Modi-Biden Bilateral Talks: U.S.-India Ties Can Help In Solving A Lot Of Global Challenges, Says Biden U.S. President Joe Biden said Sept. 24 that ties between the U.S. and India can help in solving “a lot of global challenges.” In his opening remarks as he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office at the White House for bilateral talks, Biden recalled that in 2006, when he was the U.S. vice president, he had said that India and the U.S. will be among the closest nations in the world in 2020. “I have long believed that the U.S.-India relationship can help us solve a lot of global challenges. Tips To Ease The Stress Of Relocating To A New Area
Approximately 35 million Americans move every year. But unlike most times when homeowners largely change addresses within the same city or county, 2020 saw a sharp increase in relocations between 50 to 500 miles away. “The pandemic has opened the eyes to many that they can effectively work remotely. Thus, homeowners are leaving pricy or coldweather areas for warmer and more affordable regions, such as our community in Georgia where the cost of living and weather is more appealing,” says Raoul Rushin, real estate business developer and president of The Landings Company, a master-planned community located 10 miles outside downtown Savannah, Ga. However, as exciting as it is to relocate to a dream area, heading to a new city is one of life’s most stressful events. Use these tips to ease your concerns. Think long-term. “Many homeowners choose to relocate based on a favorite vacation spot,” notes Rushin. “However, the remote, relaxing feel of your getaway may not be ideal for your forever home. Proximity and easy access to shopping, entertainment, schools and professional services should be key considerations.”

Once you’ve keyed in on the city, don’t just jump to house shopping. Instead find the right community that fits your lifestyle. Are you a golfer, biker, nature-enthusiast? Think about the things that bring you the most pleasure and look for

Research social clubs or other activities that you can get involved with to meet others with similar interests. “At The Landings, more than 50 percent of our buyers are from out of state, so we help facilitate friendships through our New Neighbors group,” says Rushin. “The unique social group welcomes members to participate in a variety of activities and events for the first two years after their move to make new friends, as well as learn about the rich history of the area and the community.” For more information on The Landings, visit www.thelandings. com. How Single-Use Plastics Are Driving Climate Change Did you know that single-use plastic is a major driver of climate change and is harmful to human health -- even when it’s recycled? According to a new report, leading consumer goods companies are driving the expansion of plastic production. And by doing so, are threatening the global climate and the health and safety of communities around the world. The Greenpeace USA report, “The Climate Emergency Unpacked: How Consumer Goods Companies are Fueling Big Oil’s Plastic Expansion,” exposes the business links between the world’s largest consumer goods and fossil fuel companies. Without this transparency, the report’s authors say that consumer goods companies are largely able to avoid accountability for environmental or human rights violations committed by the companies that supply plastic for their packaging. “The same well-known brands driving the plastic pollution crisis are helping fuel the climate crisis,” says Greenpeace USA global plastics project leader, Graham Forbes. “Despite their best efforts to appear climate-
friendly, consumer goods companies are working alongside the fossil fuel industry to expand plastic production, which could lock the world into catastrophic emissions levels
and a planet warmed beyond saving.” Indeed, over 99 percent of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and according to industry estimates, plastic production could triple by 2050. This projected growth would increase
global emissions from the plastic life cycle by over 50 percent on 2019 levels by 2030, equivalent to nearly 300 coal-fired power plants. This is the same timeframe that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned human caused emissions must fall by nearly 50 percent to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C. The report also details how single-use plastics hurt people who live on the frontlines of its production. Plastic production has been linked to health issues like cancer and asthma, and these impacts are disproportionately felt by poor communities and communities of color.
Despite the many adverse impacts of singleuse plastic packaging, the report finds that consumer goods companies have partnered with fossil fuel companies for decades to advocate recycling, while opposing legislation that would restrict its production “The world’s largest brands are working with the fossil fuel industry to use recycling as a smokescreen. Recycling will never be the answer to the plastic pollution crisis,” says Forbes. Greenpeace is calling on consumer goods companies to urgently move toward systems of reuse and package-free products, to phase out single-use plastics and to be more transparent about their plastic and carbon footprints. To learn more and to read the full report, visit greenpeace.org/usa/reports. “These companies can no longer hide behind their nostalgic, happy brands. We urge them to support an ambitious global plastics treaty that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastic and emphasizes reduction,” says Forbes. (StatePoint)

Skin Care Tips For When Sun Season Is Over
While basic sun protection is likely your top skin care priority in summer, during the fall season, it’s time to address other skin care concerns. One matter in particular to pay close attention to is scarring. This is because sun exposure can cause further discoloration in scars. What’s more, scar tissue is more susceptible than other skin to sun damage.
mind that you can still be exposed to sun beyond summer and when indoors, so consider dressing accordingly.
Whether you’re dealing with surgical scars, scars from scrapes, cuts, or burns, here’s what you need to know about caring for these vulnerable areas of skin after a season of summer sun: • Cover scars: Protect scars from additional sun exposure whenever possible. Keep in
• Amplify your protection: As you are apple and pumpkin picking, make sure not to shelve the SPF! Stay consistent with sun protection and be sure your routine also includes vitamin C. Protecting skin from oxidative damage caused by daily exposure to light, heat and pollution, vitamin C is an ingredient vital to healthy skin that amplifies protection and is the
How Some Patients Are Finding Drug-Free Relief From Chronic Pain
Chronic pain like VanCamp’s is a serious medical issue and can be linked to restrictions in mobility and daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety and depression, and poor perceived health or reduced quality of life. Unfortunately, it is also an issue exacerbated by recent world events. In a survey conducted by Boston Scientific of chronic pain sufferers, nearly half of the respondents reported that their pain had worsened during the pandemic.
• Take charge: Doctors recommend having a trusted scar care product readily available in your cabinet. “You need one with a high-concentration of silicone to deliver soothing protection to all scars, whether they come as a result of a cosmetic procedure or an unintended wound,” says Dr. Catherine Chang, SkinCeuticals partner physician with Cassileth Plastic Surgery. One new option to consider is SkinCeuticals Advanced Scar Control, a long-lasting semiocclusive treatment designed to protect vulnerable skin and help improve the appearance of new and recent scars. This protective technology is specifically formulated for different types of scars, is appropriate for multiple skin tones, and can complement surgical procedures. In clinical trials, subjects saw a significant improvement in new and recent scar redness, discoloration and texture, with a 29% improvement in overall appearance in just 12 weeks.
When Chad VanCamp, 42, began feeling intense pain in his tailbone whenever he sat down, life changed. Suddenly, his favorite hobbies became unbearable and he began dreading everyday activities that most people wouldn’t think twice about -- car rides, airplane trips and even going out to dinner. More than 50 million people in the United States live with chronic pain -- which is pain that persists for six months or longer. Unfortunately, many suffer without finding relief, and not for lack of trying. Pain is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care, but its sources are often complex and difficult to diagnose. Additionally, patients may not be familiar with the wide range of available treatments. As for VanCamp, he tried many different relief strategies, including visiting his family doctor, seeing a chiropractor, and getting cortisone shots. Some of these measures provided him with temporary relief, but nothing worked long-term. Eventually, the pain was so intense that he even met with a doctor to discuss the possibility of having his tailbone removed. Having left no stone unturned, VanCamp was angry and frustrated, nearly resigning himself to the idea that relief might never come.
ultimate complement to daily SPF. Check out the portfolio of vitamin C products from SkinCeuticals, which offers something for every skin type. Backed by 16 clinical studies and over 30 years of research, the brand’s serums serve as the gold standard for a host of skin care benefits, including correcting the appearance of uneven skin tone and helping to prevent future skin damage.
“Given that the opioid epidemic continues to surge, educating patients about non-drug treatment interventions is critical,” says Dr. Louis Raso, a pain specialist and owner of an interventional pain management practice. “Pain physicians actually have many nondrug tools in our toolbox to address chronic pain.” For example, Dr. Raso treats many of his patients with spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Most commonly used to treat pain experienced in the lower back, legs and feet, SCS interrupts the perception of pain as it travels to the brain. This small device is implanted under the skin and flexible leads are connected to the stimulator and placed near specific nerves along the spinal cord. And because each person experiences pain differently, patients can adjust the programming of the device to personalize their treatment. When VanCamp realized that his pain was hindering his ability to be fully present in his life and the lives of his family members, he underwent a procedure to implant the Spectra WaveWriter SCS System from Boston Scientific, which is designed to of-
fer fast, tailored pain relief. That was twoand-a-half years ago, and with SCS, he’s had nearly complete pain relief. Today, favorite activities like family bike rides and hunting trips are no big deal. He even went horseback riding – something he’d never dreamed he’d be able to do just a few years ago. “Above all else, SCS has helped me feel like a normal person again,” says VanCamp. “While results may vary among patients, I would urge anyone living with chronic pain to consider this and other treatment options, and to remember that they’re not ‘broken,’ they’re just in pain. Don’t ever give up searching. I found SCS and it completely turned my life around.” To learn more about chronic pain, take a pain assessment quiz, connect with other patients and find a pain management specialist in your area, visit pain.com, a resource from Boston Scientific. Chronic pain can make daily life unbearable. However, experts say that non-drug therapies can provide a long-term solution for patients. (StatePoint)
Plus, using Advanced Scar Control benefits SkinCeuticals and ReSurge International’s charity program, Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery, an initiative that provides surgical training, leadership development and mentorship to women surgeons in high-need areas worldwide so they can complete life-changing surgeries. The initiative has reached 12 countries and over 700 medical professionals. To learn more, visit skinceuticals.com/womensurgeon. • Get a check-up: Fall is an excellent time of year to check your annual dermatologist appointment off your to-do list. During your visit, your dermatologist will evaluate moles, discoloration and other skin issues. Should your doctor find it necessary to perform a biopsy or mole removal, you’ll be well-prepared to care for any resulting scar tissue by following the above tips. While you may view scars as beyond your control, there’s good news -- a scar care routine can reduce the appearance of scars and better protect this vulnerable skin from additional damage. Many people look forward to their retirement for years. However, once it begins, they may find all the newfound free time overwhelming. If you’re planning on retiring soon, having
a plan for how you’ll spend your time is important for your health and happiness. Here are five ideas for staying mentally and physically active, as well as engaged in your community: 1. Start a walking meet-up: Host a morning walking group in your neighborhood. A brisk morning walk is a low-impact way to get in shape and keep your heart healthy. Plus, the fresh air and camaraderie is good for your mental wellbeing. To ensure the group’s success, keep meetup times consistent and let participants know in advance the pace and distance you plan to walk. You may even want to start a fun tradition, such as ending every stroll session at a local coffee shop. 2. Become a tax expert: Consider taking an online course on how to do taxes and become a resource for friends during tax season. Get prepared by visiting the IRS site, which provides information on tax return preparer credentials and qualifications, as well as details about how this year’s tax laws have changed and how they’ll impact deductions. Equip yourself with a good printing calculator, such as the HR-170 from Casio, which features two-color printing and Cost/Sell/Margin functionality. The calculator allows you to check and correct up to 150 steps and print your calculations after correction so you can maintain accuracy. Plus, its clock and calendar features
will help you stay organized. 3. Volunteer your skills: Many recent immigrants need logistical help getting situated in the United States. If you speak a foreign language, consider volunteering through your
local library or community center. Become a literacy buddy to your new neighbors or help them complete essential paperwork, such as job applications and school enrollment forms. 4. Learn music at your own pace: It’s never too late to begin your music education. Whether you’re learning to play the piano for the first time or revisiting an old passion, new tools will allow you to hone your skills independently and effectively. Check out Casiotone keyboards, which are portable and well-suited for any level of play, as most of the models have features that will guide you through its built-in songs by either a key-lighting system or an on-screen step-bystep process. With the ability to slow the tempo to aid in practice, or learn melodies individually by selecting left-hand or right-hand parts only, you can quickly master favorite tunes and build your musical confidence. 5. Read the classics: Are there classic books you’ve always wanted to read but have never gotten around to? Use your abundance of free time to finally make your way through your literary bucket list. Whether it’s “Moby Dick” or “Ulysses,” consider inviting friends to participate. Challenging titles will be more easily and enjoyably tackled with friends and a discussion schedule. To promote your health and happiness in retirement, keep your body and mind active and engaged. (StatePoint)

1. Something they’ll use. Nowadays, there’s a good chance there’s a subscription box filled with items your recipient needs or will always use, from clothes, snacks and razors, to tools, toys and pet supplies. For example, if your friend picks up wine every time they grocery shop, a subscription to a monthly wine club won’t go to waste. In fact, it will probably be an appreciated gift! Many boxes offer flexibility for the red, white, or roséall-day person’s preferences and include additions each month. 2. Something personalized. Custom gifts show true thoughtfulness and can make someone feel extra special on their birthday. Smashups are a fun and lighthearted way to virtually say “happy birthday” to friends, family members, and co-workers. 3. Something they’ve always wanted. Difficult to shop for people often have birthday gift ideas for themselves or items they’ve always wanted that they’ll never buy or request. Maybe it’s a high-ticket item or maybe it’s something simple that other purchases just get prioritized over. If you know of such an item, consider giving it as a gift! Your friend will feel good receiving a gift from someone who was listening and understands them. 4. Something they didn’t know they needed. Sometimes, you can’t put your finger on a practical item that you know the person will use and have to use your best judgment. Though it could be as simple as a mug or digital picture frame, these are often the best gifts of all,
because the people receiving them likely never thought of them either. 5. Something that requires thought. If the person you’re shopping for has a lot of “stuff,” stop thinking of additional items to give them. Shift your focus and gift them your time or attention. If it’s a significant other, plan a special date night on the town or in the house. If it’s a parent or grandparent, consider what experiences or events they might appreciate; maybe its going to a play, watching a movie or taking a trip as a family. Not all gifts have to cost a lot; in fact, some of the best gifts are ones that create memories. For more clever birthday gift ideas and ways to celebrate, visit: www. americangreetings.com/smashups. The Peace Corps Is Recruiting Volunteers From Diverse Backgrounds The Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and AsianAmericans. “As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps. “We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential.” If you’re interested in Peace Corps service, here’s what to know.

from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) f r o m 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many simi-
larities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the
skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. I also translated most of my CPR and first aid materials into Kyrgyz,” says Lee, who notes that, “Volunteering opens so many doors in the future, and the people you meet along the way will help you.” To learn more about Peace Corps or to connect with a recruiter, visit peacecorps.gov. “Volunteers are international cultural ambassadors representing the United States. That’s why it’s so important our body of volunteers actually reflects the diversity of the country,” says Spahn. (StatePoint)
Why Civic Engagement Matters For Companies And Nonprofits New research reveals that not only has America’s largest generation -- millennials -- become more civically engaged since the pandemic began, but that the time is right for nonprofits and companies to help all Americans see how profoundly they can influence social change.
often to learn about their efforts. Tapping into the report’s findings can help businesses and nonprofits seeking to prioritize purpose more
The new survey from Points of Light, a nonpartisan, global nonprofit organization that inspires, equips and mobilizes millions of people to take action that changes the world, conducted by INFLUENCE|SG, found that almost 50% of millennials believe in the power of civic engagement more now than before the pandemic, 69% are more likely to volunteer and 85% think people should help their community and the world.
effectively work with customers and supporters to move the needle on critical issues facing communities today. Here are the three key takeaways for businesses and nonprofits:
Millennials also believe companies should be actively involved in social issues and two-thirds visit corporate websites at least somewhat
• Get personal: In many ways, millennials were the hardest hit by the uncertainty of the pandemic. Those with children suddenly had
to teach them at home; some had parents and grandparents who were getting sick and even dying. It’s no surprise that the social issues millennials care about today have gotten personal. “What we learned from our research is that personal experience is driving the civic issues millennials care about and will act to support, as well as their own desire to make a positive difference in the world,” says Natalye Paquin, president and CEO of Points of Light. “Rather than asking millennials to help you reach a goal, consider asking them what they need and how you can work alongside each other to have the biggest impact.”
• Address what’s important: Respondents said that the top issues the country must address postpandemic are healthcare (29%), criminal and social justice (24%), education (21%), environment/climate (21%) and financial recovery efforts from COVID-19 (17%.) When it comes to issues of widespread importance, entities seeking to be drivers of change can and should meet the public where they are. • Discover ways to take action: Civic action can take on many forms, from signing a petition to participating in a rally, to reaching out to one’s political representatives. Not sure where to start? Consider “the Civic Circle,” which is a framework developed by Points of Light to define the many ways people and entities can lead, lend support and take action for causes. The nine activities outlined by the Civic Circle are: listening and
learning, using one’s voice, social entrepreneurship, volunteering, public, national or military service, using one’s purchasing power to express their values, working, voting and donating. “More than almost any other civic action, respondents today are devoting time to increasing their knowledge about social issues. In other words, they are preparing themselves to be fluent consumers of the information causes and companies intend to share,” says Paquin. “This gives companies opportunities to become vital, trusted sources of information.” For additional insights and to learn more, visit pointsoflight.org. “By partnering with them on addressing the issues that matter to them most, nonprofits and businesses can play a vital role in keeping this generation’s attitudes of empathy, interest and willingness to fix society’s ills thriving,” says Paquin. Family Conversations May Reveal Critical Health History
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a rare disease that can be passed down from generation to generation within families. This condition causes numerous cysts to grow in the kidneys, resulting in the kidneys enlarging and losing function over time. Additionally, nearly 50 percent of affected patients over age 60 will experience kidney failure or end stage renal disease (ESRD). The most common form of PKD is Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) which, according to the National Kidney Foundation, accounts for nearly 90 percent of all PKD cases. ADPKD affects an estimated 140,000 Americans. While relatively rare, it is the most common inherited kidney disease and the fourth leading overall cause of end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure. As a progressive condition, ADPKD may eventually lead to kidney failure requiring some form of renal replacement therapy, such as dialysis or kidney transplant. “Although seemingly rare, ADPKD is quite prevalent and affects many families generation after generation. In fact, children of par-
ents with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease, and spontaneous mutations can occur in new generations as well,” says Meyeon Park, MD, MAS, director of the UCSF Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence and nephrologist, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. “This emphasizes the importance of people with a family history of PKD discussing the condition with their relatives, as well as the importance of speaking with a doctor who specializes in kidney care as early as possible.” Diagnosing ADPKD ADPKD is typically diagnosed by an ultrasound of the kidneys; however, a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan may also be
conducted. Genetic testing may sometimes be used for people who have received an inconclusive imaging result, have no family history of the condition, who may be considering testing to determine if they can pass the gene on to their children, and for diagnosis of possible kidney donors. Using the latest technologies, physicians can now identify ADPKD patients at risk for rapid progression of kidney function decline as well as estimate how quickly someone with ADPKD is likely to progress to kidney failure based on the size of his or her kidneys. Although disease progression can be highly variable, even among family members, it’s important to confirm diagnosis early as patients with rapidly progressing ADPKD reach end stage renal disease at a younger age. Disease Management Strategies Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for ADPKD patients, since this disease progressively gets worse over time and cannot be reversed. While signs and symptoms often develop between ages of 30 and 40, individuals with a history of kidney diseases – and especially if ADPKD runs in the family – shouldn’t delay speaking with a kidney specialist, also known as a nephrologist. By acting early, individuals may be able to take steps to help protect kidney function and properly manage the disease, as well as any related complications such as high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, infected or bleeding cysts, abdominal bloating or discomfort and chronic pain. “Take advantage of educational resources, such as www.ADPKDQuestions.com, to better understand the disease, available disease management strategies and recommended lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet and staying physically active,” continues Dr. Park, MD, MAS, director of the UCSF Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence and nephrologist, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. “Being an empowered patient early on will help foster informed conversations about ADPKD with both relatives and health care providers, and may ultimately help to delay disease progression.” (StatePoint)

According to Dr. Thanh Dinh, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) two of the most common types of pain women feel in their feet in autumn come from bunions and hammertoes.
A common myth is that tight-fitting or narrow shoes cause bunions. The truth is, bunions are genetic. However, symptoms occur most often when wearing high heels or other styles that crowd the toes. “A bunion is a change in the bony framework of the front part of the foot and is most often caused by an

burning sensation. Demystifying Hammertoes “A hammertoe is a ‘bending’ or contracture deformity of one or both joints of a toe,” Dr. Dinh says. “The abnormal bending puts pressure on the toe when wearing shoes and causes problems to develop -which can start mildly and worsen over time.” Women with hammertoes can ex-
ties and alleviate pain. Those who suffer from both ailments can have surgery to correct the foot deformities at the same time.
Proper shoe selection and conservative treatments can go a long way in managing pain from bunions and hammertoes. Foot and ankle surgeons recommend avoiding high-heeled shoes and styles that crowd the toes together, as well as using padding and taking antiinflammatory medication.
“Recovery time varies based on the procedures performed, the advancement of the deformities, the number of toes involved, age and other factors, but the success rates for the surgeries are encouraging,” says Dr. Dinh. “Plus, the advanced procedures foot and ankle surgeons perform today to fix bunion deformities reduce the likelihood of a recurrence,” she adds. Experiencing increased foot pain? Make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon to see how they can help alleviate pain. Visit FootHealthFacts.org to access the Find an ACFAS Physician Tool.
While these techniques address pain, they don’t generally stop bunions or hammertoes from getting worse. Surgery is commonly performed by foot and ankle surgeons to both correct the deformi-

Still Cooking With Gas Or Electric? A Case For Induction Cooking The best kitchen updates don’t just enhance the beauty of your space. They allow you to simplify your life, make better choices, and improve your relationship with your kitchen. And who knows? They may even make you a better cook! To that end, you may want to consider trading in your gas or electric cooktop for an induction model. “Outdated misconceptions about the cost and reliability of induction cooking have prevented many American households from making the switch,” says Peter Weedfald, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America. “However, induction technology offers quicker heating and boiling than gas or electric counterparts, more precise temperature control, easier cleanup, enhanced safety, and key eco-friendly perks.” To help demystify induction cooking, Weedfald is offering some insights into how the technology works and how it can benefit your
• Eco-friendly design: Induction cooking can help you reduce your carbon footprint at home. With induction, up to 90% of the energy consumed is transferred to food, compared to approximately 74% for traditional electric systems and 40% for gas, according to the Electric Power Research Institute.
kitchen: • Magnetic technology: Induction cooking skips the need to heat a burner, increasing the overall heating efficiency. Instead, it automatically detects when magnetic cookware is placed on the cooking zone. An electromagnetic field located below the cooktop transfers current (heat) directly to the cookware. The good news? You probably already own magnetic cookware. Many stainless steel, enamel-coated iron, and cast iron pots and pans are magnetic, and
some manufacturers have added steel or iron plates to the bottom of ceramic, copper, aluminum, and other pans. If you put a magnet to the bottom of your cookware and it sticks, it’s magnetic and will work on induction. Concerned that one of your faithful pans won’t work? • Precise cooking: Some induction cooktops offer a wide range of temperature settings from low to high, as well as timers, for super-precise heating and overall faster boiling.
• Cleaner indoor air: A study conducted for Southern California by the Environmental Health Perspectives found that residential natural gas cooking burners can emit air pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Unlike gas stoves, induction cooktops don’t release the airborne pollutants associated with burning natural gas. • Safety first: Induction cooking carries less risk of burns and fires. Only the area the cookware occupies is transferring heat, not the surrounding area. Plus, the cooking zone stays cool even when turned on and is only activated when magnetic cookware is placed on top of
it. • Sleek design: Induction cooktops have a sleek glass-ceramic surface that not only looks great in any style kitchen but makes cleanup as simple as wiping down the surface. • Cost: Upgrading to an induction cooktop was once expensive. But like with most innovations, not only has the technology substantially improved over time, the prices have dropped. For example, the 30-inch option from Sharp Appliances is commonly sold at just above $1,000. To learn more about induction technology and smart home appliances, visit sharpusa.com. Whether it’s time to replace your cooktop or you simply want to try something new, consider induction technology for an overall improved kitchen experience. (StatePoint)

Hate Bugs? Here’s How To Remove The Ick-Factor From Your Home
Hate bugs? You’re not alone. Nearly seven in 10 Americans can’t sleep if they know there’s an insect in the room, according to a recent survey conducted by OnePoll for Zevo. The same poll also found that two in three Americans would give up a month’s pay to not deal with bugs!
Here are a few ways to help keep America’s top three hated bugs: cockroaches, spiders and ants, along with a host of other common insects, out of your home. 1. Guard doors and windows: Keep doors and windows sealed when they’re not in use. If you love a fresh breeze, be sure that your screen doors and windows are in tip top shape and contain no holes. Don’t have a screen door? Consider quickly installing a mesh door screen over your front door or patio door that seals up the middle with a magnet. This is a good choice for renters and others unable to make more intensive home updates.
Science says your visceral reaction is actually quite rational. According to researchers at the University of California, Davis, those creepycrawly feelings you may experience upon seeing a bug is simply nature’s way of helping you avoid pathogens and parasites. The good news? Insect experts say that there are steps you can take to protect your home turf from disgusting bugs and other pests.
2. Seal holes: Use an afternoon to caulk small cracks in your home’s foundation and siding. This is a quick, easy and affordable way to seal these common entry points for bugs.
“While you should not lose your healthy distaste for bugs, you can take steps to keep them out of your home,” says Daniel Perry, entomologist at Procter & Gamble.
3. Remove their food source: Bugs need a food source to survive, so keep your home clean. In the kitch-
en, seal your trash bin and remove its contents regularly, wipe down surfaces -- especially after spills, and sweep up those crumbs. A cockroach can survive months on a single crumb of food! Be sure to regularly vacuum furniture, rugs and carpets in any room where you eat. 4. Blast bugs: Bugs will find their way into your home no matter how hard you try to keep them out. Because a small bug problem can spread quickly, it’s important to be ready to meet them head-on. Zevo sprays, including the brand’s Multi-Insect Killer Spray, are powered by essential oils. If you’re tired of being grossed out in your own home, it’s time to take charge. Not only can you help prevent insects from invading your home, you can swing into action at the first sign of bugs to make sure it doesn’t become a bigger problem for you and your family later. As the days grow shorter and we head into fall, it’s one of the best times of year to enhance your backyard life at night.
One other thing you’ll want to consider is whether you’ll be able to make light connections in discreet places, ideally where they connect to the wall, post or tree.
While hiring someone to install outdoor lighting can be really expensive and involved, patio string lights are a simple, cost-effective solution.
“Having a connection in the middle of a swag won’t be the end of the world, but you’ll want to minimize this as much as possible,” says Scott.
Best of all, you can create a look that reflects your style using any number of patterns. In a recent episode of “Done-In-AWeekend Projects” called “Light Up Your Life,” expert landscape designer Doug Scott demonstrated how to hang string lights, as well as discussed what to consider before, and while, doing so.

Seema Azam - Helping Afghan Refugees With Pushto, Supplies And Super Ladies
By Sumaiya Malik When Seema Azam moved to Texas with her husband in 1995, she had no idea that years later, she would be helping Afghan refugees with language services in Austin.
Many went back but some settled permanently in Pakistan entering mostly from NW Pakistan and settling around Peshawar.
She was fluent in three languages, one of them being Pushto, spoken in northern parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“I remember noticing Afghan children in my class in 6th grade class,” Azam said.
Pakistan is home to more than 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees, many of whom entered Pakistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979, Al-Jazeera said. At one point in 2001 there were up to 3 million.
I have a lot of stuff in my closet, with clothes and shoes. I started realizing how blessed I am.”
Case managers at RST use interpreters like Seema Azam to help refugees understand how to apply for food stamps, jobs, social security services and to also settle them in homes and start schooling for their children.
She decided to do more than provide interpretation. “I reached out to my friends, and they reached out to theirs to help [gather household items and clothing] the Afghan refugees resettle,” she said.
Out of about a hundred families that Azam has helped over the last three years through the non-profit, only a handful could understand some basic English, she said.
She had also seen Afghans settle around Peshawar, her home city, after the first Afghan War in 1979.
“They were fluent in Pushto, had bought homes and businesses in my city.”
in Texas over the past many years, but now the number has vastly increased.
Now living in Austin, Texas, for the past thirty years, Azam is an independent contractor who provides interpretation services to incoming Afghan refugees hosted by the Refugee Services of Texas, RST. The refugees have been arriving
37,000 Afghan refugees are slated to come to the United States after the U.S. troops pulled out of Afghanistan and Taliban government took over control of the country this August, Axios said on Sept. 16. Out of these, about 4,500 are already in Texas. “I saw that people from Afghanistan left with small backpacks and documents,” she said. “I felt for those people.
Word got out and soon Super Ladies, a WhatsApp group with 85 members from all over Austin invited Azam to join them to help quicken her collection. “Nothing is small and good intentions bring lots of goodness,” Suboohi Humaira, the admin of the group said about the kinds of help they provide to those in need. “The ladies help who ever reaches out to them from funds to pots and pans, and clothing,” Azam said.
“Boxes started arriving on my doorstep,” she said. All these goods will go to RSTX to help the refugee resettle in their new lives. “Wherever I go, people come and ask how they can help,” Azam said. “My garage and shed is full of boxes of home items and clothing.” Azam suggested pledging or donating directly to RST to help the Afghans at rstx.org. “Not only can you pledge anything: furniture, clothing, utensils, you can reach out through email or call,” she said. “They can send someone to pick up the stuff.” She is grateful to the Super Ladies and to all those who reach out to her. “Everybody is doing their part as much as they can,” Azam said.

Soul Stirring Music By Atif Aslam- Revisited By Sumaiya Malik Pakistani pop singer Atif Aslam whose rocking performance in Austin with Indian star Sonu Nigam in 2016 still rings in our ears is all set for a television debut with a Pakistani HumTV drama serial Sang-e-Mah. The drama is a sequel to Pakistani Pushto drama Sang-e-Marmar from 2016 available for free on YouTube. It is expected to be the second in a trilogy with star-studded cast in addition to Aslam. But Aslam came to fame with his singing career with hits after hits in the music world and song releases in Pakistan, where he hails from. We highlight two of his songs for our readers: Aslam’s Doorie – separation is
hard to endure – shows up on my Spotify list as I drive to run errands in my car. The album released in 2006 is a modern soulful experience where Aslam casts a spell with the depth of his voice to hold the listener in a trance. The modern and traditional mix of instruments unite the then to now and bring what was and what is to co-exist. Although Aslam identifies himself as a pop singer, Doorie clearly establishes him as a soul stirrer as he has done through this song for me. He continues his soulful spell in Tajdar-e-Haram - a song of tribute - that begins with the sitar, a traditional South Asian instrument, and followed by the guitar, a natural modern mix. Aslam uses lyrics to call attention to the presence of a universal
higher being to whom he calls out in prayer for help. The song is far from sad. In fact, it is more like a celebration of life where the caller’s prayers are answered. Aslam released the song in 2015 and was not the first to sing this tribute. Tajdar-e-Haram was first released by the Sabri Brothers in 1996. Their style was more “Qawwali” which according to Oxford dictionary is a traditional style of devotional music particularly tied to Sufis. Atif Aslam’s release brought the song into mainstream pop genre. Aslam’s silver screen debut “Bol” with Mahira Khan became a super hit and showed his caliber as an actor in 2011, but music is his first and foremost passion.

Modi-Biden Bilateral Talks: U.S.-India Ties Can Help In Solving A LotOof Global Challenges, Says Biden (Continued From Page 01) “We have to utilize our talents to leverage technology for the greater global good,” he said. This is the two leaders’ first in-person meeting since Biden took office as president early this year. Modi extended his gratitude to Biden for a “warm welcome.” “I would like to extend my gratitude to President Biden for the warm welcome not only to me but my delegation,” he said in his opening remarks. Highlighting the importance of business ties between the two countries, Modi told Biden that there is much to be done in the field of trade. Modi said the U.S. president is taking initiatives to implement his vision for bilateral relations. He further added this decade will be shaped by talent and people-to-people linkages. “I am
glad the Indian diaspora is making an active contribution towards USA’s progress,” prime minister said.Moments before his meeting with Modi, Biden in a tweet said he is looking forward to strengthening the deep ties between the two countries. “This morning I’m hosting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House for a bilateral meeting. I look forward to strengthening the deep ties between our two nations, working to uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific, and tackling everything from COVID-19 to climate change,” Biden said in a tweet. Reviewing the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between the two countries has been the agenda of the talks. Since January, Modi and Biden have
participated in three summits. Two of them were hosted by President Biden – the Quad virtual summit in March and the Climate Change Summit in April which was also held virtually. During the meeting Sept. 24, Modi praised Biden for his efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and promoting Quad. “Soon after assuming the presidential office, the U.S. president made unique efforts on COVID-19 pandemic, Quad and climate change and I think his efforts will make a larger impact in the coming days.” Modi said Biden is taking initiatives to implement his vision for India-U.S. relations. “Earlier, we had an opportunity to hold discussions and at that time you had laid out the vision for India-U.S. bilateral relations,” Modi
said. “Today, you are taking initiatives to implement your vision for India-U.S. relations,” Modi while interacting with the Biden. After Biden said that the U.S. would celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, Modi said the Mahatma’s ‘trusteeship’ concept would be important for our planet in times to come.

“President Joe Biden mentioned Gandhiji’s Jayanti. Mahatma Gandhi always used to talk about trusteeship of the planet, a concept which is important for our planet in times to come,” Modi said during the bilateral talks, whose remarks came as both countries are firmly committed to work together in achieving ambitious climate and clean energy targets.
The crowd looked full of enthusiasm and holding banners and the Indian flag. Local community members, meanwhile, have also prepared a pamphlet saying ‘American Welcomes Modi -2021’, which is being circulated over social media.

How To Ensure Social Media Doesn’t Harm Your Teen’s Self-Esteem Recently made public internal research from Facebook reveals that its photo-sharing app Instagram can have harmful impacts on young users, particularly girls.
social media is harmful. Many young people are using such apps
to help their teens develop healthier relationships with their devices
Many in the U.S. and U.K. study say they feel “addicted” to these apps, while at the same time, attributing depression and anxiety to their use of them.
Whether it’s sports, playing in a band or taking a pottery class, you can encourage your child to both embrace hobbies and interests outside the world of their screens, as well as to spend more time with friends in person. • Real talk: One of the major aspects of social media is that what people choose to share publicly is not always a reflection of reality.
While the research is still evolving, one thing is certain. Adolescence can be a time period for many young people that’s already rife with body image issues, insecurities and emotional and mental health challenges.
Have a conversation with your kids about the many ways that influencers and other social media users apply filters, photo editing software and other tools to create impossible goals for their followers.

and the apps they use most frequently.” Here are a few strategies to consider: • Alternatives: When it comes to the way young people pass their time outside of school, there are limitless alternatives to social media.
This might also be a good time to discuss what sort of content they’re engaging with so you can try to steer them in a more positive direction. • New tools: Attempts to set social media boundaries can be easier said than done both for the primary
user (your teen) and you. Apps designed for this purpose can help. For example, the parental guidance app OurPact allows you to install a profile on your child’s device. Then, you can remotely set up automated schedules for when internet and apps are unavailable, or block access manually to the device for a specified period of time. Features like URL whitelisting and blacklisting and daily screen time allowances can help you stay engaged with how your child uses their device. Available at the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, parents can also sign up for an account at www.ourpact.com. “While social media apps are not going away any time soon, parents can take concrete steps to help ensure teens are using them in ways that make them happy,” says Havner. For other purchases you make this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month that make charitable claims, Susan G. Komen recommends asking the following questions: 1. What charity is the program supporting? Do promotional materials about the product or service clearly and conspicuously state this information? 2. How will the benefitting charity use the donation? You should be made aware where your money is going and what charitable programs your purchase will support.
Funds raised to benefit Komen, for example, go to support the organization’s advocacy for breast cancer patients, investments in research and a number of direct patient care services. 3. How is the program structured? What percentage or exact amount of the proceeds will go to the charity? Will the company be making a minimum or maximum donation to the charity? Shop only with companies that offer transparency with regards to program details and how donations are structured. By shopping savvy this October, you can support the fight against breast cancer and ensure your purchases are making the biggest impact possible. (StatePoint)

Halloween
Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of “All Hallows’ evening”), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day.
It begins the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. One theory holds that many Halloween traditions may have been influenced by ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the
Gaelic festival Samhain, which may have had pagan roots; some scholars hold that Samhain may
have been Christianized as All Hallow’s Day, along with its eve, by the early Church. Other academics believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow’s Day. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, as well as watching horror films. One of the most followed spiritual figures worldwide is the great Buddha. His teachings are widely followed by the Buddhist monks and his followers.
Important Historical Moments in the History of Lumbini The legendary Indian Emperor developed the Lumbini which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
However, Nepal is directly linked with Buddha and Buddhism via a place named Lumbini. This beautiful place is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As per the Buddhist tradition, Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who is also known as Buddha. This place is located in the Terai region of Southern Nepal and is very close to the Indian Nepalese border. Irrespective of their religion, people from all walks of life are always fascinated by the beauty of this place. It is easy to reach Lumbini due to Gautam Buddha Airport at Bhaira-
Later on, Mahaprajapati took over the role of becoming Siddhartha’s foster mother. Later on, Buddha left his luxurious life after watching the pain and suffering faced by the poor. Later on, Buddha found enlightenment. Buddhism is now one of the most followed religions in the world.
Ashoka had visited Lumbini around 248 BCE and had erected a pillar that had the content commemorating the birth of Buddha. Later on, he built a wall around the village and created four stupas to mark the spot.

A Chinese pilgrim named Faxian made another visit around 403 CE. The history and beauty of Lumbini fascinated Faxian, and he wrote about it in his works named “A record of the Buddhistic Kingdom”. Later on, as time passed, another Chinese pilgrim named Xuanzang visited Lumbini after two hundred

Birbal replied, “ I take so much donations from you and because of that there are no hairs on my palm.” Ha.ha..ha.. Birbal indeed is very funny.. What do you think King Akbar’s next question for Birbal would be? Will he be able to answer that question? Let’s read further. Akbar wanted to defeat birbal in this talk, he again questioned Birbal, “ Why there are no hairs in our courtiers palms?”
Birbal understood that emperor was testing him so he replied, “ Badshah! The answer to this one is pretty simple. When you give me rewards than these poor courtesies get zealous and start rubbing their hands and because of that no hairs grow on their palms. Everyone’s jaw dropped after listening to Birbal’s answer. King Akbar understood that there is no point in arguing with Birbal as he is Hazir jawab – ready to answer on any topic.
years. He observed that the pillars were destroyed by lightning and the popularity of the site had decreased gradually. After many years, the area came under the control of the Muslim leaders and was destroyed and later on, was under the control of the Hindu kings. The shifting of rulership based on religion severely affected the condition of Lumbini as the site was being destroyed gradually. In 1895 CE, a German archaeologist named Alois Fuhrer was successful in rediscovering Lumbini. Alois had unearthed some structures built by Ashoka. There was a temple which depicted Buddha’s life. The temple also covers the actual place where Lord Buddha was born. This place was discovered in the year 1996 CE. Present Lumbini Lumbini is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It acts as one of the major tourist attractions in Nepal. In the year 2001, Nipponzan Myohoji built a Peace Pagoda in the park. This Peace Pagoda is visited by many people daily irrespective of religion and culture. The history of Lumbini is an important site for Buddhists and Hindus. The ruins of the ancient monasteries depict the story of the rise of Buddhism culture. The sacred Bodhi tree, the ancient bathing pond, and the pillars are an integral part of Nepal’s history too. To dig out more facts and showcase the beauty of Lumbini, there are multiple monuments and monasteries. The Lumbini International Research Institute is also present at the holy site which focuses on the history of this heritage site. As Lumbini is one of the four main pilgrimage points, it is Nepal’s most important treasure.

Museum Residency Exhibition
The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center will host an in-person artist talk for The Small Black Museum Residency Exhibition on Saturday, October 2 from 1 – 3 p.m. Featured artists from the inaugural residency cohort includes: Temitope Olujobi, Hypatia Sorunke, and Adrian Armstrong.
Olujobi is an architect turned game designer who utilizes virtual landscapes as a medium to deconstruct and contemplate linearity and binary gender expression. Sorunke uses film in both print and motionmedia to navigate what it means to return to a sense of “normalcy” built around an unbalanced social and economic system. Armstrong treats collage and acrylic based paintings as a vehicle to disrupt the expectation to embody “Black Excellence” through a series of both simple and glorifying portraiture. The group exhibition marks the completion of the first residency
series, which aims to support and promote both established and emerging artists of African descent. The artist talk will delve into the new series of works produced by the artists during their threemonth residency which are now on view in the Carver Museum’s gallery until January 2022. The talk will be moderated by Kendyll Gross, Education Coordinator at The Art Galleries at Black Studies at University of Texas at Austin and a doctoral candidate at the Department of Art History at UT Austin. The artist talk will be hosted in the atrium of the Carver Museum. Limited seating available. RSVP via EventBrite to reserve your seat. Patrons are strongly encouraged to wear masks inside of the museum and observe social distancing measures. This event is free and open to the public. Protect Your Feet When Tackling Home Improvement Projects
Did you know many home and yard projects contain hidden dangers for your feet? The good news though, according to foot and ankle surgeons, is most injuries are avoidable if you take appropriate precautions.

If an injury does occur, Dr. Shane recommends contacting a foot and ankle surgeon near you to have the injury properly examined and treated, or for serious injuries, visiting the closest emergency room.
Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS, an Orlando-area foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, sees many patients coming in with foot and ankle injuries from home improvement projects gone wrong. “Feet may be the last thing people think about while working on home improvement projects, but we see so many different types of foot and ankle injuries in our office -- many of which can be avoided with proper shoe wear and extra caution,” Dr. Shane says. Dr. Shane advises to avoid working in bare feet or in sandals when engaging in any projects around the house, even the projects that seem harmless such as power washing decks or using a ladder. According to Dr. Shane, if you’re

September 2021 Sudoku Answer Mr.Yudhveer Bagga
Now that the summer is over, and school has started it is time for fall cleaning to get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sometimes I do not know how to start the cleaning. Should it be from the first room as we enter the house, or from the kitchen or should it be the bedroom as most of the things that needs to be shoved somewhere finds a place in the walk-in-closet of the bedroom? The very thought of fall cleaning sometimes is so daunting that I want to find an excuse not to do any cleaning.
So, this time I have thought of a simple method wherein I will write everyday to attack just three tasks and see whether I can complete them and then move on to the next three tasks to complete. As an example, plan to tackle two boxes as my walk-in-closet is filled with many boxes, take just two shelves to organize and arrange in the pantry and one bookshelf in the library as I have more than 5 bookshelves and one closet in the library to tackle for three tasks rule. I do not know whether I will be successful or not but at least this is different method and so I am excited about it and looking forward to it.
Halloween
(Continued From Page 18) In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows’ Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows’ Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.
Ms. Ketika Tyagi
The word Halloween or Hallowe’en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. The word “Hallowe’en” means “Saints’ evening”. It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows’ Eve (the evening before All Hallows’ Day). In Scots, the word “eve” is even, and this is contracted to e’en or een. Over time, (All) Hallow(s) E(v)en evolved into Hallowe’en. Although the phrase “All Hallows’” is found in Old English, “All Hallows’ Eve” is itself not seen until 1556. Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as vampires, monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils.Over time, the costume selection extended to include popular characters from fiction, celebrities, and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.

individuals experiencing homelessness in Austin. With tough economic conditions due to COVID, the low-income community has also increased significantly in the last few years. An independent survey by Arushi in 2020 of the homeless and low-income community in Austin reflected inability by many respondents to avail of the services provided by City of Austin and other charitable organizations. This is mainly due to unawareness of the available service providers, and lack of availability of easy to access resources with comprehensive information on various service providers in Austin at one place. The ServiceSPOTTER app is a small step to bridge this gap using technology.
You can share your suggestions for adding any missing service provider. This app could be used by the Homeless and Low-Income Communities, local service providers, who support the homeless and low-income, and community volunteers and City of Austin Divisions who can assist to help the people in need to access the resources by using the App. The initial response to the app has been very positive. “You nailed it. This is what was needed.” Very positive responses from the users,
community, Austin City Council, and Homeless Division of City of Austin. The app has received 5-star reviews on Apple iOS App store. In the last few months, the app has already been downloaded by over 1100 users and over 5,600 locations have been accessed.

It is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian cultural sphere. Theoretically, there are four seasonal Navaratri.
For most contemporary Hindus, it is the Navaratri around the autumn equinox that is the major festival and the one observed. To Bengali Hindus and to Shakta Hindus outside of eastern and northeastern states of India, the term Navaratri implies Durga Puja in the warrior goddess aspect of Devi.
However, in practice, it is the postmonsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navaratri that is the most observed in the honor of the divine feminine Devi (Durga). The festival is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October The word Navaratri means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights In the eastern and northeastern states of India, the Durga Puja is synonymous with Navaratri, wherein goddess Durga battles and emerges victorious over the buffalo demon Mahishasur to help restore dharma. In southern states, the victory of Durga or Kali is celebrated. In all cases, the common theme is the battle and victory of good over evil based on a regionally famous epic or legend such as the Devi Mahatmya. Celebrations include worshipping nine goddesses in nine days, stage decorations, recital of the legend, enacting of the story, and chanting of the scriptures of Hinduism. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals, and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture. Hindu devotees often celebrate Navaratri by fasting. On the final day, called Vijayadashami, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as a river or ocean, or the statue sym-

In other traditions of Hinduism, the term Navaratri implies the celebration of Durga but in her more peaceful forms, such as Saraswati – the Hindu goddess of knowledge, learning, music, and other arts. In Nepal, Navaratri is called Dashain, and is a major annual homecoming and family event that cel-
ebrates the bonds between elders and youngsters with Tika Puja, as well as across family and community members. Navaratri and goddess worship is mentioned in the historic Sikhism literature, particularly in the Dasam Granth traditionally attributed to Guru Gobind Singh. According to Louis Fenech, the Sikhs have historically mirrored the reverence for Devi Shakthi and the worship of weapons in a manner similar to those by Shakta Hindus. The second Guru of Sikhism, Guru Angad, was an ardent devotee of goddess Durga. The Jains have observed the social and cultural celebrations of Navaratri with Hindus, such as the folk dances. The stavan poetry of Jainism, states M. Whitney Kelting, “draw much of their imagery from the garba poems” of Hinduism.

He is also known as the”Father of The Nation”and this title was given to him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his relentless struggles for our independence Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated yearly on 2 October. It is one of the official declared national holidays of India, observed in all of its states and territories. Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer services and tributes all over India, including at Gandhi’s memorial, Raj Ghat, in New Delhi where he was cremated. Popular activities include prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies in different cities by colleges, local government institutions and socio-political institutions.

He successfully led India’s nonviolent movement against the British, which in turn inspired many civil rights movements across the world. Gandhi had studied law and he went to South Africa to represent a client. Upon return, he joined the Indian National Congress and led nation-
wide campaigns for farmers, peasants, and labourers. He also fought against caste discrimination and fought for expanding women’s rights. He led some of the most historic movements in India’s freedom struggle. He led Indians to break the salt law, through the Dandi March in 1930, which helped Indians believe that they can challenge the might of the British. He also led the Quit India movement in 1942. Mahatma Gandhi believed in religious pluralism. He wanted India to be a secular nation and he fought to make it a reality. Gandhi was killed by nationalist Nathu Ram Godse on January 30, 1948.

Love Story Movie Review Highlights : Naga Chaitanya & Sai Pallavi Are A Delight Sekhar Kammula’s much-awaited Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi starrer Love Story finally hit screens.
Revanth (Naga Chaitanya) runs his own zumba centre & lives by the rules of hard work his mom (Eswari Rao) laid out for him.
With music by Pawan Ch, the film tells the story of two youngsters from Armoor looking to make it big in Hyderabad.
Mouni (Sai Pallavi) might be wide eyed and naive but she knows she wants to chart her own course in life. When the two join hands to make the centre a success, their passion & love might not prove to be enough.
Judgement from society, gender issues, caste disparity also follow these youngsters apart from what plagues most young people - ambition but unequal opportunities.
Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi deliver stellar performances in the
first half of the film peppered with equal parts fun & heft. Evo Evo Kalale, which sees them dancing in the rain, is an absolute pleasure in an otherwise subtle film. The first half of the film lays the foundation for everything that’s to play out in the second half. It remains to be seen if Sekhar Kammula manages to carry on the second half with equal dexterity. It’s been a year without SPB - the late legendary singer SP Balasubramanyam, who had a screen career of about 50 years, enthralled everyone as a singer, actor, composer, dubbing artist, and a filmmaker.

SPB also holds several records as a singer with his countable songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages, and he bagged the National Award for six times. He had also recorded many songs in a short time and was a favorite for many composers.

SP Balasubramanyam was an Engineering dropout, and his interest in music drove him into cinema. It stars Akshay Kumar as the lead character, with Lara Dutta, Vaani Kapoor and Huma Qureshi in other prominent roles.
He wants to not only rescue 210 passengers but also arrest the hijackers. The rest of story revolves around this covert mission to save passengers of IC 691 in Dubai.

The story of the film revolves around the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 691 that takes off from Delhi on August 24, 1984. This was fifth Indian Airlines plane hijacking in last seven years. The hijacking occurred during the administration of former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi (Lara Dutta).
