Protect Your Heart Health By Getting Vaccinated While getting vaccinated is important for people of all ages, it’s especially important for adults with heart disease. They are more likely to have serious complications from common diseases such as influenza (flu) or pneumonia that vaccination can help prevent.

If you have heart disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following:
• Zoster vaccine to protect against shingles, if you are 60 years or older. Your healthcare professional may recommend other vaccines as well, based on factors such as your job, lifestyle and travel habits.
Common diseases can become serious in adults with heart disease; they can even increase the risk of another heart attack. The protection that vaccines provide helps reduce these risks, and while adults may know they are at increased risk for a heart attack, they may not know they need vaccines throughout their lives to help protect them from serious illness. Bill Zeigler, 70, didn’t realize he had coronary artery disease (CAD) until 2016, when he began to feel winded after regular exercise and went to his physician’s office for a stress test. It was there that he learned he had CAD, one of the most common forms of cardiovascular disease. After his diagnosis, he knew he had to make important lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthier diet and maintaining his exercise routine. And while

Vaccines are one of the safest and easiest ways to protect your health, even if you are taking prescription medications, say experts. Fortunately, getting a vaccination is easy -- most doctors’ offices, health care centers and local pharmacies offer vaccines, and many are covered by health insurance.
• An annual flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu. • Pneumococcal vaccine to protect against pneumococcal disease between the ages of 19 and 64. Cope with the heat this summer and stay healthy and safe with these helpful tips. • Maintain your air conditioner. The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest, and perhaps most important, maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely. For more complicated tasks, you may wish to hire a professional technician. Likewise, you’ll want to be sure your car’s air conditioner is in good working order, particularly before a major road trip or heat wave. • Stay informed with accurate

Bring water or a sports drink with you when you are exercising, at the pool or even just making your way around town. Make sure to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can quickly dehydrate you.

Being narrow minded and being mean minded, No scope does appear for us to prosper. Hating languages and faith of others, Or others’ practices, nowhere would lead. 3 Home Projects to Transform Your Yard into a Refuge for Birds
Millions of wild birds are killed each year flying into windows, including private homes. Birds face other dangers, too, in your yard, whether they are migrating or fly-
ing locally. Everyone, but especially those who enjoy having birds visit their yards and gardens, should take steps to
make their homes a safer place for birds. “Birds are part of a healthy ecosystem. Turning your home into a refuge for birds is good for the environment, saves lives and can add beauty to your garden,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, a company that offers decals and UV Liquid that are highly visible to birds but barely noticed by people.Schock is offering three home projects you can do to help protect birds. • Do some planting: Creating a bird-friendly yard does not have to be at odds with your desire to have a beautiful garden. Plant trees, shrubs and flowers that provide birds with the nourishment and shelter they need.
The good news is that there are many beautiful varieties of birdfriendly vegetation. To be a good environmental steward, opt for species native to your region. • Make Windows Visible: Preventing birds from striking your windows is easier than you may think because birds can see certain light frequencies that humans can’t. An easy way to make your windows visible to birds in a way that won’t disrupt your view outside your window is by applying UV decals and UV liquid to your windows. Consider those from WindowAlert, which are proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds and prevent window strikes. While the ultraviolet coating will
look like etched glass to you, it will be quite visible to birds. For best application techniques, visit windowalert.com. • Monitor the Cat: If you have cats that like to spend time outdoors, be sure to monitor them to prevent bird hunting. If possible, consider keeping birds safe by creating an outdoor area for your cat to roam that’s enclosed. If you’re handy, you may try building this area yourself, but keep in mind, read-made structures are widely available, too. With a few simple steps, you can convert your garden and yard into a veritable safe haven for birds. (StatePoint)

Updates To Transform Your New House Into Your Dream Home Congratulations, you’ve purchased a home! Now what? You’ve saved a million ideas on Pinterest and you’re ready to start making improvements. If your new kitchen has the blahs, a fresh backsplash may be the solution. In addition to protective and

5. Add a Coat of Paint
7. Coordinate Accessories

Benefits: Provides an instant makeover.
Benefits: Creates a consistent look, easy to install.

Create a cohesive look throughout your home with coordinating accessories. Choose hardware matching in color and style with the existing fixtures, sink and flooring to achieve a sophisticated feel from top to bottom., Easy-to-install accessories, like towel bars and rings with Moen’s innovative Press & Mark technology, ensure fast and accurate installation.

Accessories with the technology have a washable ink stamp to show exactly where to drill (perfect for novice DIYers). Homebuyers (especially first timers) can often be overwhelmed with improvements, but tackling one project at a time will leave you saying “there’s no place like home.” (Statepoint)

How To Make Practicing Music Fun For Kids
While many children enthusiastically elect to study music, not all of them stick with the program. This is because many kids are surprised
by the challenges associated with learning to play an instrument. If you are familiar with the many benefits of music educ a tion, y o u may b e wondering if there i s anything y o u c a n do to help kids com-
mit to practicing. From learning to read music to getting comfortable with an instrument, the process of becoming a musician is rife with challenges and potential frustrations. But by making it fun, you will give kids more of an incentive to stick with it. Make it Personal While music lessons in the past may have followed a very structured formula, today there is an endless wealth of music available online. This gives students more opportunities to personalize their lessons, even at the earliest stages of music education. As kids make progress, let them pick out increasingly challenging songs they want to learn to play. They will be motivated to hone their skills as they begin to see doing so as an opportunity to play more of their favorite music.
Use New Technologies When selecting instruments for kids, consider newer interactive technologies that can make music more fun and aid the learning process. For example, the LK-265, a lighted 61-key keyboard with a Dance Music Mode, which allows kids to get creative while composing and remixing electronic dance music. Tools like Casio’s Voice Fingering Guide, the Step-up Lesson System and Lesson Lite enable beginners to learn built-in songs at their own individual pace. The keyboard also is compatible with an app that allows you to import any standard MIDI file off the Internet, giving users opportunities to learn what they want. Its LCD display and light up function help students master both music notation and correct hand positioning. Users can also track their progress

Encourage your child to join the school band or orchestra. These programs can introduce students to a wide-range of instruments, musical styles and theory, and help them make lifelong friendships. Many programs will carry them throughout high school. Or, if they prefer, help them form a musical ensemble or band with friends or To help your children develop a long-lasting appreciation for music, you can provide them with opportunities to learn and play in ways that are fun and engaging. 3 Beautiful Ways To Add Pops Of Color To Your Kitchen
If your kitchen is bland or boring, it’s time for an update.
Consider those home projects that add pops of color and beauty, in-
spiring you to do your best culinary work. Here are three beautiful ways to add new hues to any kitchen. Natural Color For a verdant, fragrant and useful pop of color, grow an herb garden right in your kitchen. From lavender to basil to chives, you can brighten your kitchen with natural colors, while adding some zest to salads, stews and more. Evaluate your kitchen for direct sunlight to determine the ideal size and shape of your garden, then get creative. Many people choose to create a hanging wall garden. Others prefer a tiered counter for the floor or pots for the countertop. Functional Focal Point Consider creating a focal point in your kitchen in an eye-catching color that adds vitality to the space. One great way to do this is by focusing on the heart of every kitch-
en -- the range. Experts point out that black finishes in the kitchen have reemerged as a trending design element this year. So if you do choose black, you may prefer to emphasize this selection with a gloss finish, which can add a layer of elegance, drama and sophistication to the kitchen. Standard colors are offered everywhere, but for something more unexpected, seek out brands that also offer customization in addition to classic choices like gloss black, such as ILVE. Through its Custom Color Program, you can select one of 213 RAL Classic colors for your range or hood. The brand, known for professional quality custom Italian appliances for the home, offers ranges in six standard American sizes, as well as a “city-sized” 24” option. Both single and double oven options are available, as well as dual fuel and all gas connection choices. What’s more, you can further customize the legs and accents of your
appliance in various finishes and looks. Another brand offering brilliant color options such as gloss red and light blue is Verona, which offers appliances that use exclusive cooking technology to minimize fuel and energy consumption, and provide safe and efficient cooking. Brilliant Backsplash For a cohesive look, consider the focal point of your kitchen and build out from there with a beautiful backsplash. Backsplashes are stylishly versatile and nearly any kitchen benefits aesthetically from the addition of one. hoices of materials include mosaic glass tiles, marble and metal -- the possibilities are nearly endless – giving you a lot of flexibility in color and texture. The kitchen is the center of the home, where families make not only meals, but memories, too. Add beautiful bursts of color to the space to make it a place you love to spend time. (StatePoint)
India’s Role In Shaping Modern Perfume
Perfume is often associated with France, appointed the world’s capital of perfume, and for good reason. In the 17th century, Southern Europe had a booming perfume trade that rocked the continent’s economy as perfume became a symbol of wealth and status among aristocrats of the day. But to focus only on Europe when exploring the history of perfume is not seeing the full picture. The Egyptians, Persians, and Arabs all had important roles in furthering the commerce of incense and perfumes long before they took hold in the West. As legend has it, the first perfume was actually bottled in the 16th century in present day India under the Mughal empire. At its peak, the Mughul empire covered nearly all of the Indian subcontinent and large swaths of
modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was the world’s largest economic power in its time, with a seat of power in Agra, where spectacular architecture like the Taj Mahal remains a testament to the dynasty’s power. According to legend, the world’s first perfume came about at the elaborate wedding ceremony of Emperor Jahangir and his beautiful bride, Nur Jahan. As the young newlyweds took a celebratory boat ride in a moat filled with rose petals, the bride reached her hand into the fragrant waters and noticed an oil had formed on the water’s surface. The steaming midday sun had steeped the petals, causing their essential oil to separate, as is done in steam distillation, a technique not yet discovered.
The young Emperor wanted to give a gift to his new bride, so he had the rose essence captured and bottled in a base of sandalwood oil as a redolent memory of that fateful day. The essence, called “Attar of Roses,” became a staple in Indian households for centuries. Thus, before perfume became common as a means to cover unpleasant odors in the West, it was a symbol of love and remembrance in the East. Julia Kahlig-Garuba is the owner of Austin-based fragrance company, Herb & Root. Her bestselling fragrance is inspired by this story, and aptly called Attar of Roses.

maintained in this way.
The term ‘Qurbani’ means the act of slaughtering of an animal right after Hajj on the day of Eid-ulAdha or three days after, with the intent to please God and share the meat with the needy and friends. According to Hidaya.org, “Animals that can be sacrificed are goats, cows and camels.” Muslims all over the world take part in this religious obligation during Eid if they are able to afford it.
The actual slaughtering of the animals takes place at a ranch outside Austin according the rules of meat
Non-profit organizations such as MCSS (Muslim Community Support Services (512) 432-5986) have made arrangements for pickup of meat from your home for the refugees. They also have drop off points in case any customer prefers to not leave the meat for charity at the store. Mr. Mohsin Lari, the cofounder, is always available to help and is only a phone call away.
The Islamic Society of North America ICNA released a statement on August 22, “It is confirmed that Hajj authorities in Makkah have announced the start of [the month of] Hajj this year to be on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, and Eid-ul-Adha on Friday, September 1, 2017.” Austin has arrangements for Qurbani available through smaller grocery stores that sell Halal meat. Apart from this, there are also options of online donations for Qurbani in other parts of the world. One such store, World Food and Halal Market (9616 N Lamar Blvd # 110, 512-832-8365), has always offered Qurbani arrangement to its customers. At this time of the year, customers are able to place order for the number of goats or cow meat they are interested in slaughtering. Payment was taken ahead of time in previous years, but this year, clients are supposed to make the payment at the time of pickup depending upon the weight of the
slaughtering. The cuts of meat are based upon what the customer has ordered. The meat packers put the meat in two-pound bags for ease in pickup. The pickup point is the store. The meat is hygienically packed and the store calls the customers when their meat is ready for pickup. Traditionally, one order of Qurbani meat is divided into three parts. One part goes to charity, one to friends and one to the family placing the order. The stores have arrangements in giant freezers to hold the meat for charity. Refugees and other persons in need stop by at the stores for to pick up free meat that people leave at the stores just for this purpose. The giver does charity and does not know who received it. The receiver does not know who gave it. A kind of a sanctity and respect for the giver and receiver is
Customers take home their own share to cook and enjoy and also take with them the party they distribute between friends. They divide the meat and either ask their friends to come and pickup the meat, or they go drop it off to friends’ homes. Families have fun doing this part too as it brings them closer to their friends. A second option of Qurbani online is available through Islamic Relief. They are a non-profit famous for taking care of the destitute all over the world. They are a trusted website and people go to them when they do not want to do charity in other parts of the world. Both options of doing Qurbani in Austin or somewhere else are obligations that Muslims all over the world use. No option is better than the other. Both have their pros and cons. We are just thankful that both are available in Austin, which is a home to an increasing number of South Asians who celebrate Eidul-Adha every year.

Do You Practice Safe Sun Habits?

Kalasree Dr. Sunanda Nair’s performance
By Baskar
As a Mohiniyattam enthusiast and student, I have always wanted to watch my guru, Kalasree Dr. Sunanda Nair’s performance. It happened on 12th May 2017 with three different stories. when she transformed herself into the most powerful Amba! A character from the Mahabharata. All the attention of the audience was on her when she depicting Amba’s reaction after her abduction. A powerful moment in the act was when Amba realized that there is no way she can go back to her wedding! The way dancer depicted that scene with the sudden drop of her shoulders and utter disappointment on her face, everyone of us felt Amba’s helplessness! Then comes Shikhandi, a transgender warrior of the epic Mahabharata! The emotions were oozing out of the dancer like nectar! It’s obvious that a steadfast dancer of her caliber can depict the emotions of anyone! When his arrow
got released from the bow with a thud towards Bhishma, performer
took everyone to another level of ecstasy! Her graceful performance
made us feel like we are a part of her story!
Oru magal, is a short depiction of mother-daughter relationship. The performance commenced with the show of pure love and joy of a mother watching her little girl in the cradle with a sweet lullaby music in the background and changed its tone according to the situation. A beautiful moment came when the mother used a blind fold to cover her eye and let the little one hide. While performing a dance like Mohiniyattam where the most significant, expressive part of body is eye, still she closed her eye and started dancing! When the little girl becomes teenager and having attachment with a boy, performer’s subtle moves changed the setting to a mom’s fear about her daughter’s safety and life was astonishing. Most of our eyes were filled with tears. Bhavayami Raghuramam is a beautiful rendition by Dr.Sunanda Nair composed by Maharaja Swathi Thirunnal depicting the story of Ramayana. When she was performing different characters in Ramayana, her actions, moves,
looks, everything made us feel like there is no dancer just the characters. The most difficult character among all is ‘Shoorpanaka’ who is an ugly demon in the epic. Sringara is the most predominant Bhava in Mohiniyattam! But to present a Sringara Bhava of an ugly demon is not that easy. The performer tugged the audience through Sita swayamvar, vanavasa, Rama-Ravana war, Lanka dahanam and finished her two hour enchanting performance with Sree Rama pattabhishekam!! If the performer can take you through the emotions of the story till the end without losing your attention for a second that is masterpiece. I should also give credits to the extremely talented musicians! Kalasree Kalamandalam Gireesan for Vocal rendition, Janardhana Rao on Mridhangam, Kalasree G S Rajan on Flute, and Swami Ananda Nadayogi on Violin gave the performance a strong backup! Anyone who has seen her performance will not deny the fact that she is a strong pillar of the art form and a true cultural ambassador.

Austin Chaiwala Transitions From A Stall To A Food Truck

Right around Eid ul Fitr time (June 27), the two friends materialized their business into the Austin Chaiwala Food truck after a GoFundMe
A happening location, the Austin Chaiwala is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Weekend hours start at 11 a.m.
The two accountants were avid tea drinkers, but since tea was not available at work, they would buy coffee to carry them through the rest of the workday.
Both friends run the truck after office hours. Both still work as accountants. Wajahat Zaidi is there on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Ahmed Malik on Mondays and Wednesdays. The friends share the load on the weekend.
On a Thursday, when the two were having lunch and missing the good coffee, the friends day-dreamed about a tea truck parked outside where they could just have the perfectly brewed tea. Both looked at each other and sat up! Tea truck was a great idea and both grabbed their laptops to immediately start googling what to do. They hashed out the plan and made a website right there and then! Thus came into being the Austin Chaiwala that started as a tea catering service for offices and special events. The two friends first perfected the

On August 21, 2017, Austin joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the “Great American Eclipse”, with on the spot ‘eclipse parties’. People gathered outside buildings and businesses to witness the partial eclipse seen in Austin between 11 and 1:30 p.m.
People were commenting loudly about what they saw in the sky.
It was a time when strangers became friends and shared glasses to take a peek at the sun. While many people sported the right eye protecting shades, more hands-on people had used cardboard boxes to create a Box Pinhole Projector, as it was dangerous to view the eclipse without proper eye protection.
A casually dressed man who had built the Box Pinhole projector by cutting a rectangular hole at the end of a box and putting foil with a pinhole on it, was letting people around him take turns to see the shadow of the eclipse through the peep hole in the box. Some people were sharing their eyewear.
When one elderly gentleman said he could see nothing, a woman started guiding him and pointed to the right area in the sky.

know the real flavor of Kashmiri chai. Star anise is a twist that Zaidi has added to the Kashmiri tea and that really brings out the rich and royal aroma. That complimented by Aloo samosas is a great combination. The samosas are a real treat! Usually big potato samosas have a thick crust, but this crust is paper thin and crisp. Zaidi fried them on the spot for us as he chatted about his business. Whoever came was a friend. A couple walked over with a baby in the stroller and had the iced tea with mint and strawberries. Zaidi blended fresh mint on the spot in the tea. What a treat! It was almost like ‘ghar ki baat’ [being at home], the ultimate aim of every restaurant to give a home feeling to what is served outside. Masala Chai, Karak Chai, Doodh Patti and Desi coffee were all authentic. One could not help, but wonder how so much emphasis is being given to details. Perhaps that is why in such a short span of time Zaidi and Malik have zoomed past many other food trucks. They are determined to make it work and are trying their best to pay off the loan they took to buy the trailer. We sat on chairs surrounding a table under a sun umbrella right by the truck. Zaidi said restrooms were available in Rosedale Market. He praised masala fries that they have added to the menu. “Most of our clients are from Pakistan, India and Bengal with 10 to 20% locals,” said Zaidi although on this particular day everyone who came was just local. “Once a musician teacher from Seattle made a song about the tea,” beamed Zaidi as he shared the #austinchaiwala instagram post of the bearded white musician playing his guitar. Zaidi has many interesting stories and he enjoys his work. They still cater for special events. For information email at chaiwala@austinchaiwala.com or just park your car at Rosedale Market and walk over for “gupshup” and tea. You can find Austin Chaiwala at http:// www.austinchaiwala.com/

Christ The Redeemer Statue (Rio De Janeiro)
Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with the French engineer Albert Caquot.
with open arms, a symbol of peace, was chosen.
Local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the statue. French sculptor Paul Landowski created the work.
Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida fashioned the face. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the statue is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, excluding its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide. The statue weighs 635 metric tons (625 long, 700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio. A symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. Vincentian priest, Pedro Maria Boss, first suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado in the mid 1850s to honor Princess Isabel, princess regent of Brazil and the daughter of Emperor Pedro II, however the project died due to lack of support. In 1889 the country became a republic, and due to the separation of church and state, the idea of the statue was dismissed. The Catholic Circle[clarification needed] of Rio made a second proposal for a landmark statue on the mountain in 1920. The group organized an event called Semana do Monumento (“Monument Week”) to attract donations and collect signatures to support the building of the statue. What motivated the organization was what they perceived as ‘Godlessness’ in the society at the time. The donations came mostly from Brazilian Catholics. The designs considered for the “Statue of the Christ” included a representation of the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus with a globe in his hands, and a pedestal symbolizing the world. The statue of Christ the Redeemer
In 1922, Landowski commissioned fellow Parisian Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida, who studied sculpture at the Fine Arts Conservatory in Bucharest and in Italy. Leonida’s portrayal of Christ’s face made him famous. A group of engineers and technicians studied Landowski’s submissions and felt building the structure of reinforced concrete (designed by Albert Caquot) instead of steel was more suitable for the crossshaped statue. The outer layers are soapstone, chosen for its enduring qualities and ease of use. Construction took nine years, from 1922 to 1931 and cost the equivalent of US$250,000 (equivalent to $3,400,000 in 2016) and the monument opened on October 12, 1931. During the opening ceremony, the statue was to be lit by a battery of floodlights turned on remotely
by Italian shortwave radio inventor Guglielmo Marconi, stationed 5,700 miles (9,200 km) away in Rome but because of bad weather, the lights were activated on-site. In October 2006, on the 75th anniversary of the statue’s completion, Archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Eusebio Oscar Scheid, consecrated a chapel, named after Brazil’s patron saint— Our Lady of the Apparition, under the statue, allowing Catholics to hold baptisms and weddings there. Lightning struck the statue during a violent thunderstorm on February 10, 2008, causing some damage to the fingers, head and eyebrows. The Rio de Janeiro state government initiated a restoration effort to replace some of the outer soapstone layers and repair the lightning rods on the statue. Lightning damaged it again, on January 17, 2014, dislodging a finger on the right hand. In 2010, a massive restoration of the statue began. Work included cleaning, replacing the mortar and soapstone on the exterior, restoring iron in the internal structure, and waterproofing the monument. Vandals attacked the statue during renovation, spraying paint along the arm. Mayor Eduardo Paes called the act “a crime against the nation”. The culprits later apologized and presented themselves to the police. In 2015 two Russian and Ukrainian urban explorers, Vadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov from Ontheroofs, climbed the statue with captured video footage and photos.

Akbar And Birbal
The Pot of the Wit
Once Emperor Akbar became very angry at his favorite minister
Birbal. He asked Birbal to leave the kingdom and go away. Accepting the command of the Emperor, Birbal left the kingdom and started working in a farmer’s farm in an unknown village far away under a different identity. As months passed, Akbar started to miss Birbal. He was struggling to solve many issues in the empire without Birbal’s advice. He regretted a decision, asking Birbal to leave the empire in anger. So Akbar sent his soldiers to find Birbal, but they failed to find him. No one knew where Birbal was. Akbar finally found a trick. He sent a message to the head of every village to send a pot full of the wit to the Emperor. If the pot full of wit can not be sent, fill the pot with diamonds and jewels. This message also reached Birbal, who lived in one of the villages. The people of the village got together.
Birbal who was sitting among the villagers said, “Give me the pot, I will fill the wit in one month’s end”.
Everyone trusted Birbal and agreed to give him a chance. They still didn’t know his identity. Birbal took the pot with him and went back to the farm. He had planted watermelons on his farm. He selected a small watermelon and without cutting it from the plant, he put that in the pot. He started looking after it by providing water and fertilizer regularly. Within a few days, the watermelon grew into a pot so much that it was impossible to get it out of the pot. Soon, the watermelon reached to the same size as the pot from inside. Birbal then cut the watermelon from the vine and separated it with the pot. Later, he sent a pot to Emperor Akbar with a message that “Please remove the wit without cutting it from the pot and without breaking the pot”.
All started talking about what to do now? The wit is not a thing, which can be filled in the pot.
Akbar watched the watermelon in the pot and realized that this can only be Birbal’s Work. Akbar himself came to the village, took Birbal back with him.
How will we arrange for diamonds and jewels to fill the pot and send to the Emperor?
Moral: Don’t hasten the decision. Think hard to find a solution for the strangest situations.

Safe Summer Driving Tips For Teens And Young Adults
Warm weather means more young drivers on the road as they head to summer jobs, parties and embark on road trips. Often, young drivers feel invincible, but they
shouldn’t take their safety for granted. Many experts say driver safety begins with tires, as they are the only thing connecting a car to the road. To help teens and young adults stay safe on the roads this summer and

with less experience behind the wheel. More than 50 percent of American vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association survey.
• Check tire condition. Damaged tires can shorten tire life and even cause tire failure. Visually check tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges.
To test pressure, wait until tires are cool -- a minimum of three hours after driving. Then, remove the tire’s valve cap and press the top of a tire pressure gauge firmly on the valve stem.

A reading will pop up on the gauge. If the reading is lower than the recommended level, add air and check again. Once the recommended pressure is reached, replace the valve cap. • Check tire tread. Proper tread depth helps maintain traction, improves handling of the vehicle and prevents hydroplaning. To check it, insert the edge of a penny into the most worn groove of the tire tread, with Lincoln’s head down and facing the driver.
If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there is at least a minimum acceptable • Check tire pressure. Proper air pressure im- amount of tread. young drivers for safer driving. For example, the free Tread Wisely app from Cooper Tire and NOYS, informs users how to check their tires using helpful videos and allows them to set automatic monthly reminders to perform tire checks. Other videos on the app instruct young drivers how to change a flat tire, what to do if they are in an accident, and how to handle other issues on the road. The app also includes a unique “I got there” feature, which reminds young drivers to let parents or friends know after they make it to their destination safely, using pre-loaded text messages. More tire tips and information about the Tread Wisely app can be found at TreadWisely.org. “As a parent, you can’t help but worry,” says race car driver Johnny Unser, whose teen daughter Loni uses the Tread Wisely app. “However, you can give your kids the tools and information they need to succeed out there on the road.” (StatePoint)

• Beware of Blisters: As temperatures rise, feet often sweat and swell in shoes, causing chafing and blisters.
That post-pedicure look just makes people feel more “put together.”
Before you head outside, protect your feet by applying adhesive bandages to spots that are likely to rub. You can also go a step further to minimize irritation by choosing the right shoes for the weather.
To maintain this look at home, Sanofi Consumer Healthcare, the makers of new GOLD BOND Ultimate Pedi Smooth, are sharing a few tips for getting your feet sandal-ready this season -- and keeping them that way.
Opt for a more structured sandal on hot, humid days and break out your strappy sandals or heels on cooler days.

Navratri Eid al-Adha

wherein goddess Durga battles and emerges victorious over the buffalo demon to help restore Dharma. In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymous with “Rama Lila” and Dussehra that celebrates the battle and victory of god Rama over the demon king Ravana. In southern states, the victory of different goddesses, of Rama or Saraswati is celebrated. In all cases, the common theme is the battle and victory of Good over Evil based on a regionally famous epic or legend such as the Ramayana or the Devi Mahatmya. Celebrations include stage decorations, recital of the legend, enacting of the story, and chanting of the scriptures of Hinduism. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture. On the final day, called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as river and ocean, or alternatively the statue symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil’s destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami or Dussehra. Navaratri is celebrated in different ways throughout India. Some
The Rama Navami remembers the birth of Rama, preceded by nine days of Ramayana recital particularly among the Vaishnava temples. In the past, Shakta Hindus used to recite Durga’s legends during the Chaitra Navaratri, but this practice around the spring equinox has been declining. For most contemporary Hindus, it is the Navaratri around the autumn equinox that is the major festival and the one observed. To Bengali Hindus and to Shakta Hindus outside of eastern and northeastern states of India, the term Navaratri implies Durga Puja in the warrior goddess aspect of Devi. In other traditions of Hinduism, the term Navaratri implies something else or the celebration of Hindu goddess but in her more peaceful forms such as Saraswati – the Hindu goddess of knowledge, learning, music and other arts. In Nepal, Navaratri is called Dasain, and is a major annual homecoming and family event that celebrates the bonds between elders and youngsters with Tika Puja, as well as across family and community members.
Before he sacrificed his son God intervened by sending his angel Jibra’il (Gabriel), who then put a sheep in his son’s place. In commemoration of this, an animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts: the family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy. In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. In the international (Gregorian) calendar, the dates vary from year to year drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
As Abraham was preparing for his return journey back to Canaan, Hagar asked him, “Did God order you to leave us here? Or are you leaving us here to die?” Abraham did not even look back. He just nodded, afraid that he would be too sad and that he would disobey God. Hagar said, “Then God will not waste us; you can go”. Though Abraham had left a large quantity of food and water with Hagar and Ishmael, the supplies quickly ran out, and within a few days the two began to feel the pangs of hunger and dehydration.
Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a prayer of two rakats followed by a sermon (khutbah). Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the descent of the Hujjaj, the pilgrims performing the Hajj, from Mount Arafat, a hill east of Mecca. Eid sacrifice may take place until sunset on the 13th day of Dhu alHijjah. The days of Eid have been singled out in the Hadith as “days of remembrance” and considered the holiest days in the Islamic Calendar. The takbir (days) of Tashriq are from the Maghrib prayer of the 29th of Dhul-Qadah up to the Maghrib prayer of the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah (thirteen days and nights).
Hagar ran up and down between two hills, al-Safa and Al-Marwah, seven times, in her desperate quest for water. Exhausted, she finally collapsed beside her baby Ishmael and prayed to God for deliverance. Miraculously, a spring of water gushed forth from the earth at the feet of baby Ishmael. Other accounts have the angel Jibra’il, striking the earth and causing the spring to flow in abundance. With this secure water supply, known as the Zamzam Well, they were not only able to provide for their own needs, but were also able to trade water with passing nomads for food and supplies.
According to Islamic tradition, the valley of Mecca (in present-day Saudi Arabia) was a dry, rocky, and uninhabited place. God instructed Abraham to bring Hagar (Hājar), his Arabian (Adnan) wife, and Ish-
Years later, Abraham was instructed by God to return from Canaan to build a place of worship adjacent to Hagar’s well (the Zamzam Well). Abraham and Ishmael constructed a stone and mortar struc-
One of the main trials of Abraham’s life was to face the command of God to sacrifice his dearest possession, his son. The son is not named in the Quran, but Muslims believe it to be Ishmael, though it is mentioned as Isaac in the Bible. Upon hearing this command, Abraham prepared to submit to will of God. During this preparation, Shaitan (the Devil) tempted Abraham and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out God’s commandment, and Abraham drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at him. In commemoration of their rejection of Satan, stones are thrown at symbolic pillars during the Stoning of the Devil during Hajj rites. When Abraham attempted to cut his throat, he was astonished to see that his son was unharmed and instead, he found a ram which was slaughtered. Abraham had passed the test by his willingness to carry out God’s command. This story is known as the Akedah in Judaism (Binding of Isaac) and originates in the Tora, the first book of Moses (Genesis, Ch. 22).

New Ways To Safeguard Skin Year-Round Before And After Spending Time Outdoors A day outdoors can be enjoyable, but keep in mind that this UV exposure can take its toll on skin health. Researchers are identifying new potential ways to promote skin health from the inside out -- before, during and after you spend
time outdoors. “Maintaining healthy DNA function safeguards your skin before and after spending time outdoors.” says Dr. Michael A. Smith, MD. According to Dr. Smith, researchers have confirmed that nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, plays a significant role in producing Adenosine Tri-phosphate (ATP), the molecule that fuels all your cells and powers their intracellular machinery. By doing so, it also facilitates healthy DNA function. This is especially important as UV exposure can affect production of ATP in skin cells, sapping those cells of the energy needed for their protective mechanisms to function
Onam
(Continued From Page 01) Onam is a major annual event for Malayali people in and outside Kerala. It marks the summer harvest and is celebrated with numerous festivities. It includes Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummati kali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and other celebrations. It is the New Year day for Malayali Hindus. Onam is the official state festival of Kerala with public holidays that start four days from Onam Eve (Uthradom). It is celebrated by Malayali diaspora around the world. Though a Hindu festival, non-Hindu communities of Kerala participate in Onam celebrations considering it as a cultural festival. However, some non-Hindus in Kerala denounce its celebration as a cultural event because they consider it as a religious festival. According to the Hindu mythology, Mahabali was the great great grandson of a Brahmin sage, Kashyapa and grandson of Prahlada. This links it to the Puranic mythology of Prahlada of Holika fame in Hinduism, who is the son of demon dictator Hiranyakashyap. Prahlada, despite being born to a demonic Asura father who hated Vishnu, rebelled against his father’s persecution of people and worshipped Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap tries to kill his son Prahlada, but is slained by Vishnu in his Narasimha avatar, Prahlada is saved. Prahlada’s grandson Mahabali came to power by defeating the gods (Devas), and taking over the three worlds. According to Vaishnavism mythology, the defeated Devas approached Vishnu for help in their battle with Mahabali. Vishnu refused to join the gods in violence against Mahabali, because Mahabali was a good ruler and his own devotee. He, instead, decided to test Mahabali’s devotion at an opportune moment. Mahabali, after his victory over the gods, declared that he will perform Yajna (homa sacrifices) and grant anyone any request during the Yajna. Vishnu took the avatar of a dwarf boy called Vamana and approached Mahabali. The king offered anything to the boy – gold, cows, elephants, villages, food, whatever he wished. The boy said that one must not seek more than one needs, and all he needs is the property right over a piece of land that measures “three paces”. Mahabali agreed. The Vamana grew and covered everything Mahabali ruled over in just two paces. For the third pace, Mahabali offered himself, an act which Vishnu accepted as evidence of Mahabali’s devotion. Vishnu granted him a boon, by which Mahabali could visit again, once every year, the lands and people he previously ruled. This revisit marks the festival of Onam, as reminder of the virtuous rule and his humility in keeping his promise before Vishnu. The last day of Mahabali’s stay is remembered with a nine course vegetarian Onasadya feast.
properly. Dr. Smith points out that as one ages, skin loses some of its natural defense mechanisms, however, nicotinamide has been shown to support the natural immune response needed to safeguard against the age-related effects of UV exposure. Nicotinamide is found in dairy milk, yeast and beer, but to be sure to get your daily dose of nicotinamide, consider an oral supplement, such as Life Extension Shade Factor. Formulated to nourish skin from within the body, it provides 500 mg of vitamin B3. It also contains an extract that helps manage cellular changes in the body that can lead to
premature aging from outdoor activity and promotes healthy DNA function, as well as Red Orange Complex, which supports the body’s natural immune response. More information can be found at shadefactorsupp.com. According to Dr. Smith, this product is not a substitute for topical sunscreens. If you love the great outdoors, there is no need to give up your favorite hobbies, even as you age and your skin becomes more sensitive. New research suggests an inside out approach may be an effective way to help safeguard your body’s largest organ. (StatePoint)

Vivegam Movie Review: Ajith Is Charismatic But Let Down By Silly Scenes Cast: Ajith, Kajal Aggarwal, Vivek Oberoi, Akshara Haasan and Karunakaran
Director Siva and Ajith, in their third consecutive collaboration, go

Siva, very consistently, has been raising the bar for action in his films. Except for the introduction action sequence, the film is high on top notch action stretches and the portion involving Akshara, in a road chase on the streets of Serbia, is truly exceptional.
Director: Siva Rating: 2.5 (Out of 5) Vivegam is Ajith’s show all the way, and the star in his best physical self, is a joy to watch on screen as a secret agent set out to save the world on the brink of a nuclear attack. His charismatic screen presence is the film’s saving grace, apart from great action which unfortunately isn’t complemented by good writing. In hindsight, the film needed a good writer, tighter screenplay with more tension and edge-ofthe-seat moments.

If only these action scenes were well-backed by solid drama, we could have empathized more with the characters.

Akshara, for instance, is introduced as the widely popular hacker, and she is wanted by the Interpol. When we meet her, we learn very little about her and who she really is. Similarly, we don’t quite understand why Vivek turns rogue, and despite turning in an earnest perfor-
mance, the caricaturish portrayal of his character is a big letdown. In a surprisingly good role, Kajal Aggarwal plays her part aptly. She plays Ajith’s wife and their chemistry works well, ticking the right emotional note wherever necessary. However, it also goes overboard at times. For instance, when Ajith is being chased on the streets of Serbia, Kajal calls and asks him if he wants to listen to their baby’s heartbeat. Seriously? It is silly scenes such as these that spoil the sporadic thrills the film has to offer. Ajith’s physical transformation deserves special praise, and he has worked really hard, despite shooting in extreme climatic conditions. He carries the film on his shoulders and turns in a never seen before kind of performance.

India’s Oldest Cinematographer Ramananda Sengupta Passes Away
Country’s oldest cinematographer Ramanda Sengupta, who worked with legends like Jean Renoir, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, died
in Kolkata on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement. Sengupta, 101, left behind his son. Born on May 8, 1916 in Dhaka, Sengupta studied in Santiniketan in his formative years and got his first break in 1938 when he joined
Film Corporation of India in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as an assistant cameraman. His first film as a full-time cinematographer was in
‘Purbaraag’ directed by Ardhendu Mukherjee in 1946. Two years later, French Adirector Jean Renoir came to Kolkata to shoot The River (Le Fleuve, released in 1951), and Sengupta joined him initially as a clapper boy, but ended up as the operat-
ing cameraman while the auteur’s nephew Claude Renoir was director of photography. He worked with Ritwik Ghatak on his debut film Nagarik, that was completed in 1952, but released a quarter century later in 1977 after the film maker’s death. In 1955, when Mrinal Sen made his debut film Raat Bhore, he chose Sengupta as his cinematographer. Sengupta worked behind the camera in over 70 films, including landmark ones like Shilpi, Nishithe, Bindur Chhele, Personal Assistant, Headmaster and Teen Bhubaner Pare. Sengupta was also a founding member of the Technicians’ Studio in South Kolkata’s Tollygunge. Condoling Sengupta’s demise, the chief minister said his death has caused an irrepairable loss to the world of films. “I pray that his soul rest in peace. I extend my sympathies to his bereaved family,” said Banerjee.

Bollywood’s dream merchants are losing their magic touch In the first seven months of this year, domestic net box office collections (NBOC) of the top 10 Bollywood movies in terms of revenues from theatres -- excluding the dubbed version of Baahubali 2 -- fell by over 19 per cent from Rs 1,022 crore (Rs 10.22 billion) in 2016 to Rs 823 crore (Rs 8.23 billion) in 2017. n 2016, producers forked out Rs 525 crore (Rs 5.25 billion) to make the top 10 movies, but made up nearly double the amount from domestic NBOC. Of course, much of it was owing to the success of Salman Khan’s Sultan. In 2017, the total spent on the top 10 films was Rs 714 crore (Rs 7.14 billion), but the return shrunk, with no blockbusters. The only high point was the unprecedented success of Baahubali 2 that rustled up a new record of Rs 510 crore (Rs 5.10 billion) in the domestic NBOC -- constituting 40 per cent of the total collections for Hindi films in this period. If the movie is considered in the top 10 earners -- although it was a Telugu film produced in Hyderabad and not a Bollywood production -the NBOC growth would go up by 26 per cent. I find people of that era more dramatic, more emotional than today’s generation. Nowadays, people fall in love, they break up and move on easily... Between two friends, people come close and go away easily. But earlier it was not like that.” “These days, everything looks the same. For me, drama comes from complexity... From how, in the same situation, three people thinking differently and that is changing the situation. Earlier, if friendship turned into enmity, it would go to a disastrous level. In fact, if you look at the international entertainment, whether it is ‘House Of Cards’ or ‘Game of Thrones’, it’s all about drama.”

While the filmmaker explored the darker side of the film industry and
life of an actress in ‘The Dirty Picture’ and the world of a gangster in ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’, he always attempts to approach the subjects differently and utilizes the power of modern technology in storytelling. Commenting on that, Luthria said, “I always try to create the different texture of every story. You cannot find the world of ‘Once Upon..’ in ‘Baadshaho’ because the latter is set in Rajasthan. The geography, culture, light, camera angles everything is very different that of the city Mumbai.” “And I think that is one of the element as a director I emphasise on... use of technology. if I am narrating the story of an old era using modern technology, it becomes a visual treat for the audience. That’s how it works.” The story of ‘Baadshaho’ revolves around a royal family of Rajasthan and how their property gets looted after the
declaration of Emergency. As the film features Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Vidyut Jammwal, Luthria believes that casting different stars create better interest about the film among the audience. Talking about his equation with his actors, especially with Ajay, he said, “I think with any individual I meet, the first 10 minutes of our conversation defines our equation - either you get along, bond over something, or you don’t. with Ajay, that’s what happens, even though we do not talk to each other every day, we know we are bonded. So you don’t work on developing an equation, it happens naturally.” ‘Baadshaho’ is releasing on September 1.

NATAYANA KATHA – A DIVINE EXPERIENCE Nārāyaneeyam is the story of Lord Narayana. It was composed by Melpatthur Narayana Bhattathiri. Bhattathiri, who was crippled, is believed to have penned this masterpiece sitting in the Guruvayur temple. Local legend says that on the hundredth day, he had the vision of the Lord and rendered a graphic description of this form, after which he was immediately cured of his disease. Shjit Nambiar and Parvathy Menon are young, talented Bhartanatyam dancers who have established a very high reputation internationally. They have produced classic shows like Krishna, Under the Banyan Tree and Meghdootam (all of them staged in Austin by IFA). Habitually performing as a duo, the dancer couple cashed in on their long experience in this show. Shijith Nambiar and Parvathy Menon’s presentation on the life of Bhattathiri and excerpts from Narayaneeyam is imaginatively choreographed and beautifully presented. The program includes a description of Guruvayur temple with daily Pooja, description of Lord Guruvayurappan, Raas Kreeda of Krishna and Gopis of Vrindavan, Mathura pravesham, followed by the Kuchela episode ending up in a magnificient Viswarupam, in the silence of the ‘paramananda sandoha lakshmeem’ prayer.
