VOTE 2020

By Seems Govil As many of you know, the 2020 election is the most critical elec-

tion of our lifetimes, given that so much is at stake for South Asians not just in Austin, but across Texas and the country. Many issues are on the line, both of values and policy: the steady, scientifically based management

of the Covid pandemic and our healthcare infrastructure, getting our economy back on its feet by creating sustainable jobs that will last into the coming decades and encourage small and medium enterprises, an immigrant policy that is fair and works for all in our community, the global climate crisis (which in the US is reflected in the hurricanes and flooding in the Southeast, with fires burning hundreds and thousands of acres in the West coast), (Continued On Page 12)

How To Choose The Right Personal Loan When it comes to selecting a personal loan, making the right choice is essential, particularly when you’re in a tight financial spot or have imperfect credit and fewer options.

Loan Types There are dozens of personal loan

“It’s important to understand the type of loan you’re getting and the impact it can have on your long-term financial story,” says Chad Prashad, president and CEO of World Finance, a people-focused company providing personal installment loan solutions and personal tax preparation and filing services.

variations out there, but for borrowers with no credit or imperfect credit, there are three basic types to know.

Serving millions of customers nationwide, World Finance helped more than 225,000 customers raise their credit score out of subprime and deep subprime in the last year, and is offering the following insights into obtaining a loan prudently.

• Pay day loans are typically for smaller amounts of money to be paid back in a lump sum on the next pay day. Customers are often required to provide a post-dated check for the loan amount that the lender can automatically cash. While lenders don’t consider a bor-

rower’s overall financial picture or ability to repay the loan, making them easy to acquire, these loans are notorious for having extremely high interest rates. P l u s , y o u r credit won’t be improved w i t h timely repayment. • Title loans offer higher loan amounts and the length of repayment periods vary. Obtained by posting an important asset (i.e. car title, mortgage) as collateral, you risk losing the asset and more if you can’t repay the loan and its high interest rates (usually well over 100 percent). Like with pay day loans, your credit won’t be improved with timely repayment.

• Personal installment loans let you borrow a set amount of money (usually $500-$5,000) and then pay it back in equal monthly installments over the life of the loan (typically four to 46 months) with accumulating interest. Installment lenders work with borrowers to figure out the best monthly payment amount so that borrowers have enough funds left to cover essential monthly expenses. These loans typically come with lower interest rates, and, because the lender reports payment behavior to credit bureaus, also offer the opportunity to build credit and long-term financial stability. To learn more about installment loans versus pay day and title loans, visit LoansbyWorld.com. Next Steps Before applying for any loan, read the fine print for interest rate, fees or prepayment penalty details. A bit of research can also clue you into whether you’re dealing with a

reputable lender. Reputable lenders will have a phone number and legitimate physical address that can be verified on Google and the Better Business Bureau. All lenders and brokers are required to register in the states where they conduct business, so look for a state license. Beyond these basics, prioritize a track record of honesty and customer success. Talk to trusted friends or colleagues who’ve been through the lending process. Lastly watch out for red flags -- reputable lenders will never call or email you out of the blue with offers. Free educational tools on financial subjects are offered by World Finance. To learn more and take the American Financial Services Association’s MoneySKILL online course, visit LoansbyWorld.com/ education. “While acquiring a loan can be stressful, being able to turn obstacles into opportunities should be the cornerstone of any financial decision,” says Prashad. How To Reduce Your Recovery Time After A Tough Workout More Americans are investing their time and energy in the pursuit of fitness these days, with the percentage of people belonging to gyms and health clubs nearly doubling from 2000-2017, according to Statista. Beyond casual workouts, participation in extreme sports and endurance events has grown exponentially in the past 25 years. Whether you’ve recently started exercising, are ramping up your efforts or have always been an avid sports enthusiast, you’ve probably dealt with soreness and fatigue after a tough workout. While rest days are critical for athletes and exercisers of all levels, no one wants to be sidelined for too long and lose their momentum. To turbocharge your recovery process and get back into the game faster, consider these techniques: • Complete a dynamic warm-up: Before physical activity, perform a dynamic warmup to wake up muscles and get oxygen and blood flowing. Take your body through its full range of motion with effective moves, including high knees, butt kicks, forward and sideways leg swings and shoulder rolls.

• Consider CBD: With a similar molecular structure to the naturally occurring endocannabinoids produced by the human body, cannabidiol (CBD) sports supplements can assist with your preparation, performance and recovery, according to research.

Gregor, an Icelandic strongman, deadlift world record holder, and “Game of Thrones” actor, rock climbers, Adam Ondra and Tommy Caldwell, CrossFit athletes, Sara Sigmundsdóttir and Pat Vellner, and Jay Glazer, football insider and MMA trainer. “There is a big difference between just taking the day off and consciously recovering,” says Sonny Mottahed, founder and CEO of Champions + Legends. “Better recovery means you can train harder next time.” To learn more, visit ChampionsandLegends.com.

Check out the hemp-derived, custom-formulated supplements from Champions + Legends, which offers a portfolio of products used by some of the world’s most elite athletes to help keep them training, performing and recovering at a high level, including James Harrison, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Hafþór “Thor” Júlíus Björnsson

• Know your limits: While strength and endurance gains can only happen if you push your limits, it’s important to remember that improving athletic performance is a gradual process. Be mindful of your current strength, endurance and flexibility and learn to distinguish between normal soreness and discomfort, and pain that could be a sign it’s time to slow down or take

a break. • Cross-train: The same type of exercise day in and day out can make you more susceptible to physical and mental burnout. Crosstraining will not only give you an edge in your main sport, it can also help you recover faster. • Foam roll: You don’t need a big budget or much time to receive the positive benefits of a deep tissue massage. Give yourself the spa treatment at home. Post workout, foam roll to reduce tension of large muscle groups and targeted areas. The harder the foam roller’s density, the deeper into muscle tissue you can go. You may find it helpful to have multiple rollers to choose from, depending on the muscle area and your level of soreness that day. • Refuel rapidly: Good nutrition is essential for swift recovery. Be sure to refuel quickly after tough workouts to aid muscle repair. You only have one body, so treat it well. Seek out the tools and knowledge you need to fully recover, faster. (StatePoint)

3 Tips To Prepare For Turkey Hunting Season Want to hunt turkeys on your home turf this fall? You’ll need to create and manage a habitat that will attract them to your property first.

keys won’t come out in a food plot with high grass because they don’t want to get wet,” says Waddell. “You need to keep in mind turkey legs are only so tall and they get their feathers all wet, and it’s just aggravating to them.”

To get started, consider these tried-and-true tips from farmer, professional hunter and creator of the “Bone Collector” series, Michael Waddell:

Mow your plots and you improve your chances of turkeys using them.

• Your lawn mower can help. Yes, believe it or not, mowing the pastures or food plots where you plan to hunt makes a huge difference.

• But, don’t mow everything. Turkeys use tall grass during the day once the dew has evaporated, so you don’t want to mow your entire lawn too low.

“What you’ll find, is that right at daylight with a heavy dew on the ground, the tur-

• Plan a Drive-by Birthday Parade:

Tell friends and family what time to drive by, encouraging participants to use signs, music, balloons and banners to make a splash. • Request Cards: Make a secret request to friends and family asking them to send cards in the mail. Kids love receiving mail, especially on their birth-

What better way to honor a special occasion than by seeing everyone you love?

Waddell suggests mowing around the edges where you want to concentrate your turkeys, and then creating some lanes through the grass to create a “turkey funnel,” so to speak.

• Host a Virtual Party:

These days, drive-by celebration parades are all the rage for graduations, birthdays and more -- and this is for good reason.

Keeping some of the grass high allows the poults and hens to come out and eat bugs while still having shelter from other predators like hawks.

• Look beyond premiums: While reviewing your options, look at the multiple factors which can affect your overall costs over the course of the year.

For example, you may find that right now, your top priority is the safety and convenience of home delivery of prescriptions drugs in order to reduce your chances of exposure to coronavirus.

While a lower premium might save you money upfront, these plans can have much higher copayments, which over time can add up.

For all these reasons, doing your homework is not only important, it has the power to substantially reduce your out-of-pocket costs. “Reviewing your Medicare Part D options is the best way to ensure your prescription needs are met affordably in the coming year,” says Kelle Turner, Express Scripts Medicare Part D expert. “COVID-19 has highlighted how having the right coverage is critical to helping you stay safe and healthy.” To help those turning 65 and older make sense of their options, Turner offers the following tips:

How Cool Tech Can Inspire Your Child

Many kids gravitate toward technology, leaving parents looking for ways to introduce it to them in a safe, age-appropriate way. Here are three examples of how kids can turn

to their gadgets and gear to inspire their creative side, build new skills and even get outdoors and on the move: • Make a Movie: Budding creators and cinematographers can sharpen their technical skills and become content creators using the new KidiZoom Creator Cam digital camera from VTech. This high-definition video camera kit features a green screen and over 20 animated backgrounds that let kids pretend to get chased by

a T-Rex, go to outer space or even disappear. Setting up the shot with the tabletop tripod (which turns into a selfie stick) and using the built-in microphone, kid creators can capture great footage, then use the easy, onscreen editing tools to add intros and music or produce trick shots and time-lapse video. With safety in mind, there is no built-in WiFi, giving parents control over how kids share their content. After a masterpiece is complete, at parent’s discretion, the video can be uploaded and shared with friends and family via the included USB cable. • Write a Story: Does your child love to tell or write stories? A host of apps designed for kids at various ages and stages can help them hone their craft and share their literary works. Some offer pictorial writing prompts, giving kids ideas of what to write about next. Other apps serve as publishing tools, allowing kids to transform their work into eBooks to be shared.

• Capture the Action: Wearable tech is great for kids on the move. Whether they are leaping, running, biking or engaged in the device’s built-in active play challenges, they can capture the action using the two cameras of the Smartwatch DX2, and then customize the photos and footage using the device’s Silly Me app.

Both kids and parents will enjoy everything this innovative, safe smartwatch has to offer. Expanding your child’s creative skills and interests is easier than ever these days thanks to kid-friendly technology offering new creative outlets and inspiration. (StatePoint)

What Every Chronic Pain Sufferer Needs To Know

According to a new survey from Boston Scientific of more than 500 people with chronic pain, 60 percent aren’t satisfied with their current treatment or therapies. Professional golfer Grant Waite can relate.

One of the most common reasons that adults seek medical care, chronic pain has been linked to restrictions in mobility and daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety and depression, and reduced quality of life.

Waite sought help from a pain management specialist – a doctor specially trained to address acute and chronic pain. That’s when he learned about spinal cord stimulation (SCS).

Repetitive, rotational movements make golf incredibly stressful on the back. Waite tried multiple surgeries, which didn’t provide relief, and he said he couldn’t function while taking prescription medications.

According to the CDC, more than 50 million chronic pain sufferers nationwide are struggling with pain that lasts for six months or longer without finding relief.

Initially, Waite didn’t know much about this treatment, but after completing his trial and full implantation with the Boston Scientific Spectra WaveWriter SCS System, he champions it. “Before SCS, my pain forced me to give up my active lifestyle, which was hard. Now there are very few limitations on what I can do,” says Waite, who is back to playing golf, working out, and even hiking and traveling with his family.

Twelve years ago, the pain in his back was so debilitating he could barely get out of bed, let alone play professional golf or spend time with his family. “Pain is debilitating not just physically, but mentally and emotionally because there’s no escaping it. When you’re in pain, it’s just difficult to function.”

Patients undergo a trial period, allowing them to evaluate and adjust the pain relief delivered before deciding to receive a permanent implant.

Unfortunately, less than half of those surveyed are aware of drugfree, minimally-invasive, interventional therapies helping patients such as Waite return to activities they love and regain hope for their future.

SCS is an FDA-approved implanted medical device that interrupts pain signals from reaching the brain. Unlike some surgical procedures, it can be personalized to an individual’s needs and is reversible.

“The experience of chronic pain is complex and unique to every person. But pain management specialists have many tools in our arsenal that can provide adequate, lasting, personalized pain relief,” says Dr. Steve Pyles, a pain specialist and founder of the Pain Treatment Centers in Florida. The new survey found that 94 percent of chronic pain sufferers would try an FDA-approved,

drug-free alternative to help manage chronic pain, but less than half have ever seen a pain specialist. Dr. Pyles notes that for patients with chronic pain in the lower back, legs and feet, SCS offers a personalized experience that can treat multiple pain areas simultaneously. For those suffering from moderate lumbar spinal stenosis, interspinous spacers may relieve pain and discomfort in the lower back, legs, groin and buttocks. Alternatively, radiofrequency ablation delivers a small current to interrupt pain signals at the source. To find a local pain management specialist and learn more about chronic pain, visit www.pain.com, an educational site from Boston Scientific. You can also take a pain assessment quiz and connect with other patients. Life with chronic pain can be allencompassing. However, experts say that non-drug therapies are providing tangible relief to patients. (StatePoint)

Tips To Ease The Financial Recovery Process After A Disaster While the COVID-19 crisis continues to be top of mind for many Americans, it’s important to remember that other disasters can still occur with little or no warning, making it vital to prepare.

This September, which is National Preparedness Month, get started by checking out Ready.gov and the American Red Cross, two great resources for creating a plan to protect you and your family’s immediate safety. As for your financial preparedness, consider these tips from Wells Fargo: • A natural disaster could potentially destroy paper copies of documents needed for tax and insurance purposes. While you should protect these documents in a fireproof, waterproof box that locks, you

tificates, wills, deeds, tax returns, insurance policies and stock and bond certificates on a thumb drive or in a secure location in the cloud. • Keep an up-to-date inventory of your possessions. One easy way to do so is to use your smartphone to take photographs or videos of

everything valuable and store this in the cloud. Your documentation should include cars, v e hicles a n d electronics, as well as any interior and exterior home improvements you’ve made which could increase your property value and help with insurance claims. • Review what your insurance policy covers and determine if additional insurance or coverage is needed. Be sure to take into account how life has changed in

the COVID-19 era. For example, emergency shelters may not be an option for your family given social distancing guidelines, so you may want to consider adding coverage for temporary housing to your policy. • If you haven’t already done so, consider setting up online banking, mobile banking, automatic bill pay and electronic account alerts. Should you be displaced from your home, these measures will make it easier to stay on top of your accounts and bills. Take this opportunity to ensure your online profiles are up-to-date in case your bank or lender need to contact you postdisaster. • Note that a disaster can shut down local ATMs and banks for days or even weeks. Include easily accessible cash in your emergency sup-

ply kit. • Know in advance if and what resources your financial institutions provide. For example Wells Fargo customers, including those with home mortgages, home equity, small business, and auto loans, can contact 800-TO-WELLS or visit wellsfargo.com/recovery to learn more. “If COVID-19 has taught us anything it’s that disasters come in all shapes and sizes,” says Rullah Price, senior vice president, head of Wells Fargo Enterprise Incident Communications. “However, developing a plan this National Preparedness Month could save you countless hours of work and make the financial recovery process a lot less stressful.” (StatePoint)

What To Know About Today’s Life Insurance Options

“While COVID-19 has recently put the spotlight on the need for life insurance, it should always be regarded as a significant financial planning tool for families,” says Mike Burns, senior vice president of Life Solutions for Lincoln Financial Group.

3. You can get covered online: The end-to-end digital purchasing process of life insurance today will likely appeal to many younger consumers -- 40 percent of millennials surveyed said they would be more likely to purchase life insurance if they could do so electronically. Such options do exist, with some policies issued electronically within 24 hours. Many people also have the option to select additional life insurance as part of their employer-sponsored benefits during their annual open enrollment.

According to Burns, the survey highlights specific knowledge gaps around life insurance. To that end, he says that consumers should think about the following things as they weigh their options: 1. Life insurance can offer broad benefits: According to the survey, the primary reasons people buy life insurance are to cover final expenses and replace lost income for the family if they pass away. However, today’s life insurance can extend well beyond standard death benefit protection. Many types of policies also provide “living benefits,” that can be used to provide supplemental retirement income, cover long-term care expenses or protect a business, among other financial planning needs. The survey found that these types of benefits are very appealing to consumers, with 45 percent of respondents say-

At a time when many Americans are facing uncertainty, it’s no surprise that a financial tool which helps families protect and pass on their assets is in the spotlight. A financial professional or workplace benefits specialist can help individuals determine what policy option best addresses their needs and circumstances. (StatePoint)

Austin Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

By Sumaiya Malik

National Hispanic Heritage Month

which started September 15 still has two more weeks into October. During this month we formally and completely recognize and celebrate the contributions, cultures, and resilience of our Hispanic, Latinx and Latinoidentified

community members. National Hispanic Heritage Month, first proclaimed as a month of commemoration in 1989, has its origins in National Hispanic Heritage week. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Día de la Raza, which is October

12, also falls within this 30-day period. In 2019 the U.S. Hispanic population reached a record high of 60.6 million, up by nearly a million from the previous year according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. In fact, in the last decade, the Latinx share of the country’s total population increased 2 percent from 16 percent to 18 percent, accounting for more than 50 percent of all U.S. population growth. They’re now the country’s second largest racial or ethnic group, following white non-Hispanics. (thehill.com)

Waiting Turns To Hope In “Intezaar” At Harlem Film Festival By Sumaiya Malik @sumaiyasaidthis

Right from the beginning, Intezaar gives the audience a sense of waiting.

He is of the view that cancer can be allayed by feeding fish some bread.

Screenplay is by Bee Gul. Samo makes a guest appearance as a physician and the audience gets to see once again what a convincing actor she is. Acting is par excellence of each character.

Abu is waiting for death. Ami is dying of cancer. Ruby is waiting for Ami to die so she can continue with her plans of visiting her son, and all three are waiting for Sameer, Ruby’s brother who lives in the US where he works and sends them expense money. Life is far from being at a dead stop even though they all feel stuck. “Intezaar,” a debut feature film directed, and produced by veteran Pakistani actor Sakina Samo, reveals the voice of the director portraying the insecurities of an elderly couple in a lonely house. The story revolves around a divorced daughter Ruby (Kaif Ghaznavi) and her parents (Samina Ahmed and Khalid Ahmed) who live comfortably in Karachi, Pakistan. Ruby hires a day help for her aging parents. The helper is a kind-heart-

The story moves slowly from the family members being upset with each other to becoming more accommodating with little cues from the hired help who slowly begins to find a place of acceptance. Little anecdotes between the parents to lighten the mood of seriousness of past life move the story slowly forward until one fine day Sameer, the brother arrives from the US. His practical nature and good intentions do mellow the family’s view of him, but he has been gone far too long to appreciate how his parents are finally in love with each other or that his sister needs more than a sense of direction. The cast of the film includes actors such as Samina Ahmed, Khalid Ahmed, Kaif Ghaznavi, Raza Ali

According to Samaa TV, legendary actor Khalid Ahmed bagged the Best Actor award at the Harlem International Film Festival this month in New York City for his recent performance in Sakina Samo’s feature film Intezaar. The film is a must watch for a mature audience who take life as a real subject and learn from all that come their way. Truly an intellectual watch reflective of Sakina Samo and the high caliber she is capable of delivering. Samo received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for her services to the Pakistani entertainment industry in 2011.

Families are yet again facing the challenge of ensuring children’s online usage is balanced, healthy, and safe.

Excessive online usage can also increase exposure to cyberbullying, and ultimately lead to other mental health issues, like anxiety and depression.

Here are a few of the issues around increased screen time:

Despite these new challenges, there are many steps parents can take to help kids strike a healthy balance with their screen time for a happier, more successful school year:

• Disrupted sleep:

• Set a schedule:

According to the National Sleep Foundation, blue light emitted from electronic devices disrupts quality shuteye, as it can delay the release of melatonin, a natural sleep hormone.

A typical school day includes natural breaks. Families can recreate this at home with scheduled time for kids to walk around, stretch, and get fresh air between assignments.

Over time, compromised sleep can create a number of physical and mental health concerns. • Safety threats: With kids online more hours a day and less supervised than they would be during a typical school day, online predators have taken

“With millions of Americans working and learning from home amid COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to take a few simple steps to protect your home and loved ones from electrical fires,” says Ashley Bryant, National Electrical Manufacturers Association Low Voltage Distribution Equipment AFCI Task Force co-chair.

(Continued From Page 01) Theoretically, there are four seasonal Navaratri. However, in practice, it is the postmonsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navaratri that is the most observed in the honor of the divine feminine Devi (Durga). Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated yearly on 2 October. It is one of the official declared national holidays of India, observed in all of its states and territories. The festival is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October. In the eastern and northeastern states of India, the Durga Puja is synonymous with Navaratri, wherein goddess Durga battles and emerges victorious over the buffalo demon to help restore Dharma. In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymous with “Rama Lila” and Dussehra that celebrates the battle and victory of god Rama over the demon king Ravana. In southern states, the victory of different goddesses, of Rama or Saraswati is celebrated. In all cases, the common theme is the battle and victory of Good over Evil based on a regionally famous epic or legend such as the Ramayana or the Devi Mahatmya.Celebrations include stage decorations, recital of the legend, enacting of the story, and chanting of the scriptures of Hinduism. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture.

To make needed updates at home, consider these safety tips from the NEMA LVDE AFCI Task Force:

On the final day, called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as river and ocean, or alternatively the statue symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil’s destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami or Dussehra or Dashain.

3. Ensure Products Meet Safety Standards: To ensure the products you use at home comply with national safety standards, always look for the label of a nationally-

1. Take Care with Cords: Inspect cords regularly for signs of damage or wear and tear. Use extension cords properly and according to the load ratings for the product. Never overload them or run cords under furniture, carpets or rugs. 2. Examine Appliances: When using appliances, inspect them for signs of damage. Only use the appliance in its intended manner.

However, you can help prevent this dangerous condition from leading to a worst case scenario with ArcFault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs). AFCIs are designed to monitor the circuit for the presence of “normal” and “dangerous” arcing conditions in order to reduce the chance of your electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. An affordable, proven smart technology that provides a higher level of protection than standard circuit breakers, AFCIs have been a National Electrical Code requirement in new home building since 1999 for certain electrical circuits. To better protect your entire home, experts recommend requesting AFCI protection on all 15 and 20A branch circuits. To learn more about electrical fire prevention and AFCI technology, visit afcisafety.org. Electrical fires can be devastating and lethal. Fortunately, there are simple proactive steps every household can take that can help stop an electrical fire before it starts. (StatePoint)

Many families now have to make multiple important decisions with the potential to impact their personal and financial situation.

1. Species identification: Before the trip, research the different plant and animal species you will likely encounter and what role each one plays in the ecosystem. From birds to bugs to shrubs, keep a checklist on hand and have your family identify as many species as they can. 2. After nightfall, find a clearing far away from the bright lights of other campers and enjoy the open sky. Consider bringing along an easyto-pack telescope and star chart. You might even choose to plan your trip around a particular celestial event, such as a meteor shower. 5. New perspectives:

Explain to children how to read each of the watch’s four sensors and the importance of each measurement, then let them take over navigation duty.

From patience, cooperation and resilience, to a deeper appreciation for the natural world, camping offers many intangible lessons to those with an open mind.

Financial advisors, such as Certified Financial Planner professionals, can help you understand and fully evaluate the short- and longterm impacts of your choices in the following areas. • Employment: You may not be thinking about a job change because of your child’s needs, but you may still be worried about the stability of your current position. Should you cut back on your investments or withdraw money from existing funds to boost your cash flow? Should you delay your retirement plans? A CFP professional will help you answer these questions and avoid panic-driven decisions. • Education: With return-to-school plans continuing to change, many parents must decide how their children will learn during the 2020-21 academic year. Some are choosing to leave the workforce, transition to part-time jobs, or freelance so they have the flexibility to support virtual or hy-

Social Media And Kids: What Parents Can Do To Ensure Safe Use The negative effects of social media have been much discussed as of late, thanks to the recently released documentary on Netflix, “The Social Dilemma.” The documentary argues that while platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have at times been used to facilitate social movements and meaningful change, they can also make people more anxious, polarized, and inclined to believe misinformation.

Distance-Learning: What You Need To Succeed At Home

Is your family distance-learning? Having the resources you need at home can be the key to success. Here are a few tools to consider as you navigate an unusual school year:

points, as well as add text labels,

• A Library Card: If students lack access to the school’s physical library, your public library can be an invaluable fount of information to turn to this school year. While it’s true that some library systems have limited their print materials available for checkout, keep in mind that many offer a rich collection of electronic resources, which can be checked out instantaneously from the safety of home. • Math Tools: Math class can be an especially challenging subject for students to tackle in the remote learning context. Luckily, online tools ex-

expressions and pictures to graphs or geometry diagrams. However, for those who prefer a physical graphing calculator, look for a tool that can handle coursework now and in the future. For example, the fx-9750GIII from Casio contains all the features needed to make remote coursework easy

to follow. Finally, students of all grade levels, from kindergarten through college, can learn new mathematical techniques and supplement their studies using free downloadable activities created by teachers. To access these resources, visit casioeducation.com. • A Dedicated Workspace:

If you have multiple people learning and working from home, it doesn’t hurt to have a mobile hotspot on hand in case of Internet outages or other connection snafus. This can help ensure students don’t miss a remote class session or lose their connection when it’s most needed.

While desks used for remote learning may double function as a place for free time journaling and personal projects, drawing a clear mental separation between the school day and personal life is important.

• Smart Planners:

Students can make a few visual swaps to signal when class is in session and it is time to focus on schoolwork. These swaps may include using a particular setting on the desk lamp, clearing away personal objects or tacking up schoolrelated paperwork to a corkboard during the day. • A Hotspot:

Free apps can help students organize their coursework so they never forget an assignment or quiz, as well as offer the tools needed for better time management. Unlike traditional paper planners or calendars, a smart digital planner actually learns the habits of the student in order to tailor push notifications and alerts. As your family once again falls into the groove of distance-learning, a few tools and considerations can help expand everyone’s ability to work from home. (StatePoint)

IPL 2020 In UAE: Why Rahul Tewatia Is An unlikely Hero For Rajasthan Royals Rahul Tewatia’s a hero. An unlikely hero. The kind of hero that only T20 cricket can produce. The Indian Premier League has spawned many heroes over the past 12 seasons. But none like Tewatia. His five sixes in an over, the 18th, turned a looming defeat into a victory for the Rajasthan Royals. A record-breaking victory too, since it came while chasing down the highest total in IPL, set by Kings XI Punjab. An unlikely victory carved out by an unlikely hero. Why’s Tewatia an unlikely hero? For a start, he’s never been a permanent member of any IPL franchise. He’s been traded multiple times and struggled to hold a place in playing XIs. Tewatia’s heroics came with the bat. Not bad for a right-arm leg-spinner, who bats a bit left-handed. Heroics are always forged in the face of adversity. That’s what sport is all about. It’s about surmounting adversities. A victory in sport is a result of overcoming the odds, big or small.

The Haryana lad faced multiple adversities. Send up the order as a pinch-hitter to build on the furious partnership between Royals’ skip-

sixes, Tewatia struggled against the same bowler. At one point, Samson even refused a single. Tewatia’s tortured stay at the wicket also

himself. He knew he could pull it off. All he needed was one good hit, Tewatia said later, adding that the first 20 balls were the worst he faced in his career. Why leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin never came on bowl against Tewatia, after Bishnoi’s success, will be one of the mysteries of the match. Punjab skipper KL Rahul instead chose to bring on Sheldon Cottrell. Why not? It’s the 18th over, and Cottrell is a West Indian left-arm speedster of repute.

per Steve Smith and Sanju Samson, Tewatia struggled to put bat to ball. He was unable to get the ball out of the square. He was sent in to target the Punjab leggies, but Ravi Bishnoi tied him in knots. Ignominy followed. When Samson effortlessly lifted Glen Maxwell for

risked Samson throwing his wicket away in a frustrated attempt to raise the run rate. But Tewatia showed he was a fighter. He refused to surrender. He refused to sacrifice his wicket in the interests of his team. He believed

Call it destiny. Cottrell had to bowl at a time when Tewatia’s confidence had improved with a straight six. He would have taken heart from the timing; the sweet sound of the ball hitting the middle of the bat. The first two balls were swung over square leg, the third went straight and over, and the fourth again over square leg. A dot ball later, Tewatia deposited the last ball over midwicket. Five sixes. Why Cottrell would bowl short of

a length in the death overs is another mystery. Even the pitched-up deliveries sailed over the fence. Maybe, he was destined to be the supporting cast in the theatre of Tewatia. From there, the Royals couldn’t lose. The momentum had shifted inexorably. That was evident when Jofra Archer stormed in to blast sixes off the first two balls he faced. All this drama wouldn’t have happened if it was not for a rollicking second-wicket stand of 81 runs between Smith (50 in 27 balls) and Samson (85 in 42 balls). That was crucial in chasing Punjab’s 223, fashioned by Mayank Agarwal’s brilliant maiden IPL century (107 in 51 balls) and his mammoth 183run partnership with Rahul (69 off 54 balls). Samson’s presence was required to secure a win, and his departure took the wind out of the Royals’ sails. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Tewatia was Royals’ man of the hour.

Last week of September is the start of the fall season. Most of us especially, if you have lived in the east coast when the fall season begins would be little bit of go into gloomy spirit since it is the end of summer and the beginning of getting into winter with jackets, gloves and head gear being out and end of the colorful period as far as outdoor activities is concerned. In fact, some would start wearing dark clothing in preparation for the winter and give up wearing light and colored clothing. But to me fall season also brought out the vivid colors of the nature and personally it is the most colorful season. With the Navaratri round the corner, and Diwali and Christmas it was the season of joy and happiness. To me the change of color in leaves indicated that it was welcoming the season with the wonderful and bright colors and nature was telling us that it is at its most beautiful period of the year and preparing itself for the white blanket of snow which is indicative of peace and calm to one’s mind.

Being in Texas the harsh summer heat is behind us and the warmth of the son with the cool air and mild weather is really a welcome change that I look forward to after the heat. Also for Indians it is the season of Navaratri and Diwali and Christmas all in one so lot of activities with attending Garba, dinner parties and one continuous period of celebration and events. How does one celebrate this season during pandemic? Well one can join an online class for learning the dance steps for the Garba or for the music or even some religious classes to learn some bhajans or chanting. At the same time, this is the time of giving and one can start with small contributions or volunteering. As the saying goes ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted’. So start the season with positivity and with the thought ‘How can I help?’

Like all Baháʼí Houses of Worship, the Lotus Temple is open to all, regardless of religion or any other qualification.

The Lotus Temple has won numerous architectural awards and has been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles. A 2001 CNN report referred to it as the most visited building in the world. The Baháʼí Faith teaches that a Baháʼí House of Worship should be a space for people of all religions to gather, reflect, and worship. Anyone may enter the Lotus Temple irrespective of religious background, sex, or other distinctions, as is the case with all Baháʼí houses of worship. All Baháʼí Houses of Worship, including the Lotus Temple, share certain architectural elements, some of which are specified by Baháʼí scripture. ʻAbdu’l-Bahá, the son of the founder of the religion, stipulated that an essential architectural character of a House of Worship is a nine-sided circular shape. The architect was an Iranian, Fariborz Sahba who now lives in La Jolla, California, after living some years in Canada. He was approached in 1976 to design the Lotus Temple and later oversaw its construction. The structural design was undertaken by the UK firm Flint and Neill over the course of 18 months, and the construction was done by ECC Construction Group of Larsen & Toubro Limited at a cost of $10 million. The major part of the funds needed to buy this land was donated by Ardishír Rustampúr of Hyderabad, Sindh, who gave his entire life savings for this purpose in 1953. A portion of the construction budget was saved and used to build a greenhouse to study indigenous plants and flowers that would be appropriate for use on the site. Of the temple’s total electricity use of 500 kilowatts (kW), 120 kW is provided by solar power generated by solar panels on the building. This saves the temple 120,000 rupees per month. It is the first temple in Delhi to use solar power.

AKBAR AND BIRBAL STORIES

The Daring Culprit

“I have a problem to share and want a solution right away,” Akbar announced in his court one day. “Last evening, someone dared pull a hair from my mustache. What punishment should the person be given?” There was murmuring in the court. “He should be flogged!” came the reply from the prime minister. “No, he should be banished from the kingdom!” exclaimed the treasury minister. There were demands for the maximum punishment for the culprit. Amidst all the noise, Birbal stayed silent. “Don’t you have anything to say, Birbal?” asked Akbar. “Jahanpanah. I recommend you to give the

culprit some sweets.”

There was silence in the court. The courtiers were astounded by Birbal’s reply. “I am surprised, Birbal. How do you expect me to reward someone who dared to pull my mustache?” asked Akbar. “Your majesty, the only person who can dare to touch your mustache is your grandson. I am pretty sure you will not mind giving him sweets,” replied Birbal with a smile.
