COMMUNITY UPDATES
The theme for the 2021 May Mental Health Awareness Month outlined by NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is “You Are Not Alone.” That could not be truer for a community such as Avalon Park! After living over the past year in economic, political and health insecurity, we need to identify and take advantage of the ways that we can stay connected in our community. There is strength in community, and no one should feel like they are struggling alone or that they do not have access to the resources needed to live healthy and satisfying lives. In January of this year, the Live Well program was launched in culmination with AdventHealth and the YMCA. This program is designed to be an online resource center for holistic health options in our community, from physical fitness to educational material, medical resources, nutritional tips and more. The resources can be found

online at AvalonPark.com/LiveWell, as well as in the last section of each month of the Avalon Park Sun. One of the latest resources offered is through the non-profit organization, ProjecThinkForward. The mission of this organization is to provide sponsored therapy to those affected by mental health concerns. Each Monday of this month the ProjecThinkForward team will be interviewing local mental health professionals and will be providing discussions on topics such as trauma, depression, relationships, PTSD and holistic remedies. The podcasts will be available on their Facebook and Website pages. This month’s edition also outlines YMCA Summer Programs and a physical fitness challenge, which you can find starting on page 31. from you on what health resources are needed in our community. As part of a continued commitment to improve programs, amenities, and services in our community, we want to know what is important to you and your family. Please take a minute to complete the short community healthy survey. By doing so, you will be providing valuable information on what is important to you regarding health and wellness within your community. All answers are anonymous and will be used as a base to understand what the community as a whole views our overall health is and how we can begin to improve it through community action. Coffee Hour with BEAT holders. Building communities that are holistically strong includes a focus on establishing a place where the residents have a strong sense of belonging and safety. When you know your neighbors, they often become friends that you can relax with and check in on you in good and challenging times.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as I began writing this Coffee with Beat, I was reminded of the findings AdventHealth made several years ago through a community health survey. AdventHealth and Avalon Park Group were trying to determine what additional medical specialists Avalon Park needs in its goal to become the healthiest community in central Florida and the conclusion was that we need more psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors. The resounding cry was that above all other needs mental health was one of the most critical and where any community, including ours could improve. Not so long after that study, I had breakfast the Principal of Timber Creek Highschool, who echoed the same need for the students in her school. While we are not counselors at Avalon Park Group, although my wife Jill holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and is my closest advisor, we believe in MENS SANO IN CORPORE SANO, and understand the importance of mental health. We believe that the composition of a healthy community has a direct impact on the both the physical and mental health of its stake-

I also truly believe giving back through community service helps with positive mental health. There are countless opportunities to give back and help in the community. For the body there are activities like yoga in the park, YMCA youth sports. For the mind there are counselors, music and dance performances, art classes, and more. For the spirit there are several churches of all faith bases right in the community. In Avalon Park, everything for your daily life is at your fingertips, you do not have to leave the community, and that the sense of belonging and safety becomes real. We have committed to order and pay for the needed sewer system investments for Transformation Village. 2. We will continue to assist Pastor Dale provide quality nutrition opportunities in Bithlo through community dinners and any other means to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry. WE will pay for food and help with associated logistics, including new infrastructure.
3. We will help United Global Outreach “UGO” in the planning, design and building at our cost a minimum of 10 small homes to ensure that safe, quality affordable housing is available in Bithlo. A couple of weeks ago I attended the inaugural church service started by our long-time friend Pastor Dale Brooks in Bithlo. In his sermon, he reminded the congregation that first and foremost Bithlo needs God. And while there are many needs, such as clean water, enough food, and shelter, the foundation should remain routed in faith. Over the past month we continued correspondence with engineer on updated tank installation pricing and timing. The weekly meals still are continuing to feed local families. Additionally, talks continue with UGO and builders to begin construction on the next set of tiny homes. UGO has also implemented a mentorship program, where members of the community can volunteer as mentors to the youth. You may also support the community through their monthly Freedom Market where local vendors share their creations. The next market will be held Saturday, May 29th, 10 am to 2 pm and can find more information online here. Additionally, a weekly church service is also being held at Transformation Village on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm. Again, we encourage you to get involved and to reach out to Tim McKinney at 407-810-2214, Dale Brooks at 407-497-8545 or myself at 407-658-6565 for any additional ways to get involved.

OUC Named “Environmental Champion” for Fourth Consecutive Year Escalent’s list recognizes utilities in honor of Earth Day
OUC – The Reliable One has been named a 2021 Environmental Champion in Escalent’s Utility Trusted Brand and Customer Engagement study for the fourth year in a row. OUC is one of 31 utilities nationwide to receive the honor. Environmental Champions are selected based on survey results from utility customers who rate their energy providers on sustainability stewardship in their business operations, energy efficiency programs and service to their customers. “As we celebrate Earth Month, OUC is proud that our customers recognize our long-standing commitment to sustainability and energy innovation,” said Clint Bullock, OUC’s General Manager & CEO. “This honor is particularly notable this year as we made significant strides toward our goal of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. From announcing we would convert our coal plants to natural gas, adding more solar energy, and introducing
multiple electric vehicle initiatives, the past 12 months have been transformational, and it’s only the beginning as we work toward a more sustainable future.” OUC has undertaken several environmental initiatives including: • Announcing a goal to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, as well as interim targets of 50% carbon emissions reduction by 2030 and 75% by 2040. To meet this goal, in October 2020, OUC announced plans to convert its coal units to natural gas. • Increasing utility-scale solar capacity dramatically, adding 108.5 megawatts of solar energy at two new solar farms last summer, and recently announcing two additional solar farms that will provide another 149 megawatts when they come online in 2023. Combined, that’s more than 270 megawatts of solar through utility scale and OUCommunity
solar programs. Additionally, to encourage more customers to subscribe to solar, OUC’s board recently approved a reduced community solar farm rate from 6 cents to 4.5 cents, effective July 1, 2021. The lower rate would save about $180 per year for a community solar customer using 12,000 Kilowatt-hour (kWh) annually. • Expanding investment and infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) through a $45 million commitment to innovative electrification programs, including support for eBuses, dealership programs, charging hubs, and additional EV charging stations, bringing OUC’s total installed charging stations to 300 – maintaining Orlando’s position as one of the Top 10 most EV-ready cities in the nation. • Continuing the utility’s commitment to energy efficiency by meeting its goal to achieve 1% of savings of retail sales in 2020. That com-
mitment will only grow in 2021, as OUC has committed to a $30 million investment in efficiency and conservation efforts by 2030, including even more enhancements to low-income programs and technology solutions, as well as a conservation goal of 1% of retail sales for 2021. To determine Environmental Champions, Escalent conducted surveys among residential electric, natural gas and combination utility customers of the 140 largest U.S. utility companies over the last 12 months and scored the utilities on an Environmental Dedication index. Those scoring high enough on the index have been named Environmental Champions. The findings of the 2021 Utility Trusted Brand and Customer Engagement study can be viewed here.

by Raven Halle We all know why plants are important environmentally: they produce oxygen, filter pollution, offer homes for animals, and many more things. What we don’t all know, however, is how important and helpful it is to have and maintain indoor plants! Not only are they visually pleasing and can add flair and character to your space, but studies have proven that they can also increase productivity, reduce levels of stress, and elevate your mood. Here are the top 5 beginner friendly plants that can thrive indoors. If you have pets, ensure that your plant of choice is pet friendly! 1. Snake Plant The Snake Plant derives its name from its leaves, which are long and grow vertically (not reptilian at all!). Aside from its good looks, snake plants are known to be able to survive long periods without both water and sunlight, making them a good choice for a first time plant parent. They also are known to filter out potentially harmful chemicals from the air. 2. Dracaena This plant is perfect for those who are always busy and live on-the-go, as they are very low maintenance and are able to
adapt to different light environments. These are best for low-light spaces, as they are not recommended to be in direct sunlight. 3. ZZ Plant ZZ Plants are very drought tolerant and can also survive in low light areas! They have the ability to store water, making them low maintenance in terms of watering frequency, as they can be watered as little as once a month. ZZ Plants are also known to some to symbolize prosperity and friendship, so they make for great houseplants as well as gifts!
4. Rubber Tree If you tend to forget often about your plants, a Rubber Tree may be the way to go! It is said that they can tolerate a certain degree of forgetfulness, and handle being under-watered better than being over-watered. All it needs is bright light and a bit of room to grow. It is also great at removing excess carbon dioxide from your home. 5. Aloe Vera
manageable to care for, but they also have many healing benefits. Aloe from the leaf is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, so it can remedy many issues like sunburns and stomachaches. All it needs is a sunny spot to thrive—its soil likes to get extremely dry before watering is necessary. For more information on The Flats Apartment Living in Downtown Avalon Park, call 407-273-4337 or email Info@ TheFlatsAtAvalonPark.com.
This may be the only plant on the list that you recognize, and for good reason! Not only are Aloe Vera plants extremely
Orange County Launches Public Safety Campaign to Combat COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy, Build “Community Immunity” Orange County Government officials – along with representatives from the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, the City of Orlando, Orlando Economic Partnership, Visit Orlando, Walt Disney World, and Universal Orlando – recently revealed their “I Got My Shot” public safety campaign designed to debunk COVID-19 vaccine myths, highlight trusted voices in the community, and encourage residents to get vaccinated. The campaign was developed at the request of Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and has one overriding goal: reach the desired “community immunity” level of 79 percent sooner rather than later. “We want to make all residents aware of the safety, convenience and benefits of taking the vaccine as soon as possible,” said Mayor Demings. “And for those who have already received their vaccines, we’re asking for your help spreading the word to your family, friends and
In addition, Orange County staff conducted over 250 interviews through targeted focus groups to address our community’s concerns and apprehensions about the vaccine. These responses were then incorporated to help frame this public safety campaign.
neighbors.” There are those in the community who have taken a “wait and see” approach to the vaccine. Orange County hopes to provide guidance and increase trust levels by debunking vaccine myths and driving home the true benefits of getting a COVID-19 vaccine. “There’s always going to be a certain level of vaccine hesitancy, so we need to ensure everyone knows the COVID-19 vaccine is safe, available, convenient and doesn’t cost anything,” said Dr. Raul Pino, health officer
for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. “With the help of local health care providers, we can disseminate accurate information about the vaccine and further contain the virus and its mutations as we strive to reach herd immunity.” This campaign is the second phase of the Safer, Stronger, Together county initiative. With national research showing us that those most hesitant use social media as their primary information source, this campaign has been primarily targeted to live and breathe through social platforms.
Looking ahead, April 26, 2021, Orange County will partner with AdventHealth in a Town Hall setting to answer questions from community members and further combat vaccine hesitancy. More details to follow. To track vaccination progress, and for more information on the tools you can use to help protect our community against the COVID-19 virus and reach herd immunity as quickly as possible, visit, www.ocfl.net/ IGotMyShot.

5 Mood Boosters for Dealing With the Pandemic Blues
v With the pandemic keeping many at-risk seniors indoors, creating a space that helps them feel their best is key for keeping their spirits high. By incorporating some simple mood boosters into their everyday routine, your senior loved one can better navigate their time inside and overcome the pandemic blues. Ways To Boost the Mood of Seniors Stuck Inside
core at Avalon Park
The following small changes can make a big difference in positively boosting a senior’s day. 1. Brighten their space with fresh flowers and plants. Beautiful, bright, and blooming, fresh flowers are go-to pickme-ups. But if seniors are looking for something more long term, the act of taking care of plants and watching them grow can be uplifting in and of itself. Additionally, plants hung in open windows can welcome extra light and fresh air into a space, which can be a mood booster as well. However, if your senior has any existing plant or outdoor allergies, or if they simply lack a green thumb, artificial flowers and plants are great alternatives and can offer the same benefits. 2. Keep them calm with an oil diffuser or scented candle. Aromatherapy uses oils and scents to promote well-being. With just a few drops of essential oils in an oil diffuser or a scented candle, seniors can fill their space with their favorite scents to create a spa-like experience right at home. Some diffusers also have unique light settings, which make for an added mood booster. 3. Use a sound machine to create an escape to new and different locations. While sound machines vary, many offer
soothing sounds that can play in the background as seniors go about their day. For example, with sounds of waves crashing on the shore, seniors can envision visiting the beach. Or, with echoes of chirping birds and rustling trees, seniors can feel as if they’re out in nature. If paired with a diffuser or candle, the sounds and scents will certainly transport seniors to a new and exotic environment all from the comfort of home. 4. Fill the room with colors that will enhance their mood. While vibrant colors can brighten any room, surrounding your senior with their favorite colors can lift their spirits tremendously. Such colors can be added in furniture pieces, artwork, curtains and drapes, bed sheets, and more. 5. Display their favorite photos. Perhaps one of the best ways to put a smile on your senior’s face and make their living space feel more comforting is by showcasing their favorite photos and cherished memories of loved ones. Whether

There Is No Place Like the Office
For over a year now, the world has been bearing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve all been wearing masks, sanitizing, practicing social distancing and been separated or totally isolated from our friends and loved ones. We’ve also, in varying ways been separated from our colleagues, coworkers and workplaces. According to The Gensler Research Institute U. S. Workplace Survey in 2020, “Less than one-third of U.S. workers are currently working from the office”. However, with the widespread dissemination of vaccines, the world, and the workplace, is slated to open back up later this year.

What is a Chamber of Commerce & Why they are important? I have been told; a Chamber of Commerce is just a networking group. Others have said aren’t you part of the government? Some have described Chambers as a social club for business and others say isn’t it a leads group. To set the record straight, the Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(6) specifically defines Chambers of Commerce as exempt organizations, generally composed of the merchants and traders of a city. Chambers of Commerce usually promote the common economic interests of all the commercial enterprises in a given community. The term “Chamber of Commerce” was first used on August 5th,1599 in Marseilles, France when the town council found they could not continue to combine merchant and
municipal functions. The Chambers played a role in development of the “New World” and involved themselves with harbor maintenance, trade missions and even chasing down pirates. With the success, Louis XIV authorized the creation of more French Chamber’s, with Paris soon to follow. 200 years later, these Chambers assisted with the creation of the Suez Canal. Colonials wanted a sense of independence but had a responsibility to the local economy to improve it. In 1765 over 200 merchants organized in New York to rebel against the taxes and agreed not to trade with Britain. As precursor to the Revolutionary War these merchants united like a Chamber starting the rebellion against Britain. The New York Chamber of
Commerce was officially founded in 1768 providing a voice for the local merchants who wanted to distance themselves from British rule, but wanted reform, not a revolution. In the end many Chamber members sided with the mighty Great Britain due the fear of losing their livelihood and trade with the mother country rather than siding with the unknown future of the rebellious colonies. As the country grew, Chambers of Commerce became more important, assisting businesses with commerce and the growth of our country. Chamber’s worked to improve the trade and transportation of products along with job creation including the construction of the Pony Express, telegraph, Transcontinental Railroad, Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, and Panama Canal; all improved the way we conduct business and commerce. The East Orlando Chamber was founded in 1946, as the Union Park Chamber, then in 1968 renamed as the East Orange Chamber of Commerce. Today, we

OUC Celebrates Earth Day OUC recently celebrated Earth Day as part of the Central Florida Earth Day celebration at Lake Eola Park. Attendees toured OUC’s Tiny Green Home for a hands-on demonstration of sustainable practices they can incorporate into their own homes, received trees from OUC’s tree giveaway, and took OUC’s “Green Your Routine” pledge. To celebrate Earth Month, OUC encouraged its employees, customers and the Central Florida community to go green by adding simple conservation habits into their daily routines to help make the community and the world better for future generations by living more sustainably at work and at home. In addition to practicing some simple tips, OUC also invited its customers to take the “Green Your Routine” pledge. Almost 700 people took the pledge!

Entrepreneurship and Motherhood Being an Entrepreneur can be tough, but one of the toughest jobs out there is being a Mom! There is no instructional manual. There is no official training. And there is really no right way to be a Mom! Which sounds very familiar to being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is risky and so is being a Mom. You make a plan, but don’t ever know for sure if your plan will work out, until it does (or possibly doesn’t.) You try to find balance between family life and work. You have days you want to give up, but nevertheless, you keep moving forward every day just doing your best! And that is all we can do some times…our best! We asked one of our own Avalon Park Business Owners what it means to be an Entrepreneur and Mother and this is what she had to say: “Being a mother sets the foundation for the business I’m building up. As a Sustainability consultant, I feel responsible for showing my offsprings that my business contributes to making our world better and that every decision I take can have a positive effect to improve people’s wellbeing, the environment, and the community. I want my children to learn that entrepre-
neurship is a way to pursue your passion as long as that passion has a well-founded mission that benefits humankind. It is challenging to start a business with little kids, being a minority, and a woman but it is the best example to show we can do it all no matter the obstacles and motherhood struggles.” -Ana Leal www.amlysustainability.com Ultimately, as mothers and entrepreneurs if we continue to do our best, stay focused on making the world better through our businesses as well as our children, then some level of success is inevitable! Happy Mother’s Day WOMANtrepreneurs! If you are business owner, rising professional or just a woman who wants to take more ownership of her life and connect with other smart, like-minded women, join us for our next WOMANtrepreneur meeting at the 5th Floor in Avalon Park. What is a Geriatric Care Manager & Why Credentials Matter
A Geriatric Care Manager, also known as Elder Care or Aging Care Managers, represent a growing trend to help family caregivers provide care for loved ones living close by or living far away. Two organizations — the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and the National Academy of Certified Case Managers (NACCM) in Tucson — offer certification programs for geriatric care managers. Both organizations require specialized degrees, experience, and successful completion of an examination. At North Star Cares, we understand the importance of employing certified Care managers as our Care Managers are certified as a Care Manager (CMC) along with several years of experience under their belt. We even take it a step further and have Registered Nurses on Staff as well as certify all employees as Certified Dementia Practitioners (CDP). This has been truly beneficial for not only the families we help but also for our Care Managers to have a broader understanding when providing care. Wellness with Jen: Know Yourself, Know Your Limits I had a completely different article written for the month of May, the month of mental health awareness, and then this week happened... This week has been A WEEK! You know those weeks when you make it to the end of the week, and you look back thinking WOW, WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! Well, that is how this week has been. As I was sitting here, reflecting on the week and sipping some wine, I thought about how many other people have experienced weeks like this, especially over the past year. This week, a major change took place. I moved on from a company that I have been working with for close to 10 years. Yes, change is hard. Yes, I struggled with the decision to move on. Yes, I felt anxious about making the decision. Ultimately, however, I made the decision and felt confident in my reasons for deciding to move on. Next week was planned to be my final week. I work with children, and I form deep connections with these children, so leaving is not easy. I made it through telling all of “my kids” (yes, I call them “my kids” as if they are my own) that next week would be our final week together. Some of them were too young to understand, some just said ok, and some cried, but we knew that we had next week. Then the email arrived in my inbox. The email telling me that next week
was not my final week; the email telling me that this was actually my final week. That is when my anxiety went through the roof. My emotions ran high. I cycled through feelings of denial, anger, heartbreak, betrayal. All that I kept thinking was that I will be breaking a promise to so many kids next week when I don’t return to say our final goodbye, to give a final hug, to feel that final connection that runs so deep. What do you do when your emotions run high? What do you do to center yourself when you are feeling out of control of your emotions? If you have ever struggled with anxiety, you know that feeling of not being able to take a full breath; that feeling of shallow breathing despite trying to take a deep breath and ground yourself. I used to just continue to spiral out of control of my emotions. Now I know what I can reach for to help stop the spiral. What I have found to work for me might be an unpopular option in some people’s opinions, but hear me out... I reach for essential oils. I know, I know. You’re thinking “Oh goodness, she is one of those. She uses those snake oils. She mixes potions in her witch cauldron.” I have heard it all before, so don’t worry, you won’t hurt my feelings. Don’t knock it till you try it though! I wasn’t a believer. I had the same thoughts that you
are having right now. Once I did decide to give essential oils a try based on friend’s testimonies, I didn’t know the importance of using essential oils from a company that I can trust, and so the oils that I had tried from the store didn’t do anything for me. I finally decided to do my research, reach out to friends and ask what had worked for them, and then I did a little trial and errors. So, as I sit here reflecting on the week, I am breathing deeply without difficulty and I am accepting what has happened. I have grounded myself, found peace in the situation, and even managed to boost my mood with a little help of a roller and a diffuser. If you have found yourself feeling like you need some peace but don’t know how to achieve it, or maybe your have found yourself feeling overwhelmed with this craziness called life that just never slows down, you might benefit from some snake oils. Maybe you could use a little witch cauldron of your own from time to time. Keep in mind to know when you just need a little something natural to help ground you and help you take a deep breath, and know when you might need a little more. If you are experiencing feelings of anxiety that have reached a point that you might need to seek the attention of a medical professional, DO NOT ever hesitate to do so. Seeking out

I am only sharing my experiences and results of what I have found to be successful for myself and that of my family. Rotary Club of Avalon Park Announces Annual Scholarships and UCF Endowment The Rotary Club of Avalon Park scholarship committee gathered several weeks ago putting the finishing touches on a plan that has been years in the making. The Sacha Patin Memorial Scholarship Fund is named after the late Sacha Patin, fellow Rotarian and the founder of the Holiday Wine Walk. Since his passing, the Rotary Club has earmarked proceeds from the Wine Walk to be donated to his memorial scholarship fund. As the Holiday Wine Walk’s popularity grew, so too did the scholarship fund. Rotary has also added the Sip, Sample & Stroll (known as the Spring Wine Walk) so the club came up with a plan to allocate funds over the next few years that will help various groups of students. Here is a summary of the club’s three big initiatives: UCF - Timber Creek Scholarship.
An endowment will be established at UCF that will award an annual scholarship to UCF with a preference given to Timber Creek Students that are involved in community service. As the sponsor of the Interact Club at TCHS and co-sponsor of the Rotaract Club at UCF, this seemed to be a logical way for us to support our local students. Did you know there are more Timber Creek High School graduates that attend UCF than any other high school in the United States? While it will take us three years to fully fund the endowment, this scholarship will be awarded through the UCF Foundation starting this Fall. Valencia College Scholarship. A “first generation” scholarship to Valencia that qualifies for state matching funds is being established. This is like-
ly to be a needs-based scholarship and Rotary has started the process with Valencia to kick-off this award in the Fall of 2021. The club has previously awarded several scholarships at Valencia and will continue to make contributions to help students achieve their goal of starting post-secondary education.
2021.
University of Texas at Austin Scholarship. Sacha Patin moved to Orlando from Austin and was a die-hard UT Longhorn. Rotary has plans to award an annual scholarship to UT for an incoming freshman that is a graduate of a Florida High School. An additional “stretch goal” is to engage Sacha’s family and friends in Texas to see if the club can accumulate the funds required to name an endowed scholarship at UT. Rotary will begin awarding this scholarship in
Details are being finalized with all three institutions and will be shared through Timber Creek High School’s College & Career Center. For more information please email: avalonparkrotary@gmail.com.
Save the Date!
“It is an honor for our club to award scholarships to students each year,” stated Jim Foulks, Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee. DeDe Holloway, who is the other Co-Chair added: “It is exciting to see how Sacha’s legacy of service will live on through these deserving students.”
Rotary supports education! To learn more about Rotary please feel free to drop by our weekly meeting on Wednesdays at 7:30 AM at the Pavilion (Avalon Park POA building) - we look forward to meeting you!
