10 Tips For Organizing Homework Assignments By Hao Lam It’s 7 p.m. and your child just remembered a homework assignment that’s due tomorrow. If this happens all too often, it’s time to get organized to help combat stress for you and your child, while creating a sustainable routine to accomplish daily homework tasks. Here are some great tips to stay on track and save everyone’s sanity:
4. Set up a homework station in a quiet area of the home. Lay out everything that is
for your child to study. 5. Make sure the work area is free of distrac-
8.Talk about how to do research and what online resources are acceptable. Discuss plagiarism and appropriate ways to use these online sources. 9. If focusing is a problem, spend a few minutes working out a list of priorities and how to tackle them. Cross each one off as it’s completed to create a sense of accomplishment.
1. Use different colored folders. Your child can use red for history, green for English, blue for math, etc. Keep homework assignments in their respective folders. Assigned work can go in the left pocket and completed work can move to the right.
10. When homework is completed, proofread it, put all work into a backpack, and place it by the door. This will give your student a sense of routine and accomplishment for the evening.
2. Mark due dates on a big calendar and make a shopping list for any supplies that may beneeded for assignments.Use colored markers for different subjects and due dates. 3. Set up email or text message reminders to help everyone know what’s ahead.Be sure to also goover the assignments and talk about how to accomplish them in a timely fashion.

Nepal’s Parliament Elects Bidhya Devi Bhandari As Nation’s First Female President

Parliament speaker Onsari Gharti announced that Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist received 327 votes against her opponent’s 214 in parliament on Wednesday. Bhandari is the deputy leader of the party led by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli. He was elected earlier this month and leads a coalition government. Bhandari is Nepal’s second president since the Himalayan nation was turned into a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy. Ram Baran Yadav remained president for seven years because it took that long for the constitution to be prepared and adopted.
7. Set aside a time to work on school assignments each day. This will get your child into the routine of working to complete a task, leading to fewer frantic moments.

Pakistan’s Zia Mohyuddin Holds Court in Austin
By Sumaiya Malik On Tuesday, October 13, Zia Mohyuddin, a renowned Pakistani artist and the president of National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Pakistan, delivered a talk at UT Austin, organized by the South Asia Institute. Zia Mohyuddin’s visit marked the tenth anniversary of NAPA, which has an exchange program with UT Austin. The visit also served as a prelaunch of his new book, God of my Idolatry, which will be available for purchase in November.

Butler’s School of Music. The actor, performer, writer, educationist talked first was about the back ground of NAPA and how much it has grown on it’s tenth anniversary and later about his new book, ‘God of my Idolatry’. He read three passages from his new book. Topics from the book included his love for Barnes and Noble, waiting period between connecting flights, and the bridal suite. Mr. Mohyuddin gave the background of the struggles of Pakistani theater and why there was a neces-

He said, ‘Right from inception of Pakistan, theater has suffered… Muslim middle class has forever, looked upon theater… with scorn.’ He added that the musical scene was slightly different where ‘ustad’ or teacher was hired for in house training for children with musical capabilities, but the children were categorically told that any desire for a musical career was futile. In spite of limitations, theater did not vanish. Untiring effort of few helped it survive, but the efforts were marginal. He said that the decision to form NAPA in 2004 came as a surprise but the government let him finetune the idea of having an independent body promoting art and theater. It took one year in planning and in 2005 NAPA was formed.
Connecther Partners With Intel To Show He Named Me Malala By Sumaiya Malik On October 9, 2015, Connecther, a local non-profit, partnered with Intel to host a free screening of He Named me Malala at the Arbor Cinema at Great Hills in Austin. A diverse section of Austinites of all ages attended the screening.

As the audience stepped out, Connecther asked the guests what they thought of the movie. One budding activist said, ‘Going to this event make me what to go out and change the world for the better.”
The documentary movie, directed by David Guggenheim, has received rave reviews from critics but it’s a big feather in Austin’s cap that the Malala Fund reached out to Connecther to arrange for a showing of the movie in Austin. Lila Igram, the founder/executive director of Connecther, built the non-profit from ground up in Austin. Connecther provides a platform for non-profits to raise funds for their projects. That was the beginning of the formal ‘proliferation of dramatic activity.’ Then in 2008 came Napa Repertory Theater to hone the skills in front of ticket paying audience. To date fifty-five productions have been put forth from Ancient Greek plays to the expressionists and modernists eg Chekov. The conversation went on to ‘God of my Idolatry’, Zia Mohyuddin’s second book. Filled with nostalgia about his past, Zia connected the present to his childhood providing reason to the connection. He talked about his love or Barnes and Noble in an era where people don’t have time to read. He said that he is surprised why the staff in the prestigious book store does not look at you grudgingly when he shows no intention to buy anything but sits and reads there. He connected that feeling of guilt of not buying a book he is reading in store toa similar guilt from his childhood when he used to go cloth shopping with his mother and older sisters. His second passage was about the swizzle stick and the third about being given a bridal suite as his changing room before a performance. The audience was in splits. Zia Mohiyuddin’s sharp wit had people clapping at the end. Dr. Kamran Ali, the director of the SAI, moderated the conversation and invited the audience to ask questions. But it’s not easy to ask the icon anything. When Zia Mohyuddin talks to an audience, he holds court. He is the king of theater and every dialog he delivers has a multifaceted expression. If he quotes a character, his voice takes on that persona. If he shares his own opinion, he will revert to being king of a researched opinion, which will hold unquestionable weight. It was only expected that people would be in too much awe to be able to ask Mr. Mohyuddin anything. They were honored by Zia Mohyuddin’s presence.

Safe Ways To Relieve Dry Eyes
Dry eye syndrome -- when your body doesn’t produce enough tears to keep your eyes moist -- is not just uncomfortable, it can lead to eye damage. Unfortunately, the problem is common and can worsen with age. In fact, Americans spend about a third of a billion dollars annually on over-the-counter eye drops, or “artificial tears,” a solution which is only temporary. And their prescription counterparts may produce such side effects as allergic reactions, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, stinging and blurred vision, among others. Indeed, the preservatives in eye drops themselves can even be a source of dry eye syndrome. So before reaching for those drops, consider these alter-

stretch. Consider Supplements Recent discoveries show that protective plant compounds from the South American maqui berry can reduce light-induced damage to tear glands and enhance tear production. Consider taking maqui berry extract, which can represent an effective approach to restore comfort and composition of one’s tears.

3 Habits For Healthy Skin This Season Want a glowing complexion? The services of a professional esthetician can run you a pretty penny, but luckily, an at-home routine can promote great skin, too.
and remove makeup with its heated makeup removal plate. Then, use a foaming cleanser along with the Japanese-style cleaning brush to cleanse your skin, purify pores and gently remove dirt, excess oil and lingering makeup.
For a convenient and affordable spa effect at home, consider the following.
Supplement this routine with more targeted cleansing twice a week. Use the silicone brush attachment and your favorite cleanser to focus on problem areas, such as blackheads around the nose.
“If you’re accustomed to thinking of eye drops as the sole solution, it can be difficult to imagine an oral treatment having such a profound impact on tear production. However, protective plant compounds can actually restore your eye’s delicate ecosystem from the inside out,” says Michael A. Smith, MD, senior health scientist for Life Extension and host of Healthy Talk on RadioMD.com. Along with a maqui supplement, consider upping your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which boost production of the oily layer of your eyes, improving the integrity of the tear film and slowing the evaporation of tears. In addition to flaxseeds, walnuts, salmon and other foods that are chock full of the nutrient, consider omega-3 fatty acid supplements. For more information, visit www.lifeextension. com/Tear or call 866-280-2851.
Screen time can also worsen dry eye syndrome. Unfortunately, this is one thing that’s hard to avoid. Screens may be an integral part of your work day, and you likely carry a smartphone or tablet with you when you are on-the-go.
Embrace Your Four Eyes
However, you can take frequent breaks from staring at your screens. Be sure to schedule time periodically where you actively look away from your screen -- a perfect time to take care of the whole body and stand up and

Dry eye syndrome can be exacerbated by contacts. It can also be caused by LASIK surgery to correct one’s vision. You can reduce symptoms by sticking with your glasses.
Healthy Habits Your skin truly is a reflection of your overall health, so adopting habits that benefit the entire body is crucial for a glowing complexion. Strive for a wellbalanced diet, rich with essential vitamins and nutrients and be sure to stay hydrated. If you are a smoker with a desire to quit, the promise of healthier skin may just be the motivation needed to kick the habit. Drink in moderation. Lastly, get plenty of exercise -- just be sure to wash up shortly afterward to avoid clogged pores. At-Home Care Innovations in the skin care marketplace are making it easier to develop a routine at home that promotes the same smooth, glowing skin you can get from a spa treatment. For example, the Panasonic MicroFoaming Cleansing Device is a gentle Japanese-style cleansing tool, designed for deep, gentle pore cleansing. Rest and Relaxation Between packed schedules and a screen-loving culture, it can be difficult for lights-out to occur at a reasonable hour. However, proper rest is needed for your body to function at its peak -- and of course, a good night’s sleep is the basis of the concept of beauty rest. The National Sleep Foundation’s recommends that adults ages 18 to 64 should aim for seven to nine hours nightly Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services links stress with acne and other skin problems. Whether you prefer bubble baths, a yoga practice, or quality time with friends, for the sake of skin beauty and health, (as well as your happiness) take time out from your schedule to reduce stress. Diwali Festival With Dance And Music On November 7 At Zilker Hil side Theater
By Sumaiya Malik
When Anjali Sharadh and Dr. Madhu Huda attended the Chaand Raat Festival organized by their dear friend, Jiaa Jabbar, at Asian American Resource Center in April, they were so impressed by the organization and set up that they convinced their friend to arrange a similar style festival for Diwali.
Entry to the Diwali Festival is free and three thousand people are coming and more are expected, as Zilker Park is open and visited by people from all over Austin. Like
and music for entertainment and a complete line of performances moderated by Indu who herself is a great singer and dancer. Jiaa Jabbar mentioned that the biggest
Jiaa, had worked hard for Chaand Raat with stalls of clothing, jewelry, henna and special sponsor booths and had received an over whelming response. She decided to give it a shot for Diwali. After six months of untiring efforts of phone calls and meetings and reaching out to sponsors, Jiaa Jabbar is ready to host a Diwali Festival for the Desi community in Austin at the Zilker Hilside Theater, at 2201 Barton Springs Road, in Austin, on November 7, 2015, from 1 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.
While reservations for stalls is still on for $300, much of the festival is finalized with food from Tempura Grill, Hyderabad House, Dawat Restaurant, Shawarma Point, Zarab Kabab and Swad.
At 8 p.m. Bharat Natyam will entertain the crowd followed by Agni Dance School, Dil Se Dance Company, Remember India, Dancing Divas of Austin, and Michael Lintz American Sitar Singer.
Anu’s Mithai is the big treat for dessert. Swad’s sugarcane juice is always a hit and will again be available.
Jiaa reached out to forty DJs all across Texas to come perform in Austin, but costs run high. She almost gave up when one DJ agreed to perform for free as he wanted his performance a gift to Austin.
Non-Profits such as Saheli and Humanity First are also sponsoring the festival, but the big draw is the musical evening and the DJ who is coming from Houston to entertain Austin. the Chaand Raat festival, Diwali will have stalls and booths with jewelry, clothing, henna, and more. There are at least five or six food vendors with vegetarian or non-veg options. Established companies have sponsored the event. There is dance
sponsors are Charles Maund Toyota who will have a booth and flyers. Other sponsors include Munira Umita from Life Insurance and Round Rock Party Rental. Vegetarian Swad Restaurant is also one of the sponsors.
Zargun Jewelry and Clothing by Mariam are also on the list of vendors. The musical evening program will start at 7 p.m. and go on till 11 p.m. The show will start with the Kids Talent Show. Harveen Kaur, the thirteen year old who won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa program will perform two songs live.
It’s going to be one glamorous night. A line of volunteers will help Jiaa set up and clean up. As before Osama from Forty Acres will cover the event. This will be an outside event and appropriate shoes will make the fun multiply. We wish Jiaa happy Diwali and big success on the Diwali festival on November 7. Interested parties can contact Jiaa Jabbar at 214-3942381.
Desi Kids At ACL
By Sumaiya Malik
Austin is lucky to be home to Austin City Limits (ACL), a music festival famous all over USA. Music lovers fly in from all over to attend it. Not only adults, but also high school and college going students are seen participating in the fun. In fact, the excitement for ACL begins when kids start high school. Favorite bands come and perform in the ever so popular Zilker Park. The trend for Desi high school kids to enjoy ACL has been on the low side, but who ever goes comes back with only the best memories of the grand finale, food stalls, being with friends and swaying to the music. The Austin South Asian asked four Desi moms their thoughts about sending Desi kids to ACL. Lubna Ashraf , the mother of a junior in Westlake High was in favor of
sending her musically inclined daughter to ACL. She encouraged everyone to support local music and hear new bands. She added that the best way to let kids
She thought October is a good month for the festival because kids in college need a break after their first tests at the University. She cautioned that she would not recommend kids below eighteen to venture to ACL because of all the smoking and drinking that happens along with the music.
go is in groups where they have a good time with friends. She cautioned that kids do separate and cell phones don’t always work so a meeting point must be decided ahead of time.
Samara Qureshi, who grew up in Pakistan said, ‘When we were growing … we had our musical inspirations and our kids are growing up here have their own music icons. My ‘desi’ kids are broadening my musical horizons.’ She felt lucky that ACL is so accessible to our kids and families. Her high school sophomore spent the day at ACL and navigated herself pretty well.
Seema Azam, the mother of a freshman in college, goes to ACL every year and loves the fact that ACL is all out doors and lively.
With all the positive responses, one wonders why the festival has not been a ‘must go’ for the Desi community. Small groups of friends in
the Desi community do go, but it is something they might do once in a few years. Maheen Baqai, a mother of three kids in different ages, qualified the reasons why some parents and kids are reluctant although all three kids of hers (sophomore at UT, junior at high school and seventh grader) have been to ACL.
She said that if the kids are into music, they must make full use of ACL once they are at an age where they can be responsible and know what things to avoid at ACL. But ACL is not everyone’s cup of tea. Many kids with allergies are unhappy with the setup and would rather go to a covered concert. My own opinion about ACL has softened over the years probably because ACL has become less chaotic and more organized over the years. In our home, we started going to ACL eight years ago and
have been going almost every year. My 9th grader went for the whole day with friends. A parent dropped the girls and we were assigned to pick them up. I remember waiting with my husband by the grand ACL sign scanning the people exiting to find my child and feeling relieved and happy when the girls came our way all excited and happy. Since then we too have gone whenever we can. We just have become smarter about drop off, pick up, meeting points, targeting our favorite bands and knowing when it’s time to head home. We have always managed to enjoy. No place is perfect and weirdness does happen, but the big question is can our kids navigate through it. We will never know unless we let them have that experience while we are still a text away.

5 Stages Of Retirement Preparation: What To Know Now
It’s never too early or too late to save for your retirement, whether you’re a young saver or approaching your retirement years. “There are actions you can take to help boost your retirement readiness at key points throughout your life,” says Jamie Ohl, president of Retirement Plan Services at Lincoln Financial Group. According to a 2015 Lincoln Financial Group M.O.O.D. of America study, 92 percent of Americans agree that putting money into a retirement plan, like a 401(k), contributes to a more secure financial future. Ohl and the professionals at Lincoln are offering retirement savings tips for various life stages that can help all savers take full advantage of their workplace retirement plan and become more confident about their retirement readiness at every step along the way.
Getting Started It may be tempting to spend your new paycheck exclusively on items you want or need now, and delay saving for retirement altogether
at this point. Lincoln’s M.O.O.D. study shows that 78 percent of Millennials feel that payments they need to make now, like bills, housing, and other necessities, make it difficult for them to put money toward their future. However, your monthly budget
should include a line for retirement savings. Now is the time to create a habit of contributing regularly to your retirement savings plan at work. As soon as it’s available to you, enroll in your employer-sponsored plan and save at least up to the company match. Saving a small but steady amount early on can compound over time and pay off down the road. Keeping It Up Life can get complicated as you get older. From mortgage and car payments to education expenses to raising kids, competing financial priorities can distract you from retirement savings goals. Resist
the temptation to stop saving altogether or borrow from your plan. Lincoln’s 2015 American Consumer Study shows that 49 percent of Generation X and younger Baby Boomers would like to put more money into saving for retirement, but cannot due to present financial constraints. Now more than ever, keep up the momentum. A financial professional can help you evaluate your retirement savings picture and identify ways to maintain savings growth. As you navigate your career and make job changes, be sure to evaluate a potential employer’s benefits offering -- including a retirement savings plan -- as part of your overall compensation. Learn about what options are available to you, such as a company match, investment choices and other resources to help you stay on track and keep a holistic view of
your savings. In the Homestretch At this point you have done most of the hard work and the retirement you’ve envisioned is in sight. Continue to save and set aside extra money from income boosts or bonuses. Work with a financial consultant to reset your savings strategies and learn about other savings tools like income guarantee options that may be available in your plan. Familiarize yourself with Social Security benefits, and any other income sources you’ve secured throughout your career. For more retirement preparation tips, visit www.lincolnfinancial. com. Being prepared for retirement requires some work and planning. For a more comfortable financial future, don’t delay your efforts. (statepoint)
Turkey Carving Tips For Thanksgiving
Cooking is only part of Thanksgiving prep. For many hosts, carving the bird represents the most intimidating feast feat.
Start by removing each leg and thigh from the body of the turkey, using your hands to separate, and
Don’t chicken out! There are some quick tips you can follow to demystify the process, from the carving experts at Smith’s Housewares, a manufacturer of innovative knife sharpeners and kitchen tools: • The first thing you will want to carve out is a proper amount of time to cook the turkey. When coordinating your schedule that morning, keep in mind that between taking the turkey out of the oven and cooking it, you should allot about 20 minutes. This waiting period is not frivolous. It makes the handling of the hot turkey easier on your hands, and gives the meat’s juices crucial time to redistribute. • If your turkey is tied, remove the string first.
your knife to slice through the
meat. • Next, separate the thighs from the legs by pulling on a leg and using your knife to slice. Ta r g e t the ‘V’ area with y o u r knife, feeling around until you find the joint. S l i c e the meat a w a y from the t h i g h bone and place it directly on your serving platter.
• The next step is to remove the wings using a similar method. By identifying where the joint is; you can avoid slicing bone. • Using an even stroke, slice each breast from slightly off the midline. Slice down, gently pulling the breast away on the side you’ve chosen. Slice each breast into quarter inch thick slices. Place on your platter. Alternatively, cut slices of breast directly off the turkey, parallel to the rib cage. Just ensure you keep the slices even on both sides. • Be a sharp chef. To make the job smooth sailing, and avoid tearing the meat and making a mess, use a sharp, straightedge knife and a carving fork to steady your meat. You’ll save time and energy and get better results. • In the days leading up to the holiday, make sure your kitchen is ready to go by sharpening all the
knives you will need for food prep that day, particularly your turkey carving knife. A compact electric knife sharpener is a great kitchen essential to have on hand for everyday use, as well as for major holiday feasts, as it is ideal for precise sharpening of straight edge knives. Those from Smith’s Housewares feature a manual slot for polishing a freshly ground edge or a quick touch-up of already sharp knives. They can be found at walmart.com. • Add a garnish to the serving platter to make your turkey a feast for the eyes. As the main course, it deserves a bit of extra flair. Fresh inseason herbs, fruits and vegetables all work well to complete the look. Don’t let the final throes of preparation be the most difficult on Turkey Day. All you need are the right, wellmaintained tools and proper technique. (statepoint)

Tips For Choosing And Using Your 2016 Medicare Health Plan
It’s that time of year again: The Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) begins October 15 and runs through December 7.
“Choosing a plan isn’t as simple as just keeping the one you had last year or looking only at the monthly premium costs.
Medicare is a critical source of health care for millions of Americans, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) sets this time for people to select and make changes to their plans each year.
The goal should be to choose a plan that best meets your individual needs,” says Herb Fritch, president

cial goals you value most.
To help you choose a plan and get the most from it, consider these five tips:
2. Be sure your plan offers comprehensive preventive care benefits and use them. Many health plans offer preventive health benefits at little or no cost.
1. Make a list of your priorities and use it to compare plans. Focusing
As AEP approaches, the old adage “good health is priceless” remains true.
3. Know your network. Many plans offer choices with a network of doctors.
According to a survey by Cigna, a leading health service company and Medicare insurance provider, health, well-being and financial security are strongly linked in the minds of Americans. Their research shows that many people have anxiety about their financial health that goes far beyond making health care benefit choices. That’s why it’s crucial Medicare consumers consider their health and budget needs as they evaluate health care options for 2016.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 100,000 lives could be saved each year if everyone received the recommended preventive care.
Choosing primary care doctors and specialists in network can provide better communication and care coordination, and keep your out-ofpocket costs down. 4. Get rewarded for staying active. Keeping fit is essential to healthy aging. of Cigna-HealthSpring, Cigna’s seniors business unit.

Local and state agencies on aging also connect older adults and caregivers with community resources. Your plan may offer newsletters with helpful information about your benefits. Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation, That Looked After Geeta, Turns Down PM Modi’s Rs 1 Cr Donation
(Continued From Page 01) Pakistan’s charity foundation Edhi today turned down Rs one crore donation announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking care of deaf and mute Indian girl Geeta during her over a decade-long stay in the country. Prominent philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, who is the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation, thanked Prime Minister Modi for announcing the donation, but declined to accept it for his charity. “Abdul Sattar Edhi has thanked Modi and politely declined to accept his announced financial help,” Edhi Foundation Spokesman Anwar Kazmi was quoted as saying by the Dawn. Prime Minister Modi yesterday met Geeta, who returned to India to an emotional welcome, and hailed Karachi-based Edhi family for taking care of her with love and affection for so many years.
Complimenting Sattar Edhi’s wife Bilqis Bano for taking care of Geeta with love and affection, the Prime Minister announced that India would give the Edhi Foundation Rs one crore as a token of appreciation, not just for taking care of Geeta, but also for the wonderful work that the Foundation has been doing. “What the Edhi family has done is too priceless to be measured but I am happy to announce a contribution of Rs 1 crore to their foundation,” Modi had said. Geeta was reportedly just 7 or 8 years old when she was found sitting alone on the Samjhauta Express by the Pakistan Rangers 15
years ago at the Lahore railway station. She was adopted by the Edhi Foundation’s Bilquees Edhi and lived with her in Karachi. Bilquis and her grandchildren, Saba and Saad Edhi, are accompanying Geeta to India. Geeta yesterday returned to New Delhi but failed to recognise a family which she had initially identified from photographs. She refused to recognise the Mahato couple from Bihar which she had identified from photographs and added that she will be kept in an institution in Indore till her “real family” was found.

How To Enjoy Football Season Like A Pro
Fall is a time of transition. The leaves turn rich hues of auburn and brown, while the faces of football fans turn turquoise, orange, blue, purple, yellow and -- well, you get the picture. From pee-wee to professional, from pep bands to pep talks, no sport captures our nation’s imagination quite like football. Here’s a quick guide on how to enjoy this season like a pro. Tail-Greater The first thing you need to remember when tailgating -- it’s a mindset, not a parking lot. Can’t make it to the game? As long as you have food, friends and fandom, anywhere can be a pre-game tailgate. No matter where you are, it’s important to drink responsibly. Here’s a simple solution -- make tasty drinks that you’ll want to savor

Small, easy to prepare appetizers can make parties a snap. Called “small plates” on restaurant menus, flavorful Mediterranean-inspired appetizers are simple and tasty combinations of bold flavors. Here are some savory tips to make beautiful, no-fuss holiday party fare:
Use slices as a base to emulate trendy restaurants and cafes that serve “toasts” topped with flavorful combinations. In a pinch? Crackers work great too. • Go nuts: Combinations of crunchy pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and cashews are delicious with everything. Hundreds of miles away in CNN’s bureau in New Delhi, bureau chief Ravi Agrawal felt tremors.
But unlike the quake 10 years ago, this one happened deep inside the Earth, some 223 kilometers (139 miles) below the surface. Earthquakes at this depth typically cause less damage on the surface than shallower quakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter of the earthquake, near the Afghan city of Jarm, is a rural and sparsely populated area. Many people in this region live in mud brick buildings prone to collapsing. “We could feel a fair bit of shaking,” he said. “We could see tables shaking a little bit; the TVs on the wall were shaking a little bit.” “The last earthquake that brought shakes as bad as that was the Nepal earthquake,” Agrawal said. India’s government expressed willingness to help. “I have asked for an urgent assessment and we stand ready for assistance where required, including Afghanistan & Pakistan,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet. The earthquake was felt all the way to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz political activist Edil Baisalov said the shaking was “not unusual for us but quite long tremors. As far as I know no damage in Kyrgyzstan.” Sophia Saifi reported from Islamabad, Pakistan; Masoud Popalzai reported from Kabul, Afghanistan; and Mariano Castillo wrote the story in Atlanta.
Afghan broadcaster Tolo TV showed images of collapsed structures. Photos showed collapsed houses and buildings turned to rubble. According to Wais Ahmad Barmak, Afghan state minister for disaster management affairs, about 4,000 houses were either severely damaged or destroyed. The USGS issued an orange alert on the quake. “Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread.

Afghanistan-Pakistan earthquake leaves hundreds dead More than 260 people have died, mostly in Pakistan, after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit north-east-
ern Afghanistan.
Tremors from the quake were also felt in northern India and Tajikistan. At least 12 of the victims were Afghan schoolgirls killed in a crush as they tried to get out of their building. The earthquake was centred in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, 76km (45 miles) south of Faizabad, the US Geological Survey reported. The death toll is set to rise as the most severely affected areas are very remote and communications have been cut off. In Pakistan, the death toll has risen to at least 214, in the northern mountainous areas. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone, authorities said at least 179 people were known to have died, and more than 1,800 were injured. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is cutting short a visit abroad and returning home. Sunnatullah Timour, a spokesman for the governor of the Afghan province of Takhar, told the BBC that as well as the fatalities at the girls’ school, another 25 students were injured in the stampede. Deaths and injuries have also been reported in the Afghan provinces of Nangarhar, Badakhshan and Kunar, with at least 52 killed in total. Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah tweeted that the government had asked aid agencies to work with it to help those in need. However as the earthquake originated more than 200km (125 miles) below the earth’s surface, the damage is less than that which a similarly powerful but shallow tremor might cause. In the city of Karimabad, in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan, a witness who gave his name as Anas told the BBC that the quake had sent a landslide crashing into the Hunza river. (Continued On Page 15)

Tirumala Has 4.5 Tonnes Of Gold In Banks, Gets 80Kg As Yearly Interest The veil has been lifted, albeit partially, on one of the best kept secrets in the country: How rich is Tirumala Temple’s Lord Venkateswara?

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials indicated on Friday that 4.5 tonnes of gold have been deposited in banks and that the temple administration is in the process of depositing one more ton of the yellow metal in the State Bank of India soon.
They come in the form of various gold ornaments as well as biscuits. TTD began depositing gold in 2010. Since then, on maturity of the gold deposits, the temple administration converts the interest amount too into gold which is then added to the pile already there with the banks. According to the temple authorities, the 4.5 tonnes of gold already in the banks fetch an interest of 80kg of pure gold every year.
Calculated at today’s rates, the total cost of the 5,500 kg ‘disclosed’ gold with the TTD stands at Rs 1,320 crore. Temple insiders say that this could just be a partial estimate of the total wealth of what is regarded as the richest temple of the country. However, in July 2014 a contender emerged in the form of the Padmanabha Swami Temple in Thiruvananthapuram where an inventory revealed that its total wealth stood at Rs 1 lakh crore.

Ways To Give Back This Holiday Season
When making this year’s holiday gift list, consider how you might also give back to your local community. The holiday season is the perfect time of year to do this, when volunteer and donation opportunities increase. Here are a few ideas to give back in your community:

Volunteer Your Time
One-hundred percent of all proceeds go to support local children and literacy programs. Your donations go even further thanks to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which is able to purchase books at a deep discount. To find a participating location near you and make a donation that will help ensure families everywhere have access to books, visit theupsstore.
When you’re busy making trays of cookies for your big holiday party, consider making an extra batch or two, and encouraging friends and neighbors to do the same. With your combined efforts, you can host a bake sale, which can be a lucrative and enjoyable way to raise money for your favorite charity.
One of the best ways to give back is by donating your valuable time. Make a trip to a local nursing home and spend time with residents who may not have family or anyone else to visit them this season. Additionally, soup kitchens are often in need of extra hands during the holidays. Ask your local organizations about volunteer opportunities.
If you don’t have time to organize an event like this, you can still give back through your baking. Wrap packs of cookies or other goodies in bags as thank you gifts to your children’s teachers, coaches and others in your community who have served or been kind to your
While holiday wish lists are often full of fun gadgets, clothes and toys, there are still many in your community lacking more basic necessities. This season, think beyond your personal wants and do your best to give back. (statepoint)

UNDER THE BANYAN SYNOPSIS
A story teller Lights a lamp at the foot of a Great Banyan Tree by a temple. In it’s radiant glow he weaves masterful legends of Gods and Demons. Love and Separation, Joy and Grief. With deep roots, wide spread branches and refreshing shade, The Banyan cradles his creativity. His stories are fleeting– created in the moment Only to disappear at the next. But not before they leave lasting impressions. The story teller symbolizes the artist and creator. With deeply rooted faith, boundless imagination and nurturing awareness, the Banyan tree becomes a metaphor for his creative mind. In this deeply personal space, sparks from the world around him sprout and grow into magical visions that engage, enchant and enrapture as they emerge from Under the Banyan. The show will be of two hour duration with 10 minutes intermission. It will consist of seven
scenes with Scene 1 (prise of Lord Shiva): Scene 2 (Maya); Scene 3 (Pratheeksha); Scene 4 ( Yaathra); Scene 5 ( Meghadootam); Scene 6 (Punassamaagamam) and Scene 7 (Moksha). The show involves beautiful backdrops and wonderful lighting. It will include portions of the previous productions Krishna and Meghadootam. If you did not see them , please don’t miss this one.
Sachin Tendulkar has begun practising for Cricket All-Stars series, a venture he is co-promoting with Shane Warne and which is scheduled to be held in November in USA. On the sidelines of his training session, he spoke to the media about a host of topics. Excerpts. How was it to bat and train properly after a long time? Good fun. I am pacing myself. It’s not that I can come back after two years and start doing everything at one go. The last 10 days or so I have been practicing a bit and pacing myself, Before that I started training a little bit to get back in better (physical) shape. After retirement, things were obviously slightly different, I could eat whatever I wanted to, before that I had to think twice but not anymore. For this tournament, I wanted to lose some weight, so I had to check my diet. It’s fine. We are all retired cricketers, we want to enjoy, we want to promote cricket. We want to get competitive as much as we can be, as much as the body allows
us to be. So it’s about having fun, getting our fans closer to us, giving them an opportunity to watch live cricket, get more engaged with cricket. Did you feel emotional when you wore those pads again? I am wearing the same leg guard I wore in my last innings at Wankhede. As and when I get close to my kit bag I remember all those things. Obviously, these are special leg guards to me, the thigh guards, the whole kit is special to me. It’s a nice (feeling). How is it been interacting again with greats like Shane Warne? There is a lot of excitement because I am going to get to meet them again. Last year, we met at Lord’s and had an amazing time. It was good fun in the dressing room as well. Post match also, there was a cocktail party in the Long Room at Lord’s where I got to meet a lot of players who were actually not playing that game but they were much very there to watch us play. Overall, it was a humbling experi-

SACHIN ON ALL STAR CRICKET
ence when you meet so many players and discuss cricket. I realised then that even though we have retired the passion for cricket is very much alive and that sort of spurred me in this direction and start Cricket All Stars. There might be a chance that you might open with Sourav Ganguly, how does that feel?
We haven’t selected our teams but there is a new surprise, Virender Sehwag is also a part of the squad now. It would be nice. Whether it’s Hayden, Ganguly or Sehwag, whoever, they are all top players and we all are looking forward to it and so is Viru and that is what he told me. It’s good for people in America because when they get to know about this, they would be excited. Who doesn’t want to see Sehwag? Is there anyone among the All Stars players whom you always wanted to bat with? We have a system for selection
which you will know shortly. I have batted with Ricky Ponting, and obviously, with Sehwag and Ganguly. With Brian Lara I have batted with in a couple of exhibition games. Matthew Hayden is someone I have not batted with, Michael Vaughan I haven’t, VVS Laxman I have, Sangakkara and Jayawardene I haven’t, and to bat along side them would also be an experience. They both have been playing literally till last two months and so, both are in terrific shape and hitting the ball very well.. How you feel playing cricket again two years after retirement? When you play for India, your preparation is quite different. The format that we are playing of three matches each, we will be playing three matches this time and after three-four months we will again play three matches. When you play for India, you don’t get a break like this, and you have to maintain your fitness at a certain level and you also have to play at a certain level. (Source: Indian Express)

When Sibling Rivalry Goes Too Far: Dealing With Sibling Bullying
Bullying outside the home makes headlines daily, but sibling bullying can happen under one’s own roof, and can be misperceived as normal, say experts. “Sibling rivalry and sibling abuse are two separate things,” says Pam Franklin, author of “My Five Sisters,” a memoir of the author’s challenging childhood. “Mental health issues are both at the root of these problems, and can also perpetuate them.”
should be addressed. Observe your children and ask other responsible parties, such as babysitters and relatives, for feedback on what they’ve seen or heard. • Keep in mind that many children

• Some mental health disorders are much more common than DID and can also have larger ramifications. In fact, 10 percent of the population today takes antidepressants and many more have undiagnosed issues.
Franklin, who was psychologically and physically abused by her mentally ill older sister, has turned her story into a unique exploration of how dangerous sibling abuse can become if not addressed. She feels her story could help others and is offering insights to those attempting to identify whether behaviors they have witnessed are normal or problematic: • While all siblings are inclined to bicker or compete, a supreme imbalance of power that threatens the mental or physical safety of a particular child is not acceptable and
