’s a great way to show thanks to our Armed Forces.” To learn more, as well as to donate and receive a shirt to show your

support, visit www.uso.org/uniform. Donations to the USO go toward mobile and center operations, programs and entertainment, transition services, and more. “Anyone can take meaningful action to change the lives of military service members for the better,” says Plamp. “One concrete way to do so is by actively expressing your gratitude and support for members of the military and their families, at home and abroad during this campaign.” (StatePoint)

Black Hole Monument

The Black Hole Monument is a controversial part of the Indian History; an atrocity that befell its victims.

there, owing to heat stroke and extreme suffocation. Immense luck was bestowed upon the remaining

To know about the actual history of the Black Hole Monument in Kolkata, we are to travel back to the past, during the British rule in India. The British rein in India was memorable and a plethora of chest thumping as well as awful events and incidents took place during this historic dispensation in the city. One British survivor, John Holwell, elicits and helps to unravel the mystery behind the construction of the monument known as the black hole. This has been the only source of information that witnessed the actual incident and was a living witness. He states that owing to the siege of Calcutta siraj – ud – daulah, 146 people were captivated as prisoners and were confined in a room that measured about 14 feet by 8 feet. The temperature of the place, the ventilation of the area was intolerable and hence, 123 people perished and lost their lives over

23 who were fortunately able to survive in this condition that was in

a Pell mell. The Black Hole Monument is counted among other architectural extravagances of the nation especially of the British Empire.

Later, John Holwell became the Governor of Bengal and the Black Hole Monument earned fame and repute in the city of passion , palaces and joy . Criticisms and controversies were there as the filth in the air as some did not agree upon whatever john holwell did opine. it is surprising or rather shocking to know that it is believed that somehow the British’s were able to escape through a few secret tunnels attached to river ports and save their lives there after .the ritishes who survived were then sent to Madras with the help of ships awaiting on the port of the

river Hooghly .

It was completely ironical for the British themselves to state the number of prisoners who lost their lives but being the direct and living witness of this kerfuffle and this bedlam condition their accounts had to be taken into serious consideration by the rest of the population and the historians. In fact, John Howell was the person who endeavoured to build a monument upon that specific place. Further research had off course been done upon the matter. A plethora of archaeological research works had been conducted after putting down John Holwell’s words. This is all about putting together the pieces of puzzle in a juxta position to reframe the history of the Black Hole Monument. The history of the Black Hole Monument in Kolkata is rare and is uniquely interesting as well. the further research work acts as the ‘icing on the cake ‘ where as the arguments upon John Holwell’s opinion and the criticisms act as ‘ cherry on top ‘ . Though the spe-

cific incident had been a tragic one and massive life loss occurred in the city, this has been recorded as one of the most historic events of utmost significance in the pages of history. It is sometimes said the monument disappeared around 1822 to e rebuilt by Lord Curzon. Under the firmament of pandemonium in the country this was a real topsy turvy of the contemporary condition. The monument is said to e rebuilt y lord Curzon in the year 1901 in the south west corner of the writers building .this complete building, shifting, relocating and rebuilding was going on during the height of the Indian freedom and independence movement in 1940. This was never stable during the British rule and was again relocated y the then dispensation into the st John’s church compound. The dungeon and the prisoners of war with their sufferings did create a whole new portion of history and added to the heritage and cloture of India. This makes a special place in the pages of the history books and in the warmest nooks of our hearts.

Akbar And Birbal Stories Shorten The Road Akbar was on a long road journey to a neighboring kingdom on a hot day. The heat vexed him. He complained about the long road to Birbal. Birbal commented that he could shorten the road. “Really? Please do that if possible,” said the intrigued Akbar. “Sure, your majesty. But before that you have to solve five riddles,” came Birbal’s

reply. Akbar agreed. Birbal started asking the riddles one after the other. Akbar would take time to solve the tricky riddles. Right when Akbar solved the fifth riddle, he said, “Too bad you could not shorten the road and I managed to solve all your five riddles,” he said triumphantly. Birbal smiled. “But I have shortened the road huzoor. We are at the destination.” Akbar noticed that they had reached their destination.

Parents And Caregivers Remain Optimistic, Despite Barriers A new survey from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows that most parents and caregivers in the United States are optimistic about their children’s futures, but see clear barriers to helping them grow up to be independent, financially stable, and healthy.

The survey, “Raising the Next Generation: Research with Parents and Caregivers,” explores themes of parents’ optimism for the future, their feelings about parenting, their feelings about their communities and experiences with racism and discrimination, as well as how these factors support or hinder their child’s ability to thrive. We all have our heroes – whether it be a sportsman, a teacher, an actor who demolishes a whole army of bad people single handedly in movies or even a mentor or someone whom we look up. We never think of our father as a hero simply because he is not hero material. But have we ever given a thought to what is hero material? He need not be unique or work in a specialized field but one who consistently does the same tasks day in and day out even when it is boring or not interesting so that his family can live comfortably in my eyes becomes a hero.

A person who helps his children to achieve their dreams at the cost of his dreams in my eyes is the actual hero. A man who saves hundred ways in order to book seats for a game or show which his children has expressed a desire to see is the greatest hero that one can find in real life. A man who fights at the school in order that his child is treated fairly and equitably without discrimination is the hero. So, on the Father’s Day let us salute our true heroes – all the Father’s.

Sitara: Let Girls Dream Raises Voice Against Child Marriages

By Sumaiya Malik The day after I watched “Sitara:

While the film is set in the sub-continent, child marriages, shockingly so, exist in the U.S. Unchained at

Emancipation from parental control involves (absolving a parent’s responsibilities to a minor) involves convincing a judge that a minor is sufficiently mature and independent to make legal binding decisions such as marriage. A 2018 Dallas Morning News article said that too often it’s actually parents set on marrying off their offspring who manipulate their child – and the legal system – into

Let Girls Dream,” a 2020 short film directed and written by Academy Awards winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, I was still thinking about it. The film, available on Netflix, belongs to the new genre of short films gaining popularity in a world where attention span is short, and a lot must be said forcefully and quickly especially when it’s an important message that will affects society. Sitara, a computer-animated 15-minute film attempts to spotlight the issue of child marriage, a marriage in which at least one party is under 18 years of age. Set in the old city of Lahore, the film revolves around Pari, a fourteenyear-old girl who aspires to be a pilot. She has an older brother, maybe by a year or two, and a much younger sister in a house where the parents are far apart in age. A framed picture shows an old man, Pari’s dad, with a child-bride, her mother. The film is beautifully made, with colors and background details that all speak up in their silence about child marriages of which one is destined for Pari. The way the film pans out is anyone’s guess, but what’s important and different in this film is that no character in a society function alone. Each one supports the other and vice versa.

last, a US-based non-profit listed that 300,000 children– under age 18 – were legally married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018. In Texas, in the same time span, an estimate showed more than 41,000 child marriages. 96% of the children married were age 16 or 17, typically not old enough to file for divorce or enter a domestic violence shelter, and most were girls, the website said.

The fact remains that a character in society is not alone and each character influencing a child marriage can play a positive or negative role in stopping what is considered child abuse.

Anupam Kher is all set to celebrate his debut in movies tomorrow, as May 25 marks 37 years of his first Bollywood outing ‘Saaransh’.

#1DayToGo for my 37th birthday in movies! More tomorrow! 1DayToGo #Saaransh #Introducing,” wrote the actor.

Feeling emotional ahead of the big day tomorrow, the actor shared a video from the starting credits of his debut movie that highlighted his name – Introducing Anupam Kher.

Recently, Anupam Kher had announced his decision to quit his popular American TV show to be with his family.

To find help or volunteer visit Asian Family Support Services of Austin, afssaustin.org.

Speaking about the same, he had

told BT in an interview, “Acting is a part of my life, it’s not my life. And at all times, we have to be ready to lose something to gain something. Quitting the American show was a difficult decision — career-wise, financially and otherwise. But my family and my wife Kirron needed me more. It’s not like I won’t get work here.” The veteran actor will soon be seen in ‘Kashmir Files’ and has also signed up filmmaker like Rohit Dhawan and Sooraj Barjatya for their next ventures. (Courtesy: https://timesofindia. indiatimes. com/)

Sitara reminds us of that. The film breaks hearts only to make them eventually beat with hope. Sitara shares Pari’s dreams and sorrow when faced with a forced marriage with an old man. The film acts as a mirror to those who have the power to stop the cycle of child marriages.

The same article added that Texas recently passed a bill in 2017 to end most child marriage, but allows emancipated minors to marry.

Divorces are expensive, and if the marriage is abusive, getting help from a shelter or law enforcement becomes complicated by age.

Chinoy’s Sitara becomes a mirror image for all those parents and siblings who can take the bold step of breaking this unhealthy process especially in the United States where education and awareness are already a part of every home.

Anupam Kher Is Choked With Emotions As He Completes 37 Years In Bollywood!

The problem of child marriages is closer than we think. Often, we don’t even realize it.

Marriage before age 18 has such devastating, long-lasting consequences – undermining girls’ health, education and economic opportunities and increasing their risk of experiencing violence – that the U.S. state department considers marriage before 18 a “human rights abuse,” a 2017 New York Times article said.

approving the designation.

“Even today when I see my name in the opening titles of my first film #Saaransh as introducing #AnupamKher I get choked with emotions. Can’t believe that tomorrow, 25th I will complete 37 years in cinema. Wah! God has really been kind!!
