The Way Forward For The U.S. Sports Industry Athletic arenas, stadiums and even youth sports centers have shuttered their doors to large crowds amid COVID-19, yielding a massive, growing revenue loss for a major American industry and contributing to thousands of layoffs nationwide.
“COVID-style” deep cleans, it is the first and only surface coating approved by the EPA for continu-

So how does SurfaceWise2 work differently than conventional cleaning?
However, analysts say a new scientific breakthrough could soon put an end to the extended timeout. In addition to mask-wearing and social distancing, ensuring that viruses can’t live on high-traffic surfaces is crucial to keeping inperson sports safe, particularly as new research shows SARS-CoV-2 can outlive influenza on surfaces by 10 days. While conventional disinfectants can’t guarantee full coverage, and they leave surfaces immediately vulnerable to recontamination, a new product called SurfaceWise2 from biotechnology company Allied BioScience, is offering optimism that sports facilities could soon safely reopen to fans. Replacing the need for constant
Beyond the novel coronavirus, SurfaceWise2 is also effective against the common cold and bacteria that plague sports facilities, including MRSA, streptococcus (strep throat), E. coli and fungi, as well as the influenza virus.
Compatible with virtually all surfaces, it’s applied via an electrostatic sprayer for efficient, complete and uniform treatment.
ous protection against COVID-19 with a single application, making safety more reliable and more efficient. Only approved for use in Texas so far, the nation is still awaiting promised fast-tracked approval for broader use in facilities like sports arenas, especially as the second wave of COVID-19 cases approaches just in time for flu season.
tional cleaning methods, just don’t cut it,” says Daryl Johnston, senior sports advisor for Allied BioScience and FOX News NFL game analyst.
Droplets are small -- 900 times smaller than an average droplet -and applied at a force of 75 times greater than gravity, causing a “wraparound effect,” and a natural force of attraction between the sprayed droplets and target surfaces.
“To rebuild the $100 billion U.S. sports industry, the long-lasting, EPA-approved surface coating SurfaceWise2 is the most effective way to protect stadiums, locker rooms and training facilities, and keep players and fans safe.”
Unlike conventional cleaning and disinfection, which leave surfaces vulnerable to recontamination immediately, once SurfaceWise2 is applied, its long-lasting antiviral coating physically breaks down the cells of bacteria and viruses
that land on treated surfaces, effectively and continuously killing them without giving the bacteria a chance to mutate and build up resistance. SurfaceWise2 has undergone rigorous review and carries the lowest toxicity rating by the EPA, ensuring it is very safe for humans. Non-toxic, non-irritating, odorless and containing no chemicals that produce harmful vapors or gases, the solution can be used in all areas occupied by athletes, industry workers and fans, even in enclosed spaces. To learn more, visit www.surfacewise.com. As scientists continue working on developing a viable vaccine, restoring the ability of businesses to operate safely will be key in tackling joblessness and revitalizing the economy in the meantime. When it comes to industries that rely on drawing a crowd, new science presents new hope. (StatePoint)
Home Office Essentials To Streamline Your Work Week If you’ve been working remotely for months, you’re likely long overdue for a home office upgrade. Having the right tools can make working from home easier and less stressful. Here are a few small tweaks and essentials to consider: • Scene change: Is your home “office” actually the kitchen table or a couch? Keep a healthy boundary between your personal and professional life with a visual cue that indicates when the work day has started and when it’s ended. That cue could be the strategic use of a room divider to hide personal items and keep you focused. Or, it could be as simple as plop-
ping a desk lamp onto the kitchen table during work hours to give the surface a professional, task-oriented feel. • Number crunching: Make number crunching and re-
cordkeeping easy with a printing calculator. With Cost/Sell/Margin functionality as well as the ability to check and correct up to 150 steps and print after correction, Casio’s HR-
170RC is a versatile choice. Printing two lines per second with two-color printing, you can quickly produce paper records of your work for more organized files. With its small footprint, plus calendar and clock functionality, it can help you streamline your desk for a clutter-free, fashionable workspace. • Caffeine fix: Now that your cup of joe is being enjoyed at home most mornings, consider upgrading your coffee maker to fit your tastes and your demanding schedule. If you miss the latte or cappuccino you used
to grab on your morning commute, it may be time to replace your standard drip machine with a fullfledged cappuccino and café latte maker. Or, consider going high-tech. New coffee maker models employing smart technology let you brew from bed using just your phone for a guaranteed caffeine fix by your early morning call. • Get the full picture: If you were accustomed to a fullsized desktop monitor at work, but have working on a laptop at home, you may find you are more productive by adding an external monitor to your home office setup. With it looking more likely that remote working situations are here to stay, it’s time to make your home office work for you. (StatePoint)

5 Flu Season Tips To Keep Your Household Healthy Here are five top tips to help your household stay healthy:
Inspired by nature, ARM & HAMMER Essentials Disinfecting Wipes, a citrus-based disinfectant, can be used around kids and pets and cleans without harsh chemicals.
1. Wash hands regularly: Make sure every member of the household washes their hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time. This is especially important to do after getting home, before preparing food and after using the bathroom. Even with regular hand-washing, it’s still important to avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes. 2. Guard against germs: Cold and flu viruses can survive on household surfaces long enough for germs to spread. However, cleaning surfaces with an effective disinfectant can help put a stop to germ transfer. The good news is that you don’t need harsh chemicals.
Safe for use on a range of surfaces, including stainless steel, sealed granite, hardwood, tubs, shower walls, classrooms and gym surfaces, use these wipes to disinfect kitchens, bathrooms, pet areas, non-porous surfaces car interiors and other frequently-touched
areas of your home. In the never-ending battle against germs, this is an invaluable tool to have on hand, as the wipes kill 99.9% of viruses (including cold and flu viruses and human coronavirus), 99.9% of bacteria, MRSA, streptococcus, staphylococ cus, E. coli, salmonella and klebsiella pneumoniae. To learn more, visit armandhammercleans. com. 3. Load up on veggies: A nutritious diet can help keep you vital during flu season. Pack a range of immunityboosting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
into just one meal with a hearty stew of potatoes, carrots, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, beans and lentils. To eliminate pesticides, wax and soil from produce, include a vegetable wash in your meal prep routine, which can be more effective than water alone. 4. Supplement your diet: Consider incorporating a dietary supplement into your family’s daily routine that contains vitamin C, zinc and other immunity-boosters. 5. Practice healthy habits: Getting regular exercise, staying hydrated and getting plenty of shut-eye are all proven ways to protect your health. Be sure to practice these healthy habits. As COVID-19 continues to place substantial demands on hospitals and healthcare resources, staying healthy and protected against the flu is especially vital. Take steps to boost your immunity and stop the spread of germs. (StatePoint)

Taking Action To Reduce Insulin Costs A new campaign is encouraging people to take action during open enrollment to lower their insulin costs. The campaign, “Insulin Affordability: Learn. Act. Share.” encourages those who use Lilly insulin to: • Learn about affordability options • Act by visiting insulinaffordability.com or calling the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center • Share this information with others who may benefit. Among Lilly’s suite of solutions is the Lilly Insulin Value Program, which reduces outof-pocket costs for Lilly insulins to $35 per month. People without insurance, as well as those with commercial insurance, are eligible. Beginning in January 2021, people enrolled in participating Medicare Part D insurance plans will be able to access their Lilly insulin for $35 per month as part of the Medicare Part D Senior Savings Model. During open enrollment, it’s important that seniors enroll in a participating Medicare Part D plan that covers their insulin. That’s
why Lilly created a resource allowing users to enter their zip code to view which Medicare plans are participating and covering Lilly insulins.

Glad To Meet You, Congressman John Carter!
By Dushant Reddy Congressman John Carter, who is serving the Texas 31st district for the ninth term , was very gracious to accept an invitation for an online “Greet and Meet” event hosted by a large group of Indian community members from Austin. Abhiram Garapati, a well known entrepreneur and businessman from Austin was instrumental in organizing the event. The attendees who came to the event were very interested to know where their Representative stands on issues that were on top of their list, and to learn about what his priorities and plans are for his constituents going forward. The event started with attendees reciting the ancient Sanskrit Prayer Sarve bhavantu sukhinah. The Congressman became very glad on hearing the English translation of its verses - “We seek a happy , illness free, and a pure life for every being in this universe”. A member from the audience fol-
lowed up with a brief introduction about the Congressman highlighting his career, achievements and the service he has been doing for his district over a period of nearly 50 years. After the introduction, Congressman Carter addressed the audience starting with his observation of how the values of the Indian American community members are very much similar to the values of every other American in this country. He went on to talk about how it is important for every US citizen to have a job, be able to educate their family and live in a safe and secure neighborhood. He emphasized that the United States government exists to make the lives of individual citizens better. Coming to the topic of issues, the Congressman made it clear that the security of the individual citizen has always been the top priority for him. He also attributed his focus on this issue due to the twenty nine long years he served as a County Judge before joining the US Congress.
He went on to add how he felt proud about serving in that position because he was able to directly make an impact on keeping neighborhoods safe where children are able to play in the playgrounds, and go to school without any fear or danger. He said he carried the same attitude when he went to congress at a time when 9/11 just happened, and helped pass bills that made it difficult for terrorists and criminals. He also touched upon the current situation where there are calls for defunding the Police Departments. He emphasized that Policemen are not above the law and they should be tried for the crimes they commit just like any other criminal. So de-funding is not a solution. He also mentioned a bill he is working on which will enable the creation of a center where Police Departments nationwide can do an inquiry to check whether an applicant for a job had any issues about racism or violence against a community etc to prevent cops that otherwise might have a great record from getting hired.

Congressman Carter went on to talk about the next big thing that affects everyone in Texas.
He said “Texas has the longest border with Mexico compared to any other state in the US”. Therefore the illegal immigration and the criminal activity that is occurring there is a major concern for him, and mentioned about serving as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Committee for six years. He said he has been to the southern border many times as part of that job to see things first hand. He said immigration should be made simple - “If you come here legally , we should cut the red tape as much as we can and make it friendly”. He also commended President Trump on the issue and the work he is doing on bringing back the economy. He emphasized the importance of cutting red-tape and making it easy for entrepreneurs and businesses to grow and hire people. Touching upon healthcare, Carter said he understands that people with pre-existing conditions must be taken care of, and he has been working on it for over 20 years. He said there are ways to manage this without raising costs , and the answer is not to go for socialized medicine. He strongly believes America values human life and
will do the right thing to take care of all people. The bill he is currently working on will reduce the cost of prescription drugs and supports funding for Alzheimer and Cancer research. “Relationship with India has been the best it has ever been” remarked Congressman Carter on talking about US-India partnership. He reiterated his support for India with regard to the current issues it is facing at its border and echoed President Trump’s statement on India - “We will be there for you!”. He commended the Indian communities’ contribution in the tech industry locally and nationwide , and said “We are very happy to have you here” . He concluded his remarks saying “Best Wishes to all of you. Happy Navratri and Diwali. How’s that! “ . The event concluded with audience asking a few questions about economy, the negative media campaign against Hindus, and the threat from terrorism with reference to the recent incidents in France. Congressman Carter answered them frankly and clearly, and reiterated that he is on their side and will do his best to protect everyone’s interests in his district.

Craft Therapy Healing The Nation’s Veterans
Therapeutic and rehabilitation benefits of crafting are well-known to those who’ve experienced them firsthand, but advocates want more people to understand what a powerful healing tool it can be, particularly for the nation’s veterans during this time of increased isolation and anxiety.

three top winners will be awarded a Southwest Airlines gift card for $1,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively. “Through Craft & Salute, we wanted to share and elevate the healing power of crafting,” says Joe McClain, retired Navy captain and Help Heal Veterans CEO. For almost 50 years, Help Heal Veterans has supplied free artsand-crafts kits to veterans and active duty military recovering from wounds, injuries and long-term psychological effects of warfare. These kits can provide many therapeutic benefits, including an improvement in fine motor skills, cognitive functioning, memory, anger management and dexterity. They also help address symptoms from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. In a recent survey, 94 percent of respondents said the kits helped them have a more positive outlook on life, and 89 percent said the kits helped relieve their pain.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for effective coping strategies has only grown, according to McClain, with millions of veterans on lockdown and experiencing increased isolation, boredom and anxiety. Not surprisingly, Heal Vets has seen a huge increase in demand, shipping nearly 290,000 craft kits to veterans since the beginning of the pandemic, including deliveries to over 90 VA medical centers, a large number of domestic and overseas military bases, state veteran homes and other locations where the need is great. Freedom of Speech By Sadhu Utprerakam The gruesome murder of Samuel Paty , a middle school teacher in France has shocked the entire world and sent chills down the spines of free thinking people everywhere. It was more shocking to see that some nations (including a few South Asian nations) were angry with the French President for standing up for his country’s values, and supporting the teacher, whose intent was to educate the students in his class about freedom of speech. Given my south Asian roots, I feel sad to see such responses. This also made me introspect into society’s collective motivations to retrogress to medieval times, and if similar incidents can happen in this country.
And If so, what can we do to protect our people’s lives and freedom? As I ponder over these questions, I am reminded of the following verse from Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad-Gita 2.64 - one who controls the mind, and is free from attachment and aversion, even while using the objects of the senses, attains the Grace of God. Control of our mind and freeing ourselves from aversion are two aspects that human beings need to cultivate to exist in a society that aims to respect and enable free speech.

sulting out of it.
In a diverse country like the United States, where we have people from different cultural backgrounds, it is very natural to encounter expressions that might offend a group of people.
That harm cannot be imagined based on our beliefs, liking, blind faith or prejudice.
Some of this could be just ignorance which we can attempt to correct, but sometimes offensive expressions could be the wanton actions of people who may have a dislike for a particular group or thought.
In a country like ours, where freedom of expression is guaranteed, nobody should die for what they say or think.
We have to understand that our country has ample laws to protect every individual living here from harm resulting from the expression of threat, invasion of privacy and defamation.
This is possible only if we train ourselves to enforce the values of this nation within our thoughts, words
Our opposition to any form of speech or expression must be based on clearly identifying the harm re-
America and the west in general owes its ability to attract people all over the world because of the liberties and opportunities it guarantees to every individual living within their borders. Freedom of speech and expression are very much part of that framework. It is important that people who choose to come and live here do not attempt to compromise those ideals. It is always desirable if individuals take it upon themselves to cherish and uphold those values rather than being regulated by law enforcement.
Our survival depends on every individual doing their part. Let us make sure we do not waver from it.

Working Together to Improve Educational Access and Equity: COVID-19 has forced organizations, businesses and education systems to configure new frameworks to continue functioning. Unfortunately, educators are facing a huge wall as roughly 15 percent of U.S. households with schoolage children do not have the highspeed internet connection at home needed to complete their assignments, according to Pew Research Center data. While options may vary based on a school district’s ability to provide resources, parents can reach out to their local community boards and school districts to see what options

The good news is that it doesn’t require many materials to create a DIY desk and it’s a great activity to do together.
Parents should feel empowered to reach out to their child’s teacher for progress updates or to address any areas of confusion with class schedules or assignments.
Using science tri-folds and heavyduty tape, parents and kids can create private cubicles that can be propped up on any surface and customized to their liking – be creative and look to bring things into the space that will keep your child energized and motivated. 2. What Being A Peace Corps Volunteer Is Really Like
For many, Peace Corps service is a first step toward a career or the continuation of a life’s work. “The idea of the Peace Corps -that volunteers could serve their country for the cause of peace by living and working in other countries -- struck a chord with thousands of Americans in the early 1960s. That enthusiasm continues today,” says Peace Corps director, Jody K. Olsen.

• Education is the Peace Corps’ largest program area. Volunteers may inspire students in elementary, secondary, or post-secondary schools, work as resource teachers or teacher trainers, or develop libraries and technology resource centers. “I taught mathematics, biology and citizenship, led science clubs, helped increase literacy and worked with my Cameroonian counterparts in developing a book for math teachers,” says Jomara Laboy Rivera, a returned volunteer who now works in the Peace Corps’ Office of Programming and Training.
But what’s the experience really like? As the agency explains, selected volunteers are placed overseas in service in one of six sectors. Here’s a bit about each, as well as volunteer insights: • Agriculture volunteers work with farmers and families to increase food security and adapt to climate change while promoting environmental conservation.

Political Organization At An All-Time High In Austin’s Asian American Community
By Sumaiya Malik This article was originally published in austonia.com Eligible Asian American voters in Texas are more politically organized than ever before and are poised to make an impact this election.
that mobilizes Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, or AAPI, in electoral and civic participation. Origins such as Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Filipino,
Zoom made it easy to attend and attendees spoke up about issues that mattered to them.
Texas has the third largest population of eligible Asian American voters in the U.S. with 698,000 voters.
At least five Texan candidates of South Asian descent are running for county, state and federal office this year which is indicative of heightened political awareness within the community, The Texas Tribune said. “We have more Asians running for office activating our communities. Also, we have seen heinous attacks on our communities from the White House through policies around immigration, racist COVID-19 attacks, and the Muslim ban that has made our community want to stand up and fight back,” said immigration attorney Pooja Sethi, District 10 Austin City Council candidate. Asian American voters exhibit tremendous diversity in terms of national origin, geographic region, religion and English-language proficiency, according to Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote, a national nonpartisan organization
In 2016, only about half of 1.3 million Asian Americans in Texas were eligible voters. This year, politically active organizations in the Asian community collaborated in forums, where they invited political candidates to meet the population.
Rapid growth in this population, policies of the current government and the 2020 Census may have contributed to the group’s active participation in this election cycle and possibly continued political dialog after Nov. 3.
The latest Census Bureau data shows Austin’s Asian community has grown, becoming the second largest in the state with more than 80,000 Asians—surpassing the Black population for the first time in history.
engagement,” said Ahmed Moledina, Chairman-elect of the Greater Austin Asian American Chamber of Commerce.
Cambodian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Hmong and Laotian origin voters are included in the Asian category, according to AAPI Data, a publisher of demographic data and policy research. In many cases, Asian Americans are naturalized citizens who did not grow up within the American political system. They could not apply the same political ideology in the US that they had seen in their countries of origin. “In the second generation, a lot are Democrats unless their thinking is influenced by their [immigrant] parents,” said Jayant Sheth, from the Austin Chapter of Texas Asian Republic Assembly, a Republican group of Asian voters that started in 2016. “It is important for Asians to be a part of the political process to have our voices heard, and work long term for a strong sustainable community through political voice and
WiseUp TX, a nonpartisan non-profit that informs the Asian population about political issues, had over 1,500 attendees in each of its three forums this election season on Facebook. It partnered with the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce and 20 other AAPI organizations to host Democratic, Republican and Libertarian candidates for the Texas House, city of Austin and Travis and Williamson counties. “Community attendance gives you a really great indication of how organized all Asian American and Pacific Islander, AAPI, organizations, including the South Asian community, are to make sure our community is continuously informed in all the ways that we can really make a difference this election cycle,” said Azra Siddiqi, founder of WiseUp TX. According to a 2020 Asian American Voter Survey, most in the Asian American Pacific Islander communities have concerns for health care, immigration, the environment, guns and education. A live survey conducted by Pakistani American Collaboration for
Texas, or PACT, a political advocacy group, reflected the same this October. Co-founder of PACT Imran Baqai said the organization has already started planning post-election discussions on “polarized topics” such as healthcare, immigration, gun control and police reform. “The last four years have energized this group and forced them to wake up, get organized, and get involved in the political process,” Baqai said. “The nomination of Kamala Harris has also energized the entire immigrant community,” added Sabiha Rahman, co-founder of Friends of India Texas, another recently formed Asian political group. Additionally, the much politicized Census has encouraged community leaders to get involved with the Asian American population.
The result is that members of the community are much more aware of the benefits of participating and the risks of going uncounted. “Several community leaders took on the challenge to ensure every member of the community is counted. There is great concern about justice, polarization and political rhetoric,” Ashwin Ghatalia, a member of Indian American Coalition of Texas, said. The political momentum seems to have surely picked up. While it may be hard to find data proving that the Asian American Pacific Islanders can turn this particular election, the fact that many community leaders are getting involved and several diverse candidates are standing for office could indicate a coming shift in the Texan political spectrum.

How To Remember Last Year’s New Year Resolutions
By Sumaiya Malik This article suggests ways to remember last year’s resolutions and is a sequel to one I wrote in 2017,
“Why don’t people remember their New Year resolutions.” My point is that by remembering previous resolutions, one could check for progress and if progress is below
par, reinforce the same or add some more for the next year. One question arises. What if you remember your old resolutions, but realize you did not accomplish your goals? “I refuse to stack up. That’s absurd!” an avid reader who makes the same resolution every year said when asked if he would add one more to the list. This reader, who did not want to give his name, wants to just make the same resolution every year until he is satisfied with his progress. Nearly half of us are making New Year’s resolutions, but less than 10 percent of us are actually keeping
them. Whether it’s lack of motivation, lack of resources, or we just lose interest, it’s time to make a fresh start and figure out ways to finish what we have started. Here are 10 ways to stick to New Year’s resolutions and remember them throughout the year. 1. Involve your friends. If you are alone in your resolution, chances are you will forget about it. Involve others in the plan. 2. Make realistic goals. Think SMART: Specific, measurable, actionable, relevant and time bound. 3. Set up both short term and long term milestones to stay motivated throughout the year.
4. Check your commitment level before making the resolution. 5. Congratulate yourself for your progress. 6. Make goals that don’t impose significant financial burdens. 7. Cheat a little: Write your goals down in your cell phone or save them to your calendar. 8. Keep it simple. Maybe make only one. 9. Check for mid-year progress. 10. Believe in yourself.

HC4A Virtual Gala Brings International Stars And State Leaders Together (Continued From Page 09) Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett said, “These HC4A contributions not only provided immediate help for the fortunate beneficiaries but they represented a powerful statement about the commitment of this Hindu community to opportunities of advancement of anyone who may need them… Social distancing does not mean that we have to abandon social engagement or social justice.” Austin mayor Steve Adler, who has been associated with the organization since 2014, said, “I look to Hindu Charities as an example of great volunteerism in our city, the absolute dedication to the community it serves, the transparency to supporters, and their ability to find really effective and really meaningful ways to serve.”
The Gala features a star-studded cast of international and local dignitaries, including the following: • Anupam Kher, renowned, awardwinning actor currently starring in the NBC series “New Amsterdam” • Savan Kotecha, songwriter, nominated for Golden Globe and Grammy Awards; artists include Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Usher, Christina Aguilera, and Demi Lovato • Lloyd Doggett, Congressman representing Texas District #35 • Dr. V. Kasturi (Kash) Rangan, Malcolm P. McNair Professor of Marketing, Harvard Business School • Gururaj (Desh) Deshpande, venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of internet equipment manufacturer Sycamore Networks • Diane Nilan, founder of HEAR US; author; award-winning filmmaker and social justice activist
for children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness • Steve Jackobs, Executive Director of Capital IDEA, Austin • Dr. Richard Rhodes, Chancellor, Austin Community College • Anuradha Naimpalli, internationally recognized Bharatnatyam danseuse and inductee to Austin Arts Hall of Fame. Austin Community College and Capital Idea are two major partners of HC4A in their work. The Chancellor of Austin Community College, Dr. Richard Rhodes, said, “Not only does the scholarship provide financial support, but it also shows a student that someone believes in them. That is a powerful feeling. You have given them confidence to move forward.” Steven Jackobs, the executive di-
rector of Capital Idea said, “For ten years I have watched Harish and Dinesh and all of you grow HC4A to become the mature and ambitious organization it is today… It takes persistence and commitment to build something like HC4A, and you have done it.” Dr. Gitanjali Swamy who was recently named among the top most influential women in technology also praised the HC4A for its inclusive approach and partnership with other communities like the Jewish community in Austin to serve others. Housing and food are a struggle for low-income families this year. Job and other personal losses due to the pandemic are shattering the morale of young adults who want to learn a vocational skill. With ‘Education for Self-Reliance’ as the theme for the Gala, HC4A motivated it’s au-
dience to give the gift of scholarships and help families tide through economic hardships. HC4A is an all-volunteer organization that raises funds to help children and youth experiencing homelessness or in high-poverty situations in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles. All funds raised via the Gala will provide scholarships for students in those communities—donors designate where their dollars will go. HC4A’s scholarships support students in vocational programs that pay at least $40K upon graduation and have high placement rates. The organization’s goal is to help students begin a career that lifts them out of poverty and doesn’t leave them thousands of dollars in debt. The Virtual Gala is now available to watch on HC4A’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

New Research Highlights Cybersecurity Threats As Workforces Go Remote (StatePoint) The business landscape changed significantly in 2020, and new research suggests that cyber criminals took note. The latest threat intelligence from SonicWall Capture Labs, which reflects year-to-date findings through September 2020, shows that while overall malware volume declined for the third consecutive quarter, cybercriminals are increasingly using different means of attack. “For most of us, 2020 has been the year where we’ve seen economies almost stop, morning commutes end and traditional offices disappear,” says SonicWall president and CEO, Bill Conner. “Unfortunately, the overnight emergence of virtual offices has
given cybercriminals new attractive vectors to exploit.” What do businesses need to know? Consider these key findings from SonicWall:

COVID-19 led to an unexpected flood of devices on networks, resulting in an increase of potential threats to companies fighting to remain operational. SonicWall Capture Labs found a 30% increase in IoT malware attacks worldwide.
Malware Volume Dipping Global malware volume is steadily declining. In a year-over-year comparison through the third quarter, SonicWall researchers recorded a 39% drop worldwide. However, this doesn’t mean it’s going away. Conner warns this could represent a cyclical downturn that could shift course in short order. What’s more, malware authors and cybercriminals are still busy working to launch more sophisticated,
In the face of these challenges, how can you make remote-learning more rewarding and fun for your child? Consider the following tips and ideas: • Encourage video study sessions: Socializing is an invaluable aspect of a traditional school day. Unfortunately, remote-learning can be a lot more isolating. Have your child invite classmates to form a remote study group. Doing so will help reinforce lessons, make learning the material more interactive and provide a much-needed opportunity for students to socialize. • Reincorporate music education:

This web-based calculator also gives users the ability to create folders, organize and share work. These tools are free to educators and students and can eliminate the need for an expensive graphing calculator. To register or learn more, visit ClassPad.net.
• Schedule midday movement:
• Create digital masterpieces:
Physical education may no longer be part of your child’s curriculum, but you can still make time for movement. Schedule a screen-free block of time each day to replace gym class or recess. Encourage kids to move around and if possible, get some fresh air. They’ll return to their next class refreshed and focused.
Art is still an important subject for kids, even if it isn’t being offered this year. However, you don’t need to install a full-fledged art studio in your home for kids to be able to create artwork in a range of mediums. Digital apps mimic the act of drawing, painting, illustration, collage and more, helping to build a foundation of skills and lay the groundwork for further exploration.
• Master math at home: Math can be an especially tricky subject to master remotely. But new tools can help students grasp complex concepts. For example, ClassPad.net is a tool geared toward K-12 and beyond that exceeds the functionality of a calcula-

Whereas there were just 5,123 recorded Ryuk attacks reported through the third quarter of 2019, there were 67.3 million through the third quarter of 2020. This represents one-third of all 2020 ransomware attacks. “The increase of remote and mobile workforces appears to have increased the prevalence of Ryuk, resulting in financial losses and impacts on healthcare services,” says SonicWall vice president, Platform Architecture, Dmitriy Ayrapetov. “Ryuk is especially dangerous because it’s targeted, manual and often leveraged via a multi-stage attack preceded by Emotet and TrickBot malware. Therefore, if an organization has Ryuk, it’s a pretty good indication that it’s infested with several types of malware.” So how can businesses protect against Ryuk? Most IoT devices, like voiceactivated smart devices and door chimes, were not designed to prioritize security, making them susceptible to attack and supplying perpetrators with numerous entry points. “Employees once relied upon the safety that office networks provided, but the growth of remote and mobile workforces has extended distributed networks that serve both the house and home office,” says Conner. “Consumers need to consider whether devices like AC controls and baby monitors are safely deployed. For optimum protection, professionals using home offices, especially those in the C-suite, should consider segmenting home networks.” SonicWall threat intelligence data also concluded that cryptojacking, intrusion attempts and IoT maleware remain sources of opportunity for cybercriminals. To learn more about the latest threats and solutions, visit www. sonicwall.com. “Our findings show a relentless pursuit by cybercriminals to obtain what’s not rightfully theirs for monetary gain, economic dominance and global recognition,” says Conner. “As changing times require organizations to evolve, they’ll need seamless protection to address emerging cybersecurity threats.”

Want Extra Cash In Your Pocket? Try Saving On Car Insurance When it comes to saving money, it helps to cut out smaller expenses that add up over time – like frequent lunch dates, unused gym memberships or online subscriptions.
well spent. But that doesn’t mean you should pay more for it than you need to.
But if you really want to make a dent in your budget, you need think bigger.
1. Purchase safe car models. The cost to insure a particular car depends on several factors, but one is safety.
How big? Well, consider that after a home, a car is the single most expensive thing many people will ever buy, and cars need insurance. And you need that insurance if, for example, you injure someone in a crash or damage their car, or your own car is stolen or damaged in bad weather. Should such an incident occur, you’ll likely consider it money
Here are three ways to reduce car insurance expenses.
Insurance companies use information about you to determine your likelihood of having a crash and filing a claim. One thing they consider is your driving history, because they have found that past performance can
help predict what will happen in the future. If you’ve had speeding tickets, accidents or other violations within the last few years, your auto insurance rate may be higher than if you have a clean driving record. Research has also shown a correlation between good credit and good
The auto industry and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration test cars to determine their safety ratings, and insurance companies build on that information by reviewing customer claims data to see how the vehicles perform over time in the real world. The result? Safer vehicles tend to be less expensive to insure.
And depending on what type of car you drive and its features, (e.g. factory-installed airbags, anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes) you may be eligible for discounts.
2. Keep it clean.
“Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor circulation that puts people at risk for a wide range of foot problems,” says Barry I. Rosenblum, DPM, FACFAS, foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
• See a foot and ankle surgeon for regular foot exams to prevent complications. Ongoing preventive care can reduce the risk of toe or foot amputation by 45-85 percent. • Keep the blood flowing to your feet. Wiggle your toes and move your ankles for five minutes, two

Top Considerations For Combatting The Serious Effects Of Cool Weather Camping Digital Devices During COVID-19

Unfortunately, these tools can often be used in unhealthy ways to fill a void left by the loss of many typical school-year routines,” says Michele Havner, director of marketing, OurPact, a screen time monitoring app for parents.
fortable experience: • Between a rock and a cold place: Not only will the addition of a sleeping pad under your sleeping bag make your tent a comfier place to get some quality shut-eye after a long day of hiking, rappelling or fishing, it will also provide an important additional layer between you and the cold ground, helping keep you warm. Lightweight and compact, many models are inflatable and pack up neatly between uses. • Sure-footing: When trail conditions will potentially be slick, it’s always a good idea to bring along the equipment needed to stay sure-footed. Be sure to wear waterproof hiking shoes or boots with solid traction and consider using trekking poles for further stability. • Tech zone: Staying aware of shifting conditions is especially important when adventuring in the cooler months. Be sure to wear sunscreen on any exposed skin, along with lip balm containing SPF and sunglasses offering UV protection. If drinking cold water outdoors doesn’t appeal to you this time of year, heat beverages before hikes and stow them in an insulated thermos. The temperatures may be falling, but there is no need to rule out an outdoor-oriented trip. Proper gear can help ensure a successful adventure. (StatePoint)

Research has consistently shown that more screen time is often accompanied by health and wellness challenges like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, poor sleep and reduced physical activity. Havner says that parents can help kids build healthier relationships with digital devices in the following ways: • Being good role models: Parents are in many cases relying on digital devices to work from home and may also be facing some of the same issues as their children, including boredom and isolation. However, they can serve as good digital role models by setting aside screen-free time for other activities, like art, cooking, music, exercise, crossword puzzles, reading and more. • Avoiding being punitive: This extended situation has been stressful for parents and kids alike, so parents should try to take a compassionate approach to the situation. When engaging children on screen use, they can start the conversation on the right foot by acknowledging the many challenges and stressors that the “new normal” has created for young people.
Screen use before bed is associated with poor sleep due to the blue light emitted by digital devices, which can delay the release of sleep hormones. If possible, cap screen usage at least 30 minutes before bedtime. While many people like to keep devices on bedside tables, consider turning bedrooms into screen-free zones. • Making it happen: Devices have become so important to children, they may not realize the negative effects they are having on their health, making getting kids to actually put down devices often easier said than done. In fact, kids will often defy verbal

es such as frozen pipes, broken radiators, flooding and leaks. “Replace worn out weather stripping around windows and doors,” says AccuWeather senior meteorologist, David H. Dombek. “Also, ensure your rain gutters are cleared of leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters can lead to problems when it comes to snow, ice and below freezing temperatures.” To prevent clogged drains, you can make a simple, environmentallyfriendly mixture of salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar, then pour it into drains once a week. Opening cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom can help circulate warmer air around plumbing. In frigid conditions, let a bit of water drip from faucets, especially where pipes aren’t insulated. You can also unhook garden hoses before the first hard freeze to prevent busted pipes. For older furnaces that may need replacing, schedule a tune-up. Senior meteorologist Alan Reppert also makes sure to clear leaves and snow away from his heat pump to ensure air flow. “Anything in the way of air flow can affect your heating system’s efficiency,” he notes. To track rain, snow, cloud cover and potentially dangerous conditions so you can get the house winterized, use the mapping features on AccuWeather.com and on the app.
Meteorologist and emergency preparedness specialist Becky DePodwin also recommends checking AccuWeather’s RealFeel Temperature to determine what it’s actually going to feel like tableside. This can help you decide whether to venture outside, bring a blanket or opt for takeout. “Oftentimes in winter, especially if there’s any amount of wind going on, the temperature’s not going to be an adequate indication of what it feels like outside,” she says. seized by force from the wealthy and transferred to the government, dictatorship regimes were installed, and individual freedoms lost. Little wonder that America, with its pride in rugged individualism and liberty, is repelled by Communist ideology.
NOVEMBER 2020 Sudoku Answer Mr.Yudhveer Bagga
America is a capitalist economy where national wealth is owned and controlled by private individuals or businesses. While the concept of capitalism aligns well with the individualism that America is proud of, capitalism has an ugly underside. Pure capitalism leads to the concentration of economic power in a small group of wealthy individuals (such as monopolies), and rising economic inequality as the rich become increasingly powerful and able to exploit labor and consumers to their advantage. The American model of capitalism has resulted in staggering wealth inequality: 10% of US households now control 70% of US wealth, while the lower 50% control less than 2%. Clearly, American capitalism favors only a few at the top. Should America be afraid of social programs? No. Our social programs such as the public education system and Medicare are popular, have been around for decades, and have not resulted in America’s decline into socialism.
Clearly, Americans are not afraid of social programs, and further, have evidence that social programs do not lead to socialism. Numerous studies have shown that social programs benefit the economy as a whole. Why? Because these programs allow people to be productive and contribute to the nation’s economy. For example, a less educated workforce may be unable to earn sustainable wages and becomes a drain on society. Similarly, a less healthy workforce is less productive and may require state resources. Looking to the future Much of the resentment simmering in the American population is at least in part due to stagnant wages, staggering income inequality and a growing fear that greater skillsets are required to remain employed in a fast-paced world. It has never been more imperative to invest in social programs, whether healthcare, or job training for tomorrow’s workforce. It is incumbent on all of us to understand clearly that socialism is a boogeyman that is being exploited by certain politicians. What is proposed in America is not socialism, but social programs, and our need for these programs is real and immediate. The current pandemic has made the importance of universal healthcare very evident. This safety net can help the country progress on its economic goals while ensuring that the lower strata of the society have basic necessities such as access to affordable healthcare.

Statue Of Unity
The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman and independence activist Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), who was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home minister of independent India and adherent of Mahatma Gandhi during the non-violent Indian Independence movement.
2018, the 143rd anniversary of Sardar Patel’s birth. The statue depicts Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement, the first home minister as well as the first Deputy Prime Minister of independent India, and responsible for the integration of hundreds of princely states into the modern Republic of India. The Statue of Unity is an enlarged version of this statue in the Ahmedabad International Airport. After studying statues of Patel across the country, a team of historians, artists, and academics chose a design submitted by the Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar. The Statue of Unity is a much larger replica of a statue of the leader installed at Ahmedabad International Airport.
Patel was highly respected for his leadership in uniting 562 princely states of India with a major part of the former British Raj to form the single Union of India. The statue is located in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres (597 feet). It is located on the Narmada River in the Kevadiya colony, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of the city of Vadodara and 150 kilometres (93 mi) from Surat. The project was first announced in 2010 and the construction of the statue started in October 2013 by Larsen & Toubro, with a total construction cost of ₹2,989 crore (₹29.89 billion; US$437 million). It was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, and was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October
AKBAR AND BIRBAL STORIES The Other Guest
Once, a rich man invited Birbal for dinner. When Birbal arrived at the man’s house, he
“Oh, I didn’t know you had invited so many other guests.” “No sir, Birbal. These are not guests, but my employees who are joining me for dinner tonight. But one among them is a guest just like you. Can you guess who?” said the man with a smile. “Please tell them a joke, and I will tell you who the guest is,” replied Birbal. The man told a joke, and all the guests in the house burst into laughter. “That man over there is the other guest,” Birbal said pointing towards a man. “Yes! He is the one. But how did you guess it?” the amazed host asked. “The joke you said was not so funny. Still, everyone laughed.
noticed that there were several people already present.
But the guest only smiled, and that is how I could identify him,” replied the smart Birbal.
Commenting on the design, Ram Sutar’s son, Anil Sutar explains that, “the expression, posture and pose justify the dignity, confidence, iron will as well as kindness that his personality exudes. The head is up, a shawl flung from
shoulders and hands are on the side as if he is set to walk”. Three models of the design measuring 3 feet (0.91 m), 18 feet (5.5 m), and 30 feet (9.1 m) were initially created. Once the design of the largest model was approved, a detailed 3D-scan was produced which formed the basis for the bronze cladding cast in a foundry in China. Patel’s dhoti-clad legs and the use of sandals for footwear rendered the design thinner at the base than at the top thereby affecting its stability. This was addressed by maintaining a slenderness ratio of 16:19 rather than the customary 8:14 ratio of other tall buildings. The statue is built to withstand winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour (110 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale which are at a depth of 10 km and within a radius of 12 km of the statue. This is aided by the use of two 250 tonne tuned mass dampers ensuring maximum stability. The total height of the structure is 240 m (790 ft), with a base of 58 m (190 ft) and the statue measuring 182 m (597 ft). The height of 182 metres was specifically chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
Make A Difference – Holiday Season By Vidya Kumar
Finally there seems to be light at the end of tunnel for the people world over. Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZenaca –Oxford have had breakthrough with vaccine for Covid-19. This is really very good news in recent weeks and we all should be thankful that so quickly the vaccine has been tested and in the near future it shall be available for the masses. Meanwhile, restraint should be exercised during the holiday season as the cases are steadily going up in USA. One knows about the Covid fatigue and not being able to entertain or attend social events and moreover for more than nine months we have been talking about covid-19 does make one bold enough to cross over the restrictions of one’s safety. Especially as in December we are used to having parties, holidays and travel one tends to forget that we need to exercise caution and show restraint in all the above activities unless it is really required. Maybe, as we are getting used to work from home, online meetings and on-line hosting of live events why not innovate new ways of socializing and have virtual parties? As a first step to get into the mood of party maybe while inviting for the virtual party first step as a host is to have best prize/award for best dressed family or couple? Finally, as long as we are enjoying with the people that we love the most whether online or in person we need to maintain social distance and wear masks until everyone is able to beat this covid. Happy holidays to each and every one of you.

By Dushant Reddy The election season of 2020 might be over in most of the country but citizens of Austin City Council District 6 are still deciding their representative. The run-off election on December 15 may very well bring a fresh voice in the Austin City Council through Kelly Mackenzie who finished second in the general election on Nov 4 among a pool of four contenders.

Kelly Mackenzie private enterprise from becoming more competitive. I will work to raise our homestead exemption and insist on a complete up-and-down audit of every city department. We hear a lot of citizens in Austin saying they are very disturbed by
in San Francisco and Seattle passing resolutions against India for passing laws to shelter persecuted minorities from neighboring countries. This has alienated many residents over there. I do not believe City Hall should
It is long-past time to secure funding to turn the RM 620 corridor into a freeway and work toward building a series of over- and under-passes along Highway 360. Expanding IH-35 in a way that does not penalize motorists or
In the midst of her busy campaign schedule, we got an opportunity to talk to her , and she was happy to answer some of the questions we had for her.
Our community members are very concerned about the growing problem of affordability and homelessness in our city, and very disappointed with the current Austin city council not doing enough to tackle it.
the combative measures taken by the current council members towards the Police Department like the steep cuts to their budget. What do you plan to do about this if elected, and how would you reassure the public on keeping our neighborhoods safe?
Can you tell us how you would approach this problem , and some steps that you would take to improve the situation?
It’s not okay that we are back to the staffing levels from 2015 -- Austin has grown exponentially since then.
While I certainly don’t believe that being homeless is illegal, homelessness can expose a person to many illicit activities (such as drug use and human trafficking) and dangerous situations (including violent crime and a greater chance of being involved in a pedestrian accident with an automobile).
Our law enforcement officers need to be fully and adequately funded, but also supported during this time of increased violent crime, vandalism, and expansion of social services.
The best thing we can do for now is to rescind the homeless camping ordinance and restore funding for our law enforcement community who are often on the front lines addressing homelessness. In terms of affordability, the answer is as it has always been: lower the tax burden that keeps the workingclass away from our urban core and loosen the regulations that hinder
We hear in the current COVID19 situation, many school teachers are forced to quit as they are not being given the opportunity to take classes online? Do you think the city council can do anything to help with this situation? Being the mother of an inquisitive 11-year-oId daughter, I believe strongly that our teachers are superheroes! They work long hours to support the next generation of Austinites, whether in public schools, charter schools, private schools, or home school consortiums -- and whether online or in-person.
Thank you Ms. Mackenzie for taking your time to interact with us. It’s my pleasure. Thank you for asking me.
fully scrutinize all budget items brought before the Council.
We need better training for officers to avoid violent incidents. Reforms are necessary, but APD cannot easily address its internal problems without the staff and resources to do so. What is your take on few city councils across the nation wasting their time by getting involved in international issues with a short sighted view of realities while ignoring pressing issues at home? For eg. We have seen city councils
be a bully pulpit for Washington D.C. politics, nor is the Austin City Council the United Nations. The Austin City Council should focus on our city and our residents and businesses. We have an amazing city that has equally amazing individuals and families from various backgrounds and nationalities. Let’s get on the ground and talk with our citizens and find out what their needs are. The world is coming to Austin, and this election is our chance to make it -- our little corner of our increasingly interconnected world -- a much better place. What are some of your ideas to tackle traffic congestion in our city? Austin definitely needs better infrastructure solutions, especially with “rush hour” having become a four-hour ordeal. With our ever-growing population, we must support the growing need for citizens to be able to move around the city.
cause hazardous conditions is also a priority.
Unfortunately, our city leaders are spending their time on furthering their own careers and not addressing the needs of the people of Austin.
Building better east-west connectors should be a priority -- our residential streets have become chokepoints for motorists simply trying to get across town.
When I’m elected I will answer every email, every call and spend active time talking with my constituents listening to their needs and how I can make their lives better.
I will strongly encourage ridesharing services and innovative solutions to our growing transportation needs, especially when it comes to access to our international airport.
If there are ways the city can step in and help our schools I want to hear them.
Do you see any opportunity to cut wasteful spending in our city budget, and how much do you think would help us avoid property tax increases? Having a voice on the Council to take a stand against massive tax hikes such as Project Connect is a good start. I believe a full audit of all city services will give us plenty of ideas on where to insist on greater efficiency. I will appoint a staff that will care-
In terms of Austin ISD, I am grieved that our family population in the urban center is dropping so much that entire campuses are closing -- this includes the oldest continuously operating school in Texas, Pease Elementary. How is it that in one of the top boomtowns in the world our schools are dying on the vine? Finding ways to bring back families and make life affordable in Austin is key toward rebuilding our schools and attracting the best teaching talent.
