The Avalon Middle School FFA Chapter in Orlando, Florida has been awarded $4657.00 as a part of the Grants for Growing program. The nationwide program, sponsored by Tractor Supply company, provides grant funds to local FFA chapters to support the development or improvement of agricultural education projects that enhance the classroom experiences for students through chapter engagement activities. Avalon Middle School FFA plans to expand the poultry science program at the school, by purchasing and building additional coops and cages for the poultry section of the land lab. This will enable the program to expand their laying flock of hens, and provide additional opportunities for student purebred poultry projects. The additional coop space and bird capacity will ensure that more students will have access to poultry for hands-on learning of poultry science, and will provide a sustainable income through the local farmer’s markets.
The Grants for Growing program provided approximately $548,000 to 165 FFA chapters in 47 states just this year. Funding is provided through consumer donations made during checkout at a Tractor Supply Company store by purchasing a $1 FFA Paper Emblem. The fundraising period aligns with National FFA Week in February. The National FFA Organization provides leadership, person growth and career success training through agricultural education to more than 700,000 student members who belong to one of the more than 8,600 local FFA chapters through the U.W. and Puerto Rico. The organization is also supported by more than 8 million alumni and supporters throughout the U.S.

Coffee Hour with BEAT solution is one that is our go-to for most business challenges: A Partnership. Avalon Park Group partnered with OCPS to accelerate the timeline of the Avalon Park schools, we donated land, built, and financed four of the Avalon-area schools and kicked in the money needed for the Timber Creek High School football stadium and marching field for the band.
Now that we had the schools, the question became how do we make them the best? A key moment for me was when I met Pam Sanders. Pam was the principal who led Avalon Elementary school for 14 years and while there, achieved Blue Ribbon School status, which identifies the school as one of the top 300 schools in the United States. My question to her was, “How can we become the best school in central Florida?” My expectation was to Her answer, “That is easy, hear, 2 golf courses, a wawe need the best teachers.” ter park or some other Pam came up with a great outstanding amenities. idea, which in part is the Having no children of my reason Avalon Elementary own at that time, I was became such a great school. surprised to hear their She told me, “Beat teachers unanimous response was are among the least travnew, good schools! The More than 20 years ago when planning Avalon Park Orlando from scratch, I invited about 20 area REALTORS to the Citrus Club in Orlando. At that time Avalon Park was in the middle of nowhere, at the end of a dead-end, 2-lane road, and the only residents were cows. My question to these REALTORS was: What would make you bring homebuyers to Avalon Park?
Even today I get Christmas cards from teachers still at Avalon Elementary telling me how much they learned by seeing the world and gaining experience by dialoguing with educators all over the world. Avalon Park was the fastest selling community in central Florida for four years in a row, sold over 600 homes in 2006 and now in 2021 is 99% built out. This was not because of our location, but because of our approach of live, learn, work and play. Quite often people want to know what is the one reason that made Avalon Park so successful. My response is that there are over a hundred reasons, and all of them have roots in great partnerships with the community. However, if I get pressed to come up with one reason, it would be the schools and our partnerships with them. I am not political when it comes to schools. I believe that public schools, charter schools, and private schools are all important and can be successful as long as they are passionate and dedicated to education. Avalon Park Group supports and works with them all. As a matter of fact, I believe in choices. All Avalon Park public schools are outstanding, and with the addition of the Avalon Pinecrest charter school, private schools
like Creative Global Schools, and multiple preschools, the residents have choices for their children’s education. I like this a lot. I have always viewed schools as the center of any community. The relationships and interactions between the schools and the community are a key element for both of their successes. For instance, I love when school children come to Encore Assisted Living community, they truly are a blessing to the seniors in our community. Another example of this type of relationship is the community service performed by local students at community events and service projects. Long before Avalon Park had any amenities constructed, we were able to get creative with our relationship with Timber Creek High School by creating a Co-Use Agreement. This agreement allowed the community members to use features like the school gym and media center in exchange for financing of the football stadium. The interactions go on and on and continue to make us smile. We are proud of our schools and the students, staff and families they represent! We wish you all success as we kick-off another school year. Welcome Back to School!

What is Respite Care for Seniors?
Caring for an aging parent, elderly relative, or loved one with a debilitating illness or injury can be a challenging responsibility. Over time, it can take quite a toll on primary caregivers who selflessly sacrifice their time in service of another. In order to continue providing quality care, full-time caregivers must take time for themselves to get away, go on vacation, or just focus on themselves. Because of this, many adult healthcare facilities are offering respite care for seniors.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Programs
We are excited to officially open on August 2nd! I wanted to take the time to explain the Jiu-Jitsu programs we will be offering. Gracie Combatives (14 years old and up) is our beginner program for adults. In this program, you will learn the 36 core techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a fun, safe, and cooperative environment. Each one-hour lesson addresses one standing and one ground self-defense technique, which are further broken down into simplified drills or “slices” to facilitate the learning process. You can start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous experience and, since safety is our number one concern, there is no competitive sparring in this program. Upon successful completion of the Gracie Combatives program you will earn your Gracie Combatives Belt which will qualify you for advancement into the Master Cycle program.
Little Champs (4-7 Years Old) The Little Champs program is for kids 4-7 years old. Using our time-tested “Gracie Games,” we teach the Little Champs basic self-defense techniques while instilling the foundational principles of leverage and control. The secret to the success of this program is that we make the lessons so fun that the kids beg for more! Once a child masters all ten Gracie Games, they advance to the Jr. Grapplers program. Jr. Grapplers (8-12 Years Old) In the Jr. Grapplers program, we focus on 33 non-violent self-defense techniques that teach children to “neutralize and negotiate” with the bullies. Verbal assertiveness strategies are a major portion of this curriculum. A child needs absolutely no experience to start, and we guarantee a noticeable increase in your child’s confidence within a few weeks!
10-Day Free Trial at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Orlando! Most BJJ schools limit new students to one free trial class. We offer new students a 10-day riskfree trial that includes a free uniform and unlimited access to all of our beginner group classes. We’re confident that the curriculum, the camaraderie, and quality of the instruction will exceed all your expectations. If that’s not the case, just let us know, and we will never charge you a penny (all we ask is that you return the free uniform that we provide you). To take advantage of our 10-day free trial, simply contact the Certified Training Center nearest you, and we’ll schedule your first class today! In the month of August, we will be running a Grand Opening membership special! Please contact us at james.bejer@gjjorlando.com, call us at 407-990-2907, or stop by.

Healthy Eating During the Summer Months • Don’t focus only on the numbers and make it all about counting calories or grams of fat.
Going into a new year with goals is great, and setting goals around your health and well-being is even better. Yet while some of us promise ourselves in January that we’ll eat healthier, by the time we reach the summer months, we might find that we’ve fallen back into old routines. Keep in mind, though, it’s never too late to restart your resolution, or even add in new healthier habits! Getting started is easier than you think— going into it with the right mindset is half the battle. Do’s and Don’ts of Eating Healthier Here’s what you should focus on... • Do make your favorite veggie and fruits a go to food for snacking • Do eat grains specifically whole ones. • Do eat fat from healthy sources like nuts, seeds, and flavorful oils. • Do protein in the form of lean meats, chicken, legumes, beans, and even eggs. • Do dairy the low-fat kind that include milk, cheese and yogurt. • Do frozen if you can’t find fresh veggies and fruits, avoid those that include sauces or added sugars. Try to avoid letting these things happen... • Don’t go it alone. Make sure you have a support network of friends and family that know you are working to change your eating patterns. • Don’t deprive yourself of the foods you like or want—that just sets you up to go backwards. It’s okay to eat it and move on.
Start Small and Stay Efficient Start small by setting a goal of cooking once or twice a week, and choose simple recipes that include ingredients you like! Remember: baking, grilling, and pan sautéing are easy ways to cut out fat and calories that come from deep-fried foods from the drive-thru. If you’re running short on time, use a crockpot or cook up some food over the weekend so all you have to do is reheat and serve when you want it. Make it Fun Try being adventurous with a new vegetable or a different type of fish that’s fresh in the summer. Visit our website for some great options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks, and even beverages! Need some quick inspiration? Try these ideas for refreshing summer eats. • Make your own trail mix with your favorite nuts, seeds, and dried fruits • Choose oil-based dressings for your salad instead of creamy or fat free dressings • Add canned salmon, tuna or even sardines to your salad or crackers. The goal is 2 or more servings of fatty fish per week • Add ground flaxseed to hot or cold cereal, yogurt, bread, pancakes, or baked goods.
into smoothies, incorporating them into salads, or adding them into your morning breakfast routine. • Water content: 91% • Strawberries nourish your body with fiber, disease-fighting antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. • They may reduce inflammation, which can help protect against some chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
them in a summer salad made with tomatoes and green onions, or mixed them in with cottage cheese. • Water content: 95%. • Made up mostly of water, they provide a small amount of some nutrients such as vitamin K, potassium, and magnesium. • Cucumbers are only 8 calories per half-cup serving, making them ideal to eat without adding a significant number of calories.
Peaches Besides adding them to smoothies and salads, they also make a great addition to yogurt. Try grilling them for an awesome dessert! • Water content: 89% • They’re nutrient-dense with vitamins A, B, and C as well as fiber and potassium. • Peaches eaten with the skin on may also help you absorb more disease-fighting antioxidants.
As always, it can’t be emphasized enough that total health is a balance between good nutrition and exercise! Stop by your local YMCA for a group exercise class like Zumba or beat the summer heat in one of our pools. If you can’t make it to the Y, even a brisk walk around the block a few times a week can help you stay healthier and inspire you to eat right and stay on track. Making these small changes over time can lead to big results. Cheers to a happy and healthy summer!
Cucumber Commonly added to salads and sandwiches, they can also be included in cooked dishes like stirfries and soups. Try including
Stay Hydrated While getting your daily servings of water can oftentimes seem like a chore, it’s important to remember that you have to drink or eat your water even if you don’t feel thirsty. While “eating” your water is no substitute for drinking it, it can help you to replenish your bodily fluids in a way that might be a bit more enjoyable. Strawberries It’s easy to include strawberries in your diet by blending them

Back-to-School Mental Health Wellness
It comes as no surprise to anyone that dealing with the ups and downs of pandemic-era schooling, parents and children both are anxious and concerned about returning to school. Most families have barely recovered from this past year of lock downs, virtual learning, mask regulations, job challenges, isolation and Covid 19, and we are again on the brink of another uncertain school year.
The fall out of this past year has been difficult for most of us, and most people would agree that the mental health challenges are significant. Mental Health Clinicians are seeing an increase number of elevated levels of anxiety, panic, depression and suicidality among adolescents and teens.
they do not always feel free to share their feelings with their parents because they observe that their parents are already stressed out and they do not want to make it worse. If teens cannot open up and talk about their feelings with their parents, they will reach out and find support somewhere else. I suggest a weekly or biweekly family meeting to reset, and for parents to share their feelings openly and honestly with their children; to model open and honest conversation. Regular family meetings can create a very supportive family environment which will aide in good mental and emotional health.

months with depression and anxiety on the rise in adolescents and teens, I began to ask my clients what they thought most contributed to their depression and anxiety and almost 100% stated that it was social media. I was not surprised though it did surprise me that these teens were so honest. Children need and even long for appropriate boundaries around the things that will protect them. Parents need to take the issue of social media and technology freedoms seriously and come up with a plan that works for your family. Limiting access to potential harmful sites and the drama that they create is of utmost importance for our children’s emotional well being and mental health wellness.
Create a good nutrition plan According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, children who eat a complete breakfast have been shown to work faster, make fewer mistakes and show improved focus, alertness, comprehension and memory. Many teen-agers are not ready to eat so early in the morning, but parents can still plan well to provide the kinds of healthy snacks they can take with them to school to eat when they are hungry. I have found that as a parent, if I planned well for meals, I would execute well. Otherwise, it was grab and go and fast food, which is not sustainable for children. Much of mental health wellness is found in the
daily habits we set for our children.
Encourage solid friendships and activity Isolation and lack of activity have been problematic for all of us during this past pandemic year, with many children tentative and anxious about reconnecting with friends and activities. It is imperative to our children’s mental health to cultivate face-to-face contact in friendships and be involved in the comradery of sports and activities. It is in the context of real relationships that our children grow in self esteem, self confidence and feel a sense of belonging and purpose. Parents need to support and encourage this more that ever as children may protest out of fear and anxiety. Let’s be proactive this year to attend not only to our children’s physical health and well-being, but also to their emotional and mental health. For the parents, I encourage you to pay attention, look for signs, engage in good conversations and if you or anyone in your family needs help with their mental health, please reach out to a doctor or therapist. Wellness with Jen: Sunscreen... Does Protection from the Sun Mean Risking our Health? Have you seen the recent recalls on sunscreens?
-️ Leaves skin feeling soft, not sticky - Smells amazing
Neutrogena and Aveeno have pulled many of their sunscreens off store shelves because they contain benzene, a known cancer-causing agent. Other sunscreens and after-sun products, though, that remain on shelves in stores have been found to contain benzene and other cancer-causing agents.
Admittedly, I forgot to reapply throughout the day as I should have <-- #badmom I know! I DO NOT recommend following my poor example, but I wanted to share that despite being a bad Momma and not reapplying, the babes didn’t burn. One application protected them against burning, thank goodness!
So, let me get this straight.... We’re supposed to apply products that can potentially cause cancer in order to avoid cancer?? We apply sunscreen to protect us from the damage of the sun, but at what cost?
You have options! You do not have to choose between harmful sun exposure and harmful exposure to toxins. Our recipe:
Why can’t we have the best of both worlds? Why can’t we use a safe product that effectively protects us from the sun?! Oh, wait, we can! A couple of years ago, a company that I trust whole-heartedly developed a sunscreen that contains only healthy ingredients and is super effective. WIN WIN, right? Well, kind of... It’s super thick and kind of annoying to apply. And some folks would feel as though it’s a bit pricey. Before going on vacation last week, my daughter and I tried out a hack for making our sunscreen easier to apply and more cost effective. After a week of hours in the sun each day, I’m here to say that it kept us all protected! - Easy to apply - Protects my pale Canadian born Momma skin - Protects my 5 year old during hours of pool play - Protects my 16 month old beach bum

5. Put it on paper or keep a diary Writing down your thoughts helps get them out of your head and gives you a better perspective on the things that are bothering you. A helpful exercise is to divide a piece of paper or diary into two parts. On one side, write down things you might be able to change, like finding caregiving help from home care services to come in or respite stays at assisted living communities to give you a break. On the other, write down the things you can’t change, like being the primary caregiver. Focus on the things you can change or control because stressing over things you can’t change only makes it worse. 6. Try aromatherapy Using oil diffusers is a great way to feel more relaxed like lavender, peppermint, rose, and eucalyptus. These scents can be both soothing and relaxing for not only you as the caregiver but also for your loved one. If you don’t have time for a bath, still try to wash your face, hands, or arms with warm or hot water. At least while rubbing a warm washcloth over your face, you can feel the warmness wash over you. 9. Adult Coloring Books Coloring can actually help to take away the stress and provide calming emotions. If you don’t like to color, then of course this may not help but if you haven’t tried in a while, I highly suggest adult coloring books or anything you like. Painting, drawing, or something similar may be a great alternative. 10. Gardening You may already do this daily and take care of the indoor and outdoor plants but I suggest looking into other plants you do not have like growing real food in a garden. You can have ready-to-eat tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, and more right from your backyard if possible which will not only improve your diet but give you a sense of purpose. You can also have your loved one help you care for the plants and give them something to do as well.

Tree Branches should be trimmed up to prevent low hanging branches from hitting pedestrians and vehicles using the sidewalks/roads. There should be a Minimum of 6-10 ft clearance from both sides. The Pandemic, the Recession, and Hunger: What We’ve Learned
By Dave Krepcho “Just because I have a car doesn’t mean I have enough money to buy food.” This quote, featured in a 2020 New York Times headline, offers a glimpse at the true face of hunger in America – and it’s not what you might expect. For most adults, the touchstone for “economic disaster” in our country is the 2007-2009 “Great Recession” – a long, slow slog through high unemployment and financial insecurity. But lessons from that crisis don’t necessarily apply here. Back then, we saw a rise in hunger that was spread out over several years, concentrated mainly in low-income populations that had already been facing food insecurity. Not so during the pandemic. As millions of Americans lost their jobs to closures and layoffs, demand spiked overnight at emergency food providers across the nation. What’s more alarming, many of the families seeking help were facing hunger for the first time. They had never imagined going to a community pantry before.
story. Employers are hiring, but many available jobs are low wage. People have lost any savings they might have had before the pandemic. And as they try to recover, get out of debt, and find their way back to financial security, food is sometimes a negotiable expense. After all, you can’t forgo paying the rent. You can’t let the power get disconnected. But you can skip meals to cover the difference – and sometimes, your kids have to skip meals, too. Hunger relief programs can help soften the blow by providing fresh groceries, pantry staples, and nutritious meals to families in need. But it’s a challenge to keep up with the increased demand. At Second Harvest, we’re distributing enough food for 300,000 meals a day, double our average distribution before the pandemic. We’re on track to provide more than 100 million meals this year. What will it take to get us back to normal? It’s hard to say – but “normal” isn’t what we should strive for.
Even going into the pandemic, Florida never had 100 percent food security. Despite all our efforts, there was a gap in meals – in the multimillions – that left one in seven Floridians food insecure. COVID-19 only cast a harsher light Why? Florida’s low unemployment rate, which is on issues that have always existed in our commuaround 6%, is promising, but it doesn’t tell the whole nity: a lack of affordable While it appears we’re on the mend, lines of people at local nonprofit food providers aren’t getting any shorter than they were this time last year.
housing, a rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and a large proportion of our population living paycheck-to-paycheck. Recovering from those problems is going to be a marathon – not a sprint. And it will take more than just nonprofits, public officials, and activists: We’ll need the whole community to come together and work toward change. If you’re willing to step up and help, you can make an impact. Do you have some extra time on your hands? Sign up (it’s easy to do
online) and volunteer to pack lunches or sort supplies at Second Harvest’s warehouse. If time is tight, consider making a monthly donation pledge instead. One dollar donated allows us to provide nine dollars worth of food to families in need. Second Harvest is making a difference, but we can’t do it alone. To find out more and get involved, visit www.feedhopenow.org. Dave Krepcho is president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.
