3 Things Everyone Living With Arthritis Should Know Arthritis includes more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect joints. If you are living with arthritis, here are a few things you should consider. 1. Arthritis can affect people of all ages. Many people think of arthritis as an affliction that only affects adults as they reach old age or athletes who have suffered an injury (known as osteoarthritis). Although the incidence of arthritis does increase with age, younger people can also be affected by the disease. Autoimmune forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, often strike people by the time they are middle-aged. Overall, it’s estimated that nearly onefourth of all adults in the United States (22.7 percent, 54.4 million) have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Seven percent of 18-44 year olds and 29 percent of 45-64 year olds report doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

2. You can now track your condition better and get support. Being diagnosed with a lifelong, chronic disease like arthritis can be over-

In healthy joints, cartilage covers the ends of bones, allowing them to move smoothly and without pain. When arthritis (all forms) wears away or damages the protective cartilage, and other non-surgical treatments have proved unsuccessful, joint replacement (usually of the knee or the hip) is typically recommended, according to the American College of Rheumatology.

When an orthopedic surgeon replaces a joint, it involves removing worn out cartilage from both sides of the joint, followed by resurfacing of the joint with a metal and plastic replacement implant that looks and functions much like a normal joint. Over the past two decades, the safety and effectiveness of surgery, and the variety of hip and knee

joint replacement devices has improved, thanks to research driven by surgeons and device makers. What’s missing, say experts, is a better understanding of patient experiences and preferences, particularly regarding what they value when making the decision to undergo surgery, pick a surgeon, and select a device. “The good news is that this research is underway by patient-led research communities, such as ArthritisPower,” says W. Benjamin Nowell, Ph.D., Director of PatientCentered Research at CreakyJoints, the online patient support community. If you need joint surgery, it’s important that your preferences are central to your decision making at every step of the way, from timing of surgery, surgeon, implant device and recovery plan. Make sure to ask questions, get second opinions, and seek support. Surgery and recovery can be hard, but talking about them shouldn’t be. (StatePoint)

5 Hacks For Living With Diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 30.3 million Americans are living with diabetes, which affects people of all ages.

keep your medical supplies in your carry-on baggage.

Diabetes requires time and energy to manage but there are many simple things people can do to help make living with the disease easier. Here are five life hacks for those living with diabetes. • Get Moving. Experts say that exercise helps maintain stable blood glucose levels, but not everyone loves the gym. Whether it’s learning ballroom dancing or joining a basketball league, enjoyable hobbies can boost motivation to exercise. A fitness tracker that counts steps is a good way to discover how much movement you’re getting and allows you to make changes if necessary. • Travel Smart. Don’t let the logistics of travel put a damper on your

Management System, a wearable insulin pump, eliminates the need for injections. Its small, lightweight design gives people living with diabetes more freedom and flexibility, and, unlike traditional pumps, has no tubes to disconnect. Offering up to 72 hours of nonstop insulin, the Pod is water-resistant and is the only tubeless insulin pump available in the U.S. A great option for both adults and children, it is discreet, easy-to-use, and allows users to take part in just about any activity.

ADA recommends having a medical exam prior to a trip and bringing at least twice as much medication and supplies as you think you need. If you are flying, be sure to

How To Save On Mobile Devices This Holiday Season

Holiday spending is expected to rise this year over last, according to the National Retail Federation. While you may be budgeting for a more expensive season in some ways, keep in mind that when upgrading mobile devices for yourself or loved ones, you don’t necessarily need to go brand new and pay a premium. Lingering misconceptions persist that refurbished devices were necessarily broken or had problems. However, many such mobile phones, tablets and accessories that come from tradein and upgrade programs were perfectly good devices that owners sent in for newer models. Luckily, for bargain hunters, such trade-ins and sales are becoming more popular, making it easier to navigate the market for a previously owned device. Just be sure you stick to reputable sources where you can trust the device to be in fully functional condition. For example, those from MyWit on eBay undergo an extensive 65-point inspection of cosmetic, functional and radio frequency (RF) performance to ensure 100 percent functionality. Tests verify that every function that a customer can use (camera, audio, SIM, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) is in excellent working order and RF tests ensure wireless devices deliver a consistent quality of connection and do not drop available signals. “These days, refurbished devices can provide an affordable, high-quality alternative to a new device,” says David Conti, director of eCommerce at MyWit. “It’s also a thoughtful option for the eco-conscious, extending the life of devices and reducing electronic waste.” This holiday season, stretch your holiday budget without sacrificing on quality. Consider a great cost-saving secret on mobile upgrades, replacements, and tech gifts. (StatePoint)

“Diabetes limits you as a person,” said Ross Baker, an Omnipod user. “I thought using an insulin pump would control my life more – needles, cords, machines. Then I started using the Omnipod System, which takes away the typical limitations of a tubed pump, liberating me to control my diabetes without setbacks.”

To learn more, visit myomnipod. com. • Make Friends. Diabetes communities exist online and locally, and include specialized support groups for everyone from children to college students to adults. Finding the right group can help make living with diabetes something you don’t have to face alone. • Use Apps. Free apps available on iPhone and Android phones can make tracking important metrics easier and more streamlined, and can help patients more easily share their data with their healthcare providers. Find and monitor carbs, track glucose levels, fitness, vital stats and more. To make life with diabetes more manageable, discover the habits, tools and support systems that work for you and your lifestyle. (StatePoint)

Once you’ve found your perfect home, the next step is finding the right mortgage -- which can sometimes feel like you’re competing in a contact sport, being blindsided by confusing requests or financial surprises as you go through the application process. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 63.7 percent of Americans own their home. But getting there wasn’t necessarily easy. A 2017 NerdWallet survey reports that 42 percent of homeowners felt the home-buying process was stressful, a third said it was complicated, and 21 percent found it intimidating. But if interest rates are higher, an adjustable rate mortgage could make sense because its lower initial rate means lower monthly payments for a specific time period (usually five, seven or 10 years) before the rate could change.

In most instances, this ratio should not exceed 43 percent, meaning your monthly mortgage payment and other debt obligations (car loan, school loan, credit card payments) should not comprise more than 43 percent of your gross monthly income.

to help boost health for this season’s holiday travel. Feed Your Immune System

Cold and flu season ramps up just in time for the holidays, which means you may be more at risk of catching a bug. “Take precautions before boarding your flight -- wash your hands frequently, bring hand sanitizer with you and snack on antioxidant-packed vegetables like broccoli, carrots and sweet potatoes to keep your immune system strong,” says Dr. Pescatore. Fend off Fatigue

Holiday travel can seem daunting, between flight delays and bumperto-bumper traffic. What’s more, it has potential health impacts, including leg swelling and increased risk for cold and flu.

you’re around more people and susceptible to illness,” says nationally renowned natural health physician and best-selling author, Dr. Fred Pescatore. Dr. Pescatore is sharing a few tips

The American Sleep Association estimates that nearly 93 percent of travelers experience jet lag and it can be severe enough to interfere with holiday and vacation plans. “Sleep disturbances make you feel tired, nauseous and irritable -- not a good combination with holiday activities,” says Dr. Pescatore.

A peer-reviewed study shows that daily supplementation with the super-antioxidant, Pycnogenol (Pic-noj-en-all), reduces jet lag symptoms by nearly 50 percent. “Pycnogenol, a natural botanical extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, is a traveler’s best friend. You can spend less time feeling fatigued and more quality time with your loved ones this holiday season,” says Dr. Pescatore. Boost Circulation Long periods of immobility in a cramped space like a car or plane contribute to swelling and fluid accumulation throughout the legs. Known as edema, it can be uncomfortable and may feel worse after travel. Dr. Pescatore recommends taking shorts breaks to move around on road trips and to stand up and stretch during long flights to keep

blood circulating and reduce swelling. “Pycnogenol is also shown to promote circulation, and studies show its benefits for reducing swelling and discomfort during longdistance travel. Again, it’s a good supplement for travel,” he says. Pycnogenol is one of the most researched ingredients on the market with decades of studies showing its benefits for a variety of health applications. It’s available in more than 700 dietary supplements, multi-vitamins and health products worldwide. For more information, visit pycnogenol.com. “Drink plenty of water, use a supplement for a beneficial boost and remember to enjoy the holidays. Yes, even the travel can be fun,” says Dr. Pescatore. Indeed, more than 21 million veterans and service members live in the U.S., however, over the past five years, a mere 6 percent of them bought a home using a VA home loan, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. This may be due to the common myth that active duty service members, National Guard members and reservists are not eligible for VA loans (in fact, they may be eligible). Many also are unaware that unmarried, surviving spouses of veterans who died as a result of service or service-related causes are also eligible.

• Individual banks, not the Department of Veterans Affairs, offer VA loans, allowing you to work with a lender who understands your needs and makes you feel comfortable. “A specialized team member who understands unique military needs, such as a Wells Fargo Military Lending Specialist, can help you make the most of the home loan benefits you’ve earned,” says Murray. Developing a relationship with this lender is also a good idea, as you may later choose to refinance through the VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL) program. Tips For Tackling Age-Related Skin Issues Aging is a fact of life, and your skin is no exception. However, experts say that there is a lot you can do to help your skin at all stages of life. “By spotting signs that your skin is maturing, you can take steps to intervene early, helping skin stay as healthy and youthful looking as possible,” says Dr. Roger Ceilley M.D., a nationally and internationally recognized dermatologist with over 30 years of experience. To tackle age-related skin issues, Dr. Ceilley recommends the following tips. • Around age 40, begin examining your skin for changes. You’ll get a better understanding of your skin’s specific needs so you can address them accordingly. Be careful not to focus only on the face, as you may wind up playing catch-up with the rest of your skin late in the maturing process. • According to Dr. Ceilley, the levels of collagen, elastin and fatty tissue important for making skin

appear plump and youthful begin to diminish as you age, causing thinner-looking skin. Help counteract this process with a moistur-

pecially vulnerable to bruising. To help, keep a product on-hand like DerMend Moisturizing Bruise Formula which contains a blend of ceramides, alpha hydroxy acid, arnica oil and retinol. • Dr. Ceilley also advises using gentle, unscented products when bathing or showering. Scented soaps, cleansers and alcohol-based products can leave aging skin feeling irritated and dry. Be sure to wash gently and avoid scrubbing or over-exfoliating as this can further irritate the skin.

• A well-balanced diet promotes healthy, younger-looking skin. Make sure you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats each day. • Thin, fragile skin can bruise more easily. Medications such as blood thinners may leave skin es-

• Itchy skin is not only a nuisance, but it can keep you from being comfortable and prevent a good night’s sleep, which can be detrimental to one’s health at any age. Though doctors are not certain why, itchiness is a very common problem in maturing skin. To temporarily relieve discomfort, use a steroid-free, anti-itch product containing pramoxine hydrochloride 1%, which can rapidly interfere

with the itch/scratch cycle, helping to calm skin and allowing you to have a better night’s sleep. • No matter what age you are, protect your skin from the sun and use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher. Sun exposure throughout your lifetime can cause a myriad of skin problems as you get older including skin cancer, deep wrinkles, thinning skin, dark spots and broken capillary veins. “Your skincare should be specific to your needs,” says Dr. Ceilley. “Watch for signs of aging and then adopt a routine that addresses every inch of your skin.” For more information, please visit www. Simple Tips To Reduce Suffering This Flu Season U.S. health officials are predicting a harsh flu season. While there is still no cure for flu, there are steps you can take to reduce suffering while the virus takes its course. Some experts suggest starting the quest to feel better by exploring your local health food store.

Honey, which is a superfood, is a good choice, coating and soothing the throat, helping control cough, and promoting a restful night’s sleep that is necessary for healing.

garlic, and the juice of at least half a lime. The vitamin C content found in its ingredients helps boost immunity.

Dr. Lawrence Rosen, author of several books based on 25 years of practicing pediatric integrative medicine, is offering some advice to ease flu symptoms. While none of the items mentioned in this article have been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, most have a long history and are relatively inexpensive. • Curative Foods and Beverages: The digestive tract accounts for 70 to 80 percent of the immune system. When battling a virus, foods rich in vitamin C are essential to immune function. Try drinking a cup of hot water and lemon daily. Onion tea can promote a healthy respiratory system by relieving a cough and sore throat.

counter (OTC) drugs specifically for flu symptoms. Antihistamines and decongestants help with head and upper respiratory symptoms that are mostly associated with colds. Flu affects the whole body with fever, chills, aches and fatigue, and a pain reliever can address some of these symptoms. To shorten both the duration and severity of flu-like symptoms, consider a homeopathic medicine, such as Oscillococcinum. When patients took it within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours.

• Spiced-up Recipes: Add garlic and oregano to foods for immune support. Basil, rosemary and thyme help the respiratory tract. Try different recipes, too. One traditional bedtime treatment in the Dominican Republic is a paste of honey, finely chopped onion and

• Indispensable Oils: Add eucalyptus oil to a bath to ease body aches from flu, or inhale drops added to a steaming bowl of water for clearer nasal passages. Inhale fennel oil similarly as a cough expectorant. • Homeopathic Medicine: There are few conventional over-the-

It’s the number one over-thecounter flu medicine in France, where it’s been on the market for more than 70 years. The key is to take quick action against early symptoms. Recommended for anyone age 2 and up, Oscillo is nondrowsy and doesn’t interact with other medications. • Healing Herbs and Plants:

Homeopathic OTCs use microdoses of plants, animals and minerals; whereas herbal supplements are less diluted with a different therapeutic principle. Astragalus and echinacea supplements purportedly boost immunity. Try teas with eucalyptus leaves or calendula for fever. Elderberry, when taken in extract form, boosts the immune system, which helps the body respond quickly and strongly to viruses such as influenza. For more information, check out Dr. Rosen’s book, “Treatment Alternatives for Children,” a comprehensive reference guide for nearly 100 common illnesses, offering side-by-side comparisons between conventional and alternative treatment options. Don’t suffer more than you must this flu season. Homeopathic medications and natural homemade treatments may help reduce the severity of symptoms. (StatePoint)

Tips For Choosing And Using Your 2018 Medicare Health Plan

It’s that time of year again: The Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) began Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. Medicare is a critical source of health care for millions of Americans who are age 65 and older and for younger people with certain qualifying disabilities. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) sets this time for people eligible for Medicare to select or make changes to their plans for the following year. For people with Medicare, there is nothing more important than maintaining physical and financial independence. The right health care plan can help. It can ensure you have access to fitness programs, preventive services, engaged doctors, maintenance medications and transportation, all at an affordable price. That’s why it’s so crucial for Medicare consumers to consider their health and budget needs as they evaluate their health care options for 2018.

“Choosing a plan isn’t as simple as just keeping the one you had last year or looking only at the month-

ly premium costs,” says Brian Evanko, who leads Cigna’s government programs, which include Cigna-HealthSpring. “The goal should be to choose a plan that best meets your individual needs. It’s important to find the right balance for you between benefits and affordability.”

five tips: 1. Make a list of your priorities and health care needs. Focusing on prevention? Keeping out-of-pocket costs low? Staying active? Needing dental, vision or hearing coverage? Seeking comprehensive prescription drug coverage? Take time to evaluate plan options according to your health and financial goals.

To help you choose a plan and get the most from it, consider these

2. Know your network. Many plans offer choices with a network of doctors. Navigating the health care system can be complex, timeconsuming and costly. Without the right support, you can feel very alone. That’s why it’s critical to surround yourself with a team of providers who are committed to

getting to know your needs and to meeting them through open communication and care coordination. The primary care physician serves as your quarterback, directing your care through a network of likeminded specialists. 3. Take advantage of preventive care benefits. Medicare plans offer many preventive health benefits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 100,000 lives could be saved each year if everyone received recommended preventive care, which often starts with seeing a doctor for an annual check-up. So go to your doctor, know the health screenings you need for your age and get them to take control of your health. For more information about preventive care, visit www.cigna.com/takecontrol. 4. Stay active with fitness benefits. Exercise is essential to healthy aging. Original Medicare doesn’t

cover gym memberships or fitness programs, but some Medicare Advantage plans offer such benefits as part of their coverage at no extra cost. 5. Use no-cost resources to help pick the right plan. CMS’ Plan Finder helps you compare costs, covered medications and other items. Many insurance plans offer seminars at no cost and with no obligation to sign up. You can also check health plans’ websites or call customer service for more information. Local and state agencies on aging also connect older adults and caregivers with community resources. As you weigh the options, Evanko offers this advice: “It’s worth it to take the time to set your priorities and see how plan benefits stack up. Only then can you choose a plan that really helps you get the most from it and reach your goals.” (StatePoint)

Easy Ways To Stay Healthy Through The Holidays

Between all those holiday festivities and extra seasonal chores, it can be difficult to always stay on top of your health. Here are some easy ways to prioritize wellness this time of year.

Go for the apple pie and eggnog, but pair them with healthier choices earlier in the day.

Make Mornings Count Evenings are especially busy around this time of year, so taking control of your mornings can be key. But, on dark winter mornings, the hardest part about working out can sometimes be just getting out of bed. Stay accountable by making workout plans with friends. Get your yoga-loving coworker to commit to a weekly class with you, or start a holiday steps competition at work to motivate yourself to move more.

Instead of reaching for all the sweets and comfort foods in front of you, think about what you’d really like to eat. Choose wisely and mindfully.

Take a breather, and when you can, get yourself to bed early.

Why Don’t People Remember Their New Year Resolutions By Sumaiya Malik I tried to remember what new year resolutions I had made on New Year’s Eve last December. I could not remember even one.

Whether it’s lack of motivation, lack of resources, or we just lose interest, it’s time to make a fresh start and figure out ways to finish

are 10 reasons people don’t stick to their New Year’s resolutions and how to keep it from happening this year. 1. You are the lone ranger – if you are alone in your resolution, chances are you will forget about it. Involve others in the plan.

I thought I was tired and so tried the next day when I was freshly out of bed. Failed again! I don’t remember even one. Nearly half of us are making New Year’s resolutions, but less than 10 percent of us are actually keeping them.

To cure the issue, set up benchmarks throughout the year. 3. Goals are too hard to achieve – People make lofty resolutions (e.g. World peace) that are sometimes impossible to achieve. Remind yourself to make realistic goals. 4. No time – any resolution is a time commitment. With time absent the goal goes out the window. It might be food for thought to allocate a short time to the resolution like 5 minutes a day. 5. Unrealistic resolutions - You need to set a goal that is actually achievable in the time frame you

set for yourself. 6. No plan. 7. Lack of Honesty – check your commitment level before making the resolution. 8. Wrong perspective - sometimes all you need to keep going is a pat on the back—from yourself. “Congratulate yourself for your progress. 9. Not believing in oneself. 10. Financial burden – Gym membership is expensive. A daily plan without the membership is doable.

How To Pick A Retirement Account

Whether you’re starting your career, approaching retirement or you’re somewhere in between, it’s important to understand the various options available to help you reach your retirement goals.

Hancock explains that working with a financial advisor can help you estimate your post-retirement budget. However, it’s important to keep in mind that withdrawing from a traditional account to pay for unexpected expenses during retirement can result in unpleasant consequences, such as higher Medicare premiums, more of your Social Security benefits being taxed or raising your tax bracket.

Even if you are already investing in a 401(k) or other retirement plan, contributing to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can help you diversify your investments and provide an additional tax-advantaged savings plan, say experts. “There are some important differences between Roth and Traditional IRAs that all retirement planners should keep in mind,” says Mary Ellen Hancock, a senior wealth strategist with PNC Wealth Management.

If you expect your tax rate will be lower when you retire, a traditional account may offer you more spendable income for retirement. The challenge is that there is no way to know what

On the other hand, qualified withdrawals from Roth accounts are tax-free and should not affect your taxable income or treatment of Medicare and Social Security benefits. Required Minimum Distributions “Roth options may have some advantages over traditional accounts, as you do not need to start withdrawing at age 70 1/2,” says Hancock.

“Traditional accounts, both 401(k) s and IRAs, require you to withdraw money once you reach that age, which limits the account’s growth potential.” For many individuals, using both Roth and traditional accounts may help address some of the uncertainty over your future tax bracket and whether your spending needs may change. There are IRA contribution limits set each year by the Internal Revenue Service, so it’s important to check with the IRS website, your financial planner or tax advisor on how much you can contribute to each. While no one can plan for every eventuality, understanding your current circumstances and looking ahead can help you make sound investment choices now that can help you reach your retirement goals. Men And Women: A Different Outlook On Work And Cancer Miss World 2017 The challenges surrounding life with cancer, particularly in the workplace, are complex, and new findings show that male and female experiences can differ. Golden Temple Sri Harmandir Sahib (lit. “the abode of God”), also known as Golden Temple and the Darbar Sa-

led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale seeking to create a new nation named Khalistan.

The word “Harmandir” is composed of two words, “Hari” which scholars variously translate either as “God” or “Vishnu”, and “mandir” which means temple or house. The Sikh tradition has several Gurdwaras named “Harmandir Sahib” such as those in Kiratpur and Patna. Of these, the one in Amritsar is most revered.

hib, is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism. It is located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. The temple is built around a manmade pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mian Mir – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath. The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. The army led by Ahmad Shah Abdali, for example, demolished it in 1757 and again in 1762, then filled the pool with garbage. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple. The temple is spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism. It became a center of the Singh Sabha Movement between 1883 and 1920s. In the early 1980s, the temple became a center of conflict between the Indian government led by Indira Gandhi, some Sikh groups and a militant movement

In 1984, Gandhi sent in the Indian Army as part of Operation Blue Star, leading to deaths of over 1,000 militants, soldiers and civilians, as well as causing much damage to the temple and the destruction of Akal Takht. The temple complex was rebuilt again after the 1984 damage. The Harmandir Sahib is an open house of worship for all men and women, from all walks of life and faith. It has a square plan with four entrances, has a circumambulation path around the pool. The temple is a collection of buildings around the sanctum and the pool. One of these is Akal Takht, the chief center of religious authority of Sikhism. Additional buildings include a clock tower, the offices of Gurdwara Committee, a Museum and a langar – a free Sikh community run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship. The temple complex has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its application is pending on the tentative list of UNESCO. The Harmandir Sahib is also spelled as Harimandar, Harimandir or Harmandar Sahib. It is also called the Darbar Sahib which means “sacred audience”, as well as the Golden Temple for its gold foil covered sanctum center.

According to the Sikh historical records, the land that became Amritsar and houses the Harimandar Sahib was chosen by Guru Amar Das – the third Guru of the Sikh tradition. It was then called Guru Da Chakk, after he had asked his disciple Ram Das to find land to start a new town with a man made pool as its central point. After Ram Das succeeded Guru Amar Das in 1574, and given the hostile opposition he faced from the sons of Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das founded the town that came to be known as “Ramdaspur”. He started by completing the pool with the help of Baba Buddha (not to be confused with the Buddha of Buddhism). Guru Ram Das built his new official centre and home next to it. He invited merchants and artisans from other parts of India to settle into the new town with him. Ramdaspur town expanded during the time of Guru Arjan financed by donations and constructed by voluntary work. The town grew to become the city of Amritsar, and the pool area grew into the Golden Temple complex. The construction activity between 1574 and 1604 is described in Mahima Prakash Vartak, a semi-historical Sikh hagiography text likely composed in 1741, and the earliest known document dealing with the lives of all the ten Gurus. Guru Arjan installed the scripture of Sikhism inside the new temple in 1604. Continuing the efforts of Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan established Amritsar as a primary Sikh pilgrimage destination. He wrote a voluminous amount of Sikh scripture including the popular Sukhmani Sahib.

Akbar And Birbal The Three Questions King Akbar was very fond of

Birbal. This made a certain courtier very jealous. Now this courtier always wanted to be chief minister, but this was not possible as Birbal filled that position. One day Akbar praised Birbal in front of the courtier. This made the courtier very angry and he said that the king praised Birbal unjustly and if Birbal could answer three of his questions, he would accept the fact that Birbal was intelligent. Akbar always wanting to test Birbals wit readily agreed. The three questions were 1. How many stars are there in the sky 2. Where is the centre of the Earth and 3. How many men and how many women are there in the world.

Immediately Akbar asked Birbal the three questions and informed him that if he could not answer them, he would have to resign as

chief minister. To answer the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and said, “There are as many stars in the sky as there is hair on the sheep’s body. My friend the courtier is welcome to count them if he likes.” To answer the second question, Birbal drew a couple of lines on the floor and bore an iron rod in it and said, “this is the center of the Earth, the courtier may measure it himself if he has any doubts.” In answer to the third question, Birbal said, “Counting the exact number of men and women in the world would be a problem as there are some specimens like our courtier friend here who cannot easily be classified as either. Therefore if all people like him are killed, then and only then can one count the exact number.” Moral: There is Always a Way.

Diwali, a five-day celebration of various rituals and practices, welcomes the New Year for Hindus and celebrates the triumph of good over evil in scriptural events. For many visitors, the most popular attraction and a highlight of the festivities is the Annakut festival on the fifth day. Or, take a new twist on a conventional recipe with a cauliflower hummus. It’s extra creamy and has an added boost of veggies from the addition of roasted cauliflower.

So, during the hectic holiday crunch, you may be looking for ways to simplify the many tasks on your to-do list. When it comes to decorating, consider these timesaving strategies for turning your home into a fuss-free winter wonderland. Get Organized Early If your seasonal décor is stowed away in the garage or attic, dust it off and get it untangled before the day you plan to do your actual decorating. Locating these items and getting them prepped to be strung and hung may be a job in and of itself, so don’t get overwhelmed by trying to make it all happen in one day. While this tool is ideal around the holidays, it can also be used yearround on hard-to-reach lights and appliances, making it a great stocking stuffer for your decorator-inresidence. To learn more, visit Treemote.com. Make it Fun Make decorating fun by creating a festive atmosphere. Create a playlist of all your favorite holiday tracks to enjoy as you decorate. Pop a tray of cookies into the oven. When the decorating is over, reward yourself by curling up and watching a favorite holiday movie. There’s no reason why decorating needs to feel like a chore. Simple strategies can make decking the halls not only easy, but fun. (StatePoint)

Side Dishes Casseroles will feed a crowd and most can be served at room temperature. Made with russet potatoes and onions, a cheesy potato casserole with cornflake topping won’t last long at any gathering. It’s a satisfying substitute for traditional hash browns at brunch, and is great for all ages. Alternately, a vegetarian butternut squash casserole is a light, sweet complement to heavier potluck fare. Or, if you’re short on ingredients or inspiration, a frittata filled with cheese, veggies and protein (whatever you have on hand) will work. Bake or slow cook the frittata the night before

and add a quick sprinkle of herbs or chives before packing it to go. Desserts If you have a sweet tooth, it only makes sense to volunteer to bring your favorite dessert. Save time by using a high-performance blender like the Vitamix A2300 Ascent Series blender to mix batter in advance for a big batch of almond cookies or snickerdoodles. If baking for a cookie exchange or large gathering, start early and freeze the cookies until party day. Cakes, pumpkin and apple pies are also easy to make ahead and freeze. Simply wrap a freshly baked, cooled cake or pie in plastic wrap and place in a freezer bag. Before an event, defrost in the bag at room temperature. If your dish has multiple components, separate warm and cold items during transport and use insulated carriers to maintain optimal temperatures. Make something that doesn’t require a ton of prep time and equipment once you arrive, unless you’ve asked the host in advance. Bring trivets or serving utensils, if needed, and don’t assume the host will have extras. Don’t get caught unprepared this holiday party season. The right ingredients and tools will make you a hit at any potluck, even at a moment’s notice. (StatePoint)

Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas Holiday shopping can be a source of stress for anyone, but particularly for procrastinators.

1. DIY-It. DIY gifts can be heartfelt, and many items can be made in a pinch. Bake a tray of Christmas cookies and tie them up with a bow; make seasonally scented homemade candles; or knit a scarf. The possibilities for crafty folks are endless. 2. Get Accessorized. Don’t get stumped.

Need some last-minute gift ideas? Think about readily accessible, yet thoughtful items that don’t require a lengthy shipping process. Let these five ideas help solve your eleventhhour gift-giving woes.

Consider a classic fashion accessory, such as a Casio Vintage Watch, which can be found in many national retailers, in a range of affordable prices. Functional and fashionable, these water-resistant timepieces that feature both an alarm and stopwatch will complement an array of style preferences.

Help Kids Get The Most Out Of Music Education As the list of known benefits of music education grows, you may be wondering how you can help your kids get the most out of their efforts. Here are five ways to help make music education a success. 1. Be encouraging. Learning music is hard work, but it shouldn’t feel that way. Keep it positive and be encouraging. Fostering a love of music is only possible if a child enjoys practicing and playing. If your child is taking lessons, be sure that is or her teacher practices a similar philosophy. 2. Get practical. Incorporate practical engagement and games to make it fun. For example, learn new musical words with body actions like clapping and stomping, so students can better understand the rhythm and music through movement. 3. Be contemporary. Many kids will prefer playing what they already know and love. If your child is learning to play piano or keyboard, consider a new digital instrument that makes learning the latest tunes easy, such as Casio’s LK-265 keyboard. Outfitted with lighted keys, a voice fingering guide and a Step-up Lesson System, beginners are able to learn built-in songs at their own individual pace. The instrument can also connect to Casio’s Chordana Play app -- a free app that displays the correct keyboard position for both hands in real-time. The app is expandable through downloadable MIDI files, so students can customize lessons to their taste. 4. Pace yourself. Every child has his or her own musical aptitude and passion for learning. To ensure that your kids are neither overwhelmed nor bored, discover the pace that works best for each individual and don’t pressure anyone into rushing or slowing down. 5. Set goals. Whether it’s working to perfect a particular song, or it’s practicing for a talent show, setting achievable goals can be a great motivation for budding musicians. (StatePoint)

3. Head to the Box Office. Quickly check the schedule of your gift recipient’s favorite band, team or theater company for tickets to an experience, such as a musical, concert or game. This thoughtful gift can be purchased and received in an instant, thanks to e-ticketing. 4. Pamper Them. The holidays are stressful. Help your loved ones unwind during a busy time of year. Consider a gift certificate for a spa or beauty treatment somewhere local to your recipi-

ent. The gift can be enjoyed exactly when it’s needed most. 5. Let Them Pick. When you’re really in a pinch and you’ve waited until the last minute, don’t stress. A gift card can be a great way to show you thought of someone, without having to spend too much time or energy in search of the perfect item. (StatePoint)

In the evening, a large crosssection of the Indian-American community attended a grand cultural program which was held at the Klett Performing Art Center, Georgetown, TX.

Delhi High Court Dismisses Plea For Expert Panel To Review ‘Padmavati’

The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking setting up of an expert committee of historians and social activists to examine Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ to ensure there were no “distortions”, said such pleas were “encouraging” those agitating against the film. The court said the plea against the release of the period drama was “hopeless and misconceived” and such pleas are “encouraging” people who are agitating against it. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Akhand Rashtrawadi Party, which claims to be a political party, said the committee headed by a retired Delhi High Court Judge should include a Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) member and ensure that there were no “distortions” of historic facts in respect of Rani Padmini/Padmavati of Chittorgarh, on whose story the film is based. The committee should ensure that no sentiments are hurt with the release of the film, the plea said. The plea also said the CBFC should examine/re-examine the movie’s contents with the help of historians or authors with excellent knowledge of historic facts about Rani Padmavati, so that “wrong or fictitious” image of the 14th century queen should not go before the people worldwide and public sentiments are not hurt. The PIL, filed through lawyer Puneesh Grover, has made the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, movie’s scriptwriter and the CBFC as respondents.
