Community Leaders Launch New Efforts To Help Indian Americans Run, Win, And Lead
Bold new initiatives will build a nationwide pipeline of Indian American leaders in politics, policy, and government. WASHINGTON, DC – Following historic wins at the ballot box in November 2017, a group of Indian American philanthropists, community leaders, and political operatives have come together to formally launch the Indian American Impact Project (“Impact Project”) and Indian American Impact Fund (“Impact Fund”), collectively known as “Impact.” Co-founded by Raj Goyle, CEO of Bodhala and former member of the Kansas State House, and Deepak Raj, Chairman of Pratham USA and founder of the Raj Center on Indian Economic Policies at Columbia University, these bold new initiatives will help talented and patriotic Indian Americans run for office, win, and lead. Raj Goyle will chair the Impact Project, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization focused on leadership development and training, while Deepak Raj will chair the Impact Fund, a political action committee
that will endorse and support viable candidates who reflect the Indian American community’s values. “Despite rapid growth and professional success, for too long Indian Americans have been underrepresented in elected office from state capitols to the U.S. Congress,” said Goyle. “As a result, our needs, concerns, and priorities often go unheard in the halls of power. At a time when our community and our values are under attack by xenophobic rhetoric and regressive policies, it is more critical than ever that Indian Americans build and wield political power to fight back.” “This is our time,” added Raj. “Across the country, a record number of Indian Americans are running for office. We can’t leave it to chance that they will win on their own. We owe them our support — and we have a plan to help them run, win, and lead.” As of January 2018, five Indian Americans currently serve in the United States Congress: Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Repre-
sentatives Ami Bera (D-CA), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Ro Khanna (D-CA), and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-CA).
(DLCC). Vikas Raj, Managing Director of Accion Venture Lab, will serve as a non-voting observer on both boards.
Impact is also tracking an additional 60 Indian Americans currently serving in state and local office as state legislators, mayors, city council members, judges, and other elected positions.
Both initiatives are led by Gautam Raghavan, who previously served

Set up a Work Space While you should be prepared to create wherever the spirit moves you, having a dedicated workspace at home is a good idea. Be sure it’s comfortable, away from distractions and brightly lit. Make it a space you want to spend time. Add flowers or plants, artwork and other items that inspire you.
Me Time A little bit of me-time goes a long way. Carve out some space each week for your own pursuits beyond the time spent working on projects. Learn where and when you do your best thinking, brainstorming and reflection. Is it on a morning walk through the park? Do you need complete silence? Don’t be afraid to request some solitude from loved ones. This may also be a good opportunity to disconnect from your devices for a bit. With this in mind, experts are identifying new ways to promote nerve health and comfort by inhibiting inflammatory compounds in nerve cells, and at the same time, encouraging healthy neurotransmitter levels in the brain.

A screen protector is also a great idea, guarding against scratches and residue. Get Covered With potential repair costs on the rise, protection plans are becoming more important than ever.
With its all-glass design, you may be wondering if it’s worth the investment.
For example, the iPhone X has a thinner, costlier OLED screen that’s more expensive to replace, a smaller logic board, multiple cables, and a split battery that’s more difficult to remove.
Recent tests conducted by SquareTrade using scientific robots to drop, bend, tumble, and dunk devices, revealed the iPhone X to be one of the most breakable iPhone models ever made, shattering on its first face down drop. “Without taking a few key precautions, consumers are likely going to spend more than the $1,000 they’ve already invested in their phone over their devices’ lifetime,” says Jason Siciliano, vice president global creative director at Square-

How To Find An Affordable Home In Today’s Market Affordable housing is in high demand in cities and counties nationwide. Experts say that areas grappling with affordable housing issues may find factory-built homes to be a powerful tool in addressing this need.

Built in a factory and delivered to home sites, this efficient process translates into lower production costs that are passed on to the consumer. The good news is while manufactured homes cost less than site-built homes they are just as high quality. The average new manufactured home costs around $70,600. The cost for a smaller new single-section home can be as low as $20,000. In 2016, manufactured homes accounted for 80 percent of all new homes sold under $150,000. Unfortunately, when many people think of manufactured housing, the old stereotype of a run-down trailer park enters their minds. However, most of the more than 37,000 manufactured housing communities in the U.S. are a far cry from that
rents for the homeowner. • Affordable homeownership, along with many of its benefits, including control over home and yard improvements, as well as convenient parking. • A sense of community. In many communities, there are social or activity clubs, fitness amenities, and friendly and caring neighbors. Indeed, “sense of belonging” is among the most frequent responses about why residents enjoy living in a land-lease community.
• The option to rent an existing home in the community or place your own home in the community. • Provided services, which often include professional property management, care and maintenance
• The possibility of not paying real estate taxes. While it varies stateto-state, residents of land-lease manufactured home communities often don’t pay real estate taxes, but rather, pay a personal-property tax, offsetting the cost of land-lease
Newer manufactured homes come in a variety of architectural styles and exterior finishes that will suit most any buyer’s desires, as well as customization opportunities, including interior features like vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and state-of-the-art kitchens and baths. They also feature enhanced energy efficiency in an era of rising energy costs, thanks to upgraded insulation and more efficient heating and cooling systems than homes from decades ago. Smart buyers also are
turning to ENERGY STAR-labeled manufactured homes for additional savings. Modern manufactured homes are among the safest housing choices today, as homes must adhere to strict federal building standards. All aspects of construction are continually inspected by professionally trained third-parties, and homes feature smoke detectors, and limited combustible materials around furnaces, water heaters and kitchen ranges, as well as wind resistance in areas prone to hurricane-force winds. “The need for quality, affordable housing has never been greater. However, today’s manufactured homes are high-quality and cost up to 50 percent less per square foot than conventional site-built homes,” says Richard Jennison, president and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Institute. “These savings are allowing more Americans to own a home in the face of an ever-widening housing affordability gap.” (StatePoint)

Spending too much and saving too little? Getting out of your current financial rut can feel daunting
without the right habits and tools. Here are five ways to improve your financial plan now. 1. Set goals. What do your plans include? A car or house? An expensive getaway? Long-term retirement savings or a college fund for your children? Start by identifying your goals clearly. Then, figure out how to get there. 2. Plan smarter, not harder. The right tools on-hand can make the

Consider such tools as a multi-functional desktop printing calculator, such as Casio’s HR-150TMPlus, which features a 12-digit easy-to-read display and can print 2.4 lines per second. With two-color printing in red and black, exchange calculation and tax calculation, it can help you stay organized and accountable.
3. Follow the money. Take a deep look into your spending habits. While A $5 cup of coffee or a lunch out with coworkers may not seem like much at the time, indulging in these expenditures five days a week will really add up over time. Think of all the money that can be put towards savings by making small changes to everyday habits. For example, pick one or two days a week to enjoy a lunch out with
friends, but bring your own lunch the other days of the week. Skip the pricey latte and get yourself a thermos, so you can enjoy coffee brewed at home on your commute. 4. Analyze your expenses. New apps and websites that connect to all your finances, including bank accounts, savings, credit cards, student loans and more, can help you track your expenses and create and manage budgets. Graphs and charts help you understand all facets of your finances, so you can be more in tune with where your money is going, helping you navigate a plan to use it more wisely. 5. Make a change. Want to put your money to good, longterm use in a way that won’t put a strain on your wallet? A selection of apps automatically roundup the leftover change from purchases made by you with your debit cards, and puts that change towards something else -- like student loans or investments. Sixth Grader Ismayl Haq Makes His Love For DIY Slime Into A Business!
(Contiued From Page 01) to his schoolmates, friends and friends of friends. Most of his customers are fourth, fifth and sixth graders. Business is good. His charges $2 for a pint of slime, much lower than the market price $7. A few weeks ago, he paid back his dad for all the expenses incurred in purchasing the four ingredients and still had a jar of over $40 left from the sales. At one point Ismayl commissioned some classmates to advertise his slime at lunchtime in school to attract more students in lieu of 10% of sales per week, the amount going up to $10 in some weeks.
According the the NYTimes (June 23, 2017), “There’s a thriving nationwide market for slime, and the demand is met by children aged 8 to 12, teenagers and young adults, who sell it at school or online…”
Ismayl ventured into the business in steps. He enjoyed watching the fun people were having with slime, ‘a sticky substance dumped on Nickelodeon guests.’ He wanted lots of slime like they showed on TV, but it was expensive. When his mom agreed to purchase all the ingredients, Ismayl started experimenting and perfected the recipe following Youtube videos. “I used to watch videos on social media about slime crunching (the process of squishing slime in your hands using fingers and your palm),” said Ismayl while poking and stretching a tub of slime he had created in front of Austin South Asian. He followed the videos and made slime at home. Viola! After trial and error it was a success. “Time to show it to friends,” thought Ismayl.
He took some to school and when his friends watched him have fun playing with DIY (do it yourself) slime, they wanted him to make some for them too. “$2 a pint,” blurted Ismayl and he was in business. Ismayl thought of the chats the family had been having about generating some income apart from pocket money and that inspired him. Slime was relaxing and cool to the touch. Best part, he enjoyed making it and hearing the cracking sound of the slime when he manipulated it. What could be better than selling it too and making money? According to Ismayl, there are four varieties of Slime: Normal slime, fluffy slime, jiggley slime and butter slime. Butter slime (a variation of normal slime). Ismayl’s fluffy slime recipe

Dr. Zarmeena Vendal Speaks At The Womens March By Sumaiya Malik
On Saturday, January 20th, about ten thousand people participated in the Womens March at the State Capital. last year’s march was ‘a grass-roots outgrowth of frustration in the political process after the election to the presidency of Donald Trump, who many view as antagonistic to women’s issues (Downtown Austin Patch).’
This year, the march covered women’s issues as well as those of immigrants, members of the LGBTQ community and the environment.
We are going to fight for each other’s right to be different from each other.”
Marchers gathered at Austin City Hall and marched toward the Texas State Capitol where Women leaders delivered speeches and rallied the crowd.
She emphasized the importance of tolerance, respect and freedom of choice, values that are engrained in the life of the United States, but are right now under threat of being overlooked.
Dr. Zarmeena Vendal, owner of Westlake Eye Specialists and an active member of the Pakistani American Austin community was invited to speak at the March.
She called out to all her sisters from all faiths Muslims, Jewish, Hindu, Bahaai, Athiests,, Christians, Sikhs… that we are women first and we will stand together.
Dr. Vendal represented “those Muslims in our community who do support women’s rights” and added that these Muslims are a part of the Womens March. The crowd cheered and clapped!
Women leaders such as State Rep. Donna Howard, a Democrat from Austin and Former state Sen. Wendy Davis were first at the podium.
Dr. Vendal elaborated about the people of the United States, “We are different. We choose to be different.
Texas Handmaids, LGBT community, and Planned Parenthood also spoke at the steps of the State Capital Building. Dr. Vendal hopes that the participation in the Womens March will lead to more participation at the polls and people will vote to make a change. She said that women seemed to rally together and understand the importance of that. Later, she wrote on her Facebook page, “Got to speak at the 2018 Women’s March today... amazing experience, fortunate to share with my kids. MARCH ON!!!!”
When the slime stops sticking to the bowl, its time to use your hands to mix. Add saline solution if its still sticky. The slime is ready for you. “First time I made it right I was so happy! It was very fun! I could crunch, play, swirl my own slime,” Ismayl shared his excitement. Variations *Jiggley slime - instead of shaving foam use ½ cup of water. * Buttery slime - add clay to any of the slimes. You can actually spread it on a surface like butter and it will come off. *Normal slime – remove shaving foam from the fluffy slime recipe. Who knows where this might lead, but it’s impressive to watch this whizz kid talk about the chemical reaction between boric acid and baking soda. It’s also inspiring to watch the 11 year old create a successful business model through trial and error.

Bad Breath In Pets Could Be A Sign Of Poor Health
If you’ve ever experienced dry mouth, you know how uncomfortable it can be.
medications increase the risk of developing complications due to dry mouth by 40 percent.
Unfortunately, your pet can get dry mouth too, and it can lead to more serious issues down the line and can also be a sign of more serious current health issues.

While most pet parents are not aware their furry friends have dry mouth because they may still drool even with the condition, watching out for bad breath can help, as it is often a red flag that something is wrong.
Experts say that you don’t need to wait until this becomes an issue to protect your pet’s health. “Prevention is always the best medicine,” says Pamela K. Bosco, president of Pet King Brands.
Dry mouth is a condition where saliva loses its protective benefits and leads to an overgrowth of odor-causing bacteria and plaque accumulation, as well as increases the risk of periodontal disease.
Bosco recommends Oratene Brushless Oral Care for pets, an easy-to-use oral care product line that doesn’t require brushing.

According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career. How much did they pay? Students spent an average of $24,812 on grad school in academic year 201617, and more than three-fourths of them (77 percent) paid for it, at least in part, by borrowing.
In response, Sallie Mae announced a new Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students that will award four $20,000 scholarships in 2018.
Funds borrowed by students covered more than half of the cost (53 percent), while money students earned, including income and savings, paid for 24 percent.

5 Things To Consider When Buying A Stroller A stroller is one of the most essential pieces of baby gear, typically needed right from the start and used for several years. However, with so many stroller varieties available and a wide range of features to consider, it can be hard to figure out which one is right for your family.
that recline to a near flat position until they have head control and can sit up on their own. Even for older babies or toddlers, a reclining seat is a plus for comfort.

to a double,” says Varano.
Look for a stroller that can grow with your family, such as the Graco Uno2Duo Stroller and Travel System.
“The extension adds room for a second seat and offers a platform for toddlers to ride along.
As an added benefit, the stroller features a multi-position reclining main seat that can convert to an infant bassinet or pram. This stroller is now exclusively available at Babies“R”Us.
Erin Varano, brand marketing director at trusted baby and children gear manufacturer Graco, offers these five key questions to consider when buying a stroller: Does the Stroller Meet Safety Standards? Look for a stroller that has been certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to ensure it meets current safety standards. Also, do your research beforehand to make sure it hasn’t been recalled. Avoid this question by buying from a reputable retailer. Does the Stroller Have an Adjustable Seat? Newborns need seats
A second seat or infant car seat gives parents added functionality with a total of 22 ways to ride.”
Can the Stroller Accommodate Your Car Seat? An infant car seat and a stroller that come together are called a travel system. Make sure to check that the seat’s recline mechanism is easy-to-use and firmly locks into the recline position.
This new stroller is out-of-the-box ready for one child, but simply extends to accommodate two children.
How Versatile is the Stroller? Single strollers with the ability to convert to a double are useful as well
“We designed this stroller with a 5-inch extension so that it can easily transition from a single stroller
Buying a travel system is the simplest way to ensure stroller and infant car seat compatibility. However, if they don’t come together, you can often buy an adapter that connects them. Keep this in mind as you choose these items.
Is the Stroller Easy to Maneuver? Look for front wheels that swivel. This swivel action will make it easier to turn. Again, head to a store to test this feature out in person. You should be able to easily push the stroller in a straight line using one hand. Brakes also play a part in maneuverability. You want brakes that are easy to operate even if you are wearing open-toed shoes. Finding the right stroller for your family requires research and testing. Investing the time beforehand and keeping key features top-of-mind during your search will make the process less overwhelming and hopefully lead you to your perfect stroller match. (StatePoint)

How The Average Citizen Can Help Bring About Friendlier Politics At a divisive moment in our nation’s history, you may be wondering how average citizens can help bring about friendlier politics. Experts suggest that it starts with finding common ground among those whose opinions differ from you.
• Get involved. Attend city council meetings and town hall meetings. Join the PTA. But don’t just show up -- make
• Get in touch. From petitions to postcards to calls and texts, there are numerous ways to get in touch with your elected officials at every level of government.
Ira Shapiro, a former ambassador who has held senior positions in the U.S. Senate, recently authored “Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country?” in order to explore the state of U.S. politics and its future.
Their job is to overcome them, finding common ground to take collective action in the national interest.” Citizens can apply this principle in a number of ways:
“The best remedy of all, on both the national and local levels, is to support candidates who are problem solvers and consensus builders, not partisan warriors. Look for the candidates who put the country, or the community, first -- above party allegiance or personal aggrandizement,” stresses Shapiro, who also serves as a trade law and global policy consultant.
Of the U.S. Senate, his area of expertise, he says, “America is deeply divided. But the men and women of the Senate should not mirror -- or worse, inflame -- the nation’s divisions.

Encourage your representatives to work constructively with their colleagues in an effort to de-polarize politics and ultimately be more effective at their jobs. • Speak out. Organize or attend a rally. Raise money for a political cause that mattes to you.
HIIT workouts alternate a quick, intense period of exercise, such as running or cycling, followed by a short, active recovery. Shoe to try: A lightweight cross training shoes with a stable base -such as a Nike Flex Trainer -- are a good selection when it comes to HIIT workouts. • Bodyweight training: The benefits of bodyweight training are seemingly endless. From pushups to squats, these exercises require no additional equipment and can be done anywhere and performed with many modifications. Get creative with your family by doing a circuit of your favorite bodyweight exercises in the park. Shoe to try: A shoe with a mesh and synthetic upper material is designed to keep feet cool. Find this feature in a style, such as the New Balance, which also have special midsoles to ensure comfort from start to finish. New footwear is a great way for each family member to show his or her style, while getting motivated to meet fitness goals.

Make A Difference – Prioritize
By Vidya Kumar
Also due to stress my neck started bothering me and my health also went down south. I could not sleep and because of my sleepless ness I put on weight. I had no clue how to get out of this vicious cycle. There I was having day after day getting stressed and the ‘to do’ list ever increasing and I started visiting doctors which resulted in me taking medications. One fine day in the morning I decided to trash the ‘to do’ list. Then for a few days there was nothing to look at and get stressed so I started feeling normal. When start feeling normal there is always at the back of your mind that you are missing something important. I realized that I have tasks to do but there is no inclination for me to do anything about it. At that point I decided that instead of having a list to have just one task as ‘to do’ and until it is complete I will not think of another task. So up went the task of just one ‘to do’. Every single day I stared at it but it did not bother me so much. And finally after three weeks I was able to complete it and strike it off. I felt a load off my back and really was happy for the first time. I had learnt the art of prioritizing my tasks. Just one task at a time. It worked for me finally!!

Frankly, it’s quite an industry as South Asians spend thousands of dollars in this city alone to import the traditional clothes. What’s most interesting is the diaspora of American trends in Pakistan and vice versa too! American fashion is showing hints of the luxurious fabric and styles of the east. The result is a global fashion that can be used in a multipurpose way. Reflections of Pakistani trends in American fashion 1. Arc de Triomphe Akbar And Birbal
The Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly named Place de l’Étoile — the étoile or “star” of the juncture formed by its twelve radiating avenues. The Arc de Triomphe should not be confused with a smaller arch, the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, which stands west of the Louvre. The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. As the central cohesive element of the Axe historique (historic axis, a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route running from the courtyard of the Louvre to the Grande Arche de la Défense), the Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and its iconographic program pits heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail. It set the tone for public monuments with triumphant patriotic messages. Inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus, the Arc de Triomphe has an overall height of 50 metres (164 ft), width of 45 m (148 ft), and depth of 22 m (72 ft), while its large vault is 29.19 m (95.8 ft) high and 14.62 m (48.0 ft) wide. The smaller transverse vaults are 18.68 m (61.3 ft) high and 8.44 m (27.7 ft) wide. Three weeks after the Paris victory parade in 1919 (marking the end of hostilities in World War I), Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane under the arch’s primary vault, with the event captured on newsreel. Paris’s Arc de Triomphe was the tallest triumphal arch until the completion of the Monumento a la Revolución in Mexico City in 1938, which is 67 metres (220 ft) high. The Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang, completed in 1982, is modelled on the Arc de Triomphe
and is slightly taller at 60 m (197 ft).
The Arc is located on the right bank of the Seine at the centre of a dodecagonal configuration of twelve radiating avenues. It was commissioned in 1806 after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon at the peak of his fortunes. Laying the
foundations alone took two years and, in 1810, when Napoleon entered Paris from the west with his bride Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, he had a wooden mockup of the completed arch constructed. The architect, Jean Chalgrin, died in 1811 and the work was taken over by Jean-Nicolas Huyot. During the Bourbon Restoration, construction was halted and it would not be completed until the reign of King Louis-Philippe, between 1833 and 1836, by the architects Goust, then Huyot, under the direction of Héricart de Thury. On 15 December 1840, brought back to France from Saint Helena, Napoleon’s remains passed under it on their way to the Emperor’s final resting place at the Invalides. Prior to burial in the Panthéon, the body of Victor Hugo was displayed under the Arc during the night of 22 May 1885. The sword carried by the Republic in the Marseillaise relief broke off on the day, it is said, that the Battle of Verdun began in 1916. The relief was immediately hidden by tarpaulins to conceal the accident and avoid any undesired ominous interpretations. On 7 August 1919, Charles Godefroy successfully flew his biplane under the Arc. Jean Navarre was the pilot who was tasked to make the flight, but
he died on 10 July 1919 when he crashed near Villacoublay while training for the flight.
The Wicked Barber’s Plight
Following its construction, the Arc de Triomphe became the rallying point of French troops parading after successful military campaigns and for the annual Bastille Day Military Parade. Famous victory marches around or under the Arc have included the Germans in 1871, the French in 1919, the Germans in 1940, and the French and Allies in 1944 and 1945.
As we all know, Birbal was not only Emperor Akbar’s favorite minister but also a minister dearly loved by most of the commoners, because of his ready wit and wisdom. People used to come to him from far and wide for advice on personal matters too. However, there was a group of ministers that were jealous of his growing popularity and disliked him intensely. They outwardly showered him with praise and compliments, but on the inside, they began to hatch a plot to kill him.
A United States postage stamp of 1945 shows the Arc de Triomphe in the background as victorious American troops march down the Champs-Élysées and U.S. airplanes fly overhead on 29 August 1944. After the interment of the Unknown Soldier, however, all military parades (including the aforementioned post-1919) have avoided marching through the actual arch. The route taken is up to the arch and then around its side, out of respect for the tomb and its symbolism. Both Hitler in 1940 and de Gaulle in 1944 observed this custom. By the early 1960s, the monument had grown very blackened from coal soot and automobile exhaust, and during 1965–1966 it was cleaned through bleaching. In the prolongation of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, a new arch, the Grande Arche de la Défense, was built in 1982, completing the line of monuments that forms Paris’s Axe historique. After the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, the Grande Arche is the third arch built on the same perspective. In 1995, the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria placed a bomb near the Arc de Triomphe which wounded 17 people as part of a campaign of bombings.
One day they approached the king’s barber with a plan. As the barber was extremely close to the king, they asked him to help them get rid of Birbal permanently. And of course, they promised him a huge sum of money in return. The wicked barber readily agreed. The next time the king required his services, the barber started a conversation about the emperor’s father who he also used to serve. He sang praises of his fine, silky-smooth hair. And then as an afterthought, he asked the king that as he was enjoying such great prosperity, had he made an attempt to do anything for the welfare of his ancestors? The king was furious at such impertinent stupidity and told the barber that it was not possible to do anything because they were already dead. The barber mentioned that he knew of a magician who could come of help. The magician could send a person up to heaven to enquire about his father’s welfare. But of course this person would have to be chosen carefully; he would have to be intelligent enough to follow the magician’s instructions as well as make on-the-spot decisions. He must be wise, intelligent and responsible. The barber then suggested the best person for the job – the wisest of all ministers, Birbal. The king was very excited about hearing from his dead father and asked the barber to go ahead and make the arrangements imme-
diately. He asked him what was needed to be done. The barber explained that they would take Birbal in a procession to the burial grounds and light a pyre. The magician would then chant some ‘mantras’ as Birbal would ascend to the heavens through the smoke. The chanting would help protect Birbal from the fire. The king happily informed Birbal of this plan. Birbal said that he thought it a brilliant idea and wanted to know the brain behind it. When learning that it was the barber’s idea, he agreed to go to heaven on condition that he be given a large sum of money for the long journey as well as one month’s time to settle his family so that they had no trouble while he was gone. The king agreed to both conditions. In the duration of this month, he got a few trustworthy men to build a tunnel from the funeral grounds to his house. And on the day of the ascension, after the pyre had been lit, Birbal escaped through the concealed door of the tunnel. He disappeared into his house where he hid for a few months while his hair and beard grew long and unruly. In the meantime, his enemies were rejoicing as they thought that they had seen the last of Birbal. Then one day after many, many months Birbal arrived at the palace with news of the king’s father. The king was extremely pleased to see him and ready with a barrage of questions. Birbal told the king that his father was in the best of spirits and had been provided with all the comforts except one. The king wanted to know what was lacking because now he thought he had found a way to send things and people to heaven. Birbal answered that there were no barbers in heaven, which is why even he was forced to grow his own beard. He said that his father had asked for a good barber. So the king decided to send his own barber to serve his father in heaven. He called both the barber and the magician to prepare to send him to heaven. The barber could say absolutely nothing in his own defense as he was caught in his own trap. And once the pyre was lit he died on the spot. Nobody dared to conspire against Birbal again.

Brain Tumor Expert Named Neurosurgery Chair
Dr. John S. Kuo, an internationally known neurosurgeon-scientist who specializes in brain tumors, will be the inaugural chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, and the surgical director of the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences, for Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Kuo comes to Dell Med from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is professor of neurological surgery and director of the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program. He also leads the Central Nervous System Tumors Group at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, nationally known for cancer care, research and community involvement. In 12 years there, he has led and expanded multiple high-quality multidisciplinary teams — delivering clinical care for brain tumors, pituitary tumors and hydrocephalus — and has advanced discoveries from lab research to clinical trials. “John is a nationally known innovator in neurosurgery and cancer research, as well as a dedicated
teacher and compassionate physician,” said Dr. Clay Johnston, inaugural dean of the Dell Medical School. “He exemplifies Dell Med’s mission — to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy — by centering care around people’s health and accelerating the powerhouse research happening at the medical school and across the UT Austin campus.” Kuo is among an elite group of neurosurgeons who have earned research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. His research has been featured in journals such as Nature Reviews and Science Translational Medicine. He has been invited as visiting professor and speaker at institutions including Massachusetts General Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center. His honors include being named among “America’s Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly and receiving the 2015 Preuss Award for best tumor research at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He also is an endowed visiting professor of surgery at National
University of Singapore and was elected to the Society of University Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. He serves as the tumor editor for World Neurosurgery and Operative Neurosurgery and as chair of the membership committee for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. “It’s an honor to join Dell Med, with its profound focus on people and health. I’m excited to join Dean Clay Johnston and colleagues to build an advanced academic clinical care, teaching and research program that advances the school’s transformative mission, and to help create a world-class Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences,” Kuo said. “By building on — and adding to — the discoveries and innovations taking place across UT Austin, I believe we will make a real difference for people in Central Texas and beyond who are wrestling with challenging problems such as brain tumors, stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions.”
Kuo immigrated to New York City at age 9 from Taiwan, then graduated with highest honors from Harvard College and won a full scholarship to pursue medical and doctorate degrees from a joint Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) program. After advanced training at the University of Southern California and University of Toronto, Kuo was recruited to UW-Madison, where he created successful clinical and research programs by assembling multidisciplinary teams, mentoring and training colleagues and students across campus, and being awarded major grants for innovative research discoveries. He plans to pursue a similar strategy at Dell Med to advance the care of brain and spine patients, partnering with clinical and research colleagues in neuroscience, cancer and other areas to leverage Austin’s technology and bioscience advances on campus and in the community. He also brings a commitment to mentoring students and faculty — for which he has won awards at Wisconsin,
Harvard and MIT. Through Dell Med’s Mulva Clinic and LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes, he looks forward to working closely with patients, families and health providers across the Austin community through outreach, talks, patient and family support groups, and events publicizing and connecting people to advances in cancer and neuroscience care that improve outcomes and quality of life. “John will be a tremendous asset for the medical school, UT Austin and the entire community,” said Dr. S. Gail Eckhardt, executive director of Dell Med’s LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes and chair of the medical school’s Department of Oncology. “We look forward to his collaboration with community providers to further develop Austin as a center of excellence in neurooncology.” For more information, contact: Steve Scheibal, Dell Medical School, 512-495-5062 (w), 512762-8808 (c)

To help make this a successful giftgiving experience, Laurie Kosarik, vice president of Merchandising at Jared the Galleria Of Jewelry, is sharing a few tips. Focus on Style It seems obvious, but one thing many shoppers forget is to focus on a recipient’s individual style and taste. If you aren’t sure, do a little research. Checking out what she may have pinned on Pinterest is often a helpful reference. Another option is to look at the latest on-trend styles as a jumping off point. “We are seeing a lot of excitement for the trends of stacking and lay-

How To Talk Money With Your College Student While college students earn their degrees, paving the way for future success in their chosen fields, they should also be paving the way for a healthy financial future. Unfortunately, money is not always discussed at an early age.
Here are a few things to consider and discuss. • Creating a budget: Break down expenses to show where money is spent and how it’s wasted.

As a result, many students start college without good money management skills. Maha Shivaratri
(Continued From Page 01)
It is observed by remembering Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, doing Yoga, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as selfrestraint, honesty, noninjury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva.
cial harmony and an all night vigil at Shiva temples. The celebration includes maintaining a “jaagaran”, an all-night
The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams. This is an ancient Hindu festival whose origin date is unknown. In Kashmir Shaivism, the festival is called Har-ratri or phonetically simpler Haerath or Herath by Shiva faithfuls of the Kashmir region. Maha Shivaratri is an annual festival dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and is particularly important in the Shaivism tradition of Hinduism. Unlike most Hindu festivals which are celebrated during the day, the Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Furthermore, unlike most Hindu festivals which include expression of cultural revelry, the Maha Shivaratri is a solemn event notable for its introspective focus, fasting, meditation on Shiva, self study, so-
vigil and prayers, because Shaiva Hindus mark this night as “overcoming darkness and ignorance” in one’s life and the world through
Shiva.
Offerings of fruits, leaves, sweets and milk to Shiva are made, some perform all-day fasting with vedic or tantric worship of Shiva, and some perform meditative Yoga. In Shiva temples, “Om Namah Shivaya”, the sacred mantra of Shiva, is chanted through the day. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated over three or ten days based on the Hindu luni-solar calendar. Every lunar month, there is a Shivaratri (12 per year). The main festival is called Maha Shivaratri, or great Shivaratri, and this is on 13th night (waning moon) and 14th day of the month Phalguna (Magha). According to the Gregorian calendar, the day falls in either February or March.
According to Jones and Ryan, the festival may have originated around the 5th century A.D.
The Maha Shivaratri is mentioned in several Puranas, particularly the Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana. These medieval era Shaiva texts present different mythologies associated with this festival, but all mention fasting and reverence for icons of Shiva such as the Lingam. Different legends describe the significance of Maha Shivaratri. According to one legend in the Shaivism tradition, this is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. The chanting of hymns, the reading of Shiva scriptures and the chorus of devotees joins this cosmic dance and remembers Shiva’s presence everywhere. According to another legend, this is the night when Shiva and Parvati got married. A different legend states that the offering to Shiva icons such as the linga is an annual occasion to get over past sins if any, to restart on a virtuous path and thereby reach Mount Kailasha and liberation. The significance of dance tradition
to this festival has historical roots. The Maha Shivaratri has served as a historic confluence of artists for annual dance festivals at major Hindu temples such as at Konark, Khajuraho, Pattadakal, Modhera and Chidambaram. This event is called Natyanjali, literally “worship through dance”, at the Chidambaram temple which is famous for its sculpture depicting all dance mudras in the ancient Hindu text of performance arts called Natya Shastra. Similarly, at Khajuraho Shiva temples, a major fair and dance festival on Maha Shivaratri, involving Shaiva pilgrims camped over miles around the temple complex, was documented by Alexander Cunningham in 1864

PADMAAVAT MOVIE
Austin South Asian | February 2018
PADMAAVAT STORY: Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) - the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), is known for her beauty and valour in 13th century India. She captures the fancy of the reigning Sultan of Delhi, the tyrant Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), who becomes obsessed with her and goes to great lengths to fulfill his greed. PADMAAVAT REVIEW: Based on a Sufi poem of the same name written in 1540 by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has added his own flair and interpretation to ‘Padmaavat’, giving it a fairytale sheen. This makes all the controversy pointless, and pale in comparison to the spectacle that unfolds. Bhansali reunites with two of his favourite leads in recent times Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, but adds Shahid Kapoor to complete this trio of commendable acting talent. Shahid is steadfast and unflappable as Maharawal Ratan Singh - the ruler of Mewar, brimming with Rajput pride. He brings a regal aura to the character that warrants him winning the confidence and loyalty of the Mewar kingdom and more importantly, Rani Padmavati’s heart. Deepika is radiant
as the Rajput Queen whose beauty, brains and valour moves the entire plot along once Alauddin Khilji becomes obsessed with her. Padmavati’s allure beyond the superficial is prominent post-interval, when her character comes to life and she gets to showcase her acting range. Ranveer as Alauddin Khilji is seen as an unhinged, barbaric Sultan,
who is consumed with a ravenous libido for power and flesh. He unleashes an animal magnetism on screen with a scarred face, kohl-lined eyes and a greased torso. The scenes between him and Shahid are some of the most engrossing, as both flex their acting muscles at opposite ends of the moral spectrum. Besides them, Aditi Rao Hydari stands her ground as the naive Mehrunissa who gets a rude awakening when she discovers her husband Alauddin’s true nature. Jim Sarbh is somewhat misplaced as the Sultan’s slave-general, unable to generate enough menace to overshadow his master’s own. Nonetheless, the ensemble moves well in tune with Bhansali’s vision of this largerthan-life retelling. The director’s expertise in heightening opulence and grandeur is well-known, further distinguishable in 3D. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee compliments him by beautifully capturing some jaw-dropping scenery. However, the effects in the action/ war scenes don’t meet the expectations raised by a film of this scale. Also, the songs don’t do much to further the narrative other than providing visual delight. Granted, it could do with a tauter screenplay and shorter run-time but ‘Padmaavat’ is an entertaining, large canvas experience, brought to life with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s stroke of visual brilliance.
