Paracetamol Trick Won’t Work With Airport Staff Anymore At the departure gate, passenger will have to undergo a thermal scan and show that the Aarogya Setu app on the passenger’s phone has the ‘You are safe’ message. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel will verify the boarding pass government identity cards through a magnified glass screen. Staff attending to passengers with special needs have been mandated to wear protective gear. While the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated one hand and one checked-in baggage, at the airline bag drop counters, a transparent partition has been installed. The passengers are being assisted by airport staff to discourage them from touching machines. While there were apprehensions about the passengers consuming paracetamol tablets to bring down the temperature of the body the sources at the officials said that earlier passengers were not caught during the thermal screening for the fear of isolation but now, all the passengers will be put under quarantine. The employees at the airport who are from Covid-19 hotspot areas are de-rostered and all the stores will be sanitised after every 30 minutes. The passengers at the airport are encouraged to use digital payment. The terminal sitting will carry the signage that allows the passenger to occupy alternate seats.

What Those Living With Asthma Can Do to Manage Their Condition

Asthma is a lung disease that makes breathing difficult for over 24 million Americans. While there is no cure, proper management can help those that live with asthma lead a normal, healthy life.

better enjoy life. Here are seven major steps to asthma self-management:

Education plays a key role in making this happen. Here are four important questions and answers about asthma self-management education from the American Lung Association: 1. What is asthma self-management?

• Making changes in your life to prevent asthma problems. • Knowing your asthma symptoms and keeping track of them. • Checking your airways with a peak flow meter. • Knowing what to do when your asthma is out of control.

The best medicines and best healthcare providers in the world can only do so much to help you manage your asthma if you are not also doing your part. For this reason, self-management is essential. “Self-management” refers to the things you can do for yourself to keep your asthma in control, have fewer asthma symptoms and

• Understanding asthma and breathing. • Talking with your healthcare providers. • Learning about and how to use your asthma medicines.

2. What are the benefits of participating in an asthma self-management program? Completing an asthma self-management education program can improve your knowledge about your specific type of asthma.

What To Expect When Your Dentist’s Office Reopens The COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot of aspects of daily life, including regular visits to the dentist. Now that some states are reopening, many dental practices are beginning to see patients for non-emergency appointments. To help protect patients and staff alike, the American Dental Association (ADA) has developed science-based guidance for dentists on extra steps they can take, in addition to the infection control procedures they’ve always followed. With this guidance in mind, here’s what you can expect at your next appointment.

reduce the number of people in the office and reduce the amount of time you’re close to others. When you enter the office, you may have your temperature taken.

Before Your Appointment To help make sure that patients arriving for their appointments are healthy, your dental office may call you before your appointment and ask you some questions about your current health. They may also repeat these questions when you arrive to make sure nothing has changed. Your dentist’s office staff may also ask that you limit the number of people you bring to the appointment. That could mean leaving your children at home or allowing older children to go into the office alone while parents wait outside during their appointment. At Your Appointment If your state or city is requiring people to wear masks in public, be sure to wear one to your appointment. When you arrive at the dental office, you may be asked to wait outside until they’re ready for you. This is to

Inside the office, you may notice that items people often touch in the waiting room -- like toys or magazines -- have been removed. The office may have hand sanitizer available for you to use and staff may wipe down items you touch, such as pens, clipboards or furniture. When you’re in the dental chair, you may notice some things look different from the last time you were there. The dentist may have covered the computer keyboard with a disposable cover so it can be easily cleaned between patients, for example. Your dentist may also be using different protective equipment than used at previous appointments. This could include different masks, face shields, gowns and goggles. These addition-

al precautions help protect both you and the dentist. After Your Appointment

It can also help you feel more confident in monitoring your symptoms, working with your healthcare providers, and in using your asthma medicines correctly. These programs can also improve your ability to avoid or reduce exposure to your asthma triggers. All this can potentially result in fewer symptoms, asthma flare-ups, missed work or school days and emergency department or urgent care visits, for an overall improved quality of life. 3. What skills will I learn? Asthma self-management education programs cover the basics about asthma and how it affects the body, as well as give participants the ability to use tools to monitor symptoms and take medicines properly. Participants also develop problem-solving skills for when asthma symptoms worsen and learn how to make lifestyle changes to avoid asthma triggers, including stress management, staying active with exercise and avoiding tobacco smoke. Through these programs, participants develop self-advocacy and communication skills for working with healthcare providers.

After your appointment, the staff will prepare for the next patient by thoroughly cleaning the areas where you’ve been with disinfectants effective against the virus that causes COVID-19. This helps reduce the risk of illness being passed to others.

4. Where can I turn for asthma self-management education?

If you start feeling ill with the symptoms of COVID-19 within 14 days of your appointment, call the dental office. You may have already been carrying the virus at the time of your appointment, so anyone who came into contact with you could be at risk for getting sick too.

These programs are designed to help millions of Americans with asthma learn the skills to make lifestyle changes that will improve symptoms and quality of life.

Visit mouthhealthy.org for up-to-date information around dental visits and COVID-19. Remember, regular dental visits are an essential part of your oral hygiene routine and are important for your overall heath. Be sure to reschedule your dental checkups once your local authorities allow dental practices to reopen. Your ADA dentist will make sure your visit is as safe as possible for everyone involved. (StatePoint)

The Lung Association offers asthma programs to help you learn asthma self-management skills, including the adult-focused asthma self-management program, Breathe Well, Live Well, and two pediatric programs, Open Airways For Schools and Kickin’ Asthma.

Additionally, the Lung Association offers a self-paced online program called Asthma Basics, which is a first step to learning more about the disease. Asthma Basics is ideal for people with asthma, or anyone caring for someone with asthma and is available at Lung.org/asthma-basics. To access these resources and learn more about lung health, visit Lung.org. Asthma, if uncontrolled, can have serious consequences. However, knowledge can empower those living with asthma to take more control of the condition and improve their quality of life. (StatePoint)

Heading To The Hospital? Get Better. Don’t Get A Blood Clot.

Spending time in the hospital can be a challenge, and the last thing you need is another setback on your road to recovery.

Follow these steps to help prevent blood clots: • Before entering the hospital, dis-

your doctor, including your personal and family history of blood clots.

This is why it is so important to know that being in the hospital -particularly if you are dealing with surgery, a physical trauma, or a serious illness like cancer -- places you at increased risk for the development of a deadly blood clot.

• Pain or tenderness • Skin that may be warm to the touch, red, or discolored Blood clots in your legs or arms can travel to your lungs, which can be deadly. Symptoms of blood clots in your lungs include: • Difficulty breathing • Chest pain that worsens with a deep breath

Each year, blood clots affect about 900,000 people in the U.S., and about half of all blood clots occur during a hospital stay or within three months of a hospital stay or surgery.

Get up and move around as often as possible. If confined to bed or unable to move, ask a family member or friend to help you move. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms. For more information, visit www. stoptheclot.org/spreadtheword/ hospitalization.

• Faster than normal or irregular heartbeat

After a hospital stay, protect yourself. Understand your risk for blood clots and pay attention to signs and symptoms.

Many blood clots occurring during or after hospitalization can be prevented, but fewer than half of hospital patients receive proper prevention measures.

When released from the hospital

This is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Blood Clot Alliance advise that you have a blood clot prevention plan when headed to and home from the hospital.

Many products designed to last a long time don’t contain the vital nutrients your body needs, and instead, contain artificial ingredients that lead to quick energy and crash cycles. While empty calories will keep you alive, they won’t allow you to thrive, promoting fat over muscle and actually weakening your body’s ability to defend itself. 2. 4 Steps To Create A Household Budget With Staying Power These uncertain times are forcing more people to reexamine finances and rewrite their household budgets. According to the Pew Research Center in a survey conducted soon after the COVID-19 crisis began, 33% of Americans either lost their jobs or suffered a pay cut or reduction in work hours. Plus, 49% said the outbreak is a major threat to their personal finances. Regardless of your situation, examining your budget and making some changes can save money and make your financial future more secure. Here are four ways to budget wisely. 1. Calculate the bottom line: Figure out your baseline income. Then, categorize expenses by what you need to maintain your standard of living, such as a mortgage, utilities, groceries and insurance. Another category should include non-essential expenses. Determine if you also want to set aside money

for savings, retirement plans or college tuition. And, experts advise setting aside at least three to six months of expenses for emergencies. Once you have these numbers, you can calculate what you’ll need on a monthly basis.

3. Find ways to save on the musthaves:

4. Consider at-home side gigs:

2. Eliminate or reduce nice-tohaves: If your expenses are still too high, or you want to save more, take another look at discretionary spending and find ways to cut. One easy way to save is to cancel premium TV channels, switch to a basic package or even sign up for a streaming service instead (Sling, Hulu, etc.). You can also drop your DVR option to save on the monthly bill. Digitally streaming or downloading content from your local library is another entertainment option too – everything from movies, music and magazines is available at no charge.

Many are supplementing their income without leaving the safety of their living room. In fact, nearly half of working Americans have a gig outside their primary job, according to Bankrate. But before applying for a remote job, always check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company is legit. Depending on your skills, there are a variety of online jobs you could do, such as customer service, copywriting or online tutoring. By tracking and cutting expenses, taking advantage of discounts and special savings programs, and perhaps even earning extra money on the side, you’ll be on your way to having a household budget with staying power. Can You Save Money Driving An Electric Vehicle?

While many motorists are aware of the environmental benefits of going electric, they may not know just how much they stand to save by making the switch. Here are some fast facts about the economics of driving an electric vehicle (EV): • Tax Incentives: Depending on your eligibility and the ca-

pacity of the battery used to power the vehicle, buying an EV can come with up to $7,500 in Federal Tax Incentives, helping you lower the upfront costs of your purchase. Talk to a tax professional to see where you stand. State and local incentives may also apply for an additional savings, so visit afdc.energy.gov to search for state and local laws and incentives. • Fuel Economy:

on your local gasoline prices, amount of mileage you average annually and other factors, visit ChooseEV.com/Savings-Calculator. • Time Savings: Time is money for busy people. The latest EV models are quick to charge compared to their predecessors. With 19,000 public charging stations nationwide and the majority of EV drivers charging their vehicles at home, being road-

ready is a fairly convenient prospect these days. In the case of the MINI Cooper SE battery electric vehicle, for example, you can quick-charge to 80 percent in 36 minutes, and the vehicle offers a 110-mile EPA-rated driving range at full charge. This model is particularly convenient, as regenerative brakes allow you to send energy back into your battery during the drive. To learn more about its features, visit, miniusa.com.

The average U.S. resident drives 13,476 miles per year and spends about $1,262 on gasoline.

“If you’re in the market for a new car, being informed about the many benefits of electric mobility is essential,” says Andrew Cutler, head of corporate communications, MINI USA.

Over the six-year average length of car ownership, that represents about $4,446 in gasoline savings.

“Going electric is not just stylish and good for the planet, for many folks, it can be a practical financial decision.”

Discovering New Hobbies: Life As A First Time Chef (Continued From Page 01) So here’s a quick primer to help with some common kitchen terminology. • Muffin vs Cupcake: Both are made of the same ingredients (flour, sugar, a binding agent, a leveling agent), so one would think the difference between a muffin and a cupcake is a moot point. But, that’s actually not the case. Muffins are heavier, with a coarser crumb structure. They have a mushroom shape that is supposed to crust on top. As a result, they are typically cooked at a higher heat compared to cupcakes. The batter is thick and clumpy, with a 2:1:1 ratio of flour, sugar and fat. Cupcakes, on the other hand, have a finer crumb structure with a thin and smooth batter. They have a 1:1:1 ratio of flour, sugar and fat, and are cooked at

lower steady temperature (hence no crusting). Often topped with icing, cupcakes are typically considered a desert while muffins are considered a breakfast item. • Achar vs. Chutney: There is less

or a salt solution (brine). Chutneys can also be preserves (even pickled preserves), though more often they are made of fresh ingredients. Nonetheless, some people use achar and chutney interchangeably. The main difference comes

Austin Public Health (APH) has published a color-coded chart to help residents of Austin-Travis County understand the stages of risk and provide recommendations on what people should do to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stage 2: Includes the recommendations for Stage 1 and adds: Maintain social distancing and wear fabric face coverings in public. Individuals are urged to avoid dining and shopping except with precautions, and to avoid gathering in groups of more than 25 people. They are advised they are safe to return to work at essential and reopened businesses.

For lower-risk individuals, defined as those with no substantial underlying health conditions who have a lower risk of complication and death from COVID-19, the recommendations are as follows: Stage 1: Practice good hygiene, stay home if sick, and avoid other people who are sick. APH is working on recommendations for maximum sizes of gatherings. Individuals are advised they are safe

Stage 3: Includes the recommendations for Stage 2 and also urges individuals to avoid non-essential travel, all social gatherings, and any gatherings of more than 10 people. Stage 4: Includes the recommendations for Stage 3 and advises individuals they are safe to return to work, and dine and shop, only at “expanded essential businesses”. This category will be defined shortly. Stage 5: Includes the recommendations for Stage 4 and urges individ-

Additional protective measures are recommended for people at higher risk, namely those aged over 65 or people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, obesity, or those who are otherwise immunocompromised. For example, higher-risk individuals are urged to avoid dining and shopping except with precautions, and avoid gatherings of more than 25 people, even at the lowest level, Stage 1. As the stages progress from 1 through 4, higher-risk individuals are advised to limit the size of their gatherings, and their dining and shopping, to a greater extent than lower-risk individuals. • Baking Soda vs. Baking Powder: Turns out the two leavening agents are not always interchangeable. Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) is naturally alkaline, so it needs an acidic ingredient and a liquid to become activated. Upon activation, carbon dioxide is produced, causing baked goods to rise. This is why recipes using baking soda will include an acidic ingredient like lemon juice. It’s needed for the reaction to occur. Baking powder, on the other hand, is a complete leveling agent, containing both an acid and a base. It usually includes a bit of cornstarch to prevent the acid from activating during storage. Technically, there are both single and double acting baking powders. Single acting ones react when combined with a liquid at room temperature and double acting ones react a second time when the mixture is heated. Bases on their own have a bitter taste, which is why using baking soda instead of baking powder in cake (without adding an acidic ingredient to neutralize the flavor) results in bitter food, and using baking powder instead of baking soda in Kashmiri tea leads to a tasteless beverage. (There isn’t enough base to react with the acidic discharge from the brewed green tea leaves, altering the taste.)

• Orange Pekoe vs. British Blend Tea: Contrary to what the packaging of many brands of tea may lead you to believe (Lipton, Red Label, Tetley), the term Orange Pekoe is not a flavor. Rather, it refers to tea leaf size used in determining tea grade when discussing teas from India or Sri Lanka. (Black tea is graded according to the size of the leaf, which can affect its brewing rate and how nuanced the flavor is.) Tea grades can get very specific within each of the major categories — OP (Orange Pekoe; whole leaves), FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe; extra-large whole leaves), and BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe; broken leaves). Pekoe is actually pronounced ‘pekho’ and is derived from a word for a special kind of Chinese tea, meaning white downy hair referring to the down-like hairs on the tea leaves that are the youngest and smallest on the plant. The orange part most likely comes from the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch royal family was the House of Orange. In the 1600s the Dutch East India Company brought its teas to Europe and the best of its black teas were reserved for the royal family. When that tea was introduced to the public, it became known as the ‘Orange’ Pekoe, to associate it with royalty (the House of Orange). Calling a tea British blend — or English breakfast — on the other hand, has more to do with taste. English breakfast is typically a blend of black, Ceylon tea, which has a bright taste, as opposed to Assam tea, which is found in most afternoon tea blends and has a more robust, malty flavor. As you acquaint yourself with these terms, try your hand at some new recipes. It’s not as daunting as it seems, and in the process, you might just fall in love with your kitchen. I certainly did as a first time chef.

On Saturday May 9 also 16th Ramadan, at 6:30 p.m., Emgage Texas, a national Muslim advocacy organization, hosted the 5th Annual Citywide Iftar in Austin with guest speakers Mayor Steve Adler, of Austin, Mayor Sadaf Jaffer, Mayor of Montgomery Township, Somerset County, New Jersey and Texas House Member John Bucy III, of Williamson County.

Adler talked about mail in ballots for everyone to save themselves from the risk of infection.

Demand that we take federal money available to us and fill out the census,” said Bucy. He reminded people to complete Census 2020.

As of now, the definition of disability includes spread of pandemic through Covid19 as ruled by District Judge Tim Sulak, in a ruling filed Friday, April 17 in Travis county. According to this tempo-

They also talked about issues that are on their table right now. This was followed by q/a with each guest. 52nd Mayor of Austin, Mayor Adler has been a great friend of Muslims in Austin. He has attended in person all Citywide Iftars so far. “Salam Alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak,” said Adler.

Adler also mentioned Shaikh Umer, a Muslim leader and scholar in Austin community who passed away last year as a friend who he misses. Rep. John Bucy III, represents District 136 (Williamson County, Cedar Park and Leander area) in the Texas House of Representatives.

“This is an important month to reflect on others and not ourselves,” said Adler especially now that we are going through the pandemic.

Rep Bucy is also the leading the Texas Democratic Party’s Platform Advisory Committee that is developing the 2020 Platform that Texas Democrats shall utilize as its manifesto for the Nov 2020 General Elections.

Adler highlighted the importance of social distancing and mail in ballots.

“We must find a path forward for election and civic engagement,” said Bucy.

“I am concerned that Governor [Greg Abbot] has opened things as quickly as he has before more testing is in place,” said Adler.

He urged people to act proactively and not be “another Wisconsin where voters stood outside for hours during the pandemic,” said Bucy.

To make the Governor’s plan of reopening businesses and essentials successful, Adler is pushing for face cover citing that “the penalty

What is an annual gathering in person to celebrate the spirit and values of the month of Ramadan and to promote civic engagement in Austin, TX, was this year a virtual meeting from the homes of the guest speakers, conducted by Emgage National Board Member Imad Ahmed and viewed by Muslims of Greater Austin and beyond. He sees a Texas where immigrants are welcome, and a government which works for all of us where we embrace those who don’t agree with us. As a viewer, I was most interested in Mayor Saddaf Jaffer of Montgomery County, NJ. “My election represents hope opportunity in political system,” said Mayor Sadaf Jaffer, who smiled through the whole iftar meeting. Jaffer was elected to be Mayor of Montgomery County NJ in 2019. “I was so focused in local that I did not realize the impact globally. I am delighted with the impact and happy to help anyone who wants to talk to me,” she said. “Immigrant communities bring a value to the table,” said Jaffer who is originally from Pakistan and Yemen.

“Keep in mind that women win elections same rate has men; it’s just that they don’t run as often,” said Jaffer when talking about Muslim women interested in a political career. Mayor Jaffer acknowledged that “a lot of Muslims were attached to Bernie Sanders as he acknowledged the Muslims like no other… He came to ISNA. I feel the pain [that Bernie did not get the Democratic nomination],” but she encouraged Muslims to get more involved, run for office, try to become a delegate, run for school board, start volunteering in local boards and commissions… So may diff ways to serve, but don’t be disillusioned. She wanted Muslims to register to vote and reach out to formal training and mentorship programs. “Your voice is needed,” she said. National Board Member of Emgage, Imad Ahmed, emphasized that s that political engagement is

key for all Texas Muslims. He said, “We live in a state that has led the country in Islamophobic legislation introduced, but thankfully, we do also have many leaders like Rep John Bucy and Mayer Adler who are supportive of our community.” He highlighted the work of Mayor Sadaf Jaffer whose story, he said, “should serve as an example to all the youth in our community. Each one of us can make an impact in politics with enough hard work and determination.” Ahmed has been in Austin the last twenty years and is politically engaged through the framework provided by Emgage. Primary theme of citywide iftar has been civic engagement something the Citywide Iftaar has always done. Texas chapter of Emgage has been around for ten years with a presence in Houston, Dallas and Austin. Austin team was the first organization to actively lobby at TX capital to actively lobby exclusively on behalf of Texas Muslims. HR41 and HR1564 resolutions were passed with efforts of Emgage on behalf of Texan Muslims. Emgage is a 501c(3) that implements an ecosystem of programs to develop the capacity of the Muslim voter to ensure that our narrative is part of the American fabric. Their programs include civic educational events such as issue forums and town halls, and voter initiatives. Make A Difference Covid-19 – Lessons We Learn By Vidya Kumar By the time you are reading this article most of the states would have eased their restrictions on shelter in place or stay at home orders. Maybe your company if you are still holding on to a job may still ask you to work from home or stagger the working hours at the office. So all the time that you were at home should have given you some time for introspection and should have made life time changes to your daily routine or at least should have given some thought about how to be more mindful about the environment.

My wonderful husband reads a lot and has very good understanding about the environmental issues and how human activity has harmful effects on our earth. He is also knowledgeable about the carbon foot- print that each person leaves yet he buys water bottles in bulk whenever we visit HEB or Costco or Walmart and uses it when he goes on weekend to play with his friends. Umpteen times I have told him to use refillable water bottle as plastic is not good for environment. He himself tells me that when the temperature is high, water in plastic bottles may become toxic nonetheless he continued to use right up to Covid-19. I am happy to state that he made the change during this time to use refillable water bottle after so many years of getting used to the ease of just picking up the plastic bottle and taking with him. I am sure that each one of us can make at least one change in our lifestyle even if it is the tiniest one that will help in reducing carbon emissions. I for one am determined to reduce the use of paper towels in the kitchen and use more of kitchen napkins for all my needs.

It will also estimate an individual’s eligibility for Medicaid. • Medicaid: While each state’s program has unique attributes for coverage, Medicaid can offer no- or low-cost coverage for those with the lowest incomes with limited cost-sharing requirements. Unlike the ACA marketplaces, there is no defined open enrollment period for Medicaid, and eligible people can sign up at any time. State eligibility requirements and income qualifications vary by state.

However, unemployed individuals have more options for affordable health insurance than they did during past economic recessions thanks to provisions in the Affordable Care Act, along with actions recently taken by Congress and some states,” says American Medical Association (AMA) president, Patrice A. 5 Not-So-Obvious Household Essentials For Your Time At Home

Extended time at home is making many families more aware of what products they simply can’t do without. While you may have predicted what some of these essentials would be -- ahem, toilet paper -- other, not-so-obvious items are helping to make quarantines more comfortable nationwide. To get a handle on what has come in most handy during this stay-athome period, Zevo recently conducted a national survey, and here are some of the items topping people’s lists: • Home Exercise Equipment. Those with gym memberships or a love of the outdoors may never have assumed there would come a day when they would need a home stationary bike or treadmill. But such equipment is for many people the best way to work out

these days, and those who lack the space for a piece of heavy machinery are turning to resistance bands, yoga mats and other smaller items

that can be tucked away between uses. • Bug Killer Spray: The last thing people want during quarantine is to share their home with pests. Unfortunately, due to a warm winter and wet spring, the forecast for ants, roaches, mosquitoes and more predicts a very buggy 2020. With so much additional time spent around the house, selecting products without harsh chemicals and odors makes a lot of sense. Zevo Instant Action Sprays with BioSelective Technology use essential oils to attack nervous system receptors vital to insects -not people or pets. With

a light scent of lemongrass and no harsh chemical odors, it’s a powerful bug solution you can feel good about using around the home. • Multipurpose Tools:

ever on video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu to keep them entertained night after night. • Fun and Games:

Many people are finding that certain basics can be used in more than one way, making them ideal to have around the house.

Screen time may be on the rise, but as it turns out, so is good-oldfashioned family fun, with many households naming puzzles and games as must-have items.

Baking soda for example, has many potential uses, including kitchen cleaner, odor eliminator, itch remedy, vegetable wash, and even as an ingredient for homemade dog toothpaste, to name a few.

Whether it’s solving a complicated 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle or organizing a family checkers tournament, having a well-stocked game room or den is a great idea right now.

Likewise, you might find that pair of scissors a go-to household item right about now, whether you are home-schooling, crafting or giving yourself a haircut.

While everyone’s situation looks a bit different and every household operates in its own unique way, there are certain items with widespread potential to create happier, healthier, more comfortable spaces.

• Streaming Video: At a time when people must remain at home, they are relying more than

Covid-19: How To Maintain Your Mental Health While Working Remotely (Continued From Page 01) However, this combination of working remotely for the first time and the unsettling news surrounding the pandemic is sure to take a toll on the mental health of many who start to work from home.

as normal, the more things will keep feeling normal.

every day. Maybe, even in between work hours.

A lot of us are struggling to pull away from coronavirus news on social media or stay social while working from home during a company-wide remote work test. At times, you just want to curl into a ball and completely forget about work. But work goes on… Thankfully, a lot of companies are practising virtual coffees and lunches, video conferencing, and consistent messaging. But there are also businesses that are new to this concept of remote work and aren’t as well-prepared as remote-first companies. Keeping your mental health a priority at work and minimizing isolation is now more important than ever before. Here are some ways you—or your business—can help. Be social The first stage is to keeping your cool when you feel anxious or lonely. Remember: if your entire company is working remotely, they’re likely experiencing the same kind of stress. It’s important to know you’re not alone. And the best way to do that is to connect with each other more often than ever. But that also does not mean that you’re constantly on phone or messaging platforms, because that may hamper work. Being social can also help you stay productive. Plan regular 1:1s to check in on your teammates emotionally as well as professionally. Use instant messaging and tools like Asana to keep your team on track. The more you move forward

Take that lunch break and nourish yourself away from your workspace as you would do at your office. And at the end of the day, log off from work completely. Find your calm

you and make you happy. Focusing on a hobby, watching a film or reading a book, making a phone call to a friend or a family member, taking a nap, or cooking your favourite meal.

Managing your mental wellness is just as important after work as it is during working hours.

You’ve put in a hard day in the middle of a hard time—you deserve to be well.

So once you log off, put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ and seek comfort in the things that matter to

24*7 social media is a big NO It’s okay to log off. In fact, it’s okay to completely unplug at times. Give yourself that break from both social media and work—the do not disturb function is there for a reason. Your work will still be there after you finish your meal. Use tools like Screen Time to manage your social media usage and be cautious about fake news. Take the time to seek out accounts that help your mental well-being to counteract the stress of social media. Stay active It’s easy to spend your entire remote workday on your couch or bed, in your pyjamas, staring at a screen for nine hours straight. But that’s not good for your body. The steps you take in an office, for instance walking to conference rooms for meetings, going to the bathroom or downstairs to pick up your lunch or even walking to a co-worker’s desk can be replicated at home—consider taking “desk breaks” where you move to a different workspace. And get some sunshine and fresh air outside! Download a yoga app or a fitness app, do that 30 mins of workout

Separate your workspace completely A home office setup—whether in a home office or a kitchen—is crucial to separating work from home and staying productive at the same time. Something as simple as setting up a monitor in a corner and designating it as workspace can keep you away from the drawbacks of working in bed. This also gives you the freedom to move about your house without linking the whole space with work—meaning you can log off at the end of the day and not feel obliged to work after office hours. Create and maintain a routine In a daily office setting, you may spend an hour commuting to work and 30 minutes settling into the office, take a 10 a.m. coffee break with your co-worker, and then work straight until lunch. It’s even more difficult to build your day like this when you’re working from home. So get dressed and ready for your day when you wake up, even if that means just changing from your pyjamas to another set of pyjamas. Make your favourite coffee and breakfast and take the usual breaks that you would in the office.

The autumn morning almost five years ago when I walked into Marilee’s D.C. studio, I knew I was meeting a force. This wasn’t doilies-and-kittens, old-lady art. I was trying to keep up with a centenarian using a walker who whisked me through her working studio filled with hacksaws, handsaws, hot wax knives, plaster, steel and bronze. Marilee — you get one-name status when your art’s in the Smithsonian permanent collection — turned 107 last year, and I was looking forward to going to another one of her shows in May, to see what she’s been up to since we last met.

“And she knew she was better, rejoining the family at breakfast.” This time, Marilee had been feeling poorly for weeks, Hansell said. She began feeling fatigued in March, and it worsened in April, just as the virus began tearing through the region and hitting the elderly in particular. When Marilee stopped eating, the nurse at the Chevy Chase House, her senior living community, insisted that she go to the hospital. There, doctors confirmed the dreaded news — Marilee tested positive and wasn’t doing well.

The novel coronavirus canceled that show. And then it threatened Marilee. But Marilee is a force, remember, and she’s been here before.

She never went on a ventilator, but doctors called her daughter, Joan Shapiro, to tell her she should get to the hospital. They believed she had no more than 12 hours to live.

Yes, that’s right. This incredible woman — artist, author, photographer, sculptor, therapist, mother, wife — conquered the 1918 flu pandemic, when she was 6 years old.

That’s how she does it, her family said. The art, the work, the passion, the vibrant engagement and curiosity is what’s propelling her toward 108.

Marilee remembered little about the illness beyond the moment she knew it was over, said her cousin, Linda Hansell, who helped write Marilee’s autobiography, “Dancing in the Wonder For 102 Years.”

It’s what she told me in 2015, when I met her in the studio and asked that requisite question for centenarians, “What’s your secret?” (Continued On Page 19)

4 Hot Home Renovation Trends This Summer

Whether building a home from scratch, doing a complete renovation or simply refreshing a room or two, you can take your project to the next level with some design inspiration.

As one half of HGTV’s “The Cousins” and the founder of Lilyshea Development LLC, John Colaneri is well-versed in top design trends. Having recently purchased a 1960s-era rambler with the goal of taking it down to the studs and remaking it, Colaneri is sharing insights and ideas to help you create a unique space in your own home where all the elements blend together:

“I also changed the rear windows into sliding doors, which made a huge difference by offering more outdoor access and light.”

Colaneri chose to work with Renewal by Andersen because of the quality of the products and the fact that it’s a one-stop shop, which can simplify a home renovation during these uncertain times. “This is the first time I had one company handle so many aspects of my project,” he says. “You need to have a professional team that thinks of all the small things that can go wrong and reacts

before they happen.” • Customized Tiling. Tiles are a great way to customize a space so that it’s truly yours. “Since I have three different design styles pervasive in my home -- contemporary, rustic and industrial, I wanted the tiles to reflect this,” says Colaneri, who chose different effects for his daughter’s bathroom, the master bathroom and his home’s entryway, where he used a hexagon marble tile that blends into the wood floor. To learn more about Colaneri’s project and read about more ways to freshen up your space, visit getinspiredwithjohn.com. When it comes to a renovation, it’s all about potential. worried a little about the way I wrote that. Because “selfish” isn’t really what we call it when men do it, right? I’m sure Marilee may have heard that word often — “selfish” — and probably battled it for many years, as she continued to produce and create. She had her first show in Chicago in 1938, and her work was sold in Washington galleries for decades. She was on staff at American University and spent years as an art therapist at the National Institute of Mental Health.

The coronavirus, which hits the elderly particularly hard, threatens to flatten that particular curve. Marilee isn’t having it. She never has, even before she was born. But it wasn’t “selfish,” what she did. She shared her talent and skill with many throughout her life. She simply never let her artistic self be stifled by all the other selves expected of women. And her ability to pivot, adapt and evolve has something to do with her vibrant longevity. In her late 80s, when it

became challenging to work with large, heavy bronze sculptures, Marilee didn’t retire. She found a new, more nimble medium: digital. She enrolled in a Corcoran School of the Arts and Design class on digital photography at 88, in a classroom full of students seven decades younger. Her prints were everywhere when I visited her studio. She was on a photography binge, experimenting with color. “I’ve always been afraid of color,” she said. “So I’m working on that right now.” Five years later, her digital prints — photographs and drawings manipulated and enhanced on her computer — are vibrant and brilliant, colorful and gorgeous. Marilee is a force, always growing, always moving forward. I can’t wait to see what else she plans to share with the world.

Coronavirus: Will There Be A Second Wave, And What Does That Mean?

experts. The threat of resurgence

“There’s a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through,” Redfield told The Washington Post on Tuesday. “We’re going to have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time.”

Professor James Naismith, from the University of Oxford in the UK, has said it is highly likely that the world will face further waves of the virus until a vaccine is in use. “I think everyone now realizes just how fast this pandemic can move and what the stakes are,” he warned. How does a second wave happen? If the first wave of an outbreak is large enough, the majority An effective vaccine is still months away, by the best estimates, and the global population will still be susceptible to a second wave of infection when lockdowns are lifted. Resurging countries China locked down Harbin, a city of 10 million people on Monday over fears of a second wave of coronavirus cases. Seventy people have tested positive in Harbin where more than 4,000 have been tested. The new cases link to a student returning from New York. of a population can become immune to the disease. But this type of herd immunity can only be achieved by letting the virus pass through the entire population, which means more lives lost, or through vaccination that mimics

Will there be a second wave? Researchers have compared the coronavirus crisis to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, which is estimated to have claimed 50 million lives. The Spanish flu swept the world in three waves over one year – and it was the second wave that proved far more deadly than the first.

ease. Without a vaccine, and with no widespread immunity to the new disease, Singapore is another country which has seen a sudden second wave.

only declines when susceptibility of the population to the disease falls below a certain threshold or when widespread vaccination becomes available.

Although Singapore was initially praised for containing COVID-19 among its general population, the disease reemerged in cramped a dormitory where thousands of foreign workers without inadequate hygiene facilities live.

In general terms, the ratio of susceptible and immune individuals in a population at the end of one wave determines the potential magnitude of a subsequent wave. Preliminary studies out of Canada and Holland indicate that as few as 3 percent of people have antibodies that can defend against the virus.

With 1,426 new cases reported on Monday, Singapore’s experience has demonstrated the ability of the disease to come back strongly in places where people are in close proximity. Fears for a second wave were also heightened in South Korea as officials said at least 179 recovered coronavirus patients have tested positive for a second time. Patients in their 20s accounted for the highest portion of patients to retest positive for coronavirus, South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Sunday. Is a second wave inevitable? While globally-enforced lockdowns are effectively tempering the spread of COVID-19, the same restrictions are also devastating economies and societies. But how can governments ease restrictions without prompting a second wave? This is the question that is currently vexing global leaders and health

In certain parts of Germany and France, however, this number seems to be around 14 percent. The worry is that with a vaccine still months away, populations worldwide remain highly vulnerable to both resurgence and subsequent waves. “Epidemics are like fires. When fuel is plentiful, they rage uncontrollably, and when it is scarce, they smolder slowly,” Justin Lessler, an associate professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, wrote in the Washington Post in March. “Epidemiologists call this intensity the ‘force of infection,’ and the fuel that drives it is the population’s susceptibility to the pathogen. A s repeated waves of the epidemic reduce susceptibility (whether through complete or partial immunity), they also reduce the force of infection, lowering the risk of illness even among those with no immunity,” Lessler wrote.

A few wardrobe considerations go a long way. Opt for long, lightweight clothing in light colors, which can protect your skin from sun exposure while keeping you cool. Sun-

glasses and a wide-brimmed hat can provide further coverage. If possible, arrange to spend the bulk of your time outdoors either before 10 in the morning or after 4 in the afternoon to avoid exposure while the sun’s rays are at their strongest. • Don’t forget the SPF. Apply sunscreen and a lip balm containing SPF before heading outdoors. Reference the bottle’s instructions to ensure you are reapplying as-needed. Dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30 or higher for extended outdoor activity. For lawn care and gardening, you should also be on the lookout for a product that’s resistant to sweat. • Promote resilience: There are many outdoor elements that produce free radicals, such as sun exposure and pollution, and exposure to these free radicals can have harsh effects on the body.

To help protect and maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin, consider incorporating Heliocare Daily Use Antioxidant Formula into your morning routine. In a survey conducted by Ferndale Healthcare Inc. between Nov 2019 and Feb 2020, of 923 U.S. dermatologists, more than half personally use Heliocare, and 87 percent of these experts recommend it to their patients. “I tell all my patients who ask me how to maintain their skin’s youthful appearance to consider taking Heliocare, particularly if

they spend a lot of time outdoors,” says New York City dermatologist, Dr. Rachel Nazarian. The antioxidant-rich proprietary extract in Heliocare, Fernblock PLE Technology, has been studied for over 25 years by leading dermatologists. To learn more and to access additional skin care information, visit heliocare.com. • Adopt healthy habits: Drinking plenty of water and ensuring you are getting electrolytes can help regulate the balance of fluid in the body for healthy-looking skin. Also, be sure to get a great night’s sleep. Not only do you deserve it after a hard day of work, but sufficient sleep is beneficial to skin health. This summer, treat your skin right while working in the yard. Take steps to protect it from the inside out. (StatePoint)

Common Moving Myths - Busted! You’ve finally found the perfect home. Now comes the hard part: moving. But don’t let misconceptions complicate the process. To keep frustrations to a minimum and make your move more manageable, here are five common moving myths, debunked.

Myth 1: All moves are disorganized. Truth: Contrary to popular opinion, relocating can be structured. Begin purging items that aren’t moving with you several weeks before you start packing. Once you’re ready to box up your belongings, pack by room and label, label, label. Numbering containers, color-coding boxes with masking tape and listing contents will help you keep track of your possessions. If you’re unsure of what supplies you’ll need, check out the moving calculator at DuckBrand.com. Simply enter the number of bedrooms and baths into the calculator for an instant shopping list based on your needs. Myth 2: You have to move everything at once. Truth: Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have a single day to move. While for some this is unavoidable, if possible, taking a few days to relocate can greatly reduce stress. Identify essentials you’ll need immediately, like bedding and kitchen tools, and ensure these necessities are “last on, first off” the moving truck. Plan to transition items such as décor and out-of-season clothing later. You may also consider transporting important documents and jewelry separately from the truck to ensure safe passage. For an easy first night’s stay, pack a duffle bag with everything you need for the next 24 hours, including toiletries, a change of clothing and musthaves for kids, like diapers.

Myth 3: Items will break. Truth: Absolutely not! While it can be stressful to transport irreplaceable items, it’s easy to keep them safe with solutions like Bubble Wrap brand cushioning. This protective padding from Duck brand easily conforms to valuables for a cushiony defense, and fills empty space to keep things from shifting. To ensure a safe arrival, wrap items with the bubbles facing inward, smooth side out. Then, seal boxes with durable packing tape to ensure a safe arrival. Myth 4: Duct or masking tape work just as well as packing tape. Truth: Although it’s easier to reach for the duct tape in your junk drawer, not every tape will secure your valuables. These adhesives aren’t intended for the cardboard surfaces of moving boxes and can peel off minutes after application. The wrong tape can cause frustration, expensive breakage, compromised storage and even physical harm should a box suddenly break open at the wrong moment. To avoid this, seal boxes with strong packaging tape, like EZ Start packing tape from Duck brand. This frustrationfree tape unrolls smoothly, easily and quietly -- and you never lose the tape end. Myth 5: Friday is the best day to move. Truth: Fridays are thought to be the best moving day because it gives you the whole weekend to unpack. However, everyone else thinks that too, which means you pay a premium. The most expensive times to move are weekends and at the beginning or end of the month. If your schedule allows, select an off-peak time, such as a weekday morning or afternoon. Regardless of when you relocate, book movers several weeks in advance to lock in the day and time you want. For more information on how Duck brand can help you throughout your moving process, visit www.duckbrand.com. Moving is a big deal but by sorting fact from fiction, you can keep frustrations to a minimum. (StatePoint)

Pakistan Plane Crash Survivor: ‘All I Could See Was Fire’ One of the survivors of Friday’s plane crash in the Pakistani city of Karachi has described his ordeal, saying all he could see “was fire”.

It came days after Pakistan allowed commercial flights to resume after the country’s coronavirus lockdown was eased.

Passenger Muhammad Zubair was one of at least two passengers who survived after the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Airbus A320 came down in a residential area.

How did Muhammad Zubair escape? Flight PK8303, an Airbus A320 carrying 91 passengers and eight crew - including many families travelling ahead of Sunday’s Eid holiday - had travelled from Lahore.

Health authorities in Sindh province said 97 deaths had been confirmed. The cause of the crash is not yet known. The pilot had reported a technical fault after one failed landing attempt, according to local media, then issued a mayday call as the plane came down.

Father’s Day Father’s Day falls on Sunday 21 June this year. This means that, at the time of writ-

ing, there’s just under one month to go. The date of Father’s Day changes every year because it is always held on the third Sunday of June. Father’s Day has been celebrated

among European Catholics since the middle ages when it was originally marked on Saint Joseph’s Day (19 March) with a feast. How-

ever, the US was one of the first nations to make Father’s Day an official holiday. Richard Nixon introduced it under US law, and afterwards many other countries followed suit.

came down.

It was attempting to land at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport at about 14:30 local time (09:30 GMT) when it

Mr Zubair, who suffered only minor injuries, said the plane attempted one landing and then crashed 10-15 minutes later.

houses in the Model Colony residential area. TV footage showed rescue crews combing through debris strewn across the streets of the densely populated zone. A number of cars were set on fire. Eyewitness Mohammed Uzair Khan told the BBC he had heard a massive sound and went outside his home. “Almost four houses were completely collapsed, there was so much fire and smoke,” he said. “They are almost my neighbours, I can’t tell you what a horrible thing it was.” Purported audio of the conversation between air traffic control and a pilot was published by Pakistani media. The pilot is heard saying the plane had “lost engines”. An air traffic controller asks whether it is going to carry out a “belly landing”, to which the pilot replies “mayday, mayday, mayday”. One civil aviation official told Reuters the plane may have been unable to lower its undercarriage.

“No-one was aware that the plane was about to crash; they were flying the plane in a smooth manner,” he said.

Images posted on social media appeared to show scorch marks under both engines, with no undercarriage visible on approach.

He lost consciousness following the crash. When he came to, he said, “I could hear screams from all directions. Kids and adults. All I could see was fire. I couldn’t see any people - just hear their screams”.

Investigators will try to retrieve the so-called black box recorders to help determine the cause.

“I opened my seatbelt and saw some light - I went towards the light. I had to jump down about 10ft (3m) to get to safety,” he added. How likely are you to survive a plane crash? Why did the aircraft crash? The plane was only just short of the runway perimeter when it struck

A committee of investigation has already been set up. PIA said the plane had joined the fleet in 2014 and passed its annual airworthiness inspection last November. What do we know about the casualties? According to local authorities, 97 deaths have been confirmed, al-

though it is unclear how many of the dead were passengers and how many residents on the ground. Nineteen of the dead have been identified. Zafar Masud, president of the Bank of Punjab, was the other passenger who survived the crash, a provincial government spokesman said. Both were at the front of the plane. There are reports of other survivors but these have not been confirmed. On Saturday, funerals took place for some of the victims in Karachi. DNA tests are being conducted on the bodies of others before they can be handed over to relatives. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was “shocked and saddened” by the crash, promising an immediate investigation. But the Pakistan Airlines’ Pilots Association (Palpa) said it had no faith in the official investigation. The group called for international investigators to be involved in the inquiry. What is Pakistan’s safety record like? Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record, including a number of airliner crashes. In 2010, an aircraft operated by private airline Airblue crashed near Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board - the deadliest air disaster ever in Pakistan. In 2012, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Pakistan’s Bhoja Air crashed in bad weather on its approach to land in Rawalpindi, killing all 121 passengers and six crew. And in 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames while travelling from northern Pakistan to Islamabad, killing 47 people.

Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is a historical palace and a royal residence at Mysore in the Indian State of Karnataka. It is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. The palace is in the centre of Mysore, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward. Mysore is commonly described as the ‘City of Palaces’, and there are seven palaces including this one; however, ‘Mysore Palace’ refers specifically to this one within the Old fort.

The construction cost was placed at Rs 41,47,913 (around $30 million adjusted to inflation) and was completed in 1912. The palace was further ex-

ace is commonly described as Indo-Saracenic, with blends of the Hindu, Mughal, Rajput, and Gothic styles. It is a three-story stone structure with marble domes, and has a 145-foot five-story tower. The palace is surrounded by a large garden. The entrance gate and arch hold the emblem and coat of arms of the kingdom of Mysore,

The palace was built adjacent to the even older Parakala Mutt headquarters, whose leaders have remained the rajagurus (royal teacher and guide) of Mysore kings. The kings of Mysore were devotees of Goddess Chamundi, hence the palace’s facing the Chamundi Hills. The palace houses two durbar halls (ceremonial meeting halls of the royal court) and incorporates an array of courtyards, gardens, and buildings.

The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as puragiri (literally, citadel), and is now known as the Old Fort. Yaduraya built the first palace inside the Old Fort in the 14th century, which was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current structure was constructed between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace was burnt ablaze Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors. The last palace, now known as the Old Palace or the Wooden Palace, was burnt into ashes during the 1896 Dasara festivities. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother Maharani Kempananjammanni Devi, commissioned the British architect Henry Irwin to build a new palace. Meanwhile, the royal family stayed in the close by Jaganmohan Palace. The construction was overseen by B. P. Raghavulu Naidu, an executive en-

panded in around 1930 (including the addition of the present Public Durbar Hall wing) during the reign of Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. Although the construction was completed in 1912, the fort continued to be beautified and its inhabitants were slowly moved to the newer extensions built off the palace. AKBAR AND BIRBAL STORIES The Foolish Thief

Once upon a time, a rich merchant was robbed in King Akbar’s kingdom. The grief-stricken merchant went to the court and asked for help. Akbar asked Birbal to help the merchant find the robber. The merchant told Birbal that he was suspicious of one of his servants. On getting the hint from the merchant, Birbal summoned all the servants and told them to stand in a straight line. When asked about the robbery, everyone denied doing it, as expected.

facade with several expansive arches and two smaller ones flanking the central arch, which is supported by tall pillars. Above the central arch is a sculpture of Gajalakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance with her elephants. There are three major exclusive temple buildings within the Old Fort, and about 18 inside the palace heart building.

Birbal then handed over one stick of the same length, to each one of them.

While dispersing, Birbal said, “By tomorrow, the robber’s stick will increase by two inches”.

The next day when Birbal summoned everyone and inspected their sticks, one servant’s stick was shorter by two inches. On being asked by the merchant about the mystery of finding the real thief, Birbal said, “It was simple: the thief had cut his stick by two inches, fearing that it would increase in size”. Moral Truth always prevails.
