SAIVA Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti is a national festival celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mo-
handas Karamchand Gandhi, who is unofficially called the “Father of the Nation”. It is one of the three national holidays of the country. The United Nations General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2 October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. It is celebrated every year. (Continued On Page 11)
By Megha Uppal This month, SAIVA members had the opportunity to partner with Dell Corporation in their Ma-Dada program. The Ma-Dada program is to foster and encourage intergenerational engagement between senior members and members of younger generations. The program allows community members to bond with SAIVA senior members. The programming at the event included doll and blanket making for Dell Children’s hospital. It was amazing for the activity to bring people from all
different background and generations to impact the community. The dolls are used by the hospital for patient education and comforting. With about 50 participants, the activity included stuffing, sewing, and dressing the dolls. The event would not have been possible without Dipty Desai, Sangeeta Sethi, Palak Sadarangani, and Dhanu Aunti. If you are interested in having the MaDada program in your community or company, please email us at saivacommunications@gmail.com and check out saiva.org on other ways SAIVA members are making a difference in the community.

nations where it is celebrated.
Its celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings in the communities and countries where it is observed. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika in Bikram Sambat calendar (the month of Aippasi in Tamil Calendar). In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November. Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family

Modi had tweeted: “In her prizewinning essay, Ravisha from Goa writes about what should be done for a @swachhbharat. I compliment her for her work.”

ern and Western part of India), followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wife–husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhai Dooj dedicated to sister–brother bond on the fifth day. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra.
On the same night that Hindus celebrate Diwali, Jains celebrate a festival also called Diwali to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal Empire prison, and Newar Buddhists, unlike the majority of Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi. History Diwali dates back to ancient times in India, as a festival after the summer harvest in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika. The festival is mentioned in Sanskrit texts such as the Padma Purana, the Skanda Purana both completed in second half of 1st millennium AD but believed to have been expanded from a core text from an earlier era. The diyas (lamps) are mentioned in Skanda Purana to symbolically represent parts of the sun, the cosmic giver of light and energy to all life, who seasonally transitions in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik. Hindus in some regions of India associate Diwali with the legend of Yama and Nachiketa on Kartika amavasya (Diwali night). The Nachiketa story about right versus wrong, true wealth versus transient wealth, knowledge versus ignorance is recorded in Katha Upanishad composed in 1st millennium BC. King Harsha in the 7th century Sanskrit play Nagananda mentions Deepavali as Deepapratipadutsava (Deepa = light, pratipada = first day, utsava = festival), where lamps were lit and newly engaged brides and grooms were given gifts.
Rajasekhara referred to Deepavali as Dipamalika in his 9th century Kavyamimamsa, wherein he mentions the tradition of homes being whitewashed and oil lamps decorating homes, streets and markets in the night. The Persian traveller and historian Al Biruni, in his 11th century memoir on India, wrote of Deepavali being celebrated by Hindus on New Moon day of the month of Kartika. Significance Diwali is one of the happiest holidays in India and Nepal with significant preparations. People clean their homes and decorate them for the festivities. Diwali is one of the biggest shopping seasons in India and Nepal; people buy new clothes for themselves and their families, as well as gifts, appliances, kitchen utensils, even expensive items such as cars and gold jewellery. People also buy gifts for family members and friends which typically include sweets, dry fruits, and seasonal specialties depending on regional harvest and customs. It is also the period when children hear ancient stories, legends about battles between good and evil or light and darkness from their parents and elders. Girls and women go shopping and create rangoli and other creative patterns on floors, near doors and walkways. Youth and adults alike help with lighting and preparing for patakhe (fireworks). There is significant variation in regional practices and rituals. Depending on the region, prayers are offered before one or more deities, with most common being Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity. On Diwali night, fireworks light up the neighborhood skies. Later, family members and invited friends celebrate the night over food and sweets.

Natural Ways To Support Infant Health During Pregnancy
In the last 10 years, scientists have learned that having enough beneficial gut bacteria is a critical component of overall health. Now, research shows that ensuring newborns have sufficient exposure to probiotic bacteria during infancy and early childhood can give them a head start on lifelong wellness. What makes bacteria so important? Well, with nearly 80 percent of the immune system residing in the gut, a healthy microbial makeup from birth is essential for proper immune system development and optimal digestive, metabolic, and brain function. When looking to encourage a healthy infant microbiome (AKA the array of bacteria and microorganisms in the body), science tells us that the mother’s gut health is key. Here’s how it works: during pregnancy, babies are exposed to their mother’s bacteria in the placenta, which harbors a variety of microbes. A baby’s immune system begins to develop just after birth,
during which a mother passes on her beneficial bacteria to her child (often termed “seeding the microbiome”) as he or she passes through the vaginal canal and par-
mother), helpful microorganisms selectively colonize the gut and participate in the maintenance and promotion of the child’s immune system.
In addition to directly replenishing their good bacteria, moms should do their best to stay well-rested and properly hydrated while paying close attention to their diet. Focusing on getting proper prenatal nutrition in the form of whole and plant-based foods, especially those rich in prebiotic fiber is important. It’s also helpful to be mindful of factors that deplete good bacteria, like antimicrobials, stress, environmental toxins and exposure to unnecessary antibiotics. Many doctors, midwives and other experts are touting the health benefits of one supplement for expecting and new mothers believed to increase a child’s chances for a healthy start at life: probiotics.

Not only can probiotics help with digestive discomfort during pregnancy, but an effective supplement can repopulate a mother’s system and help ensure she is passing on the best and most beneficial bacteria to her children. One might live without parents. As parents cannot be with us till we last. One might live without the spouse. Since very few live together till their last. One might live without offsprings. As they may be drifted away from us or may abandon.

From one corner of a city or county to another, life expectancy can vary by five, 10 or even 20 years, according to a report from the Center on Society and Health. “What would it take to close those gaps across our community and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible?” asks Dr. Clyde Yancy, M.D., American Heart Association past president and chief of cardiology at Northwestern University in Chicago.

To accommodate shifts in usage, library systems have been improving their physical structures.
The answer may be simpler than you think: Libraries aren’t just about books any more. Most have shifted focus from their collections to the communities they serve, and adjusted their designs to match.
Six more library upgrades are currently on the horizon in DC, including a renovation and addition to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
Library-sponsored programs, such as children’s reading hours and job-search assistance sessions, are bolstering many branches’ outreach and education efforts. “Art and poetry can be a beautifully effective outlet for dealing with tragedy or loss,” says J. • Good nutrition. If you are breastfeeding, consider keeping a food diary to note how your baby responds after you eat different foods. It’s also important to follow safety recommendations regarding alcohol consumption, prescription medications and caffeine. • Regular check-ups. Follow your pediatrician’s guidelines for scheduling checkups carefully.
These appointments are crucial to ensure your baby is growing at a healthy rate, having healthy reflexive responses and is infection-free. This is also one of your best opportunities to have all of your questions answered. Lastly, these appointments will include all the vaccinations your baby needs. • Healthy interactions. Spending time with your newborn is critical for their physical and emotional health, as well as his or her neurological development. Spend as much time as possible with your baby. If you go back to work, be sure that your baby’s caregivers spend plenty of time holding, playing and speaking to your baby. The right nutrition and habits can reduce a child’s risk for many common health conditions. Take every step you can to offer your child the healthiest future possible. (StatePoint)

Peripheral Artery Disease: Are You At Risk?
Do you blame “getting older” for your leg pain or difficulty walking? Do you just accept it and do the best you can?
You could actually be suffering from a condition called peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD now affects more than 8.5 million American adults, according to the American Heart Association, and if left untreated, can increase your risk of losing a portion of your toes, feet and legs to amputation.

“The primary goal is to restore and preserve adequate blood flow to the extremities,” said Dr. Jihad Mustapha, director of cardiovascular research at Metro Health - University of Michigan Health.
The good news is that PAD can be managed when diagnosed early. PAD is a vascular disease that mainly affects the arteries that carry blood to the legs and feet. It is primarily caused by the buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries, called atherosclerosis. This buildup reduces blood flow through the arteries and can lead to pain and lack of mobility. Those at the highest risk of PAD
While these are classic signs and symptoms, up to 40 percent of individuals with PAD have no leg pain, according to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, which is why routine check-ups with your doctor are important.

The more risk factors you have, the greater your chances are of developing PAD.
Other symptoms can include: weakness in legs, skin wounds or sores on your legs, feet, or toes that are slow to heal or foot or toe pain that often disturbs your sleep.
One of the classic symptoms of PAD is a dull, cramping pain in the

Some key questions to ask your doctor include: • Does my medical history raise my risk for PAD? • Which screening tests or exams are right for me? • What is my blood pressure? Ready for a New Phone? How to Tell if it’s Time to Switch Your Wireless Provider When you’re buying a new phone, it’s only natural to wonder if it’s time to break up with your current wireless provider and move on. Doing so might save you money and offer you more convenience and better service. But changing providers is a big decision and there are several things to consider when deciding to change your mobile network along with your phone. Know Your Priorities It’s important to make sure your mobile plan works for you. Look over your bills from the past few months and make a list of what features are important to you -calling, texting, unlimited data, international calling benefits, travel fees, etc. Right now, there is no reason to ever run out of data each month. Almost all the major wireless networks are
offering unlimited data plans and many will give a lot of free extras to get you to switch. But not all plans are created equal. Do your homework to get the best deal. For instance, some wireless providers include taxes and fees in the quoted rate, while others charge taxes and fees on top of the bill. And if you are getting more than one line, ask about family plan rates. If you are over 55, find out if there are any discounted plan rates for your age bracket and make sure the plan meets your needs. Look for Discounts and Perks Americans are now spending over half their screen time on smartphones and digital devices, versus watching traditional television. And the trend is only accelerating -- mobile viewing is expected to more than double by 2020. Seek out a wireless provider that understands how you really use
your phone. For example, T-Mobile ONE family plans now come with a standard Netflix subscription included, so customers can binge all their favorite programs on their favorite devices, without spending a penny over the cost of their mobile plans. Review Trade-in Options If staying current is important to you, check out a network’s trade-in options. These days, many providers will either pay off what you owe on your devices when you switch or give you a sweet trade-in deal. For example, T-Mobile allows customers to trade in their current iPhone for the newest iPhone after just 50 percent is paid off, and customers will have their remaining payments wiped out. Such perks can make a particular network an attractive choice. To learn more, visit t-mobile.com. (Continued On Page 21)

Swet Shop Boys, and earned critical acclaim with the hip-hop albums Microscope and Cashmere. According to New York Times article, Riz Ahmed’s Double Identity: Actor and Rapper (August 26, 2017), is less a side project than a parallel one for Mr. Ahmed, with both parts of his career serving a similar purpose in increasing representation for South Asians in culture. In both ways, Ahmed makes statements that tie with what is happening today. And he proceeds unafraid. He says in the same article, “Trump want my exit, but if he press the red button to watch Netflix, bruv, I’m on,” Mr. Ahmed raps in a thick British accent on the single “T5,” about racial profiling.
Ahmed’s Emmy win shattered a proverbial glass ceiling and made older generation actress/writer Meera Syal who tweets at @MeeraSyal say, “Lump in throat remembering being kid with big dreams, brown skin and no map. And now this. Thanks.” Her comment is on point. South Asian presence has been ignored even in historical films that depicted real events. Recent film Dunkirk, about World War 2, failed to show even a single South Asian while portraying British soldiers. It is a widely accepted fact that the soldiers were there. So this Emmy is a reality check to all those in denial that South Asians are in business to stay and be recognized.
Balance The Inside With The Outside And Liberate Yourself At Forty By Sumaiya Malik When a friend turned forty, I decided to gift her books on my reading list. I had crossed forty a few years earlier and to me, books seemed the ideal gift.
O’ I did look chic, but just enough to compliment what I had to say. I wanted conversation deeper than just a comment about how well dressed I looked.
“Words would be of value,” I thought. In the the birthday message, I wrote, “From now on it is more about balance of the inside with the outside. “
Somewhere along the way, this balance liberated my mind from the walls I had self-created around what I did. The walls fell on my birthday. I clearly remember…
I try to apply this balance in what I do and how I carry myself. This change in attitude did not happen as a sudden conscious decision, but as a gradual inclination of my mind to go deeper into thoughts that came along with the addition of different experiences over time in my life. I realized I was trying to create that balance when I looked at myself in the mirror before heading out one night for a dinner with friends. I was wearing a simple cotton blouse and black pants, with a smaller than usual set of earrings, just an eyeliner and no other makeup, cute sandals rather than gawdy be-jewelled stilettos and a subdued purse.
No longer was my conversation just about the outwardly self. If fashion happened to be discussed socially, I would go deeper and talk about the inspiration and the message behind the longer shirt length.
This was nearly a year before I turned forty. By the time I turned forty, the balance was probably a part of me. I had painted all my life and written off and on, but now I was doing in-depth self-studies and talking about it.
When I turned forty, I decided to celebrate my own birthday. I made the plan two weeks ahead of time and carefully worked out what I wanted to do. The idea of throwing a party on my birthday was not new to me and I had done it for the previous four years.
But my parties were dinners planned with friends with music and excitement and the grandest of fashion. Instructions were mailed out ahead of time and there was a buzz in the community about them. Friends were excited because they knew that they would be in on some grand entertainment. ‘Not this time,’ I said to myself as I planned the big day. This party was about what I want to do and I hoped that my friends would also enjoy what I wanted to do. Casual… jeans and a t-shirt, weekend family lunch at home, Italian spaghetti with meat sauce and a double decker cake and only my dearest friends in town. The birthday was a ton of fun. My daughter secretly took over the cake planning and conspired with dad to design such a special cake with my name printed on the side on the second layer. A sight I will never forget! More than anything that happened on my 40th birthday, I remember this calm about me. I remember the carefree attitude
which said,” I don’t care if things fall apart. I will still have fun.” And fun, we all did have because there was no fear of pleasing the guests or what ifs. It was all about what is, is. And it was about interesting in-depth conversations about what we all were into. So in honor of all those who cross 40 and break the internal walls, expose yourself to try new things. I have complied ten things that would push me outside my comfort zone and break more walls. Maybe you can try some of these and break your walls sooner than when you turn forty: 1. Attend a free talk at the Texas Book Festival on November 2nd. 2. Try listening to music at ACL. 3. Attend a talk at UT about a subject that has fascinated you. 4. Watch a movie that touches a social issue and stay for the q/a 5. Try dressing up to understate yourself and enhance what you are about.

ADVICE TO PARENTS FOR ACL – PART 2 Dear Parents, I am sending more advice to you this year regarding ACL because many of you took my advice last year and sent your kids to the music festival that is again coming up. This year those parents are gearing up for ACL again and are actually planning to enjoy the music scene themselves also (though separately from the kids). For those who have never taken the plunge, here are some reasons why you would send your kids to ACL: 1. Music relaxes the soul. Kids have stresses! 2. Group entertainment is a good way to socialize. 3. It’s cool to go to ACL! Every kid wants to feel like they are with it. 4. High school kids need to out of their comfort zone and try the festival to train them for other festivals out of the city. 5. Big confidence booster! Do your homework first. Read, read and read! Fine-tune the plan. Oneday pass might be the best way if this is your first time. Help your kids get excited by looking at the lineup. This year there is Willie Nelson, Jay-Z, Chance the Rapper, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The XX, Ice Cube and many more. Take my advice and fear not. Your kids will remember it as an adventure of fun. Akbar And Birbal Hundred Gold Coins & Birbal
The wisdom of Birbal was unparalleled during the reign of Emperor Akbar. But Akbar’s brother in law was extremely jealous of him. He
felt honored that the king had sent a special messenger with such a precious gift. He honored Birbal and gave him a large number of expensive gifts and a bag of gold coins as a return gift for the king.
According to Jean de Thévenot, a French traveller of the 17th century whose narration was complemented with the available Persian texts, the Charminar was constructed in the year 1591 CE, to commemorate the beginning of the second Islamic millennium year (1000 AH). The event was celebrated far and wide in the Islamic world, thus Qutb Shah founded the city of Hyderabad to celebrate the event and commemorate it with the construction of this building. Due to its architecture it is also called as arc de triomphe of the east. Historian Masud Hussain Khan says that the construction of Charminar was completed in the year 1592, and that it is the city of Hyderabad which was actually founded in the year 1591.

According to the book “Days of the Beloved”, Qutb shah constructed the Charminar in the year 1589, on the very spot where he first glimpsed his future queen Bhagmati, and after her conversion to Islam, Qutb Shah renamed the city as “Hyderabad”. Though the story was denied by the historians and scholars, it became popular folklore among the locals. Qutb Shah was also among the early poets of Dakhani Urdu, while laying the foundation of Charminar performed the prayers in Dakhini couplets.

asked the Emperor to dispense with Birbal’s services and appoint him in his place. He gave ample assurance that he would prove to be more efficient and capable than Birbal. Before Akbar could take a decision on this matter, this news reached Birbal. Birbal resigned and left. Akbar’s brother in law was made the minister in place of Birbal. Akbar decided to test the new minister. He gave three hundred gold coins to him and said, “Spend these gold coins such that, I get a hundred gold coins here in this life; a hundred gold coins in the other world and another hundred gold coins neither here nor there.” The minister found the entire situation to be a maze of confusion and hopelessness. He spent sleepless nights worrying how he would get himself out of this mess. Thinking in circles was making him go crazy. Eventually, on the advice of his wife, he sought Birbals help. Birbal said, “Just give me the gold coins. I shall handle the rest.” Birbal walked the streets of the city holding the bag of gold coins in his hand. He noticed a rich merchant celebrating his son’s wedding. Birbal gave a hundred gold coins to him and bowed courteously saying, “Emperor Akbar sends you his good wishes and blessings for the wedding of your son. Please accept the gift he has sent.” The merchant
Next, Birbal went to the area of the city where the poor people lived. There he bought food and clothing in exchange for a hundred gold coins and distributed them in the name of the Emperor. When he came back to town he organized a concert of music and dance. He spent a hundred gold coins on it. The next day Birbal entered Akbar’s darbar and announced that he had done all that the king had asked his brother-in-law to do. The Emperor wanted to know how he had done it. Birbal repeated the sequences of all the events and then said, “The money I gave to the merchant for the wedding of his son – you have got back while on this earth. The money I spent on buying food and clothing for the poor – you will get it in the other world. The money I spent on the musical concert – you will get neither here nor there.” Akbar’s brother in law understood his mistake and resigned. Birbal got his place back. Moral: The money you spend on friends is returned or reciprocated in some form or the other. The money spent on charity gets converted into blessings from God which will be your eternal property. The money spent on pleasures is just frittered away. So when you spend your money, think a little, if not a lot.

5 Home Maintenance Projects To Tackle This Fall
Fall is the perfect time to complete those pesky home maintenance projects left on your to do list. If you’ve been putting off these chores, you’re not alone, but it could cost you. In fact, a national
survey from Erie Insurance shows many Americans are putting themselves and their homes at financial risk by delaying important home maintenance tasks. Make sure you’re protected by fo-
cusing on these five areas: • The Roof. Twenty-three percent of homeowners admit they never inspect their roof or have it inspected unless there is a problem,
according to the Erie Insurance survey. Unfortunately, replacing a roof is also one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have if not maintained properly. Nationally, the average homeowner spends
about $6,600 to install a new roof, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000. Don’t be stuck with a hefty roof repair bill. Have it inspected to see if any shingles are damaged and need to be replaced. The fall season is the optimal time to do so, since roofing is best installed when temperatures are cooler. Plus, you’ll catch any problems before winter weather kicks in. • The Gutters. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also known as seepage, is a maintenance issue and often not covered under your home insurance policy. To prevent any major issues, clean gutters at least twice a year in fall and spring. • The Dryer Exhaust Duct. Does it
take you two to three cycles to dry a load of laundry? If so, you may need to clean your dryer vent. One in five (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. But lint build-up can catch fire easily. Over 15,000 dryer fires occurred nationwide from 2010-2014, with the majority being ignited by dust, fiber and lint, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Avoid this disaster with a thorough cleaning at least once a year. • The Fireplace Chimney. Erie Insurance found nearly half (46 percent) of people who own a home with a fireplace never have their chimneys cleaned. However, uncleaned chimneys are a leading cause of structure fires, reports the National Fire Protection Association. So, get the chimney cleaned before the cold weather hits and you find yourself tossing logs in the hearth to keep the house toasty, and then have it cleaned annually.
• The Sump Pump and Pit. Sump pumps remove excess water from homes that would otherwise cause property damage. It’s important to clean a sump pump and its pit annually to keep basements dry and help prevent mold growth and water damage. Do this maintenance project in fall to help protect against heavy rainfalls and accumulated melting snow and ice of winter. For more information on how you can protect your home through the seasons, visit www.ErieInsurance. com. Now that you have your checklist, it’s time to roll up your sleeves while it’s still nice outside. Whether you’re a DIYer or prefer hiring a professional, crossing these projects off your to-do list will help ensure you’re safe and secure before temperatures drop. (Statepoint)
What Are ‘STEAM’ Subjects And Why Do They Matter? If you’ve heard your child’s educators talking about “STEAM” subjects, they are referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
By the same token, it’s important to ensure that your student is taking enough of the right classes to build a strong foundation for future
today’s students and offer expanded features that give students the ability to easily draw three dimensional graphs and view them from
And these subjects are growing in importance, as more industries require a strong mastery of the concepts and skills involved.
This digital piano has been engineered to have an authentic piano feel and concert grand piano sound.
What’s more, a growing body of research shows that exposure to the arts can have a positive impact on one’s performance in science and math-oriented subjects. As your children prepares to succeed in all their classes, keep these things in mind: The Right Classes Talk to your children about ensuring they stack their class schedules with courses that challenge but don’t overwhelm them. It’s easy to overload a schedule with far too many advanced science courses in one semester that can make success unattainable.
Modern music students may prefer using the most cutting-edge instruments, such as Casio’s Compact Grand Piano CGP-700, which features a touch display that gives them the option to choose tones, select rhythms and split and layer sounds, as well as the ability to record and playback music.
The Right Programming

various angles to better analyze their shapes. For example, the fx-CG50, the newest model in Casio’s calculator portfolio, features a picture plot function and color LCD with a full textbook-style display. Likewise, students can build a strong arts foundation by learning to play an instrument.
After school programming can be an ideal opportunity to reinforce STEAM learning in a way that is fun, creative and social.
From the robotics club to the orchestra, find out what your school and larger community offer, and encourage your child to get involved. This programming will likely improve grades and test scores, as well as help your child draw connections between disciplines. While not all trends are worthy of your attention, the importance of STEAM learning can’t be understated and, as a parent, you can help bolster success in these subjects. (StatePoint)

Cleaning Habits With smart pet-friendly flooring and furniture choices (think microfiber sofas), cleaning up after your pet and busy lifestyle should be easy. But remember, it’s easier to clean as you go than it is to wait until things get out of hand.

Why More Americans Should Be Talking About Retirement More than half of Gen X-ers and 40 percent of Baby Boomers have never given advice to their children about planning for retirement, according to a new study from North American Company for Life and Health Insurance. One retirement industry leader says that this lack of discussion about money matters can have a big impact on the future of savings. “Even when Americans are talking about retirement with their children, it’s clear from this study that their advice is vague,” said Ann Hughes, chief distribution officer. “The first step in helping the next generation succeed financially could come from simply, clearly sharing what you’ve learned from your mistakes.” Baby Boomers reported spending money on things they didn’t need, going into too much debt and not saving for retirement when they were young. That’s not what they talked about with their kids, though, according to the study. And with even more Gen X-ers saying they regret spending and accumulating debt than previous generations, they may be on course to repeat their parents’ mistakes. Boomers and Gen X-ers share similar financial fears, according to the study. About 66 percent of Baby Boomers admit they are concerned about outliving their retirement savings. Gen X-ers are even more fearful – 77 percent report the same concern. These fears may stem in part from the fact that many Gen X-ers are getting squeezed – with nearly a fifth of this “sandwich” generation supporting their parents and 71 percent supporting children. To ensure your savings can last a lifetime, start by assessing your current retirement strategy, including benefits such as Social Security and any other income streams. Then look at your future financial needs. You may also wish to investigate options such as a fixed index annuity, which can help protect your nest egg from market volatility and generate steady lifetime income. While the survey results suggest a growing participation in parents’ retirement planning, there is clearly room for improvement in communication on these subjects. “All too often, money becomes a taboo topic or a source of embarrassment,” Hughes said. “Making time for these discussions can help encourage each generation to avoid making the same mistakes their parents did and plan better for the future.” (StatePoint)

5. Make a night of it. Once you know what movie you are watching, consider making the entire gathering a theme night. Encourage guests to dress in costume. Do some research ahead of time and make snacks that go with the movie. You can even add trivia into the equation for an extra bit of fun. (Statepoint)

How To Update Your Wardrobe Without Overhauling Your Entire Closet
Fun floral prints, pops of color and luxury materials are all making appearances in footwear, accessories and ready-to-wear items this fall.
Fashion lovers will have the freedom to update their wardrobe by selecting a few key pieces -- without feeling the need to overhaul their entire closets. Brown and navy have always been a popular color combination. To add some warmth on cool autumn days, consider a pair of camel colored boots with a slim profile to accentuate a navy pencil skirt or shirt dress.
The decadent material can be infused with other popular fall items, like pleated gold skirts, sheer materials and such footwear as a pair of effortlessly chic mules with a hint of sparkle.
• Versatile Prints and Embellishments: A fresh flower arrangement may not first come to mind when we think of the leaves changing colors.

However, this season’s apparel offerings are virtually overflowing with pretty floral patterns and designs that are so lovely and unexpected, they may inspire us all to host fabulous autumn garden parties.
Try an off-the-shoulder top with a favorite pair of frayed vintage jeans and neutral over-the-knee boots. Sky-high boots are on-trend in a big way.
Other embellishments, such as lace, embroidery and iridescent accents that sparkle and shine, even during daytime, will be evident in finishing details to enhance any outfit for a variety of occasions.
