EDITOR’S NOTE

ow are you holding up? As this issue goes to print, Metro Manila is under a new classification of restrictions. We here at Autocar hope you’re well, always remember to sanitize, disinfect and constantly wash your hands.

H

In this issue, we take a detailed look at Chinese brand, GAC’s mpv, the GN6. Without giving anything away, Chinese manufacturers make really good vehicles these days, great value and loaded with features. They’ve really done a lot of catching up in the past years and have given mainstream brands a run for their money. In this issue, we also feature GAC’s GS8 mid-sized suv and Changan’s Alsvin subcompact sedan to show you that you have more power to choose than car buyers had a decade ago. The local auto industry is very much alive and kicking with lots

of launches, we look at what was recently launched from Audi, MINI, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, RAM and Toyota. Maybe there’s a vehicle in this lineup you’d want for yourself this Christmas? It’s the end of an era at Lotus, soon the Elise, Exige and Evora will be fond memories, and we give them a proper send off, at the same time, we wonder if their next chapter will live up to high expectations. A lot has been going on in the local auto industry despite the pandemic, and there’s still more to come, so you better fasten your seatbelt as the auto industry still has a lot of surprises for us in the final quarter of this year. If staying home has gotten to you, we feel you, we miss going out on long drives and hitting the road with friends. Lets survive this. Stay safe and be well.

MY WEEK IN CARS Cropley is excited about McLaren’s new 600bhpplus V6 hybrid supercar

MONDAY

We’re just a week away from the unveiling of the all-new hybrid McLaren (don’t worry, we’ll have it here first), but one fact already on the record is that the Artura will have a better, quicker accelerator response than any previous Macca – and probably any other purely petrol supercar. It’s an exciting prospect and entirely appropriate for a company that prides itself, above all, on the purity of its cars’ driving characteristics. That the promised lightning reflexes are entirely down to the car’s electric motor is something that anyone worried about the electrified future should surely see as reassurance.

TUESDAY

I’ve had a few excuses for short drives this week, always in my own cars. Interestingly, having spent many a lockdown evening plotting the replacement of all of them (a disease I can’t shake), I found each more enjoyable than I remembered. This brought me home in a good mood, probably because each experience was a small tribute to the original buying decision. We used our old Citroën Berlingo Multispace to tote Granny to hospital for her first Covid-19 jab; the ride is still lovely and the rattling 2.0-litre diesel engine pulls as much like a tractor as ever. I used our Volkswagen California for a permitted solo supermarket trip (7.5 miles return) and found it even more refined and comfortable than I remembered; the North Coast 500 beckons in better times. The Fiat 500 I used for a dash to a friend’s house for a plumbing emergency (I knew where the stopcock was and she didn’t) and enjoyed the Twinair’s always-surprising long legs and continuing fitness at 88,000 miles. All of which makes me wonder if the rush to dealers when this is over might be smaller than predicted. We’ll be busy enjoying what we have.

We’re half a century from BL’s most successful year ❞ WEDNESDAY

Many intriguing questions surround the approaching staged demise of the Lotus sports car trio (the Elise, Exige and Evora), which are soon to give way to the forthcoming ‘Type 131’. A big one is whether any of these time-honoured names (not to mention Elan, Elite and Esprit, already in the waiting room) will be applied to the next Lotus generation. If it were down to me, a couple of familiar handles would appear with the new model, not least because new names are desperately difficult to find or coin, but mainly because of their irresistible link with the optimism and breakneck technical progress of the Colin Chapman era. My choice would be Elan and Elite but, annoyingly, nobody has asked…

AND ANOTHER THING… I keep coming across pictures in my phone of a Skoda Yeti that’s often parked in a nearby village. I’ve never understood why Skoda, usually so sure-footed, killed a car that was so excellent in size, concept, buyer appeal and name. I know that the underbits had run their race, but new ones were surely available…

Is the Caterham Seven on its last legs? Don’t be daft

THURSDAY

Every day I learn something new and interesting from the Twitter feed of British car lover and expert Andrew Ryan (@thecarfactoids). One recent post that jangled the old nostalgia buds pointed out that we’re exactly half a century from British Leyland’s most successful year, during which the firm built 1.1 million cars (from Minis to Daimler limos) and enjoyed a daily turnover of £4 million (£60m today). Sadly, that year it also launched the crudely engineered Morris Marina to unimpressed volume buyers and soon killed off the decent but ageing Austin 1100/1300 in favour of the spectacularly bad Austin Allegro. The decline began and never stopped.

FRIDAY

The disappearance of the Lotus Elise (see p50) puts me in mind, yet again, of the distilled genius wrapped into an earlier Chapman model that survives and probably always will: the Lotuscum-Caterham Seven. I’ve lived through several eras when ‘the experts’ loudly tipped its demise on the grounds that, after so many decades, great minds must by now have had better ideas. But these minds have produced alternatives (number one: the Ariel Atom), not replacements. Now I’m imagining an electric Seven and betting that it will be a whole new kind of treat.

SMC places first MRT-7 trains on tracks S an Miguel Corporation (SMC) unloaded and installed the first trainset for its Metro Rail Transit – 7 or MRT-7 project in Quezon City last Saturday morning, with the second trainset scheduled to arrive at the project site Sunday morning. The trainsets, which SMC ordered from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, arrived recently at the Manila Port and are the first of six trainsets the company expects to arrive by end of the year. The two train sets, consisting of three cars each, were shipped from Masan Port towards the end of August, were dispatched to the MRT-7 tracks between University Avenue and Tandang Sora, after clearing customs at the Port of Manila. SMC, is the concessionholder for the project and is fully-funding construction

of the 22-kilometer mass transit system that links up with the MRT-3 and LRT-1 and extends from North Avenue in Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. SMC president Ramon S. Ang said that after the first trainset was delivered from the Manila port early Saturday morning, it was immediately set up at the site, with the second batch of train cars to be mounted by 2 am on Sunday,

September 12. “Our engineers and workers assigned to unload the trains have been at the site since early Saturday morning and will be there until the whole process is completed the following day. We have to be very thorough during the whole process to ensure that it is done efficiently and quickly while inspections are continuously being done,” Ang said. The MRT-7 project

is currently at 55.3% completion, despite pandemic restrictions and pending right-ofway issues. Workers have already completed the installation of bored piles, girders, and other foundational works. The MRT-7 aims to reduce travel time from Quezon City to Bulacan to just 35 minutes, a luxury for daily commuters whose usual trips take hours due to traffic congestion and

limited transport options. SMC ordered a total of 36 trainsets or 108 cars from Hyundai ROTEM. The trainsets arrived in Manila last September 6 following extensive inspections and factory acceptance testing. South Korea’s national rail manufacturer, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), served as SMC’s adviser. “South Korea has one of the world’s best railway transport systems and the arrival and eventual use of these trains for the MRT-7 will put our transportation system in NCR and overall infrastructure development, several notches higher,” Ang said. A modern train system, MRT-7 will have electric power systems, computer and communications systems, signaling systems, and automatic fare systems, among others. SEPTEMBER 2021 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 21

Mazda Philippines itself currently employs 5 graduates of the program throughout the company’s operations. “I am extremely proud of our Mazda scholars and I know they are doing well wherever they are now, because of the program,” shares Ramon Buan, Mazda Philippines Parts and Technical Manager. We truly believe that education is essential to break the cycle of poverty, which perfectly describes the background from where these students came from. And by continuing with this valuable partnership, we will also continue to transform the lives of many families.” As the direct supervisor of the program for Mazda Philippines, Buan has been referred to as the scholars’ “father” over the past eight years. “These young men and women will always be a part of our family in Mazda. And they will always be my children,” expresses Buan. Tasked to screen and present applicants for the scholarship program, MFI Polytechnic Institute once again opens its doors to qualified applicants this year as it finalizes the 10 students eligible for the scholarship for 2021. “We are very grateful to Bermaz Auto Philippines, and proud to work in

partnership with them in the 8th year of the program,” says Eduardo Lendio, Placement Associate of MFI Polytechnic Institute. As the key person overseeing the scholarship screening process, Lendio recalls the life-changing effect of being chosen as a Mazda scholar. “In the past years before the pandemic, parents would often shed happy tears when we met them to announce the good news that their child has been selected,” he shares. The BAP Mazda-MFI scholarship program involves academic exposure in the students’ first year. During this time, they are taught the fundamentals of four-stroke engine operation and maintenance. Here they learn to develop communicative, vocational, occupational, and interpersonal skills. They also make use of Mazda Philippines’ donations of component parts such as engines, transmissions and mechanical assemblies to MFI Polytechnic Institute. Scholars of the program also receive theoretical

and actual presentations regarding the brand’s Skyactiv Technology innovations. In the program’s second year, students are assigned to various Mazda Philippines dealerships for them to experience practical application and On-the-Job Training. Upon completion of the two-year course, students are expected to become proficient in repairing and servicing vehicles, assemble automotive systems, troubleshoot both simple and difficult automotive problems, and install vehicular components according to every vehicle’s specifications. The MFI Automotive Technology Course bears National Certification accreditation from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, or TESDA. MFI Polytechnic Institute Inc., also formerly known as the Meralco Foundation, Inc., is a non-stock, non-profit science foundation that has provided quality training and education in

the Philippines for more than 45 years. MFI is committed to see every Filipino pursuing a dignified and gainful way of life. It reaches out to serve in both industry and agricultural sectors. NLEX completes rehabilitation of Bulacan bridges

A

ll lanes are now open at the Meycauayan and Bigaa bridges in Bulacan as the NLEX Corporation recently completed the rehabilitation of both bridges ahead of its original completion schedule. “Despite some restrictions caused by the ongoing pandemic and the challenges brought by inclement weather conditions and doing works in live traffic, we’re happy to announce that works in Meycauayan and Bigaa bridges are now completed ahead of schedule to provide motorists with safer and smoother travel,” said J. Luigi L. Bautista, president and general manager of NLEX Corporation. NLEX has replaced the girders and slabs of the two bridges to strengthen the structures and improve their serviceability as these were built in the 1960s. The 45-meter Meycauayan bridge and 64-meter Bigaa bridge are just some of the essential links within the

expressway that facilitate the efficient movement of people and goods between the North and Metro Manila. As NLEX Corp. places high value on the feedback of its daily commuters, the tollway company and its contractor proactively accelerated and managed the construction so that the project will be finished ahead of its original completion date. Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando expressed delight that the project was promptly finished. “This is a welcome news for all of us as we look forward to a better travel experience. This vital infrastructure is seen to enhance the safety and mobility of our motorists,” he said. “We are pleased that the rehabilitation of Meycauayan bridge is now completed. We thank our private sector partner, NLEX, for doubling its efforts to ensure this early completion for our road users,” said Meycauayan City Mayor Linabelle Villarica. For his part, Bocaue

Mayor Jose Santiago Jr. noted that the completion will further help in the unhampered delivery of goods and transport of authorized persons outside of residence during the community quarantine. “It is impressive that this project was finished ahead of schedule so the public, especially the health workers and economic

frontliners, will have ease of travel,” he said. During the rehabilitation works, NLEX has implemented traffic management measures to alleviate the effect of lane closures on the flow of vehicles. Aside from opening zipper lanes and deploying patrol crews and marshals, it has coordinated with the Department of Public

Works and Highways (DPWH) Region III for the temporary opening of the two-lane service road in Meycauayan which was used as a detour. NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the toll road arm of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).

T

here’s no denying that Chinese brands have gained a foothold in the local market and are here to stay. They have come a long from their first entry into the Philippines a little over a decade ago. Despite a good majority of filipinos purchase choice dictated by budget, we are by nature, a finicky, brand loyal culture, basing our choices on reputation. Often shying away from new brands without so much of a track record, unless a Tito can vouch for the quality of a new brand, we probably won’t give them

the time of day. And that’s one of the biggest obstacles that Chinese brands have to deal with here in the Philippines. So are the motoring media your stand-in Tito who will make that recommendation? Well, if the shoe fits… GAC, which is short for Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. entered the Philippines in 2018 under the exclusive distributorship of Legado Motors, Inc. at a launch graced by the President Duterte and Hollywood movie star Steven Segal. Remember that him?

Well, GAC has your standard line up of models for the different local market categories and we got to try out their Flagship, mid-sized SUV, the GS8.

BIG ON THE OUTSIDE

When you first see the GS8, you’ll probably do a double take on how big it is, perhaps due to how wide it looks compared to it’s mid-sized competitors. GAC stuck to typical SUV proportions and lines, maybe not bothering to “reinvent the wheel” as it were. Looking more

like a full sized SUV with a silhouette similar to that of other Japan ese full sized SUVs, you’ll imagine it’s probably more luxurious inside, and it is. Up front, you’ll see there’s quite an amount of chrome trim, there’s grille, the lip of the bonnet and around the fog lights just enough to give it a luxury/ executive feel. There’s also a brushed aluminium faux bash plate on the underside of the front and rear bumper. You’ll see the prominent LED DRL’s around

SEPTEMBER 2021 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 27

the projector HID Auto headlights with Follow me Home function and alarm for headlights left on. On the side, only the A-pillars are painted with the rest blacked out to the rear to give it it a floating roofline. There’s also chrome trim on the opt and bottoms of the windows and a brushed aluminum roof rail. Around the back, there’s the illusion of a wrap around rear window. And on each side of the tailgate are square LED tail lamps, a rear LED fog lamps and an LED 3rd brake light.

POWERPLANT

Under the hood is a Euro 5 compliant turbocharged 2.0L gasoline engine that puts out 199Hp at 5,200 rpms with 320Nm torque between 1,750 – 4,000 rpms mated to a smooth shifting 6-speed automatic transmission.

INTERIOR

Getting into the GS8 is easy, with the (large) key fob in your pocket, approach the SUV and when you get near, the doors will unlock and the side mirrors will unfold with one beep of the horn. When you step out of the vehicle and walk away, the side mirrors will fold, you’ll hear the

28 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

doors lock and then two beeps of the horn. The interior of the GS8 is luxurious, with leather seats all around and a leather wrapped steering wheel with controls for the entertainment system and cruise control. Both front seats are power adjustable, the second row are 60/40 split and are slide adjustable while the third row are 50/50 split and fold flat. Passenger comfort is assured by its three zone air conditioning, one– touch up and down power windows for all doors and there’s also a power sunroof. The vehicle we tested was fully tinted, but in stock form, it’s equipped with privacy glass or tinted glass from the rear doors all the way to the rear. Interior lights have a small form factor and effectively illuminate their zones.

SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE

The GS8 has front dual airbags, there are also front side airbags, curtain airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all 7 occupants, child safety door locks and ISOfix child seat anchors. It’s also equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hydraulic brake assist, hill-start control (HHC),

FIRST DRIVES

hill-down assist control (HDC), electronic parking brake (EPB) system with auto hold. Standard is the Theft Deterrent system, Engine Immobilizer, Reverse Camera, 8 front and rear parking sensors and crash automatic unlock.

WHAT WE THINK

After having checked the GS8’s measurements, at 1910mm, it is wider than other mid-sized SUV’s which average about 1850mm and that explains it’s roominess. It’s ride is more comfortable than most of it’s competitors as I mentioned earlier, as it feels and rides like a full sized SUV. Interesting, it has an ECO drive mode which stifles throttle response aiding you in being more fuel efficient and also makes for

smoother acceleration from a full stop, but when you gun the gas, this seems to get over ridden. There are also different terrain modes too, but you’ll probably not need this feature here in the Philippines. Having driven in the city and out of town, we found ECO or Normal mode won’t leave you wanting. The GS8 GE 4X2 Premiere is the entry level variant priced at PHP 1,780,000. Compared to similarly priced variants of its competitors, it turns out the GS8 might be a good choice as it’s better appointed and has a better ride. Don’t take my word for it, go and sit in one and take it for a test drive, do the same with it’s competitors and see for yourself. The GS8 makes a good case for itself, and is a good

value proposition. Since GAC and the GS8 is new in the market, and you don’t have a Tito to recommend it, we suggest you take a hard look and think about what you’ll get for your P1.8M between the GS8 and other brands. NEIL PAGULAYAN

on’t get caught up with the name, it will grow on you by the time you’re done reading this. The Alsvin, may seem a little foreign to pronounce, and we won’t get into what the name means, you’ll be more interested in what this sub-compact from Changan has to offer. It’s also their only locally available model with a name, their other offerings have letter and number combinations to in place of model names.

30 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

If you’re in the market for a car in this category, perhaps a first time car buyer? You’ll probably be looking at price, and what features you’ll get. There’s always a trade off, features for price, your main consideration is getting from point A to B, in the most cost effectively comfortable way. We got our hands on the top of the line Platinum variant. We were surprised at it’s features for it’s price.

EXTERIOR The Alsvin is your typical subcompact sedan, its measurements are not far off from the best selling subcompact sedan it’s up against. The front end’s design seems a little visually busy with a lot of lines, but starts off pretty well with Changan’s Butterfly Wing Radiator Grille design which is carried over from their other models. Its got halogen projector head lamps which

adjust up and down, and only the Platinum variant has Daytime Running Lights on the bottom corners of the sculpted bumper. The sides have a line emanating from the headlights but not quite making all the way to the rear, but does bring attention to the line that comes forward from the brake lights. There’s also a line that slopes up from the front wheel to the rear wheel and up the rear bumper.

with controls on the racing style flat bottomed steering wheel. The driver seat is 6-way manually adjustable, you get an armrest and storage on the center console. Doors have power locks and side mirrors are power adjustable. It’s also equipped with Cruise Control. Safety features are dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill Hold Control (HHC), reverse camera with auxiliary lines, right side blind spot view camera and monitor, reverse parking sensor, Tire Pressure Monitoring System

(TPMS), Child Safety Lock and Seatbelt reminder. The Alsvin performs as well as can be expect for a vehicle in this category, but the Platinum priced at Php679,000 is definitely great value with all it’s features usually found in more expensive, higher end brands at the entry level price bracket of locally established brands. Chinese brands have a come a long way in the last decade, and to stay competitive in the world market have been able to up their standards and build quality. For your peace of mind, Changan Motor Philippines offer 5-year, 150,000-kilometer

warranty and free Preventive Maintenance Services (PMS) for the first year, or up to 20,000 kilometers. The Alsvin wasn’t a trade off of features for price after all.

GAC GN6 LUXURY MPV

32 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

T

hese days, there’s a Chinese brand with a model in pretty much all the categories of vehicle types sold here in the Philippines. Next to the SUV, the MPV is a popular category, seating about seven and offering a relatively comfortable ride, and available in modest to luxurious trim. China brand GAC recently launched their GN6, an elegant looking MPV, resembling more of a luxury mini-van than a mass people mover.

SEPTEMBER 2021 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 33

EXTERIOR

The GN6 has a similar physical profile to just about all MPV’s on the road. Up front, the Flying Dynamics design blends with the logo front and center and with this, the daytime running lights integrate themselves into the grille design. There are a good mix of just enough chrome and black. At the rear, there’s the LED taillights which when all are lit spans the width of the vehicle, and a 3rd brake light strip at the top of the spoiler above the rear hatch. The GN6 rolls on Maxxis 215/60’s mounted on 16” alloy wheels.

34 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

POWERTRAIN

The GN6 is powered by a Euro 5 compliant, turbocharged 1.5 Liter gasoline engine which puts out 170Hp at 5000rpm with 265Nm of torque at 4000rpm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine and transmission is manufactured by Aisin and uses Bosch fuel injectors.

INTERIOR

The GN6 boasts of a spacious interior, providing a comfortable ride for seven adults. Luxurious leather seats welcome you as you enter the cabin without needing to remove the key fob from your

pocket. Starting the engine is easy with the engine push start button. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable with controls for cruise control and the

The second row is a pair of comfortable captains chairs with armrests and 7.5 inch space between, for ease of ingress and egress of third row passengers. The third row seats three passengers. With the third row deployed, there’s 324 liters of luggage space, which increases to 1100 liters when the third row folds flat, out of the way, into the floor. To complete the experience, GAC’s 360-degree Quiet Car technology helps cancel out ambient noise.

SEPTEMBER 2021 AUTOCAR.COM.PH 37

IMPRESSIONS

The GN6 is a step above your typical MPV, with a more upscale feel which you not only see, but feel. The interior fit and finish is up to par with mainstream brands and their use of different materials, soft touch, brushed aluminum and piano black along with brown leather for seats and other interior accents set it apart. Connecting to the entertainment system is easy via Bluetooth, it did lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which would have been a plus, but not a deal breaker. The sunroof is a nice touch too! For a large vehicle, it was relatively easy to drive, the electric power steering is light enough for easy maneuvering at slow speeds in tight spaces or parking but with enough heft not to be too light at higher speeds. The ride is comfortable but not too soft, and as expected, there’s some body roll when making tight turns but it’s well composed in both city and on the open road. 38 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

These options adjust the engine response and gearshift parameters in concert with ESP and ABS. We didn’t see the need to switch out of ECO mode during our daily drives. If you’re in the market for an MPV or even perhaps a mini-van, the GN6 has quite a lot to offer. At Php 1,350,000.00, it slots in at the price range of mid variants of mainstream brands, but with top of the line features. to represent the Philippines in this competition and to be the only Asian driver selected is an added bonus, but also adds a bit of pressure to represent the Asia region against the global field. I will continue to train hard leading up to the event and do my best in France!” said Bustamante. Started racing go-karts at the young age of 5, Bianca Bustamante has since established herself as a rising racing driver having multiple karting championships across Asia. Now ready to take her racing career to the next level, Bustamante is aiming for her professional Formula racing debut. Here are some of Bianca’s notable achievements in kart racing: • 4-time Winner of the

China Grand Prix Kart Scholarship (2018-2019) • 3-time Macau International Kart GP Champion (2014, 2018, 2019) • 2-time Junior Asian Karting Open Championship – Overall Champion (2018, 2019) • 3-time Philippines Driver of the Year – Karting (2018, 2019, 2020) • Philippines National Junior Karter of the Year (2018) The youth motorsport program is spearheaded by the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission to encourage more young women in motorsport. The scholarship was organized by FIA in partnership with Scuderia Ferrari’s own racing driver development arm, Ferrari Driver

Academy (FDA), which has produced talented F1 drivers in the form of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, and Haas’ Mick Schumacher among others. The shoot-out will be held at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France on October 21 to 23, 2021 and will serve as the participants’ first challenge. Bustamante

and 13 others will undergo a series of race tests in the 3-day shoot-out. Eight of the best performing drivers will be selected to attend FIA training camps. The final test will be in Fiorano, Italy where participants will drive Formula 4 race cars. The winner will be granted a full race scholarship at the FDA.

HERE WE GO AGAIN uly served as a fruitful month for us at the Philippine Rallycross Series. We finally had our series running after a year of being halted due to the dreaded Coronavirus. That specific round had been crucial for us organizers as it served as a trial run of the new queuing system that we implemented. To share with you, PHRX has been organizing dirt time trial races since 2015 with the aim of reviving rally racing in the country which was dearly loved by Pinoy motorsports decades ago. Since then, the number of participants has been continuously growing. From 10 people when we started back in 2015, we normally have around 70 entries per round now. The biggest surge in the number of participants was seen in 2018. The team has been very grateful that the sport is finally gaining support and following once again. But we will not deny that the sudden influx of participants caught us off guard. Since then, we have been trying different approaches to the event to make the schedule better. The most successful one we had was in the recent round last July. The organizers and the participants were very pleased with how everything turned out. The day-race was done around 4pm (there was a time in one of our races when we were

J

racing the day stage until 10:00pm). Delighted that we finally did well in terms of organizing the schedule, we were supposed to have the following round in the first week of August, but the number of COVID-19 cases surged just then. Though most PHRX races are done outside the metro and the Clark Global City, the current track of PHRX allows races with strict observance of social distancing, limited number of participants, and minimum health protocols, the team opted to postpone the next round until the number of daily cases lowers, at least. Right now, there is no better thing to do but to keep safe at home and stay healthy. Yes, we might be missing the adrenaline rush right now, but would rather have a complete PHRX family in the track once the cases become manageable. We have a lot planned for the 2020 season of PHRX that we are hoping that could be done this 2021. We also wanted to host a full rally race complete with special stages again after the rallycross season but with the current COVID-19 trend, it’s likely to park those plans once more. Hopefully, things will be better very soon and we can race on dirt again.

NORFOLK HERO’S LAST The 1996 Elise embodied ever ythi ng that made us all fal l in love with Lotus. A quarter of a cent ur y later, its time is up – but not for the usua l reason of decli ning ability, says Andrew Fran kel

PHOTOGRA PH Y JOR DA N BU TT

ow extraordinary is it that these two little sports cars, one pretty and delicate, the other more pugnacious and purposeful, span a third of the entire production history of Lotus Cars? It’s extraordinary for me, because I remember the beginning so well: a secret road trip right at the start of 1996 (it might even have been the end of 1995) with a talented young chassis developer called Matt Becker (now

H

chief engineer of vehicle attribute engineering at Aston Martin) and an amazing new Lotus. It’s also extraordinary because if you look at Lotus 25 years before the Elise was born, you will find that its model range included the original Elan and Europa, which feel like ancient history. And 25 years before that, Lotus didn’t exist. So there was only ever going to be one place to drive them: the Hethel test track on which both

were developed, outside the factory in which both were built. But what, exactly, do we have here? The blue Elise is one of the last: a run-out special called the Sport 240 Final Edition. These days there’s no such thing as an entry-level Elise, the normally aspirated 1.6-litre car having been discontinued in 2018. There are just two: the Sport 220, costing £41,496, and the track-dayoriented Cup 250 for £49,595. That sounds a lot, considering the

first Elise went on sale in 1996 for £18,950, but not when you consider the additional 100bhp of even the Sport 220 and the fact that £18,950 back then is roughly £37,000 today. The Sport 240 is priced at £45,500 and production is limited only by the number of people who order one before the autumn, when, as we’ve already reported, the Elise and its Exige and Evora siblings will die to make way for a new sports car known today only as the Type 131. à

Oversteer, understeer, neutral… in the wet, S1 will do whatever you ask

As its name suggests, this latest and last Elise offers 240bhp from its supercharged 1.8-litre Toyota engine, which is essentially double that of the S1 Elise parked next to it, whose naturally aspirated Rover engine is just 2cc smaller. Of course, there were far more powerful K-series S1 and S2 Elises, but we wanted the bookends for this story, which meant a car that was early, standard and original, right down to its unique metal-matrix-composite (MMC) disc brakes (of which more in a minute). There are all sorts of options you can add on your Sport 240 to hoist its price northwards, but the standard proposition comprises not only that 23bhp hike from the Elise 220 but also ultra-light, forged, 10-spoke alloy wheels; a new TFT instrument display; and a new steering wheel. There are, of course, Final Edition plaques scattered around and bespoke colours, but otherwise and in mechanical terms, the car is standard. Commensurate upgrades to the Exige are available too. The S1 Elise now looks from another era. The shape conceived for it by Julian Thomson is more rounded, cleaner and has elements of the Ferrari Dino 246GT, whose owners include none other than, er, Julian Thomson. The S3 shape has a stack more presence and looks modern enough to be brand new, even though it differs little to the S2 shape that was launched 20 years ago. It’s what’s called timeless design. I can’t decide which I prefer because (to me, at least, and for entirely different reasons) both are gorgeous. I drive the old car first. I’m not sure why; perhaps because it has been a couple of decades and I’m itching to find out whether the feel of the thing is as I remember it to be. Happily, the car is cosmetically excellent and mechanically perfect, so there’s no trying to second-guess what it might have felt like when new. Best of all (and save a sports exhaust that adds no power and slightly later Bilstein dampers in place of the original Koni set), it’s absolutely factory standard. Just as it was the day it first poked its prow out of this place in early 1998.

E L I S E M E M O RY My most enjoyable Elise moments came in 2007, while I was campaigning my first of two S1s in sprints and hillclimbs. This accessible level of motorsport provides a great reason for father and son to spend a whole day together. We doubledrove and at times were 0.1sec apart. It was just a stock 1.8, but it went well enough to be a challenge and reacted well to some handling mods. It was also completely reliable and comfy on journeys to and from tracks – a vital point. And we sold it for the £11,000 we paid. SC

Joy of the Rovers: K-series is a sublime fit

Elise has used Toyota engines since 2005

HOW TO BUY A USED ELISE You need to be careful when buying a used Elise, because so many have had hard lives but can look better than they are, due to their aluminium chassis and glassfibre bodies. Most importantly, look for accident damage. Plenty have been crashed and repairs are expensive and difficult, which makes some inclined to bodge. The early K-series Rover engines aren’t as strong as their Toyota replacements but are actually quite reliable if maintained properly. However, head gasket failure is common, so look for oil in the water, often signalled by an emulsion under the radiator cap. It’s crucial to ensure that the suspension is straight, uncorroded and correct in spec. If not, it at best won’t drive as an Elise should. So it’s worth it even more than usual to get the right car with a complete history of fastidious owners. It may cost more at the outset but, in the long run, these are likely to be the best-value Elises to own and the most fun to drive.

Rarely does Frankel not appear satisfied when driving an Elise

LOTUS ELISE FAREWELL THE BEST ELISES There have been more than 50 Elises if you include track cars, race cars, special editions and relations such as the 340R, 2-Eleven and Vauxhall VX220 – and that’s before you add all the Exiges. Here’s our pick of the mainstream versions.

1996 S1 £18,000 The original and still a real bargain to this day. Just remember that only the very early cars had those MMC brakes, because the supplier was unable to meet the demand.

The stack instrument display with digital readouts in the S1 Elise felt state of the art in 1996. It doesn’t any more…

It’s an easy car to fall into and comfortable once you’re there. The driving position and pedal arrangement are near perfect, too. But there are certain aspects to it that wouldn’t be acceptable today: it’s extremely difficult to depart on a wet day because the footwells are so slippery and not even the most seasoned professional could erect its roof in a rainstorm without ending up as wet as if they had just lain in the bath. I’m itching to get out there, and so is the little Lotus. With those genius MMC brakes, which work on the principle of adherent rather than abrasive friction and therefore last almost forever, swapping material from pad to disc and back again,

it weighs just 725kg, making it more than 20% lighter than the Sport 240. The K-series starts with that enthusiastic bark of old, the gearlever slots into place with the same old slightly imprecise action and we’re off. At once it seems quick, crisp, eager and together. Even before we’re up to speed, the steering is writhing gently in my hands, flooding my fingers with information and my brain with the happiest of memories. The track is flooded too, but that appears to deter the Elise not at all. It still feels quick enough, pleasant and purposeful performance spread across a surprisingly wide rev band. Lotuses have never been about straight-line speed anyway, their

❝ This chassis offers ultra-high definition in an increasingly low-resolution world ❞ powertrains perpetually cast in supporting roles to their chassis, and this one is more than adequate. But that chassis… oh my goodness. It communicates with its own kind of hyper-reality. In terms of the way it feels, it offers ultra-high definition in an increasingly low-resolution world. You think and then it acts instantly, accurately and without question. It doesn’t really have a handling balance, because you can make it do anything you like: steady-state understeer, exquisite wheel-twitching neutrality or sideways as Mk2 Ford Escort on gravel: the choice is yours. Rotten weather obviously helps you skid about in a not very powerful, mid-engined car without a limitedslip differential because the one à

1999 S1 111S £22,000 Fitted with a more powerful (143bhp) version of the Rover K-series engine with variable valve timing and a close-ratio gearbox. A bit quicker but no less pure.

2005 S2 111R £23,000 Among the first Elises to feature the super-strong Toyota engine, tuned to give 189bhp. Properly powerful with appropriately scintillating performance.

2010 S3 1.6 £24,000 The lightest and most affordable of the modern mainstream Elises and, for those who don’t need enormous straight-line pace, a really delightful choice.

2018 S3 CU P 250 £39,000 The most hardcore and powerful of the mainstream Elises, designed to satisfy the track-day market and fitted with stiff suspension and aerodynamic addenda.

Design has retained basic concept while being subtly updated

WILL THE ELISE E V E R R E T U R N? The Elise will probably return one day. The problem with such a car from a business perspective is that it offers the worst of both worlds: low volumes and low profit margins. An even bigger problem is how you create an electric Elise that people will want to buy. Tesla tried it and it didn’t work out too well. But a few years from now, when Lotus is on a sound financial footing and its rivals are electric too, things might look very different. Almost all of the best Lotuses have been small, simple and light, and that’s a heritage Hethel forgets at its peril.

E LI S E M E M O RY I’m unsure which variant I was driving, but I recall that it was a light, warm evening and near the HertfordshireCambridgeshire border. I had driven home from the office and gone for a good test drive. It was my first time in an Elise, and I had never felt steering so good, with so much accuracy and feel but so little unwanted feedback. I owned a Caterham, but this was different. There was also the astonishing ride: pliant yet brilliantly controlled. Suddenly I knew what everyone had been going on about. MP

50 AUTOCAR.COM.PH SEPTEMBER 2021

ßthing that it doesn’t want to do is drift, but even here there are options. Nail the throttle and it will fruitlessly spin the power away, but coax it rather than goad it, feed it measured, gentle stabs of torque, and then you will see this old Elise at its acrobatic, balletic and brilliant best. The Sport 240 is a more serious proposition. It feels far more solid and better put together (because it is) and wildly easier to live with. Indeed, this latter aspect may not be spoken about much, but it’s probably the area in which the Elise has evolved most over the years and is most responsible for its unusual longevity. It’s fast, too, spinning its wheels, skipping over the puddles and instantly giving me far more to think about than the old car. But I love this

The new TFT powertrain. Or perhaps screen in the Sport it would be more 240 works really well. accurate to say I love Expect to see variants the application of this thereof in the Lotus powertrain in this car. cars of the future. It feels as appropriate to an early-21st-century Lotus as did the K-series to one from the late 20th century. And its behaviour? It still leaves the shots for you to call. Unlike its grandfather, this Elise has safety systems that I could leave on, but what would be the point of that? There’s steady, stabilising understeer in the quick stuff, as you would hope; but in the Sport 240, there’s the power to cancel it towards the apex. If there’s a downside, it’s that the back moves more rapidly in slower turns, requiring just a little more

Modern car is a lot faster but pretty much just as fun

E L I S E M E M O RY My best Elise moment doesn’t even involve me driving it. It was for one of those ride-along stories we do from time to time. This one must have been at the end of 1995 or the start of 1996 (we ran the story in the 10 January issue), when I met a young chassis developer called Matt Becker (now the car development boss at Aston Martin) and went for a ride in the little Lotus. Even from the passenger seat, I could tell this was the Lotus we had been waiting for: light and lithe, simple yet advanced. It felt like a game-changer – and for once I was right. AF

Elise’s interior has become much nicer, comfier and better built over the past 25 years care and precision to collect. But this is minutiae, really: neither car felt for a moment like it might continue to rotate when instructed otherwise. Interestingly, that’s one thing Elises did do in the early days, resulting in plenty of unplanned interactions with the scenery, and I suspect that’s why this car now sports those Bilstein dampers. So which is the better driving machine (or, indeed, the better Lotus, because those are one and the same)? The older car is more surprising, just to see how capable it remains even after a quarter of a century. It feels more delicate and agile, too, and for that you can thank the 206kg difference in their kerb weights. But the Sport 240 is a wildly easier car with which to live, obviously offers a completely different level of performance and loses remarkably little in terms of the purity of feel that is the hallmark of all great Lotuses. I could extemporise further on their relative merits, but I would only conclude what you already know: cars this far apart in age aren’t strictly comparable. The S1 would be the one I would take to the pub and

Price On sale Engine Power Torque Gearbox Kerb weight 0-62mph Top speed Economy CO2, tax band

the Sport 240 the one I would choose for any kind of decent journey. One more lap? In the wet, the S1; in the dry, the Sport 240. It’s that close. What’s more important, at least to me, is that they still feel closely related – one a direct development of the other. For what this means is that the character of the Elise has survived from first to last. This isn’t a given: other great names are very different propositions today compared with what they first were, not just in terms of capability but also, more importantly, character. You only have to look at the BMW M3 to know it. Lotus has done a fine job preserving so much of what made the Elise such a transformative product. Just be in no doubt that that will be a walk in the park compared with the job of preserving it for another, but increasingly electrified, generation. But that’s another conversation for another time. For now, I would just like to salute the Elise and all those who kept it so good for so long. Make no mistake: when someone writes the final history of Lotus, it will be up there with the original Elite and Elan among the truest icons of the brand. L
