Welcome

03 Welcome

The inaugural Australian Glass and Window Association Design Awards have been judged, and the winners announced to great acclaim. While both the AGGA and AWA have had a long history of celebrating design excellence, the new awards set the foundation for the encouragement and celebration of innovation and excellence within our broad and multi-faceted industry. So much so that one of the first actions of the inaugural board was to confirm the organisation’s commitment to encouraging and celebrating excellence within the industry in all its forms. To that end, we set out to merge the previous awards into an integrated awards program that is capable of displaying to stakeholders, both within and outside the industry, the workmanship, design and consistent best practice demonstrated by so many of our members. The 2019 Design Awards saw over 100 entries from seven states and territories. It was the first time that the window and door categories were first judged on a state basis, with the state winners proceeding to the National Awards. A judging panel, with a range of relevant backgrounds from outside the immediate industry, selected the National Award winners. The task was extremely difficult based on the quality of the entries. As a result, a high number of Highly Commended Awards were presented this year. This new level of competition and true independent judging helped ensure each state put its best foot forward to deliver what was a closerun final national competition. While it is true there can be only one winner, it was clear from conversations at both the State and National Awards that all benefited from such high-calibre competition. While the winning glow still resonates with those entrants who took out their category, one thing is for sure − next year will be bigger and better. As you look through this showcase of industry innovation and commitment to quality, we encourage everyone to be heartened, encouraged and motivated by the standards of excellence and innovation within our industry, and also to be emboldened to enter next year’s competition. As the old adage goes, ‘You have to be in it to win it!’

Judges Comments: “Stunning”. It provides the transparency and connections that were required in the design together with energy efficiency and excellent light transmission while requiring exacting glass measurements.

The newly opened UTS Central building’s high-performance glass-encased facade comprises two distinguishing sections, a 5-level podium (by G.James) and 12-storey tower. Architects FJMT had a vision to create a futuristic feel and heightened sense of openness, goals made possible with the extensive glazed curtain wall installation.

Opened in August 2019, the UTS Central building’s standout podium structure combines the use of glass, aluminium and steel to frame a series of graceful curves and waves that form the dominating feature of this curtain wall. g

The podium houses the new UTS library, a scholarly reading room, various student study spaces, and a food court opening up onto the Alumni Green. The project presented many challenges, throughout, from the initial engineering and designing the facades through to its complex manufacture and installation. A major consideration were the allowances needed for the weight of two glass facade sections hung from Level 8, with only lateral supports holding them in place. Further challenges were met by the facade’s unique design, including the bespoke curvature and oversized glazed sections. Featuring 11 different facade types, the G.James podium facade called for extensive pre-installation planning and a highly experienced glazing team. Structural silicone glazing onsite of approximately 1100 panels was necessary, including many oversized glazed sections incorporating 16 different glass types. All bar one facade required the glass to be a combination of flat, shaped and/or curved panels, with the largest glass panels being six metres high. The largest curved glazed panels are IGUs, 5m high with a 1500mm radius.

10

AGWA DESIGN AWARDS magazine SEPTEMBER ‘19

The thermal performance required called for high-performance glazing throughout. All glass products − including toughened/ heat strengthened, laminated, and IGUs − were sourced by the G.James Group. G.James Facade Solutions also designed and sourced the straight and curved steel support structure for 5 of the 11 podium facades, including the tubular outriggers on the Alumin Green façade and the curved steel transoms to the Broadway elevation. "Our G.James technical, engineering, glass processing and installation teams are to be congratulated for their combined skill, knowledge and remarkable effort," says Lewis Saragossi, Managing Director G.James. "UTS Central was the largest podium project, both in terms of area and contract value, that G.James Facade Solutions have ever undertaken. We’re all exceptionally proud of our work, and to have been associated with such an impressive building."

Advertorial

Grange Glass & Aluminium to shortly take delivery of 2.5 tonne Oktopus lifter Oktopus Australia will shortly commission what they believe to be the largest vacuum lifter to ever hit Australian shores. Manufactured in Germany, the Oktopus GL-MGS 2500 DES vacuum lifter has been purchased by Sydney company Grange Glass & Aluminium (GGA) and has been manufactured to meet the specific requirements for several upcoming projects. With larger glazed sections increasingly being specified for commercial and residential buildings, GGA will be well prepared to meet every challenge put forward by the architectural and engineering profession. GGA have continued to build on their reputation for excelling in the most challenging onsite glazing applications, and since forming in 2010, has steadily built a wide-spread industry reputation for their professionalism and for their superior level of skill and competence. ‘With ever-larger glazed sections now commonly specified, highcapacity lifters are vital,’ says Dom Vullo, CEO of GGA. ‘Featuring the largest lifting capacity seen in this country, our new Germanmanufactured 2.5 tonne Oktopus lifter prepares us for every logistical challenge. This unique machine has been designed so that it can be broken down into smaller vacuum lifters of different capacities, or lifting to a maximum of 2500kg – providing my business with unparalleled flexibility,” noted Dom. ‘As the glazing sections increase in size and weight, so do our challenges, but most importantly I need to ensure our quality of work is unrivalled and my team are safe. Site safety, speed and efficiency is paramount for our business, and our new Oktopus lifter has improved our capability. We are now uniquely equipped to deal with the substantially increased size and weight of glass panels needing to be safely manoeuvred and installed,’ Dom notes. For ease of operation the GL-MGS 2500 DES lifter features a radio remote control and is equipped with fifty suction pads. The suction pad release function is activated by an efficient blow-off system and powered by 24-volt DC batteries, with an integrated battery charger. The Oktopus GL-MGS 2500 DES Vacuum Lifter is precisionengineered and manufactured to lift flat and curved glass, in both convex and concave glazed panels. Recent years have seen the upgrade of the Evolution Window Systems showroom, located in the Western Sydney commercial district of St Mary’s, in close proximity to the M7 motorway connection. The centrepiece of the new showroom is a giant redgum desk, rescued from a fallen tree on a riverbank, which had been stored for many years.

34

AGWA DESIGN AWARDS magazine SEPTEMBER ‘19

Judges Comments: The judges admired the amount of product in this showroom that was displayed without feeling cluttered. The variety of sustainably sourced timbers on show provides the customer with choice of environmentally sound windows and doors. A beautiful showroom.

Interactive media screens on display provide shop drawings, test reports, and a photo library. Storyboards surrounding the showroom showcase the capability, flexibility, quality and craftsmanship of Evolution Window Systems' full product range. The showroom upgrade of this 1960s building includes the installation of increased insulation to roof and wall areas, performance glazing to the shopfront, a 30kW solar system to the roof area, and LED lighting throughout the showroom − all contributing to a 40 per cent reduction in power consumption. Without a shadow of doubt, Evolution Windows Systems ‘walk the talk'. AGWA DESIGN AWARDS magazine SEPTEMBER ‘19

Stan Bond Pty Ltd, manufacturer of Crimsafe Security Screens, also works at the University of SA’s Design and Construct Program. Stan Bond worked with the student team, who were commissioned to upgrade the existing ranger accommodation at Fish River Station NT. Previously only having a floor with no roof or walls, the facility is used by Aboriginal rangers from the Daly River community and is a meeting place for locals.

36

AGWA DESIGN AWARDS magazine SEPTEMBER ‘19

Judges Comments: The ranger accommodation at Fish River Station was rudimentary at best with a roof and floor − but no walls. The installation of walls helped address the extreme climatic conditions an make a more comfortable space.

Increased security from regular intruders was not the primary focus for this installation, which aimed to prevent snakes, dingos and feral buffalo from entering the facility. The Crimsafe system featuring stainless steel was chosen due to its physical durability and minimal ongoing maintenance.

Chalmers Security Installations were recognised for their exceptional security screen installation to a residence in Brookfield, Queensland. The architecturally designed residence is located in an idyllic bushland setting, so ensuring the aspect was free of impediments was a primary consideration for the homeowner.

38

AGWA DESIGN AWARDS magazine SEPTEMBER ‘19

Judges Comments: Set on acreage this home required security, insect screening and fire protection. The judges felt this was met well in an unobtrusive way while keeping the home open and airy.

The interior configuration and layout of the home called for a quality security system to enable it to be opened to natural ventilation without the risk of intruders entering. Personal security was a major consideration for the family, along with protection from insects and bushfire attack, given the rural bush setting. Two of the house's orientations primarily feature glazed door and window areas, demonstrating that natural daylight was equally important.
