Austin Mayor Extends Moratorium July 26, Austin, TX — Today, Mayor Steve Adler issued Order No. 20200724 extending protec-
tions for residential tenants in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The moratorium on evictions is now extended through September 30, 2020. Effective immediately and continuing through September30,2020 - unless terminated or modified by
a subsequent order - Mayor Adler’s order prohibits the issuance of Notices to Vacate and the removal of property of a tenant by a property owner. The order also states it is in the public interest to prohibit the seizure of a tenant’s nonexempt property subject to a lien created under Texas Property Code Section 54.041. This Order supersedes Mayor’s Order No. 20200507-10. The orders do not forgive rent payments. Rather, they each give renters an extended period of time to pay overdue rent. (Continued On Page 26)

Eid Ul Adha: What To Do With Qurbani This Year By Sumaiya Malik @SumaiyaSaidThis
usually leave the 1/3 with them and
My neighbors are used to getting the gift of goat meat from us once a year. This happens on the day my family and I celebrate Eid ul Adha along with millions of other Muslims in the United States. According to generally accepted Islamic guidelines, if one can afford it they should order the slaughtering of a goat (Qurbani) right after Hajj (annual Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca). The goat meat is to be divided into three parts. One-third is shared with friends. One third goes to charity and one third stays in the house. This year, Eid ul Adha falls on Friday, July 31. The shops that specialize in Qurbani meat orders have streamlined the process so well that they take care of the meat for charity on their own. They already have a signup sheet for those who qualify to pick up free meat for their families. As a customer, I
bring two-thirds home. My husband and I work together to thoroughly rinse the meat and make similar sized packets in resealable bags, label and toss them in the freezer immediately. Luckily, we have a big freezer in
our laundry room (something I came to rely upon when the kids were little). Once frozen, the packets are ready for delivery to friends and neighbors. My kids and I make it into a mini road trip to deliver the meat (usually ½ lb. packets). We plan out the route and inform our friends ahead of time to make sure someone is home. Sometimes friends leave a cooler with ice outside their front door in case they are stepping out. But most are home and come out to chat and catch up quickly as we go
off to the next address. Over the years, this has become a family plan. I remember some drives were happy and others were complaints about the heat, but we have carried this on. I also soon realized that we were the only family going through this year after year. Most of our friends in similar situations would fulfil their obligation by making a donation online to an area of the world where there was greater human suffering. They reasoned that this was their way of making a small difference in the world. I have respect for their point of view as well, but my husband and I figured that our way would educate our kids and maybe spread some good will around us. This year, for the first time ever though, I too will be making a donation online as Covid-19 pandemic is creating havoc in the world.
With massive unemployment and economic downturn, I feel the entire Qurbani will best be used if donated. While I know that one goat from my end will not make a difference, I hope other Muslims will do the same. If there are 3.45 million Muslims of all ages living in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2017) thinking on the same lines as me, and a quarter of them take part in Qurbani, 862,500 goats would be donated! Now that definitely is a sizable step to help curb hunger. Local shops that take orders of Qurbani meat include World Food and Halal Market, Shahi Foods, Madina Market, and International Foods. If you prefer to make the donation online, please visit: Islamic Relief www.irusa.org Hidaya Foundation www.hidaya. org

What To Know About Back-To-School Dental Visits
As schools nationwide decide how they’ll reopen for the fall semester, it’s important to schedule your child’s dental visit to ensure they’re in good oral health.
“A back-to-school visit can help spot and take care of any issues so your child doesn’t have to miss class once school starts.
• Know what to expect: Dental visits have changed in the COVID-19 era. When making your appointment, ask about waiting room procedures, whether you can go back with your child, and other con-
For example, your dentist may be using different protective equipment like masks that cover more of their face, as well as goggles, face shields and gowns,” says Dr. Sahota.
“It may all seem strange to your child, but a conversation ahead of time can help put them at ease. Remind them that underneath the mask and shield, it’s still their same doctor.”
It’s also a great time to get back on track if some of your child’s dental habits have slipped a bit from normal routines,” says Dr. Ruchi Sahota, American Dental Association (ADA) spokesperson. According to Dr. Sahota and the experts at the ADA, here are a few things parents should keep in mind: • Schedule early: Many dentists are seeing fewer patients daily than they did before dental practices were closed earlier this year for routine visits. This is to ensure all science-based guidance and safety protocols are followed. Factor this in, and call to schedule an appointment as early as possible. This will help ensure your child gets in before school starts.
• Why matter:
siderations. “Some things at the dental office may look different, so talk to your child before the appointment and let them know these changes are in place to help keep people safe.
check-ups
Poor oral health can have a detrimental effect on a child’s quality of life and future, however prevention and early detection of dental conditions can help avoid pain, trouble eating, difficulty speaking and school absences. Keep in mind that dental issues are more common than you may think.
Tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood in the U.S., reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with about one in five children ages 5–11 having at least one untreated decayed tooth. At the appointment, ask your dentist about your child’s overall dental health, as well if he or she spotted any cavities. This is also a good time to inquire about sealants, which can reduce the risk of cavities by 80 percent. If your child plays sports, a dental appointment is also an opportunity for your dentist to check their mouth guard for wear, tear and fit. You can find a dentist near you by visiting FindaDentist.ada.org. For more dental health tips and resources, visit MouthHealthy.org. To send your child off to class with a healthy smile, it’s important to schedule a back-toschool dental visit. Not only are they required by some school districts, but they’re essential for oral and overall health. (StatePoint)
Project Connect from Capital Metro. The transit plan to help ease traffic. Project Connect is a comprehensive plan for all of Austin with a rail system that travels under downtown, an all-electric fleet to help keep the air clean and expanded, faster bus service.
A tunnel with underground rail stations. The downtown tunnel separates transit from traffic so rail vehicles can move faster, safer and more reliably for everyone.
Rail will improve the way we move around Austin. Imagine riding it to shop on South Congress, attend a game at the new soccer stadium in North Austin and visit Colony Park in East Austin. Plus, there would be a direct route to and from the airport.
New, faster routes and more options. Increased service means more routes and more connections, while additional Park & Rides will help with faster commutes. Together that means better access for people all over Austin. Visit projectconnect.com to learn more.

But there’s good news -- not only can parents impart money-smarts at home -- they can make it so fun kids won’t even realize they’re learning! “Games and toys have the power to get kids of all ages involved and passionate about any subject, leading the way to joyful, healthy relationships with different areas of learning,” says Anna Yudina, spokesperson for The Genius of Play. “Math and financial literacy are no exceptions.” Parents agree: 67 percent believe STEAM-focused toys are the primary way to encourage development

living abroad, family and friends are vital connections to life back home. For the 2020 general election, those friends can be an important source of voting information, especially for young people voting for the first time. And this year it’s even more important to register and request an absentee ballot early to avoid potential mail delays or other disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. An easy way to help loved ones in the military or abroad vote absentee is by referring them to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), which provides tools and re-
sources to ensure that American citizens can vote from anywhere in the world. Voters can visit FVAP. gov to find state-by-state official registration and ballot request deadlines, as well as information on completing a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), which is the registration and ballot request form, and the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB), the backup ballot.
This can also be played using dolls or action figures as characters, and tokens from a board game as the merchandise. Have your child be the customer by handing them a set amount of money (real or play bills) to start with, so that they must budget accordingly to buy only what they can afford.
Playing store is easy. First, create the inventory using toy foods or pantry supplies, setting a price for each item.
Then, swap roles so that your child has a turn tallying the cost of items you bring to the counter.

Using the FPCA provides our Service members, their families and overseas citizens with an option to receive balloting materials electronically. 3. Using the FPCA early grants voters the ability to use the FWAB as a backup ballot, if needed.

Many toy cash registers even feature functional calculators, giving kids some practice with a vital learning tool.
Toys promoting hands-on exploration can strengthen numerical processing that’s necessary for financial literacy. Try games providing a fast-paced mental workout, such as Jacks, Connect 4 and Backgammon. • Have a Game Night: Board games offer the opportunity to develop a variety of fundamental skills, including arithmetic and risk management. The next time family game night rolls around, consider breaking out a money management classic, such as Monopoly, to practice counting, saving and budgeting. • Make Saving a Game: Saving may not automatically appeal to kids at first, so create challenges and games offering rewards. For example, propose a one-time doubled allowance after successfully completing a “No Spending Week Challenge.” Or, demonstrate how quickly money can add up by having kids put all the change they receive in their piggy bank (versus spending it). Then, at the end of the month, have them open the piggy bank and count up their savings! For more games that teach real life skills, head over to TheGeniusofPlay.org. Great Ways To Beat Summer Brain Drain
Summer brain drain is real, and this year’s pandemic has only exacerbated the problem.

To keep your kids from getting bored while helping them expand their world, incorporate these cool ideas into those long summer days: • At-home tourism: Many museums and historical sites have ramped up their online exhibitions and interactive features, making a range of programming available to would-be visitors from the safety of their homes. And much of this content is geared toward school-age kids. This can be a great way to spend a rainy day learning something new. • Music-making: New skills can provide kids with confidence at a time when activities like team sports and theater programs are not possible. Learning an instrument can also lay a foundation for academic success. Check out Casiotone keyboards, which can make learning to play even more fun. Its Dance Music Mode feature divides the keyboard into instrument sections like drums,
dance music using 50 built-in styles, as well as familiar effects like stutter and filter. • STEM exploration: At-home science kits offer kids unplugged, hands-on learning experiences and the opportunity to imagine their room is a real laboratory.
Be sure to also check out cool online resources that help kids strengthen their math skills. For example, Casio Cares, a remote learning site offering projects, educational videos, math lessons and self-paced webinars, can be a vital summer tool for students who want to start strong in STEM this fall. • Summer reading challenge:
Many local libraries and school districts host summer reading challenges. Check these out or create your very own. No matter how the challenge works, by participating, kids will likely discover that reading is its own reward. • Movie magic: Using just a smartphone and some simple editing software, children can learn to shoot and edit their own films. Celebrate their accomplishments while taking advantage of summer evenings by screening the films in the backyard with a Casio Projector, which offers easy set-up and the ability to transition from daytime to nighttime viewing. Beating summer brain drain is possible. With a little creativity and the use of new tools, families can keep kids engaged during the dog days of summer for a stronger start to the school year. 4 Home Maintenance Tips To Keep The Outdoors Outside Even avid nature lovers will agree that not all aspects of the outdoors belong inside one’s home. While bugs, mud and allergens will sneak their way into interior spaces, the steps you take to manage these elements can keep your home more comfortable. Contain Allergens Your home should provide a respite from outdoor allergens. Unfortunately, pollen has a tendency to stick to skin, hair, shoes and clothes. Contain allergens by removing outerwear when you get home. If you spent the day in a grassy or forested area, you may also want to change your clothes or even take a shower before sitting on furniture. As far as cleaning is concerned, regularly shake out your welcome mat outside and away from the front door. Also, make a habit of regularly laundering items that touch your eyes, ears and nose most frequently, such as bedding and towels.
Combat Insect Invaders
According to the Smithsonian Institution, there are over 200 million insects for each human on the planet! That’s a lot of critters, and despite your best efforts, some of them are going to enter your home, especially during peak bug season. With the National Pest Management Association’s bug barometer calling for high pest pressure from ants, roaches, mosquitoes and more this season, having a smart way to deal with insect invaders is a good idea.
for effective solutions made without harsh chemicals. For example, Zevo Insect Killer Sprays with BioSelective Technology work on a broad range of household insects, including ants, roaches, flies, fruit flies, gnats and spiders. The active essential oils in Zevo target nerve receptors vital to insects, not people or pets. Easy to use, just spray on pests, then wipe up the dead bugs, as well as any excess product. Leaving only a light scent of essential oils, Zevo lets you get on with your day after use, and is available online or in-store at Target and Home Depots nationwide. pair never leaves the house. Have a dog? Wipe paws clean when you get home from walks, or better yet, try dog boots, which have the added bonus of protecting paws from sharp objects, hot pavement and other road hazards. Banish Excess Moisture Too much moisture indoors is bad news. Damp spaces can promote growth and spread of viruses, bacteria and bugs, according to the American Lung Association. To keep your home’s interiors dry, fix up any leaks and keep humidity levels at 50 percent or less by adjusting controls on your air conditioner and/or by running a dehumidifier. The Institute of Medicine cites good ventilation and moisture control as ways to help limit both mold and bug problems. With a few simple measures, you can manage all those peskier aspects of nature you’d rather not have indoors. (StatePoint)

Cross-Bore: What Every Homeowner Should Know In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, learning about cross-bore is important, as certain lifestyle changes you may have made over the past few months could turn an existing cross-bore condition into a potentially dangerous situation. Fortunately, unlike many items on your list of concerns these days, cross-bore is something that you can do something about besides just worry. So, what is a “cross-bore” is and why is it
years of unplugged creativity and pencilfree drawing. Here is a brief look at the history and major milestones of this iconic red-framed drawing toy:
Spin Master achieved a Guinness World Record title for the most amount of people drawing on an Etch A Sketch globally at the same time.
• 1955: French electrician, André Cassangnes came up with the idea to create a drawing toy when he made pencil marks on a decal and noticed that the image transferred to the opposite face.
• 2020: To-date, 175 million Etch A Sketches have been sold in multiple variations, styles and colors. To shake things up, Etch A Sketch joined forces earlier this year with other iconic brands and names for a series of limited edition variations of the toy, including MONOPOLY, NASA-inspired, Rubik’s and Stan Lee editions. To mark the milestone anniversary, Spin Master has made these shake-to-erase collectors items available at Walmart and Walmart.com, while supplies last.
• 1959: Paul Chaze, owner of a smaller plastic injection molding company, agreed to invest in the product and produce the official tooling. The product was originally called “Telecran,” based on the recent availability of TV sets in France. • 1960: Cassangnes collaborated with Jerry Burger of the Ohio Art Co. to perfect the system still incorporated into the Etch A Sketch today. They shipped more than 600,000 units in the spring, and it was the number one Christmas toy that year.

important for you to know about it? Simply put, a “cross-bore” is the unintended intersection of two utility lines. This article is concerned specifically with natural gas utility and unpressurized sanitary sewer lines, both of which you likely have on your property. An “unintended intersection,” means the penetration of a sanitary sewer line by a gas utility line. According to the Cross Bore Safety Association, this is not an uncommon condition and, although statistics vary, some estimates suggest that it occurs at an average rate of 0.4 cross-bores per mile of sewer line. So how does it happen? Cross-bores most frequently occur in association with “trenchless” methods of utility line installation. In other words, it involves installing a utility line without digging up the ground. The reasons for doing this typically involve minimizing surface disruption, increasing the speed of installation, and reducing costs. The downside to this method is that histor-
ically, installers have not been able see when the installed utility line penetrates a sanitary sewer line. The immediate result is typically uneventful, until the affected sewer line becomes blocked. As far back as 1976, there have been documented incidents of attempts to clear blocked sewer lines where there is an undiscovered cross-bore. The resulting rupture of the intersecting gas utility line by some mechanical device, like a root-cutter, allows gas to enter a home through the sewer where it is accidentally ignited, causing an explosion. As the existence of cross-bores has become better understood, steps are being taken to eliminate existing cross-bores, and to prevent them from occurring at all. Still, many “legacy” crossbores remain. If you’ve been wondering what all of this has to do with the coronavirus pandemic and home quarantine, it’s this: More people at home for more hours means more sanitary sewer use, and the scarcity of toilet paper means more people using alternative materials that are not designed to degrade in a sanitary sewer environment. The inevitable result? More blocked sewer lines. According to experts, here’s the part where you can make a difference – one that can actually save lives. First, be mindful to put only toilet paper into the sewer. Second, in the event you have trouble with your sewer line, make sure your plumber uses a camera to visualize any blockage before attempting to remove it. To see what a cross-bore looks like, and to learn more about excavation safety, visit SafeExcavator.com/cross-bore. Now you know about cross-bores and how, as a homeowner, to deal safely with a potential cross-bore situation. (StatePoint)

Judge Dimple Malhotra is the first and only Asian American female Judge in Travis County. She emerged as a clear winner in the Democratic runoff on July 14 for Travis County Court at Law #4 with 55% of the votes. Malhotra comes to the prestigious position of Judge with perseverance, compassion and empathy, along with a desire to serve the community. Her term will last four years. Judge Dimple Malhotra’s life is a living example of the American Dream. Born in India, she moved to the US with her parents at a young age — her mother arriving first to work as a nurse. Malhotra attended UT Austin for
and her husband, who she met at UT Law, to California in 1998 only to return to Austin in 2004. Throughout, she worked in nonprofits or for the government and accumulated years of experience dealing with domestic violence and family abuse cases. The Travis County Court Judge Malhotra presides over is a specialty court that deals almost exclusively in misdemeanor domestic violence cases.
The court also oversees a diversion program for people charged with prostitution called Phoenix Court. The day after her election, Sumaiya Malik of Austin South Asian spoke with Malhotra about her candidacy and future plans as a judge: SM: Congratulations on the big win! Could you tell us more about your role? JDM: Thank you! The Travis County Court is a civil court which hears bench trials and jury trials. It is a specialty court which hears misdemeanor and domestic violence cases. I handle a docket of 3K to 4K cases of domestic violence every year. I
preside over the protective order docket.
I hear those who say they have experienced assault harassment. There are hearings on Fridays. This hasn’t stopped [even in time of Covid-19 pandemic]. Violence has [in fact] increased in pandemic. [I also oversee] the Phoenix Court – Whenever participants are arrested for prostitution, we address the issues leading to prostitution. Prostitution is a form of human trafficking. We need to address prostitution and victims of sexual assault at a young age. SM: How did you start working for the government? JDM: My career in the government started as a non-profit staff attorney at the Women’s Advocacy Project.
[Later] I ended up at the Travis County Attorney’s office in the prosecutor position, handling new arrests related to family violence cases. Eventually I became Chief Prosecutor and then Head of family violence cases.

Face Masks: Myths, Facts And Social Pressures (Continued From Page 01) Reading that in print myself helped me confirm an opinion under discussion in chat groups and between friends where people are showing skepticism about the importance of wearing masks citing studies and news articles from untrustworthy sources.
care about your loved ones, your friends and your city. In fact, the ones who think they
don’t care about wearing face masks and put pressure on others are actually doing a disservice to themselves and those around them. Such people wonder why face masks weren’t recommended at the start of the pandemic. According to Mayo Clinic, “At that time, experts didn’t know the extent to which people with COVID-19 could spread the virus before symptoms appeared. Nor was it known that some people have COVID-19 but don’t have any symptoms.
In fact, comments like, “Aren’t you being too careful?” or “We don’t care about masks!” are making it harder for those who do practice care. Those experiencing social pressure should feel at ease because scientific facts with real data on reputable cites online tells us that the advantages of wearing a face mask are far greater, less risky and of vital importance if you genuinely

Fact: Different types of masks serve different purposes, but cloth masks are highly effective for the general public. The average person who is not working in a medical environment with COVID-19 patients should wear a cloth mask to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers. Myth: Masks can cause carbon dioxide (CO2) build-up. Fact: Some people have suggested that carbon dioxide from exhaling gets trapped under the cloth and can make you sick. This isn’t true. Properly fitted masks offer adequate airflow while still covering your nose and mouth. This makes the accumulation of carbon dioxide impossible. However, people with breathing problems, children under age 2, and those who can’t remove the mask without assistance should not wear one. Myth: If you’ve had coronavirus, you don’t need a mask. Fact: If you’ve had a coronavirus before or had an antibody test come up positive, you may believe that you don’t need to wear a mask.
While most teams are expected to reach UAE by August 20, CSK could head there in the second week of August to acclimatise to conditions and prepare for the tournament. CSK were the runners-up last season, having lost to Mumbai Indians in a thrilling final. Interestingly, CSK had kick-started their preparations early in March this year be-

Unfortunately, at this time, there is no way to know whether having coronavirus once provides immunity from the virus again or how long that your immunity might last. This means that you could potentially catch the disease again and spread it to others. Myth: You don’t need to wear a mask outside. Fact: At this time, being outside is generally considered safer than being inside.
When taking a stroll or participating in other outdoor activities by yourself or with people you live with, a mask isn’t required. However, when you find it difficult to maintain at least six feet of distance from people you don’t live with – such as passing someone on a sidewalk or eating out at a restaurant – it’s important to have your mask on. You should always have your mask on hand when you leave your home. The CDC recommends that you wear a cloth face mask when you’re around people who don’t live with you and in public settings when social distancing is difficult. Here are a few pointers for putting on and taking off a cloth mask: • Wash or sanitize your hands before and after putting on and taking off your mask. • Place your mask over your mouth and nose. • Tie it behind your head or use ear loops and make sure it’s snug. • Don’t touch your mask while wearing it. • If you accidentally touch your mask, wash or sanitize your hands. • If your mask becomes wet or dirty, switch to a clean one. Put the used mask in a sealable bag until you can wash it. • Remove the mask by untying it or lifting off the ear loops without touching the front of the mask or your face. • Wash your hands immediately after removing your mask. • Regularly wash your mask with soap and water by hand or in the washing machine. It’s fine to launder it with other clothes.

South Asian Muslims Join Emgage Action’s Zoom Summit With Presidential Hopeful Joe Biden
By Sumaiya Malik @SumaiyaSaidThis
and ELANA SCHOR, apnews. com)
For a few months now, EMGAGE Action, a prominent Muslims PAC that supports issues that are of importance to underrepresented communities, with a specific focus on American Muslims throughout the United States started actively reaching out to Texas Muslims (a large number of whom are South Asians) through Zoom as a part of a grass roots community leaders effort to mobilize Muslims to vote for Democratic Presidential hopeful Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential elections in November.
Two months ago, on the occasion
Farooq Mitha, senior adviser for Muslim engagement with Biden’s campaign, said reaching out to Muslim American voters is a priority for Biden, pointing to his own appointment as an example. The campaign has hosted events with Muslim Americans and met with community leaders over the past months, he said. (MARIAM FAM
of Eid ul Fitr, Biden’s wife Jill addressed Muslims through Zoom to wish them on the blessed day and to call them to action. But con-
versation was now about where is Biden himself. Emgage Action had specifically requested Biden to directly engage with the Muslims in the US when the PAC had endorsed his candidacy on April 20th this year. Their initial endorsement had been for Bernie Sanders who had actively advocated for the Muslims. Keeping his promise to Emgage Action, Vice President Joe Biden, addressed about three thousand Muslims on July 20th through Zoom in a summit titled “Million Muslim Votes,” to emphasize Muslim turnout in November. In his live address he said, “I want to earn your vote not just because he’s not worthy of being president,” the presumptive presidential nominee told participants. “I want to work in partnership with you, make sure your
voices are included in the decisionmaking process as we work to rebuild our nation.” Biden also reiterated a pledge to overturn a Trump administration ban on travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries, calling it “vile.” (NYTimes). Dressed sharp in a navy-blue blazer, pin striped white shirt and an American flag on his lapel, Biden looked straight at the camera and quoted Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). He wished more about Islam was taught in schools and hoped that the millions of Muslims in the United States would stand by him in the November elections. This was a historic call because while Muslim vote has been pursued by previous presidential hopefuls, this is the first time a candidate has addressed the group directly. In Austin, the reaction has been positive. Austin’s South Asian Muslim community in particular has been in conversation with Emgage Action to educated themselves and understand Biden’s approach. Wa’el
Alzayat, CEO of Emgage Action, said by email that the organization was seeking to maximize Muslim American turnout in key battleground states. In Michigan alone — one of the states where the organization has chapters and where Trump won in 2016 by fewer than 11,000 votes — he said he believed there are more than 150,000 registered Muslim voters. Several prominent Muslim American elected officials endorsed Biden for president in a letter organized by Emgage Action ahead of the summit. Among those who signed are Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (who actually was in Austin last year in Ramadan), Minnesota Atorney General Keith Ellison and Indian Rep. Andre Carson, who are all Democrats. Emgage Action’s activities focus in the District of Columbia, Florida, Michigan, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Texas. For more information please visit: https://emgageaction. org/

As representatives of the Network of Asian American Organizations (known as NAAO) in Austin Texas, we express our profound concern and unwavering solidarity with all who mourn the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, David McAtee, and countless other victims. This reminds us of a long history of unjust criminalization and inhumane treatment of Black Americans by law enforcement. These horrific incidents also remind us that police brutality and systemic racism are pervasive and need major reform. The time
has come and is long overdue to address oppression, racial inequities, and institutional racism. We, as an Asian community, stand on the shoulders of the Black civil rights activists that came before us. Our liberation is tied with the liberation of Black people. Until there is justice for Black lives, there can be no justice for us all. Our community is deeply moved by and supports peaceful protests to advance justice and racial equity. We believe strongly that all voices should be heard, and that diversity in thought and opinion ultimately leads to the best outcome for all. Everyone Can Help Stop The Spread of COVID-19, Here’s How As businesses and services reopen nationwide, the death toll from COVID-19 continues to rise, and experts warn that Americans must continue taking precautions to help stop the spread of the virus. “In states across the country, the spread of COVID-19 is staggering and concerning. We all have a role to play in stopping the spread and protecting ourselves, our family and our neighbors,” says Susan R. Bailey, M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “The science is clear. We know what stops the spread of the virus – wearing cloth face masks, physical distancing and regularly washing hands -- and it is on all of us to practice these steps. Without a vaccine for this novel
virus, the only way to turn the tide and recapture a sense of normal is by working together.” The AMA offers the following guidance and insights that can help keep you, your friends and your loved ones healthy and safe. • Wear a cloth face mask: Take the simple steps that science
has shown will help stop the spread of the virus: wearing a cloth face mask, maintaining physical distancing and washing your hands. The simplest tried-and-true methods are still the most important. • Keep up with doctor visits: Before you decide to forgo routine care or screenings, talk to your

Physicians are using telehealth services and have taken painstaking precautions to make their practices safe.
• Take time to clear your head and rest:
Make sure you keep up with your vaccines, and don’t let something that in normal circumstances could be handled with an early visit to your physician land you in the hospital. • Be mindful that re-opening is not the same as a return to normal: When indoors, wear a mask, even in restaurants and stores that are open. Consider dining outdoors whenever possible. Stay connected with friends and family, but do so in a physicallydistant and safe manner, including small outdoors gatherings where
With many people working from home or working under more stressful conditions, it is important to take mental health breaks. Get up and move, take a walk outside, step away from the computer, and take days or hours off from work. As the death toll from COVID-19 continues to rise, physicians, nurses, hospital and health system leaders, researchers and public health experts want Americans to know that it is within their power to help stop the spread of the virus. Life insurance can be more than just a death benefit, with some types of policies offering income replacement for unforeseen events. It can also protect your financial security from the impact of taxes, market volatility and longevity. It’s not just for individuals and families either, but businesses too. • Protect Your Paycheck. Go beyond health insurance and look at disability, accident and critical illness coverages, especially those available through your employer, to prevent income gaps and keep you from paying out of pocket for covered expenses. • Add Protection to Your Portfolio. Consider diversifying your portfolio with an annuity. It can provide protected growth and monthly lifetime income for a portion of your portfolio – to help cover expenses in retirement and ensure you have a stream of income throughout retirement. • Reimagine Your Retirement Plan. Wharton Study Reveals How Pandemic Lockdown Is Affecting Indian Homes A University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business-led study analyzed how households in India are coping with the lockdown measures in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

India has extended its nationwide lockdown in containment areas through June.
In the short term, she called for the government to focus on preventing malnutrition, and continuing to provide maternal and child health services, such as vaccinations.
According to the Johns Hopkins University’s dashboard, as of June 8, India was seventh on the list of countries with the most infections with 258,090 positive cases and 7,263 deaths, the university report notes.
In the medium term, the top challenge will be to revive the economy.
But also compelling is the pile-up of economic misery the lockdown has wrought. In the latest quarter ended April 20, India’s GDP grew the slowest in 11 years at 3.1 percent, and is expected to contract by 6.8 percent in the current fiscal year, the report notes. The economic distress in India caused by the lockdown is dire. Nearly 84 percent of Indian households are seeing decreases in income since the lockdown began, according to a recent study by experts at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago and the Mumbai-based Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy, titled “How Are Indian Households Coping Under the Covid-19 Lockdown? 8 Key Findings.” The study found a “sharp and broad negative impact on household income” as the pandemic diminished their staying capacity. Nearly a third of all households will not be able to survive beyond a week without additional assistance, it stated. That harsh statistic finds corroboration in the unemployment rate, which had crossed 27 percent in early May, up nearly four-fold from levels in January-February, according to CMIE data, the report notes. The jobless rate has since dropped to less than 24 percent, it added.

The fall in incomes affected people in the lower and middle segments of the income distribution most severely, the study found. Households in the lowest of the five income groups had average monthly per-capital earnings of less than Rs. 3,800 (about $50), while those at the high end made between Rs. 12,374 and upwards of Rs. 1 lakh ($167 to $1,370 and more), according to the report. Households in the middle-income groups are hurt disproportionately more perhaps because they are most likely to be dependent on sources of income that are hit due to the lockdown, the study’s authors stated. Rural households have seen disproportionately more distress than those in urban India during the lockdowns.
percent of rural households, compared to 75 percent at urban households, the study found. Higher-income households in urban India have shown more “resilience” than their rural counterparts. That is because working out of home is possible for many urban jobs, and therefore they are “relatively protected,” the authors noted, according to the report.

Only 30 percent of households are able to survive one month or more without additional assistance. “Crucially, 14% of the sample is already out of funds and risks immediate and severe deprivation if they are unable to borrow or receive additional benefits,” the report warned. “Rapid distribution of in-kind or cash transfers is needed to prevent a sharp increase in malnutrition and severe deprivation. Such transfers will also likely promote a more robust recovery as the country is able to reopen,” it said. The Indian government has announced three rounds of stimulus programs totaling nearly Rs. 21 trillion ($266 billion). That includes a Rs. 7.2 trillion liquidity package the Reserve Bank of India had unveiled in February
early July, and the space agency posted the image of the planet on Thursday. “Hubble’s sharp view resolves the finely etched concentric ring structure,” wrote NASA, noting the rings are composed of chunks of ice “ ranging from tiny grains to giant boulders.” Hubble orbits about 340 miles above Earth, and the telescope captured this detailed view of Saturn while the planet orbited 839 million miles from Earth.
Sharp images of the gas giant allow planetary scientists to observe the planet’s changing atmosphere. For example, NASA researchers spotted a “slight reddish haze” o v e r Saturn’s north polar region, p o s sibly indicating a changing atmosphere or heating by the sun. “It’s amazing that even over a few years, we’re seeing seasonal changes on Saturn,” Amy Simon, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement. Amid the stark black background of space, Hubble also captured two of Saturn’s 53 confirmed moons: the ice-spraying Enceladus below, and the Death Star-like Mimas on the right.

4 Steps For Developing A Thoughtful Estate Plan Many people may avoid estate planning because they think it can be put off until later in life.

But experts agree that adults of any age should have a plan in place to make sure their financial affairs are in order after they pass on, or in case they are incapacitated.
They let you continue managing your property and make changes to the trust terms during your lifetime, and they allow property to pass to your beneficiaries without a court proceeding. • Write a Will and End-of-Life Documents:
A complete and thoughtful estate plan covers more than who will get what -- it helps to ease the burden on your family and beneficiaries by documenting your wishes and instructions.
Your will governs who will receive property not otherwise designated by titling, the terms of a trust, or by beneficiary designation (such as on retirement accounts or insurance policies).
Here are the four major steps involved in developing an estate plan:
Other end-of-life documents might include a living will dictating what should or should not be done to keep you alive, or a simple letter regarding how you would like to be laid to rest.
• Inventory and Determine Asset Value: Account for any and all items you can make decisions about -- including financial assets, real estate and even intangible property such as patents or copyrights.
• Choose Your Beneficiaries and Decision Makers:
ligations, and ensuring your wishes are carried out.
These designations are crucial to estate planning. Beneficiaries -- the recipients of your funds, trusts or property -- are typically a spouse, child, relative or friend. They can be decision makers, too.
• Consider Setting Up a Revocable Trust:
Choose someone responsible who
Revocable trusts give you an added layer of control and privacy over your assets that is not possible when assets are left directly to beneficiaries.
Keep all of your finalized, original estate planning documents in one location so they don’t get lost and make several copies to store in a different location, such as a safe deposit box.
Remember that keeping your estate plan up to date is necessary to preserve your future wishes and prevent your loved ones from experiencing unnecessary stress. Experts recommend that you review your estate plan annually or biannually to ensure it is current, and update it as major life events occur, such as marriage, divorce or the birth of a child. You may want to consult a Certified Financial Planner professional to bring the different parts of your estate together into a plan that represents your wishes. Estate planning may not be fun, but designing a plan now will help provide the best outcome for your family and friends when you are no longer with them. (StatePoint)
Cinnamon Can Help Stabilise Blood Sugar Level In Borderline Diabetics, Claims New Study For most diabetic patients, managing their blood sugar levels is a real challenge. They have to follow several precautionary measures on a daily basis to keep their blood sugar in check. In this process, they even have to cut down on the intake of varied food items that are considered bad for them.
The study was published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, as per which having a small amount of cinnamon or cinnamon capsule three times a day can help to lower the fasting glucose level

We are talking about cinnamon, the aromatic flavouring additive, which is used in a wide variety of sweet and savoury dishes. The spice is made from the inner bark of Cinnamomum tree and has been widely popular for its medicinal properties.
Understanding the relationship between food and blood sugar level can help to make informed choices about what to eat and when to eat.
Cinnamon gets its distinct aroma from a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which is present in the spice in large amounts.
We know that the food items that we consume on a daily basis have several medicinal properties and increasing their intake can keep chronic diseases like diabetes at bay. As per a study published in a journal a few days back, there is a specific spice available in your kitchen that can help to stabilise the blood sugar level in diabetic patients.
Researchers believe that most of cinnamon’s powerful effects on health and metabolism are due to the presence of this compound. and decrease the spike in the blood sugar level after having a meal. The study was carried out on 51 prediabetic participants, who were

Simple Ways To Soothe Your Teething Baby
Caring for a baby can be very rewarding. It can also be exhausting. Along with those amazing firstyear milestones can arise teething misery that disrupts the entire household.

While teething can be stressful for child and parents alike, these recommendations can help you naturally ease your baby’s discomfort:
Contact with cold items can have a soothing effect. Offer cold foods, teething rings and washcloths. Stick with chilled, not frozen
Having a better understanding of what to expect and some smart strategies for relieving your baby’s discomfort can make the process smoother.
Because teething may cause your baby to drool excessively, it can also be the indirect cause of skin irritation. Dry your baby’s chin regularly. Then, apply soothing calendula cream. Absorbent sheets can help manage the problem overnight and during naps.
What to Expect While most babies teethe around six months, that first tooth can appear any time between three and 14 months. Teeth typically come in pairs, starting with the bottom front two, followed by the top front two. Your baby’s primary pearly whites should be completely in by age 3. Many babies show early signs when a tooth is on the way. In a study published in Pediatrics in 2000, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation followed 125 children from their 3-month checkup through their first birthday and found that during teething, there was a notable increase in biting, drooling, gum rubbing, sucking, irritability, wakefulness, ear rubbing, facial rash, decreased appetite for solid food and mild temperature.
According to Dr. Redcross, “When the tooth moves through the bone and gum, it tends to come in stages, with more activity at night, so a baby may be more irritable at bedtime.”
“The pressure of an emerging tooth beneath the gums may be relieved by counter pressure,” says Dr. Ken Redcross, primary care physician and founder of Redcross Concierge. He recommends massaging your baby’s gums with a moistened gauze pad or washcloth.

Teething toys allow your baby to ease discomfort on their own. Firm rubber teething rings are a good choice, as they’re unlikely to break from the pressure of your baby’s

Temple to Sikhs in Quetta
QUETTA, Pakistan — A 200-yearold Sikh temple that served as a school for Muslim girls for seven decades was returned to the Sikh community in Quetta, enabling them to worship there for the first time in 73 years, officials said July 23. The temple stood empty for a year or two when most Sikhs left Pakistan for neighboring India after the British partitioned the subcontinent into separate nations in 1947, following two centuries of colonial rule. Under the government’s guardianship, a school was later set up in the temple building, which remained functional until recently, when Sikhs won a legal battle to have the property returned, temple custodian Govind Singh said. He said Sikhs living in Quetta were de-

lighted to get back to their temple. “This is the best gift for us. We are grateful to Pakistan and the judiciary for giving it back to us,” local Sikh leader Jasbir Singh said. “For us, it is like a dream come true.” Singh spoke as jubilant members of the Sikh community, adhering to social distancing rules to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, gathered at the temple to worship. The temple could not be returned to the Sikhs earlier because of a lingering legal battle between local Sikhs and the provincial government, Singh said. Abdullah Khilji, an official at the education department in Baluchistan, said hundreds of schoolgirls who were studying at the temple building were relocated to a nearby school where they have since adjusted. The development comes at a time when Pakistan’s tiny Hindu minority is facing resistance from Muslim activists for attempting to build a temple in the capital. Initially, the government approved its construction, but then reversed the decision after Muslims objected. A council of clerics is currently deliberating whether the temple’s construction should be allowed. However, there has been no other resistance to the construction or renovation of Sikh temples in Pakistan, where the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has supported the construction of one of the largest Sikh shrines to Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, which is known as Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. It’s the second-holiest place in the Sikh faith and is located on the Ravi River just 4.5 kilometers (3 miles) from Pakistan’s border with India. Currently, no Indian Sikhs are visiting shrines in Pakistan because of a travel ban imposed by their government to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has also caused 5,709 deaths and 269,191 infections across Pakistan.

They found that, depending on weather conditions, some respiratory droplets travel between eight feet and 13 feet away from their source before evaporating, without even accounting for wind.
The research team led by Abhishek Saha developed this new model to better understand the role that droplet clouds play in the spread of respiratory viruses, the study, published in the journal Physics of Fluids. Their model is the first to be based on a fundamental approach taken to study chemical reactions called collision rate theory, which looks at the interaction and collision rates of a droplet cloud exhaled by an infected person with healthy people. AKBAR AND BIRBAL STORIES The Other Guest
Once, a rich man invited Birbal for dinner. When Birbal arrived at the man’s house, he noticed that there were several people already present. “Oh, I didn’t know you had invited so many other guests.” “No sir, Birbal. These are not guests, but my employees who are joining me for dinner tonight. But one among them is a guest just like you. Can you guess who?” said the man with a smile. “Please tell them a joke, and I will tell you who the guest is,” replied Birbal. The man told a joke, and all the guests in the house burst into laughter. “That man over there is the other guest,” Birbal said pointing towards a man.
“Yes! He is the one. But how did you guess it?” the amazed host asked. “The joke you said was not so funny. Still, everyone laughed. But the guest only smiled, and that is how I could identify him,” replied the smart Birbal.

Google Announces $10 Billion ‘Digitization’ Fund For India
This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of the country and its digital economy, says CEO Sundar Pichai. Technology giant Google will invest $10 billion (₹75,000 crore) in
India over the next five-seven years with a focus on digitising the economy and building India-first products and services, its CEO Sundar Pichai said.
Austin Mayor Extends Moratorium on Residential Evictions (Continued From Page 01) On July 22, 2020, Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe issued County Judge Order No. 2020-15 relating to Notices to Vacate and Eviction Proceedings in response to COVID-19. This order also extended the prohibition of eviction proceedings to September 30, 2020. There are eviction prevention and homeless programs for City of Austin residents that support low-income tenants with legal assistance, emergency grants for rent or utilities, alternate housing, short-term motel vouchers, or placement in a local shelter. Travis County has numerous online resources for tenants facing eviction, as do the county’s Justice of the Peace Precinct Offices. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office provides a concise brochure for Evictions and Lease Terminations. A more extensive description of tenant rights in Travis County can be found through the Travis
This extended period which gives time on hand be it from not commuting to work or not attending parties or socializing only through long distance has taught me one thing which I think will cultivate and will become a second habit as breathing to me. Since I do save on time by not commuting one has time to reflect on one’s behavior and also the happenings of the day. This has taught me that life is so short to have regrets in later life and that one should spend each day at least for a hour or more doing what one would love to do. It may be as simple as learning something new like a song or an instrument or even as simple as learning to recite their favorite poem or prayer. One can learn to draw or

Make A Difference - Learning By Vidya Kumar
Speaking at the company’s annual event, Mr. Pichai, also the CEO of Alphabet (Google’s parent firm) said, “We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, part-
paint or even knit or sew anything that they like to do. So when I go to bed and muse on the day’s happening it always brings a smile to my face when I think that I spent at least some time trying to learn a new prayer and so I feel that my time has not been squandered away with just the routine work and not being productive. Maybe, as days become weeks and then into months I can reflect and be proud that I have learnt something new. Any learning keeps the mind engaged and it is an activity which helps in improving the brain function and thus keeps us healthy. What better way to keep ourselves engaged and joyful and be healthy in mind and body? Start learning anything that holds one’s interest.
nerships and operational, infrastructure and ecosystem investments. This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of India and its digital economy.” Focus on four areas He said the investment will focus on four areas important to digitization including enabling affordable access and information for every Indian in their own language, building products and services that are deeply relevant to India’s unique needs, empowering businesses in their digital transformation journey and leveraging technology and AI for social good, in areas like health, education, and agriculture. With today’s announcement, Google becomes the latest U.S.-based technology firm to commit investments in India. In April, social networking major Facebook bought 9.9% stake in Jio Platform for ₹43,573.62 crore, while ecommerce giant Amazon had in January announced $1 billion investment over five years to help digitise small and medium busi-

In his address at the event, Minister for Communications and IT Ravi Shankar expressed hope that with this new Fund, Google will focus on promoting Indian startups further. Interaction with Prime Minister The Indian born Google CEO also spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conference. Mr. Modi tweeted that the interaction with Mr. Pichai was “extremely fruitful” and they spoke on a wide range of subjects, particularly leveraging the power of technology to transform the lives of farmers, youngsters and entrepreneurs. “During our interaction, @sundarpichai and I spoke about the new work culture that is emerging in the times of COVID-19. We discussed the challenges the global pandemic has brought to areas such as sports. We also talked about the importance of data security and cyber safety,” the Prime Minister said. During his address, Mr. Pichai said, “When I was young, every new piece of technology brought new opportunities to learn and grow. But I always had to wait for it to ar-
rive from some place else. People in India no longer have to wait for technology to come to you. whole new generation of technologies are happening in India first.” He said the global pandemic has supercharged the adoption of digital tools. Digital payments, for example, have enabled families across India to access goods and services during lockdowns. Mr. Pichai said, “There’s no question we are facing a difficult moment today, in India and around the world. The dual challenges to our health and economies have forced us to rethink how we work and how we live. But times of challenge can lead to incredible moments of innovation. “Our goal is to ensure India not only benefits from the next wave of innovation, but leads it. Working together we can ensure that our best days are still ahead.” Substantial amount in digital transformation Mr. Prasad said, “India today is seeking to transform the life of Indians with the power of technology, and I am very happy that Google is rising to the occasion by trying to invest a fairly substantial amount in the digital transformation. This emphasises upon digital inclusion and overcoming the digital divide.” He said there is immense scope for Google to deploy Artificial Intelligence and undertake new initiatives in agriculture, weather prediction, healthcare in the wake of the COVID-19 challenges and most importantly in digital education. “Today, India’s app economy is growing very powerfully, but we must not just download apps. It is important also to upload apps from India. I am sure with this new Fund, Google will also focus on promoting our startups further,” he said. (Courtesy: https://www.thehindu. com/)
