Winner
SIA Best Use Of Skylights residential new constriction Atlite Skylights Frankston, Victoria.
This magnificent home has glorious bay views and the client wanted skylights that could creatively enhance the design of the home. Double glazed Atlite Energilites were installed in several custom shaped configurations along the length of the hallway providing abundant natural light, reduction in energy consumption and help this home achieve a five-star energy rating. The combination of shapes and ingenious selection of locations provide definite ‘wow factor’ and contribute to the striking design of this home.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS The judges were impressed by the energy efficiency delivered by the skylights as well as the variety of skylight shapes used in this project that greatly enhanced the overall design aesthetics of the home.

SIA Best Use Of skylights residential existing construction VELUX Australia Glenelg North, South Australia.
This renovation presented several challenges for the architect. The original cottage suffered from a severe lack of light and the location of the structure close to the property boundary both limited the benefit of vertical glazing and required ‘non-combustible’ window products. The solution provided by VELUX achieved energy efficiency through passive ventilation and enhanced the living quality with the incorporation of programmable remotes and rain sensors that enable the skylights to respond quickly to changing weather conditions.

This train station overpass needed to be safe and secure while still allowing for visibility, light transmission and ventilation. Amplimesh SupaScreen was used along the walls of the pedestrian overpass. The screens have created a feeling of openness by allowing free flowing air while providing shade on hot Perth days. The ‘anti-throw’ attribute reduces opportunistic vandalism and ensures the safety of pedestrians both on and beneath the overpass.

AWA best use of windows & doors Residential renovation Creative Windows Hawthorn, Victoria.
This Hawthorn residence has been described as a ‘hidden oasis’. The relaxing retreat was completely redesigned to reposition the entry for practicality. The minimalist windows and discrete design of the modern additions complement the period features of the existing structure. Additionally, custom matte black framing and double glazed low-E glass combine for sophisticated finish.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS The use of hugely oversized windows and door with a minimalistic black matte finish gives expanded views of the garden as well as providing a real openness despite the narrow dimensions of the property. Ventilation and energy efficiency were also accommodated with the use of double hung windows and low-E glass. The judges particularly liked the concealed heads and sills.

Located on the site of an original farmhouse built in the 1800’s, the original stone cottages have been refurbished to function as entry portals flanking the massive solid pivoting door. Upon entering the homestead, the foyer opens up to an open plan living area enclosed by 2.7 metre tall double glazed sliding windows. In summer, they slide in multiple directions to provide cross ventilation and in winter, integration of Schlegel weather seals produce an air tight high performing window and door system.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS The use of sustainably sourced rosewood windows juxtaposed with natural stone certainly impressed the judges. The beauty and superb workmanship exhibited in these windows and doors is complemented by their ability to slide in different directions to ensure natural ventilation.
