U.S. To Rush Vaccine Raw Materials, Anti-Covid Supplies To India By Arul Louis (Courtesty:IANS) Apr 26, 2021 NEW YORK – In a break from the America First policy, President Joe Biden’s administration is “working round the clock” to immediately send India raw material needed for making Covishield and other products needed in the fight against the COVID-19 surge overtaking the nation, according to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

The U.S. will also send India anti-COVID supplies like test kits, ventilators, medications, and personal protective equipment used by frontline workers.

Recalling the assistance sent by India to the U.S. in the early phase of the pandemic last year, he told India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in a phone call April 25 that “the United States is working around the clock to deploy available resources and supplies,” Sul-

Why It’s Never Too Early To Make A Long-Term Care Plan Americans are living longer than ever before, and with continually rising health care costs, the need for a long-term care solution becomes more of a “when” than an “if” situation, according to financial experts, who warn that Americans are largely waiting too long to plan and prepare.

more than half of Americans turning 65 are projected to need some type of long-term care in the future. This disparity could be due to the fact that many underestimate longterm care costs and expect to rely on savings or Medicare and Med-

too much, inflation or the economy. Indeed, a majority of consumers in a recent survey conducted by Versta Research on behalf of Lincoln Financial guess that a private room in a nursing home costs less than half the realistic estimate.

Being realistic about the possibility your future could involve longterm care and the true costs associated with it can help you plan accordingly and motivate you to get started early. • Get on the same page as your family:

“Many people wait until they’re in their 50s or 60s before beginning long-term care planning, but with costs rising, it’s important to start planning when you’re younger and healthy,” says Heather Deichler, senior vice president, MoneyGuard product management, Lincoln Financial.

Having a long-term care conversation with loved ones can help you feel confident about your future and help avoid conflict among family members. Share your expectations for daily living, such as how and where you want to receive care.

To get prepped, consider these tips from Lincoln Financial: • Plan early: Only about 7.5 million people in the U.S. have policies that pay long-term care benefits, according to the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, but

icaid to cover them. Those in the know -- financial planners -- see medical/healthcare costs and longterm care expenses as bigger risks to retirees’ savings than spending

Others may simply feel their good health exempts them from the need to plan at all. But living a healthy lifestyle could mean you’ll live longer and face health-related risks

you get a handle on your financial future and make you aware of all your options, including those that evolve with your needs. They may point you to solutions that can help cover qualified longterm care expenses. Some solutions can offer more options and flexibility with a guaranteed level of protection and the possibility for investment growth. For example, in addition to obtaining care in an assisted living facility or nursing home, you could have the flexibility to receive care at home, including from family members.

• Consult a financial professional:

Comprehensive long-term care planning with family members and a financial professional now can help ensure everyone is prepared for the emotional and financial decisions that may need to be made in the years ahead.

Tips To Pay For College This Fall What does paying for college during life’s “new normal” and current economic climate look like? A new survey highlights parent plans and concerns regarding the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.

sources. • Maximize financial aid. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year your child attends college. This important form is the gateway to scholarships, grants, workstudy and federal student loans. If your financial situation has substantially changed since last year, reach out to your school’s financial aid office for help and resources.

The College Ave Student Loans survey of parents of undergraduate students conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights found that of those planning to help their child pay for college, 52% said the pandemic will make it more difficult to pay this fall and 45% said it’s changed how they plan to pay, with 51% using more savings, 45% borrowing more in student loans, and 27% taking out a parent loan. Despite new challenges, the commitment to higher education remains steadfast: 93% of families agree obtaining a college degree is more important than ever. “The pandemic has presented new obstacles, yet as this survey highlights, families are incredibly resilient and determined to help their child obtain a higher education,” says Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer of College Ave Student Loans. If higher education costs are on the horizon for you, the survey results suggest keeping these tips

in mind: • Anticipate spending more. Parents across the board reported college expenses being more than they expected, including college tuition and fees (81%), room and board/rent and food (77%), school activities and fees (61%) and books and supplies (57%). Plan and budget accordingly. • Plan to use multiple sources. While 78% of parents put money aside for their child’s education, only 17% said savings could cover the full cost. Be prepared to look at a variety of funding

• Search for scholarships. Grants and scholarships were the top method used to pay for college, ahead of parent savings and income. One easy one to consider is the $1,000 monthly scholarship sweepstakes from College Ave. • Tune up your credit. Of those surveyed, 53% plan to use student loans and 26% plan to use parent loans. Get a copy of your credit report and review your credit score, particularly if you think you may need private student loans in addition to federal. Reach out to the credit reporting agency

to address any errors. Credit history and credit score will impact whether you’re approved for a private student loan, as well as the interest rate. • Encourage your child to contribute. Sixty-nine percent of parents expect their child to help chip in and 52% expect their child to find a job while in college. • Balance other financial commitments. When it comes to balancing other commitments, you can take comfort that you’re not alone. Fifty-eight percent of parents are stressed about balancing their retirement and paying for college. Look at your balance of retirement savings, obligations, and goals to give you a clearer picture on where you stand and what you can afford to contribute towards college. A majority of families surveyed wish more planning resources existed. If that describes you, check out the savings strategies and insights from college and personal finance experts available at collegeave.com. While funding the 2021-2022 school year may be more difficult than you previously anticipated, having a solid plan and knowing all your options can help ensure a college education remains within reach. 3 Ways Housing Counselors Can Help During A Pandemic While the tireless work of medical professionals, teachers and grocery store workers has rightfully been celebrated throughout the pandemic, you may be less familiar with the work of housing counselors. During a challenging year that exacerbated the U.S. housing crisis, those close to the situation say that housing counselors are the pandemic’s unsung heroes.

loan terms is a good fit based on individual circumstances, often at little or no cost. During the coronavirus emergency, they’ve also

repayment, debt management, and improve their long-term financial health.

“Having a safe and affordable place to call home helps lay the foundation for wellness, dignity, and economic opportunity, and throughout the pandemic, housing counselors have continued to help their clients avoid eviction and remain in their homes,” says Eileen Fitzgerald, head of housing affordability philanthropy with Wells Fargo. Most counseling agencies are approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), making their advice objective. According to Fitzgerald, here are three ways housing counselors can help during a pandemic: 1. Offer homeownership advice: Navigating the process of home buying and homeownership is extremely challenging. Housing counselors provide independent advice on buying a home, refinancing, defaults, foreclosures and credit issues, as well as advice about whether a particular set of mortgage

helped homeowners understand their current options for relief and protection. 2. Provide help for renters: Housing security can be tenuous for renters in the best of times. During a global pandemic that caused widespread income loss, unemployment and illness, many found themselves unable to make rent on time. Housing counselors helped individuals leverage protections for renters, as well as provided trusted guidance, including enrolling renters in need of assistance in plans to address sustainable rent

ties.

3. Close the housing gap: The work of housing counselors addresses systemic inequalities related to housing in an effort to close the housing security gap, particularly critical during the pandemic, which has disproportionally impacted Black, Latino and Indigenous communi-

New Support Recognizing the need to keep Americans housed during the pandemic and beyond, the Wells Fargo Foundation has provided $225 million to nonprofits that help individuals, families, entrepreneurs and communities, with a focus on assisting racially and ethnically diverse people disproportionally affected by the pandemic. As part of this effort, the foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $80 million for housing-specific initia-

tives, including: • Grants to nonprofits that offer eviction and foreclosure prevention assistance, rental assistance and financial counseling. • Donations to organizations providing free or low-cost legal assistance and representation for renters, particularly vulnerable people disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. • Grants for Community Development Financial Institutions serving rural, persistently poor communities. • Housing stability grants for national nonprofit housing intermediaries and local community-based housing nonprofits. “Through our support of housing counselors, we hope to inspire meaningful change to a long history of systemic inequality, injustice, loss of wealth and housing instability experienced by people of color, particularly during times of economic distress,” says Fitzgerald. “Many of those in school communities have faced adversity and trauma, ranging from upended routines to home isolation and loss of family members. Simply restarting school won’t erase the aftereffects,” says Susan Driscoll, president of CPI. In many cases, the past year has simply exacerbated issues that predate COVID-19. It’s estimated that prior to the pandemic, nearly half of all students in the U.S. had experienced some form of trauma, according to the nonprofit research organization, WestEd. Driscoll says that while the federal government’s COVID CARES Act will provide essential financial support at the district level, at the individual level, families and teachers are in a position to help make the transition as smooth and successful as possible. “Ideally, all individuals in a student’s life will be aligned in helping them prepare for their return to school,” she says. Having trained more than 15 million individuals over four decades in its techniques, CPI is lending its unique knowledge during this transitional period. Here are some of the organization’s top tips for teachers and parents who are busy making preparations for the return to inperson learning:

• Create a good learning environment: Classrooms should be well-organized and structured, but also welcoming to reestablish a familiar routine. • Listen empathetically: Offer your undivided attention, then provide thoughtful, nonjudgmental feedback. • Rebuild trust: In a recent survey by the American Federation of Teachers and the New York Life Foundation, only 15% of educators said they feel very comfortable addressing students’ emotional needs caused or intensified by the coronavirus outbreak. While teachers may feel a bit unprepared in this area, making it clear to students that sharing their feelings and concerns is appreciated and encouraged will go a long way. • Acknowledge your own anxiety: Take the time to understand the reasons you are feeling anxious and seek a positive outlet. Additionally, CPI has created educator-specific supplemental content to its Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training. That training, which is approved for stimulus related federal funding via the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund, will focus specifically on recognizing the stages of an escalating crisis, as well as learning evidence-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate. During its 40-year history, CPI has trained more than 55,000 educators worldwide in nonviolent crisis techniques that assist with de-escalating and managing heightened school situations. To learn more, visit crisisprevention.com/ About-Us. Opening the doors is only step one in returning students to the classroom. As the pandemic eases, parents and teachers will also need to actively address a year’s worth of isolation and anxiety. (StatePoint)

Delicious And Delightful Carrot Cake Twists For Easter Carrot cake has been an Easter staple for years, so why not serve some fun takes on this popular dessert for your celebration? With Easter landing on International Carrot Day, April 4, John Kanell, culinary expert and founder of Preppy Kitchen, partnered with McCormick spices to create exclusive Easter dessert recipes that put a delightful twist on the classic carrot cake. “Growing up, desserts were always the highlight of Easter, with my mother and grandmother making wonderful carrot cakes from scratch,” says John Kanell. Because carrot cake brings back great memories, Kanell wanted to channel that nostalgia, while adding whimsical touches. His resulting creations are fun, familyfriendly and beyond-delicious. As darling as they are tasty, Carrot Cake Cookies bring all the flavors

of carrot cake in a fun, handheld way that allows the whole family to get involved in the kitchen. Big and little kids alike can help frost and decorate!

Make room at the dessert table for Carrot Cake Roll with Lemon Cream Cheese Filling – a fluffy spiced cake loaded with carrots and the warm flavor of McCormick spices. Rolled up with a light and airy lemon and cream cheese filling, it’s a sweet way to celebrate the season.

• Feature carrots front-and-center in desserts. Beyond their beautiful orange color, they add moisture to baked goods.

“As a nod to my Greek heritage, my family always incorporated lemon into our dessert recipes. Adding it to the cream cheese filling provides a bright complement to my slightly sweet and tender Carrot Cake Roll recipe,” says Kanell.

• Don’t over-mix your batter. It will activate the gluten in the flour and cause your baked goods to go from tender and airy to tough and overly chewy. Mix your dry and wet ingredients until just combined.

Kanell is also sharing his top baking tips for success.

• Too much flour makes for dense, gummy baked goods. Always measure your flour correctly by using a scale or fluffing the flour and sprinkling it into your measuring cup before leveling off.

and not cling to the side of your mixing bowl. • Stock your spice rack with McCormick pure vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and nutmeg so it is ready for all your baking needs. Spring is all about nature waking up after a long slumber and these essential spices brighten and add warmth to seasonal dishes. • Even if your little ones are too young to make a recipe, they can still help measure, mix and combine ingredients, and of course decorate cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

• Use room temperature butter and cream cheese – left out of the refrigerator for about 30 to 60 minutes.

Retiring Single: 5 Strategies To Consider (Continued From Page 01) And for women, it’s more likely to be the case. According to the Administration on Aging, 54% of older women are unmarried, as compared to 30% of older men.

savings and more robust disability and long-term care insurance protection than couples. You could also choose to take a part-time job for extra income.

“Retirement planning can be especially challenging for singles, who need to prepare without the decision-making and income support of a partner,” says Scott Pedvis, financial advisor, Wells Fargo Advisors. For those setting a course for solo retirement, Wells Fargo Advisors offers these five tips: 1. Create a fallback plan. Retirees commonly discover a gap between what they thought they’d need for retirement and what’s actually needed. And if you’re single, you may not have a second income stream to rely on should finances become unexpectedly disrupted. Periodically review your investment portfolio and build backup plans. Such contingency planning could involve more emergency

2. Build a network of advisors. With autonomy sometimes comes a reluctance to seek advice. Consider forming a team of trusted professionals, including a financial advisor, accountant, attorney and healthcare providers. 3. Count on loved ones—to a point. Friends and family can be a lifeline in good times and times

of need. However, ensuring they don’t take advantage of your independent status or create serious financial burdens for you is essential. For example, you should take extreme care before turning over financial matters to others. Stay actively involved and work with a trusted team to help make decisions in your best interests. Evaluate the possibility of engaging a corporate trustee to manage finances, should you become incapacitated. 4. Prepare key documents. According to Caring.com, more than half of American adults don’t have estate planning documents such as a will or trust. Don’t wait. Even if you’ve put some documents together, they may not ensure your

wishes are carried out. Here are the key documents forming the foundation for most estate plans: • Will • Power of attorney (POA) for financial matters • Durable power of attorney for health care • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) release authorization • Living will • Revocable living trust To prevent confusion and misdirected bequests, carefully designate beneficiaries of IRAs, employer-sponsored retirement plans, insurance policies and annuities. Lay out clear directions for the distribution of remaining assets. Also, don’t forget about digital assets and accounts. Will your executor or trustee have proper authority to access and manage those items? Talk to your attorney about keeping digital planning secure and upto-date.

5. Plan for change. Entering into a committed relationship could mean making adjustments. Look at your insurance coverage, emergency fund and future income plan. Think about having a frank discussion with your new partner about how you’ll divide assets in the event of divorce or death. If ex-spouses or children are in the picture, consider managing finances and estate plans separately. With the assistance of your financial advisor and estate-planning attorney, you can establish a basic estate plan, and, as appropriate, discuss other strategies for preserving wealth. For more expert retirement guidance, visit wellsfargoadvisors.com. “Planning for retirement is part of the financial journey. Key planning strategies can help you feel confident as you approach your golden years solo,” says Pedvis. (StatePoint)

Celebrate 401(k) Day

April Fool’s Day is just around the corner. Even in today’s socially-distanced environment, people are sure to attempt a few pranks to mark the day. As in normal years, the majority will be silly, some will be hilarious, while others will fall flat. This year, try something different and celebrate 4/01(k) Day instead. To mark the occasion, Lincoln Financial Group is encouraging savers to test their knowledge on three common misconceptions about saving for retirement revealed in a recent survey of U.S. employees by Lincoln Financial and CivicScience: • True or False: “Saving enough to meet the employer match is enough to keep me on track for a comfortable retirement.” This

sider all options of your 401(k) platform prior to making a decision, the process for a rollover is typically very easy and brings multiple benefits. Instead of tracking investment selections, performance or statements for multiple accounts, for example, you’ll only have to monitor a single account. “While there are certainly still some misconceptions when it comes to saving for the future, the majority of those surveyed understand the importance of not delaying saving for later in their careers,” said Aaron Moore, senior vice president, Retirement Plan Client Engagement, Lincoln Financial Group. “This is cause for celebration, as delaying saving for retirement can have a significant impact on future savings. This is another reason why we are focused on working with employers to educate their employees so they can achieve the retirement they envision.” Tips to keep your celebration going If you’re looking for more ways to celebrate 4/01(k) Day – and help set yourself up for a financially secure future – here are three tips to keep in mind:

one is (most likely) false! An employer match (if offered) is a good place to start, but if you really want to make sure you have enough of a nest egg to retire when and how you want, a good rule of thumb is to save at least 10 to 15 percent of your salary. • True or False: “Paying down my student loan debt as quickly as possible is more important than saving for my retirement.” This can be true…or false, depending on your situation. While you should not delay saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to determine how to strategize paying off debt while also planning for your future. You can also use free tools like the debt calculator found at LincolnFinancial.com to help you make a plan for paying off debt. • True or False: “I’ve thought about moving money from an old employer’s 401(k) into my current employer’s 401(k), but it seems like it would be too much of a hassle.” This one is false! While it is important to con-

1. Check your account. It might sound simple, but logging in regularly (try for at least once a quarter) can help ensure you’re on track with your savings goal. Be sure to use the calculators and projection tools your retirement plan offers. 2. Update (or create) a goal. When you have a goal to work towards, research shows you’ll be more likely to increase your contributions, and therefore, increase your savings. 3. Meet with a professional. If your employer offers retirement consultants, schedule a meeting, or consider speaking with a financial professional, who can help you understand the full picture of your savings and where to focus your efforts. For more resources, tools and calculators, visit LincolnFinancial.com/retirement. A comfortable financial future is something to celebrate. So this April 1, take stock of your retirement savings, starting with your 401(k). (StatePoint)

U.S. To Rush Vaccine Raw Materials, Anti-Covid Supplies To India (Continued From Page 01) But as recently as April 23, various U.S. government spokespersons would not say if the Biden administration would lift the embargo. State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said April 22 that the “first obligation” was to the American people and added, “It’s in the interests of the rest of the world to see Americans vaccinated.” But as calls grew for helping India, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken gave a hint April 24 that India may get the material to fight the pandemic surge. He tweeted, “We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government, and we will rapidly deploy additional support to the people of India and India’s health care heroes.” Horne said in the readout, “Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic, the United States is determined to help India in its time of need.”After some physicians had said that hydroxychloroquine could be a treatment for COVID-19, last April Trump had personally asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lift his ban on its exports and supply the drug to the U.S. India sent about 50 million doses of HCQ to the U.S. and thanking Modi, Trump said, “We will remember it.” Now the next president’s administration is remembering it, even though the emergency use authorization for HCQ’s in hospital settings in the U.S. was withdrawn and a huge cache of it sits unused while Modi’s decision was criticized in India. India has been sharing its vaccine production with countries around the world, sending nearly 65 million doses to 86 countries. Horne said, “Sullivan affirmed America’s solidarity with India, the two countries with the great-

est number of COVID-19 cases in the world” and they both “resolved that India and the United States will continue to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic together.” The readout listing what India will receive, said, “The United States has identified sources of specific raw material urgently required for Indian manufacture of the Covishield vaccine that will immediately be made available for India. To help treat COVID-19 patients and protect front-line health workers in India, the United States has identified supplies of therapeutics, rapid diagnostic test kits, ventilators, and personal protective equipment (PPE) that will immediately be made available for India.” The U.S. is also deploying an expert team of public health advisors from the Center for Disease Control and USAID to work with the embassy in Delhi, India’s Health Ministry, and India’s Epidemic Intelligence Service, the readout said. USAID, which is the international assistance arm of the U.S., “will also quickly work with CDC to support and fast-track the mobilization of emergency resources available to India through the Global Fund,” it said. The Global Fund is an international collaboration to fight epidemics and serious diseases. Looking ahead the readout said, “The U.S. Development Finance Corporation is funding a substantial expansion of manufacturing capability for BioE (Biological E), the vaccine manufacturer in India, enabling BioE to ramp up to produce at least one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2022.” Biological E, a Hyderabad-based company, is set to conduct phase 3 trials for a vaccine developed by Baylor University and Dynavax Technologies Corporation in the U.S. At the March summit of Quad, Biden and Modi, along with Prime Ministers Yoshihide Suga of Japan and Scott Morrison of Australia,

agreed on a joint plan to help other countries with vaccines that would be made in India with U.S. and Japanese finance and distributed using Australian logistics. Indian American Democratic members of the House of Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Ro Khanna asked Biden to open the spigot on the excess vaccines for India, but from the readout of the Sullivan-Doval meeting it did not appear that, as yet there was an agreement on the vaccines. Krishnamoorthi pointed out that the U.S. had about 40 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is distributed in India under the Covishield brand name and had begun supplying some of it to Canada and the U.S. He said that he would “strongly call on the Biden Administration to release millions of AstraZeneca vaccine doses to countries hardesthit by the spread of COVID-19, including India, Argentina, and potentially others.” “I applaud the Biden Administration’s decision to put people over profits,” Khanna said welcoming the decision to give India the raw materials and other supplies, and added, “The Biden Administration can still do more, like give India our stockpile of AstraZeneca vaccines that won’t be used in the U.S.” Biden’s chief adviser on the COVID-19 pandemic, Anthony Fauci, said on a TV program April 25 that sending vaccines to India was under consideration. ANI adds: U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J Austin III April 25 directed Pentagon to use its resources in order to provide material support to frontline Indian healthcare workers who are fighting against the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m deeply concerned about the COVID-19 outbreak in India, and today, I directed the @DeptofDefense to use every resources at our disposal, within our authority, to support US interagency efforts to

provide India’s frontline healthcare workers with the materials they need,” tweeted Austin. In a statement, Austin said that men and women of the Department of Defense stand by their Indian partners in the hour of need, and they are in this fight together. “In the next few days, we will provide transportation and logistics assistance to deliver needed supplies to India, including oxygen-related equipment, rapid testing kits, and personal protective equipment,” read the statement. “We are currently assessing the equipment we can both procure and draw from our own inventory in the coming days and weeks. We will continue to work closely with other U.S. agencies and departments, as well as with industry, to support our Indian partners in their effort to combat this outbreak,” added Austin. Over three hundred oxygen concentrators were dispatched April 25 morning from New York to India, according to a Government of India official based in the U.S. Air India’s A102 transported five tons (5,000kg) of oxygen concentrators as cargo from the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York and was scheduled to land in Delhi by April 26 afternoon. “Apart from this consignment that’s has been shipped by Philips Atlanta, additional flights carrying oxygen concentrators will take off from San Francisco and Newark to transport hundreds of concentrators. The next flight from the U.S. to India is scheduled to depart from Newark Airport and will land in Delhi on April 27,” the Indian Government official told ANI. The official also noted that the Indian Mission in the United States and Air India are getting requests and inquiries from donors based in the United States to transport not just concentrators but also other medical supplies, including oxym-

eters. Meanwhile, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced April 25 that “vital medical equipment, including hundreds of oxygen concentrators and ventilators, is now on its way from the U.K. to India to support efforts to prevent the tragic loss of life from this terrible virus.” The shipment is expected to reach India by April 27. Johnson recently cancelled his India visit due to a surge in the cases of coronavirus. German Chancellor Angela Merkel also lent her support to India amid the health crisis. Merkel said April 25 that her government was preparing emergency aid for India. “To the people of India, I want to express my sympathy on the terrible suffering that COVID-19 has again brought over your communities,” Merkel said in a message shared on Twitter by her spokesman Steffen Seibert. The European Union has also stepped in to support India. The European Commission has activated its EU Civil Protection Mechanism and is seeking to send oxygen and medicine to India after receiving a request from Delhi. “Alarmed by the epidemiological situation in India. We are ready to support,” Commission president Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter April 25. “The EU executive is already coordinating with EU countries that are ready to provide urgently needed oxygen and medicine rapidly,” European Commission for humanitarian aid Janez Lenarcic wrote on Twitter. Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison expressed his solidarity with India.

Extend The Life Of Your Used Car With These Tips In the market for a car? If you’re planning on purchasing a used vehicle, you’re in good company. Nearly 70 percent of all car sales are used vehicles, likely due to the the rising costs of new cars and the increasing quality of their used counterparts. While previously owned vehicles make the best financial sense in a lot of cases, experts encourage motorists to keep a few things in mind. “For the safety of everyone sharing the road with you and to protect your purchase, it’s important to stay up-to-date on car maintenance,” says Doug Turner, director of service operations at Byrider, the nation’s largest used car and finance network of dealerships. April is National Car Care Month

Remember, warning lights on your dashboard are illuminated for a reason. Understand what they mean and address them as-needed. • Keep the interior and exterior of

your vehicle clean to prevent rust and other issues. • Use only trusted repair services that hire Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified technicians. This certification can make a big difference when it comes to quality repairs and maintenance. • Complete as-needed or at a minimum, an annual inspection, on the vehicle. Keep in mind that different seasons of the year require different inspections and repairs. • Use quality parts. • When buying a vehicle, stick to retail dealers that put cars through a detailed inspection process to help ensure a given vehicle’s safe-

ty and reliability. At the same time, consider dealers with an attached service department to help streamline maintenance and repairs. “Your relationship with the dealership shouldn’t end once you drive the car off the lot,” adds Turner. In the case of Byrider, every car sold comes with a warranty or optional vehicle service agreement, as well as discounted parts, labor and service. To learn more, visit byrider. com. Healing Veterans And Helping The Environment Go Hand-In-Hand

What does helping the environment have to do with veterans suffering from psychological trauma brought about by their combat experience? A lot, actually. That is because one organization, Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), is busy delivering thousands of artsand-crafts therapy kits to veterans each month, and most kits are made largely from recycled materials. The kits provide an important therapeutic benefit for veterans and active-duty military recovering from wounds, injuries and the long-term psychological effects of warfare, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Heal Vets kits include leatherwork, models, woodwork, jewelry, painting, needlecrafts, poster art, scrapbooks and more, and are created from materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Heal Vets has been doing this work for 50 years, and commitment to environmental sustainability has become an important and growing part of its mission. “Over the last five years, we have recycled almost one million pounds of materials,” says Joe McClain, retired Navy captain and

CEO of Heal Vets. “By upcycling, we responsibly utilize numerous materials, mostly textiles, one of the biggest contributors to landfill waste in the US.”Indeed, since 2017, Heal Vets has worked with partner organizations to repurpose the extraordinary amounts of potential landfill waste, including: • 300,000 pounds of leather from airplane seats. Southwest Airlines and Arise Foundation have donated leather from airplane seats since 2018. These materials are used to make wallets, footballs, and components for moccasins, such as liners and insoles. • 55,216 pounds of tanned deer skins. The Elks, a partner since 2002, donates tanned deer skins from Elks Lodge members around the country that are used to make moccasins, wheelchair gloves, dreamcatchers, pouches and more. • 454,500 pounds of upholstery. Since 2017, La Z Boy has donated upholstery fabric that Heal Vets uses in kits to make messenger bags, oven mitts, bowl cozies and more. • 112,416 pounds of cabinets. Since 2019, American Woodmark has

donated cabinets, which have been repurposed for wood kits to make items like boxes and birdhouses. • 40,000 pounds of automobile seats. Since 2019, Magna has donated auto seats used to make purse kits. Heal Vets is seeking new partners for its dual mission of helping veterans heal and contributing to a sustainable economy. Businesses can donate materials that reduce their environmental impact and support the recovery of veterans who have served their country and need to recover fully from the visible and invisible wounds of war. To learn more about the power of craft therapy and the sustainability efforts of Heal Vets, visit healvets. org.

“Environmental sustainability has taken on a new meaning for us because it relates directly to our mission,” says McClain.

“To us, sustainability means ensuring both the long-term existence of our natural resources and the wellbeing of the veterans we serve.” (StatePoint)

Tips To Keep Kids’ Rooms Clean And Organized For the past year, many of us have lived, played, worked and gone to school right at home, making clutter inevitable – especially when it comes to kids’ bedrooms and playrooms.

2. Organize the Stuff. Find everything a home. Bins and baskets are ideal for small toys and games with tiny pieces, while drawers and shelves are perfect for larger items.

things appear new again when they are pulled out of storage. 3. Create Labels. Getting belongings organized is one thing, but

No matter how many times parents tell their children to clean their rooms, the collection of clothes, schoolwork and toys seems to build endlessly. Take charge of the mess with these tips to create a space that’s fun and functional for kids of all ages.

4. File Away Papers. For older kids, schoolwork should be separated from games and toys, which can be difficult when learning from home and space is limited. Important assignments and documents should be put in folders and binders to prevent them from getting lost and help keep the room looking neat.

1. Prioritize Belongings. Start by considering what needs to go, what can stay and how much storage space you have available. Make it a family project by working with your kids to identify which items they love most and which things they could do without. Once you know what will be kept, prioritize space accordingly, keeping beloved items easily accessible.

take some time to add personal touches. Allowing children to pick colors and patterns for their room can really make them feel like it is their own. If you have the space, a table or a lamp can be a fun addition. If you want to keep things simple, showcasing photos of family and friends or displaying kids’ artwork can do the trick, too. For additional home organization tips and DIY projects, visit duckbrand.com.

Organizing school supplies and at-home desks doesn’t have to be a boring task. Customize folders for each kid or each subject with unique designs using printed Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape, or make labels with Duck Brand Chalkboard Tape.

By making the cleaning and organizing process a fun activity, the hope is that children will be more likely to take ownership of the space and motivated to keep it in order moving forward. However, it doesn’t hurt to revisit the process regularly to keep things fresh.

Is Your Home At Risk For An Electrical Fire? Springtime is peak home-buying and building season. And it’s critical to protect one of the largest investments you’ll make in a lifetime — as well as your loved ones. May, National Electrical Safety Month, is a good time to brush up on potential electrical hazards and learn more about Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) circuit breaker technology, an important life and fire safety device for any new or newly-renovated home — and a National Electrical Code requirement. “Ensuring your home is outfitted with life-saving technology like Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters is critical,” says Ashley Bryant, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Low Voltage Distribution Equipment AFCI Task Force co-chair. “AFCIs are smart devices proven to detect dangerous arcing in damaged wiring behind walls, as well as in damaged electrical cords under furniture or connected to unsafe appliances, preventing deadly electrical fires from occurring.”

According to the National Associa-

tion of Certified Home Inspectors (NACHI), some of the top things to look for in a home are: insufficient electrical service, inadequate overcurrent protection, and dangerous, damaged or noncompliant wiring and wiring connections. To help you ensure the home you’re buying or building is protected from future electrical problems, consider these additional tips: • Hire a certified and licensed

home inspector. A professional

home inspector can tell you a lot about the safety of a home’s electrical system and what may need to be repaired and updated. To ensure you’re hiring someone qualified, visit the NACHI website at nachi. org/certified-inspectors. • Meet National Electrical Code requirements. Make sure your home’s electrical system meets National Electrical Code requirements, including AFCI circuit

breaker installation, which offers key areas of the home protection from electrical fires. While there’s a common misconception that this technology is unaffordable and hard to find, the average cost to protect a new 2,000 square foot, four-bedroom home is only $300, and AFCI circuit breakers are available at electrical supply houses, home improvement stores and online, according to NEMA. Rooms where water is present, like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and outdoor areas, should be equipped with Dual Function AFCI/GFCI circuit breakers. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters and work with AFCI technology to help prevent possible shock and electrocution. If the home doesn’t have this protection, be prepared to ask the owner or builder to make updates in accordance with your state electrical and building codes, or be ready to hire a licensed electrical professional to install these life- and propertysaving devices once you move in. A great resource for more informa-

tion is www.afcisafety.org. • Practice safety at home. A few simple steps can be taken around the house that will help protect your home from electrical fires and keep your family safe. Check to see that light bulbs are the correct wattage and tight in the socket. Make sure no furniture is placed on appliance cords or up against plugged-in receptacles. Protect valuable electronics by installing surge-protective devices and prevent circuit breaker tripping by not overloading any circuit. • Ask the right questions. Ask the seller if they made any updates to the home’s electrical system. Be sure to find out if this was a DIY project or if a licensed electrician did the work under a permit. “During the often overwhelming process of buying or building a home, understanding a bit about electrical safety can help ensure you’re making a sound investment and offer you greater peace of mind,” says Bryant. According to the American Pet Products Association, many of us also drive with our furry friends, from quick trips to the veterinarian’s office to longer road trip adventures.

2. Practice safe exits. Only let your cat out of the carrier when parked. Make sure your cat is wearing a harness and leash before exiting the vehicle.

A recent national survey by Erie Insurance found that more than half of its respondents plan to take at least one road trip this year and 4% plan on traveling with pets. However, traveling with an animal can be dangerous if appropriate safety measures are not taken. Celebrated in May, this National Pet Month is a good time to brush up on a few safety precautions: Tips for traveling with a dog: 1. Restrain your pet. A proper restraint will protect your dog if an accident should occur. The Center for Pet Safety recommends using a quality crash-tested

when driving.

Allowing your dog to stick their head out the window is more dangerous than it seems. It can cause road debris to get into their eyes, nose and mouth and potentially lead to serious injuries.

To avoid disruptions, keep them in the back seat and never allow your dog to sit on your lap. Use a barrier to avoid a dog making its way to the front, and avoid feeding and playing with your dog while driving.

3. Minimize distractions. Erie Insurance found in its recent national survey that 5% of respon-

Teachers and Their Students Remain Resilient Amidst the Pandemic Throughout this past year, teachers have been tasked with conducting hybrid or fully remote learning while guiding students through a global pandemic and nationwide social injustices. Amid such challenges, teachers have developed unique ways to stay resilient, while also driving engagement for students. One program in particular, The Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, provides free leadership curriculum along with opportunities for students to pilot service-learning projects through collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving and reflection. Teachers are using tools like this program to encourage students in making an impact in their local communities. Treena Edwards, a teacher at Lithia Springs High School in Lithia Springs, Ga., explained how

At Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Va., teacher David Thaw explained the whirlwind of teaching during the pandemic and how he ultimately rose to the challenge and learned from his students. “Most of us felt like we were jumping out of a plane and hoped our parachute would work when pulled,” says Thaw. “But what happened was amazing. As much grace I showed my students, they showed me an equal amount of grace and more.”

Tips From A Doctor Who Survived Covid-19 No matter how strictly you follow the rules, those with firsthand experience know that anyone can get COVID-19. “Given my role helping shape COVID-19 policies and procedures since the pandemic surfaced, I know the rules better than most: wear a mask, limit social gatherings, stay six feet apart and so on,” says Dr. Gina Conflitti, chief medical officer for Medicare products at Cigna, one of the nation’s largest health care insurers. “Like many others, I did my best to follow the safety guidance. Yet, in late November 2020, I contracted the virus and faced months of recovery.” While Dr. Conflitti hopes this doesn’t happen to others, she offers the following advice to those who do contract COVID-19: • COVID-19 impacts everyone differently. There are those who cruise through COVID-19 with no symptoms while others have mild symptoms. Some people literally fight for their lives. Don’t expect to have the same experience as oth-

ers, and be sure to communicate with your doctor about the best treatment approach. • Don’t get caught in the blame

COVID-19 is humbling, and even active, independent people may suddenly need help with normal daily activities, like getting groceries and medicines. People want to help, so don’t hesitate to ask so you can concentrate on recovering. • Take care of your mental health. COVID-19 is isolating and can cause depression and anxiety. Stay connected with friends and family safely via phone or video calls. Talk to a professional if things become too difficult to manage on your own. You may have access to behavioral health support through your medical insurance or Medicare plan.

game. Once you contract COVID-19, there’s a tendency to blame yourself. Or you might blame others for infecting you. Many never find out how they were exposed. While contact tracing is important, don’t waste time blaming yourself or others. Save your energy for recovery. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

• Listen to your body. There’s no good time to get sick. Nevertheless, it’s important to listen to your body before returning to work, school and daily activities. Don’t rush it. Prepare by eating healthy, getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, taking vitamins or supplements if your doctor recommends and reducing stress.

• Pay it forward. Even with all the bad things COVID-19 brings, it’s also revealed some of the best aspects of humanity. Pay kindness forward by showing gratitude to clinicians, teachers, restaurant and grocery store workers and others who courageously give their best so our lives are better during this pandemic. • Get the vaccine. Take control of your health by getting vaccinated. Follow your local health department news, and get your COVID-19 vaccination as soon as medically approved. It’s available at no cost and critical to ensuring your safety and the safety of others. For Cigna’s COVID-19 resources, visit cigna.com/coronavirus. “It’s been a difficult time for all of us, but I’m confident the most challenging days are behind us. Stay safe, follow safety procedures and get vaccinated. The only way we can move forward is if we do it together,” says Dr. Conflitti. (StatePoint)

ing students (77%) and meeting the needs of diverse learners (58%). Teacher Holly Hartman of Eastern Lebanon County High School in East Lebanon, Pa., was able to reignite her passion for teaching. “Developing connections virtually is so difficult, but Lead4Change gave me and my students a reason to be in class,” says Hartman. “It brought purpose to the work my students were doing, and they liked knowing they could still make a difference in their community, despite the challenges the pandemic posed.” This program has allowed educators to reinforce students’ immense potential to make a difference on important issues facing their communities. “We are inundated with research reports advising Gen Z students are clueless about societal concerns,” explains Kenia Brown, a teacher at Plantation Middle School in Plantation, Fla. “I found just the opposite. Students were very aware of current events and civic mindedness and thanks to Lead4Change, I actually feel much better about the direction of society.” Brown’s students formed the “Motivational Mondays” team, which promoted positive interpersonal communication within their community by spreading words of kindness on Mondays. The students’ efforts were awarded by Lead4Change as one of the grand prize-winning teams of the Lead4Change Challenge, earning a $10,000 grant for the nonprofit of their choice. However, the students’ impact on the local community and leadership skills acquired were rewards in of themselves. For more information about the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, visit lead4change.org. During one of the most challenging years in recent history, teachers and students are remaining resilient and driving positive change by being leaders in community service. (StatePoint)

What is sarcoidosis? Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease in which the immune system overreacts, causing clusters of inflamed tissue called “granulomas” to form in different organs. It most commonly affects the lungs and lymph nodes, but can also affect the eyes, skin, heart and nervous system. Sarcoidosis is a rare lung disease, with fewer than 200,000 estimated cases in the U.S. Symptoms vary from person to person, and with good treatment and follow-up, may improve.

A: Before I worked with people living with sarcoidosis, I supported patients recovering from traumatic injuries. I’ve noticed a difference in community understanding between a patient with an amputated limb and the patients I support now who live with chronic fatigue or pain. With sarcoidosis, the symptoms often aren’t visible and that can make understanding, which is needed for empathy, more difficult to come by. I would ask that others not judge folks who have symptoms that seem vague or unusual. Patients sometimes express that when asked

about symptoms or challenges, well-meaning family, friends or coworkers can get so caught up in understanding the disease they forget to focus on helpful action. It’s great to want to learn more but even better to follow up with the “how can I help?” so readily offered those with well-known conditions. Q: What advice do you have for patients? A: Never give up! You know your body best and know if something isn’t right. Continue to seek answers, second opinions if needed, and be your own advocate. If you’re on a medication and don’t feel it’s working, talk to your doctor about other options. Or if you’re given directions to get labs regularly and you don’t understand where the lab is, how often to go, what the tests are for, or a host of other questions, ask to speak with someone who has a job like mine to help navigate the health system and get the care you need. It’s important to have someone in your corner.

Q: What words of encouragement do you have for patients? A: We have a team of amazing doctors specifically dedicated to finding and helping patients living with sarcoidosis achieve their optimal health. National organizations like the American Lung Association and Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research are working together to support patients now, and in the future with better treatments and ways to diagnose this disease earlier. To learn more, visit Lung.org/sarcoidosis or Stopsarcoidosis.org. The American Lung Association and Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research work collaboratively to connect with patients, clinics, providers and the general public to raise awareness of sarcoidosis and support individuals living with this disease. Support for this partnership was provided by an unrestricted educational grant from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. (StatePoint)

New Efforts To Provide Fast And Reliable Internet To More Americans Access to reliable home broadband has never been more crucial. Over the last year, we’ve experienced a shift to remote work and virtual learning that will likely last far beyond the pandemic.

before the pandemic, more than 9 million of America’s 56 million school-age children did not have access to reliable internet and were unable to complete after-school assignments.

This rapid shift has revealed just how inaccessible home internet is in the US, particularly in rural America.

Summer Safety Tips For Your Pet

From heat waves to fireworks, summer can take a toll on pets’ emotional and physical wellness. According to some pet experts, the heart of relief for a number of common seasonal pet woes is CBD. Here are some insights into how to use it, plus additional measures you can take for a safe, healthy summer with pets. • Fireworks and Thunder: Unexpected noises can be extremely frightening for pets, causing what’s known as situational stress. If possible, try administering Calming CBD-infused Edibites, which contains soothing and relaxing properties, about an hour before you expect fireworks or thunderstorms to occur. (Helpful hint: it can also be used to relieve situational stress associated with travel, guests, etc.)

Exercise also helps. Whether you take an extra long walk or play fetch, wearing your pet out earlier in the day might help them stay calm or even sleep through noise disruptions. Additionally, you can prepare by setting up a quiet space for your pet, full of their favorite blankets and toys. Finally, be mindful that pets often react to loud noises by running away. According to the ASPCA, one-in-five pets that go missing run off after hearing loud noises like fireworks. Bring cats indoors during storms and fireworks. If you must take a dog outside, keep them securely leashed. Microchips and up-to-date ID tags can help you safely reunite with your pet should they go missing. • Heat: If you’re sweating, there’s

a good chance your pet is too.

• Allergies: Allergies can wear pets down in numerous ways, including weakening their immune system. CBD hemp oil however can offer an immunity boost by activating the body’s two-way communication system between the brain and the immune system.

Keep pets hydrated by constantly refilling their bowls with fresh, clean water. Choose mornings or evenings for exercising with dogs to avoid the hottest part of the

pavement contact, letting your dog walk in the grass instead. If your pup’s paws do get affected by the hot pavement, applying a topical CBD solution such as Canna Care

Do You Believe In These Three Common 401(k) Misconceptions? If you contribute a portion of your income to a 401(k), you may think you’re all set for a comfortable retirement. Experts say it’s important to take a closer look at these savings.

to strategize paying off debt while also planning for your future. You can also use free tools like the debt

ments for multiple accounts, for example, you’ll only have to monitor a single account.

• True or False: “Paying down my student loan debt as quickly as possible is more important than saving for my retirement.” This can be true…or false, depending on your situation. While you should not delay saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to determine how

looking for more ways to help set yourself up for a financially secure future – here are three tips to keep in mind: 1. Check your account. It might sound simple, but logging in regularly (try for at least once a quarter) can help ensure you’re on track with your savings goal. Be sure to use the calculators and projection tools your retirement plan offers.

To help you get started, Lincoln Financial Group is breaking down three common misconceptions about saving for retirement revealed in a recent survey of U.S. employees by Lincoln Financial and CivicScience: • True or False: “Saving enough to meet the employer match is enough to keep me on track for a comfortable retirement.” This one is (most likely) false! An employer match (if offered) is a good place to start, but if you really want to make sure you have enough of a nest egg to retire when and how you want, a good rule of thumb is to save at least 10 to 15 percent of your salary.

calculator found at LincolnFinancial.com to help you make a plan for paying off debt. • True or False: “I’ve thought about moving money from an old employer’s 401(k) into my current employer’s 401(k), but it seems like it would be too much of a hassle.” This one is false! While it is important to consider all options of your 401(k) platform prior to making a decision, the process for a rollover is typically very easy and brings multiple benefits. Instead of tracking investment selections, performance or state-

This is another reason why we are focused on working with employers to educate their employees so they can achieve the retirement they envision.” If you’re

2. Update (or create) a goal. When you have a goal to work towards, research shows you’ll be more likely to increase your contributions, and therefore, increase your savings.

A common allergy symptom is rash, which can cause pets to scratch and bite their skin, only worsening irritation. To treat rash, consider using CBD hemp oil to support a healthy inflammatory response and ease stress, along with a topical CBD product to soothe skin irritations. • Hip and Joint Discomfort: Summer may mean an uptick in nature hikes and long days at the dog park. As a result, your dog may experience hip or joint discomfort. Consider adding a beneficial supplement to their everyday regimen, like Hip & Joint Edibites, which contains full-spectrum hemp extract with naturally occurring CBD, along with glucosamine and chondroitin, a combination known to help maintain normal healthy cartilage and joint function, as well as support joint flexibility and mobility. Depending on your pet’s health needs, you may want to upgrade to a higher potency pet CBD product like a hemp oil that you can massage onto their joints.

3. Meet with a professional. If your employer offers retirement consultants, schedule a meeting, or consider speaking with a financial professional, who can help you understand the full picture of your savings and where to focus your efforts.

Unsure which CBD solution will work best for your pet? Check out Pet Releaf’s Product Finder tool at petreleaf.com/product-finder, which factors in age, weight, level of discomfort and wellness needs. Use the code RELEAF25 through July 31, 2021 to receive 25% off and free shipping.

Recently, I’ve been watching the news with my dad on CNBC. The headline news is that a man named Beeple sold NFT for $69 million! I was so surprised and did some research on my own and I learned so much, and think it would be nice to share some of my knowledge with you! Nft stands for non fungible token.

Abhiveer Annoji

Akbar’s Challenge Akbar was once greeted by a consortium of nobles from different parts of the kingdom. They told the emperor that they had come for

the consortium. Akbar thought for a moment and agreed.

That means there can only be one of that item. For example, you have five one dollar bills you can exchange for one five dollar bill. For nfts that is not possible, it is difficult to find good equivalents. Nfts are a type of really absurd crypto currency.

The nobles tried their best, but the cloth was too short to cover the entire body. If they moved the cloth up, the feet left uncovered, and if they pulled it a bit below, the head came into the open. Akbar presented Birbal with the challenge. Birbal took a look at the cloth and told Akbar, “Your majesty, please fold your knees.”

They are built on a blockchain network. That means who’s selling it and how much it costs is all listed on a blockchain network. Making it an nft is basically giving it a badge of uniqueness. Another thing I mentioned earlier was this man named “beeple” who sold an nft for 69 million dollars! Selling that Nft was no easy feat though. He worked 15 years on that project! He sold a digital art piece. He actually put it on auction. I bet he was surprised as the prices went higher and higher it was truly unbelievable. It eventually sold for 69 million dollars. Also it is very odd how a woman bought one of beeple’s nfts for 1 dollar! Before he was that popular. She was offered 50 million dollars for the nft, but she didn’t sell it to anyone. Anyway wrapping it up nfts can be anything digitized a movie clip or a piece of art. That is basically it. I hope you learned something new!

“Alright. I have a test for all of you,” Akbar said removing his waistband. He lied on the floor, and told the nobles, “Please cover me from

The emperor did as said. Birbal spread the cloth and this time it covered Akbar from head to toe. The nobles apologized to Akbar and Birbal, and left the court never to challenge Birbal’s position again.

Asian American Complete Count Committee Honored At 2021 CAN Butler Awards By Sumaiya Malik @SumaiyaSaidThis Community Advancement Network, a partnership that leverages mutual resources for success, recognized Asian American Complete Count Committee, AACCC, in this year’s CAN Annual Celebration and Butler Awards for outstanding work in ensuring Asians are counted during Census 2020.

Co-Chair Sumit Das Gupta shared some slides to show how the team planned out the organized effort.

According to Ashwin Ghatalia, co-chair AACCC the committee worked through imaginative work using media to reach people through a large number of Asian organizations as partners.

Funding for the work was provided by City of Austin, Travis County, United Way and the Coulter Foundation.

Other core team members at AACCC included Anaami PandiHaji, Quynhanh Tran, Hannah Roh, Fang Fang, and Saatvik Ahluwalia.

A 2019 Census Bureau prediction showed that Asian population would be the hardest to count. As a result, a group of community leaders came together to form AACCC to ensure that maximum number of Asian Americans in Greater Austin area fill out the census 2020 form.

The team included seniors as well as young, creative innovators and relied on volunteers within the community. Covid-19 restricted face-to-face contact, but they worked across jurisdiction, religion, geography so that everyone is counted, Gururaj said. She gave credit to Alice Yi, a stalwart in community building, for getting AACCC off the ground.

In September 2020, once the Census outreach was complete, AACCC reorganized and became Austin Asian Communities Civic Coalition keeping the acronym, to ensure that Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), the fastestgrowing population in Central Texas, were accurately counted during the 2020 Census and a voice during the 2020 General Election. Recent success of “Stop Asian Hate” attests to that, Ghatalia said. https://www.aaccc-atx.org/ “This is our new incarnation but since we carry the same heritage, the new name still identifies with the work on the census. It is a continuum,” Gupta said.

Life Lessons From Rizwan Shuja, Entrepreneur, Author And Motivational Speaker By Sumaiya Malik Entrepreneur, author and longtime Austin resident Rizwan Shuja, 48, came to understand life through hard work and an inner wisdom. Self-made Shuja shares his secret to happiness and how to live a content life in two books he coauthored with his brother Dr. Imran Khwaja, Following is his conversation with Austin South Asian about his first book Cycle of Fulfilment (available on Amazon). The self-help book offers a unique perspective on what is real success. “I came to America with a few hundred dollars and now own 14 gas stations,” Shuja said. Shuja shared his story of how he hard he worked in his first gas station and also was its manager. He worked day and night in his first investment and made it grow.

His diligence at work and efforts towards community building and

alliances were some of the reasons of his success, but he gave more

credit to his state of mind. Initially his goal was to be successful in his career. Along with that he continued to understand what others thought was the meaning of success. “I listened to inspirational speakers who talked about money, health and relationships,” Shuja said. “I came to the conclusion that success is mental fulfilment, physical health, relationship with god and people, career/job/business and financial wealth,” he said. Shuja went on to explain what he means. “If you have a positive state of mind your relationships will improve,” he said. To him the goal is to get rid of negative emotions. They come back to hurt you, he said. “If you want to love, give it,” he said. Our minds are designed to keep us

away from painful emotions, Shuja said. The real goal behind any kind of financial success was to feel better. Focus and productivity goes up when we are feeling positive. He suggests that one should focus on achieving mental and emotional fulfillment as a primary goal in life. He asked himself, why not cultivate love, empathy, kindness and need of giving. Instead of being at the right place at the right time, he suggests that being the right person is more important. He also suggests writing down goals and evaluating one’s achievements. As a motivational speaker, Shuja has a following because his earnestness and passion shines through. Shuja’s books are available on Amazon. He can be reached on his Facebook.

How To Make A Hybrid Workforce Successful With metrics for COVID-19 improving, many companies are starting to consider returning to work in person. But most employees and employers agree it won’t look like it did before.

Indeed, research shows a large chunk of companies today are sizing their physical offices down, as more people work from home all the time or part of the week.

Havner says that such tools function as a virtual corner office vantage point, helping to smooth out communication, collaboration and workflow issues created by hybrid arrangements and decentralized workspaces.

And hybrid offices, arrangements where team members are in two or three days a week and work remotely the rest of the time, seem to be the wave of the future.

Equally important to communication is simply being mindful that hybrid offices can cause challenging dynamics among team members.

However, experts say that business owners and managers should not approach hybrid offices the same way they do completely remote set-ups.

Taking steps to address those issues preemptively can save headaches down the line. This includes making everyone accountable for meeting goals and deadlines.

Unfortunately, for many, this new way of life has also meant avoiding healthcare settings and delaying medical care for other serious health threats, including bladder cancer.

The good news is that there are technology advancements being used during diagnosis and surveillance that can help improve detection and lead to more complete removal of the cancer.

Experts warn that bladder cancer, one of the least-discussed types of cancer, often goes undiagnosed. Many people ignore its most common symptoms, and this reality has been intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If your healthcare provider or urologist believes you may have bladder cancer, be sure to ask about Blue Light Cystoscopy. In addition to a physical exam and several other tests, the cystoscopy is a standard medical procedure that allows a doctor to look directly into your bladder for suspicious tissue.

As this often-overlooked cancer becomes more of a focus during Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in May, it will be an opportunity to remind people that cancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic and appropriate healthcare measures must be taken promptly and not delayed. New Ways Families With Kids Can Go Green

Having kids can mean having a lot of stuff, not all of which is made from eco-friendly materials. However, if you’re like many parents, you want your children to have a clean, healthy planet to live in when they grow up. Going green while parenting might sound challenging, but it’s definitely not impossible. These tips and insights can help get you started:

Composting Composting is a simple way to reduce waste and teach children about how they can positively impact the environment. Start by setting up a compost bin and work with your children to identify ingredients that can be added to it. A good compost recipe includes materials such as dry leaves, household waste like vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells, and a layer of soil. Add some water and watch as science comes to life. Kids will love seeing their compost turn to soil over time and allowing them to be hands on throughout the process teaches them the concept of recycling in a realistic and relatable way. With a few simple tweaks, parents can make choices that better protect the environment, while setting a great example for kids. (StatePoint)

Microscopic silica particles can penetrate deep into a person’s lungs and greatly affect their ability to breathe. Symptoms typically worsen over time, especially if exposure to silica dust is ongoing. Over time, the particles can cause lung inflammation that leads to the formation of lung nodules and scarring called pulmonary fibrosis.

Individuals with silicosis have a higher risk of developing other health issues like tuberculosis, bronchitis and lung cancer. 3. There are three types of silicosis. Acute silicosis causes cough, weight loss and fatigue within a few weeks or years of exposure to inhaled silica. Chronic silicosis, which is the most

Lastly, accelerated silicosis occurs within 10 years of high-level exposure. 4. There is no cure for silicosis, making prevention essential. While there is no cure for silicosis, the good news is that this lung disease is completely preventable. As you head outside to enjoy the spring weather, allergens like pollen may come as a shock to the system.

Try adding a natural anti-inflammatory daily oral supplement. Pycnogenol, an extract from French maritime pine bark, is shown in research to reduce the body’s response to histamines without the side effects typically experienced with allergy medications, such as drowsiness. Many a day we pass through the day without being aware of what we are doing. If we consciously spend every minute of our time being aware of ourselves, we would be able to contribute much more and have a meaningful time. Being aware of walking and opening the door to the building will make us look back to see whether anyone is coming behind us!!

Ms. Ketika Tyagi

Similarly, as we enter the elevator if we just glance back to see whether anyone also wants to enter, we shall be more willing to wait at the door of the elevator so that the person can also enter. Even just smiling at a stranger on the street makes you feel good. Are You Growing The Right Type of Grass? Choosing the right type of grass optimizes the chances that your lawn will be healthy, beautiful and easy to maintain. However, experts say that there are many factors to consider. “You may have your heart set on a specific type of grass because of where you grew up or because the Joneses down the street have a beautiful lawn and they grow XYZ grass. But what’s best for your lawn depends on where you live now and your growing conditions,” says landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga. A free video series from Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, can help you master your lawn. In a recent Exmark Original video, “Done In A Weekend, Grass 101,” Scott discusses the various benefits, maintenance needs and other considerations of each grass type. Here he shares some top factors to keep in mind: • Climate: Grasses are typically divided into two temperature categories: warm-season and cool-season. Warm-season grasses grow best in hot, southern climates reaching 80 to 95 degrees, and go dormant when temperatures consistently drop below 65 degrees. Species like Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia and Centipede all grow best in hot, humid regions, whereas Bermuda

grass grows best in hot, arid areas. On the other side of things are

mer, and warm-season grasses will be dormant longer.

• Water: Different types of grass need different amounts of water to thrive. Warm-season grasses tend to be more drought-tolerant and require less water. • Use: Heavy-turf grass like Zoysia or Bermuda stand up to activity best, whereas cool-season grasses typically don’t do well in hightraffic areas where children play or dogs run. • Maintenance: What’s required to maintain a healthy lawn also deserves consideration. In general, cool-season grasses cost less to install but more to maintain. Because they don’t form that dense carpet-like structure that heat-loving grasses do, cool-season grasses need to be watered and tended more.

cool-season grasses, which grow best in northern regions where temperatures fall between 60-70 degrees. Species include tall and fine Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and annual and perennial Ryegrass. Living in the middle, in what’s known as the “Transitional Zone” can be both a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, you may have more grass choices, but on the downside, cool-season grasses may look worn-out by late sum-

• Sun and Shade: While there are exceptions, warm-season grasses generally grow best in full sun areas getting 8 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, and cool-season grasses grow best in moderate or medium shade areas getting between 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. You may notice that no one talks about “full shade” -- areas getting less than 4 hours of sunlight daily -- when discussing grass. That’s because there’s no grass that thrives in these conditions

While visiting the site, you can also access other Exmark Original Series, including “Done-In-AWeekend Projects”, “Prime Cuts” and “Dream Yards” videos. By understanding your property’s growing conditions and a bit about grass types, you’ll be well-positioned to select the best grass for your needs and lifestyle. (StatePoint)

Boost comfort and ambiance by applying the same attention to detail when decorating your patio as you would indoors. Beyond furniture that’s comfortable enough to lounge on all day or evening, incorporate throws, pillows and even rugs. Add splashes of color and vibrancy by hanging outdoor wall art, or, if you’re feeling extra creative, painting a mural. Paper lanterns hung above your patio dining area can bring a touch of romance to meals enjoyed outdoors. And get inspired by the nature around you by ensuring your patio features greenery. Potted and hanging plants or even ivy, jasmine or roses grown against a wall or all good choices. Beauty Inspired by Nature These days, manufactured stone is not just for the side of your home. The possibilities for using it in and around the patio are endless. Add drama to a boundary wall between the patio and yard; beautify your outdoor kitchen’s grill unit, pizza oven, table or island; and enhance seating around the fire pit or fireplace and the bases of pergolas or columns. Just be sure to select products that look like authentic stone even upon careful inspection, and are designed to withstand the elements. For example, the choices available from ProVia are artfully crafted to produce a realistic, dramatic effect, mimicking stones from unique geographic regions in a range of cuts. Unlike other options on the market, their colors permeate throughout the entire stone, giving every manufactured stone a realistic look with hues that last for years. He told media persons after taking the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine, “The government hospitals provide healthcare services to the majority of poor people.
